My bookshelf!
Not pictured: The Water Outlaws by S. L. Huang, Strike the Zither by Joan He, and Zachary Ying and the Dragon Emperor by Xiran Jay Zhao
Two years ago, I decided to completely stop purchasing books by white authors. I definitely have a preference for East Asian (especially Chinese) and indigenous authors. I'm currently expanding it to include S/SE Asian and African/Black authors.
Books I haven't read yet: The Poppy War, Never Whistle at Night, Moonstorm, Of Jade and Dragons, The Girl with No Reflection, Fathomfolk, The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi, The Night Ends with Fire, and the Emperor of the Endless Palace.
Books I'll be getting soon: A Bright Heart by Kate Chenli, Pachinko by Min Jin Lee, and The Ballad of Jacquotte Delahey by Briony Cameron
Update: I finished reading A Bright Heart, Of Jade and Dragons, and The Night Ends with Fire, along with a few others that I didn't describe in the last paragraph. I'm currently halfway through Fathomfolk.
PS: I wasn't aware Shannon Chakraborty was white when I bought the book, but my book shelf is also lacking Muslim representation

Celebrate J.R.R. Tolkien’s Birthday with 54 Queer Fantasy Books!
Today, January 3rd, is J.R.R. Tolkien Day—the day we celebrate the legend’s birthday. It’s hard to imagine the fantasy genre without Tolkien’s influence on it. That’s why, we figured, what better way to celebrate than by having an adventure with an awesome fantasy book? And, as this is the first time we’ve done a queer fantasy rec list, our reccing crew got very excited, with the result that this is one of the longest lists we’ve ever posted. We asked our contributors for great queer, fantasy recommendations, and boy, did they deliver! We collected a list of whooping 54 titles, all thanks to Sanne, Kelas, Shadaras, Nina Waters, Shea Sullivan, E. C., Adrian Harley, Alex, D. V. Morse, Zel Howland, Shannon, Dei Walker, Linnea Peterson and an anonymous contributor.

Having listened to the Graphic Audio full-cast audobook for All Systems Red, it was fun but I have some thoughts about the voice acting and direction. So now I’m just daydreaming about “if I had Billionaire Money I would buy the audio rights to TMBD and direct and produce another full cast audio version with voice actors handpicked and paid lavishly by Me.”
The cast being:
All Systems Red:
Murderbot: Kevin R. Free is the voice of Murderbot to a lot of people. I would think very hard about this but it would be a foundational return to form. However I feel like I want to reach out and find a non-binary VA because it's a niche that's been tragically underrepresented in Murderbot VAs. I joked before about Vico Ortiz playing live-action Murderbot but do they want to try their hand at voice acting?
Mensah: Cecilia Lynn-Jacobs. Voices Captain Lovelace on Wolf 359. Has incredible talent and range and does the Intrepid Galactic Explorer so well.
Pin-Lee: Emily Woo Zeller. An audiobook narrator I've consistently liked.
Ratthi: Stephen Dookie. He plays the part of Polites in Epic: The Musical and he's excellent in a very sweet, upbeat, friendly way.
Gurathin: Sungwon "ProZD" Cho. I'm picturing somewhere in the range of his Miles Edgeworth voice for this.
Arada: Michelle "Vixy" Dockrey. She's a singer not a VA but her voice sounds so nice.
Overse: Tanja Milojevic. Her range is incredible.
Bharadwaj: Rukhmani Desai (Captain Tripathi, The Strange Case of Starship Iris. She has that calm, reasonable, rational, desperately kind character voice she plays well in Starship Iris that I think would go well for Bharadwaj)
Volescu: Zach Valenti. The vibes are right.
Additional voices by Tanja Milojevic and Zach Valenti. Yes all of them.
Artificial Condition:
ART: Janelle Monáe and I mean it
Tapan: ItMe of InCo Podcast
The ComfortUnit: also ItMe because an important part of listening to faer acting is realizing in awe how fae voices so many characters at once and make them all sound distinct.
Tlacey: kinda thinking Ariela Rotenberg. she does smugly confidently evil very well. However we cannot discount casting ItMe for this role also
Additional voices by Tanja Milojevic and Zach Valenti.
Rogue Protocol:
Don Abene: Emma Sherr-Ziarko. She also deserves to be an intrepid space leader again.
Miki: ItMe again in InCo Season 2 Updated SAWA mode
Wilken: me. I want a part. I could totally be a badass evil space assassin
Gerth: does Gerth even have any lines.
Additional voices by Tanja Milojevic and Zach Valenti.
Exit Strategy:
Serrat: Zach Libresco. this casting + Janelle Monáe as ART were what drove me to make this post in the first place.
The Combat SecUnit: Ellen McLain in GLaDOS mode. All 2 lines it has.
Network Effect:
Amena: Ishani Kanetkar (The Strange Case of Starship Iris, The Godshead Incidental, excellent VA for a proud and curious but scared young person)
Iris: Jordan Cobb (Janus Descending, Primordial Deep, excellent VA for a gritted-teeth calm scientist in a strange and dangerous place)
Seth: Avery Brooks (I know it is not the 90s anymore. but. Captain Sisko. I can imagine <3 )
Martyn: Alexander Siddig / Siddig El-Fadil (Dr. Bashir). They're TV actors but! I want them as the Ship Captain Husbands
The rest of ART's crew: other podcast VAs I love who I haven't come up with a role for yet. Kristen DiMercurio, Beth Eyre, James Oliva.
Supervisor Leonide: Claudia Christian (Commander Ivanova on Babylon 5 <333 )
Eletra: Michaela Swee who is very busy working at An Actual Hospital but I have a billion dollars in this dream scenario so I can pay her to take a day and record like 4 lines
Ras: Zach Valenti. This is very important.
Three: Jackie Andrews who plays R. J. McCabe on Starship Iris and Elinor Lopez on The Pasithea Powder has the right Vibes For This
Zach Valenti as the Additional Voice of every goon and target who gets the shit scared out of them and/or dies.
Fugitive Telemetry:
Indah: Molly Olguin maybe. she could Be Indah. Absolutely means we need Jackie Hedeman to have a role in FT too.
Tifany: Michelle Agresti (Wolf 359, Arden)
Aylen: Tracey Sayed (also Arden)
Jollybaby, Tellus, Balin: I would open the floor to the delightful Murderbot fandom. Who wants to voice a Preservation bot
Additional voices by--well you know the drill.
#The Murderbot Diaries#fancast#ItMe InCo Creator I hope you're okay with me tagging you. I don't know your name#this is a sign for everyone to listen to Wolf 359; The Strange Case of Starship Iris; InCo; Arden; The Pasithea Powder; and Janus Descendin#whoof I put way too much time and effort into this

