Here are details on some of the scientific investigations taking place on the orbiting lab: Higher quality protein crystals The crew initiated protein crystallization growth inside the FROST2 facility for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency Protein Crystallization Growth (JAXA-PCG). This investigation grows high quality protein crystals in microgravity and returns them to Earth for detailed structural analysis. This analysis contributes to design of new pharmaceuticals and catalysts for a wide range of industries. Scientists have performed protein crystallization experiments in space for more than 20 years, as the absence of gravity produces better quality crystals.

Mighty mice in space Crew members prepared and filled habitats for the Rodent Research -19 (RR-19) investigation, which evaluates using a myostatin inhibitor to prevent the muscle and bone loss experienced in microgravity. Myostatin (MSTN) and activin are molecular signaling pathways that influence muscle degradation. RR-19 uses the Bone Densitometer (BD), which measures the mass per unit volume (density) of minerals in bone. This research could provide valuable data to support clinical trials of therapies for a wide range of conditions that affect muscle and bone health. Such research is particularly important for conditions that involve disuse muscle atrophy, or muscle wasting due to immobility or lessened activity seen in patients experiencing extended bed rest and the elderly.

Bio-printing on demand The BioFabrication Facility (BFF) tests a technology to print organ-like tissues in microgravity as a step toward manufacturing human organs in space using refined biological 3D printing techniques. In test runs during the week, the crew successfully printed three “bio-inks” and achieved a thickness double that accomplished on the ground. All printed samples later return to ground for analysis. The BFF is a step toward manufacturing human organs and tissues in space, primarily for use by patients on Earth. This capability also could help maintain the health of crews on future exploration missions by, for example, producing personalized pharmaceuticals on demand.

Getting a grip in space The crew performed several sessions for the GRIP investigation. Developed by the ESA (European Space Agency), it tests how the human nervous system takes into account forces due to gravity and inertia when manipulating objects. Results may provide insight into potential hazards astronauts could face as they manipulate objects in different gravitational environments. In addition, the investigation could provide information useful for the evaluation and rehabilitation of impaired upper limb control in patients with neurological diseases. It also could support design and control of haptic interfaces, systems that allow humans to interact with a computer through bodily sensations and movements, for use in challenging environments.

Other investigations on which the crew performed work: - Inertial Spreading slows down and magnifies a drop of water spreading over and through a metal object designed to resemble properties of a sponge. Scientists denounced the (as yet unconfirmed) experiment as irresponsible, and the development reinforced fears that the redesigning of DNA is moving ahead too fast and without necessary oversight.

The proliferation of similar experiments on farm animals in recent years supports those concerns. Though rapid strides have been made to map genomes—the full set of genes for humans, animals, insects and plants—scientists have only begun to understand what the tens of thousands of individual genes do. Moreover, they are far from unraveling how those genes interact with each other…

…Crispr-Cas9, the tool introduced in 2012 that was used to engineer the human babies, is cheaper than older techniques and enables scientists to add, delete and rearrange DNA with greater precision. But an article published in the journal Nature Biotechnology in July suggests that Crispr might cause greater damage than previously understood—including changes in genes other than those intended. When DNA is cut, “a lot of odd things can happen,” study leader Allan Bradleysaid in July.

Take the gene called MSTN. Since 2012, Kui Li, a scientist with the state-run Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, has reverse-engineered cells from adult Chinese pigs to their embryonic stage, which is a common process when cloning animals. Then, using an older editing tool, he deleted MSTN, which limits how large muscles grow in mammals, including in humans. The edited cells are infused into eggs, chemically fertilized in a lab and implanted into the womb of a surrogate. At a farm 70 miles southeast of Beijing, dozens of pigs rest in metallic cages and glass enclosures; their meat is up to 12% leaner if both copies of their MSTN gene are deleted.

But there was another effect on the pigs: One in five offspring who inherited the edited genes had an extra spinal bone known as thoracic vertebrae, Dr. Li found. He doesn’t know why, though he postulates that the MSTN gene somehow contributes to skeletal formation. Lab tests show that his pigs are safe to eat, said Dr. Li: Despite a slight fading in color after cooking, he recorded no nutritional differences. He’s begun using Crispr to make more commercial breeds like the U.K.’s Large White leaner or resistant to PRRS, a deadly viral infection.

When state-sponsored scientists at Nanjing Agricultural University used Crispr to edit MSTN out of rabbits to make them meatier, 14 of the 34 engineered offspring were inexplicably born with enlarged tongues, leading the scientists to warn of abnormalities from gene editing in a 2016 research paper on their project. “Safety issues need to be addressed in future studies before the technology can be utilized” in agriculture, the authors wrote.

“Even the genes that we think we know very well, there’s a lot to learn,” said Se-Jin Lee, one of the scientists who discovered MSTN at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1997.

Chinese scientists at a different research facility have had to use caesarean sections to birth lambs whose MSTN genes were deleted with Crispr, because some grew too large to be birthed naturally. They have had success modifying goats’ cashmere to grow about 20% longer by preventing the gene FGF5 from regulating the growth.

