Please tell us about your favourite fanfiction tropes!

Sorry this took me so long, I was battling with the monster called responsibilities T^T

Honestly speaking, I'm so basic when it comes to tropes it's almost laughable but let's do this!! It's been a long day and I'm in no mood to get jumped so yeah none of my fave 'cest's will be here lol (maybe I'll do a separate post for those hmmmm).

Doing a top 10 cuz any more will require mental strength I definitely don't have. Love all my tropes interchangeably so the order they're in doesn't really mean much, don't take it seriously.

(Except for No.1, it's that high for a reason)

10) Omegaverse: I hated this one SO much when I was in my woke 17 year old fake fujo phase but now I'm literally looking for any reason to read or write it into my fave ships. It doesn't do it for a lot of readers, understandably so bc it's super easy to make cringe or write it poorly but "don't like don't read" It's not that hard.

One of my favorite aspects of omegaverse (or ab//o in general) is the aspect of scents. So much care and symbolism can be put into choosing what one particular character smells like, and it gives a different kind of feeling when done right. I've been getting in gardening lately and boy do plant scents hit different when you're growing them yourself.

Then there's knotting and that should be self explanatory 🤤

9) Cloning/Time travel: This is a particular guilty pleasure that I never see enough of except its a rare doujin or lone fanarts 😭. Like two or three of the same bottoms to one top?! Why does no one see the vision?! Or one of their future or past selves stopping by just because?! Idrc as long as someone is getting tag teamed lol.

8) Fuck or Die/Sex Pollen: these open up a lot of room for dubcon or mindbreak scenarios so I'm definitely down if the chemistry and lead up are just right.

7) Mpreg: Bet y'all expected me to mention this in omegaverse but as I've come to realize there are a lot of ways for mpreg to happen even outside of that. Once you tune out the "yuckie mpreg and watersports" tiktok babies you will be living your best life, trust me.

6) Crossdressing: Putting a male character in a dress is the quickest way to my heart actually. As much as I love maid dresses though, I'm more of a school uniform (not the sailor type) or office wear with short, tight skirts kinda guy.

5) Alternate Universes: Doesn't matter which just give it to me I don't care! It's hard thinking of any AU setting I wouldn't like because taking characters, putting them in a different setting and working out how they'll act in that setting while retaining the essence of their personalities and chemistry is truly an art form I can never get tired exploring.

Royalty/Fantasy aus have been done to death but I'll eat them up regardless. Sci-fi aus, not so much, I'd love to see more. And AUs based on a different show or media to the canon are like up in my top five aus probably right below mafia.

4) Mutual Pining: I fell like there's literally nothing to explain with this one. If they both aren't simping for each other in some way as I'm reading I'm hitting the close tab button, in this house we everyone must be chronically obsessed.

3) Forced Proximity: this goes hand in hand with the mutual pining trope; like sure they don't want to be around each other but that's because the longer they are the deeper they fall.

There's also the bonus of just arguing/banter, I love reading those so much, almost as much as the smut!

2) Getting together: Pre-relationship stuff leading up to the start of intimacy is like the best thing ever, it just adds that extra something that feel like 'yeah, maybe they would start dating like this' or 'yeah, they would have their first time together like that.'

Can't really explain properly but it really does feel like being there for the part most ships might never get in Canon.

1) Enemies/Rivals to Lovers: As much as I enjoy some fluffy-obsessive codependency now and again, what I prefer more is a tension that often comes with one character trying to ruin the other's life or (in the case of rivals) trying to one up each other. There's of course got to be the added bonus of being stupidly attracted to each other and fighting the urges tooth and nail only to succumb.

A lot of my top ships have this special something to them and sometimes when I'm writing aus I can't help cooking up one where they start of as enemies (the destroy your future boywife's kingdom and slaughter his family before taking him as a prisoner type of enemies but don't worry, he never liked that place anyway😋). Sex so good, the fuck did they hate each other for in first place???

Some of those are left either unfinished on ao3 or never see the light over day so question my dedication to the bit all you want but it's my undeniable number one lol.

Top 5's always feel so criminal because 5 places is never enough 😭 I read and watched a lot of good stuff last year but since most of my bookmarks are Goyuu and NagiReo I'm gonna do a top five with one fic for each ship I enjoyed most in 2024 and like honorable mentions that are maybe other fics from ships mentioned previously or other ships entirey.

With that out of the way…

5) Finn and Chris Get Married by SkullSummonerMina Media: High Card (Anime) Ship: Finn Oldman/Chris Redgrave

It's been a while since I've talked about High Card and I'm not all too proud of the recent movie BUT I read the spin off manga High Card 9 No Mercy and that made me crave more Finn and Chris shenanigans. This fic delivered on everything and more. I was almost sobbing as I finished it. Finn and Chris get fake married for company benefits but suddenly they're being targeted by another Card user so it's chaos and they have to solve a mystery. Just High Card things I guess.

