On April 10th 1981, BBC news reported that ‘imprisoned IRA hunger striker’ Bobby Sands had been elected to the House of Commons as MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone, defeating the Ulster Unionist candidate by a margin of 1446 votes. The path to victory was cleared by the withdrawal of the moderate Catholic Social Democratic and Labour Party, so as not to split the nationalist vote.
Bobby Sands, who was four years into a 14 year sentence on firearms offences, stood for parliament on an Anti H-Block platform, referring to the division of Maze Prison holding those convicted of sectarian terrorism offences. He was also already 41 days into a hunger strike, initiated in the cause of improving brutally harsh conditions, and for a reclassification of their status to that of political prisoners. (The 'special category' status had been revoked in 1976 by Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson). According to the BBC, he was already too weak at this point to leave his bed in the prison infirmary.
His election agent, (and subsequent MP for the same constituency) Owen Carron, stated:
“…The Nationalist people have voted against Unionism and against the H Blocks. It is time Britain got out of Ireland and put an end to the torture of this country…”
Bobby Sands died on May 5th, 1981.
The Thatcher Government’s public position was that they might be receptive to some reform of prison conditions, but refused to enter negotiations or grant any concessions while the hunger strike continued. Attempts at mediation were made by Pope John Paul II, the European Human Rights Commission, the Irish Commission for Justice and Peace, and the International Red Cross. By October, 10 of the hunger strikers had died, while five prisoners were saved after their families, supported by the Catholic Church, granted permission for medical authorities to intravenously feed those who had lost consciousness.
After the strike ended, the Government announced some measures toward regime improvements. Despite the public hard-line position, some secret negotiations had been occurring through an MI6 agent, while Jim Prior, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, drove a more conciliatory approach.
The classification to political prisoner status was one compromise not considered, with Margaret Thatcher famously stating, "Crime is crime is crime. It is not political. It is crime. There can be no question of political status." She also said, "Mr Sands was a convicted criminal. He chose to take his own life. It was a choice that his organisation did not allow to many of their victims."
The Representation of the People Act was also amended, preventing other H-Block prisoners, or any prisoner sentenced to more than one year, standing for parliament.
One hundred thousand mourners attended Bobby Sands' funeral.

The heartbroken grandfather of a two-year-old girl who died of a head injury has described it as his "pride and joy." Locally named Little Ali Jayden Maguire, known as AJ, was injured at an address on Park Avenue in Dungannon, County Tyrone on Friday night, Belfast Live reports. The tragic baby was rushed to the hospital where she later died. It is understood that PSNI officers and paramedics who arrived at the scene were told that the boy had been injured after falling into a chimney. A source said: “Initially it was claimed that the girl had fallen against a fireplace, she hit her head and then stopped breathing. “The police have confirmed that the first report was of a serious head injury to her. The mother was said to have just walked away after leaving the girl and baby behind when she called for her and found her daughter seriously injured. An ambulance was called and paramedics were inside the house for some time. The investigation is ongoing ". The tributes to the girl last night flooded social networks. A friend said: "You were too precious for this world, rest girl." Another said, “My heart is broken in two for all of you. You were too good for this land. Rest in peace, precious little angel. Steffan Rhodri and Nathaniel Parker in THIS HOUSE at Chichester Festival Theatre. Photo by Johan Persson
Rehearsals began today (Monday 22nd January 2018) for the first UK tour of This House, which opens at West Yorkshire Playhouse on 23 February (national press night 28 February). The cast – who play a colourful host of MPs and Whips – is Ian Barritt (Batley & Morley/Woolwich West/Belfast North/Western Isles & Ensemble), William Chubb (Humphrey Atkins), Giles Cooper (Fred Silvester), Stephen Critchlow (Bromsgrove/Abingdon/Liverpool Edge Hill/Paisley/Fermanagh & Ensemble), James Gaddas (Walter Harrison), Natalie Grady (Ann Taylor), Ian Houghton (Armagh, Ambulance Man, Ensemble), David Hounslow (Joe Harper), Marcus Hutton (Ensemble), Harry Kershaw (Paddington South/Chelmsford/South Ayrshire/Henley/Marioneth /Coventry North West/Rushcliffe/Perry Barr & Ensemble), Louise Ludgate (Rochester & Chatham/Welwyn & Hatfield/Coventry South West/Ilford North/Lady Batley & Ensemble), Geoffrey Lumb (Clockmaker/Peebles/Redditch/Stirlingshire West/Clerk & Ensemble), Nicholas Lumley (Oxshott/Belfast West/St Helens & Ensemble), Martin Marquez (Bob Mellish), Matthew Pidgeon (Jack Weatherill), Miles Richardson (Speaker Act I/Mansfield/Sergeant at Arms Act II/West Lothian & Ensemble), Tony Turner (Michael Cocks), Orlando Wells (Walsall North/Plymouth Sutton/Serjeant at Arms Act I/Speaker Act II/Caernarfon/Clerk & Ensemble) and Charlotte Worthing (Ensemble). Ian Houghton, David Hounslow, Matthew Pidgeon, Tony Turner and Orlando Wells return to This House having previously appeared in the West End production.