Generally, the larger the animals, the greater the complications. New Zealand’s AgResearch Ltd. applied Crispr on cattle to reduce their heat stress, deleting a single amino acid on a gene that contributes to coat color (including hair and skin color in humans), in an effort to lighten the cows’ black-and-white coats to better reflect sunlight. Both calves died (one was sick and was euthanized)…

…The outcome also underlined how far there is to go in understanding the forces at work among the genes of humans and animals. “I think it would be an understatement to say we should be more cautious,” said Lori Marino, a neuroscientist and the founder of Utah-based Kimmela Center for Animal Advocacy. “I think we’ve already gone over the line with animals, and now humans.”

Something I’ve been researching and looking into myself is bodybuilding and the fitness community. I myself am an average gym go-er and have been looking into building more muscle. One thing that I’ve noticed in the fitness industry in particular is how people throw around the word ' Genetics '. I believe personally that you can achieve whatever you want in terms of physique if you train hard enough, are well disciplined and stick to your nutritional goals such as Protein, Fats and Carbohydrates. In terms of my project mutation/mutate I feel like the fitness industry as a whole fits in well with my concept. Although genetics in terms of bodybuilding is important our genetic makeup is something we can’t change. Therefore women and men take steroids. Women can mutate their bodies by taking testosterone to build more muscle as can men. A recent study that I found that I think is super interesting is a research into Bodybuilding and Myostatin. I’ll include some information on what they concluded along with a source. I also have some heavily edited in terms of hue saturation etc and embarrassing images of myself after being done in the gym to show my muscle growth and progression in terms of mutation.

MSTN is a gene that makes instructions for producing the protein myostatin, a protein that is part of the transforming growth factor beta family (TGFβ). The TGFβ family of proteins control the growth of tissues in the body, myostatin is found nearly exclusively in the skeletal muscles where it is active before and after birth. The protein actually controls skeletal growth by restraining it, preventing muscles becoming excessively large. This study aimed to see the prevalence of mutations in the male bodybuilder population (n = 92) and if having a mutation had any affect on their muscle size and/or muscle performance. The study clearly shows that those with a mutation are rare, however the mutation does appear to give the subject a performance and size advantage over those with the common outcome.

Exercise Physiology : Can Women Build Muscle Mass ?

There is a common misconception that women cannot build muscles. Normally, the common phrase is that “women do not bulk up like men.” Building muscle is not exactly building bulk. This is the process of muscular hypertrophy in which muscle fibers increase in size. Somatotype, age, genetics, and sex play a role in how much muscle mass a person can acquire. A woman with a mesomorphic body type will have more potential at muscle mass gains than an ectomorphic woman. As people age they lose muscle mass gradually, if they do not exercise. A younger person would have an easier time building muscle, because they are at a stage of physical peak. 

Sex also effects total muscular gains relative to endocrinology. Men’s  higher levels of androgens allows for greater protein synthesis.However, growth  hormone and insulin like growth factor one is produced in both men and women.  GH and IGF-1 contribute to bone and muscle growth. The amount of free testosterone in the body that is unbounded that aids in strength. This explains why a woman can be stronger than a man even though a weaker man is producing higher testosterone levels. This also explains why anabolic steroids have a dramatic effect on women’s gains if they decide to use them. They expand endocrine function beyond what would be biologically and physiologically possible. Puberty increases male physical fitness capacity, while females do not see a gain in physical optimum. This can be reversed through training and diet. There is an advantage to estrogen relative to the muscular system. It can aid in muscle repair  and protect bones and joints from harm. The MSTN gene plays a role in muscular growth. It directs myostatin a protein which regulates muscle growth. This explains why muscles do not grow to the extent of the Incredible Hulk. Th body places a limit to suit the size of the skeletal frame.Besides training nutrition and metabolism are also critical.  Women have a tougher time, because a majority of food consumed can be metabolized into fat stores. This means activity level and calorie consumption would have to be balanced to meet the requirements of muscle gains.  

There is no such thing as “men’s muscles” or “women’s muscles.” Both male and female muscle fiber are the same on the cellular level. Men have higher fast twitch muscle fiber better suited to explosive power. Women’s type I muscle fiber is more endurance based. Anatomy and biology show that women can be capable of building strength and muscle, yet there is a bias that could be stopping women’s full sports performance potential. Their remains a fear of getting “too muscular.”  The fitness community does feed into such sexism and body image conformity by constantly assuring women getting involved in strength sports “they won’t get too bulky.” Instead another term is used called toning, which really is the close to being the same as building muscle. 

Women have the same muscles as men. The difference has to due with amount and size. If on average women are smaller then men this means a more diminutive skeleton. That means less muscle would be housed on the female body. Ligaments and tendons also aid in strength.  Tendons attach bones to muscles, while ligaments connects bones to bones through cartilage. If women cut their body fat levels and build muscle they can present strong looking physiques.   

What is wrong with having a different type of body ? These are serious athletes and they are not doing this for the sole benefit of attracting men. 

There is no reason for women to be condemned for looking and being different. Women may also be underestimating their own potential and capability. For so long they have been cast as the weaker sex, they may not attempt to do anything physical or sports related.  Thankfully, this has been challenged with science related to exercise and sports performance. Women can build muscle, bu the amount depends on various factors related to biology, physiology, and endocrinology.
