unfriendly reminder that when Thalia first met Jason in TLH, she probably did a double take because this scarred-up white boy looked a hell of a lot like a slightly younger Luke...

Annabeth stans and Percabeth shippers are talking about how ooc Annabeth is in WOTTG with her thinking Percy is stupid as if she hasn't constantly made fun of Percy's intelligence since the very beginning. As if she doesn't do it in every book, multiple times. Rick's characterization of Annabeth isn't changing, people are finally just growing up and realizing their fave ship when they were 12 isn't healthy. But instead of actually acknowledging that it's a bad ship they just blame the author.
Warnings: This is going to be a rant; bear with me. People from the "take everything as a personal offense" group stop reading. Will give us both the luxury of a peaceful mind.
It's easier to blame Rick, I think, given his series of shit decisions. The Wrath of a Triple Goddess is a complete abomination, and so is Chalice of the Gods in many ways. But at least it has helped readers understand the glaring flaws of Percabeth as a ship. How Percy's character is butchered to hype up Annabeth.
And I am completely exhausted of trying to get any of them to think rationally and in an unbiased manner. I can't make a willfully blind individual see sense after all.
But yeah, Annabeth has many, and I mean many character flaws throughout the series. The number of times I have made a post on Annabeth's flaws or even why Percabeth is incompatible.... At this point, I believe open-minded and careful readers are going to see and make their own conclusions, and the blind shippers will keep doing their own thing. This , I think, was my most recent post and will probably be one of my last ones on a similar topic. Unless I get newer asks that have some different viewpoints that I can actually explore cause, all has been said so far, I think.
I had a feeling that things would get better as they got older, more mature, you know, an Annabeth character arc of some sort. Maybe exploring the positive and negative nuances of Percabeth or even Percy's suicidal thoughts, non existent self esteem and how Annabeth has been unknowingly feeding into those.
She is one of the more iconic characters to people even outside the fandom. One from a very, very , and exclusive pool of actually strong female characters and the way her character is devolving isn't helping anything.
-------------------------------------------------------
All of Riordan's characters have such high potential, and the amount of plots he could explore is staggering, and yet he still dishes out the same generic plot again and again. He is in it for the money now, has been for a while, and so there's no hope there.
This might be a very hot take, but I think romance ruined the series. Rick kept slapping romantic relationships on every character as if that would suddenly make things better. Give them a relationship rather than explore their trauma. I guess it's the easier of the two.
But seriously, Caleo? Jiper? Solangelo ? (I can see the hate comments already). Whatever he was doing with Reyna, but at least she wasn't completely butchered.
Rick's problem is that he keeps giving more importance to romantic relationships and makes that the entire personality of a character.
He butchered Percy, even Jason at times, Leo bloody Valdez and Nico more prominently.
The way Percy and Nico's very deep and volatile bond and heavily dynamic relationship was butchered and distorted to feed into Solangelo and Percabeth, and I can't possibly understate how highly that's been going on.
Then Luke and Thalia's relationship was completely butchered for no absolute reason. I have no idea why. They were in love or at least had romantic feelings for each other, and Thalia just woke up and wanted to kill him? He literally gave all the angst to Annabeth even though Thalia had known him longer, and they had a more nuanced bond.
Jason's relationship with Camp Jupiter individuals was completely scrapped, his and Reyna's dynamic completely watered down, or even his and Leo's great friendship discarded all for Jiper or whatever else was shoved at him.
-------------------------------------------------------
As opposed to this whole shit show, I loved the relationships in the Magnus Chase series and Kane Chronicles. That was good stuff. Both character relationships and romantic ones even though I am pretty sure he got a lot of diverse representation wrong or so I have read recently.
Then there's the stupid, blind, bigot part of the fandom that just can't help themselves. I mean dumb Percy takes, Annabeth stans ruining Percy's character arcs and overinflating Annabeth's character, which in turn made Rick do the same. Then the boring Jason thing? What the hell was that? It's like everyone missed the point of why Jason is the way he is. I am going to make a post on that soon, but seriously, the shit that's been going on.
Then the shippers. Solangelo stans and Percabeth stans. They have single handedly ruined the ships for me with their distorted ideas of character dynamics. And their blatant and brutal hate against other Percy or Nico ships is just ridiculous and heavily toxic.
It's a fandom, not a monopoly. Everyone can have their own little thing as long as you don't meddle in someone else's own thing. Let everyone enjoy their own thing.
And for all our sakes, at this point, just pick your own version of canon. Choose which books to stop at. Trust me, it's less frustrating that way.

