Bad Fictional Data vs Fictional Bad Data
WARNING: This post will include discussion of a name that might be Alice Dyer's deadname. I won't be calling Alice by this name or using it in the context of that name being a pointer to Alice, but I will be using the name, uncensored, when talking about where and why the name appeared in chdb.xls .
----
You may know that as part of the ARG, the sleuths on Statement Remains uncovered a document called chdb.xls, allegedly a list that has something to do with The Magnus Institute. There's a list of names, ID numbers, first and last names, dates of birth, and information apparently related to each person's "score" in an assortment of psychological/personality tests. Three of the names in particular have stood out in a lot of analyses: Samama Khalid, Gerard Kaey [sic], and Connor Dyer.
You likely don't know that the commonly linked version of the spreadsheet, ported to Google Docs and linked in the TMAGP ARG Masterdoc, is presented out of order. (I'm guessing they didn't lock down editing until it was already all out of order from various people messing with it - totally understandable, this is not a callout post, thank you for making this easily accessible to people.)
But let me tell you about something I discovered by looking at the spreadsheet in its original order, and the almost certainly incorrect rabbit hole of theorizing it has sent me down.
Bad Fictional Data
Until episode 2 I had the same thought about the Dyer listed in the spreadsheet that I think most people did: that it was Alice's deadname, and that she had therefore been one of the Institute's young subjects. But after Alice had absolutely no reaction when Sam mentioned the Magnus Institute to her in episode 2, I now think this is significantly less likely.
Don't get me wrong: it's still reasonable to think that the Dyer listed in chdb.xls is Alice. Maybe she had some kind of supernatural experience that wiped her memory. (It probably wasn't that Alice was too young to remember, as the Dyer on the spreadsheet is listed as being at Piaget Stage 3, which occurs from 7-11 years old; but it's always possible that the Magnus Institute was using the names of legitimate psychological tests to hide their tracks when recording more esoteric data.) The point is, this isn't hard evidence that Alice has no connection to the Magnus Institute; it just made me go looking for more evidence.
I went back to the spreadsheet to look for more clues about whether or not this was Alice's deadname. What I found instead was some extremely sloppy fake data at the bottom of the spreadsheet.
For context, here are first ten names in the spreadsheet:
Note how each ID begins with the name's first and last initial.
Now check out the last ten names:
Not only do these IDs no longer always match their subjects' names, they occur in order: CD, EF, GH, IJ, KL, MN, OP, QR, ST, UV. The first names of each pair match the first letter of each ID, but many, though not all, of the surnames don't match the second letter.
My first thought was that whoever Rusty Quill had contracted to generate these names had gotten sloppy at the end of the list, created the IDs all at once using this alphabetical pattern, and picked names to fill in that roughly matched the IDs. But hey, we could use this to our advantage! Any name that was filled in as part of a series of IDs with an alphabetical pattern like this could be removed from consideration for red string analysis - we'd know they were meaningless fakes added by a lazy contractor, and not clues or characters that might show up again later.
Scrolling back up the spreadsheet, we can see the person generating the data having more care the earlier we go. We find the beginning of the AA/BC/DE/FG/HI pattern at line 136, but at first, the names mostly conform to the initials they've been given. JK09874 "Josie Jordan" at line 154 is the first break from the "first two letters of the ID are their initials" pattern; and breaks occur more often the further you go down the sheet.
Scrolling up to before line 136 (AA09911 - Aaron Atkinson), while the pattern isn't yet at AB/CD/EF/GH levels of obviousness, the first initials are still in alphabetical order. Zoe Hart follows Yara Logan follows Xavier Freeman follows Wyatt Edwards. The data creator skips a few letters - for example Niamh Fenton is followed by Phoebe Emmett, and S and T are together in the same line in Skye Travers.
We can follow this less-obvious version of the alphabetical pattern up to an abrupt break right at line 118, above which the IDs don't follow an alphabetical pattern at all. (They might follow a different pattern, but it's not one that I've found yet.) So that means we can discount all the names in line 118 and below as purely fake, generated lazily by a contractor, and not worthy of our attention for the purposes of red-stringing. Right?
What the fuck?!
(highlight is my own, it is not present in the original document)
My first thought was that the sloppy data generator had done the funniest thing imaginable, sending everyone on a wild goose chase about Alice's deadname just by having the name "Dyer" on the brain while looking for a surname that started with D. This would be Very Funny. No plot relevance, no implications, just the brain fart that launched a thousand theories.
My second thought was that maybe Connor Dyer was the last legit name on the list, and whoever started filling the rest of the sheet in with alphabetical junk data was inspired by the "CD" initials in the first place - whoever it was went on from there.
These are both valid thoughts! But I prefer my third thought:
What if it's on purpose?
Fictional Bad Data
There is a very obvious break between the set of data that doesn't look obviously* fake, and the set of data that is immediately identifiable as such. If we assume that this was intentional - and I want to reiterate that it all being unintentional is still a very real possibility here - why would someone at Rusty Quill want the data to be structured like this?
