Ahhh my gosh yes!!!! If I’m gonna be honest D’Vorah is my least favorite character of all Mortal Kombat characters, but that doesn’t mean I dislike her. Actually she’s pretty fucking epic and a cool character to write about. Tbh I’m really REALLY happy with this request since I’m also the type who simps over characters who aren’t popular enough to get a lot of fanfics about them if any XD

I feel like D’Vorah wouldn’t be very good at showing expression. Bugs don’t mate for life save for cockroaches and termites, and so her need to stay with you feels more like a need the way food is a need, rather than as love. But of course that’s just the way her bug mind interprets it because whenever a bug bite you and you had a bad reaction, her way expression love was by killing it

I think it’s safe to say you’d never had lice or ticks or anything again. Weird

Now imagine this in the old era before Mortal Kombat 1: Medusa!Reader manages to make her way into Kotal Khan’s court after being vouched for by Reptile. While Kotal Khan is, understandably, suspicious of the woman that used to work for Shang Tsung (but unaware you were anything more than a trophy wife) you showed no prominent desire or allegiance to Mileena or the deceased Shao Khan. Although, you did win his favor by dutifully serving Kotal alongside Reptile, whom you’ve seen to grow deeply attached to, and when you revealed D’Vorah to be a double agent for the Fallen Elder God Shinnok. Meanwhile, Reptile continued to court you the Saurian way and grew deeper and deeper in love with you. You who seemed so elegant, intelligent, faithful, and ruthless when need be. Reptile even went as far as to gift you a flower thought to be long extinct from Zattera, as a token of his undying devotion to you.

Yet, it was all a ruse. In reality, you were a snake in the garden disguised as a rose. You had your own agenda and priorities, which you kept under lock and key by acting submissive to those in power. You exposed D’Vorah because, while her allegiance to Shinnok meant the destruction of Outworld, you refused to let Quan-chi or any of his allies destroy it. No, Outworld will crumble and fall by your hands. Which is why you kept in contact with Mileena unbeknownst to Reptile and Kotal, and plotted with her.

Your plans came to fruition during a Ball Kotal held for all those in power and nobles of Outworld. You danced with Reptile seemingly smitten with the Saurian, to which everyone else looked at with contempt and disgust. Not you though, with your loving smile and how you kissed his cheek. Eventually, getting sick of the looks from everyone else, Reptile excused you and him to have a private moment on one of the palace’s balconies. There, Reptile popped the question and asked you to be his mate for life. You give an amused smile as you turned him down, stating that there’s no point as it wouldn’t be long anyways. This confused the Saurian we’d body suddenly seized up as if every nerve in his body turned to ice, thanks to the lipstick you laced with paralyzing Kytinn poison. You calmly stepped away from the growing puddle of acidic drool.

You admit to the last Saurian that while you are genuinely fond of him and appreciates his devotion, he’s really more of a pet to you. Shang Tsung on the other hand was more of your equal. You revealed to Reptile as he writhed from his circulatory system shutting down, that you weren’t just Shang Tsung’s wife but his partner. You reminisce how the late Sorcerer made life invigorating and sublime until Shao Khan took that all away from you. At that, you took the rare flower that Reptile gifted you, that you placed earlier on your head, and threw it to the ground and grind it beneath your heel. If you can’t make Dhao Khan pay, then you’ll make his legacy, Outworld, pay his debt. If Reptile could cry, he probably would. But you shushed the Saurian and cooed condescendingly that you won’t destroy him, as he’d make a most rare addition to your garden. So you turn him into stone while capturing his heartbroken expression. You giggle and give one last kiss to his snout before you walk away to watch the rest of your plan unfurled.

You smiled and hummed to yourself at the sound of screams and blood curdling howls as guests at the parties met their end from the Tarkatans you let in, after poisoning Kotal’s guards. You walked into the main room just in time to watch the carnage and mayhem, as one by one, nobles and generals alike were torn to shreds by the Tarkatans or choked on their own blood from making the mistake of drinking from the wine offered. At the center, was Kotal Khan fighting for his life, swinging his sword in large strokes against the hordes of Tarkatans who fall to his blade easily. It won’t be long now before Mileena descends on the Osh-tek to reclaim her throne. Putting you one step closer to your goal.

I’m pretty much a badass so it was expected that I was the one to defeat Kronika. There was one thing I wasn’t sure about. The hourglass.

