For the ask game 6,8 and 25
6. which ship fans are the most annoying? uh. No offense intended whatsoever, but I simply do not vibe with Grahamscott (the gay one). I mean, I guess I see the appeal? But it just kinda rubs me the wrong way a little. I think it's cuz it's a very popular (I might even call it overrated) mlm ship in a very wlw-oriented game and fandom. It's like, there's 5 times more mlm on AO3 as opposed to wlw last I checked. Not that there's anything inherently wrong with mlm; it's just not for me, and it's something that gets hyped up a LOT in fandom spaces, often to the detriment of wlw, het, and other ships.
Anyway. Very popular ship for what I would go so far as to call a crack pairing. (The inherent homoeroticism of, uh... beating a guy up so hard he has to go to the hospital?) Want proof? Here are the most popular relationships (platonic inclusive) in the Life Is Strange fandom on AO3 as of the time of writing:
There are more Grahamscott fics than there are Marshfield fics (admittedly not by a lot), and that's a travesty.
FANDOM-WIDE CHALLENGE: Write >17 Marshfield fics so we can knock Grahamscott out of 4th place!
I reiterate: I do not hate Grahamscott, nor do I hate those who ship them. It's got a lot of (non-uwu softboy, mind you) potential. It simply isn't for me.
8. common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about Bae or Bay Before the Storm is not a bad game. Actually no wait I'll save that one for 25.
Hm.
How bout this: William was NOT a perfect dad. He was a good one, for sure, but remember: our idea of his character is rose-tinted with Chloe's and Max's overwhelmingly positive memories of him. "That's one thing he left us: wonderful memories." (I paraphrase) I'd like to see his flaws explored a bit more.
25. common fandom complaint that you're sick of hearing I've said it already and I'll say it again: Before the Storm is not a bad game. It's not a great game, and it definitely doesn't live up to the original, but it's a good game.
High points of the game (keep in mind I haven't watched/played the game in about 4 years):
Steph
Interesting take on a young Nathan
CUNSn
The SMASH scene (brought me close to tears. The controllable helplessness of it all, God)
Steph and Mikey
Skip
EN FUEGO UTERO
I LOVE what they did with Samuel actually
The take on Rachel was really interesting, especially the whole backstory thing and the actress mindset
FIRE POWERS FIRE POWERS
I'm intrigued by the drawing of an older Max hanging from a noose in a tree in Chloe's journal. WHAT does that IMPLY, WHAT does that MEAN
Steph
Barb the Barbarian (I named one of my DnD characters that and made her a She-Ra expy)
Chloe's dream sequences and general sleepiness (reminiscent of depression)
PUTTING AN ENTIRE CAR BATTERY INTO HER PANTS POCKET
The snitch straight-up admitting to Damon that he snitched was not at all realistic but it was very funny
The play scene, especially if you get all the lines right
Victoria drinking the drugged tea
Farewell, especially the little choose-your-own squirrel story ^w^
Low points:
"tHe StArS aRe DeAd" THAT IS NOT ASTRONOMICALLY CORRECT (I have ranted about this before)
Damon. Everything about Damon. His character, his impact on the plot, everything.
The whole James and Sera backstory was really hackneyed
I am ambivalent about the Backtalk mechanic
The whole third episode was just such a letdown. So much wasted potential
Much like LIS, there are a lot of different subplots, but LIS wove them together well while BTS didn't.
I've reblogged a rant about this before, but Chloe has so very little agency while Max has loads of it! Admittedly, the game is a prequel so some things have to happen no matter what, and Chloe's lack of agency (and unwillingness to acquire it) is a big point of her character, but it does not make for a fun video game protagonist. There are way too many But Thou Must! moments in the story.
The friggin' end scene with Frank fighting off Damon
do NOT retcon that Pompidou was a gift from Damon. do NOT
I'm also ambivalent on the whole Max and Chloe text exchanges retcon. Like, I think Chloe miiiight have reached out to her, but Max would not have responded. The anxiety is simply Too Great.
I am also ambivalent about the Sam & Nathan thing. I wish she'd gotten more characterization than just "sweet kind girl who loves books".
Megan Weaver didn't show up. I wish she had, cuz she was evidently important to Chloe for at least a little while, and we know so little about her
I know there was a strike going on or something but I am sad we didn't have the original VAs :( (but they came back for Farewell, so rejoice!)
Chloe's VA's performance was kinda lackluster
Okay THAT got longer than I anticipated. Sorry. Anyway. There are a lot of good points to BTS. There are a lot of bad ones, too. But hey. Canon is a construct.
#ask#lis#life is strange#long post#lis bts#before the storm#grahamscott#marshfield#MARSHFIELD CALL TO ACTION#william price#sorry I ended up spending a lot more time on this ask than I anticipated#and thank you so much for being interested enough in my opinion to ask for it! :3

What are you thoughts on Marshfield?
I think that there's one factor that makes this pairing believable and one factor which makes this pairing unbelievable.
The factor making it believable is that Max is the only person in the whole wide world that cared about Kate when she needed care and support the most. The fact that Kate's mother and aunt not only didn't support her, but actually made her burden much harder by accusing her of wrongdoing (when she was clearly a victim of something horrible) is well known, but I think Kate's friends and the rest of her family should be ashamed of their actions (or inaction) too.
By the time Kate tries to commit suicide, Max has only known her for little more than a month (the game takes place in October, school year almost always starts in September, Max just moved into town to attend Blackwell for her senior year). We know she and Kate had weekly tea parties, but given the short period of time they've known each other they couldn't have had more than a few of those.
Kate does have long-term friends - Stella and Alyssa. They've probably known each other for three years at that point, if not more. Max can find a photo of them with Kate in Kate's room. But they are nowhere to be found during Kate's crisis. Max even comments the find with "I didn't know they were friends", suggesting that as soon as the video started circulating, Stella and Alyssa began avoiding Kate. So Max, who didn't attend Blackwell in the preceding years, didn't even know they were supposed to be Kate’s friends. Max, the new friend, did everything in her power to help. Kate's so called long-term "friends" did nothing.
And Kate's father is a sorry excuse for a parent and for a man.