If the sharp dividing line between reasonable-seeming data and obviously fake data is intentional on RQ's part, it would suggest that we should take the data above row 118 as in-universe real data, and the data below row 118 as in-universe falsified data. It suggests that someone, either at the Institute or after its demise, was adding nonexistent children to the roster of The Magnus Institute. Why would someone want to do that?
There are all kinds of possible reasons, but here are a few off the top of my and my theorizing buddies' heads:
Financial fraud (institutional edition). If the Magnus Institute received funding on a per-child basis, they'd have an incentive to inflate their numbers.
Financial fraud (researcher edition). One or more people on staff were blowing off their child-analysis sessions and recording fake numbers for fake children. This would be ballsy as hell if they could be fired for it, but it was the Magnus Institute, so there's decent odds they couldn't be.
Scientific fraud (faking conclusions edition). The Magnus Institute in the Protocolverse claimed to be doing research on giftedness in children, which is the kind of thing that you'd normally publish in a scientific journal. It's not unheard-of for dickhead academics to falsify data to generate statistically significant results, since statistically insignificant results aren't going to get you published.
Scientific fraud (obscuring paranormal bullshit edition). If the Magnus Institute was using legitimate psychological test names to record Fear-related test results, it's possible their results showed different patterns from what you would expect from the real tests. They could have added the fake children to balance out the dataset as a whole.
Pseudonyms. The children are all real, the Institute just started using fake names for them for privacy purposes. They couldn't go back and change the names they'd already written properly for some reason. Probably something paranormal.
Those are all pretty interesting possibilities, and if we could narrow them down, it might tell us something about what things were like at the Magnus Institute before it burned down!
And the other big question is: why did RQ make the dividing line between the two sections, the first likely-fake entry, Connor Dyer?
One straightforward reason could be as a troll, a red herring to watch fans get in a lather over. And once the community inevitably noticed all the obviously falsified entries, RQ could eat popcorn and watch us lose our minds over whether or not that's even a real entry! (That sounds really fun, I would absolutely do that.)
But let's dig a little deeper, and look at what Connor Dyer being on the border between the real and fake entries would mean in-universe. Because of its position as the border between real and fake, it would be very easy for that entry to be accidentally included in the wrong group - a real research subject discarded as fake, or perhaps more interestingly, a fake research subject accidentally reclassified as real.
Remember, if a name is fake in the context of the Magnus Institute's research, that doesn't mean that the name itself is made up. If I was trying to think of a name that fit the initials CD, and those were the initials of my next door neighbor's kid, I might just write their name in as a lark. Especially if it was my first time trying to get away with falsifying information: this is a kid that verifiably exists and lives in the area.
My theory, supported primarily by my love for The Implications instead of actual evidence
Twenty years on, after all institutional memory of the fraud was long gone, trans icon Alice Dyer applies to work for the OIAR - an institution that (according to this theory) has an unofficial preference for hiring former Magnus Institute kids.
They are very confused when Alice proceeds to act nothing like a former Magnus Institute kid. It doesn't occur to anyone that her entry might have been falsified. What reason would anyone have to do that?
----
* Of course people with a background in data analysis or statistics will see immediately that even above line 118 this is a wild-ass dataset that would raise red flags for falsification, but at least it's not "the alphabet over and over" levels of obvious.

Morning Sickness
SERIES MASTERLIST
WARNINGS: pregnant!reader, fluff, vomiting
WORDS: 1,311
PAIRING: Natasha Romanoff x f!Reader
A/N: keeping it cute until i post chapter 5 and my mob boss fic 🫶🏼
Normally, when your wife would come back from missions, you'd be in the kitchen cooking dinner or dressing up all nice for her. Usually, just so she'd take it all off — but you felt so tired and sick this morning you woke up. You had no idea why. Were you pregnant? Probably not. You couldn't even check either. You didn't have any tests at home left, and you certainly didn't feel like getting up to buy any. Everything seemed too much for you today. The sunlight felt like it burned your vision. Even getting up, you felt terrible. You felt like you were letting Natasha down by not doing anything special for her welcome back.
“Moya lyubov, I'm home!” she stated as she walked into the house. Noticing that you weren't waiting for her outside the door or anything she called your name. “Y/N? .. Babe, what's wrong?” you suddenly became aware of her presence in the room. “Darling you're home!” her brows her furrowed in concern, “are you feeling alright detka?” she gently placed her hands on your shoulders and sat next to you on the bed. “I– I actually don't know..?” she sighed as she had a stern look on her face. “Okay! Okay.. I was nauseous all day today. I'm sorry I couldn't make dinner, or dress up nice for you..” she pressed her lips against your cheek, “hey! Your health comes first. You don't have to make dinner or dress up, baby.”
