Netanyahu trades barbs with defense minister over Gaza war
Yoav Gallant called the idea of total victory over Hamas “gibberish,” which the premier slammed as an “anti-Israel” narrative
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant have clashed over the country’s goals in the Gaza war, exposing a rift within the Israeli government. Gallant was dismissive of Netanyahu’s promise to achieve “total victory” over Hamas in Gaza, according to Israeli media, which cited Tally Gotliv, an MP from the ruling Likud party. At a private security briefing at the Knesset on Monday, Gallant, who has frequently called for a ceasefire agreement with Hamas, described Netanyahu’s goal as “gibberish” and a “beating of war drums.” Shortly after the meeting, Gotliv took to X (formerly Twitter) to criticize the defense minister, calling on the prime minister to fire him. Later in the day, Netanyahu’s office issued a statement, accusing Gallant of adopting an “anti-Israel” stance, and suggesting he direct his criticism at Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, describing him as “the only obstacle” to a deal. “When Gallant adopts an anti-Israel narrative, he hurts the chances of reaching a hostage deal,” the statement read, as quoted by the Times of Israel.

Washington slams Israeli minister’s ceasefire criticism
The statement reiterated Netanyahu’s “absolute victory” pledge, which is reportedly seen by the cabinet as necessary for ending the hostilities and freeing over 100 remaining hostages abducted by Hamas in the wake of its October 7 attack on Israel, which triggered the war. “This is the clear directive of Prime Minister Netanyahu and the cabinet, and it is binding on everyone – including Gallant,” the statement read. It did not mention the possibility of removing Gallant from his position, and Israeli media later reported that Netanyahu was not considering such a move. The spat attracted the attention of Hamas, with political bureau member Izzat al-Rishq saying in a statement late on Monday that Gallant’s words “confirm what we have always said: that Netanyahu is lying to the world” and “all he cares about is the continuation and expansion of the war.” Al-Rishq called on the international community to “exert pressure on Netanyahu and his government to stop the aggression and the war of genocide and reach an exchange deal.”

Last week, Egyptian, Qatari and US mediators called on Israel and Hamas to resume negotiations, proposing to finalize the details of a ceasefire and hostage release at a meeting planned for August 15. The joint proposal called on both sides to conclude a ceasefire and trade the hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian detainees in Israeli custody. Previous rounds of talks failed, with West Jerusalem and Hamas unable to agree on key terms, such as the presence of Israeli forces in Gaza and the return of Palestinians to the north of the enclave.

UK Starts Post-Brexit Trade Deals with Australia and New Zealand
- Australia and New Zealand trade deals to enter into force at midnight on Wednesday - Special shipments of handpicked UK goods including signed Beano comics, personalised Cambridge Satchels, Brighton Gin and Burleigh pottery among very first to be sent under the new arrangements - Deals remove tariffs on all UK goods exports Down Under and could mean lower prices for UK consumers From today , UK businesses will be able to sell to Australia and New Zealand more easily as the UK’s trade deals with the countries, the first negotiated from scratch since we left the EU, come into force. Under the deals’ beneficial terms tariffs on all UK goods exports to Australia and New Zealand will be removed, unprecedented access to these markets for services unlocked, and red tape slashed for digital trade and work visas. Each region and nation of the UK is expected to benefit. Tailored to the UK’s strengths, the deals are set to deliver an economic boost by driving bilateral trade up by 53% with Australia and 59% with New Zealand. The agreements could also mean reduced prices for UK consumers on favourites such as wine, Tim Tams and kiwi fruit and lowered costs on machinery parts for UK manufacturers. The announcement comes after the UK, Australia and New Zealand completed their domestic ratification processes, allowing the deals to enter into force. In the UK this required primary legislation in the form of the Trade (Australia and New Zealand) Bill.
Kemi Badenoch October 2022 official Cabinet portrait. Photo by Skskwekjefbbffjske. Wikimedia. Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch said: Today is a historic moment as our first trade deals to be negotiated post-Brexit come into effect. Businesses up and down the country will now be able to reap the rewards of our status as an independent trading nation and seize new opportunities, driving economic growth, innovation and higher wages. International Trade Minister Nigel Huddleston will tour DHL’s Southern Distribution Centre near Heathrow to see off two handpicked consignments of UK goods, some of the first to be sent to Australia and New Zealand under the new deals. Iconic British goods from across the country including signed Beano comics, Penderyn Single Malt Welsh Whisky, Brighton Gin, The Cambridge Satchel Co. bags and Fever-Tree mixers are all among the items which will be sent from the UK government to the Australian and New Zealand trade ministers. Many of the items included will benefit from the removal of tariffs under the deals. The parcels will also include an England cricket top signed by James Anderson and Emma Lamb, a Wales rugby shirt signed by the men’s team and a real tennis racket from Gray’s of Cambridge.
