What is the 38 in mcl38 for? Ollie Bearman?? Sorry, I'm lost. This might be stupidly obvious,,,

hi!! no worries, ik its confusing - mcl38 is just the name of the 2024 chassis for mclaren. aside from last year (where i couldn't predict the special anniversary name mcl60 - named 60 bc we've been racing for 60 years) my blog name has been the name of the chassis: i had mcl35, then mcl35m (m stood for mercedes, bc they changed engine), then mcl36, then an unused mcl37, and now mcl38!

if ur curious, this is an interesting article about numbering the mclaren cars. tldr the mclarens used to be called M[number] until like i think M30 in 1980, bc in 1981 the car names changed to MP4 (stood for mclaren project 4). so then the count began again with MP4/1 MP4/2 etc until 2017 when we went from MP4/31 to MCL32 for simplicity's sake. and it's continued on like that up to present day, hence mcl38:)

Since 2017, McLaren have used ‘MCL’ as their system for naming cars – eschewing the previous ‘MP4’ convention that began in 1981. 2017 saw the MCL32 launched, before 2018 gave us the MCL33 and so on until last year's MCL36.