You smiled at her, “thank you. But I want to.” “Are you sick? Have you gone to the infirmary to check up?” she questions with a brow risen up. “I couldn't- felt dizzy.” she frowned and planted a light kiss on your forehead. “How 'bout I take you?” you chewed on the inside of your cheek before replying. “Uh– there's no need for that! Could you just take me to the pharmacy?” she nodded and got up from the bed, throwing her leather jacket back on.
The drive to the local pharmacy was silent. A calmness in the silence, it seems. After marrying an Avenger, silence is usually a bad thing. She parked the car in the parking lot and got out of the vehicle. “Nat you can wait out here! Y– you don't have to go with me.” she seemed suspicious of your actions but didn't question. “You sure?” “Mhm!” you step out of the car and quickly make your way inside the store. You looked around for the pregnancy tests and grabbed a few.
“That'll be 7 dollars.” the cashier scanned your items and put them in a bag. “Thank you, have a nice day.” you say as you hand them the money and leave. You peeked at the car window before putting the tests you just bought in your purse. “You didn't buy anything?” she asked when you got back in the car. “Um.. no– the pharmacy was all out of the painkillers I get.” she shot a ‘if you say so’ look and pulled out the driveway.
The drive back home didn't take that long. The traffic outside died down within the time you were inside the pharmacy. “Do you feel any better detka?” you looked up at her and nodded. Truth is, you didn't feel any better at all. You felt like you needed to throw up as soon as you two came back home. The second she unlocked the door to the apartment, you bolted into the bathroom. Natasha didn't have the chance to interfere and follow you to make sure you were okay, either. You flipped your hair to the side and vomited inside the toilet. You felt so terrible that your eyes watered within seconds.
“Babe what's wrong? Do you want me to come in?” your wife shouted from the other side of the door. You whined as you laid your head against the marble walls, “mn.. No! No thanks, Natty.. I'm fine, don't worry.” she sighed as she rested her forehead against the other side of the bathroom door. She knew you were lying, but she wouldn't force you to tell the truth. As much as it pained her that you weren't feeling well.
You snatch your purse that was left on the floor a few minutes ago and take out the pregnancy tests with shaky hands. You and Natasha talked about having kids before. You just never realized it would happen so soon. So you took the tests and waited for the results. You wiped away any tears that left your tired eyes as you stood there, waiting to find out if you were pregnant or not.
You sucked in a sharp breath as you saw two lines on all three tests. They were all positive. Oh God. You paced around the space of the bathroom till you gathered enough courage to get out and talk to your wife. You knew she was standing right outside the door. “Natasha?” you step out of the bathroom with the tests behind your back. Natasha turned to face you, “what's wrong, moya lyubov?” you nervously laughed as you brought your gaze to the floor beneath you. “I.. have something to tell you.” it's not that you thought she'd get upset, you knew this had been a dream you both had for awhile but it all happened so rather suddenly you didn't have a chance to react properly.
The corners of your lips quirked up into a tight smile as you slowly brought up the tests and placed them on the nightstand. “Detka what–” you bit back some tears and spoke, “I'm pregnant.” you took a deep breath before you went on, “oh my God. We're having a baby darling. Can you believe it?” you could clearly see the genuine smile and the love in her eyes as she chuckled. “Krasivaya.. I- I think I just fell in love with you all over again.” you felt her palms against your waist, “I love you. So much, Natty. So much.” you felt tears prick your eyes, not because of sadness, no. Joy. Joyful tears. “And I love you so much more, baby.”
“We need to move houses, babe.” she says as she takes off her jacket and lays down next to you. “Mhm?” you scooted over and laid your head on her chest. “How does a ‘cozy little, average home in the middle of nowhere’ sound to you?” she asked as she gently stroked your hair. “It's perfect. She's gonna be perfect.” she looks down at you, “She? Babe. The baby's going to be a boy. I'm always right.” you rolled your eyes as you snuggled closer to her. “Sure you are.”
The happy moment didn't last long. You felt nauseous and ran back into the bathroom, this time with Natasha following you. “Let it all out detka.. awe.” she pulled your hair back as your hands clutched at the sides of the toilet. “Nat. If you don't shut u–” you got interrupted with the urge to puke again. “This is not how I thought I'd spend your day back home from the missions..” you flushed the toilet before rinsing your mouth off with water. “Well, I'm still happy with how today went.” you shot her a glare, “uh, your wife is nauseous and throwing up, have some class Romanoff.” you left the bathroom and went back into the bedroom.
As the minutes passed and the sky outside got darker, you fell asleep into a deep slumber on top of your wife. With her strong arms protectively wrapped around you.
He, your darling angel little boy. Oh, how you missed him dearly. Why did they take him from you. Why? Why. Why must the Red Room want Alex? What has he done to deserve this? Nothing. Your sweet little boy didn't do anything. And you wanted him back home.

One-Word Ficlet Prompt #1: Alcohol
Word count: 641
Starting off uploading my "I'm stuck in a room with testing students for four hours with nothing but a journal and pen" series with my favorite so far:
“San Lang, can you get drunk?” Xie Lian asked one day. They were seated at the table enjoying a suspiciously blue dinner when, apropos of nothing, the thought occurred to him.
