In the final moments of 2024 my best friend and I went on a California roadtrip. We hit the mesquite sand dunes in Death Valley, and of course I had to bring my Minolta point and shoot along. Shot on Portra 400 (my favorite film for capturing the rich saturations of nature), I’ve never had so many happy accidents in one roll lol. Sun exposure, jammed film, double exposures, the whole nine. While these photos aren’t perfectly untouched anymore, they somehow capture the feelings of adventure and joy better.

Empty Spaces
For this week’s Lens-Artists Photography Challenge, Patti invites us to explore empty spaces in our photography. Empty spaces can draw more attention to our subject, as it does in this wildflower photo. Empty spaces draw attention to your subject. In wildlife photography, leaving a lot of empty space in front of your subject gives them room to move. Empty space gives this meadowlark plenty of…

Fresh Ideas for Travel in Death Valley National Park
flickr
Fresh Ideas for Travel in Death Valley National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the northeast while taking in views across dune ridges to more distant ridges and peaks of the Amargosa Range. This is in Death Valley National Park at the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes. With this image, I decided to use the formations to my front and the way the dune ridge curved around with the creosote bushes on one side, and then sand on the other. I liked how the mountains were a contrast in both colors, as well as setting, to the sands around me.
