Okay what k-drama should I watch next?

Ouu, that’s a big ask 😅 if you have Viki, Lovely Runner is an incredible one where you have to keep asking yourself how two people can love each other so much and keep trying to do more and more to save each other. In a similar vein, Twinkling Watermelon is so filled with love of family and friends and music and youth, it’ll leave you with a warm glow in your chest (this show is also basically all I post about lol). (Also, Songbird has watched and can vouch for both of these.)

But if you only have Netflix right now… Queen of Tears has a similar feeling to CLOY (same writer), even if it’s not quite as good as it, but it does that same thing where it sets up this expectation for where it’s going but that you don’t expect that to actually happen because then the story would end, right? (Like Se-ri getting back home with like 6 episodes left.) But then it does happen, and it goes beyond your expectations and blows your mind. The last few episodes do get pretty convoluted, but the feelings. The feelings are real. Also, this writer has to be the queen of second couples, because the second couple in this show is just as brainrot-inducing as Seungdan.

Or for something less intense but still extremely satisfying, Our Beloved Summer? It’s been called the closest thing to a modern-day Persuasion (even though it isn’t an actual adaptation), it’s slow and gentle and a little heartbreaking but also so healing. The leads are just… such darlings.

Also… this one might be a “bookmark for later,” because it’s not on any major streaming service right now (they took it off of Netflix), but Live Up To Your Name (2017) is SOOOO! One of the best romances I have ever seen, between two people with the same profession but completely different life experiences that have shaped their worldview and goals, and how they learn to meet in the middle and see and understand each other and save each other!!! My gosh. It’s also the perfect balance between heartbreaking and hysterical.

I need n e e d to ramble about Eph’s family again because it’s the only thing keeping me from ripping a door off of its hinges atm—but wait! I’m doing something different today. I’m gonna go backwards in the family tree (which you can view here if you wish! But it’s not necessary for the purposes of this post)

So a lil while ago on twitter, @/kwoojii asked for Ephemera backstory headcanons (well specifically they also asked about his commitment issues 😄) so I figured why not share what I said and expand on it here?

I need to give additional context, because this goes into general edgy headcanon territory. Below are screenshots from one of my fic documents [Overmorrow Character and Lore Files - File 3 (pgs 2-3)] explaining what I imagine the situation in Daybreak Town is:

Now to get into the main part: My backstory headcanon for Ephemera is that he was raised by two moms. They owned a library, and even had a small textile business on the side. As you can probably guess, Eph grew up surrounded by books, and got his scarf from them. They loved him dearly, and tried their best to give him a good life.

But they fell on hard times. In the midsts of their struggles, they were eventually approached by the MoM. They talked a lot and came around to trust the clever, charismatic, even sympathetic guy. And he made them a promise that their son would be well cared for under his watch 👁️ So, convinced by the MoM’s words…these mothers choose to give up their only child in hopes that he’ll have a better quality of life elsewhere.

Eph has very vague memories of them. He remembers being loved, but he also remembers being abandoned and left alone for a long time (however long it takes for the MoM to get things set up in Daybreak Town; I assume the kids are kept in some liminal space in the meantime).….hence the commitment issues. He learns to figure things out on his own, and that carries over into his early days as a keyblade wielder. He likes being with people, but he relies on himself first and foremost. He tends to keep a bit of emotional distance between himself and others without meaning to because he subconsciously thinks that one day, they might leave him too. It’s easier to be the one who leaves than it is to be the one who gets left behind.

But this makes his bond with the other union leaders and Player all the more meaningful, because they all choose to stand together again and again, despite the odds, and their own personal doubts and fears.

It’s a bit of a downer, I know…but I assume it’d be like that not just for Eph and his parents, but for most of the other Daybreak kids and their parents too.

Being Rena Rouge is the best thing Alya can do to help her superhero friends, but the problem arises when she’s needed and Ladybug can’t get away long enough to bring her the Miraculous of illusions. And darn it Marinette actually knows how to hide things! Alya needs to be out there, but she also needs to have superpowers to do so.

Oh, I remember like it was yesterday! Season 2 of the Ladybug show was starting to be released and our little fan community had come up with the idea of Chat Noir becoming akumatized—“Chat Blanc” we called him! Such a delightful idea! I wonder if the creators of the show ever learned about him…

Genuinely, where are ML people congregating these days. None of the Discord servers I'm in are super active anymore and I barely see people in them posting about new episodes/specials and definitely not as they're airing. Where is the new episode camaraderie

There used to be so many active Discord servers and groups on Tumblr/Instagram who talked about where to find links for whatever was coming out and livestreamed episodes themselves and went crazy while watching them all together and I can't tell if this is something that has gone by the wayside fandom-wide or if I am a loser who just isn't invited to be part of these things

Oscar was too warm and tired for this. He stood in front of a camera, smelling like hairspray and some sort of spray the makeup artist had put on his face, while he was asked all of the ‘Grill the Grid’ questions. 

“That’s it for ‘Grill the Grid’,” she explained. “But this year we have a new segment.”

“Oh yeah?” he questioned, his interest piqued. 