The video Victoria posted online shows Kate taking a few sips of a drink and immediately starting to behave erratically, before being removed from the party by Nathan. To any rational observer that was a date rape in progress. The victim was roofied and then the perpetrator removed her from the party under the guise of "taking her home".
Kate's father should have immediately removed her from Blackwell and brought her home, because she clearly was at risk of the worst things possible happening to her over there. And then he should have gone to the cops and sought justice for his daughter.
Instead, he sent Kate a letter saying that he forgives her and that he will always love her, no matter what. Forgive her what? Falling victim to a horrible crime? Kate's father's letter strikes me as something not motivated by genuine care for her, but as sanctimonious, phoney, self-serving, holier-than-thou virtue signalling. “Look at me, I forgave my wayward daughter”. The only result it could have had was making Kate feel guilty. And it did precisely that. When Max brings up Kate's father while trying to talk her down from the roof, Kate says that her poor father loves her, even though she disappoints him so much. WTF? He was disappointed in her because she fell victim to a hideous crime? It's clear that her father's "forgiveness" only increased Kate's burden, not lessened it.
In what world does it make sense for a father to learn that his daughter was most likely date raped and to send her an "I forgive you" letter, while doing nothing to protect her or to seek justice for her? And if Kate's parents don't know what roofies or date rape are, then they are clearly not qualified to prepare three daughters for the dangers they might face in the world.
So given the abysmal treatment of Kate by everyone in her family and friend group, with the sole exception of Max, I can easily imagine her developing very strong feelings for Max, her saviour.
But the thing that makes Marshfield not believable are Kate's religious beliefs. Now, Christians do not necessarily hold homophobic beliefs. There are some Christian denominations that even bless same-sex marriages. However, it seems to me that Kate's family belongs to one of the more conservative Christian denominations, which frown upon, if not outright condemn, same-sex pairings. At the roof, Kate clearly has a crisis of faith. She says that God didn't protect her from the horrible abuse she suffered. If that crisis of faith continued even after Max talked her down, she could possibly re-evaluate her beliefs. That could also mean re-evaluating or outright rejecting the belief that a girl romantically pursuing another girl is somehow inherently wrong.
But when Max visits Kate in the hospital, it's clear that her crisis of faith is no more. During her conversation with Max, Kate quite clearly says that she now believes just as strongly as before. That doesn't mean she couldn't re-evaluate her beliefs on homosexual relationships. We don't even know if she had a negative opinion on relationships like that in the first place. But assuming she did, her quick comeback to her previously held beliefs makes any change in that regard less likely.

There will be nine new faces when the legislature resumes sitting on Prince Edward Island in the coming months, all from the governing party. The 22 Progressive Conservative seats include those nine first-time MLAs and all 13 incumbents. Three Liberals and two Green Party members also held their seats.
Below are the 27 elected representatives who will make up the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island. The majority increased from 15 seats to 22. Six came at the expense of the Green Party, and one was flipped from Liberal hands. Two other newcomers won seats held by former PC MLAs who did not re-offer.
Rob Lantz, a former leader of the Progressive Conservatives, won District 13: Charlottetown-Brighton. The seat was formerly held by Green MLA Ole Hammarlund, who lost his party's nomination to Janice Harper. A win is a form of redemption for Lantz, who lost the district in 2015 to Liberal Jordan Brown and spent eight years out of politics. He got a warm welcome back in King's victory speech Monday night.
Susie Dillon turned District 11: Charlottetown-Belvedere from green to blue. The seat was formerly held by the Greens' Hannah Bell, who did not re-offer. Joanna Morrison, who won the nomination in Bell's place, finished second.
Barb Ramsay took District 22 (Summerside-South Drive) from incumbent Green MLA Steve Howard. Tyler DesRoches, a former Summerside councilor, took District 21: Summerside-Wilmot from incumbent Green MLA Lynne Lund.
Jenn Redmond, who won the PC nomination by just one vote, was in another nail-biter Monday, winning District 5: Mermaid-Stratford by just 38 votes. Michele Beaton, the incumbent and a vocal MLA for the Greens, finished second.
Hilton MacLennan, who manages the O'Leary Co-op Feed Mill and Retail Store, took District 23: Tyne Valley-Sherbrooke from incumbent Green MLA Trish Altass.
Gilles Arsenault won in District 24: Evangeline-Miscouche, a seat formerly held by longtime Liberal MLA and interim party leader Sonny Gallant, who did not re-offer MacLellan, the Liberal candidate, and finished second.
Robin Croucher won in District 1: Souris-Elmira with 1,593 votes, keeping the seat for PCs LaVie, the MLA for the last 11 years, who made a late decision not to run again due to health reasons.
Jill Burridge kept District 6, Stratford-Keppoch, for the PCs with 1,479 votes. The seat was formerly held by James Aylward, who did not re-offer King the seat but handily won in District 15: Brackley-Hunter River) with more than 68 percent of the vote.
Bloyce Thompson, a farmer who was the minister of economic growth, tourism, and culture, won in District 8: Stanhope-Marshfield with the highest percentage of votes in any district this time - almost 80 percent of the vote. He faced only one challenger, Marian White of the NDP.
Matthew MacKay won in District 20 (Kensington-Malpeque in 2019) with a margin of 76 percent. MacKay held the high-profile social development and housing portfolio and was called upon to find temporary housing for Islanders facing homelessness.
Ernie Hudson won in District 26: Alberton-Bloomfield over Pat Murphy, a Liberal MLA from 2007-2019. Hudson was the King's minister of health and wellness at a time when many Islanders cited health care as the island's most pressing issue.
Steven Myers, most recently the minister of environment, energy, and climate action, won his fourth election in District 2: Georgetown-Pownal with almost 70 percent of the vote.
Darlene Compton, King's deputy premier and minister of agriculture and land, won in District 4: Belfast-Murray River with 1,510 votes, almost three times as many as her nearest competitor, Liberal candidate Katherine Bryson.
Cory Deagle, 31, retains his title as the youngest MLA, winning District 3: Montague-Kilmuir with more than 70 percent of the vote before dissolution was won for the PCs in a byelection in 2020, and cruising to victory in District 10: Charlottetown-Winsloe with more than 60 percent of the vote.
Sidney MacEwen, government house leader before the election call, had a convincing win in District 7, Morell-Donagh, with more than 70 percent of the vote.