4) No Apologies by Miko Media: Tokyo Debunker (Video Game) Ship: Haizono Shohei/Kagami Subaru

I became obsessed with this game towards the ending of last year when Nu Carnival became way too irritating to handle and I've regretted it since. Someone please save my mental health. Sho and Subaru are arguably the most annoying pairing I have for this game because they're Nagireo levels of disgustingly in love with each other. But since with these type things the target audience is either dudebros or women into m/f, players like me will have to do with crumbs and subtext. I enjoyed no Apologies a lot because unlike most fics I read there was a definite plot and the drama was juicy.

3) Tohma's Game by missthesnow Media: Tokyo Debunker (Video Game) Ships: Ishibashi Tohma/Mido Alan & Ishibashi Tohma/Kamurai Jin

Jin/Tohma is my ride or die for this game just because of one scene and the fact they remind me of SebaCiel so I take any hate on them as a personal attack, new year same Ren shit. This fic didn't end with them getting together but it was a fun ride and I happen to be an AlanToh fan too so its going here cause I'm obsessed with it blond man collecting stoic tops left and right, sue me.

Fyi once your ship pulls something like the first pic it loses all platonic interpretation privileges, they're either gay, extra gay or doomed gay

2) ANATOMY OF A FIRST MEETING by Seabirdie Media: Blue Lock (Anime) Ship: Mirage Reo/Nagi Seishiro

Admittedly I didn't enjoy any bllk ships/fics this year as much as I did last year so I think I'm burning our from my obsession. Ngro fics and doujins are the exception bc they hold a special place in my heart and this fic absolutely destroyed me. I love reincarnation plotlines soooo much especially when they are doomed (I am never reading the happyclover fic tho, it has my notp and that's enough to turn me off. Period 😭)

1) Love, or something Ignites by lainebee Media: Jujutsu Kaisen (Anime) Ship: Gojo Satoru/Itadori Yuuji

Goyuu started off strong for me this year and though I breezed through all of my fave rating I'm the Ship tag in like 2 months and gradually burned out, thinking back on this fic and its part 2 make me so emotional and sad bc I still love them so much and it makes being a goyuu stan with all its death threats and pedo accusations worth it lmaooo. It's not easy having great taste 💅

I have a toxic relationship with ngro's miscommunication trope, I'm doing my best but oh my god I love them so much! I've read too many fics about their breakup arc and I while never get tired if it's done to my tastes so yeah I will be here, on this hill, just dying.

Media: Ron Kamonohashi's Forbidden Deductions (Anime) (or if you're a manga peasant like me Deranged Detective)

Ship: Isshiki "Toto" Totomaru/Kamonohashi Ron.

Never in any Sherlock reiteration have I shipped the Sherlock/Watson dynamic until these two came along. It's always felt so bland compared to Sherlock/ Moriarty but rontoto make it work with the way their personalities bounce off each other so well. This fic is just an alternate Canon where Toto meets Ron before he (Ron) graduates from blue and there's this whole soul mates psycho connection going on, its cute and fluff and they stop the bloody field trip together <333

Every six months or so I just have to check up on the dgm community, see if they're still kicking and all that. Yullen in like vash the stampede is like the best of both worlds!

I like dgm Hallow a bit but maybe that's bc unlike most of the Fandom I watched it like three years after I finished the main show and remembered nothing...

Oh damn, Canon ngro moments...haven't picked up bllk or epinagi in months lmao but I can pick my two favorite clear as day!

Number 1 will forever be the scene where Reo grabs Nagi by the collar and proclaims he'll show Nagi a live more enthralling than any nap or video game. Both the manga panels and frames in the epinagi movie captured the intensity of Reo's resolve so well I got goosebumps twice and, I won't lie, I got so excited too.

Number two is the piggyback scene where Nagi tells Reo it isn't a hassle being with him. As a romantic at heart who's in love with subtext that little hint of his walls breaking to let Reo's influence in had me rolling on the floor and kicking my feet.

There's so much to them platonically but in another world they'd be the most amazing unlikely partners to lovers story 😍

I have so many ships they remind me off due to just the sheer intensity of their connection to each other and most of my otps tend to have elements of their dynamic but the top 2 namely are JinTohma (tokyo debunker) and SebaCiel (black butlter). The Servant x King/Boss dynamic will never get old to me, I don't know why but there's this beauty to the underlying devotion from the end of those those serving and how they will do anything or stand against anyone to who wants to bring harm to their masters even though their own actions and intentions may differ from the start.

Songs are a tricky thing since I rarely listen music while writing fics or deal with ship stuff but for them I think I'd pick their Epinagi movie ending Theme (Stormy by Nissy and Sky-Hi) but like if that answer isn't satisfactory for everyone I did have an unhealthy attachment to Our Song by Anne Marie and Niall Horan during their break up arc 😋

It's the most precious thing ever omg! The animation is new though, pretty sure the exhibition lines have been around for a while, either that or Nagi's run out of ways to say how obsessed he is about Reo and how much he wants to be spoiled by him so now he's repeating himself.
