Last FNM of 2024
For the last FNM of the year, I brought Ruby Storm again—only to meet a spectacularly unfortunate finish. After a first-round bye, I didn’t manage to combo off in any of my games. I’m sure I’m making mistakes somewhere along the way, but for now, I can’t quite pinpoint what I’m doing wrong.
Since Faithless Looting was recently unbanned, I decided to give it a try but I wasn’t too impressed. The card disadvantage feels rough, so I’ll probably swap it out for Glimpse again next time.
On the bright side, I picked up Plhage, which sometimes sees play in the white-splash version. I’m excited to test it, though I’m still figuring out the best situations to bring it in.
I also brought a little Carth the Lion brew to experiment with now that Green Sun’s Zenith (GSZ) is unbanned in Modern.
Landing planeswalkers turn after turn is a blast and surprisingly tricky for many Modern decks to deal with. However, spending 4-5 mana on a creature that doesn’t do much on its own feels underwhelming. The planeswalker axis has potential, though, and I’ll keep tinkering with the list when I have the time.
Looking Back at 2024
As 2024 wraps up, I can see a mix of highs and lows in my Magic journey. One of my proudest moments was achieving my first-ever 4-0 finish with Kappa Cannoneer.
The matches were engaging, and I think Kappa is incredibly strong in Modern—both unblockable and tough to remove. I’d love to try Aspiring Spike’s list with Kappas, Trolls, and Phoenixes, but there’s so little time to test all these brews in paper!
As I decided to be more serious about modern magic, I invested in a real deck only for it to be banned!
But I sill get to play Nadu in legacy!
And most of my Modern FNMs ended on a negative record 🧙
On the Legacy side, I didn’t participate in as many tournaments this year. I made my debut at Bazaar of Boxes (BOB) in March with Breakfast 🐙, though my performance was underwhelming.
Later in November, I went to the Belgian Legacy Cup (BLC), again with Breakfast, finishing 2-3.
I know I punted several games, so there’s definitely room to improve. Breakfast remains my go-to Legacy deck, especially since Legacy events are rare, but I did enjoy a mid-year experiment with Miracles and Jeskai Control, even if my results weren’t great (for instance when I sleeved it for Sunday Legacy @VrolijkeViking and ended 0-4).
Plans for 2025
While I love Magic, it’s always a little bittersweet coming back from FNM with a losing record. I’m the kind of player who enjoys exploring new decks, so sticking to a single strategy can be difficult. That said, Ruby Storm is well-positioned in Modern right now, and it’s going to be my default deck moving forward. If I have the opportunity I would also like to play with the Broodscale combo although this one is on the downtick! On the fun side of things there is Arclight Phoenix waiting for me. Portent of Calamity Tron, Ponza and As Foretold are also card that are still on my bingo card!
My goal is to attend three competitions in 2025 (probably legacy) with the intent to play out all my games, learn as much as I can, and deepen my understanding of Breakfast and the legacy format.
For Legacy FNM, I’ll be switching between Breakfast and Dark Depths. I recently acquired the pieces for GW Depths, and I’m looking forward to having a little variation in what I bring to the table.
Finally, I notice that there is a big gap between my posts on this blog so I'll make it a little bit more consistent this year.
Here’s to another year of Magic—learning, improving, and most importantly, having fun!

Time warp eldrazi
I was looking for lists with Portent of Calamity and I stumbled upon this!
So it's actually possible to play Time Warp in an eldrazi deck! Very nice.

So I finally got thru most of my nearly 9,000 card collection organized by color. A Dakkon binder for the rares, the MTG one for the foils, and a tribal dragon cover portfolio on the way which my Dragons will be moved to. A Garruk box for my 5 color Dragon and Sliver decks. I got box full of repeat spam that I was refunded for, and a stack my favorite creature types that I expect to put in a binder ... Now what? I do have a couple things still coming ... 🏹 ⚔️ 🐲 🐉 🔥 ⚡ 🤠 ☠️ 🧛 🧝 🧚 🧙 🦄 D&D Guild Of Fantasy Art www.facebook.com/blackbladeofdragonhead Games, Guns& Dragons www.facebook.com/dragonsandtanks #mtg #magicthegathering #mtgproxy #mtglegacy #mtgcube #mtgmodern #oldschoolmtg #mtgvintage #mtgcommunity #mtgedh #mtgcommander #edh #mtgcustom #custommtg #mtgaddicts #mtgtokens #elderdragonhighlander #mtgoldschool #mtgart #mtgstandard #mtgdaily #mtgcard #mtgtrades #mtgcollection #mtglife #magicthegathering #magicthegatherincards #mtg #forgottenrealms https://www.instagram.com/p/CSdQN59s2jl/?utm_medium=tumblr