James Graham’s critically acclaimed and prescient political drama takes on a new importance in the current political climate. Are we in the midst of a political revolution? Can the country stay united? Roll back to 1974… The corridors of Westminster ring with the sound of infighting and back biting as Britain’s political parties’ battle to change the future of the nation, whatever it takes.
In an era of chaos, both hilarious and shocking, when votes are won or lost by one, there are fist fights in the parliamentary bars, high-stakes tricks and games are played, and sick MPs are carried through the lobby to register their crucial votes as the government hangs by a thread. This House strips politics down to the practical realities of those behind the scenes; the whips who roll up their sleeves and on occasion bend the rules to shepherd and coerce a diverse chorus of MPs within the Mother of all Parliaments.
Directed by Jeremy Herrin with Jonathan O’Boyle, the production is designed by Rae Smith with lighting design by Paule Constable and Ben Pickersgill on tour, music by Stephen Warbeck, choreography by Scott Ambler and sound by Ian Dickinson.
This House is produced on tour by Jonathan Church Productions and Headlong.

Constituency Preview: Fermanagh & South Tyrone
The last time the United Kingdom held a general election so close to Christmas was on December 14th 1918. At that time the territory which roughly composes the modern constituency of Fermanagh & South Tyrone was represented by 3 Members of Parliament. North Fermanagh & South Tyrone both returned Irish Unionst MPs to Westminster, while South Fermanagh elected Seán O'Mahony of Sinn Féin who abstained from Westminster and sat in the first Dáil.
Taking totals of the number of votes cast for nationalists and unionists across those 3 constituencies reveals 21908 votes for unionist candidates, and 21,080 for nationalist candidates. 101 years later so little has changed that a margin of 828 votes would be considered a comfortable victory when compared to some recent contests here.
It was to the parliament elected in 1918 that Winston Churchill, while moving the Irish Free State (Agreement) Bill for its second reading, made his now famous remark that…
“as the deluge subsides and the waters fall short we see the dreary steeples of Fermanagh and Tyrone emerging once again. The integrity of their quarrel is one of the few institutions that has been unaltered in the cataclysm which has swept the world.”
The less well known remainder of the paragraph that the then Secretary of State for the Colonies was working his way through is no less applicable to the last few years of British and European politics.
That says a lot for the persistency with which Irish men on the one side or the other are able to pursue their controversies. It says a great deal for the power which Ireland has, both Nationalist and Orange, to lay their hands upon the vital strings of British life and politics, and to hold, dominate, and convulse, year after year, generation after generation, the politics of this powerful country.”
Another few generations on, the power of Ireland to hold, dominate, and convulse the vital strings of British life and politics is as strong as ever, Churchill’s grandson will step down as an MP, and this contest will be between Michelle Gildernew of Sinn Féin, and Tom Elliott of the Ulster Unionist Party.
It will be close, because it is almost always close. In 1955 it was decided by 261 votes. 447 votes in 1970. 53 votes in 2001. And the tightest result of all in 2010, when 4 votes gave the seat to Gildernew. Elections in the past having been decided by less people than could be transported to a polling station in a Renault Clio, there probably won’t be one key factor. Everything is crucially important.
Both the SF and UUP campaigns will be working, as ever, to maximise turnout from their respective communities on the day. Both will be working now to ensure that anybody who has booked a week of winter sun in the second week of December posts their ballot before leaving the country.
In 2017 there were 3 other candidates in the field. The SDLP received 2587 votes, Alliance 886, and the Greens 423. On that occasion Michelle Gildernew triumphed by a margin of 895 votes.
No candidate other than Gildernew or Elliott can harbour any realistic hope of winning this election, but the makeup of the field has the potential to be a crucial. There isn’t yet confirmation of a Green candidate at this election. Alliance will be represented by Matthew Beaumont, an unsuccessful candidate in Enniskillen DEA at the local election earlier this year. The SDLP are running a local councillor, Adam Gannon, who represents Erne West DEA.
Brexit will be a huge issue in this border constituency. The UUP go into this election, as they did the 2016 referendum, supporting Remain. In the meantime though they have support leaving the EU, and their support for remain has never felt particularly firm. Tom Elliott was the MP for this area in 2017 and voted to trigger Article 50.
If Brexit is the issue which can convince a handful of voters to vote for Gildernew rather than one of the minor parties, that may be enough to secure her position. However this constituency has been a 2 horse race for quite some time, without a steady portion of voters casting a ballot for one of the main candidates. It feels reasonable to assume the group of people still voting for the minor parties in this constituency are dogged partisans for those parties.
