Elegido en 253, fue obligado al exilio. Al volver a Roma, se opone al rigor de los novacianos que rechazan la readmisión en la Iglesia de los cristianos que habían adorado ídolos para evitar la persecución. Lucio establece su reintegración a la comunidad después de las prácticas penitenciales.

Elogio: En Roma, en la vía Apia, en el cementerio de Calixto, sepultura de san Lucio, papa, sucesor de Cornelio, que sufrió el exilio por la fe de Cristo y, en tiempos angustiosos, fue eximio confesor de la fe, actuando con moderación y prudencia.

Al principio del pontificado de Lucio, el emperador Galo continuó la persecución iniciada por Decio. El Papa fue desterrado a un sitio del que los anales no conservan memoria, pero el destierro duró poco tiempo ya que Galo murió ese mismo año, y le sucedió Valeriano, más favorable a los cristianos. A su vuelta, Lucio fue aclamado por el pueblo, que salió a recibirle triunfalmente. Con esa ocasión san Cipriano le escribió una carta de felicitación, diciéndole que no por haber sido preservado por Dios de la muerte, como los jóvenes lo fueron de las llamas del horno, ha perdido la palma del martirio. San Cipriano añade: «No cesamos de ofrecer sacrificios y oraciones a Dios Padre y a su Hijo Jesucristo para darle gracias y suplicarle que, puesto que da la perfección en todo, perfeccione también en ti la gloriosa corona de tu confesión. Tal vez al destierro no fue sino para mostrarte que tu gloria debe brillar a los ojos de todos, pues es conveniente que la víctima, que debe a sus hermanos ejemplo de virtud y fe, sea sacrificada delante del pueblo». En otra carta que escribió al Papa Esteban, san Cipriano dice que san Lucio condenó a los herejes novacianos que rehusaban la absolución y la comunión a los pecadores arrepentidos.

Según Eusebio, san Lucio sólo ocupó la cátedra pontifical ocho meses. Durante muchos siglos se lo tuvo como «martirizado en la persecución de Valeriano», pero es positivamente cierto que murió antes de que empezara dicha persecución y es muy poco probable que haya muerto martirizado. El cronista del año 354 no nombra a san Lucio en la «depositio martyrum», sino en la «depositio episcoporum», en tanto que los restos de la inscripción, descubierta por De Rossi en las catacumbas, no mencionan su martirio.

Se dice que en Bolonia se conservan algunas reliquias de san Lucio. En la catedral de Roeskilde, cerca de Copenhague, se veneró durante largo tiempo la cabeza de este Papa, que era el patrono de la ciudad. Pero muy probablemente, tanto las reliquias de Dinamarca como las de Bolonia, pertenecen a otros dos santos del mismo nombre. San Lucio fue sepultado en la catacumba de San Calixto; pero sus restos fueron trasladados más tarde a la iglesia de Santa Cecilia, por orden de Clemente VIII, y ahí se conservan todavía.

'The Netflix limited series Ripley features a cat named King, whose presence in the show means more than viewers might think.

Set in the 1960s, Ripley — director Steve Zaillian’s black and white adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s classic 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley — stars Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley, a New York City grifter who has fallen on hard times.

Ripley’s fortunes change, however, when through a stroke of dumb luck he is hired by a wealthy shipping businessman, Herbert Greenleaf (Kenneth Lonergan), to travel to Italy to convince his wandering son, Dickie (Johnny Flynn), to return home.

Becoming obsessed with the younger Greenleaf’s lavish European lifestyle, Ripley develops a nefarious plan to steal Dickie’s identity. Dakota Fanning also stars in Ripley as Marge Sherwood, a fellow American suspicious of Ripley’s actions.

King — a Maine Coon cat — plays Lucio in Ripley. The large feline is featured in the miniseries’ ominous prologue scene as he watches Ripley dragging a body down a set of stairs. The cat then returns in Episode 5.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Zaillian stressed why the majestic cat was an essential part of Ripley.