Hua Cheng, whose mouth was full, let a raised eyebrow be his first response. Then, after he swallowed, he asked, “what brought this on?”
“Nothing in particular,” Xie Lian replied. “It just occurred to me. I know weaker ghosts can get drunk- or something like it- but you...?”
Hua Cheng considered the question, taking a sip of water.
“I could,” he eventually said. “But, unless it was spiritually powerful alcohol, it would only affect me if I let it.”
“So you’ve never been drunk before?”
“Why would I want to be?”
Well, Xie Lian couldn’t argue with that. The one time he’d been drunk had been a disaster, after all.
“And gege?” Hua Cheng, whose thoughts were surely walking a similar path, prompted.
“Ah, you’ve seen what I’m like,” Xie Lian laughed, light and sheepish, more from habit than humor. “I never wanted to repeat that experience. Besides, my cultivation banned alcohol.”
Hua Cheng nodded thoughtfully, and Xie Lian took that as a sign this thread of conversation was over, taking a few more bites of his food. And yet, after a short while, Hua Cheng suddenly said:
“But you don’t follow that path anymore.”
His tone was mild, but Xie Lian knew his husband well. If he brought it up now, there was more to it than that.
“Yes,” he agreed, watching Hua Cheng closely. “But alcohol has never tempted me much, anyway. Not like-” he coughed, cutting himself off, but the damage was done- Hua Cheng was smirking at him, a dog on a scent.
“Like what, gege?”
Don’t speak so innocently when you know what I mean! Xie Lian cried internally. Out loud, he hurriedly said, “nevermind, nevermind that. Why were you asking, San Lang?”
“I didn’t ask anything,” Hua Cheng pointed out, which was true. But he didn’t try to hide that there had been a question unspoken, for then he said, “I was just wondering if gege would ever want to change that.”
“Change... If I wanted to get drunk?” Xie Lian echoed, surprised.
“Mn.”
“Why... why would I?”
“It could be nice,” Hua Cheng offered.
“But I... I mean, San Lang, you saw what I was like last time... I don’t even remember most of it, but Feng Xin told me I caused a lot of trouble...”
“I would take care of you,” Hua Cheng promised simply, and like the lock of a door, everything clicked into place.
Ah.
So that’s it.
“Gege?” Hua Cheng asked, and Xie Lian realized some of his thoughts must have shown on his face.
“...” San Lang wants to take care of me? Xie Lian wasn’t shameless enough to say it. He knew he was right, though- oh yes, by now it was quite clear to anyone who paid attention (and many who didn’t) just how much the ghost king Crimson Rain Sought Flower got out of taking care of his husband.
Which apparently also extended to getting his husband intentionally drunk as some sort of do-over for the last time.
...Is this a sex thing? He wondered. But, in the end it didn’t matter. Nothing would happen unless he wanted it.
Which meant...
Xie Lian glanced away, trying to affect disinterest even though Hua Cheng could surely read the embarrassment right off of his face. “I’ll think about it,” he said quietly.
Hua Cheng smiled innocently, having heard all he truly wanted to hear. Xie Lian took another bite of food, resisting the urge to rub his forehead.
I really do spoil you... he thought. Yet, he couldn’t say he regretted it. There were much worse things he would do for Hua Cheng than getting drunk on purpose.

Tinfoil Hats for LitMoR
OKAY SO, here is a shitty conspiracy theory map for the connections between people in @grayintogreen's Life in the Margins of Redemption series on AO3.
Turns out Scrivener is useful for charts as well as drafting really long stories.
Here's a few excerpts to back this up:
Let's start with The Seven. They're the masterminds behind a lot of what's going on. The current members are Ashley Allard, Jayne Merriweather (both co-leaders), Gabriel Ferreira, Obann (idiot who doesn't know what's going on), Jourrael (geas), and Zerxus (geas).
Gabriel's reveal as a member included some background about the Seven:
His mother's line was a family of Tharizdun worshipers, much like the Merriweather family. Given that pattern, and that Yves Allard was also a worshiper, it's safe to assume the entire Allard family is as well, which explains Ashley's involvement.
But Ashley's the one running the plan about interfering with stuff, not Yves!
Presumably Ashley still plans to get the Laughing Hand, just not yet.
So that would be their Seven members. And they wanted to delay Cognouza's return! They did this by getting Lucien away from the Somnovem and interfering with the other Tombtakers gathering the crests.
Ashley is the one that ensured the MN would find a way to get Lucien away from the Somnovem because he put Twiggy and the Happy Fun Ball in their path.
Ashley's the one that intervened with Tyffial in Aeor, and (presumably) had Jayne (and maybe Obann) inflict a geas on Tyffial, Zoran, and Otis.
Jayne was personally invited to Yves Allard's party in OUADYA and knew Obann's plan for Yasha.