There seems to be a building consensus of opinion that Fermanagh & South Tyrone is slowly moving out of reach of Unionism. I do not share in that opinion. The bookies offer odds of 5/2 that Tom Elliott will triumph for unionism. Whilst I expect another very narrow victory for Michelle Gildernew, my hunch is that the price offered for Elliott represents the best value available for a punter who is looking for an upset in this election.
After all. Somebody’s Renault Clio might break down.
Prediction: Sinn Féin HOLD
Current Odds: SF 1-4, UUP 5-2, 100-1 bar

Art as Politics: Journey Through Belfast’s Turbulent History.
Although it is often overlooked by tourists in favour of London or Edinburgh, Belfast is steadily becoming a must-visit Irish city. For a decade now, Belfast has been working on its public image, leaving behind bombs and sectarianism as relics of a conflict that people would prefer to move on from. One of the major draws to Belfast, however, is the incredible street art which often makes reference to the recent past of political conflict. Street art tours are fast becoming an interesting, alternative way of experiencing the city, allowing tourists an insight into different communities’ experiences of the Troubles.
In West Belfast, Catholic and Protestant communities are divided by so-called ‘Peace Walls’ which run in the middle of famous neighbourhoods, essentially protecting people from each other. These walls are the sites of incredible street art- predominately political murals which tell the stories of different communities. Along the Falls Road, (a central road within a staunchly Catholic Republican community), visitors can see a variety of murals depicting famous events and messages of solidarity with other national liberation struggles. One especially notable mural depicts a handshake between an Irish and Palestinian political prisoner, in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle.
Within the Falls community, there are other must-see murals. On the side of the Sinn Fein headquarters sits the iconic image of Bobby Sands, famously the first 1981 Hunger Striker to die, having been just elected as MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone. This is a brilliant example of how Belfast’s street art is an accessible, alternative way for tourists to learn about the city. The visual medium makes the artwork digestible and crosses linguistic and cultural barriers.

#OTD in 1981 – Bobby Sands was elected to Westminster in the Fermanagh/South Tyrone by-election, while on hunger strike in Long Kesh Prison, as MP for the constituency.
Shortly after the beginning of the strike, Frank Maguire, the Independent Republican MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone, died suddenly of a heart attack, precipitating the April 1981 by-election. The sudden vacancy in a seat with a nationalist majority of about five thousand was a valuable opportunity for Bobby Sands’ supporters to unite the nationalist community behind their campaign. “They have nothing in their whole imperial arsenal that can break the spirit of one Irishman who doesn’t want to be broken” – Bobby Sands MP
Bobby Sands was an Irish republican, an IRA Volunteer and a key figure in the fight against British imperialism in the north of Ireland during the 1970s and early 1980s. He came to public prominence during the 1981 hunger strike when he led the protest by men in the H-Blocks of Long Kesh and women in Armagh Jail who sought political prisoner status. Bobby endured years of solitary confinement and beatings. During his imprisonment he was elected MP for the constituency of Fermanagh and South Tyrone.
Bobby began his hunger strike on 1st March 1981 and died after sixty-six days on the 5th May 1981.
In the aftermath of his death he has become an international figure that inspires not only Irish republicans in their pursuit of freedom from British rule, but people around the world in the fight for their rights.
The Bobby Sands Trust
It is figures like Bobby that I turn to when it comes to our present oppression. We are all political prisoners when it comes to the Global Climate Crisis, yes we still live in our homes and not locked behind bars like Bobby, but we are forced to live with a ticking clock reminding us that the so called leaders of this world hold our lives in their hands.