Well it’s not even a full week into April and I’ve read 124 books so far this year. I honestly don’t know what happened. Last year I read 119 books in total. I do believe that it’s a mixture of shitty mental health and reaching a point where I preferred to read instead of watching things or playing video games though.
Anyways, here’s some stats and the progress on my book goals I have for this year.
P.s. I’m not trying to say you need to read a lot or that I’m better because I’ve read so much I’m just sharing what I’ve read. I highly doubt I’ll ever read as much as I will this year in the future.
Books hauled so far this year and percentage read of hauled books: 33 (9.091%)
Number of books read this year that I own vs borrowed: 31 vs 93
Number of pages read so far: 36,762
Number of books read for each month: 41, 42, 32
Percentage of my physical books read: 18%
Number of physical books owned: 516
Number of books donated to a little free library and the number that is ready to leave: 6 and 5
My favourite books for each month:
January- Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross, Eragon by Christopher Paolini, Dead of Winter by Darcy Coates, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
February- A Little Bit Country by Brian D. Kennedy, The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston, Better Than The Movies by Lynn Painter
March- Once Upon A K-Prom by Kat Cho, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
My less favourite/ most disappointing reads for each month:
January- The Ruins by Scott Smith, Heartstopper volume 5 by Alice Oseman
February- Waverider by Kazu Kibuishi, Ruthless Vows by Rebecca Ross, The House is on Fire by Rachel Beanland
March- The Wager by David Grann, All of us Villains by Amanda Foody and C.L. Herman, The Death Cure by James Dashner, King of Immortal Tithe by Ben Alderson
Reading goals:
4/5 classics read
6/5 nonfiction read
9/12 romances read
0/12 paperbacks from hell read
0/12 point horror books read
9.091%/50% of books hauled in 2024 read
13/5 YouTuber favourites read
3/12 dragon books read
22/24 sci-fi books read
92/100 owned books read (this is going to drop by 4 soon)
Bonus goals:
0/2 memoirs read
3/3 true crime books reads
4/3 soft DNF’s read
0/5 literary fiction read

4 & 12?
hello hello, thanks for the ask!
4. What kind of music does your OCs listen to?
Evangeline (Heiress of the Night): she uses music wind down and calm herself, so much of the music she listens to is soft/low/quiet with a couple of higher energy songs that still has somber lyrics mixed in. Think Florence + the Machine, Ethel Cain, Mitski, Phoebe Bridgers, etc. (you can also listen to her character playlist on spotify called Heiress of the Night: Evangeline Clark!)
Edith (Come Back Home): after moving up north for college, Edith definitely felt homesick so I imagine that she uses music to feel less alone as it was one of the few bright spots in her childhood. Lot of older country like Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, and Patty Loveless and some newer artists like Colter Wall and Orville Peck. (also on spotify named Come Back Home: Edith Brown!)
12. Which story took the most research?
Heiress of the Night by far. It's set in New York, so a lot of research went into the physical structure of the city and its demographics by borough and neighborhood. There's a diverse set of characters and it took a significant amount of time developing names that a) reflected the character and b) respectful of naming practices from the cultures I was pulling character inspiration from (didn't want to pull a Cho Chang if you know what I'm saying).
Plus, I spent a lot time thinking about what things like magic, creatures, politics, dynamics, and histories would look like in the context of NYC being such a multi-cultural center and each of the Families coming from a unique background from one another. This even plays a role of some of the supernatural beings in the story as well.
Figuring out the timeline/family tree for the Clarks took a bit of time too.