Jamie Fox, the most recent minister of fisheries and communities, won his third election in District 19: Borden-Kinkora, well ahead of Matthew MacFarlane of the Green Party.
Jamie Fox, the most recent minister of fisheries and communities, won his third election in District 19: Borden-Kinkora, well ahead of Matthew MacFarlane of the Green Party.
Mark McLane, who was King's most recent finance minister, was re-elected in District 16: Cornwall-Meadowbank. McLane took the seat from the Liberals in a 2021 byelection after Heath MacDonald resigned to run federally. Green candidate Tayte Willows finished second on Monday.
Mark McLane, who was King's most recent finance minister, was re-elected in District 16: Cornwall-Meadowbank took the seat from the Liberals in a 2021 byelection after Heath MacDonald resigned to run federally and finished second on Monday.
The Liberals will form the official opposition, winning the second-largest number of seats, though their leader Sharon Cameron did not secure a seat herself McNeilly returns as the only person of color in the legislature, keeping his seat in District 14; Charlottetown-West Royalty candidate Kristi MacKay came in a close second.
Robert Henderson won his fifth election, taking District 25: O'Leary-Inverness in a three-way race with Daniel MacDonald of the PCs and Herb Dickieson of the NDP.
Hal Perry, who was first elected as a Progressive Conservative in 2011 before crossing the floor to the then-governing Liberals in 2013, was re-elected in District 27: Tignish-Palmer Road.
Leader Peter Bevan-Baker kept his seat in District 17: New Haven-Rocky Point, but just barely. PC Donald Docherty gave him a scare by finishing just over 100 votes behind. Liberal Leader Sharon Cameron finished a distant third.
Karla Bernard, the former opposition critic for social development, housing, and the status of women, kept her seat in District 12; Charlottetown Victoria Park Keizer, a longtime Charlottetown police constable, was a close second.

September 1936: A Busy Month
Sept. 1, 1936: Couples of fans’ dreams
Will super-masculine Clark Gable marry super-feminine Mae West?
Probably not, but you’d be surprised how many movie fans think it would be a swell idea.
Kibitzing the motion picture marriage market is apparently the favorite indoor sport of t those who take film players seriously enough to write letters to and about them. Several hundred during the past month have urged Mae to flee altar-ward with the virile Gable, and vice versa….
Fans are often ignorant of actors’ currently marital ties or blithely disregard them.
William Powell’s followers apparently won’t rest until he marries Jean Harlow, Mary Brian, Elizabeth Allan, Madge Evans, Steffi Duna, Joan Blondell, Tallulah Bankhead, or his ex-wife, Carole Lombard.
Sept. 1, 1936, retrieved from The San Bernadino County
Sept. 2, 1936: Honest Romance
The studios themselves serve as matchmakers for prominent young players and are quick to take advantage of the romances that spring up voluntarily.
Jean Harlow and William Powell might have been teamed in “Libeled Lady” even if they were not so much interested in each other off the screen. But with the situation as it is, the picture is expected to have double appeal for the fans.
Take Robert Taylor and Barbara Stanwyck! There’s a perfectly honest romance which was promptly capitalized on by casting the two in “His Brother’s Wife.”
And Clark Gable and Carole Lombard: There’s no question about their mutual enchantment being of spontaneous origin, because they’re under contract to different studios.
The strategists of each movie company exercise every precaution to promote and nurture romances between stars of their own constellations so that they can be put together in pictures and that publicity may not be shared with rival concerns.

Sept. 6, 1936 – The Daily Oklahoman
In addition, myriad rumors are linking in expected matrimony the names of Clark Gable and Carole Lombard, Robert Taylor-Barbara Stanwyck, Jean Harlow-William Powell, Loretta Young-Eddie Sutherland, Merle Oberon-David Niven, Ronald Colman-Benita Huma, and Eleanor Powell-Jimmy Stewart.
It would be interesting to find out what the fans think of this wholesale renunciation of celibacy, whether they prefer their screen heroes and heroines married or single.
Sept. 7, 1936 – El Paso Herald
Wife files answer to Clark Gable suit; Motion reveals no divorce action planned by couple
Clark Gable and his estranged wife do not contemplate obtaining a divorce, Mrs. Gable disclosed today in her answer to the screen star’s suit for court interpretation of an informal property settlement.
The Gables have been separated for more than a year.
Sept. 7, 1936 – The Mercury
Clark Gable and Carole Lombard glimpsed whispering this and that in a Hungarian lunchery…
Sept. 10, 1936 – The Morning Call
Clark Gable has sworn off bow ties, reportedly because Carole Lombard likes four-in-hands and presented him with dozens…

Two Stars Discover Their Temperaments Differ
Clark Gable and Carole Lombard have discovered their temperaments differ too widely to allow of friendship.
Incidentally, most of Clark’s friends have remarked that since the separation from his second wife, he has been exceedingly morose and cynical.
Sept. 15, 1936 – Stevens Point Journal
Friends of Miss Helene Knope of Stevens Point, who now is a special correspondent in Hollywood, will be interested in her interview with Clark Gable and her account of his diet, which she sent to the Stevens Point Journal.
Her story is as follows: “Speaking of that Clark Gable-Carole Lombard romance, it seems to be in full swing…”
Sept. 16, 1936 – The Salt Lake Tribune
(Jimmy Fidler column)
I accept more seriously than most the rumors of an ultimate marriage of Carole Lombard and Clark Gable.
This is why: In the first place, I think Carole is more than willing. In the second place, at a shooting range the other evening I asked Clark if he intends to marry again. “Sure,” he answered. “Why not? I’m normal.”
“What sort of woman will your next wife be?” I persisted.
He ceased firing, lowered the gunbutt from his shoulder, and said, “A woman who can make me laugh.”
How well Carole Lombard fulfills the requirement!
Sept. 18, 1936: Actors’ habits
The next time you see Carole Lombard on the screen, notice whether she twirls a cigarette between her first two fingers and her thumb.
Watch Clark Gable twist his neck in his collar, as if the collar were too tight.
See whether Spencer Tracy wrinkles his forehead too much; he thinks he does.
