Well I can't very well stop this parade now, but this was the generation where the English localization team really just kinda started clocking out early and just used a lot of the Japanese names directly.
Ilima is Ilima
Lana is Suiren and suiren[睡蓮] is the Japanese name of the pygmy water lily, hence her stature. Her English name is taken from the hawaiian word for the same plant.
Kiawe's name is Kaki, like kaki[柿] the Japanese persimmon.
Mallow's name is Mao from hawaiian Ma'o, Gossypium tomentosum, Hawaiian Cotton.
Sophocles' name is Mamane named after the māmane, Sophora chrysophylla, which is where they got the English name.
Acerola is Acerola.
Mina's name is Matsurika and the matsurika[茉莉花] is the Arabian jasmine.
Hapu's name is Hapuu[ハプウ] in Japanese, but taken from hāpu'u 'i'i, the native name for the Hawaiian tree fern.
Oh crud... I forgot Nanu. His japanese name is Kuchinashi from kuchinashi[梔子], thr japanese name for the cape jasmine (Gardenia jasminoides).
Hala, Hala(Hara[ハラ]), Hala... the Hala tree, aka Thatch Screwpine.
Olivia was Lychee(Raichi[ライチ]) which is, you know, the Lychee fruit. Again, simple...
Kahili's a little more complicated. Original name is also Kahili(kahiri[カヒリ]) and Kāhili refers to a kind of feathered scepter held by Hawaiian royalty. It's from this that the Grevillea banksii gets the name Kahili Flower.
Molayne's just a weird choice of rewriting his actual name, Mullein(Maarein'[マーレイン]), which is just the Mullein plant.
(i can feel myself losing steam with this...but i'm so close to the end...)
[Kanto] [Johto] [Hoenn] [Sinnoh] [Unova] [Kalos] [Alola] [Galar] [Hisui] [Champs] [Paldea] [Paldea2] [Paldea3] [Teams] [Misc.]

Palila (No Common Name)
This finch-billed honeycreeper's entire life cycle is dependant upon māmane and naio forests. Its diet is māmane seeds, flowers, buds, and leaves and naio berries. The birds annual and seasonal population density is connected to māmane pod availability. Nesting typically occurs in māmane trees, while most roosting is done in naio trees.

Fun fact: Palila birds consume large amounts immature māmane seeds. Māmane seeds taste terrible and contain lethal amounts of quinolizidine alkaloid toxins; however, the birds are able to circumvent these protections by opening the seed with a specially adapted beak and removing the poisonous organs.
the palila is a critically endangered hawaiian honeycreeper (a member of the finch family) species. less than 5,000 palila are left in the wild. their population plummeted after destruction of their habitat and the trees they feed off of, and they now occupy only 10% of their former range. male and female palila can be distinguished by the male’s much brighter yellow head and distinct black lores.

V: SATOSHI. ( S&M ).
to give context to his s&m verse, i got’a talk about his canon divergence in xy&z: satoshi did, in fact, win in the finals against alain ( you can take this win from my cold, dead hands ), but the kalos crisis still plays out as it does IN CANON and because of the kalos crisis, satoshi has to postpone his matches against the elite four and carnet indefinitely until kalos is “healed”.
he still returns to kanto, shaken after everything that happened with fleur-de-lis and suffers from a sudden attack to his confidence. even after winning, even after moving one milestone closer to achieving his dream, he wonders if he really did deserve his victory. he barely scrapped through qualifying for the league in the first place, and he doesn’t really like the trainer he’s become ( so focused on winning without the heart of it all – he’s not happy, and he realises that he really hasn’t been for a while ).
so, he gets… stuck. he doesn’t really train with his POKéMON exactly, perhaps as he should considering he might have to battle an elite four + champion soon – instead, he kind of just… lounges around the house, and that really worries hanako. she does suggest that he go visit his POKéMON, which he does, and that helps, and so does helping her with her restaurant ( cleaning and serving only – hanako wouldn’t let him cook), but he still feels and acts down.
then, barri-chan wins a trip voucher to alola, and satoshi… actually starts to brighten up. he really enjoys his holiday in alola – the nature and the beauty of it all, and the fact that alola seems so open to the friendship between humans and POKéMON ( and hanako breathes out a sigh of relief seeing it ).
while doing a “tour” of the POKéMON school with mao, satoshi had debated about enrolling even though he’d technically be at the age to “graduate” in a few weeks’ time. however, when kapu kokeko gives him a z-ring, satoshi had a serious talk with pikachu about staying ( he really wanted alola to be a holiday and to stay as a holiday, and to have a POKéMON like kapu kokeko give him a z-ring, he knows that any holiday would be cut short ), but the two of them decided together that they’d stay and take each day as it is.
in my verse, satoshi is one-two years older than the rest of the teenagers in the cast (māmane is the only one two years younger – he skipped ahead a grade based on the merit of his science ), and he’s definitely the most experienced trainer there, even though kaki is quite good as well. he actually helps sneakily lecture sometimes without meaning to, just based on his experiences alone.
initially, ōkido nariya is the only one who is aware that satoshi was the latest winner of the kalos league ( since the crisis immediately drove away thoughts of who the winner might be from people’s minds, and not a lot of people in alola watch the kalos league ), but, after a while, kukui-hakase realises where exactly he thought he recognised satoshi from– as the winner of the kalos league, but he keeps quiet about his recognition of satoshi since satoshi’s been keeping that quiet for a while now, and kukui-hakase guesses satoshi might have a reason for that.

This is how you make a finale...as they show the end credits of the final Sun & Moon episode (now with Satoshi and Lilie gone), the group slowly depletes from 6 to 4 to 2 and to 1, and focusing on Mao who is the only one staying in Alola as everyone goes for their separate goals for the time being.
The Alola classroom fam may not be together anymore, but they all made sure to send EACH OTHER OFF without letting single one being left alone to bid farewell to until the end. This is the true meaning behind “Alola, Manalo”.

The palila is a critically endangered species of Hawaiian honeycreeper that feeds almost exclusively on the toxic seeds of the māmane plant. The poisonous seed coats are discarded, but the birds are still unaffected by the quinolizidine alkaloids in the seeds themselves, toxins strong enough to kill similarly-sized animals. The palila seem to avoid particular plants, which may have higher levels of poisons in their seeds, but it’s unknown how the birds know to avoid them. It is known that palila nestlings are not fed on the seeds, possibly because they are not yet immune to the toxins, and instead eat caterpillars that feed on māmane plants, perhaps building up the young birds’ resistance over time,
