s02e11 - Business As Usual

This episode, a marathon results in the first of several grisly deaths, which lead Audrey and Nathan to a meeting of Troubled people.

Duke investigates the silver 'Crocker' box which Vince sends Dwight to steal from him, but Duke talks Dwight into working with him - at least temporarily - and they discuss fathers while they search various boats for the larger silver box. When they eventually find the box, full of weapons and Simon Crocker's journal, Dwight's attempt to run off with it is interrupted by Duke's knife and the surge of strength that Dwight's blood gives him.

Audrey goes to talk to Lucy, a conversation which provides as many questions as answers. She then looks through the box and journal with Duke, revealing more questions when they read that Simon expected Duke to kill Audrey.

Meanwhile, having initially been unsure it's a good idea, Nathan decides to attend the meeting of Troubled people at the Herald.

S01e09 - As You Were

Rewatch of the week!

I actually really feel for Audrey at the beginning; if someone dragged me out of bed first thing in the morning to take me to some mysterious island and frighten the life out of me with party poppers, I would not be impressed, at all. As in, I would be very angry. But I guess that’s just one of so very many ways I am nothing like Audrey lol

This is such a good Garland episode, with the backstory about having been in Vietnam and having to shoot his partner, and then the, “if you want to throw down there, yoga mat, you just feel free: I've coughed up tougher than you.” XD love it!

And, then! The stuff Garland says to Audrey about how Nathan’s going to have to be “tough as nails” to deal with what the Troubles throw him and how “friendship’s a burden; I don’t want to be a burden,” and the, “I'm leaving him a whole world of troubles he's gonna have to fix.” - I can’t help but see all of that in the light of the 1980s episode in season five; because that fits perfectly, even as it puts a whole different light on things and I can’t believe the writers had any idea at this point that that 1980s episode would happen.

But now just as I’m writing this it occurs to me for the first time that Garland’s “friendship is a burden” thing was probably intended to relate to his story about having to shoot his partner. Either way I like it as an insight into why him and Nathan don’t get along and why he might have chosen a parenting style that was always going to leave the two of them arguing and at odds.

It’s interesting to me how Julia manages to be a likeable character despite spending most of her first episode being annoyed and arguing with everyone.

Nathan’s story about the sweater actually being a scarf makes sense for the plot, but his, “I told Jess to pick up the sweater …” kinda grates because, they weren’t that much of an established couple yet, they’d only just started dating, surely? So what’s he doing telling her to get presents for his friends? Do you own damn shopping Nathan, jeez.

Nathan really puts a lot of faith in his inability to feel Audrey here. Or rather, in the idea that he should be able to feel her, seeing as the only proof he has of that at this point is one kiss on the cheek.

Also … why did Lucy give an eight year old boy a beautiful silver necklace? That we never hear about again?