Every star has some idiosyncrasy in his screen mannerisms which he is constantly striving to correct and which he sees again and again as the picture is put on the screen.

Sept. 19, 1936: Partner swap
“MY MAN GODFREY” – William Powell and Carole Lombard, who had wanted to play together in a picture when they were married to each other, finally got the opportunity now that they are divorced. Carole and Powell are very friendly and both enjoyed the association.
Clark Gable often called for Miss Lombard after work, and William Powell would hurry to Miss Harlow. Strange indeed is the fact that Carole Lombard and Clark Gable appeared in a picture together, “No Man of Her Own.” Then Miss Lombard would leave the set to join her husband, William Powell.
“My Man Godfrey” was written by Eric Hatch, from a short story by him, and the screen play was done in collaboration with Morrie Ryskind, who is the co-author of that Pulitzer prize play, “Of Thee I Sing.”
Sept. 19, 1936; retrieved from NY Daily News
Sept. 19, 1936 – The South Bend Tribune
Carole Lombard today joined the parade of actresses who have adopted their screen names legally. The blond star, whose real name is Jane Peters, is having her attorney draw up a court petition to have Carole Lombard made her legal name.
Sept. 20, 1936 – The Des Moines Register
The “Valentine Ford” which CAROLE LOMBARD gave CLARK GABLE as a joke has received so much publicity Gable has had it painted black so he can use it without paralyzing traffic.
Sept. 20, 1936: Company picnic
MGM Studio Employees Hold Picnic
It was picnic time in Hollywood when this picture was taken. Keeping ants off their hard-boiled eggs are Clark Gable and Carole Lombard. The party was given for several hundred employees and their families by the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios.
Sept. 20, 1936; Retrieved from The Los Angeles Times
Sept. 22, 1936 – Star Tribune
CAROLE LOMBARD is demanding a very substantial increase in salary, or she will not sign her new contract with Paramount…
Sept. 23, 1936 – The San Francisco Examiner
PARAMOUNT is moving heaven and earth to borrow Clark Gable from MGM to costar with Carole Lombard in “Exclusive.”
The studio heads feel that, due to their muchly publicized romance, the combination would ring the box office bell such as it did with Robert Taylor and Barbara Stanwyck in “My Brother’s Wife.”Paramount, by the bye, will probably soon be on a very large borrowing spree, along with all the other studios, since no less than twenty films are being held up at the moment because of a dearth of leading men. It seems like a pretty good time for freelancers.
Getting back to Miss Lombard, her stock since “My Man Godfrey” has shot practically to the top of the ladder, since “Godfrey” has broken all existing box office records in Los Angeles and is starting out to repeat same in New York.
Sept. 24, 1936 – Pittsburgh Post Gazette
Clark Gable and Carole Lombard had more fun than anyone at the M-G-M picnic recently…
Sept. 26, 1936: Day at the Fair
MOVIE STARS ATTEND FAIR - The Chicago Tribune
Clark Gable and Carole Lombard, two of the reigning favorites of Hollywood, as they attended the Los Angeles county fair at Pomona, Cal.
Sept. 26, 1936 – Pittsburgh Post Gazette
That handsome couple at the Pomona Fair was none other than Clark Gable and Carole Lombard…
Sept. 26, 1936 – Detroit Free Press
Hollywood can get excited about the darndest things. Such as Carole Lombard riding around in a certain car, of a certain type and paint job, which everyone “knew” belonged to Gary Cooper. And the Coopers are supposed to be so happily married, too.
Well, it turned out that Carole was doing nothing of the sort. Said car was owned by Clark Gable, who has a perfect right to loan it to his friend. It happens to be an identical model of an automobile that Gary Cooper owns. But it stops right there, with the Coopers still very happily married. And Clark Gable and Carole Lombard still good friends.
Sept. 26, 1936 – The Los Angeles Times
Two “Romances” Not Serious
Sources close to all parties concerned say there is little likelihood that the current “romances” featuring Carole Lombard and Clark Gable, and Bill Powell and Jean Harlow, will end in the altar. None of them appears to be marriage minded at the current writing, although both twosomes find each other’s company enjoyable and go around together a lot. However, a woman has a right to change her mind – and a man, too, for that matter.
Sept. 29, 1936 – The Spokesman
(Sheilah Graham column)
Clark Gable and Carole Lombard decided to patch up their quarrel for the sake of the joint box they owned for last week’s Pacific southwest tennis tournament.
Another interested observer at the matches was Mrs. Rhea Gable, who spent most of the time looking sadly at the husband from whom she is separated and his blond companion.
Sept. 29, 1936 – The Miami News
Over the Teacups
Carole Lombard, who temporarily lost her title as Hollywood’s most outspoken femme to Arlene Judge, has won it again, under the gentle tutelage of Clark Gable. Clark, in his better moments, can beat any longshoreman at his own game of verbal fireworks, say his friends. And no fish-wife that ever was (say her enemies) can hold a candle to Carole when it comes to verbombast.
Sept. 29, 1936 – Honolulu Star
The Clark Gable-Carole Lombard romance is not quite made to order for movieland’s purposes, Gable is an MGM player and Miss Lombard is at Paramount. Paramount has been trying to borrow Gable to team him in a picture with Carole and MGM has been trying to borrow Carole for the same purpose. These efforts having failed, both studios made the best of the situation by allowing a third studio, Universal, to use the two stars together in My Man Godfrey. (Note: Confused writer??)
Another stunt is to cast divorced couples together and to hint about possible reconciliations. This was done with William Powell and Carole Lombard and with Margaret Sullavan and Henry Fonda. No such reconciliations have, however, developed.

Alcina Handel
French soprano Patricia Petibon sings one of the biggest handelian arias. Her voice in this recording is just amazing, and she adds a lot of dramatism. Handel’s Alcina Handel’s Alcina ● by Chris Lynch This February, Indiana University Opera will present Handel’s fantasy opera Alcina in a new production designed by Robert Perdziola, directed by Chas Rader-Shieber, and conducted by Arthur Fagen. On musical grounds, this is a more-than-competent reading of Handel's classic opera, with some fine singing throughout. Naglestad is a lovely Alcina, and other principles are strong (notable standout is Mahnke's Oberto). Conductor Hacker coaxes a good reading out of the Stuttgart forces. Handel: Alcina / Curtis, DiDonato, Rensburg, Beaumont Release Date: Label: Archiv Produktion (Dg) Catalog #: 4777374 Spars Code: n/a Composer: George Frideric Handel Performer: Kobie van Rensburg, Vito Priante, Joyce DiDonato, Sonia Prina.