Changing history would mean the relationships I’ve made along the way would be forgotten. And I would go back to being the evil bitch in the Black Dragon.

In the new timeline, I made it exactly how it should be. Liu Kang and Kung Lao heroes. Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, and the others casted away like they never existed.

Everything was supposed to be peaceful.

I started to feel a newfound boredom. Because there was no chaos and I made everything perfect, there was nothing. Absolutely nothing.

The people I’ve once cared about had no recollection of me and I didn’t know what to be. The only reason why I was one of the good guys was because of the people that were near and dear to my heart.

So I did what I do best, I played the bad guy.

And damn does it feel good to be the bad guy again.

Random MK worldbuilding headcanons

Souls always take the form of the body they are in (does not apply to objects) but soul damage will change the body over time.

The Takahashi’s psychic powers are genetic, but the gene became dormant after Sento left the clan’s hands.

The Kytinn (D’vorah’s race) and Kreeyans (Vorpax’s race) are from the same realm.

Shao Kahn and Onaga are the same race but different types.

The wraith is an experimental resurrection method. Bi Han was the first successful subject.

Seidans and Khaons (chaosrealmers in my au) mainly use rune magic.

Tarkatans are venomous.

Realms are divided by rifts. Rifts usually occur in hard to reach places (open water, mountains, caves, deserts, etc.). And under specific conditions (full moons, certain weather, seasons, etc.). Some are open whenever but it is very rare.

Mirco realms are small realms usually in orbit of a larger realm.

Shang Tsung’s island is located in a micro realm with a rift off the coast of Zhu Zin.

Zhu Zin is a walled coastal city. It is commonly known as “The City Stuck in Time” because it started to isolated itself from the rest of China after the Ming dynasty. Ironically it was once one of China’s biggest trading hubs.

Just a bit about MK's gender swap of Sektor and Cyrax

Unless there is a solid reason behind such a choice, I’m not a big fan of turning established characters into a different gender. Since Cyrax and Sektor’s gender has never played any vital part in their relationship with Bi-Han, Tomas or Kuai Liang, I can accept the gender swap for now, although my final judgment will depend on how those characters will be used in the upcoming expanded story.

That said, I have some legitimate concerns about those changes. For one, if this is NRS’s way to introduce more female fighters, then I’m pretty offended. I’m still awaiting the return of Sonya (one of the original cast!). There is also Sheeva, D’Vorah, Jade, Frost, Skarlet, Khameleon (already mentioned in intro dialogues as Umgadi), Sareena (as actual character not supporting background cameo), Jataaka, Kia. There is Harumi that definitely deserves to be flashed out beyond Scorpion’s fiance/wife, not to mention a chance to introduce us to a totally new female protagonist, like Raiden’s sister. Or NRS could bring comics!Hydro as a woman (or gender-fluid hydromancer. I’m not picky, though I doubt the NRS has any intention to explore gender issues beyond characters being women or men).

And let’s not forget about Cassie Cage & Jacqui Briggs, but those two as New Generation may not fit yet into the story, which is understandable. 

I’m happy to see Sektor and Cyrax back, but there are plenty of female characters that deserve no less to be brought back into lore and I’m afraid that gender swapping Cyrax and Sektor is NRS’s way to kill two birds with one stone. Bi-Han’s supporters are important to expand the Lin Kuei vs Shirai Ryu conflict, but by being now women, their presence on the roster reduces the chance of other female characters.  

The second, more prominent concern I have is the fear that the game will rely on or imply there was romance - still ongoing or in the past - between Bi-Han or Kuai Liang with either Sektor or Cyrax. I said it countless times before that I see Sub-Zero as aromantic & asexual so any romance for him simply doesn’t work for me, but that is actually beside the point.

My point is, if the major addition to the relationship between Lin Kuei characters will be Sektor and/or Cyrax having romantic feelings for any of the brothers and for that addition NRS needed to gender swap them into women I WILL BE FURIOUS. Not for the romance itself, but because Sektor and Cyrax as men could have the same feelings and their gender should not play any role in that. Homosexual and/or bisexual men should be part of MK lore no less than heterosexual characters. And I feel lately that the Mortal Kombat franchise likes to erase a lot of previously established diversity. Homosexual Kung Jin was playable only in MKX (2015) and just referred here or there since then. Previous timelines Mileena showed interest (or sometimes was just sexually creepy?) toward men and women alike, now she is only interested in Tanya. On one hand, cool, an established lesbian woman. On another the bisexual vibe is kicked out of the window - or at least this is my impression. Johnny may be seen as bisexual man, but how intentional that was on the NRS’ part or just came out naturally as there is no female character in the group of Liu Kang’s Earthrealm Champions for him to interact with, I’m not sure. 