Oddly enough, Ashley wasn't at the party. He wasn't invited?! Some kind of falling out maybe. Ashley had a brother, so maybe there was some family strife that got resolved with murder so he could get the Blade of Broken Mirrors.
Ashley being the unfavorite Allard would explain SO MUCH about his need to lead and have everyone's attention.
But, anyway. At the same party, Jayne pissed off Molly to get him to go feral...
and kill Yves Allard...
and/or to get Molly to lose control and let the Somnovem take over? Or was that a test?
So the Seven know how to trigger Molly for sure. But to what end? When do they plan on making that shit permanent?
Gabriel also kept an eye on the Mighty Nein for Ashley while the group was in Darktow.
And Jayne checked in on the Somnovem after Lucien's rescue to ensure they were feeding off of the chains at the fane they had broken when they first escaped to the Astral Sea.
So the Seven are manipulating the Somnovem and the Nein, and they're waiting for some specific time to try to get Cognouza back. We just don't know when, nor why Molly would be useful as the Somnovem's puppet. Maybe they just want a body separate from Cognouza and the Nonagon's body has some specific use.
That's all we know about the Seven for now. They're behind everything and have some timeline they're working on.
Next is Shadycreek Run. There's a few loose ends there that need tying. First, when Lucien was 5, before the Dougals were killed, thugs showed up and offered 1,000 gold for Lucien.
Now, I thought it'd be the Jagentoths at first, BUT once the Dougals were murdered and the thugs took Lucien to the Jagentoths, Reese commented they could get 800 gold for him. They didn't have a buyer lined up!
So it couldn't be that the original buyer was from or went through the Jagentoths. It must have been that they heard about some buyer and decided to get some quick cash by taking Lucien by force, but they couldn't find whoever the original buyer was. So SOMEONE ELSE wanted Lucien as a kid and didn't get him.
Later, when Lucien, Cree, Tyffial, and Jurrell are caught by the Jagentoths, Ionos bragged that he found a rich buyer for him on the coast.
Which is where Yves Allard's estate was! We know Ashley is too young to have been plotting this scheme since Lucien was a kid (which would have been behind the 1000 gold offer), so it probably wasn't Ashley's plan. Thus, it might have been an older generation's plan. Yves? Probably not, since he was off having a party and being useless. Another Allard then!
And that brings up another thing: why would Jack Mardoon adopt Ophelia? C'mon, that was just too weird.
And it seems awful convenient that the Mardoons have a no kid policy. That means Lucien would have HAD to be left behind.
But Ophelia went through with it, leaving Lucien with the Dougals, and pretty much anyone else in the Run would have sold him in those instances above. It seems that plan fell through.
But the Allards were on the coast if that's actually true. So who was their contact in Shadycreek Run?
This brings us to Rowan.
At the Court of Nightmares party, Jester ran into a weirdo that stuck out just a bit too much!
Rowan is another name for the mountain ash, a tree that is native to Ireland and grows red berries that look like eyes. That's a little too convenient. Plus the Allards (Ashley and Yves) have names derived from trees! Ashley-> Ash and Yves is another word for the yew tree, which ALSO has red berries. Coincidence? I THINK NOT.
So let's figure out where else we might have seen Rowan. Rowan's appearance was unique because of asymmetrical bangs...
and gold eyes.
Caduceus also had a vision of a gold figure with antlers (very fey) near where his family was turned to stone.
And both of those are similar to Solana, who was the quartermaster on Gabriel's ship.
And again, Gabriel was tracking the Nein for Ashley. Now, granted, Rowan was a half-elf, whoever was at the Menagerie had antlers, and Solana was an eladrin. But you know what other fey-related race often has metallic skin/features? CHANGELINGS.

If so, Rowan could be anyone who has gold motifs. That is a LOT of people, admittedly. Fjord, Nott, Cree, Chance, and a few others have been described as having gold eyes. But maybe they need to be hazel. The only person seen up close enough to be sure was Rowan so far. Maybe we'll get a closer look at others.
And since there's a gap in Shadycreek Run, I bet Rowan (or IS THAT THEIR REAL NAME..?) was the contact in the Run for the Allards. Which means they would have been responsible for Jack adopting Ophelia. So Rowan has to be older and have some connection to the Allards, but probably NOT Yves since he wasn't doing anything.
SO Yves probably also had a sibling. MORE ALLARDS! But what happened to that one? Maybe the same thing that happened to Ashley's brother.
SO THAT'S MY CONSPIRACY THEORY FOR NOW.
#life in the margins of redemption#litmor#grayintogreen#congrats to Lucien for being super special so everyone wants him#that monkey's paw did you so much good#maybe just use it once next time#THE COLOR CODING WAS ENTIRELY HAPPENSTANCE#MY SUBCONSCIOUS IS GOOD AT COLOR CODING

Given the opportunity for Wen Qing to give Lan Wangji the ancient fantasy China version of The Shovel Talk about Wei Ying in any of your ‘verses that series of events could’ve happened, how do you see that going? 🍿👀
Anon, this is SUCH a good question, I have been thinking about it all week!