Official portrait of Nigel Huddleston MP. Photo by Richard Townshend. Wikimedia. Minister for International Trade, Nigel Huddleston, said: It is incredibly exciting to be visiting DHL to see some of the first shipments leave the UK, knowing that when they arrive Down Under they will benefit from our brand new deals. Australia and New Zealand are two of our closest friends and likeminded partners and our trade deals secure favourable terms for British exporters, removing tariffs on all UK goods and slashing red tape. Alongside the new trade agreement with Australia, more young Brits will benefit from life-changing opportunities Down Under thanks to the expansion of our shared Youth Mobility and Working Holiday Maker visa schemes. On 1 July 2023 the age limit for UK applicants going to Australia will go from 30 to 35 years old, and from 1 July 2024 Brits will be able to stay in Australia for up to three years without having to meet specified work requirements. The consignments will be sent via express air freight with DHL, which is accelerating to low carbon operations with a commitment to reach zero emissions logistics by 2050 globally. Moving more than 100,000 shipments per day for UK businesses, Australia, New Zealand and other CPTPP countries are popular markets, with expectations for continued growth. CEO of DHL Express UK Ian Wilson said: The new free trade agreements with Australia and New Zealand provide businesses with a great opportunity to capitalise on the demand in these markets for British goods. We are delighted to have marked the commencement of these deals with a visit from the International Trade Minister to our site today, in which he had the chance to meet businesses and see the important role our colleagues play in the global economy. Through our recent collaboration with the Department for Business and Trade, we have been able to explain the new deals through webinars and simplified guides which we hope will help our customers achieve even greater international growth. Both free trade agreements are also part of the UK’s strategic tilt to the Indo-Pacific region and complement our accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) – a huge trade bloc which will have a total GDP of £12 trillion once we join. The deals include robust protections for British farmers, including staging tariff liberalisation for sensitive goods over time. Other key benefits of the deals include: - Access to Australian work visas for UK service suppliers without being subject to its changing skilled occupation list and enabling Brits to work in New Zealand more freely - Flexible rules of origin and removal of tariffs on all UK exports to both markets - Advanced rules on digital trade which cut red tape, unlock the free flow of data and give businesses confidence their valuable intellectual property will be protected - Access to government contracts and investment opportunities, including equal footing to compete for an additional £10 billion of Australian public sector contracts per year and high investment screening thresholds for New Zealand - Progressive opportunities to grow our low-carbon economy through liberalised tariffs on environmental goods and encouraging investment in low-carbon technology - Environment chapters reaffirming our commitments to the Paris Agreement and recognising our right to regulate to meet Net Zero Founder and Managing Director of Brighton Gin Kathy Caton said: In an increasingly competitive and global market removing trade barriers is exactly the support that the British gin industry needs. With a Brighton in every state in Australia, one of our goals is to see Brighton Gin being served in every one! Hopefully the free trade agreement gets us one step closer to that. CEO of Frugalpac Malcolm Waugh said: Frugalpac produces the world’s first paper bottle for wines and spirits and the machines that make them. Our Frugal Bottles, which are made from 94% recycled paperboard and have a carbon footprint six times lower than a glass bottle, are now sold in 22 countries including Australia and New Zealand. The Department for Business and Trade has been hugely supportive of Frugalpac and these free trade agreements will boost our plans to export machines to help the Australian and New Zealand drinks industry to further decarbonise. The Department for Business and Trade is working with firms of all sizes from across the country to explain how they can harness these trade agreements to grow their business. Dedicated resources are available to help businesses every step of the way as they seize these new opportunities. Cabinet reshuffle in TN: PTR shifted to IT, Thangam Thennarasu to Finance; Rajaa gets Industries
Incidentally, the portfolio change for PTR came weeks after the release of audio clips attributed to him in which he allegedly charged that the chief minister’s son and son-in-law have amassed wealth.
CHENNAI: In a major reshuffle of portfolios, Chief Minister MK Stalin today shifted Palanivel Thiaga Rajan (PTR) from the finance portfolio to information technology and made Thangam Thennarasu the new Finance Minister of Tamil Nadu.