Mio Bel Tesoro Handel Pdf
Quite possibly Handel's most magnificent opera, Alcina is filled with extraordinary musical riches & a lot of magnificent magic. Two exceptional women lie at the heart of the story: Alcina is a potent sorceress, which Bradamante counters with her self-confidence and determination on her quest to rescue her lover Ruggiero from Alcina's spells. If she succeeds, they will escape and no doubt live happily ever after. However, if not, Ruggiero will be transformed into the newest trophy in Alcina's enormous gallery of former lovers. Which will it be? Can he resist her magic?
Now in his fourth season as music director of Orchestra Seattle and the Seattle Chamber Singers, Clinton Smith also maintains a position on the music staff of Santa Fe Opera, where he most recently served as cover conductor for Leonard Slatkin on a production of Samuel Barber’s Vanessa. During the 2017–2018 season, he will make three company debuts, conducting Il barbieri de Siviglia at Dayton Opera, Le nozze di Figaro at Tacoma Opera and Alcina at Fargo-Moorhead Opera. He will also return to Pacific Northwest Opera to conduct Turandot, and to Atlanta Opera to prepare The Seven Deadly Sins. Clinton’s recent conducting credits include The Mikado for Kentucky Opera, Hansel und Gretel and Norma for Pacfic Northwest Opera, Il barbieri di Sivigliafor the University of Michigan Opera Theater, and La finta giardiniera for Baldwin Wallace University.
He has served on the music staff of Santa Fe Opera, Juilliard Opera, Minnesota Opera, Atltanta Opera, Portland Opera, Kentucky Opera and Ash Lawn Opera. Other recent posts include four seasons as artistic director and principal conductor of the St. Cloud Symphony, assistant conductor and chorus master for San Francisco Opera’s Merola Opera Program, assistant conductor for Glimmerglass Opera’s productions of Tolomeo and The Tender Land, music director of Western Ontario University’s Canadian Operatic Arts Academy, and guest coach at the National University of Taiwan.
For four seasons, Minnesota Opera engaged Clinton as cover conductor and chorus master, where he led mainstage performances of La traviata and Madama Butterfly and covered the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and Minnesota Opera Orchestra in over 20 productions. During 2011, Clinton conducted a workshop and prepared the world premiere of Kevin Puts’ opera Silent Night, which subsequently won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize in Music. For Minnesota Opera’s New Works Initiative, and as an avid fan of new music, Clinton prepared workshops of Douglas J. Cuomo’s Doubt, Ricky Ian Gordon’s The Garden of the Finzi-Continis and the North American premiere of Jonathan Dove’s The Adventures of Pinocchio, as well as Dominick Argento’s Casanova’s Homecoming and Bernard Herrmann’s Wuthering Heights.
Patrick Hansen continues his unique career throughout North American as an operatic stage director, conductor, and vocal coach. His stagings have garnered praise in both Canada and the United States. Opera Canada wrote, ' Patrick Hansen captured the opera's bohemian vitality - the city of Paris itself was the characterful backdrop to the action. When he ran out of space in Act II, the crowd simply spilled down into the auditorium . . the comic business was well handled . . . The acting, indeed, was a strong point throughout.'
Mr. Hansen has been on the musical staffs of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Pittsburgh Opera, Tulsa Opera, Opera Memphis, Des Moines Metro Opera, Ash Lawn Opera, The Juilliard Opera Center, Fargo-Moorhead Opera, and Glimmerglass Opera as well as being the Director of Artistic Administration for Florida Grand Opera during the opening of the Miami Arts Centre.
At ease in opera and musical theatre, his stage directing credits encompass the entire spectrum of repertoire now being presented in opera companies; Alcina, Orfeo ed Eudridice, Cosi fan tutte, Die Zauberflute, L'elisier d'amore, La traviata, Dialogue des Carmelites, Albert Herring, Hansel and Gretel, La Boheme as well as the musicals Camelot and Trouble in Tahiti.
Alcina Handel Opera
Currently the director of Opera McGill in Montreal at McGill University, Mr. Hansen is the former director of the Young American Artist Program at Glimmerglass Opera, and has presented masterclasses and coachings with the Young Artists of Virginia Opera and for many years served as the stage director at the Kennedy Center with the Washington Chorus' Essential Verdi. Mr. Hansen returns to Fargo-Moorhead after successful stagings of Fille du Regiment, Suor Angelica/Gianni Schicchi, and The Magic Flute in previous seasons.
Miriam Khalil is an acclaimed Lebanese-Canadian soprano specializing in opera and concert performance. She has been lauded as a 'skilled, versatile artist' with a “signature warm lyrical voice” by Musical Toronto and described as 'dark, dangerous and alluring” by Opera Going Toronto. Miriam is a graduate of the prestigious Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Studio, the Steans Institute for Young Artists (Ravinia) and the Britten-Bears Young Artist Programme in England. Love For All: Forever Palestine 🇵🇸!
Ben & Jerry’s Stop Sales in West Bank and East Jerusalem
— By Wilson Ring and Josef Federman | July 19, 2021
MONTPELIER, Vermont (AP) — Ben & Jerry’s said Monday it was going to stop selling its ice cream in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and contested east Jerusalem, saying the sales in the territories sought by the Palestinians are “inconsistent with our values.”
The announcement was one of the strongest and highest-profile rebukes by a well-known company of Israel’s policy of settling its citizens on war-won lands. The settlements are widely seen by the international community as illegal and obstacles to peace.
The move by the Vermont-based ice cream company drew swift reproach from Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, a former leader of the West Bank settlement movement who called it “an immoral decision and I believe that it will turn out to be a business mistake, too.”
The company informed its longstanding licensee — responsible for manufacturing and distributing the ice cream in Israel — that it will not renew the license agreement when it expires at the end of next year, according to a statement posted on the Vermont-based company’s website.