Thalia and Luke in Titans Curse is one of the saddest things to ever happen in the entire Percy Jackson universe.
Luke's plan had been to resurrect Thalia because he believed wholeheartedly that she would side with him and when she didn't he was so scared because he never watched to become Kronos.
Thalia wakes up to her best friend and the love of her life being evil. He poisoned her, tried to kill Annabeth, and betrayed everything that they had together. To make it worse, he practically did it in her name
Throughout the book, she says over and over that Luke NEVER let her down. After everything he did, she still loved him so much and always had the slightest amount of hope that he would come back to her.
And the saddest part is that bc Thalia isn't in BOTL and she didn't make it to the throne room in TLO the last time THEY EVER TRULY SEE EACH OTHER they're trying to kill each other. She pushes him off a cliff, hoping that he'll die, yes because of everything he did but also because if he's dead he can't hurt her anymore.
And then she joins the hunters, yes to avoid turning 16 but also because how could she ever love anyone else as much as she loved him, swearing off men was a no brainer bc the only man she ever loved and trusted let her down in a way that he promised he never would.
This isn't canon, but when you think about it, everything that happened to Luke could've been avoided if Thalia had lived, but instead, he lost her and then spent the next 7 years justifying what he did by saying she would agree. And Thalia only had moments to understand how someone she thought she knew so well would do such things, but also she knows him so she isn't surprised just hurt and praying that maybe it was a misunderstanding.
Anyway... they literally haunt my nightmares bc they had so much potential, they were just doomed by the narrative.

something I tend to forget a lot when reading PJO/HoO is that quests are not destined to succeed. After seeing Percy and his friends succeed quest after quest I kind of forget sometimes that failure is a possibility in Fate's eyes. These are the most powerful demigods of the century, of course they are going to succeed. But Luke failed his quest, Clarisse came 🤏 this close to failing her quest and succeeded because of Percy and his friends' help. Michael Varus failed, though it wasn't HIS quest and that had a lot to do with it. We saw with Luke and Michael Varus what happens when a demigod fails a quest, it's tragic, it hits the camps hard. I almost want to see more of that yk?

PJO spoilers if you haven’t read the books.
Hey guys, so we know that Luke didn’t literally cut a slice through the protective veil in the books. It makes me wonder if maybe that’s going to have something to do with how the veil and Thalia’s tree are hurt in the show’s version of Sea of Monsters. If so, I feel like Luke specifically using backbiter as a way to cut through the veil and arguably Thalia at the same time that Annabeth catches him in the betrayal is just so much more devastating than the way it’s done in the books. Like, he really betrayed them both in one single act. With a sword named Backbiter.

I wonder if part of the reason why Thalia was so ready to kill Luke was to put him out of misery and preserve a bit of the boy she once knew.

that scene in tlo where thalia tells percy he can't start feeling sorry for luke bc luke made his choices. and thalia reveals that the reason they couldn't make it to camp in time for all of them to make it to camp was bc luke kept picking fights. and annabeth never saw this as wrong bc luke was her hero. so thalia had to pick up the pieces. and percy thinking both that luke was put in a cruel position and that luke was putting others in a cruel position. and percy is the only character who understood both sides of luke bc annabeth sees only the best of him and thalia sees only the worst. and that's why percy is the prophecy kid and the one who gives luke the knife. bc annabeth had spent the entire series essentially giving luke the knife when he didn't deserve it. and thalia was never going to give luke the knife. but percy is the only one who can see exactly when luke deserves the knife.

Thalia's point of view must be so surreal because imagine the horror, the tragedy, and the cruelty, of dying... but then not. but you're not alive either. At least, not in the way you used to be. You're more or less caught, trapped, in this liminal state of being. You're still growing... but when you wake up you're not the age you should be. And suddenly, the little seven year old girl you helped protect and cared for and treated as your little sister is practically your age now. And your best friend, a boy that was a mere two years older than you is now a grown man, hardened and distorted by the very hate you saw the beginnings of. that you commiserated with.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY THALIA GRACE!!!
honourary birthday headcanon (because I definitely didn't forget Hazel's bday five days ago, nope, no way):
Luke did Thalia's ear piercings for her. it was at 3am in a McDonald's family bathroom and all they had was a sewing needle and two plastic studs she'd carved with a shard of glass. she was 11 and had never gotten a piercing before; he was 14 and had never held a needle in his life. he cried when the piercing on the left started bleeding. she splashed some hot water on her ear and called it quits.
to this day, she's the only one who knows that this ever happened. neither of them told a soul.

it's 230 am but I literally can't stop thinking about thalia and luke
specifically how it must have felt for thalia to wake up after SIX YEARS of being a tree. like she was 12 when she "died," annabeth was 7, luke was 13, and the 3 of them were a family. they had spent months together and there isn't a doubt in my mind that thalia didn't consider luke her best friend. she sacrificed herself for that boy, her best friend and for baby annabeth
I cant imagine what it felt like, to wake up, learn how much time had passed, see that this little 7 year old is older than you were when you saw her last, and to learn that the person you considered your best friend in the whole world, poisoned you, is evil and has sided with an evil titan.
then actually talking to him and walking away from him bc even though he was so sure she'd side with him, she doesn't. having to walk away bc the boy she loved (platonic or not platonic whatever you think...personally i think they had a thing), the boy she sacrificed herself for isn't the same even though for her, time didn't really pass at all.
and on top of that. having to look at a now 14-year-old annabeth in the face and have to listen to her explain everything she missed. it's terrible
I think about luke and thalia bc even though Luke did a lot of messed up stuff, the worst thing he ever did was what he did to thalia