There’s actually a very limited window in which such a shovel talk could happen - it has to be after Wen Qing becomes seriously emotionally invested in Wei Wuxian (so let’s say, post-golden-core-transfer) but before she shuffles off this mortal coil. That narrows it down to Sunshot, the WWX Lotus Pier Depression Interregnum, and the Burial Mounds arc. And Wen Qing just flat-out isn’t around Wei Wuxian or Lan Wangji during those first two periods. So it’s got to be either a Burial Mounds thing, or take place in an AU.
I’ve already done the “AU” option, sort of, in The Dare - it’s not a shovel talk per se, because there aren’t any threats, but it’s a “Wei Wuxian is precious to me and very vulnerable so you better be fucking serious about this,” which I think is probably close enough. 😂 (Honorable mention to A Sword With No Hilt, in which Wen Qing delivers a shovel talk to Wei Wuxian on Lan Wangji’s behalf.)
As for the Burial Mounds... well, that happens to be my next WIP on deck, which is this one! (cw for sex work, not between the main characters) The fic has a scene that, while not quite a shovel talk, hopefully is close enough to fit the bill, and it’s below. (Note that, if you haven’t read the previous scene, linked in this paragraph, then this new scene will not make any sense.) Hope you enjoy!
As Wen Qing leads him through the settlement, she shows him a house, still in progress; fields and crops with their neat, orderly rows of green. There is not much to show, in truth – the amount of worked land is still small. She conspicuously does not offer to show him the interior of the palace, or any of the caves.
Once she has led him to the edge of the settlement, away from the others—which was clearly her intent all along—she pauses and looks out over the wasted landscape of cinder-grey trees.
“You were invited,” she says.
“Mn.”
She nods. “So you met Wei Wuxian in town. Before you came to the Burial Mounds.”
“Mn.”
Still not looking at him, she says, “Sometimes, Wei Wuxian goes to town in the morning, to buy food, or to take A-Yuan on an outing.”
“Mn.”
“Sometimes, he goes to town in the evening.”
Ah. Wen Qing knows, Wei Ying had said. Still, Lan Wangji says nothing.
“Yesterday, it was the evening,” she remarks.
Lan Wangji makes no response.
“Hanguang-jun met Wei Wuxian at the inn, perhaps.”
Anything Lan Wangji could say would only make this moment even more excruciating. He does not try.
Wen Qing nods, as if his silence is itself an answer. “And you came anyway.”
He is not sure what she means by that. “I came to see Wei Ying.”
“And having seen him,” she says, “you stayed.”
“Yes,” Lan Wangji replies. That was never in question.
Now, finally, she turns to him. A small smile hovers on her lips. “Hm,” she says, and nothing more. But he can tell that she had set him a test, and that he passed it. Good.

89 from the lemon 200 dialogue nanahiko
89. "Just pull the car over!" | nanahiko | wc: ~1.2k
a/n: The car that Nana is driving is a prototype Hercules, but I was actually debating if she should drive the truck that All Might does in the beginning of the series. Stick-shifts. They're apparently very hot to witness in action.
a/n 2: set in a nebulous period during the Nana Lives!AU, right before All Might makes his Japan debut.
//
“Don’t look shocked that I can drive, Sorahiko,” Nana scolds, but she gives him a tongue-in-cheek grin as she says it. She settles into the plush leather driver’s seat, stretches her legs and curls her fingers on the steering wheel, and then seems to realize that Sorahiko hasn’t closed her door yet. “Eh? Sorahiko?”
“Huh,” he says distantly.
“Earth to Sorahiko, we’re gonna be late for Toshinori’s plane! I don’t want to leave him stranded at Narita if we get stuck in traffic!”
The magic word is traffic. Sorahiko twitches and shuts her door, then circles the sleek pitch-black automobile to slide into the passenger’s seat. He buckles the seatbelt and inhales the undeniable scent of a new car. How long had Nana been driving this? When would she have found the time to--
He squirms, just slightly, at seeing Nana’s left hand wiggle the gear shift. When the engine purrs to life without issue and Nana eases out of the parking spot and into the streets, Sorahiko finds that his mouth is dry.
“So,” he starts, a little weak, “so the car…?”
Nana is merciful. She answers without prodding him to elaborate: “Testing it out for the Support Tech branch. They’re experimenting with armored super cars, after seeing David Shield’s Allmobile in the States.”
“Tell me this one isn’t named after Toshinori.”
“Haha! Of course not!” she laughs, and slows the car as she turns to the on-ramp, then accelerates to match the oncoming drivers. It’s effortless. It is unbelievably smooth, how Nana changes gears and checks her mirrors before steering into the fast lane. Nana adds, “This is only the prototype, Sorahiko. We’re not supposed to get attached to it yet.”