As expected, TRB Rajaa, who was sworn in as a minister has been given a key portfolio of industries. T Mano Thangaraj will be the Minister for Milk and Dairy Development, hitherto looked after by SM Nasar, who has been dropped from the cabinet. MP Saminathan, Information Minister has been given an additional portfolio of Tamil development.
PTR will now handle the subjects of information technology and digital services. Rajan, in a quick message, thanked the chief minister for the opportunity given to him as finance minister as well as for allocating the information technology portfolio now. He also recalled his tenure as the finance minister of Tamil Nadu for the past two years.
Thangam Thennarasu, who has been made Minister for Finance and Human Resources Management, will handle the following subjects: planning, pensions, pensionary benefits, statistics and archaeology.
Incidentally, the portfolio change for Palanivel Thiaga Rajan came weeks after the release of audio clips attributed to him in which he allegedly charged that chief minister’s son Udhayanidhi Stalin and son-in-law Sabareesan have amassed wealth. Rajan said the audio clips are fabricated ones and the chief minister also sought to downplay it saying he did not want to speak anything on the issue as it would give publicity to those engaged in cheap politics. The second audio clip was released by BJP state president K Annamalai.
TRB Rajaa, MLA from the Mannargudi Assembly constituency was sworn in as a minister at a simple function held at the Durbar hall of the Raj Bhavan here. Governor RN Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to Rajaa in the presence of Chief Minister MK Stalin. The swearing-in ceremony was over in eight minutes. Later, the reshuffled cabinet headed by the chief minister took a group photo with the governor.
As expected Rajaa has been allotted industries portfolio. Rajaa, son of DMK treasurer and leader of the DMK parliamentary party TR Baalu, is a part-time member of the State Planning Commission. Rajaa has been a member of the Tamil Nadu Assembly for three terms since 2011.
MP Saminathan, Minister for Information has been given additional portfolios of Tamil development, previously handled by Thangam Thennarasu. After the reshuffle, Saminathan will be handling the following subjects: Tamil Official Language and Tamil culture, information and publicity, film technology and Cinematograph Act, newsprint control, stationery, printing, and government press.
Meanwhile, within a minute after the portfolio change was announced, PTR, in a lengthy message in Twitter, said: “The past two years have been the most fulfilling in my life. Under the leadership of CM MK Stalin, I presented one revised budget (2021 — ’22) during the pandemic, and two annual budgets (’22 — ’23, ’23 — ’24) post-pandemic. Despite inheriting record deficits and debt ratios, we have invested in a record number of social welfare schemes as well as record capital spending, all while delivering record-setting fiscal improvements. This is the epitome of my public service, and indeed of my life.”
PTR also said while fiscal consolidation and social spending are necessary steps for an equitable society, the drivers of development and growth are investment, enterprise expansion, and job creation.
PTR also thanked the chief minister for assigning him the portfolio of Information Technology — globally the №1 industry for investment and job creation today. “We know that technology shapes the future. Though Tamil Nadu was a pioneer in this field in Thalaivar Kalaignar’s time, we have unfortunately lagged our true potential in this sector in the last decade or so. I plan to build on the great efforts of my predecessor T Mano Thangaraj to attract more investments, accelerate job-creation, and deliver growth at a pace that will re-establish Tamil Nadu as a leading state in IT,” PTR added.
PTR also expressed confidence that his own experience in establishing and managing a pioneering Global Capability Centre 15 years ago, and the connectivity with the IT & ITES Industry gained during my professional career, would enrich his efforts in this new role.
“I wish the incoming Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu great success and many more achievements as he assumes responsibility today. I am sure he will accelerate the progress already made and deliver new records in his tenure. I thank my leader CM MK Stalin again, both for providing me with the previous portfolio for two years, and for this exciting new role to serve the people,” PTR added.

Shivraj returns to Bhopal as cabinet expansion delayed again
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who has been camping in Delhi for two days with key BJP leaders for consensus on cabinet expansion, returned to Bhopal on Tuesday morning.
Chouhan had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Monday to discuss cabinet expansion in the state, but that seems to have delayed as no consensus could emerge.
Chouhan and state government officials along with Madhya Pradesh BJP president Vishnu Dutt Sharma and State General Secretary Suhas Bhagat had gone to Delhi on Sunday and there was a possibility that a second extension of the cabinet could take place on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Apart from Prime Minister, Chouhan met party’s national president J.P. Nadda, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, newly elected Rajya Sabha member Jyotiraditya Scindia in Delhi to reach a consensus on cabinet expansion.

