Note
For Akainu and Luffy's final fight in the marine dad's au Akainu should nearly kill Luffy then have a flashback to raising Luffy, hesitate, and get kill either by Thatch or Luffy :D.
Oh no, Akainu waited too long, way too long
Luffy's already killed Im and the celestials and the emperors and become the freest man in the world by the time Akainu can catch up to him.
Just napping on a beach somewhere, when he sees Akainu again for the first time since he was locked away in Impel Down. Akainu says Luffy should have never been born, that he was a waste of time and resources and was now the most evil being alive, and so Akainu swore to kill him right then.
"What if I am?" Luffy asks, because he's become everything that he thought would keep him from ever knowing people or seeing places, and yet now he's got a family, a sea of friends and all the freedom in the world to see whatever he pleases. "I am a waste of resources, and when I die all those resources will be given back to the earth they came from. But this time is mine, given to me and taken by me, and I'll use it however I please." He said flippantly, not even bothering more than a glance at Akainu.
And Akainu charged, but it didn't even matter. Luffy dodged him, humored him, but wouldn't fight back - didn't need to. He's fought for his right to family and to slouch and to catch beetles and to laugh, he won't fight for no reason, and Akainu hasn't given him a reason. Not with his harsh words that would have torn apart a tiny desperate isolated Luffy, not with his Magma that burned little ten-year-old Luffy's skin before he learned to turn it to steel on command.
"Why do you want to fight me?" Luffy would ask, and Akainu would give a million different reasons except the right one. "Why do you want to kill me?" Luffy asked without grief, because he was only curious.
"Because your father was the devil!" Akainu barked, and Luffy only tilted his head to the side.
"You were my father, once." He replied. "How are you sure you're not the devil?"
"Because!" Akainu panted, trying to send more attacks Luffy's way, who hasn't broken a sweat. "I stick to my morals, I believe in absolute justice!"
Luffy only hummed. "And I believed in you, but I only got hurt for that." He stopped, and let the magma roll off his haki-covered skin like mud. "Why do you waste your time hurting yourself? Time is all we have."
Akainu fell to his knees with exhaustion. Why? Why? Why? Why was he letting this villain in his head?! He sneered at Luffy.
Luffy didn't react, didn't flinch or straighten or pause, only shrugged and walked away.
Akainu didn't have the strength to follow him.

Trust Issues
Ace knew it was silly. Maybe it was the way he was raised, or the knowledge of what would happen if people learned who his father was. Either way, he had a hard time mentioning his family. Never telling the spades that he had a little brother let alone a bandit for an almost mother. It helped that it never really came up. Not when they were so busy surviving. That and just telling them stories without adding Luffy was easy enough. He just didn’t add the part where Luffy almost got eaten. This didn’t change when he joined the Whitebeard pirates.
No one seemed to mind that he kept his past to himself. That he would finish stories abruptly. I.E. ‘After getting dodging the crocodile I had to kill it fast. So I used all my strength and hit it over the head. It was a good meal.’ After just going into so much detail about the beast’s size and color. No one asked why he played with the kids on every island they went to during his free time. If he wasn’t eating his heart out, that is. A simple ‘I grew up in the jungle.’ Explained away his tracking abilities. It wasn’t like he was lying, just not telling the full truth.
That was until everything was ruined. The den den rang for him. Haruta, who was on duty, called him up to take the call. Everyone looked at him as he took the receiver.
“Hello?”
A soft voice began speaking. “Ace, It’s-“
“HEey… Um, give me a second.” Ace said, taking the snail and all but running away. The Whitebeards watched, wondering who Ace was talking to.
Time passed as they waited. When Ace returned, the phone call was over. Ace handed it back to the person now in charge of the snail. Who tried calling the number back? They were just too curious about it. The number they called, though, went back to their ship. Meaning Ace had called the ship for a couple of seconds to clear the record. The worst part was that he wouldn’t answer any questions about it. Not even pops could get an answer when he asked.
Thatch felt a little down that their youngest didn’t quite trust them yet. He doubted Ace was a marine undercover. Not with how he acted around any marine base they passed. It was like he had a personal vendetta against them. Making their life’s harder rather than just killing them and leaving. It was funny before they knew the boy was hiding things. The thoughts of what, or who, it could have been kept him up.
It was late, and Ace was struggling to sleep. So he did what he always did when it was hard to sleep. Trained on deck. He was trying to learn more control over his observation haki. It would be cool to one up Marco or Izou just once.
Thatch wandered out onto the deck for some fresh air. There he found Ace with a blindfold on and going through the stages of the basic fighting forms. “Hey, what are you still doing up?” Thatch asked as Ace turned to him. Thatch had a brief thought about the haki training.
“Couldn’t sleep.” Ace answered, feeling off still about not being able to see Thatch. He could feel him now with Haki, but it wasn’t the same. He couldn’t watch the way the man’s face or hands twitched with his thoughts. It made Ace’s heart beat just a little faster. His skin growing a little colder.
“Well, training won’t help you. Come on, I’ll make you some coco,” Thatch said, leading the way back.
It was so quiet, and unlike the usually noisy Moby is. Everyone was fast asleep in their beds, minus those that had the night shift. Thatch supposed he should be sleeping, too. “How often do you have trouble sleeping?” Thatch asked, trying to make small talk. All anyone had been talking about was that phone call. Ace might be tired of hearing about it.
Ace shrugged. “Donno, I’m careful not to let it interfere with my duties.”
“I wasn’t saying that. Just wondering if maybe I could help more than just tonight.” Thatch said, the two drifting into silence. Thatch normally wouldn’t mind, but he had too many questions on his mind to keep his mouth shut. “Ace, do you trust us?”
“Yeah, with my life.”
“But not with the lives of your loved ones?”
Ace was quiet for a bit. “It’s not… I just.”
“It’s okay if the answer is no. I know it took me a while to trust those here with the information that I have a little sister. She’s 12 years younger than me. She was five when I left. Still get calls and letters from home. But it was a long time before I told anyone who they were from.” Thatch said, thinking back. He didn’t trust them. Now, being on the other end, he knew how much it hurt. Even when he snapped at the sibling, that wouldn’t let the calls and letters go. He would die for them and pops any day of the weeks.
Ace thought about that for a while. The thought that Thatch was in a similar position wasn’t unthinkable. But it wasn’t the same. “It’s different.” Ace muttered.
“How so?”
“If people learned about… then they would kill them,” Ace muttered, the same fear spiking in his chest. Garp told him during his last visit before he set out. If anyone found out about who his father was and it got out, Dawn would be set a blaze just like his mother’s home island. Nothing could be worse than that.
“Ace, we wouldn’t hurt them.” Thatch said, worrying about who told the boy that. If it was one of their siblings’ practical joke gone bad, he would make sure they paid.
“It’s not you I worry about,” Ace muttered again, taking a long sip of his coco. It shouldn’t be this complicated. Just saying ‘Hey, I have a littler brother that means the world to me. I would die if he ever stopped breathing.’ was easy. But the words never fell from his mouth.
Thatch patted the other on the back. Whatever Ace was thinking had a frown on the boy’s face. Something that Thatch didn’t like seeing on that face. Ace should snare at the world teeth bear or smiling with that cocky little grin. The terrified frown and whatever else was playing in his mind just didn’t fit. Thatch had his answers. Ace trusted them. However, at the end of the day, he was just a scared boy trying to hold on to his loved ones tightly. “Well, tell me about breakfast tomorrow. I was thinking of making eggs and bacon.” The two talked about food and other adventures that Ace wanted to go on. One day, Thatch hoped to learn more about the monsters hiding behind the boy. But now wasn’t the time.

Summary: childhood friends to lovers with the asl trio hc (modern au!)
Characters: Sabo, Portgas D. Ace, Monkey D. Luffy
Notes: Uhhh...I didn’t just write more Sabo and Ace. 🙈 omg I really can’t get enough of these 2. Lol it was hard to write Luffy but I tried my best 😌
━━☆⌒*.
Sabo
Definitely love at first sight. When he first saw you, he wasn’t sure why, but he loves you. Maybe it the way you smiled, or laughed, or your playful eyes. Whatever it was, Sabo has always like you since you were kids.
now seeing how the world isnt perfect, Sabo had only barely got to know you before he was forced to move away to London (idk why London but Oda said that Sabo was British sooo....🤷🏼‍♀️ and like if you live in London or what not just don’t for the sake of the hc 😌)
Of course before he left he made sure to make a secret email so he could still email you and his brothers. Once he got his phone he did not wait to give you his number and call.
because he still lives over sea (assuming that no one reading this lives in England...) the 2 of you would call and text all the time. Text each other good morning and how y’all slept, text through the day about every little thing, and at night the 2 of you would fall asleep on the phone (I completely forgot about the time difference so just ignore it for this)
I can’t even tell you how many time you had your phone taken up and had Ace to steal it back.
even though the 2 of you couldn’t see each other in person, only being able to call and text didn’t seem to stop you 2. You still told each other everything, sent each other memes on Insta, and called when ever you got a chance.
no don’t think that just because Sabo is over seas, Ace doesn’t know about his crush on you. 100% knows about it and 100% teases you about it. You can’t really get mad at him because if it wasn’t for him you wouldn’t have realized your feelings for Sabo
but with Ace knowing about Sabo crush, he made sure to keep other boys away just because he can. Sabo really didn’t ask for it but he’s still greatful anyways.
and so with any boy that has ever like you being scared away by Ace, in your senior year of highschool (Sabo is 2 years older than you so he had to wait until your senior year) Sabo fianlly came out and told you that he liked you. And surprise, surprise you like him too and as soon as those words left your lips, he dropped everything and booked the next flight. He didn’t even tell you here was flying over till he landed.
you, Ace and Luffy wasted no time and drove right to the air port. You definitely made sure to wear your running shoes because you practically sprinted to one side of the air port to the other. As soon as your eyes landed on the blonde, you jumped straight into his arms and didnt let go for a solid 10 minutes.
with sabo now home, of course y’all throw a huge party. How could you not. Literally everyone’s invited. Garp, Daran (she complains, but she happy and everyone knows it), all the straw hats, most of the whitebeard pirates, even Shanks and his crews shows up even though they hardly know Sabo. It’s just a huge party
the party could’ve gone on for days but Sabo still had to get situated. So once the party ended the 2 of you began to unpack his stuff at your house. He came over with practically nothing so it wasn’t hard. And once that’s was done, the 2 of you began to do a bunch of couple-y shit to make up for the time spent apart.
touch starve, both of you, but most Sabo. Always had to be touching you. Whether it’s holding hands, kisses on the cheek , or just hugging. He feels the need to make up for all the years he was away from you.
and you better be ready for surprise dates, like this man will not stop making you feel loved. And in all honesty you could care less about the dates, simply being with him and being able to hug him after so long is all that you need. It doesn’t take a lot for the 2 of you to feel loved at all but just let Sabo spoil you. If you don’t he’ll practically throw a fit. And plus being smothered in kisses isn’t that bad from time to time
omg I so need a fanfic like that 🤧
Portgas D. Ace
At first Ace came out cold to you, just like he did Luffy. When Ace was a child he didn’t think he deserved to be love so he contuined to stay cold but just like Luffy, you didn’t give up. You tried to make conversation and play with him and sooner or later he did come around to you.
But what really sparked his so called curiosity with you was when Sabo had told you who his dad was and you simply shrugged it off, saying, “his dad has nothing to with Ace. As far as I’m consered he’s dad’s irrelevant at this point.” It was bold for you to say but Ace liked that. From there on out there aways seemed to be a glow that followed you, like a spot light.
Ace knows everything about you, even the things you don’t know. He doesn’t do it to be creepy he just couldn’t stop thinking about you. Ace knows your favorite color that changes every 3 months, how you like your pizza, how you always sleep talk, how you have a bad habit of speaking before you think and how you bite the inside of your cheek when your nervous, and how you dig your nails into your palms when your angry
He’s know you inside out and he really doesn’t mean it in a creepy way. It’s just hard to not watch you when your caught his attention. Now all throughout elementary school and middle school he didn’t think much of it. But once he was a freshmen in highschool and you were a 7th grader, and boys began to take interest in you that’s when he finally figured out: he was in love with you
of course, he had a little help from Sabo. Sabo’s best friends with Ace, how could he not notice? He thought it would be best to let Ace figure out that unknown feeling himself, seeing how Ace’s has never once thought about it. But as soon as Ace was able to figure out his feelings, Sabo was right there ready to help him out
It wasn’t hard, really. You were right by Ace when he slowly came out of his shell thanks to Whitebeard and his crew who took Ace in. And once you saw how lively and happy he got it was hard not to fall in love with him. Now that hard part was trying get together
Thatch was the the one who ended up actually getting you 2 together with the help of Sabo and Koala. Now of course, they waited until your senior year of highschool so things weren’t weird and then the plan was set into motion.
If the 2 of you had to be honest, you don’t even remember how it happened. You 2 just started dating The plan was all over the place, so the 2 of you just decided to tell each other you like them. And then boom, the 2 of you were a couple.
So like everyone always knows this but Ace won’t care of the relationship of the other one doesn’t love back. With his past he needs to know that he is loved, so while he always spoil you in kisses and acts like he is the giver in the relationship, you know well enough that he’s a receiver. You don’t mind at all anyways, seeing the fluster look at his face, is enough for you.
But that doesn’t means he does plan surprise dates, or random gifts. The relationship you 2 have is very balanced, nothing ever feels to overbearing. And I know I say this a lot but dating Ace is the best thing to ever happen
Monkey D. Luffy
Honestly the 2 of you probably met at some random park. You don’t even know how it happened. One minute you playing on the play ground, next thing you know your walking in the woods with a random boy that was about your age.
You couldn’t really complain though, the playground was getting boring and being pulling along for an adventure wasn’t bad. While on the adventure you were able to learn, surprisingly a lot about the boy. But the big take away is that his name is Luffy, he’s got 2 bigger brothers, and is around 7, about 2 years younger than you.
Definitely ended up spending the whole day with him in the woods. Y’all did everything from climbing trees, finding rare beetles, fighting animals, and playing in the ponds. You hardly met this kid yet and yet you had more fun than any other friend you met. By the time y’all headed back it was practically nighttime and, although he probably didn’t do it internationally, Luffy ended up walking you all the way to you house.
Before you could even knock on the door, your parents swung open the door and engulfed you into a crying hug while also scolding you at the same time. They were definitely giving off mixed emotions. From there, Luffy let out a loud laugh and ran off, waving by to his new friend. From that day forwards, you seemed to always be caught up in some mess with him. Y’all would meet at the park, at school, at stores, just any place where the 2 of you could have any type of fun.
This went on for a while, the 2 of you would adventure off to the woods, until Luffy’s brothers began to ask who you were. That’s when Luffy finally decided to take you to his house. It’s not that he didn’t want to take you before it’s just that he thought it would be more fun to go other places. But once Luffy brought you to his house, Dadan, the lady you learned who was taking care of them, practically had a heart attack. Seeing anything kid was the last thing she wanted. You had to tell her like 10 times that you were just here to hang out with Luffy.
It’s not like it mattered though, you were already with him so it was really like Dadan had to take care of you. But just like the other boys she definitely came around to like you. And of course, Ace and Sabo came around to like you. How could they not? It wasn’t everyday that a girl would hang out with them. Whether or not he wants to admit it, Sabo had a small crush on you. But it didn’t last long after seeing your relationship with Luffy.
The think about Luffy is that he’s not gonna know he has a crush or even realize it on his own. He doesn’t really care that much. He knows all about dating and love and the birds and the bees, he just doesn’t care as much. So Luffy didn’t notice his crush on you until you brought it up. And even once you brought it up, not much changed between you 2. Not because he doesn’t like you he just doesn’t see what’s the difference between being friends and dating.
You ended up telling him you liked him early on but you didn’t want to actually get into anything until high school. So you waited until sophomore year then you asked Luffy to date you. Of course he got a push from Ace and Sabo but Luffy was gonna say yes anyways. And thus, the 2 of you began dating.
Dating Luffy is kinda a challenge. He not one to pick up on the little things or signals, so most of the time you have to tell him straight forwards. Whether you want a kiss, a hug, or to go on a date. Although the 2 of you are dating, Luffy acts how he was before beacuse he doesn’t see how the relationship changed much. He doesn’t do it to hurt or upset you, it’s just how he sees it.
And although you have to tell Luffy what you want most of the time. Dating Luffy is surprisingly easy, too. Depending on what it is, Luffy could either be a challenge or not. Beacuse you have to tell Luffy everything communication is really strong between the 2 of you. The both of you also trust each other very much. Because Luffy doesn’t just build relationships with anyone. Once the relationship starts though, you can expect him to be very trustworthy and reliable. Luffy adores all the friendships he makes, so he’ll never befriend someone who he doesn’t trust.

                                                                  ☩
You watched the guard check the chains for the fourth time with an amused grin on your face. He pulled it, hit it, and almost wet his pants with the effort.
The funnier part was that he did all of that while trying to stay as far from you as possible.
¨So, am I getting company?¨ no answer, just a glance and a drop of sweat falling down his temple ¨Will you tell me who´s my guy?¨ he ignored you again and left.
A few minutes later, you heard the lame sound of chains echoing throughout the cold walls. You had a minute to process the silent and compliant steps before the rest of the prisoners started to yell wildly.
You observed the shadow of your new cellmate projected onto the filthy floor. Then his dirty feet when he walked by you, giving yourself the trouble to look up only when he took a seat while the guards locked him.
You let out a disdained scoff and waited for ¨privacy¨ to talk to him. He, on the other hand, never bothered to look up.
¨I would offer you something to eat, but as you can see, my hands are tied.¨ you shook the chains, hoping that the distasteful joke would make the man lift his head.
But he showed no reaction to your words. Instead, he remained leaned forward with his head down.
 You snorted heavily.
¨You know, I was kind of hoping to be the only Whitebeard pirate around here.¨
 That was more than enough to make him face you. His narrowed eyes watched you for a moment, trying to recollect your features in his memory.
¨Oh, come on. Did I really change that much?¨
¨Y/N!¨ he shouted and tried to fight the strains.
¨How are you doing, Flame boy?¨
                                                           ☩
The heart beating inside of your chest felt like it was going to jump out of your mouth at any moment. Although you were sweating, all of the ice around you made you wish you had more clothes.
 How could you be cold and sweating at the same time?
Everyone had their eyes on you. Well, not only you. But the entire troupe that fell from the sky altogether with a marine warship, the weirdest circus freaks brought directly from Impel Down. Your home for the last two years.
As soon as Luffy stepped on the ice field and started to attack marines in order to reach Ace, the real beginning of the battle began to seethe in Marineford.
You joined your fugitives comrades and jumped out the ship, but differently than the straw hat boy, you ran to the opposite side. Dodging every marine in your way to get to the Moby Dick.
Whitebeard looked at you like a proud father and let out his legendary ´Gurarara´ laugh while the Commanders stared at you as if you were a ghost.
Not that you didn´t actually look like one. Even for them, who always considered you to be one of the prettiest women they have ever seen, you looked a little bit mistreated.
Your hair was dirty and messy, your always radiant skin was dry, and the bags under your eyes were deeper and darker.
If it wasn´t for the look in your eyes, they wouldn´t have recognized you.
The spark and shine remained stoic. The will to live and to fight remained standing strong, even though the rest of you seemed to be brumbling apart.
Marco stood on Pops' right side, still showing the same anger in his eyes as when you said that you were leaving the Whitebeard Pirates. But you couldn´t focus on that. You were too busy trying not to get killed to care about his attitude.
And more importantly, you were so happy.
Every night for two years, you prayed for the chance to see them again, to brew saké among your family, and laugh in their companies. It was so close you could feel it in your fingertips.