“I had written the cat into the scripts, and I did it with some trepidation,” Zaillian told THR. “I had this idea that the only witnesses to Tom’s crimes would be animals that couldn’t testify and people who might be uncomfortable testifying. The cat, of course, was the tricky one.”

Zaillian Says Finding The Right Cat To Play Lucio Wasn’t Easy

Discussing his use of King in Ripley with THR, Steven Zaillian said that the cat needed to be recast twice before the distinct feline landed the role.

“Owners would bring cats into the office and think you would want them to do tricks,” Zaillian recalled for the trade publication. “But what we wanted was a cat that could just be really chill, and comfortable with people and cameras.”

All eight episodes of Ripley are streaming on Netflix. The series debuted at No. 7 on the streamer’s Top 10 Global TV Shows for the week of April 1-7, attracting 2.3 million views, which equates to 16.9 million viewing hours.

The Talented Mr. Ripley was previously adapted as a 1999 film of the same name starring Matt Damon as Tom Ripley, Jude Law as Dickie Greenleaf and Gwyneth Paltrow as Marge Sherwood.

The 1999 film — which also features Cate Blanchett and the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman in supporting roles — earned five Oscar nominations including a Best Adapted Screenplay nod for the film’s late writer-director Anthony Minghella and a Best Supporting Actor nod for Law.'

Had a good time at the annual local horror marathon. They've retooled it to have one theme for the night, which TBH is not my preference, I like seeing the breadth of horror in the grab-bag approach. Interesting selection though:

Army of Darkness: great, hadn't seen it since college. I forgot how much of a Looney Tunes cartoon it is at points, Bruce Campbell deserved a bigger career in comedy. One of those weird movies that are rated R, but the ideal age is to see it first is like 10 years old, and it's very much for the part of the brain that stays 10. A good one to start out on - fast paced fun cult classic, definitely an audience that was very familiar with it.

Friday the Thirteenth VII: The New Blood: meh, I'm just not really a Friday the Thirteenth person, I find them repetitive and Jason Voorhees isn't a particularly interesting villain. This one had the extremely strange effort to mix things up by ramming the Friday the Thirteenth stuff into a Carrie ripoff, I don't know this franchise well enough to know how regularly shit like that happens. Jason's unkillability kinda cycles between being funny and aggravating after awhile.

Reanimator: a classic, very cool getting to see it in the theater. And every time I've seen it since watching the Hammer Frankenstein series, I think about how that's at least as much of an influence on it as the Lovecraft story - a lot of Cushing Frankenstein in this Herbert West. Jeffrey Combs is so good in this part.

Night of the Living Dead (1990): I hadn't seen this version before, it's an interesting one. The badass-ification of Barbara was a surprising turn based on the original movie, but less so based on the casting (slightly distracting casting for a Babylon 5 fan though). I don't know how I feel about the change to Ben's ending relative to that - always good to see Tony Todd though.

The Gates of Hell: it was fine. I can't really articulate why but Lucio Fulci's movies never really click with me, in a way where I can see why they're a thing, they're just not my thing. Very visceral gore though.

Così cantava il grande Lucio Dalla in Balla balla ballerino, ma il concetto di tempo è naturalmente un tema infinito in filosofia, letteratura, cinema. Sorvoleremo quindi sul capolavoro in assoluto, che sembra aver esaurito ogni possibile riflessione al riguardo, ovvero La recherche di Proust, per segnalare alcune letture e qualche film.

Delle perle di saggezza contenute nelle  Lettere a Lucilio  di Seneca, ne ricordiamo solo una: il tempo è l’unica cosa che, una volta che ti sia stata sottratta, nessuno ti potrà mai restituire. Ovvero, questo giorno è l’unico che hai a disposizione e non tornerà mai più, ottima ragione per non sprecarlo. E come impiegarlo al meglio se non leggendo, perché, come diceva Umberto Eco, “Chi non legge, a 70 anni avrà vissuto una sola vita: la propria. Chi legge avrà vissuto 5000 anni: c’era quando Caino uccise Abele, quando Renzo sposò Lucia, quando Leopardi ammirava l’infinito… perché la lettura è una immortalità all’indietro”.