Guardians seem to have paid attention to alerts not to send kids into school except if it was a final retreat, as indicated by head educators. Schools in the UK have shut to diminish the spread of coronavirus - and are just open to take care of the offspring of "key specialists" and powerless youngsters. Heads' pioneer Geoff Barton said starting reports on Monday morning recommended understudy numbers were "reasonable". There had been fears too many would show up for drained instructor numbers. In any case, Mr Barton, pioneer of the ASCL head educators' association, stated: "Beginning criticism demonstrates that guardians have paid attention to calls to utilize the crisis arrangement in schools just if they are key laborers who have no choice accessible to keep their youngsters at home." He said school staff were appreciative to guardians for reacting to alerts and any place conceivable keeping youngsters at home. This is just the principal morning and a full picture will set aside some effort to rise, however the early reports may ease worries that families would keep on sending their youngsters to class, as opposed to as a back-up possibly to be utilized if "completely essential". Youngsters have been advised to remain at home over the UK. At Enniskillen Royal Grammar School in County Fermanagh, in Northern Ireland, head Elizabeth Armstrong said "few students" were in school on Monday morning. Keeping schools open to care for the offspring of key specialists -, for example, NHS, crisis or transport staff - was expected to assist guardians with propping up to work and to keep up basic administrations. Yet, there were stresses this could be deciphered too generally and schools, with their own decreased staff numbers, would be not able to adapt. Guardians in Wales asked to keep kids out of school School just a 'final retreat' guardians told in Northern Ireland MPs to discuss crisis coronavirus powers Most recent as countries battle to end the spread of coronavirus Mary Bousted, joint general secretary of the National Education Union, had cautioned of an absence of lucidity about which families were qualified to have their youngsters cared for in school. She said schools were having to "manage various requests from guardians". Paul Whiteman, leader of the National Association of Head Teachers, had said that even the offspring of key laborers should attempt to discover different choices to class. "This isn't the same old thing, keep your family at home assuming there is any chance of this happening," said Mr Whiteman. "Leave the couple of spaces accessible for those that genuinely have no other option." The primary morning of another sort of school For those youngsters beginning their week at home, schools have been putting exercises and coursework on the web so students can stay aware of their investigations. At Hampton Hill Junior School in Richmond, London, staff have had crisis instructional meetings in how to utilize an internet learning framework and all kids were given with a sign in so they can telecommute. "We'll be remotely accessible to address any inquiries," Tracey Banister, the school's unique instructive needs co-ordinator, told the BBC. Ms Banister said the state of mind in school, which is open for key laborers' youngsters and powerless kids, is grave. "I believe it's an altogether different state of mind toward the beginning of today," she said. "In the workforce conference, we as a whole sat further separated - there is unquestionably an alternate state of mind and perhaps anxiety." Pradeep Shetty, a carer whose girl is qualified to go to class, says the present circumstance is hard for everybody - for the individuals who will be at home those as yet coming to class. Mr Shetty says those kids who have come to class will before long discover it is altogether different from a customary timetable. "It's difficult for them to take also - it is anything but an ordinary thing, just to be here without their companions."

#BBCTheView Leaders Interviews: Naomi Long
Naomi Long had a bad night with Mark Carruthers. I don’t think Alliance should be too downhearted though. Party leaders having a tough time during their interview on The View is quite simply the price of doing business. Carruthers is excellent at this and obviously prepares thoroughly. And it certainly wasn’t all bad. “You can hardly say all of a sudden about something that happened 18 years ago Mark” was a scoring punch that. In that exchange at least she came out on top.
Long may have been the victim last night, but she has the advantage of going first and having her interview furthest in the rear view mirror come election day. When it comes to being beaten up by Mark Carruthers, it isn’t just Sinn Féin who will be saying tiochfaidh ar lá. That day will also come for Foster, Eastwood and Aiken.
As I remarked on Twitter though, the format is savage. The interviews are bad enough, but to have to sit there as the commentators run the rule over your performance and a director just waiting to cut a shot of your reactions must be excruciating. Alex Kane and Fionnuala O Connor didn’t quite do the ‘good cop/bad cop’ routine. It was perhaps more ‘friendly uncle/scolding schoolmistress’.
I do feel Long made a strategic error though. The bar Alliance set for themselves to clear at the European election in May probably isn’t achievable. In that election tactical voting worked in their favour and they had Long, far and away their most popular figure, on every single ballot paper. In this election they will probably lose as much as they gain in the tactical voting swings and roundabouts, and even their better known candidates like Farry or Bradshaw have nothing like the profile Long enjoys.
With those factors being the case, success or failure comes down to East Belfast and North Down. If they take one of those seats December 13th will be a good day for Alliance. If they take more than 1 seat it will be the best day in their history. Belfast South will look after itself. If they find a way to take the seat there it’s incredibly likely the same swing will also send the other 2 their way.
With that being the case and with no nationalist opponents they need to take votes from the UUP. The tactic that can deliver those votes is asking very legitimate questions about just how committed to remaining in the EU the UUP actually are.
Some of the UUP candidates cut very plausible remain Unionists, Danny Kinahan for example, but the record of others can easily be exploited. Before the show went on air the UUP announced they have selected Tom Elliott in Fermanagh & South Tyrone. Elliott was an MP in 2017 and voted to trigger Article 50, and quick google turned up this quote from Mr Elliott in a 2016 Fermanagh Herald article
“My heart basically says to get out while my head would say that I need to reconsider that but on balance, I’m just about in favour of voting to leave Europe”.
In 2011 as the south faced a financial crisis, Enda Kenny asked Fianna Fáil voters to "lend us your vote” and enough did to make him Taoiseach. As the NI faces into the Brexit crisis Alliance need UUP remainers and Green Party voters in 2 constituencies to lend them their votes. The “Remainer Againer” credentials of the UUP are highly questionable. Naomi Long should have done a lot more to point that out.
