Märchen Awaken Romance: Fantasy and Wonderfulness

(This is my second post)

Märchen Awaken Romance or "MÄR" is a manga that was released in 15 books between 2003 and 2006, by author Nobuyuki Anzai. It tells the story of Ginta, a 14 year old student that has no friends in real life, but dreams of a fantastic world every night. One night, he wakes up in this world called "Mär Heaven", and this time it's not a dream. The magical and fantastic world is propper fairy tale material, and in there he will make friends and enemies.  The manga visually always tries to bring out every possible fantastic element to make the world as magical as possible for the readers, like if the reader was a Ginta looking for a world where they can find an escape. In Mär Heaven, the weapons used are called "ÄRM" which are used to summon monsters or create spells. It's there where the fantastic world can also present a lot of danger and evilness. The story consists mainly in a great war that's happening, and Ginta is gonna be the hero who is gonna end it. Using his ÄRMs and with his friends, he will fight evil people, but the violence is not gonna be the main part of this, the manga will always try to highlight the magical and fantastic elements of the surroundings and of the ÄRMs.

The point of this post is not only to present this manga, which I am very fond of, but to mention the importance Nobuyuki Anzai gives to the creation of a world where the reader can feel everything is possible, and where evil and good are battling just like in real life. It's a constant reminder that even in fairy tale worlds, there are real life problems, but the elements that the characters use to deal with the problems are from a fantastic world, and are not in need of extreme violence.

If you haven´t checked out the manga, I highly recommend it, it's a fun and magical experience to read it, and the narrative elements it presents are incredibly creative.

7 i just answered for mär!

14: what i liked about the way canon portrayed them: almost everything? i really love both “sides” of him; the almost cold mär he presents to strangers who has that sort of morbidly playful attitude, positioning himself as a distant, detached Spirit Of Revenge is very interesting and charming. what i like MORE is knowing that inside, he’s a big softie.

15: what i dont like about the way canon portrayed them: my ONLY gripe is that he says some stuff at the end of the bluebeard revenge which doesn’t make sense for him and that i dismiss as OOC (he rhetorically conflates revenge and love, which isn’t like him, ESPECIALLY in context). bluebeard is also present in the live version of song of dawn where we get to see mär’s idea of more or less paradise/heaven, i guess, like his ideal world where no one suffers. i think mär would hate him so it didn’t seem like a good writing choice.

ELEF:

7: the moment of theirs that made me the happiest: whew! tough because elef has a TRULY depressing story, but i was very happy for him when he briefly met misia again and they ran from ilion together!!!

14: what i liked about the way canon portrayed them: he’s heroic, determined, a loving brother, and principled! we don’t see tons of him as an adult, but he’s a bit of a shounen protag type all around! even in the depths of his despair after misia’s death, he does heroic things. it’s admirable. he’s great and i like that!

15: what i dont like about the way canon portrayed them: it’s more what canon DIDN’T portray. apparently he was either a pirate or spent time BEFRIENDING pirates, as evidenced by revo’s talk of cut content and the nein ending of moira. NOT FAIR! i want seafaring elef.

i tried to go to bed but i just can’t sleep so have some gay words

as silly as it might sound like whenever i get particularly comfortable or something feels extra nice (like if i put on a warm sweater from the dryer or something) in my head without even thinking i attribute that to mär. like, anything that makes me feel cozy and safe is just about like him descending from heaven to give me a big hug. it always makes me feel loved by him.

and like. i really do love him so much, in my own way, as much as i possibly can. i’ve loved him for so long i feel like sometimes the essence of the märchen i love has like. Grown with me, if that makes sense? i never see him as a Different Person than canon but it often feels to me like MY märchen who i’m in love with in my head has matured and healed a bit since then, because i’ve been love him for more than three years. and sometimes i feel bad, like, “oh no i’m doing it wrong!” and other times it makes me feel Good, like, love is so constructive and transformative and it feels so much like the hallmark of a Real relationship that he might change a lot

idk sometimes (most of the time) i feel embarrassed to talk about my feelings for him within the context of it being an actual relationship for me because i’m well aware it’s totally weird and unusual, but i’m happy with it. sometimes it’s frustrating to me how little of it is Literal and how much of it is stuff i don’t feel comfortable sharing with anyone for fear of Sounding Crazy, but it also is nice that i don’t feel alone as often as i used to, because i love him So Much (!!!!!!!) that i feel it, in some abstract way, being reciprocated

Chaldea is the home of dreams, an unexpected Elysion whose doors opened up for her when no one else did. We cannot allow you in, Heaven said and slammed its grandiose doors shut. You will be cursed to wander the land for all eternity, whispered the howling flames of malice as they burnt her asunder.