¨Daughter, you don´t look healthy.¨ Whitebeard said when you reached the ship.
¨I guess feeding me wasn´t on the top of their list of priorities, Pops.¨ you laughed.
¨And I suppose you met the troublemaker over there.¨
¨We were cellmates, can you believe it?¨ Marco peeped into your conversation, trying to look like he didn´t care ¨He was updating me on the current Whitebeard Pirate´s activities. Said you got yourself some pretty cute nurses.¨
You elbowed him slightly in the leg, and the Emperor gave his staccato laugh you missed so much.
¨Daughter,¨ he spoke more serious ¨I know it´s a lot to ask of you right now... but we need to get that boy outta here. You´re in?¨
¨Have you forgotten who I am, Pops?¨ He smirked, already knowing your answer ¨ Of course, I´m in.¨
You looked each commander in the eyes, in a silent agreement that when this madness was over, you would answer all their questions. When they looked back at you, nothing had changed. For them, you were still the same Y/N from years ago.
                                                             ☩
¨I can´t believe Pops wants to keep that brat.¨
¨We should have him thrown off of the ship.¨
¨You should cook him for dinner, Thatch!¨
You couldn´t hold the smile bending on your lips when you heard the Division Commanders talking about the rookie Pops had brought onboard.
The kid had been trying to kill him for a while now. Even Jinbe had to step in and engaged in a 5-day battle with the young pirate. That, for some reason, got Whitebeard´s interest.
You felt a warm hand embrace yours and turned to see the First Division Commander take his seat on your side. You smiled when he leaned over and gave you a habitual kiss, the kind you share when you wake up in the morning or when you meet up in the halls.
But your heart ached behind your smile. Because, although it was something usual for him, something that he would do thousands of times for the rest of his life, for you, it could be the last.
You were about the destroy everything you two had and break his heart.
But you were out of options. You knew that, and so did Whitebeard.
When the first part of the meeting ended, and Pops had explained his motives to want to keep the hot-headed boy, someone questioned him about the second topic they needed to discuss. The one he kept as a secret even from Marco.
Your heart pounded faster, and your face heated. Whitebeard frowned and gestured something, giving you the word. The weight of the sixteen commanders staring at you made you shrug and hold Marco´s hand tighter.
¨Y/N?¨ he called you with a tone of concern in his voice.
You just avoided making eye contact with him. You couldn´t face him.
¨I, uh...¨ you raised your head and stuffed your chest. You had to be cold. ¨I-I am going on a solo mission... and I am not coming back.¨
The room went totally silent for a few seconds before they began to bombard you with questions and inquires, to which you could not respond. Marco, on the other hand, remained speechless, waiting for you to tell him that it was a joke.
¨I, uh...¨ someone interrupted you ¨I am leaving tomorro-¨ another Commander cut you ¨... tomorrow morni-¨
The blast of Whitebeard´s cleaving blade hitting the floor made all of you shut.
¨The decision was made!¨ his thunderous voice cracked the wooden walls ¨And blessed.¨
Marco shot up, his chair met the floor in a loud thud. ¨Pops, you approved this?!¨
¨Son...¨ the First Division Commander scowled and started to walk out of the room.
You reached him and held his hand to stop him. He turned, staring at you furiously.
¨Marco...¨
¨Why, yoi?!¨
You shook your head, not being able to tell him what he wanted to know. Tears began to fill your eyes when he pulled his hand from your grip and left the room.
A single tear made its way down your cheek and you quickly wiped it. You couldn't turn back on your decision. Even if that made the love of your life hate you.
¨Y/N...¨ Thatch touched your arm softly ¨Are you in trouble?¨
You attempted to give him your best warm smile.
¨When am I not in trouble, Thatchy?¨
The next day when you were saying goodbye to your family, everyone was there, even the Fire-Fist boy.
 Everyone but the person you needed the most to be there.
Every Commander hugged you tight, saying that if you ever decided to come back, your chair among them would be waiting.
You tried to hold your tears in the beginning, but that became an impossible task.
Pops held you close to his chest and suffered with you, for he knew the sacrifice you were about to make. And even a man like him couldn´t avoid it.
His voice roared through the four Blues when he declared, loud and clear, that you were his daughter and would be forever a Whitebeard pirate.
¨I love you guys. I love you, Pops.¨ you looked around, searching for your boyfriend ¨I guess he´s not coming, so... tell Marco I will always love him.¨
When you stood alone on the seashore, you waited. You waited until the Moby Dick disappeared on the horizon. You waited for Marco to have a change of heart and fly over to you, saying that he loved you and he would miss you.
But he never did.
                                                             ☩
What happened was that you were a little rusted.
You got tired faster and weren´t as agile as before. So you preferred to keep yourself out of the line of fire, where you would disturb more than help. Your job was to back up the Division Commanders and make sure they would keep a clean path for Ace´s brother.
You wanted to be thrilled with the adrenaline of a battlefield, but you were scared. Every time Whitebeard stopped and put his hand on his chest, you feared.
That was the reason why you turned yourself in in the past, the reason why you didn´t ask him to fight for you.
He saved as much energy as possible for this war, but you knew he had started to die the minute he disconnected himself from the life support.
¨What are you up to, old man?¨ you mumbled to yourself.
Before you could do or think anything else, a sharp scream took your attention. Kizaru hit Marco with laser beams, and you noticed another Marine Officer approaching him with sea stone cuffs.
You grabbed a gun and ran towards them. Even rusted, you were incredibly fast. With an impulse, you jumped and grabbed Marco by the collar, shooting the marine with Haki-imbued bullets.
But again, too late.
Perhaps years ago, you would have been able to prevent this from happening, but at that moment, all you could do was get him out of Kizaru's sight, causing his laser to hit you in the thigh.
You turned in the air, changing your position so that he fell on you when you landed. In that battle, his life was worth more than yours, and it was your duty to offer support to the Commanders - your Commander, especially. His body had already gone through a lot of stress, and the sea stone handcuffs prevented him from using his powers.
You tried to muffle the scream when you hit the floor.
¨You ok?¨ you asked.
With so much of a glimpse he put himself to his feet, ignoring you and the blood he spilled before running back to the mess.
From that moment on, the situation got really bad, really quick. You went berserk, killing the marines like a freaking calamity. Your thigh was gushing blood, deep gashes covered your body, and your heart was torn apart.
Because despite all of your effort and sacrifice, the mission failed.
You didn´t see what had happened, but the person you were supposed to rescue, Ace, the Second Division Commander, was dead on the floor. And his brother was having a breakdown.
Ace had a peaceful smile on his face, and you thought that it would have been nice to get to know him better.  From the days you shared a cell, you understood why Pops wanted to keep him. He was a pretty nice guy, after all.
                                                            ☩
¨And how did you end up here?¨ Ace asked you.
¨Remember the solo mission thing?¨ he nodded, and you gave him a ´ta-dah face.
Suddenly, he got pale.
¨This... This is where you´ve been for the past two years? Why?¨
You hummed, pondering over your words.
¨I know things about the World Government that I shouldn´t. And when they found out, I got an ultimatum... I could turn myself in, or they would have thrown a buster call on us.¨
¨Y-You sacrificed yourself? But you know Pops could have handled it, right? We all could have handled it.¨
You smiled at him, deciding not to tell him the ugly truth.
The World Government knew about your knowledge regarding the Ancient Weapons and the National Treasure of Marie Geoise for a long time, but they waited to get to you. They waited until they had the perfect chance, and Whitebeard´s illness was just it.
At the beginning of his illness, he didn´t have the proper medication and life support devices, so he was vulnerable. Still stronger than all of you together but too vulnerable to deal with the Admirals and the CP-Zero.
When you took Whitebeard´s hand and accepted to be his daughter, you swore your loyalty to him, you vowed to protect your family even if it cost your life.
¨Yeah, I guess this one is on me.¨
After listening to everything he had told you, you knew Whitebeard would use the public execution to rescue him. He would not let anyone take another child of his.
That was the reason why you couldn´t tell Ace about your father´s state - not that he didn´t know, but he could be oblivious. And he would be crushed with guilt if anything happened to your old man.
¨Hum, but tell me, kid. Any chance the phoenix had already forgiven me?¨
You saw your answer in his awkward look.
¨He didn´t know about this as well, right?¨ Ace opened and closed his mouth a couple of times ¨He thought you had bailed on us when Pops needed you the most and... he still likes you, Y/N. He´s just hurt.¨
¨Yeah... okay...¨ you whispered.
¨If you´re right... and Pops comes to rescue me, I´ll let everyone know you´re here. And we´ll come to rescue you.¨
Your nose burned with the feeling of crying. Even with his powers restrained by the sea stone cuffs, he was so warm.
¨Well... I could use another day in the sun.¨ and you sobbed.
                                                             ☩
But there was no sun.
There was no sun, and your father, together with Ace and thousands of your allies, were gone.
And the dream of brewing saké with your family, you did reach it, but couldn´t hold it.
When he opened a crater on the ground, separating him from his crew, you stood beside him, begging him to reconsider
¨Pops, don´t do this...¨ you whined, choking on your own tears ¨I-I just came back...¨
He looked at you in the eyes and wiped your tears.
¨My daughter...  I´m sorry I failed you.¨ You shook your head and held his huge hand ¨I know you´ll take care of the boys. Your room and your seat remain untouched.¨
You couldn´t say anything else before he threw you on the other side.
Now the Red Hair Pirates were collecting Whitebeard and Ace´s bodies to assist with the funeral. Jozu scooped you in his amrs and carried you back to the ship as you cried. He walked you to your old room and put you in the bed, leaving without a word.
Inside of your cabin, you raged, not wanting to accept the fate of things. You punched the walls until your knuckles bled, you cried until your throat hurt and wished to go back in time, when you were in your dirty cell, and Whitebeard was still alive.
When do you think people die?
When they are shot through the heart by the bullet of a pistol?
When they are ravaged by an incurable disease?
No. It’s when… they are forgotten.
When the sun began to fall, you got up from the cold woodboard and reached the door, making your way to the deck.
The Commanders and the rest of the crew were scattered around, mourning their losses. The family was falling apart, and this time Pops wasn´t there to glue the pieces back together.
I know you´ll take care of the boys.
His words echoed in your head.
You watched the hundreds of men injured, bleeding through their wounds and passing out unattended. Where was the man in charge?
A sudden anger consumed you, and you rushed to his room, kicking the door open.
¨What the fuck do you think you´re doing?!¨ he didn´t answer, nor did he move.
Marco looked miserable, sitting on the mattress, leaning forward with both hands on his head.
You had a lot of emotions going on in your head.
You were happy because you got to hear Whitebeard call you daughter one last time, but you didn´t know how to live in a world where he didn´t.
You were happy to be with your family again, but it killed you to see them crumbled like that.
¨Not now.¨ he spoke when you approached with calmer steps. His voice was hushed and broken.
¨Marco, you have to-¨
¨Get out, yoi.¨
¨No. You are the one getting out and help-¨
¨GET THE HELL OUT, Y/N!¨ he roared.
¨NO!¨ you roared back and pulled him by his collar, facing his teary and red eyes. ¨YOU TURNED YOUR BACK TO ME ONCE, BUT I WON´T LET YOU DO THE SAME TO THEM!¨
You let go of him and shed heavy tears.
¨You have thirteen Commanders and hundreds of men out there who need you. So suck it and step in.¨ you said with gritted teeth.
¨They can handle themselves, yoi.¨ he grumbled.
You scowled
¨Is this how far your loyalty goes?¨ he clenched his fists ¨Pops offered you a seat on his side, and you took it! NOW USE IT!¨
¨SHUT UP! YOU DON´T KNOW THE THINGS WE´VE BEEN THROUGH, Y/N!¨ he marched towards you, stopping a few inches from you and yelling in your face ¨You have no idea the things we´ve lost, the things I have lost!¨
¨I do know!¨ you pushed his chest ¨I have always known, but you didn´t! You didn´t because you´re Marco, the Phoenix! And you´re great! Great rare, mythical Devil Fruit. Great First Division Commander. YOU. ARE. GREAT.¨ you sobbed, helpless ¨But being great didn´t make you confident, it made you spoiled. It made you forget what loss feels like. And now you lost. We lost.¨
He let himself fall on the mattress again, head down, tears dropping on his ragged pants.
¨So you don´t get to drown yourself in commiseration, Marco. You don´t get to sit here, feeling sorry for yourself.¨ your voice came out weak ¨They need you. I... need you.¨
You watched him for a couple of minutes but seeing that he wouldn´t move, you sighed, ready to leave the room and do his job.
¨I hated you, yoi.¨ Marco said before you could leave..
¨I know.¨ you whispered and leaned against the door.
More tears fell.
Two years in Impel Down were not enough to break you, but that... that was a difficult hit to take.
¨All these years, I hated you every single day.¨
¨I know.¨
¨Even when I thought you were dead, I hated you.¨
¨I know.¨
¨And when Pops told me what you did for him... I hated myself.¨
The both of you broke down.
¨I know, Marco.¨
You turned slowly and walked to him, sitting by his side, laying your head on his shoulder.
His shaky hands held yours, and you weakened, feeling the touch you missed so much.
¨I can´t do this, Y/N.¨
¨Yes, you can.¨ you touched his face gently, so he would look at you ¨We can.¨
You slipped to the floor, holding each other in your arms, hoping that the tears would wash away the pain, the guilt, and regret.

Laser Tag
Summary: Ace and Sabo go to Laser Tag together with a few friends and Luffy. Things happen and needless to say Sabo is a little shit and Ace is a flustered mess.
Relationship:  Sabo and Ace
Tags: make out/slightly heavy make out
Notes: While I was dealing with some medical issues, I asked @lovelybutnot-ablankcanvas to give me a prompt to write while I was waiting for some answers. And they send a prompt of
“Take me laser tagging and then push me into a corner and kiss me. Then shoot me and walk away.”
This was the result :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was actually Sabo’s idea to go to Laser Tag. Ace wasn’t against it, it seemed fun and honestly he’s always wanted to go. They invited a few others to tag along, Luffy was first since he was in the room with them when they made the plan. The others being Thatch, Izo, and Koala. Izo didn’t want to go at first but Thatch convinced him somehow. They did try to get Marco to come along, but he had work and wouldn’t be able to make it.
At the laser tag building, Sabo and Ace were waiting at the entrance for everyone to get there. Luffy had already went inside to play some of the arcade machines scattered around the place. Ace was on his phone, leaning against Sabo who had his arm resting around Ace’s shoulders.
“Just got a text from Thatch, they should be here soon since they got Koala a couple of minutes ago.” Ace explains and Sabo hums, gently rubbing the freckled mans shoulder.
“Sounds good. I bet Luffy’s going nuts in there waiting to run around in the arena.”
“I’m sure he’s ok. He has plenty of games to keep him company, I’m just worried about the mini food court. It ain’t gonna last long with us three in there.” Sabo couldn’t help but grin at his boyfriends comment. Knowing it’s so true.
“Better hope Thatch is bringing snacks. While me and you are bad, Luffy is a whole other problem.” Ace laughs at this, leaning closer into Sabo’s side.
“He’s the reason why we need a damn bank account dedicated to food cost.”
“And one for medical bills…” Ace just rolls his eyes at that.
“He’s such an accident hazard..” Sabo rubs his face at just thinking of the amount of times Luffy has ended up with a broken bone or needing stitches.
“Hey guys!!” Looking over they see Thatch, Izo, and Koala walking over to them, Thatch waving at them. Ace waves back, but doesn’t move out of his spot next to Sabo.
“You guys didn’t have to wait out here for us. Where’s Luffy??” Koala asks once they get over.
“Inside playing at the arcade, it was better than him sitting with us and risk him running off to do who knows what.” Ace explains and the others laugh. He pulls away from Sabo’s side, but takes his hand to replace the contact. The group starts to head inside and to the floor Laser Tag was on, having some small talk about things that have happened at work and such. Once inside Ace looks around for their brother, praying the boy didn’t do anything stupid when they were away. Luckily he was just sitting on top of the race car games. Letting go of Sabo’s hand, he heads over to Luffy.
“Go get our rounds set up while I get Luffy.” He calls out to Sabo, getting a ‘alright’ before getting close to Luffy.
“Yo Luffy, you ready for some Laser Tag?” Luffy instantly jumped up at this with a large grin.
“Hell yea let’s go!” Luffy jumps off the fake bike an grabs Ace by the arm, dragging him over to the others at the counter.
“Jeez Luffy relax! You haven’t been waiting that long!” Ace protests but goes nothing to pull his arm away from his little brother. Once at the counter Sabo looks over and chuckles at them.
“Excited Luffy?”
“Yea!! This is gonna be so fun, come on let’s go!” Luffy starts running for the entrance but both Sabo and Ace grab him before he can.
“Hold on Luffy, we still have to wait for our time.” Sabo explains, holding up some small papers in his hand.
“How long do we have to wait??” Luffy tilts his head with a pout. Sabo chuckles and ruffles his hair gently.
“We only have to wait a few more minutes, the next game is very soon you just have to wait a little longer ok?” Sabo hugs Luffy to calm him, but also to make sure he didn’t run off. Luffy, still pouting, returns the hugs regardless and cuddled against the blond. Ace just rolls his eyes but smiles at them, pulling his boyfriend and brother close for a group hug.
They wait a couple of minutes to be called and then are lead into a small room with a bunch of other people to play. The workers there explain how to play the game and how to put on the vests and how to work the guns. They explains how you can pick names for your vests and change the colors as well. Once everything was explained then the workers opened the door to the room with all the vests, letting everyone inside.
Sabo grabs a vest with a blue color to it, while Luffy grabbed a yellow one. Koala followed Sabo’s lead and grabbed a blue one. Thatch, Izo, and Ace all grabbed a red colored vest, thinking it would be fun to be on a team since Luffy wanted to be on yellow alone. They get in line to change their names, the others just used the normal names while the brothers used fun names. Ace went by “Fire Fist”, Luffy went by “Straw Hat”, and Sabo went by “Blue Dragon”. Once all the names were given they all rush inside and split up, going to different areas and corners of the arena.
Ace waits alone in a corner hidden away from everyone for the countdown to begin. He split up from Thatch and Izo cuz he wanted to go wild and run around without having to worry about losing them. He heard the countdown start and he grins, peeking around the corner from where he was to see if anyone was around. He heard others running up and down the slopes and halls, it was dark but still illuminated by the black lights around the arena. The moment the countdown stops, Ace smirks and runs out from his hiding place.
Running around the corner he sees a group with their back turned to him, they were colored orange and Ace instantly starts shooting at them. When one of the vests shuts down and beeps, the other two freak out and turn to shoot him, but he got them instantly before running off.
Ace runs around shooting everyone he sees that’s a different color. It might be his first time but he thinks he’s doing pretty good, and having a blast while at it. Suddenly the freckled man sees Luffy jumping OFF the second story platform to the first and he nearly heart attack.
“LUFFY DON’T FUCKING JUMP OFF TO THE FIRST FLOOR!” Ace yelled out to him, shooting him and making Luffy’s vest shut down for a little bit as payback for scaring him half to death. Luffy just laughs and keeps running off.
“SORRY ACE!~” He then turned a corner and was gone. Ace just huffed and went back to running and shooting people he saw. Thinking up ways to kick Luffy’s ass once they were home.
Running past a secluded hall with small but deep rooms imbedded into it, Ace wasn’t paying attention much since he didn’t hear anyone around him. But then his vest was grabbed and he let out a yell as he was pulled back into one of the rooms and slammed against the wall. He was about to shout and kick the person pinning him against the wall with the body, till he sees it was Sabo with a large smirk. Ace’s body relaxed and huffed.
“Fuckin hell Sabo why did you grab me like that?” Sabo just let out a soft laugh and wrapped an arm around Ace’s waist.