Eleven years ago, Ed Miliband made a party conference speech that must have seemed a great idea at the time. It was a denunciation of predatory capitalism that in retrospect seems very prescient, and went down well enough in the hall. It was only afterwards, when journalists started challenging him to name names, that things hit the buffers. Come on, then; if they’re so awful, who are they, these bastards ruining life for everyone? The minute his team hesitated, presumably afraid of being sued, the pack pounced. Is Rupert Murdoch a predatory capitalist? What about the guy who runs BHS? Or Sainsbury’s, or Next? A somewhat bruised Miliband ended up insisting the point was not to make “moral judgments about individuals”. It’s easy to generalise about your enemies but hard, it turns out, to be specific.
Liz Truss has just fallen into a similar trap. The Conservative party audience clapped her attack on the “anti-growth coalition” she blamed for Tory failures to deliver over the last 12 years, because it was essentially a list of people they dislike: Scottish nationalists, Brexit deniers, north London liberals who say snide things about them on the BBC. It was only on contact with the real world that things began to fall apart.
In her speech, Truss championed Britain’s right to stuff itself on junk food. So is Jamie Oliver, patron saint of healthy eating, now an Enemy of Growth? Downing Street couldn’t rule out the possibility. Well, there’s a game any interviewer can play. Is national treasure David Attenborough, who has argued against prizing growth at all costs, on the axis of evil? What about Tory donors shorting the pound, or the Tory MP who famously vowed to lie down under a bulldozer to stop the expansion of Heathrow? (Blond guy, rumpled hair, don’t hear so much from him lately.) And then there’s the man who once argued that, instead of bankrupting the environment in an endless rush for growth, we must “see Nature’s capital and her processes as the very basis of a new form of economics”. That would be King Charles, currently banned from representing Britain at Cop27.
What I do give Truss credit for is drawing her dividing lines in crayon, not blood. This stuff is so patently silly that it lacks the malevolent power of previous Conservative attempts to create bogeymen – “citizens of nowhere”, say, or “enemies of the people” – which seemed to summon something truly horrible from the depths. Truss doesn’t instantly fall back on culture wars when in trouble, or at least not yet. She’ll hit you in the pocket, but not so much below the belt, at least not yet. Her oddly dispassionate tone – during her speech she never once explained in human terms how growth would actually change your life or mine – makes for poor demagoguery, a small but real mercy after the last few years. This all feels less like a sinister new government front opening up and more like something an opposition would say in its early, hit and miss stages; rather like the time William Hague’s team tried and failed to coin “pebbledash people” as a clunky catchphrase for the voters they wanted to attract.
There are sensible ideas buried somewhere beneath the chaos of the last fortnight, too, including an early but unsuccessful attempt to change the record on immigration. Truss’s growth plan would, we were told, create more avenues for legal immigration, a belated recognition that flourishing economies are open ones, which was promptly torpedoed this week by the home secretary, Suella Braverman, declaring that, personally, she’d like to cut immigration to the “tens of thousands”. But at least somewhere round the cabinet table is a rational head acknowledging that the post-Brexit pulling up of drawbridges has left crops rotting in the fields and exacerbated dire staff shortages in health and social care. There have been attempts to reset the relationship with the EU, too, amid tantalising rumours that a deal on the Northern Ireland protocol might be close enough to avoid a self-harming trade war with Europe. Even the growth argument masks a welcome recognition that Britain hasn’t built enough houses, and that they’ll have to go in someone’s back yard.
But successive Tory prime ministers have been pleading with Tory conferences to overcome their inner nimby for years now, and it’s not the fault of anyone on Truss’s ludicrous list that they haven’t. It’s not “Brexit deniers” who will knock an estimated 4% off Britain’s productivity either, but Brexit enthusiasts. She can’t honestly confront what holds a Conservative government back, because all too often it’s Conservatism.
Just as Miliband put his finger on something crucial in predatory capitalism, even if he couldn’t quite find the language to land it, Truss has identified a genuine issue with Britain’s ability to get stuff done. From big infrastructure projects to action on climate, governments of all stripes do constantly put off difficult decisions for the next lot. There might well be something refreshing about a Conservative party using its last months in power – and these do feel like its last months – to grasp some nettles, sparing its successor the job.
But that would require a commanding authority Truss doesn’t possess. Barely a month in, her cabinet already says and does more or less as it pleases. The old joke that no matter who leads the Conservatives, somehow Michael Gove always ends up in charge, rang true as he roamed the conference fringe dictating what look suspiciously like terms for backbench rebels – although interestingly, he’d agree with Truss on housebuilding. Mockery aside, she has clearly identified a problem. It’s just that, like disappointed oppositions down the ages, she isn’t going to be its solution.
