Maybe it was naive, but Oscar always kind of felt like he and Lando were inevitable. Like their differences smoothed each other out, allowed them to slot together like puzzle pieces. But that isn’t quite right, and it takes Carlos for him to see it.

The way Lando looks at Carlos is different. They’re not teammates anymore, so it took Oscar a little time to see it but. Lando reaches out to Carlos, watches him in a way that he doesn’t with Oscar. The soft smiles he directs Oscar’s way fade as soon as the cameras turn off and the eyes turn away.

When Oscar falls for Charles— it’s not inevitable, it’s not destined, it just feels right. He doesn’t know him like he knew Lando, didn’t spend his time growing up following his career. He knew about him of course, and there’s a degree of stardom to Charles that feels brighter with his gaze on Oscar. But he’s not on so much of a pedestal, to Oscar.

So Oscar nudges the door open with his tweet, a quick reference to his lineage. Still, Charles’ response is a bit of a surprise. They don’t know each other well enough for inside jokes, but here Charles meets him halfway, pushes the door open a little farther.

Their relationship develops slowly, not quite friends yet, and Oscar finds himself grateful for the additional topic, something to tie them together. Things are awkward, at times, but real in a way that’s refreshing. It tugs at Oscar’s chest, urges him to comment on Charles’ races— tap his back as he passes. Unsurety tinges their interactions, and curiosity leads their gazes. It’s a push and pull between them, devastatingly human.