“Aw lighten up Ace.. come on you’ve been running around all this time.. and we still have about half an hour left so why don’t we take a few minutes and relax together..” Sabo gently places a kiss onto Ace’s lips with a grin. Ace gives Sabo a questioning look. Neither of them needed a break, they could go on for hours and barely break a sweat. But who was he to deny alone time with his boyfriend?
“Alright then Sabo.. What do you have in mind to ‘relax’ hm?” Despite it being very dark, lightly illuminated by the black light in the hall, Ace could see Sabo’s grin grow. He nudges Ace’s head to the side when he went and gently starts kissing at Ace’s neck. The ebony lets out a small sigh and relaxes against him, closing his eyes, as Sabo keeps kissing his neck.
The blond trails small kisses up his neck, lightly biting at it before placing soft kisses on his jaw and cheek. He pulls away slightly before presses a kiss to Ace’s lip again. Ace hums against his lips bringing his hands up and threading them through Sabo’s blond locks, tugging at them lightly.
The kiss gets heated fairly quickly once Sabo tugs at Ace’s lip lightly and Ace just opens his mouth for the other. Sabo pushes his leg in between Ace’s and grinds against him lightly, causing out to let out a small moan. Ace was glad no one was running down these halls all too often, he didn’t want to deal with the staff finding out about this. Not that they cared if they were found, it would just be annoying.
Pulling Sabo deeper into the kiss by tugging his hair a little harder, getting a small noise from Sabo clearly enjoyed it. It was going like that for a while that Ace was so focused on it and unaware about their surroundings.
Till he heard a gun go off and his vest make a loud beeping noise. Ace full on stops and snaps his eyes open, feeling Sabo’s lips slowly grow into a smirk. Sabo pulled away from the kiss with the biggest shit eating grin against his lips.
“Thanks for the points babe.. Maybe we can finish this later at home yea?~” Sabo ducked in quickly and bite Ace’s neck fairly hard in his sensitive spot, causing him to let out a small yelp. Then Sabo instantly ran out of the small room and down the hall.
Ace was in shock for a second, blushing brightly and a hand on his neck where Sabo bit him. That was, till rage took him over and he bolted right after Sabo, holding his gun as he ran.
“SABO I’M GOING TO KICK YOUR KICKING ASS!!”
The rest of the time everyone heard angry yelling and loud laughter.
~~
After the game Ace was still chasing after Sabo all around the Laser Tags Arcade area. Sabo got first place but Ace somehow got dead last.
But Ace got his revenge later that night when the two were home alone. Needless to say Sabo had a hard time walking for a couple of days.
Read All About It - an Ace/Oc fanfic - Chapter 10
The dining room was packed with crew members eager for dinner. Thatch was a good cook and Ashina was thankful that was something they gained by joining Whitebeard. The spread of meat, bread, roasted vegetables, and sweets that covered the tables was overwhelming. The room was loud, filled with laughter and chatter from multiple conversations. They had slowly begun to make friends with some of their new crew and many of their original members were scattered around the room at various tables.
Ashina sat between Ace and Deuce, and Marco, Thatch, and Izo sat across from them.
“So, Red, any chances of you ditching Fire Fist for a real man?” Thatch teased. He was a shameless flirt, and his favorite pastime was to aggravate Ace by trying to lure her away from him. Seeing as he never hit on her without Ace around, Ashina took it all in fun.
Even though she shot him down, he succeeded every time in making flames appear on Ace’s shoulders. If his comment was lewd enough, his whole back would blaze. This time only small flames danced on Ace’s shoulders. Deuce thought it was hilarious every time and laughed loudly.
“Not gonna happen, Thatch,” she said. Her free hand sliding to grip Ace’s thigh and the other bringing a forkful of carrot to her mouth.
“Damn. Will you still spar with me?”
“Maybe, I like kicking your ass.”
Thatch grinned, and went to say something else but Marco interrupted. “How did you two meet?”
Ace laughed and Ashina turned to scowl at him as he answered, “I ruined her mission and then had to save her.”
“You did not have to save me!” she smarted back.
Ace just grinned. “You were surrounded.”
“And I was doing just fine before you sounded the alarm, Flame Boy. I could have gotten off the island all by myself.”
“No way. Those Marines would have encircled you again just like they did to us at the docks. You needed my help.”
Ashina rolled her eyes. “No, I didn’t, but you keep thinking that Fire Fist. Had you not set a building on fire I would have never been noticed. No need for saving when you’re in and out under the Marine’s noses.”
“Sneaky little thing aren’t you?” Izo said. “And you have Haki. Hmm.”
“Where did you learn to fight, Ace? You possess incredible strength even without your Devil Fruit powers,” Marco asked.
“I grew up in Goa Kingdom with my two brothers, Luffy and Sabo. It was full of huge animals we fought all the time growing up. And Gramps used to drop by every now and then for some really tough training.”
“Gramps?”
“Oh, my grandpa. Garp.”
“Garp the Fist is your grandfather?” Izo half shouted, but no one else seemed to pay any mind to them.
Ace just shrugged. “Yeah, adoptive, but yeah.”
“Damn. No wonder you’re strong. What about you Ashina? Who taught you to fight? You have some wicked martial arts skills.”
“My mother,” she answered Marco.
“Haki?”
“Also, my mother,” she said with a smile. “I learned my sword fighting mostly from my father. We would train together whenever he came to visit.”
“You ever fight with Fire Fist?”
“We’ve spared, but I haven’t tried to kill him.”
“Ah, what?” Ace sputtered.
“Oh come on, Ace. I have Haki, I can touch you even when you turn to flame. I just need to get my arms around your neck and bam, K.O.”
Marco, Deuce, and Izo laughed, but Thatch sat pondering. “You know,” he said after a minute. “I bet she could. She’s quick.” Thatch looked to her seriously. “When we fought, if you hadn’t moved your left foot, then I would never have been able to get the upper hand and pin you. She held her own up until then.”
“Withstood Pop’s Haki blast, too, even if he wasn’t using his full power,” Izo added.
Ashina snorted. “Kind of glad he didn’t. Took a lot to stay on my feet that night.”
“What did you do before you met Ace? He said he interrupted your mission,” Marco mused.
“Oh,” Ashina smiled proudly. “I was a Revolutionary. I’ve trained and learned from some very powerful people the last four years.”
“Well… damn… A Revolutionary Pirate… what’d you know,” Thatch chuckled. “Paired with the Mera Mera user you’re a powerful addition to the crew.”
“The Missus has a high bounty,” Deuce commented.
“Missus?” Thatch screeched, eyes widening. “You’re married!”
Ashina rolled her own eyes, laughing. “No. It’s a nickname the crew gave me, and then part of the shitty epithet the marines came up with.”
“Uh huh.” Thatch looked between her and Ace, scrutinizing, before he finally turned to Marco. “How come the Rookie gets lucky enough to have a missus?”
Marco and Izo just laughed at his expense and eventually Ace, Ashina, and Deuce joined in.
.
.
.
The room was gradually becoming theirs. After a few stops at different islands Ashina had managed to replenish her wardrobe and find a few items to decorate the room. The rest of their belongings were still on the Spadille, which was anchored at the supply island where they had lost the fight to Whitebeard.
New, royal blue bedding covered the bed and a large wood and iron trunk sat at the foot of the bed. Ashina wanted to find another mirror and a new tapestry. They didn’t have window, but the assortment of candles and lanterns lit up the space in a warm glow in the late evening.
Ashina brushed her hair and then slipped on the short nightgown. This one was a pale blue cotton and stopped just below her backside. It was soft and hugged her curves, and she was eager for Ace to see it.
He wasn’t in their room yet, so she slipped on the knee length, pale pink robe. The soft cotton had purple and white flowers stitched along the edges. She tied the sash around her waist and padded out of the room barefoot. Having a feeling she knew where she’d find him, if he wasn’t having a narcoleptic episode somewhere, she headed for the deck. As she neared the bow, she spotted him at the front side, where they used to stand together on the Spadille. His eyes were focused on the star spackled sky, oblivious to Thatch and Marco watching him from around the side of the captain’s quarters.
Ashina strolled past them and headed for Ace. When she reached his side, she leaned in to his warmth and he instantly pulled her closer. His arm stayed around her waist and his fingers made circles on her hip. He held out his other palm, letting a flame dance and grow. She cupped her hands, warming them to his fire, as she leaned further into his chest.
“Do you trust me?” he whispered.
Ashina took her eyes away from the little flame to look into his gray ones. “Yes. I follow you, Ace. No matter what you choose to do. I trust you, Commander,” she purred.
“I’m not a Commander yet,” he replied softly.
She knew it was that choice, the ability to become the Second Division Commander, that kept him awake. “I don’t think you’ve made a bad decision yet.”
The little flame vanished and his warm fingers tilted her head up. He slowly lowered his mouth to hers and kissed her. It was tender, gentle, and it said more than any words ever could. He pulled back and his eyes studied hers for a moment before they found the horizon again.
The night was peaceful. The only sounds the waves of the ocean slapping against the side of the ship. It was a steady rhythm, as steady as his heartbeat. Ace took a deep breath and then spoke quietly.
“I want to tell Whitebeard about my father… before I decide to accept the offer.”
“Still want out? Become the Pirate King?”
“Do you want to leave, MIssus?”
Ashina smiled. “I follow you, Flame Boy. If you need to tell him before you decide to accept his offer then do so, but I don’t think we should leave. I would like to get my things off the Spadille one day.”
Ace chuckled and kissed the top of her head. Ashina brought a hand to his cheek and caught his attention. “I’m serious, Ace. I will follow you, and whatever you’re thinking. I don’t think it’s going to be as bad as you think. I trust you, have a little faith in yourself.”
Ashina leaned up on her tiptoes to press her lips to his. Her hands slid to his shoulders and his traced her curves slowly, stopping only once they cupped her round backside. She pulled away and gave him a smirk. “Don’t be all night. I’ll be in our room.”
When she passed Marco and Thatch, she cut her eyes over to them, catching their gaze. She gave them a wave and a grin. “Good night, creepers.”
“Ack! I’m not a creeper, yoi!”
.
.
.
When Ace entered the room, it was dark. He brought to life the three candles that sat on the table beside the bed. It illuminated Ashina in a soft glow. Her back was to him and the sheet was tangled around her legs, draped over her thighs. The nightgown bared most of her back to him and his eyes focused on her tattoo. Ace was hyper aware of how many eyes stared at her and he wasn’t ashamed to admit he was a little bit possessive. Ashina was his, she wasn’t his property and he’d never dare to say he owned her, but she was his, just as he was hers. Whatever they were. The flaming spade was a clear indicator that she was with him. The tattoo was almost always visible unless she had to cover it due to the weather, and she hated winter islands.
Ace couldn’t help but smile as he watched her for a moment, quietly toeing out of his boots. He shed his shorts and carefully crawled into the bed with her. Her eyes fluttered open as he pulled her closer to his chest. She looked up and him, a soft smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.
“There you are,” she mumbled. Ashina stretched, back arching, before pressing against him, now more awake. “How’d it go? Should we be finding a way off the ship?”
Ace gave her a soft smile. “No, we’re not going anywhere.” He was still shocked by Whitebeard’s reaction to his admission. “He didn’t care, said we were all children of the sea.”
Ashina smiled and kissed the hollow of his throat before moving to look at him. “I told you it was all going to be okay. I knew he wouldn’t care. You aren’t Gol D Roger, Ace. He’s your father, but that’s it. Otherwise, he’s just a man. You are your own person. Your experiences have made you who you are, not him.”
“I’m still the Pirate King’s son.”
Ashina gave a half shrug. “So? I’m a Yonko’s daughter. You share the same blood and he passed down some features. That doesn’t make you him.”
Ace bent his head, kissing the tip of her nose. Ashina giggled softly and burrowed into his chest, pressing herself closer into his warmth. “So,” she whispered, “should I start calling you Commander?”
“It’s not official.”
“It will be. Commander.” She practically purred the title.
Ace smirked as her fingers brushed across his ribs. “Okay, Missus.”
Ashina snorted, digging a finger between his ribs and making him let out a yelp.
“Hey now!”
She giggled and shoved him, rolling him to his back as she laid on his chest, lifting her head to look at him. Her hair cascaded over her shoulder and down his side. The locks glowing ruby in the candlelight.
“What are we going to do with the Spadille?”
It was hard to think as her fingers traced patterns over his chest and shoulders, connecting freckles in the soft light. Ace caught her hand, stilling her motions, and sighed. “Hard to think when you do that.”
“Oh really? I should do it more often then,” she teased.
Ace rolled his eyes and then frowned slightly, thinking of a reply to her question. “We’ll have to burn her I guess, the Spadille, I can’t see her in someone else’s hands. Collect our things and then say goodbye. She was a damn good ship.”
“She was, but I doubt Whitebeard lets you sail her separately. Seems like most of the crew sails together.”
“Yeah. We haven’t sailed far from the island. Maybe we can go back and say goodbye to the Spadille properly. Might be nice to have a huge crew.”
“Might be nice to have a real cook,” she muttered. “Who sails the Grand Line without a real cook? Oh, that’s right, we did.”
Ace chuckled and tipped her head up with his fingers. He opened his mouth to say something but the words died on his lips as her green eyes stared into his. They were a dark emerald in the dim light, swirling with her own emotions that he could not name. The way she looked at him made his stomach flip and his heart race. Instead of words, his mouth slanted over hers and his hand slid from her jaw to tangle in the hair at the base of her neck.
.
.
.
Deuce, Aggie, and Saber carried the last crates off the ship, taking them over to the Moby Dick. Ashina stood near the mast as Ace looked around the deck one more time.
“Ready?” he asked.
“She’s yours. Are you ready, Captain?”
Ace smiled, surprised by her words, Captain he was used to, Commander was still new. Ace reached her side and wrapped his arm around her back, hand resting on her hip. Her arm slid around him and she reached up to kiss his jaw.
“I think so,” he said. “She was a good ship.”
“She was, Cap,” Deuce said, coming up behind them. “Crew’s on the deck of the Moby. Ready when you are.”
Ace nodded to Deuce, who turned back for the much large ship.
“On to new adventures. Thanks for getting us this far.” Ace pressed his hand to the mast and then turned both him and Ashina around.
He pulled her in front of him as they crossed the plank to the Moby Dick. Mihar and Aggie pulled the large plank back with the help of a few of the Second Division men.
“Ready, Commander?” Ashina asked, bringing Ace out of his thoughts as he stared at the Spadille.
Ace looked down at her with a smile and nodded. It was clear now, on the Spadille he had been a captain, but here, on this new leg of their adventure he was a Commander. “Yeah.”
She squeezed his hand and then let go as he stepped forward.
“Shinka: Shiranui,” Ace said, calling forth one of the long fiery lances. He hurled it across distance separating the two ships.
The lance lodged in the deck, just below the mast, the flames sparking and catching the wood on fire. The flames grew and spread, ember’s catching the sails and suddenly the ship was ablaze.
Ashina stepped forward, brushing Ace’s fingers with her own. He gripped her hand in his, holding onto her as they watched the Spadille burn. Their crew, now members of the Second Division, stood with them as they said their silent goodbye.
.
.
.
The celebration was in full swing, complete with copious amount of alcohol and food. Ace was officially the Second Division Commander. Ashina was proud of him. The role of a leader suited him, and the men in his division already respected him. His dream of becoming the Pirate King was shifting, he told her as much, but she thought no less of him. He still had a dream, a goal, and she had hers, and together they would try to accomplish them.
Crew members covered the expansive deck, but Ace kept her close. She didn’t mind the possessiveness. In fact, she rather enjoyed the fact that Ace wanted everyone to know she was with him. They never said it aloud, never called each other words like boyfriend or girlfriend, and Missus was just a nickname, but the feeling was there. The relationship between them was more than just lovers, more than just friends.
There was a quiet pause that caught her attention, pulling her out of her thoughts just before most of the crew around them shouted.
“He fell asleep!”
Ashina laughed, smiling at the freckled man beside her, who was in fact asleep. “Yeah, he does that sometimes.”
Whitebeard’s laughter was joined by several others. The laughter increased after a few minutes when Ace woke up and went right back to eating.
The slightest smirk tugged at the corners of her mouth. The sun brought out subtle copper strands of hair scattered in his otherwise dark mop. Without a shirt, the freckles on his broad shoulders stood out as well. Ace noticed her stare and held out the roll that was in his hand to her.
Ashina giggled and shook her head. “No thanks.”
Marco, a full mug of beer in his hand, sat across from them and grinned. “So, Ashina, are you going to get the Whitebeard mark, like your Spade?”
Ace paused in his eating to look over at her, waiting for her reply as well. The remark also caught Thatch and Deuce’s attention, both men looked up from their card game.
“I’m not in a division, nor am I a Whitebeard pirate. I’m a Revolutionary Spade.”
“The Spade pirates joined the Whitebeards,” Thatch commented.
“And? Doesn’t necessarily make me a Whitebeard pirate,” she counted.
“Then what are you?” Ace asked with a smile.
“Commander Ace’s Missus,” Deuce coughed in his hand.
Ashina shot him a glare and then grinned at Ace. “What I’ve always been, Ashina the Red-Haired Revolutionary Spade.”
Pops laughed, having heard their conversation, and chimed in. “I’ve never had a woman on the fighting crew, but you held your own against two of my Commanders. You’ll be in the second division under Commander Ace, Missus Spade,” he said, putting emphasis on the moniker the Marines gave her.
Deuce and Ace howled with laughter. Ashina dared to glare at Whitebeard. “Not funny, Pops.”
“You called him Pops yoi!”
Ashina turned to Marco and arched one brow. “What am I supposed to call him? Whitebeard? Edward? Sir?”
“Pops is fine,” Whitebeard said, catching their attention. “You’re a daughter of Whitebeard if you sail on this ship.”
Ashina caught the older man’s gaze and held it. She could feel the others watching them, several intrigued and a few tense. Ashina’s lips pulled into a grin, but she shot back, “I’ll call you Pops, and sail under your jolly roger, but I still have my own father.”
Whitebeard stared hard, but Ashina did not back down and after a moment he nodded. She expected him to ask her to name him, but surely, he knew. It wasn’t hard to make the connection if you thought about it long enough.
“Your father know you’re here?”
Ashina understood in those words, the meaning behind them and the questioning stare he gave her. Whitebeard was not a stupid man. He knew.
“He knows I’m with Ace. He’ll figure it out soon enough, if he hasn’t already.”
“Will he show up looking for you?”
“Scared?” she teased.
Several of the crew gasped at her comment, but Whitebeard laughed loudly, “Gurararara.”
“If he does it won’t be to fight,” she added. “Well, I guess at least not over me.”
“Who’s your father?” Marco asked.
Ashina grinned and stood from her place beside Ace. “A pirate.”
I went shopping and came home with more than was on the list
Tagging @one-piece-26 since it’s basic a MaTch story, but with a twist.
Also, Marco is a female in this story, as I wanted to try something else. Still spelled Marco, the explanation for this comes in the story.
Marco looked at the shopping list, frowning. It was a rather long list, but they had run out on so many things, as Thatch hadn’t had much time lately to do the shopping. It was why Marco had decided to do this for Thatch. However, it wasn’t an easy task, as Marco didn’t know where half of the things on where. A sigh was heard, before the blonde went to ask an employee for help.
“Oh that’s a really long list.” A freckled young man grinned, seeing Marco’s list and then he took it. “Come, I’ll help you with it. It’s a slow day anyway.” The freckled male started to walk and Marco followed him. Ace was his name, according to the name tag. “Usual Thatch does the shopping, but he’s been busy lately and I decided to help him out, yoi.” Marco felt the need to explain why she didn’t know where half of it was.