“Yeah, it’s called ‘Anything but F1’,” she smiled. “Your topic is Y/n Y/l/n’s career,” she chuckled. 

Oscar smiled. “This is going to be easy.”

“Will she kill you if you don’t get full marks?” she laughed. 

Oscar pondered. “Probably not?” 

“Alright then. Ready? Pressure is on.”

He nodded. 

“What was Y/l/n’s first role on Broadway?” 

“Matilda,” he nodded. Y/n Y/l/n, his girlfriend, you, also an EGOT winning actor, the youngest there’s ever been. 

“Correct! How old was Y/l/n when she made her Broadway debut?”

“Well, she was 8 in Matilda on the West End and did 2 years of that, so 10?” he answered. 

“Correct! How old was she when she played Sally Bowles, making her the youngest to have ever played her on a Broadway stage?” 

“She was 17.”

“Correct! How old was she when she got her first Tony?” 

“11 years old.”

“Correct!” she smiled. “What Disney princess did she play?” 

“Huh?” he questioned, not knowing that you’d voiced a disney princess. “She’s voiced a Disney princess?” 

She nodded. 

“In a Disney film?”

She nodded again. “Think about it.”

“Does she sing in it?”

“The princess does sing,” she explained. “But Y/l/n did also write a song for it.”

Oscar was stumped. “Can I come back to it?” 

“Sure,” she shrugged, moving on to the next one. “What was her first feature film?”

“Lés Mis,” he answered. “She played Cosette.”

“Correct! What happened at the 2013 oscars?”

Oscar chuckled. “I think Jennifer Lawrence fell over and took Y/n with her?”

“Correct! What is her most streamed song?”

“Does this include recordings she was a part of or just her solo career or the band too?”

“One of those is fine, but if you can give me an answer for all though, we’ll give you an extra point.”

“So,” he started explaining. “Y/n’s most streamed solo single is probably American Teenager, her most streamed band single is probably BABY SAID, and her most streamed cast recording was probably Wicked, or Hadestown.”

“Correct, and it is Wicked.”

As he explained his answers, his trainer and others in the room started to laugh. He knew everything about you. He was so down-bad it was almost embarrassing, but they understood it anyway. You’d been together since you were 14, you were 23 now. You get to know a lot about a person in 9 years, especially from teenage years to being a young adult. 

“What record did she break by winning an Oscar in 2018?” 

Oscar smirked and winked at the camera. “She’s the youngest person ever to gain an EGOT.”

“What school did she teach at in her early years?”

Oscar raised an eyebrow. “How old was she?”

“Ages 8-12, she taught here on and off, and not many people know about it since she didn’t go into that field of the arts.”

He groaned, trying desperately to think. “The Royal Ballet in London!” He exclaimed, finally remembering. 

“Correct! Next question, how many Tony awards does she have?”

“Oh shit they’re on the mantel at home…” he muttered to himself, trying to count them in his head. “5?”

“Correct. Who has more trophies?”

Oscar chuckled. “I have more trophies, but she has more awards.”

“Alright, how many Emmys does she have?”

“1, which she won this year for her role in the Bear.” 

“Correct, how many Broadway or West End shows has she been a part of? You get a bonus point for naming them all.”

“Oh alright, so Matilda, Annie, Into the Woods, Hamilton, Heathers, Spring Awakening, Mamma Mia!, Moulin Rouge!, Cabaret, Six, Parade, Hadestown, Chicago, Wicked, and right now she’s doing Lés Miserables for the first time on a stage,” he explained. “So that was… 15?”

“Just one more?” she hinted. 

Oscar’s face fell. “What? What else has she done?” he asked out loud. “I said Wicked?”

She nodded. 

“Did I say Mamma Mia!?” 

She nodded. 

“Did I say Phantom of the Opera?”

“No, you didn't! Congratulations, bonus point awarded. What has she said is her dream role?”

He took a deep breath. “It’s going to be really bad if I get this wrong, isn’t it? Alright, so, she has always wanted to play Ms. Honey in Matilda,” he watched as the interviewer shook her head. “Shit, alright. Any hints?”

“She said it would be the only way to get her back into a specific show,” she hinted. 

“Oh! Emcee!” he cheered. “God, how could I forget that?”

“Well done! Alright, one final question, what song did she sing at the 2023 grammy awards, where she debuted her first single after ‘LISTEN’, her band, went on hiatus?”

He smirked. He was there for that performance. He was sitting in the crowd as you sang. He got to take you home and congratulate you. He got to be the proud boyfriend all night. He loved it. It was one of his most fond memories. “She sang ‘That’s So True’. I was there.”

“The infamous kiss picture,” she winked at him. He nodded, a smug smile on his face. “So, going back to the other question, what Disney princess did Y/l/n play?” 

“Oh shit yeah, it was animated, yeah?”  

“Not necessarily,” she hinted. 

“Ariel!” he exclaimed. “Ariel, of course!”

She chuckled. “Congratulations, you know the most about Y/n Y/l/n’s career out of anyone I’ve ever met.”

“One would hope,” he chuckled.