My fear is that NRS is just a coward that would rather gender-swap male characters to present them and their relationship as heterosexual than just go with them as they are. MK1 has already the token homosexual pair (Tanya & Mileena) to balance Liu Kang/Kitana,  Sindel/Jerrod and background Johnny’s ex-marriage or Kenshi/Suchin. So if female Cyrax and Sektor’s purpose is to either avoid homosexual implication or to explore the relationship of  Lin Kuei characters through some romantic bullshit, I will be furious. But if studio’s choice to gender swap Sektor and Cyrax will change literally nothing about what we already knew from previous timelines then WHAT WAS THE POINT OF ALL OF THIS?

Like I said, my final judgment about NRS’s choice for female Cyrax and Sektor will be based on story mode alone. For now, I’m pretty much indifferent, as their gender has never affected their relationship with Bi-Han before and so far the only complaint I have is, the visually-wise impression that female Cyrax and Sektor seem to look thinner than rest of female characters? But that may be just the armor playing a trick on my eyes.

(I lied. I have a second complaint, their armor should be more bulky, and better covering their body/gender. This seems like a wasted opportunity to have a cool reveal that yes, under the armor there are two kick-ass awesome women).

So, female Cyrax and Sektor for now does not change anything for me, but I do remain suspicious about the reasoning of NRS for gender swap.

So, I’ve reached the point in Mortal Kombat 1 story mode where they reveal some pretty interesting stuff that’s got me thinking. Obviously, I’ll be mentioning spoilers here so watch out.

Apparently Liu Kang’s victory is not the only one whose victory in Aftermath was canonical. It’s revealed that the timeline split into a version where Liu Kang won and one where Shang Tsung won, and Shang Tsung created his own New Era complete with Dark Raiden and other evil versions of kharacters.

But then! It’s also revealed that everyone’s victory was its own separate timeline in which they became Time Titans and crafted their own new universes. It only shows a few of the others from MK11 joining Liu Kang to fight the old Shang Tsung, but theoretically, there should be a new timeline headed by each fighter in MK11. The base game had 25 kombatants, but there were also 12 more DLCs that may have also had their own timelines.

Which makes me wonder if there’s, like, a timeline created by, frickin’, the Joker or Jason Voorheese. Imagine an MK universe shaped by Spawn, the Terminator, or Rambo.

And, obviously, you have interesting possibilities with the other actual MK fighters like D’Vorah (bug universe!), Nightwolf (no manifest destiny!), or Erron Black (way more manifest destiny!). The possibilities for NRS to exploit this for more games is vast, but the fanfic ideas are nigh endless, tbh.

Half of the 16 kameo slots have been revealed (Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Jax, Sonya, Kano, Goro, Stryker, Kung Lao). All 8 of these characters are from the original MK trilogy, so I’m going to assume that all of them are going to be nostalgia choices.

So here’s my predictions for the other kameo kandidates

I am so excited for the new Mortal Kombat! The trailer was so good. And it’s always nice to see Scorpion and Sub Zero put aside their differences and team up.

Question for fans, does anyone else really hope they bring back D’Vorah? I know she is somewhat unpopular with many of the MK fandom, but I love her whole insect aesthetic and how she’s portrayed as being so ruthless. She’s been one of the standout new characters for me!

D'Vorah

[ This is my canon divergent version of D'Vorah from Mortal Kombat! I’ve only played Mortal Kombat 11, so that is the only MK story / lore / events that I know. ]

D'Vorah is a nonbinary Kytinn. They use any pronouns, as gender is irrelevant to them. They’re fascinated with human culture and have quite a sweet tooth. They may seem like a big scary bug, but they’re quite friendly and curious! They’re usually wearing a more comfy and casual version of their usual black hood.

They are not super similar to canon D’Vorah, and they know that they have an alternate counterpart that everyone else is used to, but they have not met her and know little about her. They do care for the survival of their species, as they are going extinct, but this D’Vorah has a stronger moral code and is not willing to harm others for her own species propagation.

She hasn’t met the other fighters in the Mortal Kombat universe yet, but she has been learning about them through legend and word of mouth.