Ace was still grinning. “Ah so you’re pomp’s girl?” Grey eyes eyed her shortly, before he put some stuff into her cart. “He’s a lucky guy. Told me how you disliked shopping, so that you do this, is a big thing. He’s going to love you more.” Ace continued the conversation.
Marco was a little surprised, but then shrugged it off. Thatch shopped in this store regulary and he was a social and bright person, so that Ace knew him wasn’t that surprising. Now that she thought about it, Marco could recall that Thatch had mentioned Ace a few times too. As an adorable young freckled male and Marco had to admit that her boyfriend was right. Ace was cute.
“I would like to think I’m the lucky one. He can have just anybody and he want me. I’m not good in a kitchen or at shopping and he does it with pleasure, yoi.” She smiled happily. Ace’s grin never faded from his face, as he walked around with her, filling her cart more and more.
“Anyway, I was starting to get worried about him, as I haven’t seen him in a while, but then I thought he went shopping when I was off, as my shifts has changed. Seems he just have been busy. A shame, as I enjoyed talking to him.” Ace had crossed out the items on her list. They were almost done and she thanked God that she liked to work out, because it would be heavy to bring into their house.
She looked from the almost filled cart and to Ace. “Why don’t you just give me your number and I can see if I can talk him into hanging out with you after work? He loves getting new friends, yoi.” She wondered why Thatch hadn’t long ago done this. After all, it seemed that Ace liked to see Thatch around.
Ace blushed lightly and turned to get some cans for her. “I shouldn’t...” He mumbled and Marco was curious what that was about. She tried to remember what Thatch had tld her about Ace, but couldn’t recall anything else right now. Well, she wouldn’t mind Thatch hanging out with Ace, so she would give them a chance.
Ripping off some paper from the noteboo she always had on her, she wrote down her number, as she wouldn’t give Thatch’s number to anyone without his permission. “What about this? I’ll give you my number and if you want to hang out, you can write me, yoi.”
Hesitantly Ace took the note and Marco noticed the smile and grin had faded. She just smiled and looked at the list that was all crossed out. “Thank you for your help, Ace. I would be in here for hours if it hadn’t been for you. I’ll leave a review on the website, yoi.”
-x-
“I love you so much.” Thatch smiled, before pulling Marco close, giving her a deep kiss. She smiled, wrapping her arms around his neck. For a moment all that excited, was them and their bodies. As the kiss broke, Marco’s eyes shined with pure happiness. Thatch gently caressed her cheek, love shinning in his eyes.
A soft chuckle left her. “Thought I would do something nice for you, since you’re always so nice to me, yoi.” She didn’t let go of her, loving to hold him close. “Also, I met Ace. Really a lovely young man. Why haven’t you befriended him outside work, yoi?” Her eyebrow was slightly raised.
Thatch scratched the back of his neck. “I tried, but we had a misunderstanding and I think he’s feeling awkward about it. You see, he thought I was flirting with him and was confused when I mentioned you and tol dme straight out that he didn’t want to be a secret fling.” He chuckled lightly, making Marco snort.
“Told you enough times that you’re a big flirt.” She gave him a soft kiss. “Anyway, I gave him my number, because I’m sure you two will hit off well. He did say he’d missed you, yoi.” Her arms left his neck. “It’s up to him now, yoi.”
Thatch took her hand and kissed it lightly. “You are the most wonderful girlfriend a man could ever have.” Smiling, Marco went back to the couch and Thatch headed to the kitchen, where he would make a wonderful dinner for her.
-x-
A week later, a text from an unknown number came to Marco. She frowned lightly, but smiled brightly when reading it. It was from Ace, saying that if Thatch wanted to hang out, he wold be in the Rip-Off bar Friday from 9 pm. Marco texted back, writing she will tell Thatch that. Short after, another text popped up, Ace giving her thumbs up.
-x-
After the first evening out, Thatch and Ace son became good friends. Marco didn’t feel left behind, as Ace was just as charming and friendly as he’d been the first time she met him. He started to hang out with her too and both of them at the same time.
“... That is how Luffy got his scar.” Ace laughed, as he poured his fourth portion of food onto the plate. By now, both Marco and Thatch had gotten used to how much Ace ate. Marco suspected a high metabolism, but was still not that close with the younger male to ask him about it. She knew he had narcolepsy, after he fell asleep while taking on his boots.
“Your brother sounds like he’s a danger to himself, yoi.” Marco chuckled. She loved to hear Ace talk about his ‘brothers’. It was so clear that Ace loved them dearly and that they would always be part of his life. She looked forward to meet them one day.
Ace snorted. “He’s a walking disaster, but always have the Devil’s Luck with him. Besides great friends, who keeps him at bay most of the time. The group he’s frends with are the oddest group I’ve ever seen, but thhey fit together with Luffy there.” Ace shrugged. “Anyway, why is your name spelled M-A-R-C-O? Isn’t it a man’s name?”
“It’s because the nurse and doctor messed up when I was born. Not that they thought I was a boy, but my mother said Mako and they heard Marco and wrote it like that, yoi.” Marco shrugged. She was used to people asking her about it and it didn’t really bother her. In fact, employers often thought she was a man, even if she had a picture on her applications, so she was called for an interview more often than others, when she needed a job after school.
Ace laughed at that and Thatch smiled softly. He’d heard the story many times, but it was funny though. What doctor and nurse would make that mistake? He didn’t mind how her name was spelled or pronounced. Some said Mako, others Marco and as long as she wasn’t bothered, neither was he.
-x-
“Marco...” Thatch looked at her, as she sat next to him, cuddled up against his side, while they watched a movie - one they had seen a dozen of times, but it was just background noise to their cuddling session. She hummed, inidacting she was still awake and listening.
“About Ace... I don’t know how to say it, but .... Well ... Remember when I said he thought I was flirting and turned me down because I had told him about you?” Thatch sounded a little uncertain and insecure, something that he rarely was and Marco titled her head to look at him, before shifting her position, sitting on his lap.
“Spit it, yoi.” She looked into his eyes, demanding he said what he had to her face. Thatch bit his lip lightly, before speaking his mind. “I felt a little upset, because I ... uhm ... felt attracted to him and while I could never dream of cheating on you, I ... I still feel that way around him and lately ... Marco I love you and you know me, but ...”
He was cut off by her lips against his, hands slowly going under his shirt. “I would lie to say I didn’t feel the same around Ace. Want him to join us? Or do you want him alone? If it’s the latter, I only wish the same, yoi.” She spoke against his lips, while she teasingly let her hands dance over his skin.
Thatch shuddered and smirked at her words. “Why not just ease him into our relationship? With him around, I feel even more complete, something I thought wasn’t possible. I think I’m falling in love with him too.” He wrapped his arms around her.
She hummed pleased and wrapped her arms around him, still under his shirt and placed her head on his chest. “I love you, Thatch, but I do feel I’m falling for the freckled male too, yoi.”
-x-
Ace leaned back, sitting in th emiddle of the couch, Marco and Thatch at each side of him. At first he had politely declined to sit between them, but since Marco and Thatch only sat next to each other when they had a cuddling session, he had hesitantly accepted. Now he didn’t mind, actually liking it.
Marco shifted her position and used the armrest as back support and placed her legs on Ace’s lap. It was summer and she was wearing a sundress, which went to her mid tighs. Doing this, the dress showed more of her legs than usual, though she didn’t think further about it, being comfortable around Ace.
The freckled boy did blush lightly, as Marco had never done anything like this before. He eyed Thatch, who absently had started to caress her feet, making her sigh happily. Ace swallowed heavy, fighting down the blush and tried to act casual, though he did like the sight and the feeling of her legs.
“I’m sure she’ll love it if you caressed her legs.” Thatch’s voice suddenly sounded in his ear and had him almost jolt. His words made Ace blush and stare with eyes wide open at Thatch. He’d just thought that it would be nice to do that. COuld Thatch read minds?
Thatch smirked and used his free hand to cup Ace’s face. “You’re so cute when blushing.” He leaned his face a little forward. “Makes it harder to resist you.” Ace could feel Thatch’s breath against his lips and it had him shudder.
A chuckle behind him did snap him out of his thoughts though. “Thatch that’s not how you do it with Ace, yoi.” Marco shifted her position again and moved to sit on her knees, facing Ace, who’d turned his attention towards her. His mind went completely blank, not really processing what was going on.
“Ace. Do you like us? As in more than you think you should, yoi?” Marco asked him in all seriousness. Swallowing heavily, Ace nodded, not really able to deny it any longer. Not with how intense her stare was or how her hands on his lap felt like. She smiled at his answer and leaned forward, kissing his cheek, before whispering something into his ear. “We feel the same, so it’s okay for you to show it. If you want to, of course. We would love to take our relationship to the next level, making you our lover, yoi.”
Ace’s eyes widened lightly and he felt the heat going to his face. A polyamory relationship? Was that really possible? Was it allowed? He blinked. Was he seriously thinking about accepting the proposal? Yes he was. He wanted them both. He’d never felt this content in his life before. Well, not content like this. He was content with Luffy and Sabo, but it was different with Marco and Thatch.
He realized that Marco was still only inches away from his face and he acted before his insercirties and doubts could get the better of him. He pulled her onto his lap and kissed her, humming pleased, as she kissed him back. Next to him, Thatch let his fingers go through Ace’s hair, proving it was alright.
As he broke the kiss with Marco, she was smiling happily, but he didn’t get to say anything or try and take it back, before his face was turned and another pair of lips was placed on his. His heart was beating fast and he felt like he’d butterflies in his stomach, but he also felt happy. It just felt right.
“I take this as a yes, love.” Thatch smiled, as he broke the kiss with Ace. A goofy grin formed on the younger male’s lips. “Guess I can’t settle with just one person. I’m greedy.” He felt a boost of confidence filling him.
“Neither can we, yoi.” Marco grinned, before giving Thatch a short kiss, while still sitting on Ace’s lap. Who would have thought that her shopping on that day would bring more than just the needed groceries?
Family trip
For my lovely @asktheseawitch. A late Christmas gift. I hope you’ll like it.
If anyone would have asked Izo 15 years ago if he would want a family, he would have told them that he already had one and he was content with the one he got. It wouldn’t have crossed his mind that the person or people were talking about him getting married and have children. Today he couldn’t believe that he never had thought about it before. Having a family of his own was a true blessing, even if it wasn’t always easy, especially since the person he loved and had a family with, was part of another crew. It was a challenge, but they had managed to make it work.
Today they were with him, the Straw Hats having paid the crew a visit, once they had spotted the Moby Dick. Luffy had gone somewhere with Ace, Sanji had started off swooning over the nurses, but then challenged Thatch to a cooking contest. Zoro was somewhat wary of them, but was drinking with Vista, Blenheim and Kingdew. Chopper was with Marco, learning from the older man, while Robin was talking with Whitebeard, Nami exploring the ship - probably trying to find something of value she could take with them. Haruta was probably keeping an eye on the redhead. The rest of the Straw Hats were on deck, relaxing and talking to the Whitebeard’s.
After Serena, Avery and Yamato had greeted Whitebeard and talked with him and Stefan, before Izo had brought them to their room so he could have some time with his family. He missed out on so much and therefor he loved these moments even more. His children eagerly told him about the adventures and he tried his best to not show his concerns. He’d known that living as a Straw Hat was not going to be a calm life, but he had also accepted that his wive’s journey was with Luffy and his crew.
A chuckle left him, as Avery eagerly told a funny story. As long as his love and children were somewhat safe and sound, he could endure the pain of not being part of that life, the fear of what danger Luffy could bring them into and not seeing them as often as he wished. He treasured these moments even more so.
“I heard one of the navigators say we were close to an island and I’m sure Luffy would love to explore it with Ace.” Izo said, as Avery and Yamato had finished telling him about their adventures. The two kids looked at him, eyes sparkling and he couldn’t help ruffling his son’s hair affectionately. “I thought that the four of us could spend some time there together.” He continued.
Yamato and Avery looked at Serena with excitement in their eyes. The woman smiled softly and nodded, to which the children cheered and hugged their father. He laughed with them, hugging them, as Serena leaned over and kissed his lips, telling him it was a wonderful idea.
A few hours later they docked at an island. As it was late, they postponed the trip. Once the kids were tucked into their beds - they slept on the Moby Dick, as they wanted to be close to their father - Izo went to ask Thatch a favor, to which the cook happily agreed.
“What did you ask of Thatch?” Serena asked, as Izo had come back to their room and held her in his arms. He just smiled softly. “You’ll see tomorrow, darling. Ready for some us time?” Teasingly he nippled onto her ear, hands gently helping her out of her clothes. Chuckling, Serena turned, helping him getting undressed too.
The next morning Avery and Yamato woke their parents with excitement written all over their faces. It was clear that they couldn’t wait to get onto the island with them. Smiling, Izo and Serena helped their kids getting dressed and told them to get breakfast and wait for them there. “They are really looking forward for today, love. As do I.” Serena gave him a kiss on the cheek, before getting dressed.
He chuckled and got dressed himself. “I just want to have a nice day with my family.” He gave her a kiss, before walking to the galley with her. They found their kids with some Whitebeard’s and Straw Hat’s and it filled Izo with pure happiness that both crews seemed to get along and most important that his kids were not bothered by the fact that they were two crews. Not that any acted that way, except for Zoro, but it was to be expected and Izo didn’t mind.
“Daddy is taking us out for a family trip. Just the four of us. It’s going to be great.” Avery told Haruta and Nami, her eyes shining with pure childish glee. Izo smiled at the sight and went to get some breakfast, before sitting at the table.
Thatch came to tell that everything was ready and that pecked the interest of Avery and Yamato. They kept asking what Izo had planned, but their father just smirked secretively at them. He didn’t want to ruin the surprise and he was defintely not going to tell it where two males with a black hole instead of a stomach could hear it.
As they had breakfast, Izo got a basket from Thatch, before the cross dresser guided his family to the town. “A picnic?” Serena asked, as they were out of hearing range of Luffy and Ace. Smiling, Izo nodded. “First thing first though.” He led them to the market. “Avery. Yamato.” He called softly and then pointed at a stall nearby. “You can chose three things from the stall you want.” Eagerly, they went to the stall and looked through all of it.
Serena chuckled softly, knowing that Izo always gave them small gifts. As the kids had chosen, Izo paid, before walking through town with them. Seeing his kids excited to see everything, reminded him that children had an unique way of seeing the world and a lot of things were new to them.
After a few hours, he brought them out of town and to a small cliff near the coast. They had a perfect view of the sea and the jungle behind them. Avery and Yamato was in awe, but more son, when Izo took out all their favorite food. Even Serena lifted an eyebrow, seeing how the kids and her was spoiled. “How much did this cost you, love?” She asked.
“It doesn’t matter, darling. Nothing is too expensive for you.” He smiled and made himself comfortable. Avery and Yamato were already eating, but he didn’t mind the lack of manners, as he knew why they were so eager to eat. “Uncle Thatch’s food are always so yummy. You are lucky dad.” Yamato had remebered to swallow before speaking.
“Sanji isn’t a bad cook either, but I do prefer Thatch’s food over his. There’s more to Thatch’s food than just taste to me.” He admitted that much, but was pleased that his children had the opportunity to get such rich and tasting food, even if they weren’t with him.
Avery and Yamato nodded, while eating. Serena had a blessed smile and leaned against Izo, once they had eating the lunch Thatch had prepared for them. The kids were playing and Izo held Serena close. Nothing was more precious to him than his family and the time he had with them. It was a true blessing to have them in his life.
Up In Flames [Ch. 1]
AO3 | FF.net  (not a new fic, just never uploaded it to tumblr)
AU. Marco/Ace. Arson investigator Ace finds himself working on a case with police detective Marco, linking a string of arsons to a web of organized crime that pulls them in deeper than they ever wanted.
Thick, stifling streams of smoke climbed out of the charred and crumbled debris and clung heavily to the air. The crooked, skeletal rebar climbed out of the collapsed concrete like bones escaping flesh, and the blackened remains of wood and cloth scattered ashes into the wind.
“How many dead?”
“Three.”
“Damn.”
Flashing blue and red lights illuminate the night, reflecting off of the surrounding midcentury colonial houses and one pile of smoldering rubble, barely maintaining the shape of what once was a home.
“How many house fires is that this month?”
“Too many.”
When the firefighters cleared the scene, one man from the fire department stayed behind, a tall, dark haired man with a splash of freckles scattered across the bridge of his nose under a thick layer of ash. He surveyed the damage, taking mental note of the burn patterns, the way the structure crumbled, the burn path. He circled the entirety of the decrepit property before entering the charred remains.
Outside, two police detectives interviewed neighbors and witnesses. One man, dressed in a posh white suit with a swirl of fashionable auburn hair and a goatee, comforted a sobbing woman gently while she described what she had seen.
“It all happened so fast, I smelled smoke from my bedroom and though my husband left something on the stove, but when I looked out the window I saw fire coming out of the neighbors house. I just… I was so stunned! I called 911 and the fire department arrived, but by then the roof had already caved in, I couldn’t believe how fast a house could just burn down… and the neighbors! Oh, it’s just terrible,” she sobbed.
The other officer, a tall man with a tuft of yellow hair on the top of his head and lazy eyes nodded in understanding, writing down her description in his notebook.
The detectives let the woman go back into her home and turned towards the blackened rubble.
“Hard to believe that used to be a house,” the white suited man said to his partner.
“Yeah.”
  A dust-covered man emerged from the skeletal remains of the house, brushing ash from his clothes, and approached the two men with a somber look.
“Who wears white to a house fire?” the dusty man commented.
With a chuckle, the man replied, “Name’s Thatch. You must be the arson investigator.”
“That’s me, call me Ace,” he replied, extending a dusty hand which was promptly taken by the other detective in a firm handshake, drawing his attention to the blonde, lazy-eyed man.
“Nice to meet you Ace, I’m Marco. I’ll be the lead detective on this case,” the blonde detective said, locking eyes with the arson investigator in an intense gaze. The intensity was stirring and Ace felt his immediate, engaging presence and found it to be energizing. The contrast of that energy to the calmness of his features was captivating.
“What did the neighbors say?” Ace asked the detectives.
“They all agreed it happened very fast. One minute they notice flames in the windows. When the fire department arrives at the scene the roof has already collapsed, and just minutes later the place is rubble,” explained Marco.
“That sounds about right,” the arson investigator hummed. “This wasn’t an accidental fire. I’ve collected some samples to bring to the lab.”
“Was it the same as the other fires?” Thatch asked, referring to the previous fires that month.
Ace shook his head, “No, the trouble is all the fires were started differently; different incendiaries, different accelerants. I can’t link them by method.” He brushed a hand through his hair, causing a drift of ash and dust to fall to his shoulders. “But I have this gut feeling, something’s going on, and this isn’t going to be the last fire like this we put out.”
  When the detectives got back into the car Thatch smirked to his partner from the passenger seat, “that arson investigator huh? He’s totally your type.”
“Shut it Thatch,” the blonde rebuked.
“I saw the way you took that handshake, damn, you were not gonna let me touch him first.”
“Come on man, people just died, show some respect and stop talking about my love life for once.”
His partner shrugged, “people die every day in this line of business. But you don’t run into an ass like that every day. You get his number?”
“Of course I got his number, dipshit, we’re gonna be working together,” Marco snapped, but he was smiling. His good natured partner took every chance to tease him but they could never stay mad at each other.
  Back in his office Ace felt like one of those wild conspiracy theorists with his wall of arson evidence. The investigator was a visual person and needed his information out where he could see it to visualize the way the pieces went together. He new there were pieces missing, but he felt like he was so close to solving this thing, cracking it open. This was the third arson this month, different MO each time, yet in his gut he knew they were connected, and he knew there were more to come. And today he had met the third pair of police detective he would be working with. Couldn’t they assign one guy to the arsons instead of having him running between six different people to convey his findings? He felt like he was at his wits end. At least the one blond detective seemed very serious. Perhaps they would actually make some progress on this one. Ace was working overtime, all the time, and his little brother was getting frustrated with him. He hated doing this to Luffy. Sure, the kid was fiercely independent, but Ace had moved back East for the sole purpose of spending more time with him.