Decks I Loved from Prague
Before diving into my favorite decks from Eternal Weekend Prague, I want to address why I’m not sharing my own results. Simply put, it’s been rough lately. My Modern performances have been pretty dismal—I’m often finishing near the bottom—and my last Legacy competition, the Belgian Legacy Cup, didn’t go much better. It’s been frustrating, but that hasn’t stopped me from digging through decklists and finding inspiration. So, here’s a look at the decks that stood out to me this time around.
Modern
The deck diversity was kind of boring—mostly Boros, Dimir, or Scales Combo, with a few Eldrazi decks thrown in. Storm didn’t perform well at all. That said, one Jeskai Nulldrifter deck managed to snag #3, which caught my eye.
https://melee.gg/Decklist/View/460524
Of course, the list runs four copies of The One Ring (TOR), and I’m sure it’ll look very different in a week or two. Still, it gives me a good starting point for improving my mana base.
At #23, there was a Ruby Storm deck with a really clean list. It had a green splash for Veil of Summer and a white splash for Prismatic Ending.
https://melee.gg/Decklist/View/460741
I love how streamlined it is while still having those options.
Another thing that stood out was how Broodscale Combo dropped all the Eldrazi cards and instead focused on +1/+1 counter synergies. It runs playsets of Walking Ballista and all sorts of +1/+1-themed cards, often in small numbers.
https://melee.gg/Decklist/View/459548
No Halfling cards at all! The #4 list is super lean and worth taking a closer look at.
Legacy
I saw via twitter that someone brought BUG Chain of Smog combo and was very excited. Unfortunately, the deck didn’t do well overall, but I’ve kind of built a reputation as the Smog guy, so I have to mention it. 😊
https://melee.gg/Decklist/View/459682
On the brighter side, Breakfast won the whole thing, piloted by a really strong player.
https://melee.gg/Decklist/View/460449
That is awesome to see! It’s a solid reference for me, and now I’m on the hunt for footage of the deck in action so I can level up my own gameplay.
Another deck that grabbed my attention is Omnitell running Borne Upon a Wind. It’s a clever way to get Show and Tell into play, but I wonder how often you can hit five mana consistently?
https://melee.gg/Decklist/View/460426
It’s an idea I’d like to explore further.
Vintage
Of course, I couldn’t resist checking out the Vintage results, especially the unpowered decks (since they have their own prizing). The strongest option is probably Dredge, though you’ll need four Bazaar of Baghdad to build it*. Even though it’s not part of the Power Nine, it’s still a pricey card.
The next best thing is Stompy variants, and this time Mono-White Stompy did pretty well.
https://melee.gg/Decklist/View/459886
It uses three Elvish Spirit Guides and a playset of Null Rod. It’s less expensive than Dredge, but still not exactly cheap.
One deck I’d love to try is a Frog Midrange build in a Sultai shell.
https://melee.gg/Decklist/View/460827
It looks pretty solid, running the usual suspects like Collector Ouphe (x4) and Oko, Thief of Crowns (x3), but surprisingly no Deathrite Shaman. The Thinker target is effing Blighttseel Collossus! Unfortunately, I’m missing way too many cards to even think about building it.
For those lucky enough to have Power Nine cards, the first Oath deck on the standings was really fun to see. It’s running some old-school tech: 2x Spaghetti Monster, Dragon’s Breath, and Channel to hard-cast la nonna!
https://melee.gg/Decklist/View/460857
It’s a blast from the past, and now I’m tempted to rebuild that version of the deck. I would be pissed, ending #9 but that's life!
That's all this time around for me. Catch you at FNM!
*Apparently, Bazaar of Baghdad and Mishra's Workshop are considered power as well for this ranking

With modern horizon III - Washizu Toshiya piloted an 8-Cast Affinity deck to a 3-0 finish at a Modern tournament. The deck leverages the powerful synergy of artifact-based strategies and features Kappa Cannonneer.
It is a difficult threat to answer that also has evasion built in. On top of that, the deck draws cards like crazy.

Earlier today I saw some quote goals they had set last year and how 2020 mucked them up. 2020 has been far from perfect but I have surprisingly exceeded my goals. • Last year, my New Year's resolutions focused on creating video content at least once per week (thinking of YouTube/Twitch at the time) to progress my content positively. "Expect more YouTube videos, streaming, creating and more from me! (1/2/20)". • I've networked with MANY creators from TikTok videos to charity EDH games. I've established a working relationship writing @HipstersMTG, sponsored by @ultraprointl & affiliated with @channelfireball. I stuck to my goal producing video content once/week. • Not how I imagined. I still have footage from GP Phoenix to make into a YT video, now w/diff undertone as last event attended in 2020. I got on TikTok in January before the pandemic, little did I know I would experience a whole new world of connectivity, creativity & compassion. • OH!!! And how could I almost forgot the biggest one of all~something that was on my 2018 goals way back~getting to preview my own MTG card provided by #wizardsofthecoast for Zendikar Rising, & getting another free preview card for #mtgkaldheim for 1/15/21. It's good to reflect on goals set/reached even with all the sh*t 2020 has given. I hope you accomplished things too even if a completely different path than planned. What goals did you accomplish/have yet to fulfill? • Remember goals are not always met immediately, so hearing your progress is FAB too. 💖-Z • • • #selfreflectionsunday #serumvisions #mtgblue #mtgcosplay #magicthegatheringcosplay #uncommon #magicthegatheringcard #cosplaygoals #mtg #wotc #mtgalters #mtgmodern #mtgbabe #mtgclassic #cosplayedits (at Eugene, Oregon) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJVJjXlnbdS/?igshid=1t9a965xny6co