A proposito di Ti con zero di Calvino citiamo direttamente le parole dell’autore: “In Ti con zero cerco di vedere il tempo con la concretezza con cui si vede lo spazio. Nel racconto, ogni secondo, ogni frazione di tempo è un universo. Ho abolito tutto il prima e tutto il dopo fissandomi così sull’istante nel tentativo di scoprirne l’infinita ricchezza. Vivere il tempo come tempo, il secondo per quello che è, rappresenta un tentativo di sfuggire alla drammaticità del divenire. Quello che riusciamo a vivere nel secondo è sempre qualcosa di particolarmente intenso, che prescinde dall’aspettativa del futuro e dal ricordo del passato, finalmente liberato dalla continua presenza della memoria. Ti con zero contiene l’affermazione del valore assoluto di un singolo segmento del vissuto staccato da tutto il resto”.

Un americano alla corte di Re Artù (1889) di Mark Twain è uno dei primi romanzi sul tema del viaggio temporale. Il protagonista è un uomo del Connecticut, Hank Morgan, che per qualche misterioso motivo si ritrova trasportato indietro nel tempo fino all’Inghilterra medievale, negli anni di re Artù. Da semplice cittadino americano, grazie alle sue nozioni di tecnologia del XIX secolo, Morgan diventa un mago agli occhi di chi vive nel passato. Si tratta di un romanzo ancora molto noto nelle bibliografie per ragazzi e numerose sono state negli anni le trasposizioni teatrali, a cartoni animati, a fumetti e su pellicola.

Naturalmente, con un tema come questo, la fantascienza si può sbizzarrire, perciò ci limiteremo a segnalare alcune opere. La macchina del tempo di Herbert George Wells (1895) racconta la storia di uno scienziato che ha costruito un marchingegno in grado di far cambiare epoca a chi lo manovra. Il protagonista vive nell’anno 802.701, in un’epoca in cui l’umanità è divisa in due classi sociali: in superficie i gentili e pacifici Eloi, mentre sottoterra si trovano i ripugnanti Morlock, esseri fotofobici che si nutrono della carne degli Eloi.

La fine dell’eternità (1955) di Isaac Asimov: in un remoto futuro l’umanità viaggia nel tempo con molta disinvoltura, organizzando addirittura scambi commerciali tra ere differenti. Il sistema consente anche un controllo sociale e politico: è sufficiente cancellare dal passato tutti gli elementi che potrebbero essere di disturbo. Chi si occupa di queste selezioni è la casta degli Eterni,di cui fa parte il protagonista, Andrew Harlan, che si troverà a dover affrontare una scelta terribile.

Dottor Futuro di Philip Kindred Dick (1960) racconta la storia del dottor Parsons il quale, a causa di un incidente, si ritrova in un futuro molto lontano, caratterizzato da una civiltà avanzatissima dedita al culto della morte, che reputa illegale impegnarsi a salvare vite umane. Ma alcuni, come accade anche in 1989 di Orwell e in Fahrenheit 451 di Bradbury, non sono allineati al comune pensiero, e decidono di sfruttare le competenze mediche di Parsons per provare a salvare il futuro del loro mondo.

Ma l’archetipo di questo genere è sicuramente Il curioso caso di Benjamin Botton tratto da I racconti dell’età del jazz di Francis Scott Fitzgerald  (La vita non si misura in minuti, ma in attimi), da cui è stato tratto un film di successo con Brad Pitt e Cate Blanchett.

