you stitched something together inside of yourself and gave it life with light from the sky and now it won't die. and you can't kill it because part of you loves it and you're not quite right in the head or the person you used to be but at the end of the day it's simply a beast of sadness. you crave the mercy you didn't get from your creators and so i'm telling you please forgive yourself. please hold the monster by the hand.

The best quippy movies are quippy throughout. Princess Bride, Pirates of the Caribbean, Airplane!, Clue--they all set their tone and pace straightaway and then never deviate from it.

The other thing that makes them work: with few exceptions, none of these characters are joking. In-universe, they are not attempting to banter or lighten the mood. No one reacts as though they have said anything particularly clever or out of the ordinary. These are stressed-out people in life-or-death situations and they are not having fun.

But the audience, we know that the characters we like aren't in any real danger. Because it set the tone from the beginning that this is a swashbuckling adventure where the heroes always win, or that it's the kind of rapid-fire absurdity where we're expected to see death as a punchline.

So the disconnect comes when you want to have grand, gripping stakes that depend on the audience having a genuine fear for the safety of the characters, while engaging in a mode of humor that depends upon the audience absolutely not having that fear. In those cases, you usually end up with the jokes delivered in-universe and getting reactions to the joke from other characters. Making that feel genuine and character-derived is a fine line to walk.

I need people to stop blaming the death of movies on “quips”. A quip is just a funny line of dialogue. That’s all. Like I just saw a post talking about quips and the death of movies and brought up Pirates of the Caribbean as an example of a better movie and yes it is but also that movie is FULL OF QUIPS. I just rewatched The Princess Bride. It’s all quips. Every single line. And it’s a masterpiece.

Movies suck when people don’t care about the art they’re making. That includes them not caring about their quips. Which is why a lot of comic relief dialogue ALSO sucks now. But the problem isn’t that funny dialogue exists.

what does love mean to you ?

something you hold onto

you hold onto love like it's anchoring you to earth, and maybe it is. but why is that? do you fear that one day all this love you've found will somehow disappear, or that one day someone will just decide you don't deserve it? what if i told you that all this love isn't finite, that no matter who you are and who you become, love will always exist for you in so many forms. it will find you regardless of how worthy you think you are of it, you don't need to hold onto it so tightly out of fear of it leaving. you don't deserve to be abandoned, i'm sorry if love ever taught you that you're deserving of that. but real, sincere love won't abandon you. the people who love you? they really do really love you, they aren't lying. and you can continue to hold onto this love, just trust that you don't have to grip it so tightly.
