Paglalakbay ng Pananampalataya: Paghakbang Tungo sa Pagpapatawad at Pagpapala sa Kamay ni Hesus
Tumblr media
Tumblr media

UNWIND IN QUEZON PROVINCE
Are you ready to unwind and recharge? Look no further than Quezon Province, a treasure trove of natural beauty, rich history, and delectable cuisine.
Tumblr media
Minor Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel
Every time I visit in Quezon Province, my first stop was the revered Minor Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel, a stunning key-shaped historical church that showcases the province's deep-rooted faith and heritage. The intricate architecture, fascinating structure, and serene atmosphere of the basilica left me in awe.
Tumblr media
Casa de Comunidad de Tayabas
Next is the historic Casa de Comunidad de Tayabas. As I stepped foot in here, it felt like I was transported back in time. This centuries-old house, which once served as the town hall and prison during the Spanish Colonial Era, now stands as a testament to the rich history of Tayabas, Quezon. Every nook and cranny of the house whispers stories from the past. As I wandered around, I was struck by its antique furnishings and relics, and couldn’t help but think of the courageous individuals who once walked through these halls.
Tumblr media
Kamay ni Hesus
Then, my next stop would be the breathtaking Kamay ni Hesus, also known as Grotto, nestled in the heart of Lucban. This place is where devotees go and pray, believing that healing prayers come true after they visit and pray here. This natural wonder is indeed a sight to behold with its serene and peaceful ambiance. You can also buy souvenirs at the stalls nearby for remembrance.
Tumblr media
Pancit hab-hab
After working up an appetite, I often visit the iconic food stalls in Lucban to try their native cuisine. The most famous delicacy in here is the savory pancit hab-hab, expertly cooked noodles served on a banana leaf, which delivered an unforgettable burst of flavors and textures paired with lime or vinegar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Longganisang Lucban and Budin
I also indulged in the famous longganisang Lucban, a meaty garlic sausage that perfectly captures the essence of Quezon Province’s culinary heritage. It is best served with fried rice and egg and paired with a side of budin—a moist and flavorful cassava cake. This meal was a true delight, nothing short of exceptional.
Tips to plan your visit:
To plan your trip, you can ride a bus or any means of transportation to Quezon Province. For accomodation, you may choose from a range of hotels, resorts, and homestays. Most importantly, bring a considerable amount of money to try the local cuisine and buy souvenirs.
Quezon Province is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to unwind and recharge. With its fascinating beauty, historical landmarks, and delectable cuisine, this province has left an indelible mark on my heart. So pack your bags, bring your cameras, capture every moment, and get ready to experience the charm of Quezon Province!
Have fun and enjoy!

Festivals in Cebu and the Delicious Foods That Accompany Them
Cebu, an island province in the Philippines, is known for its vibrant culture, rich history, and colorful festivals. These festivals, often celebrated with grand parades, street dancing, and musical performances, are an expression of the island’s diverse heritage. What's even more exciting is the food that is commonly served during these celebrations. Filipino festivals are always a feast for the eyes and the stomach. Here’s a look at some of the most popular festivals in Cebu and the traditional foods associated with them.
1. Sinulog Festival
The Sinulog Festival is the most famous festival in Cebu, held every third Sunday of January. It honors the Santo Niño (the Holy Child), a symbol of Christianity in the Philippines. The festival is known for its grand street parade, where participants wear bright, colorful costumes and dance to the rhythm of the "Sinulog" beat. The festival also includes religious processions, parties, and concerts, making it one of the largest and most exciting cultural celebrations in the country.
Tumblr media
Festival Foods:
Lechon: A whole roasted pig is the centerpiece of almost every Cebuano celebration, especially during Sinulog. The pig is seasoned with a special marinade and cooked over a charcoal pit, resulting in crispy skin and tender meat.
Puso: This is rice wrapped in woven coconut leaves, often served alongside lechon. Puso is a local delicacy that complements the savory flavor of the roast pig.
Torta: This is a sweet, soft pastry made from flour, sugar, and eggs. It’s a favorite treat for both locals and tourists during Sinulog.
2. Kadaugan sa Mactan
Kadaugan sa Mactan, which means "Victory in Mactan," commemorates the historic Battle of Mactan, where the local hero, Lapu-Lapu, defeated the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. Held in April, the festival includes reenactments of the historic battle, street dancing, and a series of cultural activities that showcase the bravery and heroism of Cebuano ancestors.