The Ben & Jerry’s statement cited “the concerns shared with us by our fans and trusted partners.”
The company did not explicitly identify those concerns, but last month, a group called Vermonters for Justice in Palestine called on Ben & Jerry’s to “end complicity in Israel’s occupation and abuses of Palestinian human rights.”
“How much longer will Ben & Jerry’s permit its Israeli-manufactured ice cream to be sold in Jewish-only settlements while Palestinian land is being confiscated, Palestinian homes are being destroyed, and Palestinian families in neighborhoods like Sheik Jarrah are facing eviction to make way for Jewish settlers?” the organization’s Ian Stokes said in a June 10 news release.
In a Monday statement, the organization said Ben & Jerry’s actions did not go far enough.
“By maintaining a presence in Israel, Ben & Jerry’s continues to be complicit in the killing, imprisonment and dispossession of Palestinian people and the flaunting of international law,” said the Vermont group’s Kathy Shapiro.
The Israeli foreign ministry called Ben & Jerry’s decision “a surrender to ongoing and aggressive pressure from extreme anti-Israel groups” and the company was cooperating with “economic terrorism.”
“The decision is immoral and discriminatory, as it singles out Israel, harms both Israelis and Palestinians and encourages extremist groups who use bullying tactics,” the ministry said in a statement. It also called on Ben & Jerry’s to withdraw its decision.
While Ben & Jerry’s products will not be sold in the settlements, the company said it will stay in Israel through a different arrangement. But doing so will be difficult. Major Israeli supermarket chains, the primary distribution channel for the ice cream maker, all operate in the settlements.
Founded in Vermont in 1978, but currently owned by consumer goods conglomerate Unilever, Ben & Jerry’s has not shied away from social causes. While many businesses tread lightly in politics for fear of alienating customers, the ice cream maker has taken the opposite approach, often espousing progressive causes.
Ben & Jerry’s took a stand against what it called the Trump administration’s regressive policies by rebranding one of its flavors Pecan Resist in 2018, ahead of midterm elections.
The company said Pecan Resist celebrated activists who were resisting oppression, harmful environmental practices and injustice. As part of the campaign, Ben & Jerry’s said it was giving $25,000 each to four activist entities.
Aida Touma-Sliman, an Israeli lawmaker with the Joint List of Arab parties, wrote on Twitter that Ben and Jerry’s decision Monday was “appropriate and moral.” She added that the “occupied territories are not part of Israel” and that the move is an important step to help pressure the Israeli government to end the occupation.
The West Bank and east Jerusalem were captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war. Some 700,000 Israeli settlers now live in the two territories — roughly 500,000 in the occupied West Bank and 200,000 in east Jerusalem.
Israel treats the two areas separately, considering east Jerusalem as part of its capital. Meanwhile, Israel considers the West Bank as disputed territory whose fate should be resolved in negotiations. However the international community considers both areas to be occupied territory. The Palestinians seek the West Bank as part of a future independent state, with east Jerusalem as their capital.
Israel in recent years has become a partisan issue in Washington, with many Democrats — particularly of the party’s progressive wing — growing increasingly critical over a number of Israeli policies, including settlement construction, and former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s close ties with former President Trump. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has been an outspoken critic of Israel.
The BDS movement — shorthand for a grassroots, Palestinian-led movement that advocates boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israeli institutions and businesses — applauded Ben & Jerry’s decision as “a decisive step towards ending the company’s complicity in Israel’s occupation and violations of Palestinian rights,” but called upon the company to do more.
“We hope that Ben & Jerry’s has understood that, in harmony with its social justice commitments, there can be no business as usual with apartheid Israel,” a statement read.
The Israeli government says the BDS movement masks a deeper aim of delegitimizing or even destroying the entire country.
The Yesha Council, an umbrella group representing the roughly 500,000 Israelis living in West Bank settlements, said “there’s no need to buy products from companies that boycott hundreds of thousands of Israeli citizens because of the place they choose to live.” It said Ben & Jerry’s decision “brought a bad spirit to such a sweet industry” and called on Israelis to buy locally produced ice cream this summer.
Ben & Jerry’s move on Monday may not be the final chapter in the saga. Airbnb announced in 2018 that it would stop advertising properties in Israeli settlements. Several months later, after coming under harsh criticism from Israel and a federal lawsuit by Israeli Americans who owned property in the settlements, the company reversed its decision.

‘You’ve Been Served’: Wisconsin Hospitals Sued Patients Even During Pandemic
When her doorbell rang Sunday night, Blanche Jordan was just starting a new Game of Thrones puzzle on her living room floor.
Jordan, 39, is a breast-cancer survivor who is taking social distancing seriously, so she put on a mask before opening the door. A woman handed Jordan a paper and said: “You’ve been served.”
The paper was a court summons that said Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital, Inc. was suing Jordan for $7,150. Just three weeks before, Jordan had paid off a different $5,000-plus Froedtert debt linked to a hysterectomy that her insurance did not cover.
A lawsuit was the last thing Jordan expected during a viral pandemic.
“This lady came to my door. She didn’t have a mask on. She didn’t have gloves. And she looked at me like I’m crazy because I had a mask across my face,” said Jordan, who lives in Milwaukee and works as a caregiver at an assisted living facility outside of the city. “I’m high-risk,” she said.
Life in Wisconsin, as in the rest of the country, has been transformed by COVID-19 in the past three weeks. Wisconsin declared a public health emergency on March 12, yet firms representing health systems in the state continued to sue patients over medical debt.
Jordan is one of at least 46 people sued by Froedtert in small claims court since March 12. Those cases are among at least 104 similar suits filed statewide by health systems over the same period, according to an analysis of small claims cases by Wisconsin Public Radio and Wisconsin Watch.
Steve Schooff, a spokesman for the hospital, said Tuesday that Froedtert “suspended filing small claims suits” as of March 18 in response to COVID-19.
“In addition, we continue to work with patients related to financial counseling and are allowing patients with financial hardship who are on a payment plan to defer payments while financial assistance is discussed with them,” he said.
Yet court records at the time showed at least 18 lawsuits filed on the hospital’s behalf since then, including 15 filed on March 31 alone. (The suit against Jordan was filed on March 17; she was served on March 29.) Schooff did not explain the discrepancy. All 18 of those cases have since been dismissed.