He rubbed at his eyes. On top of everything, his narcoleptic ass hadn’t been getting enough sleep. Leaning back in his chair, Ace felt himself floating in and out of consciousness and was about to pass out right then and there when his phone rang, jolting him out of his sleeping spell.
“This is Ace,” he answered,
“Hey, it’s Marco, the detective from the arson case today.”
“Oh Marco, you’re working late.”
There was a chuckle on the other end of the line, “Did I wake you?”
Ace laughed awkwardly, “You caught me.”
“My bad, sleeping beauty.” Marco continued before Ace could reply to the comment, “I was thinking about what you said, about how you think these cases are connected, I’d like to hear more about that. You free for coffee some time tomorrow?”
This is something Marco liked about his work, he could casually ask people on dates without actually asking them on a date.
“Mmm, Sleeping beauty huh. You’ve clearly never seen me sleep,” Ace laughed, “How is noon tomorrow? Not the Starbucks but that coffee shop on the corner with the couches.”
“I know the one, I’ll see you there at noon,” Marco was grinning, he liked this Ace guy already.
Ace rubs a hand over his eyes when he spots the package amongst the rest of his mail. It looks innocent enough but he knows that it means that Sabo went through with his threat of signing Ace up for those pen pal programs for soldiers, just like Ace didn’t want.
“Oh, looks like your brother was serious,” Deuce says leaning into Ace’s space. “Maybe they’ll have sent something good.”“I’m low on gum,” Ace mutters because he is and he wants more but he can’t remember where his card ended up and he’s still waiting on a replacement to reach him from home. “And I’m sure you’re gonna steal something.”“You know me so well, Captain.”“Fuck off,” Ace says picking up his package like it’ll explode. “Alright, I’ll be in my office. There reports to go over.”Deuce winces, “I’m behind too.”
“That’s what you get for being lazy,” Ace states moving back to his office carefully.
The package isn’t large and it’s not heavy, but he hates these. The programs are suppose to be nice, but he doesn’t want to spend time writing letters when he’s knee deep in expense reports and patrol plans. He barely has time to send weekly letters to his brothers that aren’t a handful of sentences and a thumb drive full of stupid pictures that Deuce took because he felt sorry for Sabo and Luffy never hearing anything good.
Ace drops down into his chair and unlocks his computer, signing back into the programs he needed and trying to find the report that was needed soonest. One of them was suppose to be submitted by end of day and Ace couldn’t remember which one it could possibly be. So, he submits an email to his commander and stares tiredly at the package.
“Fuck it,” Ace sighs tiredly pulling his knife from his pocket and flicking it open to slice through the tape on the package, stopping again before opening the flaps. “I’m going to murder Sabo and leave Koala all his belongings for this.”
The package is neat, a small tin of something buried at the very bottom underneath everything else, including six packages of gum. The kind that comes in little white containers and holds more than the little packs.
“Well, that is good at least,” Ace sighs fishing out the letter because he has to at least respond to the first few and then hopefully the person on the other end will forget or move on to something else.
I hope this finds you well, Ace is grateful that it’s not more wordy an introduction. My name is Marco, I’m a physical therapist. The program that you ended up assigned to was directed more for veterans then children, so I served for almost ten years with the 1st Field Artillery Regiment in the 4th battalion. I don’t think I have anything else to say currently, but I would be willing to speak to you should you need someone to talk to.
Marco Newgate
“Well,” Ace says slowly, before catching sight of the tiny ps on the bottom of the page.
P.S. My brother insisted on sending cookies. I don’t know if you will be able to eat them when they arrive, but he wants someone to try his new recipe. If you respond, please say they were good, even if you couldn’t eat them. He’ll insist on sending more if you don’t.
“I hope they’re good, I like cookies,” Ace mutters taking care to open the tin, which even had a helpful date written on it, barely a week ago. Which meant that Ace should be able to eat them. “Oh nice, those look like chocolate chip.”
He takes a bite, shifting through the other things in the box curiously before looking back at his email to find nothing, “I suppose I’ve got time to write something.”
Marco looks at the letter curiously, the handwriting on the outside neat and smudge free, he hadn’t been expecting a response. The program was something that his brothers had thought would help him adjust after his discharge, he had just thought he would send in a package and then never have to think about it again.
“Oh, who did you get?” Thatch asks leaning over his shoulder. “Did they like the cookies that I gave them?”
“I would know if you quit hanging around so I could read this,” Marco states elbowing Thatch in the stomach. “Get lost.”
“Fine, but tell me if they liked the cookies. I wanna put them up for sale at Izo’s bookshop and if they’re not good enough then Izo will be mad,” Thatch says laughing as he leaves.
Marco, thank you for the package. My name is Ace Portgas, I’m a Captain in the 19th Field Artillery 1st battalion. I specialize in Supply and Acquisitions. My brother signed me up for the program, I don’t know which one he picked or why he did it, but apparently I need to have more friends or talk more. I’m not sure, to be honest. I sent you sand in the envelope, I’m sure you hate it as much as I do, but I couldn’t keep it from getting in.
Marco snorts, tipping the envelope out onto a sheet of paper and shaking his head as the sand covered it. He was fairly sure that Ace had added the sand, but it was a cute thought.
There is a thumb drive in there with pictures. My LT likes to take them and I’ve been sending them to my brothers to show I’m alive and not just a robot or my LT pretending to be me. Which my brothers have accused me of being. I thought you might like to see more sand. Oh, and one of our men, he says that he knows you? SGT Newgate is pretty great. Nice guy and does his paperwork quickly. I am on his right side in one picture, if you can’t figure out who I am.
Portgas D Ace.
P.S. I enjoyed the cookies. They were very good and there was a hint of something that enhanced the flavors.
Marco laughs, “he liked the cookies!”
“Fuck yes!” Thatch shouts from further in the house. “I knew it!”
“And he knows Jozu! We can finally send him things too, he added Jozu’s address!” Marco brushes through the sand to find the thumb drive and smiles. He would have to think up something more for his next letter.
X | CHAPTER 2
FFN: Lust For Life
“Arina get down here.” A female voice called from the doorway and tapped her foot to the ground, her arms crossed over her chest as she waited. She rose an eyebrow when she heard noise, followed by crash before doors opened.
“What?” A maroon haired teen glared at the woman, annoyed.
“I told you to get down here.” The woman said.
“No way...” The teen scoffed. “What do you want mom?” She asked. “I don't have time.” A whine left her lips, seeing her mother won’t back down.
“Get to the store and buy ingredients.” Her mother said and turned back towards kitchen. “Now,” She shot her a glare.
“Why now of all the times?” Arina groaned and stomped down the stairs. “What do I need to buy?” She asked and without waiting for a reply, snatched a paper that was on table. She looked over the ingredients and sighed, leaving the kitchen. Standing on the hallway she quickly put on her shoes, her keys and left the house.
“Always making me do things…” Arina murmured under her breath and walked out towards the store that was few minutes away. “Arina do this, Arina do that. Arina this, Arina that. What am I? A slave or what?” She scoffed the whole way to the store and back home.
Letting out a sigh, she looked to the ground and opened the doors only to stop midway when she saw legs on the floor. Her eyes widened as her gaze went higher, scent of blood hitting her nose and before she knew it, she screamed, bag falling to the ground and ingredients rolling on the floor. She heard few doors opening as she ran to the man and knelt down, pressing on the wound without realizing.
“What is go-Thatch!?” A male voice called and in a matter of seconds the room was filled of men and two women that were kneeling down, trying to stop the bleeding.
Arina didn't realize she was pulled away until a blond haired man came into her vision. “Are you okay?” He asked her in calm voice, but even then she could hear he was on the edge, worried for the man that was now carried away.
Waking from her daze, Arina looked at the man, who was squatting in front of her. She frowned, recognizing him, before she looked around, seeing nothing but the same faces. She raised her hands to touch her head, but stopped midway, seeing blood on them. Her hands began to shake as realization hit her.
“Ace calm down.” A male voice got to her and she snapped her head to the called teen, who was trying to break free from Vista's hold, despite being on fire. “You can't go after Teach and Thatch will make it out.” Izo said.
“But he attacked him. He was under my division. My responsibility.” Ace glared at the man and before anyone realized what happened, Arina was standing in front of him, Ace’s head snapped to the right side.
“O-oi…” Izo murmured shocked.
“If you go after him, you’ll die.” Arina had no idea from where she got strength to talk, but the look on everyone's faces told her she did the right thing. Or so she hoped. But they were more surprised for the reason that she managed to slap him, even though he was on fire. “What would Sabo tell you?”
Ace looked straight into her brown eyes, his widening like he just saw a ghost. And only now did it dawn on everyone in the room that she was a stranger. “Who are you?” He asked. “How do you know about Sabo?”
Realizing what she just said she took a step back, her eyes looking around the room. She was cornered. There was no way she could escape. All eyes were on her, some confused, some glaring while some were surprised.
“Did you stab Thatch?” Izo spoke after a moment of silence.
Arina snapped her head to him, her eyes wide. “W-what?” she stuttered. Just few minutes ago, they thought Teach was the culprit. Now they thought it was her? She understood some still didn’t believe Teach could do that. She couldn’t blame them. And she knew that even if she says no, she will be treated as enemy since no one knew her. So the only thing she did was break into run, passing by the crew, taking every possible chance of freedom to run away.
“Hey! Wait!” She heard voices behind and she paced up.
She was never good at running, yet she was good at turning around the corners to get rid of the ones following her. Looking behind, she chirped when she saw Ace and Marco right on her toes, both in their Devil Fruits’ form. Looking back in front she made few more turns before finding doors that were open. Taking a bet, she ran in before running through second doors and into closet, pulling her legs close to her. She held her breath when she heard doors opening, voices and footsteps getting closer.
“Where the hell did she go?” Ace cursed, close to the closet.
“She couldn't just disappear.” Vista frowned.
“I can't feel her presence anymore.” Marco spoke, standing right in front of closet.
Arina’s hands were over her head as she shivered, her eyes closed, hoping they will leave soon.
“Did she jump through window?” Izo asked.
“This late at night?” Vista asked. “I doubt it. We are in the middle of nowhere, with no island anywhere close. It is impossible to reach island unless you want to be food for Sea Kings.” He said.
“Vista is right.” Marco agreed. “She can't hide forever.” He continued. “Sooner or later she’ll be hungry and will have to come out.” He said and walked away from the closet. “Don't stop looking around and make sure you pay attention to any little thing, no matter how odd.”
“Got it…” There were murmurs of acknowledgement as the footsteps neared the doors before they vanished.
Arina raised her head and looked towards closet doors, wondering if she should open to see if she was alone or wait for few minutes. And she decided to wait. Letting out a quiet sigh to calm down, she rested her chin on top of her knees, frowning at her hands that were still stained with blood.
How did I even end here? She thought to herself, frowning that her mother will throw another tantrum, knowing she was already gone longer than necessary. Why am I here though? She frowned as that was question, she had no idea how to answer to.
It was hours later, when everything was quiet that Arina decided to leave the closet. She quietly walked over to doors and leaned on, trying to hear any sound, but there was none. She opened the doors and peeked outside and down the hallway. No one was outside.
Taking a deep breath, she stepped out and looked around, wondering where should she go. She knew the ship was much bigger than it was seen and it made her anxious all over again when she realized she was near First Division rooms.
How can I get off the ship? She bit her lower lip and shook with head seconds later. Her eyes fell on a white dog that was suddenly standing in front, looking at her with his dark eyes. She squatted down slowly and reached out her hands, her palm upfront. “Hey, Stefan…” she called in quiet voice.
The dog started growling before it sniffed the hand, whining at the scent.
“Ah, I am sorry,” Arina pulled her hand away and wiped it in her shorts. “I still have blood on my hands…” she murmured and frowned when the scent only grew stronger. Looking back at Stefan, she continued. “Do you know where is Marco's room? I need to tell him something.” she smiled.
Stefan tilted his head before barking and walked away. Arina quietly straightened up and followed the dog all the while looking around, whenever she heard voices and footsteps from afar.
Stefan stopped in front of doors and looked at Arina, who leaned down and scratched him behind his ear. He nuzzled in her hand before barking once more. Arina smiled and opened the doors, peeking inside. Once she made sure there was no one inside, she walked in and closed the doors, but not completely.
Looking around she saw it was a cleaned room with papers on his desk beside a candle, but far enough, which was slowly burning. She quickly walked to the desk and took a pen and blank paper. Biting her lips, she narrowed her eyebrows before quickly writing down what she wanted. She heard Stefan letting out a whine, waking her from her daze. Looking to doors she heard voices in distance.
Putting pen down on the message, she looked around before deciding to leave the room. But the voices were nearer. She recognized Marco and Izo talking and cursed before deciding to hide under bed that was low and high enough to not be seen, yet she could still see from below.
“Stefan…” Marco called surprised, seeing the dog sitting in front of his room. “What are you doing here?” He asked and frowned when the said dog was growling before he walked away like he didn't want to stay.
“What’s with him?” Izo murmured confused.
“No idea…” Marco answered and opened his doors, frowning that they weren't completely closed as he was sure he did close them. “Tell me if there are any news about Thatch.” He looked at Izo, who nodded. Walking inside his room, he closed the doors behind and locked them when he saw pen and blood stained paper.
He narrowed his eyebrows and looked around. Arina quietly watched his feet before he walked to the desk and stood there for a moment. Marco took the paper and raised an eyebrow.
Teach is after Luffy -A
Marco read the message before looking around once again. He knew someone was in his room, but he couldn't point where. “How can I believe you when you are hiding?” He decided to speak, Arina closing her eyes, mentally slapping herself. “And what do you mean by Teach is after Luffy?” He asked.
Arina bit her lower lip, wondering if she should show herself. There were two choices, she knew. The moment she shows herself, Marco will either catch her and not listen to anything she says, or he will listen to her, but only after she was god-knows-where. Messing her hair, her attention was back on Marco, who walked to doors when there was a knock.
“Marco, Pops wants to talk with you.” It was Vista.
“Okay,” Marco nodded and looked behind one last time before leaving the room, closing the doors behind.
Arina quietly crawled from under bed and stood on her feet. She looked at desk and saw the message was still there. Quickly grabbing the pen, she wrote down her answers before deciding to leave the room. But she knew nowhere on the ship was as safe as in Marco's room.
She walked down the hallway, Stefan coming halfway to her aid. “Where is infirmary?” She asked in quiet voice.
Stefan turned around and continued walking. Arina followed him, slightly glad that he didn't attack her. Looking down at her feet, her hands on her back, she wondered if her mother was angry that she still wasn't home. It passed few hours since she appeared on Moby Dick with no idea why, less alone how.
Stefan looked at Arina, who let out a sigh, before he stopped in front of infirmary. He nuzzled his nose in her leg, making her smile before she slowly opened the doors. She peeked inside, hearing voices deep in the room before completely disappearing inside.
Looking around, her eyes fell on Thatch, who was lying on bed, his chest wrapped in bandages and oxygen mask on his mouth. She looked towards doors, where a shadow appeared and quickly hid behind bed. Listening to the footsteps that walked from one side to the other, Arina decided to look and saw a short dark haired woman, dressed in pink short dress and thigh high socks.
A nurse… She frowned and sighed before hiding deeper into the shadow.
“How is he?” A female voice spoke from the other side.
“Everything seems to be fine.” The dark haired woman answered. “I am actually surprised. That maroon haired woman was holding onto the wound tight; she knew what she was doing.”
Arina frowned.
“I heard she stabbed him.” The other said in confusion.
“She had no armour or anything sharp beside her.” Third voice spoke, also female. “I’m more curious as to how did she know and who exactly is she. If we were just few minutes later, we wouldn't be able to help Thatch anymore. He’s lucky he’s alive.” she said, Arina looking in front, at her feet.
“Did they find her already?” The first one asked.
“No,” The third answered. “The whole ship was searched through from the lowest possible part to the crow’s nest, but there’s no trace after her.” She said and sighed. “Everyone is starting to think that she was nothing but a ghost, haunted ghost.”
“She was real,” The second one argued. “When I came into Thatch's room, she was there, Marco tried to get her attention, but she kept staring at Thatch. I could see she was pale, but she was real.”  She said.
Arina smiled. A ghost, huh… She wondered and leaned her chin on her knees. If only I were a ghost at home. She raised her gaze and saw shadows moving once again, footsteps and voices becoming distant once again. She looked at her hands that were still stained with blood. I need to change or at least clean up. She frowned.
Leaning on the wall with her legs against her chest, Arina kept dozing off, but woke up every time she heard footsteps. She knew the nurses kept coming to check up on Thatch and eventually even Stefan came inside when one of the Commanders came to check up on his brother.
It was towards the morning, when first rays of sun shone inside and straight on the teen that she completely woke up. She stretched her arms and let out a yawn before looking around to see what was going on. She immediately spotted Ace, sitting on the chair beside and leaning on bed, his face towards Thatch.
Standing up, she dusted her shorts and looked at Thatch, whose eyes were open and he was looking right at her. She startled and looked around, not knowing what to do. Looking back at him, she took a step forward and looked over him.
“Are you in pain?” She asked quietly and watched him almost unnoticeable shaking his head. A small smile graced her lips. “You’re going to be fine.” She said and looked at Ace, who stirred in his sleep.
“Who…are you?” Thatch asked in hoarse voice, making Arina fix her gaze back on him. He knew she was the one that found him.
“Arina,” She answered.
“I haven't…seen you before…” he spoke and moved his mask down so he could talk more comfortably.
“You could say that I’m your guardian angel.” She grinned, making Thatch half smile. “Do you remember anything?” She asked in gentle voice.
Thatch's grin disappeared. “Teach…” He murmured, giving Arina everything she needed to know.
The teen nodded knowingly. “Now that you’re fine and okay, I’m going to find another place to hide.” She grinned, confusing the Fourth Commander. “At the moment I’m not really welcomed on this ship.” She said and turned around to leave.
Thatch quietly watched her back before his eyes fell on Stefan, who followed behind. He frowned as there was something that caught his attention. Her clothes were still stained with blood, but dried, but despite that, there were bruises on her shoulder that were darker under her top. His eyes fell on Ace, who straightened up, rubbing his eyes.
“Yo, fire boy,” Thatch grinned when he saw the shock that crossed Ace’s face before he fell off the chair. “Now that’s offensive.”
Note
"send me a ship" saboace and marcoace, or mas if you havent done that already? ty
Sorry this took a while!!  As you can see I got a bit carried away on some of them.
I hope you don’t mind I just do MAS it would have taken me too long to do all three and I probably would have lost steam.  I really went off the rails on this first one. What can I say, I love my werewolf aus. Okay, okay, so, like…I got into all of them really.  I love AUS okay!!
(it’s long so I’m gonna put it all under a cut)
who’s the werewolf and who’s the hunter
Okay so there are four classes:
Human - Average humans are generally clueless of the underground supernatural network.
Hunter - Hunters track down and often eliminate with extreme prejudice.
SOI (Supernatural Occurrence Investigator) - SOI, investigates any violent deaths that have supernatural connections to put away or in extreme cases, kill any rogue creatures who kill for pleasure. Or those who risk outing other creatures. They generally helps dissuade some hunters  but for the most part the two are still at odds with one another.
Supernatural creature - And of course creatures which consist of various beings such as werewolves, vampires, harpies and more. They all have an underground society in a sense.