Tumblr media
Festival Foods:
Puto Maya: This sticky rice delicacy is traditionally served with sugar and ripe mangoes, making it a popular snack during the Kadaugan sa Mactan. It's perfect for balancing the savory dishes that dominate the festival.
Suman: Another rice-based delicacy, suman is sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves and steamed to perfection. It is often paired with sugar or coconut for added sweetness.
3. Pahiyas Festival
Though originally celebrated in the town of Lucban, Quezon, the Pahiyas Festival is also observed in some parts of Cebu, particularly in rural towns. Held every May 15, this festival is a thanksgiving event for the harvest, and participants decorate their homes with colorful displays made of local produce, such as fruits, vegetables, and rice. The festival is a vibrant display of community spirit and agricultural abundance.
Tumblr media
Festival Foods:
Biko: A sweet sticky rice dish made with brown sugar, coconut milk, and glutinous rice. It is commonly served as a dessert during the Pahiyas Festival and is a crowd favorite.
Hamonado: A sweet, tender pork dish that is often prepared during festive occasions, including the Pahiyas Festival. The pork is braised with a mixture of pineapple, soy sauce, and brown sugar, creating a deliciously sweet and savory dish.
4. Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival
The Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival, held every June, is a celebration of the rich cultural heritage of the province of Cebu. The festival commemorates the tattooed warriors (Pintados) who were known for their bravery. The festival includes a colorful parade, street dancing, and cultural performances that highlight Cebu's indigenous traditions.
Tumblr media
Festival Foods:
Banana Cue: Fried caramelized bananas are a popular street food during the Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival. The bananas are coated in sugar and deep-fried, giving them a crunchy exterior and soft interior.
Balut: A local delicacy that involves boiled duck eggs with a fertilized embryo inside, served with a pinch of salt, vinegar, and sometimes chili. It’s a common street snack during the festival.
5. Tostado Festival
Celebrated in the town of Talisay, the Tostado Festival is held every July. The festival honors the traditional way of cooking bread in the region, particularly the "tostado" or toasted bread, which has been a staple snack for many years. The festival features a series of activities such as cultural dances, street parades, and the famous "Tostado Challenge," where participants try to make the best toasted bread.
Tumblr media
Festival Foods:
Tostado: The star of this festival is, of course, the toasted bread. Locals serve it with sweet spreads or fillings like cheese, butter, or even savory meats.
Kalamay: A sticky, sweet dessert made from glutinous rice, coconut milk, and sugar. It’s often served in small portions, wrapped in banana leaves, making it a popular treat during the Tostado Festival.
6. Balik Cebu Festival
The Balik Cebu Festival is a celebration of Cebu’s rich cultural history and its vibrant people. It is held in December and is aimed at welcoming balikbayans (Filipinos returning to the country after years abroad) back to Cebu. The festival features a range of cultural shows, street parades, and historical exhibits that celebrate Cebu's past and present.
Tumblr media
Festival Foods:
Danggit: A dried and salted fish that is often served as a snack or breakfast dish. It pairs perfectly with vinegar and is often seen in local markets and food stalls during the Balik Cebu Festival.
Bale: A type of Cebuano pastry that’s soft, chewy, and sweet. It is often served alongside coffee and is a hit among tourists and locals alike.
Cebu is a hub of festivity, culture, and, of course, food. Each festival reflects the island’s deep-rooted traditions, and the food served during these events adds to the overall experience. Whether you're attending the Sinulog Festival’s grand parade, participating in the reenactment of the Battle of Mactan, or simply enjoying a local food market, Cebu’s festivals are always a great opportunity to sample some of the island’s best dishes. So, next time you find yourself in Cebu during a festival, make sure to try out these delicious local foods that celebrate both the heritage and the heart of Cebu!

hanash lately: shoulders, syllabi, slowing down, and other shenanigans from the last two months!
luntian had raved a few times about her boss's memory: "she remembers everything. you know why? she journals every day."
i told her: we should do the same.
but here i am failing miserably at keeping this blog updated. i had intended to write about our trip to baguio during the tail end of may, my 33rd birthday in lucban, our anniversary spent watching plays and a stand-up act, and my mundane teacher's leave. however, as i type this, another semester has opened and details for the past two and a half months are almost slipping away!