Solo un cenno ad altri titoli sull’argomento: di Bruno Arpaia  Tempo perso (2002), Il futuro in punta di piedi (1994) e Il passato davanti a noi  (2006); di Audrey Niffenegger La moglie dell’uomo che viaggiava nel tempo (2003); di Guillaume Musso  L’uomo che credeva di non avere più tempo  (2005); di Luis Sepúlveda  Storia di una lumaca che scoprì l’importanza della lentezza (2013); di Antonio Tabucchi  Si sta facendo sempre più tardi  (2005) e Il tempo invecchia in fretta  (2011); un classico riproposto di Jerome K. Jerome  Sul tempo perso a perdere tempo (2016). Come titoli più recenti: dell’inossidabile duo Guccini-Macchiavelli  Tempo da elfi (2017) e di Matt Haig  Come fermare il tempo (2018).

Per quanto riguarda la decima Musa, vi consigliamo un noir di classe del 1947, A sangue freddo, diretto da Robert Rossen, con Dick Powell e Lee J.Cobb, inaspettatamente nel ruolo di buono e fantastico nella scena iniziale, ancora prima dei titoli, sotto il grande orologio in una inquadratura degna di Hitchcock: da vedere!

Senza via di scampo è un film del 1987, con Kevin Kostner e Gene Huckman, remake di Il tempo si è fermato del 1948 (con Ray Milland e Charles Laughton): entrambe le pellicole sono godibilissime e il divario cronologico di quasi 40 anni non fa che accentuare il ruolo decisivo del fattore tempo.

SAN GERMÁNICO, MÁRTIR DE FILADELFIA

Germánico fue un discípulo muy joven de San Policarpo y también uno de los once cristianos de Filadelfia, en la actual Turquía, que fueron devorados por las bestias durante las persecuciones del Imperio Romano en el siglo II. En vez de renegar su fe, instó a sus compañeros a dar su vida por Jesús.

Elogio: En Esmirna, de Asia, pasión de san Germánico, mártir de Filadelfia en tiempo de los emperadores Marco Antonino y Lucio Aurelio. Discípulo de san Policarpo, le precedió en el martirio, y al ser condenado por el juez en el vigor de la primera juventud, superó con la gracia de Dios el temor de la fragilidad corporal y llegó a provocar éI mismo a la fiera que le destinaron para su sacrificio.

Todo lo que sabemos de san Germánico se reduce a lo que nos dice la carta a los cristianos de Esmirna sobre la persecución en la que fue hecho prisionero san Policarpo: «Pero demos gracias a Dios, porque Germánico triunfó de sus enemigos. En efecto, el muy noble joven alentó el valor de los otros con su constancia, e hizo frente a las fieras, en forma admirable. Como el procónsul tratase de salvarle, rogándole que se apiadara de su propia juventud, Germánico, expresó su deseo de verse libre de la compañía de hombres tan descarriados, y él mismo provocó valientemente a las fieras para que le atacaran. Al ver la multitud el maravilloso valor de los cristianos, amados del Señor y temerosos de Dios, empezó a gritar: ¡Mueran los enemigos de los dioses! ¡Traed a Policarpo!»

Este relato es uno de los documentos más auténticos que poseemos sobre la Iglesia primitiva. Eusebio cita este pasaje en su «Historia Eclesiástica», y el texto completo nos ha llegado por una fuente independiente. Hay que notar que Germánico, al provocar contra sí a las fieras para librarse cuanto antes de la abyecta compañía de los paganos y judíos, hizo realmente el gesto que san Ignacio de Antioquía se proponía hacer (Carta a los Romanos, 5).

Nota de ETF: La cuestión del año de martirio es problemática: por un lado, el martirio de Germánico está estrechamente relacionado con el de Policarpo; sin embargo, el de Policarpo cuenta con testimonios dispares, que hace que haya que situarlo en el 166/7, o en el 155, o incluso en otros años. Si nos guiamos por el elogio del Martirologio Romano, el «tiempo de los emperadores Marco Antonino y Lucio Aurelio» es después del 160, siempre que el «Marco Antonino» que menciona sea Marco Aurelio, porque podría tratarse de Antonino Pío, y entonces el martirio se situaría hacia el 155. La cuestión queda abierta, y la confusión entre los dos emperadores, así como otras dificultades en la concordancia cronológica, son bastante frecuentes en la literatura posterior como para no poder cerrar definitivamente el asunto.