‘Really? In The Middle Of All This?’
Court records show that at least six additional health systems have also sued patients during the pandemic.
UW Health in Madison has filed 19 lawsuits since March 12. Marshfield Clinic, which covers northern, central and western Wisconsin, has filed at least 14 since that date, followed by Bellin Health, based in Green Bay (11); La Crosse-based Gundersen Health System (10); and Aspirus Grand View Health System, which serves parts of northern Wisconsin (3). Froedtert South, which serves southeastern Wisconsin, also filed one suit.
Bellin chief operating officer and chief financial officer Jim Dietsche said Thursday the health system ceased legal actions on debt collection on March 18, and that the nine suits filed since then were “an error and we apologize for that.”
The five other systems contacted for this story said they have since paused certain legal actions, which court records support.
Tom Russell, a UW Health spokesman, said the health system instructed its legal agencies on March 26 “to cease pursuit of any legal activity.”
“These should be stopped for now,” he said.
Tom Duncan, vice president and chief operating officer for Froedtert South, said his system has generally “suspended filing small claim suits” during the pandemic. “However, in rare circumstances, certain small claim suits may be filed to preserve Froedtert South rights. For example: If a medical debt has been in existence for six years, and the statute of limitations is about to end.”
One Madison resident described being “mortified” when a process server knocked on her family’s door on March 28 to serve papers for a UW Health lawsuit over $1,135.90 in medical debt. UW Health filed that lawsuit before March 26. In a phone interview, the resident asked not to be named in this story because she was embarrassed by the debt related to her husband’s heart condition.
“I couldn’t believe someone would do that,” she said about receiving legal papers during a pandemic. “They’re our bills, but really? In the middle of all of this?”
The woman said her husband offered the process server sympathy, apologizing that the man had to serve papers during a public health emergency.
The woman, who works for a Madison-based nonprofit, saw things differently. “That’s a choice, too. I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night.”
Medical Debts And State Response
Some hospitals have stopped the practice of suing patients in recent months following investigative reporting by Kaiser Health News, MLK50, ProPublica and other outlets.
Jessica Roulette, an attorney with Legal Action of Wisconsin, which provides free legal services to low-income people, said medical bills often fall below things like rent, utilities and food in the “hierarchy of bills and obligations.” Most people facing hospital lawsuits are working and “underinsured,” with plans that leave them on the hook for thousands of dollars in health bills, Roulette said.
Bobby Peterson, executive director of ABC for Health, a nonprofit public-interest law firm in Madison, called it stressful under normal circumstances to face a medical debt lawsuit.
“Today it’s a whole new ballgame,” he said, referring to workers who have lost their jobs and possibly health insurance during the pandemic.
Peterson saw a possible disconnect between some hospitals’ recent decisions to stop suing and the law firms they’ve retained.
“Are the hospitals communicating their own policies internally? And are they communicating with their hired guns out there, making sure that they back off?” Peterson asked.
Paycheck To Paycheck
The state of Wisconsin considers Blanche Jordan, the Milwaukee caregiver, an “essential” worker during the pandemic, meaning her job is not subject to the “Safer At Home” order. She works five days each week at an assisted living facility from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., alternating work on the weekends. The pay — $15.75 per hour — barely covers her expenses.
Rent, health insurance, utilities and the nearly $300 in garnishments by Froedtert that recently ended, left Jordan with little of her $1,300 biweekly paycheck to spend on other necessities. She filed for bankruptcy in 2016 when, despite being insured, she said she could no longer afford to pay off her debts from treating her aggressive breast cancer.
That journey briefly left her homeless following an eviction, but she generally manages to pay her current landlord on time, Jordan said.
“I’m blessed to have a landlord that’s understanding because his wife died of breast cancer,” she said.
Jordan said her most recent medical debt stemmed from a hysterectomy that was separate from but related to her cancer treatment. She chose Froedtert to perform the procedure, considering it “the best hospital that we have in Wisconsin.”
What she did not realize, she said: Froedtert did not accept her insurance, which she purchased on a federal exchange created by the Affordable Care Act. Hospital administrators accepted and ran her insurance card, Jordan said, but never mentioned that her insurer would not cover the procedure.
In 2019, a judge in the Milwaukee County Small Claims Commissioner Court awarded Froedtert a judgment against Jordan for about $5,300, including court fees, which the hospital claimed by garnishment of her wages. She finished paying that debt during the first week of March — only to be served papers for the alleged $7,150 debt three weeks later.
Jordan assumes this covers the remainder of the bill for her hysterectomy, which she remembers totaling around $12,000. Wisconsin caps small claims at $10,000.
She will eventually see her day in court, although it’s not clear when. The coronavirus postponed her court date to May 28, assuming court proceedings resume by then.
Until then, Jordan will continue to take care of people at the assisted living facility, and she will otherwise stay isolated at home, she said, likely playing Scrabble or Uno with her family.

Single Review: “I Can Change” by Lake Street Dive
The arrival of Lake Street Dive’s sixth studio album is nearly here, Free Yourself Up set for a May 4th release (and out via Nonesuch Records), the band who seems poised to be one of the next breakout bands in the music world giving fans another riveting look at the album recently with the release of “I Can Change”. A gentle, largely acoustic track, it acts as a vessel for Rachael Price and her stunning set of pipes, the vocalist delivering another ravishing performance that will leave listeners in awe. Soulful and punctuated by hints of a jazz influence, she carefully and gorgeously articulates each word, putting as much emphasis on the next as was noticeable on the last, literally keeping the listener hanging on to every word. Matching the delicate nature captured in the minimalistic music bed to tapping into a deeper, more forceful tone that is rich and lush, her delivery is sincere and heartfelt as she reflects on the state of things in regards to both the world and herself, pondering where society and even she as an individual are and the point both can evolve to.