when we got back from japan, i had to prepare for a conference in baguio where my colleagues (who are also close friends) would present our current research. luntian took a leave and tagged along. we dined at oh my gulay! and she took me to bencab museum: it was my first time. i was happy to see works by santi bose and antipas delotavo in the flesh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in june, i celebrated my birthday by having dinner at a taiwanese restaurant in quezon city with luntian and my closest friends, rogelio and faith. the celebration continued when we spent a full weekend in lucban. one of my best friends, june (not to be confused with jeane), had an airbnb there and her entire family was happy enough to host us. my mother and luntian's family went as well. we were well-fed for almost three whole days. we visited my dad's grave. i introduced luntian for the first time. she and i ran on saturday morning and discovered that lucban's uneven streets were not kind to our feet. on sunday, my mother, luntian, and her mom went to mass before heading back home. my jesus year could not have started any better.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the highlight of july was our first anniversary, which we spent at ace water spa for free (for free!). luntian was heading a paralegal training for work and had free accommodations (buffets included!) at the water spa's hotel. for that saturday we watched sir vlad's back-to-back theater plays (prinsipe bahaghari left us in tears and puting gunaw left us haunted) as well as atsuko okatsuka's full grown tour in manila. on sunday, we woke up early for an almost nine-kilometer run around up diliman campus punctuated by a well-deserved breakfast buffet at the university hotel. what a weekend!
and soon enough my most awaited teacher's leave began. i went home to cavite to spend time with my dogs and my mother. i started watching sex and the city. i tried finishing an ongoing research i'm writing on queer coming-of-age films, but it's still in my drafts folder. i ate my mom's baked goods. and in a blink, it's august again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
august had a disorienting start. though i was able to tick off most of the errands on my to-do list during our leave, i suffered two shoulder dislocations in the first two weeks of the month. luckily, i managed to pop them back in less than an hour for both incidents, but healing and rehabbing them will take a considerable amount of time. i guess that means no pickleball for a while.
i've had this injury since i was nine: i got hit by a speeding tricycle (probably a faulty assessment of a highway at my age as well) and broke my right clavicle. even though it healed as young bones have a pretty good recovery rate, it dealt a permanent blow on my right shoulder. it would dislocate for a few seconds if i twisted my arm on a weird angle or when i kicked too hard in high school soccer. i'd be immobilized for no more than five minutes, but it would pop back like nothing happened. i didn't understand what a shoulder dislocation meant then and just called it "spasms."
throughout my adulthood, i would endure three severe shoulder dislocations (i'd call it severe because i can't put it back on my own) where i'd end up at the hospital. the most recent incident was just last year. the doctor told me that my best resort is surgery (which i can't afford right now!). the consecutive dislocations just this month were frightening because it happened in my sleep.
while rushing to curate readings to update my syllabi in time for the school opening, i'd alternate tabs on researching about my condition. once you've had a shoulder dislocation, relapse is about 90% certain. it's called shoulder instability. some heal properly through physical therapy (i've done this after my second hospitalization), but the best hope is surgery. coach aivi, who happens to have the same condition as mine, but had the surgery told me that building muscles on your shoulders is also a big help. while this is comforting as i do enjoy physical activity, it would have to wait until my shoulder is stable enough to at least lift a decently weighted dumbbell. i hope i'm patient enough to wait for that.
the first week of school opening is also the first week of getting used to wearing my shoulder braces daily (i use different ones for daily wear, sleeping, and sports) and applying cold packs every night and morning. all these additions to my daily routine are unexpected and quite frankly irritating as they slow me down (especially in the morning!), but perhaps it IS a necessary reminder to indeed slow down.
slow down and wait for my shoulder to heal. slow down while i save up for surgery. slow down and take time to write more every day (to remember more about every day!). slow down to bounce back better and stronger. slow down, slow down, slow down. if i'm patient enough to rehaul my syllabi (i cannot wait for my students to read john cheever and doris lessing though!) then maybe i could be patient enough to wait for and work on my recovery.
slow down, slow down, slow down.

COMPAWSSION LUCBAN 📍 Lucena City, Quezon Province, Philippines
We’ve long dreamed of meeting them. We waited for the right time for years, and finally, it happened. We have now personally met the people behind Compawssion Lucban, an animal welfare advocate group based in Lucban, Quezon 🤎
This advocacy started from a pure love for community Aspin (Asong Pinoy) and Puspin (Pusang Pinoy), and from the desire to save strays that were close to being put down without hope 💔
They currently have 28 dogs and 15 cats rescued and living with them in their home, where they are safe from harm and living peacefully 🐱🐶
So once again, we are truly delighted to have met Ma’am Princess and Ma’am Jemimah of Compawssion Lucban—until we meet again 💛
We would also like to thank Ma’am Karen, who made this meeting possible 🥰
For those who wish to extend help to their rescues, you may message them through their official Facebook account: Compawssion-Lucban 🫶