Okay like. How did nobody every tell me the there is a BARRIER around the Eiffel Tower you can’t just walk up to it/under…. LIKE. According to my googling there’s been. But like. WHERE ARE THE CRACK FICS? The “we agreed to meet at the Eiffel Tower after defeating hawkmoth but shit now our kwamis have gone dormant so we need to get in the old fashioned way. CRAP the ticket time I need was sold out on the website. Fuck they won’t me in because i forgot about the blow torch in my emergency grab bag and I couldn’t make it past security.  Alya opened her eyes to stare again at her bedroom ceiling. She should be asleep already. She had been exhausted when they broke, but the moment she touched her bed she was suddenly wide awake.

 Alya wanted to blame it on Trixx and nocturnality, but even the fox Kwami was asleep by now. There were no noises coming from any of the other rooms, not even the muted ones of Chloe writing another debate or press conference outline, or Marinette and Tikki moving around to grab supplies for a midnight design mock up, and definitely no talking from the living room.

 She was alone in consciousness for the time being.

 After a couple more minutes of fruitlessly trying to sleep, Alya quietly rolled out of bed and moved to her door. Maybe a snack would help.

 She snuck down the hall, past Marinette’s closed door and towards the living room. Adrien may be the only one able to claim being as quiet as a cat, but foxes were could be quiet too. It's useless to scream in wait, but silence will draw prey in.

 Maybe having a Miraculous had gotten her to do more in depth research on animals and symbolism. Oh well. It was good information!

 There were no noises other than her own soft footsteps as she went, and it was both calming and alarming. In her head Alya knew it was normal, but some nights just felt laced with an energy that was out of place. Maybe it was because the five of them rarely sat in silence. It was a better use of time to converse.

 Nino and Adrien were both asleep in their separate bedding cocoons (Nino didn't like it being called his shell, and Adrien just tossed out a pun before enjoying having one, not really caring about the name) on the living room floor, but Alya still made it to the kitchen without anyone the wiser.

 When she thought about it, it would be nice to talk to someone since she was awake anyways, but after living for her entire life with siblings, and then moving in with Marinette, and Chloe joining them later, even deceptive solitude like this was a bit of a thrill.

 Alya opened the fridge and dug out an apple, then made her way back to her bedroom.

 Not that it wasn't nice, but it was a little surreal for the usually loud and chaotic apartment to be so peaceful, especially at this hour.

 That thought had just finished making itself known in Alya’s head when her phone lit up and started vibrating, a loud ringing following close behind. Four similar sounds responded from the other rooms in the apartment, alertunh everyone to the situation.

 Akuma sighting at eleven at night. Ugh.

 A crash reverberated through the walls, followed by a shriek of “Tikki I’m up!” A scuffle, probably from the living room, came soon after. Alya turned to Trixx’s bed, finding purple eyes looking at her expectantly.

 “Let's make sure the others are ready first.”

 ��Strong, brave, and considerate,” Trixx complemented, as though this was a new trait.

15 Day BL Challenge! Part 2!

Day 30: Top 3 shows to introduce people to BL?

Picking just 3 BLs to use to introduce people to BL is tricky because the more time goes on, the more there is and trickier it becomes to narrow it down to just 3 however I am going to do my best. I will say that my taste heavily skews towards Thai BL and since I’ve only been watching since 2022 there is likely a recency bias as well but I did my best to come up with 3 good ones. Jury is still out on whether or not it is haha

So without further ado, in no particular order:

The New Employee (Korea, 2022)

So my first BL on this list is actually Korean but I really liked The New Employee, it’s short, cute and to the point. The relationship between the two mains is good and the friendship with the ML and his lesbian bestie will always be a highlight for me. Overall it’s surprisingly uncomplicated and I think that would be a good starter if one wants a lighter non Thai BL

Love By Chance (Thailand, 2018)

Mame is perhaps not where most would start and I do agree with that a point but I do make an exception for Love By Chance. It’s a more classic old school BL that I think holds up well enough again newer shows that are coming out. It’s a more foundational BL that I think is good to watch if you want to know the roots of the genre (and the roots of Mame :P). Plus baby Saint and baby Perth are adorable and are still recognizable names to this day.

Manner of Death (Thailand, 2020-2021)

Okay hear me out. I followed an oddly specific procedural to BL pipeline (it was the gay firefighters okay?) and if others are anything like me, Manner of Death would be a good introductory BL. The show managed to strike a somewhat good balance between the romance and crime storylines while also never underestimating the audience’s intelligence. The show knows when to put the romance on the back burner in order to move the plot forward and I think that would be good for people who are a little weary of diving headfirst into BLs especially if romance as a genre wasn’t something they spent a lot of time in before. Plus it’s MaxTul at their finest and who wouldn’t watch to watch them ;)

Bonus:

Until We Meet Again (Thailand, 2019-2020)

While I think it’s possiblity (definitely) the best BL ever made, I think it would be one of those shows you have to work up too. Not for a long time but it would likely be good to get a small introduction to the genre before watching as this show is steeped in classic BL tropes that you might need more familiarity with in order to understand exactly how well the show does them and why that matters.