Sabo is a human.  He is not apart of a hunting family but they do support hunters in various ways.Ace is, of course, the werewolf.  A born werewolf, which is not common now-a-days since born are the only ones who can “infect” another individual on any given time when means they’re hunted vigorously.Marco a member of SOI.  His family is big and filled with supernatural being and human.  So he does the one thing he can to help insure a safer life for both parties of his family.
Sabo learned about the supernatural through Ace, which means it was very limited.  Ace had been taken away as a baby and raised away from his kind by humans.  So everything Ace learned about himself, he had to do on his own.  Rouge was a born werewolf and Roger was a bitten but Rouge was killed by a hunter as well as Roger but he was able to bargain with the lingering hunter (Garp) to take care of their son.  No child deserved to be killed just because of what he is after all.
Like in canon Sabo isn’t happy at home and runs off on a daily basis into the woods on the edge of town where he meets Ace.  It doesn’t take long for them to form their strong bond and for Ace to divulge what he is. (Luffy joins in somewhere in there, he’s half dragon, I know, pretty ironic for his dad). Unfortunately, when Sabo’s father looks into where his son keeps running off to, it doesn’t take much for the people he sends to figure out what Ace is.  He is young and reckless after all.
When they attack Ace, (this is where Ace learns about hunters and Sabo learns his family’s connection to them) they all run off across the mountain and into New World City (idk man).  They stick pretty close to the woods still but live in the city.  Ace works at a bar and picks up odd jobs on the side, Sabo works part time while still going to school.  Luffy goes to school for the most part.
At some point another werewolf gets wind of the family Sabo had once belonged and to him, once associated with hunters, always so.  And goes to attack Sabo.  This is where Marco shows up, dragging Sabo out of danger but before he can confront the rogue werewolf Ace appears to fight and eventually chase him off.  Of course he instantly turns on Marco but Sabo is quick to intervene because, come on Ace, it’s rude to threaten someone who saved me.
When Marco asks for a registry Ace only has his ID because he’s completely clueless about what else this Soy guy (SOI) is asking for. Marco is assuming Ace is bitten and the underground society try their best to find each one and keep tabs on them to help them through the first rough patches and to prevent them from hurt anyone or drawing in hunters attention.  Most born have better control by the time their five then most first bitten do at any age. So they avoid this kind of attention, not to mention even in among various SOI districts, born werewolves cause many concern if they go around changing others.
Being clueless to anything supernatural really, Marco is now stuck explaining their whole world basically to this cute werewolf and equally cute human friend.  You know what, this could take a while, lets do it over some coffee.  I know a witch that brews the best vanilla latte.
who’s the mermaid and who’s the fisherman
Ten year of age is when Sabo and Ace decide they will try to become proper fishermen.  Going out early in the morning in a small boat out of shore no one ever uses. Sabo, who is more academically inclined has read up on it. He feels like he’ll get the hang of it just fine. And they do alright for kids the first time around. Sabo is, though he won’t admit it, a little surprised and jealous that Ace does better than him. Ace has a lot of patience when it comes to hunting, looks like fishing is no different.
Sometimes Ace gets paranoid, insists someone is watching them. He was more ‘in tune’ with his instincts, or so he says. Sabo is quick to roll his eyes except when they’re out on the water. Mainly because sometimes he feels it too. It wasn’t until the weather turned bad in seconds and the waves rolls beneath them that they realized how correct Ace was. They’re both excellent swimmers but when Ace is knocked out of the boat and doesn’t resurface, Sabo panics. He wants to dive in after him but their small boat is pushed to the rocks.
Boatless and now stuck on jagged rocks he feels utterly helpless. Throwing caution into the wind, he’s ten seconds from trying to clear the waves that will smash him back into the rocks when two bodies are thrown right on him.  Ace is there, he’s okay, he’s coughing which means he’s breathing.  This new blond kid is there too, he must have saved Ace and he’s so, so grateful and holy shit is that tail?!
And so it starts, the two boys and their mermaid friend, Marco. Marco who helps them fish and sits on their boat with them and swims with them.  Who shares stories of the ocean, the creatures there, his large family of other mermaids. He describes them and they’re all so different. But Sabo and Ace hope to meet them someday, even his father, who is as large as a whale Marco says.
In turn Sabo and Ace sit with Marco on the shore. They tell him of their lives, their little brother and his friends. They tell him the troubles of humans but the small good things to come to them as well. Sabo talks about his parent’s selfishness and how sad he is with them. Ace doesn’t talk about his family who is no longer around anyways. Sabo explains that the reason Ace seems so angry is because he is used an an outlet because of who is father is. Ace is angry because he’s hurt. Being hurt is a concept all three of them know too well.
Neither of them can really place as they grew up just when they fell in love.
who’s the witch and who’s the familiar
Sabo is the witch and Ace is the most frustrating familiar to have ever existed. Sabo is sure he accidentally cursed himself instead when he happened upon Ace, who came from out of nowhere it seemed. From his reading, familiars are suppose to be your guide, he is sure he didn’t summon a demon or a fairy, or at least Ace claims he isn’t. But a good portion of the time Ace is less than helpful. That’s not to say he doesn’t try, because he does and that in sort is part of the problem. In terms of protection it was something Ace could never let him down on.  Magic however was a whole other story.
The best or worst, they’re not really sure which, case was when Sabo made to summon a bird to carry messages long distances for him and with Ace’s help he accidentally summoned and entrapped and very shocked phoenix instead. One thing Ace had excelled in, was elemental magic, more specifically fire. Sabo reasons that might have had something to do with the frustrated fire bird now bound to him. They are both very apologetic and struggled to find an incantation to break the bond.
Not that either of them would admit it but they were surprised when the phoenix, Marco, transformed with a burst of beautiful blue flames into an equally beautiful man. Sabo scolds himself for being surprised considering Ace is constantly shifting forms on a regular basis. Even with the extra set of eyes Marco provided it took them a whole month to break the bond. By then Marco was no longer angry and Ace and Sabo were sad to see him go.
They had only sulked about it for a week when Marco reappeared. He couldn’t in good conscious leave them alone after all, not when both of them had so much to learn. Marco was no longer bonded and was free to come and go as he pleased. Sabo and Ace were happy that their little hut on the mountain was one of the places he went to the most.
who’s the barista and who’s the coffee addict
With Ace’s medication he can’t have caffeine, or at least he’s not suppose to.   Not suppose to have it aside, medication be damned on rare occasions he can’t help but down a huge cup of Izo’s special vanilla latte. (This action is always followed with regret, will he ever learn?) It’s why being a barista is such a confusing choice for him but he love it.  Marco, his co-worker, is addicted.  Family is in a constant state of worry, has anyone checked his resting heart rate?  No way it’s normal. But that’s just how it is a The Whitebeard Cafe.
No one rivals Marco’s coffee intake, no one but Sabo from Revolution Books across the street.  He always comes in during Marco or Ace’s shift.  He stays longer if both of them are there.  They all assume he is ordering a bunch of coffee for his co-workers.  However he’s been here chatting with Marco and Ace for the past ten minutes, he finished one cup and is now drinking another. He’s eaten two of the pastries. Did he notice with Ace ate the third?  Does he care?  Does he even realize there are more than two people working here.
Thatch and Izo are very embarrassed over Marco swooning so helplessly and Ace, the blind dork. Ace is so oblivious or these two people openly flirting with him the entire time. Izo is getting real tired of Ace sulking, pretending to be happy that Sabo and Marco make such a perfect fit.  Goddammit Ace, do you use your eyes?
Koala is getting really tired of Sabo coming back just seconds before his break ends with no pastries AGAIN and her coffee half gone.  One of these days she’s gonna have to go get them herself and see just who these two “perfect” guys her idiot is fawning over.
who’s the professor and who’s the TA
Ace is the professor. He is spacey and his organization skills appear to be a mess but he’s good at interacting with his students. Especially the ones that are having the toughest time because he was there too. He complains about the workload all the time and complains that it’s never quiet but he really loves it.
Marco is in the class next door who is completely dedicated and professional and everything is in chaos. His desk is somehow even worst than Ace’s. Only there is no order among it. While class is in Ace has a tendency to be sitting in the back of the class. No one know when or how he even got there, how can a teacher be so sneaky? Don’t you have your own class to teach?
Sabo is almost a cryptid. Is he a TA for Ace or is he here for Marco? Sometimes he’s there and sometimes he isn’t and the students are left questioning if he’s even real. One student has a friend who goes to another university and she claims she’s seen Sabo there. There are no pictures and somehow whenever someone tries to sneak one something obstructs it.  There is a whole club now.
who’s the knight and who’s the prince(ss)
They’re all prince’s!! Marco the Prince of Moby. Sabo the prince of Goa.  And Ace the prince of the ruined kingdom of Oro.
Queen Rouge ran away with her son and found refuge in the mountain that bordered the Goa kingdom where she was able to raise her son in secret.  Prince Sabo ran away at a young age, found Ace and they quickly became the best and only friends they ever knew.  But of course being a prince makes it much harder for Sabo to run away and he goes back willingly after his father started sending out parties to look for him.  Ace told Sabo who he was and in return Sabo did the same and so to protect Ace’s identity he went back.
Of course Ace wouldn’t just have that and later trained the the toxic kingdom to become a knight.  Specifically to be apart of Prince Sabo’s royal guard.  Sabo wasn’t happy of course, at least at first.  (Rouge was really not happy but she knew she couldn’t stop her son.) But Sabo being the prince has some sway and was able to keep Ace as close to him as possible.  Ace is knighted and honestly, neither of them are really happy about it but Ace had reached his goal. Just in time to watch as Sabo’s father starts looking for suitors for his son.
In comes Marco, the prince of Moby who is here on behalf of his father to see if they could strike up a trading route between the two kingdoms.  This is where he meets the handsome, prince with his sad smile and the stoic and equally beautiful knight.  As Marco tries to strike a deal with the impossibly frustrating king, he gets to know Sabo and Ace.  Gets to know how Sabo dreads the arranged marriage.  To witness the small, almost unnoticeable affectionate touches between prince and knight
He’s caught off guard when Ace asks what he thinks of the once proud kingdom of Oro.  He answers honestly, that he remembers vivid warm colors, laughter, the busy market , a boisterous king and beautiful queen.  He tells Ace and Sabo who listens in closely that he remembers that above everything he remembers the people were happy under king Roger’s rule.  He remarks that it’s a shame that he was burned like it was and that he hoped one day it will be taken away from Akainu’s tyrannical rule.  He’s confused when Ace leaves silently and Sabo smiling, still facing the book he had been ‘studying’.
When Marco is set to take his leave, the negotiations failing to have gone anywhere, he makes the most of his last private time with Sabo and Ace.  He tells them quietly to wait ten days from his departure, to gather the minimum.  He tells them that they don’t have to say goodbye forever, that in ten days he will be waiting in the small village of Foosha.  Ace and Sabo listen as he tells them that Moby is accepting of all those in need of a place and a fresh start no matter who they are or the families they once belonged too. And in ten days Goa was without it’s prince and his loyal knight.
who’s the teacher and who’s the single parent
Sabo is the teacher. It’s messy and the children are loud but he love his job with all his heart.
Ace isn’t a single parent but he’s treated like it.  People generally give him pity looks, must have been a teen parent? Where is the mother they wonder but never pry.  But it’s not like that Ace is taking care of his adopted little brother because he’s guardians do a piss poor job honestly. So he took Luffy and struggles to get him to school on time, more or not making himself late for his own classes.
Marco is a dad in all but blood. He watches carefully and cleans up after Thatch’s cooking adventures. Lets Izo paint his face in makeup from cheap glittery pink cases. Marco struggles to keep Namur from drowning himself in the park fountain and Haruta from stuffing her pockets full of frogs. He gets all four of them to school before work and picks them up from his father’s home after.
And when Haruta gets into a fight at school he patiently waits with the kind teacher while the other kid and his parents run late.  Haruta is left to play with the toys in the classroom and Marco is left to chat with the teacher who apologizes for the other’s lateness. It doesn’t take a genius to know that the kid Haruta fought with got in trouble a lot for the teacher, Sabo he insisted to know the other enough to apologize for them.
Only Marco seems to be startled when the door burst open with a young man struggling to catch his breath and a child slung under his arm. Of course Marco, the private of his own mind thinks how unfair it is that both teacher and this man are incredibly cute. He’s even more surprised when the child is thrusted forward and made to apologize for stealing Haruta’s food and the kid, Luffy, does so eagerly with a genuine smile that rivals the sun.
When Haruta accepts the apology in seconds, all three adults are left while the two children begin to play.  Marco feels like he got almost too worked up over the possibilities and now it seems like a waste to be here but he can’t bring himself to pull Haruta away from Luffy in the middle of their game. He finds it really nice when all three adults sit down to talk and when he walks away with a promise to see them another time he can’t help but think this is the best student/teacher meeting he ever had.
who’s the writer and who’s the editor
Sabo is the writer and Marco is his editor.  They’ve been working to get this book done, long hours and hard work put into every sentence written and edited. The amount of caffeine share between them as they’ve gone over things is staggering.  They’re almost done just a few things here and there corrected.  This taken out while this put back in only to be taken out and then revised.
Ace is the best friend who throws out ideas, a lot of them are brushed aside, some are taken into consideration.  And sometimes he’ll ask a question and Sabo finds himself at 3am, downing his third cup of coffee and completely rewriting chapter twelve. Marco slightly concerned when Sabo shows him the new and improved chapter with bloodshot eyes and hair wild until he sees Ace casually strolling behind him. Then it clicks, of course and he takes the chapter from Sabo’s clammy hands and forces him to take a nap on his couch.
And there you have it.  I hope you enjoyed them!
Our Loving Angel (ch.9)
Fanfiction | AO3
After spending the summer adjusting to their home, the school year began and Luffy had it hit off with many people within the first month and gained more along the way. On the other hand, Ace and Sabo were having a hard time placing themselves as they were looked oddly upon. Though there was two people who first talked to Ace in interest of being friends and noticed Sabo came along with the package. Izo and Thatch liked Sabo, but they were still trying to figure him out since they knew someone similar to how the blond interacts, so it left them only feeling a bit awkward when alone with him for anything—not that he made much effort to socialize.
Currently like Izo's situation right now as he waits with the ever-quiet man sitting a comfortable distance, but not saying he was completely ignoring Izo. These points of time had Izo working hard to find a good conversation to start with as they waited for the two that had detention. Thatch and Ace didn't mean to get it, they had been caught up with something with three other troublemakers and accused of being part of the ploy. Not wanting to cause too much trouble, they willingly went to detention after school for the hour and half that it lasts.
"Nah, Sabo?" Izo begins, showing a trail of curiosity stringing in his voice as he gathers a hum and the tilt of the head. After just a minute longer, as Sabo had been reading, those green eyes drag to find him with a neutral look, but it was slightly aloof. "How exactly did you meet Ace? If you don't mind me asking, that is…" A look of slight searching is there before Sabo shifts to sit up a bit more and marking the book page with a thumb so it may rest to his lap closed on the finger.
"I do not mind…" A smile lingers along Sabo's lips and gives a short chuckle in remembrance. "It wasn't exactly what you would expect, but the first time we ever met he told me he hated my guts." Izo is surprised by those words and is on his way to speak, but Sabo gives a soft snort to stop him. "He hated everyone's guts when we were kids, to be fair." This information added has Izo nodding a bit more in understanding before crossing an arm over his crossed leg while the other arm moves for a hand to have fingers rest under his chin.
"I was about to say, I found that unfathomable as you two are really close." Izo mentions while smiling as it seems to please Sabo at the comment, and it always left the blond as a mystery to him. A soft chill runs up his spine at the slight breeze, noticing as fall really was seeming to come to an end in the next couple weeks. "Oh yes, you two should join our family for a Christmas Party, it won't be on the Eve or Day of, but the weekend beforehand." The words come out as Izo adjusts himself, fixing his sweater shirt he is wearing, choosing a light one but knew he would need to gather his heavier ones out soon.
"A Christmas Party?" Sabo inquires with an eyebrow raised, already knowing Ace would be on board with it completely without details. "I will ask my guardian, but I am sure he will be alright with it, especially since Ace will most likely be allowed." A nod of agreeance is there, Izo aware of the two's guardians associated from the last place they moved from and even lived next to each other now.
"I do have to warn, though, our other family members will be back as well. We have quite a bit of brothers and sisters, so if either of you need a minute it's not a big deal." Izo reassures, knowing his family—though not really by blood or even fully adopted—can be overbearing especially when it came to friends of any family member, which is how Bay and Doma got dragged to gatherings a lot as well.
"That is thoughtful, I appreciate it." Sabo mentions with a smile that Izo is used to never reaching his eyes, but it would if it was Ace. It had Izo ponder if it was because of the fact they have been friends for so long, maybe the blond had been like that in the beginning as well with Ace? Once they both getting past each other's exterior? Nothing about their childhood was ever brought up, but he knew by a slim chance of Ace speaking reassuring to Sabo about his scars that it was a big part of it. It was coincidental, Sabo seeming to have a low point and his friend was immediately catering to show his compassion while they were more in a private area.
"When you both come over and shown a tour of the home as most likely Haruta or Namur will be eager to," a soft chuckle leaves Izo at the thought alone and there is a short chortle of amusement leaving Sabo when remembering the first meeting the two freshmen. "Then I will comment on where to get the most private space, though someone might check on you."
"Again, it is greatly appreciated." Sabo continues with a tone showing he was, but those eyes stayed a clean slate of no actual meaning to his words, giving a show of not truly meaning it though he probably did in some way. Most could over look such a thing, but Izo had grown used to it as one of their brothers was sort of similar, but they had grown to Marco through childhood so it was second nature not to think on it with him.
"Did you see when Bonney freaked out about Kidd slamming her pie into Law's face?!" Thatch's voice rings through the air after the door to the school opens to let them out. A hand is hitting to Ace's arm and the two were busting up laughing again while trailing over to the two sitting and waiting.
"Took long enough!" Izo complains haughtily with his nose to the sky and earns a whine from Thatch before a grin of mischief.
"You really did miss me~!" It's clearly showing a string of being flirtatious and fully meaning it, unlike with others where he did for fun.
"As if," a huff leaves Izo with a soft blush lingering his cheeks, hating when the other was trying to be flirty towards him.
The two had been 'tip toeing' around each other as they live in the same home, different rooms, and were told that it would not be seen odd. That clearly embarrassed them both when their father pulled them aside during the summer before senior year to explain that they could only date once out of school. It was to play everything safe and let them test the waters as they may be 'family' but were not related or signed by legal documents as Thatch was a foster child, but Izo was considered a runaway that just happened to stay with them now after his home life was too bad to withstand.
"We are busy the weekend before Christmas!" Ace cheers as he is up next to Sabo and grinning widely in excitement.
"I heard," Sabo comments with endearing eyes glimmering to his friend and it shows a hint of yearning, having Izo question on the two's relationship. It especially raised questions as Ace was showing a similar longing within dark eyes, but the two were merely smiling to one another.
"We should wear matching sweaters!" Ace suggests, gaining a chuckle from the blond who is enjoying the way Ace flops next to him on the water fountain ledge, the fountain bare of water as it was turned off.
"No fair! You told me no!" Thatch complains, gaining Ace to kick legs out with a laugh and throwing an arm around Sabo's shoulders. Hands shifted, losing place in the book, but not one reaction was there of such a thing bothering him as he let himself be pulled closer.
"That's because Sabo would like my sweater idea better!" Ace points out his free hand in explanation and gains a snort from Sabo.
"All ugly Christmas sweaters are the same to me." The blond explains, gaining a laugh from them all and Ace keeps his arm in place before letting it slip behind the other for a small lingering touch. Though, it only lasted for a mere moment before he was leaning forward to stick his tongue out at Thatch.