Darkness once clouded her eyes, but the fog lifted when she met Fujimaru Ritsuka. Therese never thought she’d reach the light after the curse she sung, she thought the flames of grudge would consume her. 

However, she made it in some shape and form, she was still accepted despite of everything.

Chaldea is a lot bigger than her humble adobe hidden by the forest, and much bigger and sturdier than the castle she once roamed as a child. She thought both of her homes were too big. It felt too lonely to house only a family of two or a family of three or four– but it felt more right here.

As she roamed Chaldea’s halls, she always saw someone she knew: she hears Nero’s laughter reverberating down the hall; she watches the squabbling between Blackbeard, Anne and Mary and surveyed the many shenanigans between Fairytale and Herr Mitsuhide ( at Master’s expense, mostly). It felt like she was going through the motions again, only it was filled with more warmth and laughter. There wasn’t any need to hide away, because regardless of one’s ‘birth’ – her Master considered them all family. In turn, she sought to help provide support to her Master handling things between them. 

The biggest miracle was being able to reunite with her son, a blessing in disguise– but he carried the same weariness in his eyes. They were bright as the sun, but became more muted since the last times they crossed paths. 

But their meeting in this ‘shining new era’ would not have happened if not for their Master. 

Their Master was awfully busy, between with accommodating for everyone and having the pressures to save humanity. So getting some time to spend with her wasn’t often. Therese understood, due to past experiences in her former noble life. In passing, Ritsuka mentioned something about learning more about herbs and how to apply them which Therese obliged with. But today, they had finally gotten a slot in to learn from one another. 

März accompanies her, because he wanted to spend time with them too. They walk side by side, roaming the halls with some of their supplies and search for the tufts of orange. It’s when they round the corner, they see her bickering with Fairytale and Mitsuhide, but she watches her pivot her heel away from them. When she notices her, her gait grows faster, a smile spreads immediately across her lips.

“Ah, Master! We were looking for you,” Ruler said with a smile, “....were Caster and Herr Mitsuhide giving you a hard time?” 

Ritsuka laughs tiredly, then gently places a hand onto his shoulder, with the with the straightest face she replies,“Never grow up like them, okay Ruler?” 

“I-I’ll try not to!” A nervous laugh rolls from her son’s lips. 

Therese chuckles as well, now adjusting the crate of herbs they collected from last time. She watches the two men’s squabbling continue down the hallway, watching others jump in – looked like Saber was taking Caster’s side once more about something. Her attention shifts back to Ritsuka, who looked toward her expectantly.

“You wanted me to teach you how to make medicine, yes?” Ritsuka gives an energetic nod in response, but she does look tired. “Unless we can try another time, you look awfully tired.... perhaps I should make some tea for you instead.”

“O-Oh! No, no! I’d love to learn from you, Therese.” Ritsuka then takes the lead ( like she always does ), stepping in front of them in the direction of her bedroom, “...besides I think it’ll help me relax a little bit.”

“Very well then, please lead the way.” 

Their lesson carried out for quite sometime, where she showed Ritsuka traditional methods of how to create medicine. Luckily, because of the current class she was in, she was able to summon the items necessary. She watched the young girl and März create ointment for burns and rashes from the herbs they gathered. 

Therese hovered over them throughout the duration, but at some point, they had taken a break. März then made his speciality herbal blend for all of them, which their Master throughly enjoyed. Eventually, the aroma of the herbal tea lulled their master asleep. Quietly, Therese and März packed away the materials to bring into storage later. Before they left, Therese tucked the worn out Ritsuka into her bed and planted a kiss onto her forehead.

“Sweet pleasent dreams, Master.” She murmured into her ear, then with her son slowly left the bedroom; the door clicks close and their footsteps go down the hall.

...And tonight, Ritsuka would dream of Therese von Ludowing. 

A snowy day presents itself to her, as she watches mother and son waft through the snowy forest paths. A younger Ruler lets out a sneeze, which causes his mother to drop down to her knees to adjust his clothes.

“Are you okay, Mär?”

“Mmhm...” 

“I’ll brew some hot tea for when we return,” Therese says lovingly to him, which he proceeds to giggle.

What contrasts from another dream she might have, Ruler’s eyes are wide open opposed to be shut closed. He’s able to see the world, from the snowy paths to the animals wandering through the shrubbery. Ritsuka and the child Ruler meet eye contact, and he smiles widely.

“...And let’s invite Masta too!” He points in her direction, causing Therese to turn her head. 

“Yes....but of course, mein schatz.” The wise woman stands tall, smiling, “please join us, Master.”