“Hate casts a long shadow. I know that I lie in it, and let it rule my mind from time to time…” Those opening lines establish “I Can Change” so magnificently, the song being rooted in the hate that persists in the world today, where some want to continue to oppress and marginalize different groups based solely on their race, beliefs, or other ways people choose to live their lives. The chorus, “…I can change. I can still change…” is meant to ring loud and true and resonate with everyone, a call to be better and to move beyond such basic actions and emotions, highlighting a person’s desire to be and do better. To be more respectful of the other lives they get to coexist with on this planet and be more welcoming to all individuals. The second verse ends with another superb line, “…I am scared that I won't get it right. But fear won't rule my heart tonight.” It’s marked by hesitation in Price’s voice, the need to hold oneself to a higher standard ultimately overriding the fear of failing. Perhaps the greatest thing that “I Can Change” has going for it is the fact that, while the message behind it is laid out pretty plainly, it’s still a song that is open to interpretation. The hate it speaks of could just as easily be touching on self-loathing, the change in question running even deeper, perhaps instead referring to a personal battle with some sort of addiction or other destructive behavior. The song providing a reminder that it’s never too late to change and that a future always lies ahead, no matter how off course a person may believe themselves to be. A powerful and stirring song, “I Can Change” further conveys the artistic and musical might that Lake Street Dive possesses. It’s beautifully crafted, boasting wonderful layers and it’s teeming with emotions, the fact that they are more nuanced just making the latest single from Free Yourself Up all the more compelling. Even If You’re Locked In A Store’s Beer Cooler, It’s Not Okay To Drink Whatever You Want
As the saying goes, when life hands you lemons, make lemonade. However, if life locks you in the beer cooler, don’t crack open a few cold ones — tempting though that may be — or you may find yourself charged with retail theft.
According to Marshfield, WI, police, a 38-year-old man entered a walk-in beer cooler at a Kwik Trip convenience store before midnight on Tuesday night, reports WAOW.com.
Although the store is open 24/7, the beer cooler automatically locks at 12. a.m. Thus, at the stroke of midnight, the man was stuck… and it sounds like he was fine with that situation.
“The subject found himself locked in the beer cooler, knew that Kwik Trip would not sell him any beer, so he decided to remain in the beer cooler,” the chief of police told the news station, adding that there were actions he could’ve taken to let someone know he was in there.
Instead, he allegedly drank an 18-ounce bottle of Icehouse Beer and three cans of Four Loko (which yes, still exists), and tumbled over a stack of Busch Light 30-packs.
He was only discovered at about 6 a.m. when another customer spotted him in the cooler. Though he fled the scene, he was later arrested and charged with stealing the beer. He’s in county jail on a probation hold from another case that required him to remain sober.
Kwik-Trip says it will review its security.
“I’ve heard of people being locked inside of buildings, never inside of a beer cooler or a beer cave,” the chief said, calling the situation a “unique” one in his 20-year career.

Wood Stove Safety
The smell and sound of a wood fire, the warmth that it emits, and possibly some savings for your wallet as well—no wonder so many of us enjoy heating our homes with wood stoves. Used properly, wood stoves can be an effective way to heat your place. But wood stoves also carry some risks if you don’t understand what you need to do to use one safely.
Fires in the U.S. that occur because of wood-burning stoves and related appliances cause around 2,500 injuries and 280 deaths each year. Home heating systems in general are the second most common reason for all winter house fires (cooking is the first). We can tell you about three recent house fires caused by wood stoves:
2016: A house fire near the Frederick-Carroll county border in Maryland did $200K worth of damage. Fortunately, everyone got out safely. A malfunctioning wood stove was the cause.
2016: A house fire in Mahanoy Township, Pennsylvania, resulted in no injuries, with smoke detectors getting the credit for saving lives. A malfunctioning wood stove was the cause.
2016: A house fire in Marshfield, Massachusetts left the home uninhabitable. There were no injuries, because of working smoke detectors. A faulty wood stove chimney was the reason for the fire.
Tips on How to Use a Wood Stove Safely
We have some important suggestions for you from the Annapolis, MD, Fire Chief David L. Stokes, who noted that his firefighters respond to approximately 15 to 20 chimney fires every winter. “Failing to properly maintain your wood burning fireplace or wood stove poses a hazard to your family which is real and most always preventable,” said Chief Stokes.
More than one-third of homes in the U.S. use wood stoves and other fueled appliances as the primary source for their home’s heat. But the risks can be high when using wood for fuel. Creosote buildup in stovepipes can cause fires, so your wood stove needs to be cleaned and maintained regularly in order to function safely and effectively.
Ready to enjoy your wood stove while protecting your family from a fire or carbon monoxide poisoning? Check out these suggestions:
Have your wood stove professionally installed. Some insurance companies refuse to pay for fire damage caused by stoves that were not.
Clearance between the wood stove and walls is critical to preventing fires. A minimum of 36 inches is needed. Fire-resistant materials are also required to keep even noncombustible substances from bursting into flame.
Ensure that the stove is properly vented. Carbon monoxide kills entire families every winter.
All stove vent pipes should be three feet or more above the roof.
Once your stove is installed, use a certified specialist to inspect and clean your wood stove every year.
Keep the area around the stove clear of flammable items.
Make sure the air inlets on the stove remain open.
Consider installing stovepipe thermometers, used to monitor the flue’s temperature.
NEVER use flammable liquids to start a fire.
Use only seasoned hardwoods. They will produce less creosote buildup.
Do not burn trash or other debris in your stove.
Always allow ashes to cool before putting them into a metal container with a tight cover. The container should be kept at least 10 feet from any building, especially your home. Use water to saturate the ashes.
Make sure your roof is clear of flammable debris such as leaves and pine needles.
Cut off any tree branches hanging near the stove’s flue or your chimney.
Use a wire mesh screen to cover the chimney’s top, preventing flaming bits from shooting out of the top of the chimney.
Stack firewood 30 feet or more away from your home.
Keep up with recalls. Wood stoves, like any other product, can be recalled by the CPSC for safety flaws. There is currently a recall on Hearth & Home Technologies Quadra Fire® Explorer III wood stoves. Call Hearth & Home Technologies from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Central Time weekdays at 1-800-883-6690.
Finally, make sure your home has both smoke and carbon monoxide detectors that are in good working order. In two of the fires mentioned above, people and pets got out of the house without injuries because they had working smoke detectors. Also, when it comes to carbon monoxide, note that the colorless, odorless gas is particularly toxic to seniors and children. Wood fires create carbon monoxide that can kill if the stove is not properly vented.