"Jealous!"
"Well, of course! Here I thought I was your best friend!" A feigned expression of hurt lingers with a hand to a forehead and Thatch leans back to the side more to make an exasperated noise. "Blasphemy!"
"You are my best friend, Thatch!" Ace yells up with laughter and it suddenly felt like all systems shut off as Sabo stares to his friend, schooling his face perfectly as that of neutrality.
Inside, Sabo is raising in panic on how suddenly someone else could be in the same place as him. It was unheard of and caused a mild panic to linger in his veins as they thrummed loudly in his ears. A feeling stirs as he looks to Thatch with a slight clench of his jaw, not understanding how he could be placed in such a spot. It made Sabo want to make that known fact disappear, but wasn't sure how to do that as his first thought is to make said man disappear. Though, he couldn't as he held back that side of him since Thatch isn't a threat on being too close as he had those amber eyes at Izo for something more, though they never admitted to such things.
"We should head to that karaoke place!" Thatch suggests after he was happy to know that he was seen as such with Ace, no one noticing the inner turmoil in Sabo.
"Sounds fun!" Ace hops up in a chirp of excitement, Izo getting up to brush off his long skirt that he loves to wear—which when he started to wear such things took Thatch to make anyone back off. Sure, some people still poked fun at his choice to dress more comfortably with women's clothes, but they didn't push too much as they were a part of the Newgate family, and no one liked messing with that family.
"Could we not wager this time?" Izo asks in exasperation as Ace and Thatch usually start a song battle, hard to judge when they knew Ace would always get a definite vote.
"No promises!" Thatch comments while moving up to him and then Ace was gripping to Sabo's hand.
"Come on~!" Ace is grinning brightly and Sabo makes sure the other can't tell how bothered he is by what he had just heard, letting himself smile.
"Impatient as ever." The words linger as he stands and lets the hand tug him lightly before it lets go. "You should sing that one song again…" Sabo suggests as he gets his book into his sling of a bag and Ace is right next to him as they trail behind the other two that begin bickering—Thatch mostly teasing.
"What? The one by Hozier?" Ace questions and gets a smile in return, having him show a brilliant one back with a bump against the blond. "But you sing it way better, Sabo." The comment has green eyes flicker in surprise and a dusting of pink finds its way to rest along cheeks. "You should really sing it, you would win any of these battles, hands down." Ace keeps on, causing Sabo to stir in delight at the compliments and having to swallow thickly.
"But the way your voice dips makes it better," Sabo starts back as he craves to see a stirring in the other that only he knew how to draw out perfectly if he does it well enough. Confusion is showing lightly with a tilt of Ace's head and this is when Sabo smirks. "Plus, the way you make a throaty growl with those deeper notes, it makes everything better." It does as he predicts, freckled cheeks flushing with eyes dilating somewhat and a scowl shows as Ace is pleased with such things said.
"I don't get why you like that stupid gravelling noise." It's a show of a pout and clearly shy about the compliments.
"Because I enjoy the sound, protective and enticing." The words spill from Sabo, biting the inside of his cheek as he didn't mean for that to come out. He is pleasantly surprised though as he hears a soft whine, barely audible if it weren't for the fact he lingered next to his friend. Chancing it, green eyes flicker to notice Ace pursing lips with red cheeks and looking away as some shaky breaths comes from nostrils.
The sight pleases Sabo as his veins thrum for more.
Characters: Portgas D. Ace
Song Inspiration: Jenny by Studio Killers
Work count: 4.2k (I was not expecting it to be this long)
Notes: Part 2 of the one shot, hehe it’s a little longer than the first i hoped y’all like it. Sorry it took so long I was not expect 2 book reports and 2 essays to be assigned 🤬🔫
━━☆⌒*.
“...Ace, if I go on one....more rollercoaster, I think Imma...puke.” (Y/n) groaned as she stumbled over to a bench. Ace watched her, her hair a mess and her face flush from the excitement. For the whole mess she looked like, Ace found it so cute. He let out a loud laugh, taking a seat right next to her.
“Giving up so soon? I thought you’d have more in you.” Ace teased. (Y/n) shot a glare over at him but she couldn’t help but let a smile brush across her lips.
“Oi, shut up! I’m not built like a monster like you. And plus-“ (Y/n) leaned back on the bench as her stomach let out a low growl. She let out a soft whimper and placed a hand on her stomach before looking back at Ace, “-plus. I’m hungry. I wanna eat something.”
“I saw a hot dog stand just around the corner. Let’s stop there.” Ace laughed, standing back up. (Y/n) watched him for a moment, trying to calm herself down at but from the rollercoaster they just went on. It had to be their 4th rollercoaster in a row, she was just surprised with how casual Ace still seems to be acting. With a small scoff from her lips, she jumped up and intertwined their fingers once again.
“A hot dog doesn’t sound too bad.” She smiled leading the 2 of them to the food stand. Ace smiled down at her while the 2 of them walked hand in hand through the crowded park. Today was possibly the best day ever in Ace’s eyes, nothing could ruin today. The weather was perfect: not a cloud in the sky nor a chilly breeze. The park was amazing: not too many people nor long lines. And of course the best part of all: that fact that he’s going on a date with his best friend. Nothing could be better than this. After Ace got over his shyness and awkwardness, everything began to flow smoothly. The conversations came naturally and there seemed to be no conflict between the 2 when it came to activities. It was almost like the 2 were hanging out as friends but with all the hand-holding and the way Ace’s heart still raced in his chest, it made him remember it was a date. It also made him realize just how hard he has fallen for her.
“After this let’s go play some games.” (Y/n) had exclaimed as she squeezed his hand to get his attention. Glancing down at her, Ace followed her pointing her finger over at a row of games, “I wanna win a really big bear.”
“No more rides?”
“Ace if I go on another ride I will puke all over you,” (Y/n) said in a dumbfounded tone as she looked up at her date. Still hand and hand they made their way to an empty table. As (Y/n) took a seat pointed over to the stand and smiled, “Now Ace, go get me a hot dog!”
“Huh? You can’t get it?”
“Nope, it’s the man's job to buy their date a hot dog. It’s the first rule of dating.” (Y/n) exclaimed. Ace's face flushed red before he made his way over to the stand to order. Once Ace got them both a meal he went back to (Y/n) and let out a scoff as he saw (Y/n)'s eyes light up at the sight of food.
“I don’t think I’d ever been this excited to eat a hot dog.”
“So you really didn’t eat before coming here?”
“Of course not. Knowing you, you’d wanna go on a lot of rides so I tried not to eat anything that would upset me.” (Y/n) explained as she took a bit out of her food and hummed happily. Ace froze for a moment as he watched her eat. It was always the little things that made Ace fall for her. Even if she did it for herself, the fact that she thought of him was enough to make his heart explode. With the rush of shivers that ran through his body, he opened his mouth to speak but he caught his breath before he could say anything. He had a plan, well more like Macro and Thatch had a plan, for how Ace would confess. The 2 of you would spend the day together riding rides, playing games, eating junk food, and taking pictures, silly and cute ones. Basically, stuff the 2 of them would normally do together, and then at the end of the day is when Ace would confess. The park plans a huge firework show once every few months, so what would be a better place to confess than a huge firework show. The plan was simple and flawless, the only problem is waiting to see if it goes that way. He felt confident though, the date has been going smoothly so far. He hasn’t seen anyone who knew them or hasn’t run into any problems, with (Y/n) or anyone else. It was going well, nothing seemed to be getting in the way...
But of course, he spoke too soon. As the 2 of them finished their meal and began to ball up their trash, a loud voice called out to them. (Y/n) was the first to perk up and turn around to search. Ace immediately cringed as he recognized the voice. He’s totally jinxed their date.
“Ace, (Y/n) !!”
“Oh! Luffy, Sabo! I didn’t expect you 2 to be here.” (Y/n) called out as she waved back to the 2 approaching boys. Luffy and Sabo were quick to make their way over to Ace and (Y/n)'s side. As soon as Luffy took a spot next to (Y/n) and Sabo took a spot next to Ace, Luffy and (Y/n) already began to laugh.
“Pfftt...Lu-chan what are you even wearing? That headband seems very-“
“Shishishi, isn’t cool!! I beat Sabo and won it.” Luffy cheered as he smiled brightly at (Y/n) and place a hand on the strange hat he won. Now that he mentions it, (Y/n) does remember seeing those hats at the front. It would be a lie to say that winning one of those didn’t cross her mind, but she figured that she would force Ace to win her on one the way out like a boyfriend should do.
“Luffy beat you? Lu-chan must’ve been going easy on you.” (Y/n) teased as her eyes glazed over to the older blonde. Sabo tensed up and shook his head, trying to hide his embarrassment.
“It was dumb luck. I was winning but he came in and won instead. My hand simply slipped.” Sabo explained to cover up his embarrassment. (Y/n) scoffed as she raised an eyebrow at Sabo, who stared down at her. He knew (Y/n) was gonna say something, she always says some type of remark. Just like Ace, Sabo also met (Y/n) in one of his classes. They easily got along and it wasn’t until later on did (Y/n) learn that he was Ace’s brother. That was probably the moment Ace realized he fell. To him, family is extremely important to him and of course, his lover must like his family. So when Ace learned about how well she got along with Sabo, he knew he fell. Ace watched too, wondering if (Y/n) was gonna say anything and she was because she opened her mouth but was quickly cut off by Luffy again. He grabbed her attention and began to talk about who knows what. Sabo seemed to be interested in the conversation but he was pulled away when Ace spoke up. Ace still found it hard to believe, out of all the days, why did Sabo and Luffy have to come today. Out of all the days, why today? It was no lie that it made him frustrated. This day was just supposed to be him and (Y/n) and now Sabo and Luffy showed up. He’s not stupid either, he knows what going to happen next now that they ran into the 2, and it made him upset but he knows that the 2 of them mean no harm, it was simply just a coincidence.
“What are you 2 doing here?” Ace asked, trying his best to not sound upset, although it wasn’t really working. Sabo was quick to catch onto the tone in his voice but for the sake of Luffy and (Y/n) in front of them, he decided not to call him out on it.
“Nothing much.” Sabo shrugged, “I had a day off and Luffy wanted to come. Although we didn’t know you’d be here today, especially with (Y/n). I thought you were busy?”
“...I am.” Ace hesitated as he looked over at (Y/n) who continued to laugh with Luffy about something. The way her whole body would jiggle when she laughed, and the way she would put a hand on the other person’s arm, and the way her laugh echoed through the area, it was all things Ace knew all too well. No matter how many times he looks at her, he just keeps finding more reasons to fall in love. Sabo followed his gaze and looked at (Y/n) before looking back at Ace and the blush that not so subtly covered his cheeks. He’s had his speculation about Ace’s crush on (Y/n) for a while now, and seeing how he can finally connect the pieces, he understood why Ace was busy and it didn’t help that Luffy and he interrupted it.
“Oh.” Sabo hummed as he shifted in his seat grabbing Luffy and (Y/n)'s attention. It was Sabo’s and Luffy’s cue to finally leave Ace and (Y/n) alone to enjoy the rest of their date. It would be a lie to say that he wanted to leave, in all honesty, he wanted to watch Ace go on this date. It’s been so long since Ace has found someone that actually gave him butterflies in his stomach but Sabo respected Ace’s wish. The one he really had to worry about was Luffy, he’s definitely one to not read between the lines, thus this is where Sabo comes in, “Luffy, come on let's go. We should leave Ace and (Y-”
“No!! I still wanna go on some rides with her!” Luffy exclaimed as he jumped up out of his seat and grabbed (Y/n)'s hand. She yelps from the sudden force, causing Ace and Sabo to jump up alongside her to make sure she doesn’t fall. Although she didn’t have time to fall as she was quickly dragged behind Luffy as he pulled her to the next ride he wanted to do. (Y/n) looked back at the others with a worried yet apologetic look as she tried her best to regain her balance. She felt really bad leaving the Ace behind, it was just supposed to be him and her the whole day yet Luffy and Sabo just happened to appear. Even though they did appear, (Y/n) was just going to make a short conversation with them and move on. She was sure Ace had the same idea, but she should’ve known that Luffy was bound to do something. All (Y/n) could do now I hope that Luffy doesn’t stay long.
ミ☆
After a long day of being pulled around the park with a very energetic Luffy and going on almost all the rides, (Y/n) was ready to puke. Not only was she ready to puke she’s also ready to go back to Ace and hopefully end the day together, at least. Throughout the day, (Y/n) barely had any time with Ace because of Luffy. Ace and Sabo tried their best to try and keep up with the 2 but as soon as Ace and Sabo arrived at the ride Luffy had already dragged (Y/n) on it or to a different ride. So much for Ace and (Y/n)'s date, it might as well have been Luffy and (Y/n)'s date. However, Luffy finally began to crash near the end, letting Ace and Sabo finally catch up to the 2. At the moment, Luffy and (Y/n) sat at the front of the park talking about each of their favorite rides while Ace and Sabo made their way to them. Now don’t get her wrong, (Y/n) enjoyed the day with Luffy but she still felt really bad about leaving Ace behind. It was supposed to be their first date today yet they hardly spent any time together.
“I liked the roller coaster that spun around while we rode it. That one was probably my favorite. " (Y/n) explained as she recalled that ride. She made Luffy ride it at least 3 times.
“Shishishi. We rode it at least 3 times, you really did like it.”
“Of course, it was a lot better than those rides you made me ride with all the twists and turns. I’m surprised I last as long as I did, I was about to puke. You're worse than Ace.” (Y/n) exclaimed as she leaned back into the bench, she was happy to sit somewhere that didn’t move. All Luffy did was laugh. It was around sunset, the skies painted hues of pinks and purple with the moon threatening to take over the sky. To (Y/n), there was nothing special that’s going to happen now. She doesn’t know that there’s going to be a firework show tonight, so as far as she knows is that the 2 of them are waiting for Ace and Sabo to arrive so they can go home. Because she already spent most of the day with Luffy, she might as well go home with them and try to make up for the time she didn’t spend with Ace.
“Jeez, we finally caught up with you 2.” Sabo’s voice called out, as he and Ace approached the 2. Both Luffy and (Y/n) perked up when they heard his voice and as soon as (Y/n)'s eyes landed on Ace, she jumped up from her seat and joined him at his side.
“Ace! Your finally back.” (Y/n) cheered while she easily and quickly slipped her hand into his, sending chills down each of their spines. The blush that was missing from Ace’s face had now reappeared as he looked down at his supposed to be date. Sabo scoffed at the 2 of them and looked back down at Luffy.
“You didn’t drag (Y/n) on every ride, did you?”
“Shishishi, nope...” Luffy shook his head, letting Sabo release a relieved sigh but he was quick to suck it back in when Luffy spoke up again, “Some rides were closed and had too long of a line.”
“Thank god for those. Luffy was trying to kill me. We went on like ever ride.” (Y/n) sighed, looking over at Sabo before looking back up at Ace again, “And I can’t believe I thought you were bad. Luffy made me go on every ride without a break.”
“I almost feel bad for you but I told you how much of a handful he was.” Ace laughed. It was nice to finally see her again after a long day of having to chase after her.
“Almost?! Aww, Ace you're so mean.” (Y/n) playfully pouted. Sabo scoffed again as Luffy stood up and join him by his side. Sabo finally felt at ease, Ace was finally able to go back to the date he and (Y/n) were supposed to go on, even if it can only last for one more hour.
“Well seeing how you were supposed to come here with Ace only. I’ll take Luffy and leave the 2 of you alone.” Sabo quickly noticed the relieved look on (Y/n)'s face and could guess for 2 reasons why: One so she can actually enjoy her date with Ace and two, so she can get a break from Luffy. Luffy laughed once again and waved bye to Ace and (Y/n), they finally took off leaving the 2 alone after an extremely long day. As if in sync, Ace and (Y/n) both let out a sigh and looked at each other, and laughed. It was no lie that the 2 of them were finally happy to be alone with each other again, give or take the crowd around them.
“Well, I can proudly say I officially met the whole ASL trio.” (Y/n) chuckled as the 2 of them began to walk hand and hand to the lake that sat in the middle of the park.
“Heh, I did tell you Luffy was a handful. Although I probably wouldn’t make the 2 of you get to know each other at an amusement park.” Ace added, smiling down at (Y/n), “I bet you're pretty tired.”
“Ugh, Ace, that’s an understatement. I feel like I can sleep for days.” (Y/n) said as the 2 of them approached the lake. Ace scoffed at her comment, but then fell silent. All he did was looked down at (Y/n) who began to kick pieces of popcorn on the floor into the lake for the ducks to eat. He really wanted this day to be perfect yet Luffy seemed to come and interrupted that. It was so not how they thought the day would go. The 2 of them had hardly spent any time together, Ace just spent the day talking to Sabo about (Y/n) and tell him every reason why he fell in love. At least he was lucky enough to be with (Y/n) right before the fireworks and if all goes well this time, right before the fireworks Ace should confess his feelings.
“Sorry that Sabo and Luffy showed up. I didn’t know they were gonna be coming today.” Ace started drawing (Y/n)'s attention up to him. She took a moment to look up at him even if its dark outside, (Y/n) could still see the cute freckles that covered his face. Before any moment longer; not wanting to make Ace feel uncomfortable and shrugged her shoulders and smiled,
“Yeah, It was unexpected but I-”
“They ruined our dated.” Ace cut off (Y/n) as he hung his head low in guilt and frustration. It was already hard enough to figure out his feelings for her and now it’s just as hard to just ask her out. (Y/n) could completely understand how he feels, she was also so looking forward to his date but even if it was interrupted by Luffy and Sabo it still considered a date, just not a perfect one.
“They didn’t ruin anything.” (Y/n) scoffed, squeezing Ace’s hand pulling his attention over to her.
“It was supposed to be a date. With just me and you and yet-”
“-and yet, your brothers tagged along. There nothing wrong with that. We still rode some rides together, took pictures together, ate together, and did other couple-y stuff together. Your brothers just happened to be here.” (Y/n) explained as she recalled all the times the 4 of them did meet up with each other. Ace’s face seemed to soften a bit after hearing her explanation, “And plus, I don’t know about you but I think I'm finally ready to be apart of your crazy family. After the hell your brother put me through I better be apart of the family.”
That’s when Ace froze. He didn’t know what to do or what to even say. All he could do was repeat her, “...Apart of my.. family??”
“Well of course,” (Y/n) gave a firm nodded as she looked up into Ace’s eyes. As he stared right back down at her, he noticed there was a look of determination in them. It almost reminded him of the determination he had of making this date perfect, but that had to just be wishful thinking. (Y/n) couldn’t possibly know the plan behind the date. Seems like he was wrong, “All that’s left to do is confess to me, right? So whenever your ready Ace, I’ll give you my answer.”
“You...know? How’d you know??” Ace began to panic now. The plan was supposed to be kept secret and yet she seems to know all about it. He knows for a fact that Marco and Thatch didn’t tell her, they hardly even know her and as far as he knows, she was pretty good at keeping his feelings to himself, so how does (Y/n) know. She giggled as she inched closer to Ace, slowly closing the gap between them. Ace didn’t even notice, he was panicking too much.
“Ya’know Luffy doesn’t have a quiet mouth. Soooo, he ended up telling me. Well, he told me something along the lines. I figured out the rest.” (Y/n) smiled.