“Mn.” To distract himself, he investigates the dashboard. The interface is, thank gods, not some digital touch-screen panel. Buttons and dials remain the status quo; Sorahiko punches the switch for air-conditioning and lowers the set temperature. It might just be him, but he is uncomfortably warm under the collar.
“Excited?”
“What?”
“For Toshinori to be coming home,” Nana clarifies, much to Sorahiko’s relief. “Honestly, I’m just relieved for Kotarou. He’s been so sad without his big brother!”
Sad didn’t seem the right word to describe Kotarou’s outright surliness over leaving the States at the end of his elementary school days; the fact that Toshinori got to spend another year had rubbed Kotarou in a similarly wrong, but still different way. He had abandonment issues. Neither Sorahiko nor Nana would ever blame him for it, but at some point--Sorahiko grimaces. They’ll have to talk about that soon.
“It’s not like Toshinori’s staying at home,” he eventually grumbles. “He’s supposed to go apartment hunting, if he hasn’t searched the listings already.”
“But,” she returns, “Kotarou is planning to change schools according to wherever Toshinori chooses to move. Remember?”
“Oh. Yeah, you’re right.”
“Leaving us with some privacy,” Nana says, mild. Absolutely no emphasis on ‘privacy,’ but damn if it doesn’t send a shiver down Sorahiko’s spine anyway. “Ah, this sun--can you pass me my sunglasses?”
Sorahiko obliges. He pops open a compartment, finds the case and flicks it open, and feels another shiver run through him. Mirrored aviators. Discreetly, he checks Nana’s outfit again and has to swallow past his dry throat. Leather jacket. High-collared sleeveless top. Dark denim jeans and the beat-up work boots she never wore to the HPSC building.
“Here,” he says, handing Nana the glasses, wire arms already extended.
“Thanks.”
She slides them on, and the mirrored lenses glint with the sunlight. A few seconds later, Nana curses at the sedan slowing down the fast lane and threads the needle to bypass it. Sorahiko hears the acceleration, brief as it is.
“... So what do you think?”
“Of?”
Nana clicks her tongue. Rather exaggeratedly, she removes one hand from the wheel and leans her other elbow on the armrest, fingers idly caressing the gear shift. “Do you really think you’re subtle? All the gearheads in the Support branch told me that this is a sexy car. I won’t hold it against you.”
It’s hard to tell what’s burning hotter: his face, or the arousal in his core. Sorahiko tries to ignore the discomfort in his jeans. He manages to reply, “You dressed hot too. The glasses are a nice touch.”
She snickers, “Heh, I’ll give you a nice touch…”
“Nana!”
“What?”
“We’re literally on our way to pick up Toshinori! You can’t just--seduce me in a car that he’s going to sit in the backseat of!” he complains, rubbing his neck in an effort to diffuse the blush. “Plus, if this car’s going back to the engineers, then there’s a hundred percent chance that you get cited for misconduct or something.”
“‘Hundred percent’,” she mimics. “‘Misconduct or something.’ Ah, geez, Sorahiko, it’s not like you to think inside the box! Anyways, look at the time!”
Sorahiko does. And then he does a double-take. There’s several hours to Toshinori’s flight landing, and another guaranteed extra hour of Toshinori bumbling his way through customs. The only problem he can see is that there aren’t really spaces on the expressway to park the car. They’d have to turn on the hazard lights, and that would certainly earn them unwanted attention.
“Just have patience,” Nana says, and it’s meant to sound soothing, but now that Sorahiko knows she’s set the scene to deliberately rile him up, he can’t help but rise to the occasion.
“Just pull the car over!” he shoots back. “Anyone asks what’s the problem, just flash your HPSC card, right?”
“You know that’s definitely not how it works.”
“Help,” he says, deadpan, “I’m trapped in a car with a woman who intended for me to find everything sexy except for the fact that we’re picking up our fluff-headed intern from his study abroad.”
“It’s not sounding like you’re getting hot over the important stuff,” she huffs.
“I was,” Sorahiko admits.
“Well, get back to it.”
“‘Just have patience.’”
Nana leans closer to the center console. Her eyes stay on the road, but all of a sudden, Sorahiko thinks that she’s shifted her presence. Less playful, more intent. The tell is in her voice, which has dropped to a lower, more sultry register. She says, “The windows are polarized.”
“Sounds sketchy.”
“This is a government vehicle. No one’s going to pull us over unless I start driving like a maniac.” She licks her lips. “I’m going to park before heading into the airport. It’ll be out of the way. We aren’t going to have sex in the car, but, uh… Nothing stopping me from taking you against the car, you know?”
“Ah,” says Sorahiko faintly, and he fumbles for the lever to lower his seat. He loosens his seatbelt instead of taking it off completely. The air is cool, and his skin is hot, and Sorahiko’s head is spinning with the concept that Nana might have a latent exhibitionist streak. He unbuckles his belt and unbuttons his jeans, and shoves his hand down his pants for some fucking relief.