“Luffy told you?? God, he so stupid. How does he even know, I don’t remember even telling him anything about it. I’m mean I think I brought it up with Sabo but the only people who knew about it was-” Ace began to ramble on as the heat of embarrassment rushed through his body. He, no doubt, felt embarrassed. Luffy practically told (Y/n) that Ace like her. One more thing that Luffy did to ruin the day. Ace would’ve probably rambled on for a while too, not that (Y/n) didn’t minded. It was cute seeing Ace freak out and see the blush that covered his freckled cheeks, but if (Y/n) didn’t shut him up they would’ve gone nowhere. So while she wanted Ace to be the one to confess, it looks like (Y/n)'s just gonna have to step up for this one. (Y/n) doesn’t know what came over her when she thought of this idea but she has seen it happen in a lot of romcoms so why not try it in real life. Standing up on her tippy-toes, she closed the gap in-between them and connect their lips. Ace definitely froze now. This date is not going how he planned at all. The one he asked out is the one kissing him now.
(Y/n) had only planned to kiss Ace quickly and sweetly; a small peck on the lips to shut him up but things didn’t end up going that way Unknowingly to (Y/n) the fireworks began to go off right in the middle of their kiss. Gasping, her mouth slightly opened for just a moment and Ace was quick to take advantage of that. There wasn’t a lot he could control about this date but he knows that he can easily take control of this kiss. Now he’s taking full advantage of (Y/n). He knows that she’s hardly kissed anyone before so she’s inexperienced. He slipped his tongue into her mouth and began to dance around her mouth, taking his time and enjoying the feeling. (Y/n) face lit up in at least 10 different shades of red, this was definitely now how she imagined the kiss going but she enjoyed it. Her hands found the back of his neck while his hands found her waist. By now, there was no extra space between the 2. A small groan left Ace’s lips as the 2 of them continued to kiss. Fireworks continued to light up the sky, but the 2 of them didn’t even care. Ace probably could’ve kept the kiss going but after feeling a soft tug from (Y/n) on his shirt, he finally broke the kiss. As he leaned back he studied (Y/n)'s face. With the help of the bright flashes of light that illumined the sky, he could see the huge blush that covered her whole face: her cheeks, ears, and even neck. It was an amazing sight to see, especially after all the times (Y/n) had made Ace blush. He easily thought of it as payback, and seeing how he left her speechless he felt satisfied.
“I guess I don’t have to give you an answer anymore, do I?” Ace smirked as his strong arm continued to keep a tight hold around her waist. It still took (Y/n) a moment to regain her composer, the kiss was so unexpected and...amazing. There was no doubt that the feeling between the 2 is very much mutual.
“I...uh..A...a-after that kiss, if you don’t ask me to be your girlfriend now I might as well walk out of here empty-handed.” (Y/n) also kept her hands around her neck not wanting to let go of the warm body. Ace scoffed at her comment. Although the day didn’t go as plan at all, at least Ace was able to confess and not lose (Y/n). It filled him with so much indescribable happiness, he was going to be smiling for weeks. He closed the gap one last time, but this time with a tight hug. As he snuggled his face into the side of (Y/n)'s neck, she giggled feeling his black hair tickle her neck, “Ya’know, I guess we do owe it to Luffy. I mean, if he didn’t tell me then I wouldn’t have confessed either.”
“You? Confessed?”
“Mm-hm. I can’t tell you how long I’ve liked you. But I guess it was the same as you. I was scared to ruin what we already had.” (Y/n) explained as she nuzzled the nose into his hair as if she was trying to hide. Ace’s eyes widen at her explanation, turns out he hardly knows his best friend, “But, we really do have to make sure to thank Luffy.”
“I’ll make sure to beat him up later.” Ace muttered causing (Y/n) to erupt in laugher. Although, (Y/n) thought Ace was joking around Ace knows for a fact that he will beat him up for ruining their date, but he must give him credit at least. Even though Luffy didn’t mean to do anything, he ended up making this the best day ever.
Ace’s diary
This story are for the two blogs that have inspired me a lot. @empresskira and @marcoacesabo
I can’t remember when it happened, but it happened. Maybe it hit me slowly, as our friendship evolved and we completely trusted each other and always had each others back. I even was ‘adopted’ as their brother at some point, even before their adoptive father decided it, which he did when I first met him. Just like that, actually.
It was nice to suddenly be part of a family, as my own parents died when I was a child, 2 years old I think. I can vaguely remember their faces, they died in a fire in our home. A neighbor managed to save me, but my parents didn’t make it out. I was brought to a foster home and things wasn’t easy.
However, I got a little brother. Well, another boy was brought to the foster home when I was like 10. First we didn’t get along well, he was a brat - 7 years old - and a crybaby. Still, along the months, I grew fond of him and his bright smile. Even my best friend, who I adopted as brother, started to like him and we became inseparable.
I’m drifting off subject,  I could speak hours about my brothers. My friends can tell you it’s true. What I wanted to tell, is that I’m in love and have been so ever since college. In who, you ask? Well, it’s not that easy, as my heart loves two and not just two random people. No, I fell in love with my best friends, those I’ve come to see as brothers as well.
We met when I had to go to college, where I got a flatmate. Marco was going too, he was going to take over their adoptive father’s company one day. So he had to have knowledge of business and financial stuff. The blond even liked it. He was too stiff and too busy studying, which led to his brother Thatch coming one weekend and dragged him - and me - out for fun in town.
Thatch and I just clicked, we have the same type of heart. Both loving to prank, tease and have fun. Marco can be fun too, but I like him being the calm and quiet person. It’s like we are balanced out. This might be why I feel in love with both. Thatch was outgoing, always cheery, while Marco was slight introverted and had that soft smile on his lips.
A year passed before I realized my love for both. I told Sabo, him being my best friend and so. He advised me to wait it out, it could be a crush, but I know now it isn’t. It’s been 6 months and I’m still yearning for both. It’s weird, right? Me, who haven’t really dated, being in love with TWO great people. I still can’t believe it myself, but when I see them, I feel like I’m home.
Not being with them like I want to makes me crazy and it’s why I write down all this. To get it out somehow. It’s not like I can tell Thatch and Marco what I feel. Not in a million years. As far as I know, Thatch only likes women and Marco … I don’t’ know what he prefers, but they seem so normal, so I guess women too? Just because I’m gay, it doesn’t mean they have to be. I don’t think they know I am. I’ve never told them and I’ve tried to be careful with showing my true affection for them.
-x-
I’m confused. Like really. Why didn’t I see it? Well, I’m not the only one it took by surprise. Actually the whole family was surprised by it, but I was their closest friend. Then again, I’m keeping a secret from them too, so it’s just fair they didn’t tell me. You probably wonder what I’m talking about, right? Well, the thing is, Marco and Thatch are dating. Together. They are a couple and happy, it seems. Which only makes me feel miserable, but I’m happy for them too. I mean, they fit well together, I’ve always thought that, but hoped I would in the middle, fitting with them too.
I know, it’s not fait thinking like that, as the probability of me being with both men of my dream is pretty much zero. Still, I can dream, can’t I? Since I know I won’t fall in love with anyone else, they are my true love and I’ve lost. Probably for the best, as I don’t think I’m worth of love anyway. So why should I get lucky to be with two men at the same time?
Sabo tries to cheer me up every time he visits. He’s the only one I can talk about this with, though I have a feeling that Luffy knows something. Not that my precious sun says anything, he mostly just do his thing and cheer me up. The two of us never talk about deep thing, not like I do with Sabo. It’s nice to have both in my life, they have stuck with me through everything and they are the main reason I never gave up.
Now I’m just going to suffer in silence. Izo, one of the brothers introduced to me by Marco and Thatch, has started to suspect that something is up with me. Probably because I haven’t dated in a long time and I’ve been a little moody. Hopefully he’ll think it’s because I’m stressed, as mid-terms are over us and not because I haven’t been dating. He would just try to set me up, he knows a lot of people too.
Can you understand my misery now? I’m hopeless. Why did I fall in love with those two anyway?
-x-
I screwed up. Really big time. I’ve packed my stuff and I’ll be going soon. What I did … it is unforgivable. They’ll hate me, I just know that and it hurts, but as said, I screwed up. I just have to write this down, before burning the pages I’ve written so far. I don’t want to bring this … diary(?) with me. Too much pain was written in it, a pain I don’t want to think about.
The reason why I’ve called Sabo to come and get me and my stuff, is because of what happened last night. Marco was working – he’s some sort of intern in Oyaji’s company – and Thatch and I hang out at Thatch’s place. We didn’t feel like going out, but we did drink a few bottles of beers. At some point I got too drunk and started to flirt with Thatch. That is harmless, even the fact that he flirted back is harmless. It’s not why I’m leaving.
No, I’m leaving because I didn’t let it be with flirting. I wanted more. Ever restrain I had put on myself just were gone and I … I … I managed to get him into the bedroom and I think you know what happened there. So yes, I’m an idiot, no worse, I’m a demon. I shouldn’t have done it, I should have held back on the beers, I hadn’t been drunk in a long time.
I might have ruined Thatch’s and Marco’s relationship, just because I couldn’t hold back, I couldn’t keep my feeling down long enough to call it a night and go home, drowning myself in my feelings. No, I just had to let go off them and show him how I feel and to top it, I long for him even more now.
Sure, he also accepted what I did and he was just as eager, but maybe it’s because I’m a forbidden fruit.
Shit, I can see Marco’s car, I better go.
-x-
… Okay I don’t know what the hell happened now. I’m hyped, confused and happy. Yeah, I know that in my last entry it sounds like my world was just destroyed and I thought so. Really. You would have too, if it happened to you. Now, however, things are different. Let me tell you why.
Well, Marco got home, but not alone. Thatch was with him. Let me tell you, my heart raced and scenarios went through my head. I didn’t want to see them after what I’d done; I didn’t want to see their disappointment. Hell, I left Thatch’s home as soon as I woke, the other still fast asleep. I had hoped that Sabo would come before he woke, Thatch sleeps in long after a drunk night.
I just wanted to disappear, but I didn’t get a chance. Marco came in, serious face and all, saying we needed to talk. I almost panicked right there, saying I would leave and never come back. To my surprise, both Marco and Thatch looked hurt about it, but I couldn’t stay. Even if Thatch hadn’t told Marco what we did, it would sooner or later be out in the open. Something like that won’t stay hiding forever, especially not when I’m the one responsible for it.
Their next move totally caught me off guard and had my heart race even faster, but for a completely other reason than fear and insecurity. Marco had me pinned down onto his bed, his lips firmly pressed against mine, in what was a passionately kiss. My brain completely shut down, as I couldn’t progress what was going on. Thatch only chuckled, accusing Marco for breaking me.
When I calmed down, the two men of my dreams told me that they both wanted me, just as I wanted them. They had even giving each other the permission to do what Thatch and I had done, if the chance ever came. Thatch then told me just how drunk I’d been, as I had actually told him how I’d been in love with both of them for quite some while.
My face turned red of embarrassment, but also, because I was flustered by their words and love. Marco sat next to me, holding my hand and let his thumb go over it, while Thatch sat on the chair in front of me, a hand on my thigh. I couldn’t believe it, thinking it was all a dream, but it wasn’t. It isn’t.
I can now write that my dreams came true and I’m happily dating the loves of my life. Seems a drunken confession isn’t that bad after all.
Homesick
Also on AO3  Buy me a Coffee
Ace has been homesick for as long as he can remember.
It's a terrible feeling, being homesick, if you don't know where home is and only know where it is not. It's not here; not in the woods in a house with too many people and a blanket on the floor for a bed. It isn't in the scrap heap, nor is it in the city where people talk about how the king of the pirates got what he deserved. It is not, despite what Grandpa tries to tell him, in a navy barrack somewhere, surrounded by people who would execute him if they could read his blood like a book and see his family tree printed in it.
He begins to think he was born to be homesick; that it is a part of him as much as his blood and his freckles and his anger.
He doesn't know what he's angry at, but at least he always finds plenty of things to hit in response.
He’s usually angry at Grandpa, hates him sometimes, most times, and he wonders if he's capable of love, wonders if Roger was, if Roger’s blood hollowed out his heart before it had its first chance to beat.
He learns he can love when Sabo is gone, when he sees Luffy crying and he clenches his fists, thinking he will kill anything that dares to touch him, that threatens to take the one brother that remains. It's a terrible way to learn that he is capable of this feeling. Leave it to him to learn about the world’s favorite feeling by attaching barbs to it and letting it rip through his chest.
He doesn't love anyone else, he doesn’t think. There is some affection for Dadan, he will admit, privately, and there is a complicated tangle somewhere in his chest for Grandpa, but they are not Sabo and they are not Luffy and if it is love it isn’t the same sort.
He likes Makino. He doesn’t love her, but he likes her, and it’s simple, at least. He likes that she brings him presents and remembers his birthday when even Grandpa forgets sometimes, or else remembers but doesn't come.
A poisonous part of him - most of him is poison - wonders if she would still come if Luffy wasn't there. He will never find out and he will always wonder and he will never want to know.
He doesn't resent Luffy for it though. Luffy, somehow, has hollowed out a sanctuary in the poison and is never touched by the worst of it. The edges brush against him sometimes, but he never seems to notice. Ace is grateful for that. He can't poison Luffy the way he has everything else. He won’t allow himself to.
So he doesn't resent Luffy for the way everyone loves him and is dragged to him as though he’s a magnet, as though he is the center of the world’s gravity. It is not Luffy’s fault, and Ace can't think of anyone who deserves it more, and when he sets off in his little ship to become a pirate he thinks of that and knows that Luffy, when he leaves home in three years, will find a crew to look after him, because Luffy is so hard not to love. It makes it easier to leave, to not worry. He feels bad, debates about it a little, but as much as he loves Luffy, that homesickness is still tugging in his chest and he has to find a way to make it stop before it kills him.
He sets off onto the sea, still unbearably homesick day after day and he doesn't know where he's going, so he sets his sights on Raftel and a crown because sibling rivalry and everyone needs a goal anyway. Then, at least, everyone who hates him will have a reason to.
If Roger was alive, he wonders, would he have loved him? Or would Ace be a disappointment to him too?
You don't take after old Roger much.
It is not a compliment or an insult. Just a statement of fact. Garp always did use to say he took more after his mother, though Ace is pretty sure he just meant his looks. He thinks Pops might mean more. Look on your face when you came in here, I thought you had something important to say. No one had ever simply not cared. Sabo had stopped caring. Luffy has clamped down on his hero worship, and if he still cared he had stopped showing it to Ace.
But they had cared once. Everyone cared, at least for a minute.
Not Pops. And something unwinds from around Ace’s chest, lifts itself off his shoulders, and he can pull more air into his lungs than he ever could before. He hadn’t known breathing could be this easy. The Spade pirates notice the difference. Most of the crew does. Most attribute it to being a commander, say that leadership suits him. The other commanders look at him knowingly and Ace wonders what parts of their pasts Pops forgave and forgot.
He doesn't ask. Their pasts, their blood, it all matters so little out here. They don’t ask either, and it doesn’t feel like they’re hiding secrets from each other; it’s like not asking why the sky is blue or why the ocean is wet. The answers don’t matter, so neither do the questions.
Ace never knew he could love this many people this much. It doesn’t feel like he should be able to keep this much in his chest, and it somehow weighs a thousand pounds and nothing at all at the same time.
Then Thatch is dead in a pool of his own blood and everyone tells him to calm down and he doesn't understand because how could he be calm, how could they be calm? Teach has killed Thatch, has knocked out one of the walls of their home, and maybe Ace can't make him rebuild it, but he can make him pay. His grandfather is a marine. He taught Ace that people have to pay for their crimes. Their definitions of crime are different, they disagree on what sorts of punishments to dole out, but they see eye to eye on the necessity.
And so now Ace is here, at the end, and he is pulling air into his lungs and pushing blood back out, and he is in Luffy’s arms as though he is the big brother.
Its wrong. Luffy is the youngest, should have stayed that way, it's Ace’s job - and his alone - to be the oldest. He promised that, to the ghost of a boy who was shot down while fleeing for freedom.
He's breaking two promises for the price of one. He wonders if Sabo is watching, if he's angry, if he thinks it would have been better for Ace to die and him to live, because he wouldn't have failed Luffy like this.
He wonders if his mother can see him, if she thinks it was worth it to die or if she wishes she had given him to the marines.
He thinks of the children who died while they hunted for him, and wonders if enough of their spirits linger to curse him for living while their potential was snuffed out.
And now he's dying here, in the middle of a sea of corpses that died either to save him or to kill him.
Maybe it's for the best. He doesn't know if he could ever give another order while knowing their captain, their father, died to rescue him. He doesn't know if he could ever sleep again without seeing Oars Jr. collapse, without hearing his comrades scream because dying hurts, he knows that now, he knows what they felt as they fell.
What Sabo felt as he went to the water, all those years ago.
He had wanted to go home, but without Pops, without so many crewmates, with all that guilt, he doesn’t know if it would still have been home, and he thinks the only thing that might be worse than not having a home at all would be to walk into his home and find it had stopped welcoming him.
He would not have forgiven himself, so maybe it's better to die, though he hates himself for thinking it while Luffy begs him to live, begs for a doctor, reminds Ace that he promised.
He shouldn't have promised. What, had he thought himself immortal, capable of declining when Death came to call?
The answer, he knows, is yes. He had been strong, stronger than anything the forest could throw at him, stronger than the pirates in the bay or the criminals in the garbage or the nobles in the town. He had defeated everything he met, again and again, only losing to Sabo, and then only sometimes.
He had thought himself invincible. Luffy had believed it. Ace had allowed him to believe it.
And now he is dying and Luffy is learning Ace isn’t invincible, nothing is, and he is going to be alone, alone, being lonely is more painful than being hurt, and where is Luffy’s crew, why aren’t they with him, how could they have left their captain at a time like this, when he was going to need them more than he ever had before, more than he’s ever needed anyone.
He hopes they’re just waiting somewhere. He hopes Luffy has not lost them, not as he is about to lose his brother too.
He’s leaving Luffy alone. He doesn’t want to, but the only way around it is if he learns how to breathe blood in place of oxygen.
He can hear Vista and Marco shouting somewhere. He thinks he heard Pops roar, but maybe it was an echo, a memory. Everything is blurry and far away, like a fever dream, except for Luffy, who is warm underneath him and Ace can tell he’s bleeding all across Luffy’s clothes.
Luffy’s wearing yellow. He used to wear yellow a lot, but he favors red these days. It’s a shame he’s switched back, Ace thinks distantly. The red wouldn’t show the blood so much.
He wants to tell Luffy it’s not so bad as he thinks. Wants to tell him about how much pain he’s been in his entire life, and how Luffy and Sabo and the Whitebeard pirates took it away, but words don’t cover it, don’t explain it, and he can’t reach into Luffy’s chest and make him feel it, make him feel the way it had seeped into Ace’s bones and made them heavy, made them ache until he wanted to break them to make it stop.
There are not enough words in the world to explain that. He settles for thank you, hoping Luffy will understand, knowing he won’t. Ace doesn’t understand, he just knows that it’s true, knows that it’s right.
As long as Luffy doesn’t think he’s lying. That’s the important thing. Luffy will find a way to forgive himself, to recover from this - he bounces back, he always bounces back - as long as he doesn’t think Ace’s last words are a lie.
Thank you. Thank you for loving me, for keeping me alive because I didn’t know how to do it for myself. Tell my friends, the other part of my family, thank you for the home. Thank you for giving me a place where I could breathe, could sleep, could think about something other than the question of if I deserved to do either of those things.
That was what home was, the one he had spent nearly two decades searching for, and it’s terrible that he can’t keep it, but he had found it, and that would have to be enough. Home was Pops, was Marco, was Vista, Jozu, Izo, the Moby Dick, the Jolly Roger flag that snapped in the wind above their heads.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
A long time ago, a lifetime ago, when he was a child, not yet angry and bitter, all sharp edges and teeth, he had asked someone in Goa kingdom where people went when they died. She had said Heaven, and then he had asked her what Heaven was.
Home, she had said. It’s going home and staying there, forever and ever and ever.
So at least he knows where he’s going this time.