“Slowly,” she says.
A low hiss escapes him.
“Well, you don’t want to finish before I get my mouth on you, right?”
“Nana,” he replies in a voice so taut, strangers would think it curt instead of sexually-frustrated, “I hate being edged.”
“Ha! I know, I know. It’s a tough balancing act, huh?” Unbidden, Sorahiko scoots the denim layer down and leaves his briefs on; he curls his fingers at the base of his cock, doing his best not to fantasize. “You can hold out. It’ll be less than twenty minutes.”
“Speed up, then.”
She hums in assent.

I lost my job. And it was okay.
I actually needed that job. However, in the weeks (or maybe months) leading to my termination, I was already feeling like quitting. I was ready to go. But my finances aren't ready to let it go just yet. What made me feel like leaving was the constant pressure I feel from my manager, the fear of actually losing it while feeling so unprepared (which I used to think is the end of the world), and my declining health.
For nearly two years, I feel exhausted, which is likely caused by my irregular sleeping patterns. This led to a series of conditions I never thought I'd be diagnosed with at the age of 30. But here we are: married, 31, childless, with non-alcoholic fatty liver, stage two hypertension, and polycystic ovaries (PCOS). I take 8-10 pills per day: 2 for my reproductive health, 2 for my hypertension, 3 for my liver, 2 necessary supplements, and 1 for my uric acid. It feels like a life support, these medications. On some days when I forget or neglect on taking these, I immediately feel the effects. It is paralyzing. It caused me to make this second job a great need. For without it, how will I buy my medicines when my main job barely covers my expenses?
Like mentioned, I used to have two jobs. My supposed main source of income is teaching full-time. In the afternoons until 12:00 MN, I worked as a virtual assistant. That's another 8 hours of work; so in total, I had 2 full-time jobs that helped me cover my expenses (both necessities and my not-so-luxurious luxuries).
Having more than I normally earned was a good thing. It felt like a crown I'd wear, the extra 5-inches of height I don't actually have, just to feel "equal" to my husband who doesn't really earn as much, but can be dominant (to domineering sometimes). But it did not help me in some of the areas which had to be afloat. It felt like my marriage was slowly turning into a housemate/roommate kind of situation. I barely kept in touch with my family until my brother moved to Canada because I am always looking at my screens (in both jobs), I was barely sociable. Overall, I am always in the spirit of chasing something -- time? energy? Because I just don't have both all the time.
Until my last shift, August 25. The shift ended in an unpromising note. When my manager expressed her disappointment, I actually thought I'd still be back on Monday. But when Saturday the next day rolled around and checked on my emails the next morning, I was a little surprised that I was terminated. It was unexpected and expected at the same time, knowing how I think culturally they can be dismissive. But I did not take it against her. While it was very sad to start my day with a terrible news, it did not feel as bad as I thought it would be. My world did not end like I thought.
When the next Monday rolled in, I felt a great deal of relief that I was no longer chasing time. That I can finally take time and do my job as thorough as I wished and wanted because this is now the only one I keep -- teaching. When Tuesday came, an unexpected email was received: the deadline I thought I missed in the graduate school I was applying for was extended until the 30th of September; I can now also send it through courier. I felt grateful. I thought it was good. And then another email: the VA company asked me to reapply. So another "good" news, I thought.
However, this time, I felt iffy about applying again as a VA. Like my heart did not really want to but since my finances reminded me I can't afford to just have one job, I had no choice. So I did: took the test, sent my video entry and unlike the first time I applied, this time I now have an actual VA experience.
What's odd, on the other hand, was on the next day, I received an email from the company saying I did not pass. Which is really weird, considering how so much has changed between the time I applied in December of 2021 and now. It's not like my brain declined in function that I cannot actually pass the test. It's just impossible.
But it was when it finally dawned on me: the vision/plan is clear. I am not for that anymore. I am no longer for anything unrelated to the career I went to college for. A redirection. But I do not owe it to the "universe" or "forces of nature" or the "stars" or the "planets in retrograde" or whatever. I owe it all to God.
Since then, everyday felt even better. My work as a teacher is still exhausting as hell; my finances are still in shambles as of writing, but unlike before, I don't feel worried. As if my heart found peace that it is so calm while receiving payment reminders from the bank, my postpaid, our house utilities, and now, the fridge close to running empty.
And as if in perfect timing, my husband scored a series of projects we both had no idea he would. God indeed works in ways that will surprise you.
In the marriage I used to think was loveless, my husband, who barely lifted a finger in our first two years of marriage, now packs my lunch everyday with snacks and other good stuff. He wakes me up gently and patiently as if I'm a princess.
A lot of good things came out of my termination. And I cannot be grateful enough. I owe God the peace I have in my heart, the love I feel from my husband, the time I now enjoy, the lifestyle I now keep and the lessons learned from the experience.
I may have lost my job to a point of feeling stuck at my own needs, but the direction I am now heading is clearer than ever. To God be the glory forever.
