Okay, so hear me out- There is this AMAZING Hobbit fanfic that started in 2014, called Love Pays No Indemnity by Jana. Go check it out. I'll wait.
Now, I know Bilbo/The One Ring, Bilbo/Sauron may LOOK crazy, but I promise you it is genuinely one of the best things I have ever read IN MY LIFE. No, I know, Listen To Me. Every time I start reading this fic it consumes my life until I finish, and in fall of 2016 (which is the year I started reading) I actually started painting a comic of it.
Buuuut.... thanks to job hunting, working, exhaustion, depression, and a global pandemic, and then MORE WORK and EVEN MORE exhaustion I.... stopped painting. Not just this- for like two whole years I stopped painting, drawing, sketching entirely.
I was so tired, I had no space or energy to make any art, nevermind painting something this intense. I mean- I've never made a comic before! I've never tried to re-write a novel-style work into comic format! I don't know near enough about kerning or typesetting or whatever! If you squint at the image above you can see that I didn't even plan where to put the word bubbles! I just painted pretty pictures!~
Obviously, I had no clue what I was doing back then, and honestly I still don't have a clue now. But, I lost my job and searching for another one is both tiring and somehow even more soul-sucking than having a job is. Which means, I need to do something just to stay sane.
I was planning to revitalize my old artblog and post things there again, and I still will, but when I pulled these pages out of their dusty drawer and spread them out on my floor, I felt the urge of joyful creation. I loved painting this, I loved reading LPNI (for the fiftieth time), and I want to keep feeling that for as long as possible, so I decided that YES. I'm DOING IT!!
I am going to paint the rest of this comic chapter!
There's a lot to do to get there, but already, I'm planning more pages, getting more painted, figuring out how to do the word-bubble-thingies- it's going to happen!
Posting will begin on Friday- one page at a time! (look, I'm sorry, but these are 12"x18" paintings. I NEED TIME) If I get enough done, I might post more often, we'll see.
Wish me luck and if you choose to follow this crazy endeavor, give the fic a read and send Jana all your love!

Propaganda
Barbara Stanwyck (Ball of Fire, The Lady Eve, Double Indemnity)—I hope someone else has submitted better propaganda than I because I don't want my girl's prospects to rest on me just yelling PLEASE VOTE FOR MY TERRIBLE HOT GIRLFRIEND. She is a delight in everything! She is often a sexy jerk! (It's most of the plot of Baby Face!) Even when she plays a "good girl" (as an example, Christmas in Connecticut, which more people should see) she's still kind of a jerk and I love her for it! She won't take men's shit and she sure wouldn't take mine!
Mae Clarke (The Public Enemy, Frankenstein)—she was in frankenstein. which i think is neat

get to know you <3
Thank you for the tags: @nv-md & @mallstars — ali, i am also very behind my tags so combining both of these (and also appreciate your mega get-to-know-you post lmao!)
three ships: obviously harry/draco. i'm also getting deep into maxiel in f1 rpf — i've got a scrivener doc open for them, which i honestly never thought i would do — and then i somehow imprinted on steve/tony from marvel (like not mcu), probably because @sineala is such a talented writer who just knows how to get me in the gut, every time.
first ship: honestly, probably harry/draco, when the original hp books were coming out! i still remember reading 'irresistible poison' in a binder i had printed out at the library.
last song: omg, so i've been going through a screamo moment recently (honestly because of the 'this is daniel ricciardo' playlist) and have been listening to underoath's album 'they're only chasing safety' on REPEAT. 'the impact of reason' is maxiel-coded and no one can convince me otherwise.
last movie: double indemnity! loved it.
currently reading: gravity's rainbow & how to build a car by adrian newey. loving them both sm. AND all the incredible Erised wips. been stuffing my face with them and cannot wait for the complete versions + for the fest to post.
last thing i wrote: from aforementioned maxiel scrivener doc, rawdog notes style: "Daniel fires Michael. Or Michael quits. Daniel isn't quite sure and finds he doesn't quite care. Michael left, faux-sympathetic --> "we could've been something". He's with Yuki now. Yuki who still has the baby fat in his cheeks, who looks like he's never been hungry in his life. --> bitter Yuki didn't get the same treatment from M as him"
currently writing: maxiel tumblr fics 😈
Are you named after anyone: my great-grandmother 💕
Favorite subject in school: ohhhhh i mean i loved school, generally. probably lit?
Do you have kids: nah, but we've got the sweetest, stupidest cat of all time instead.
When was the last time you cried: actually wild, because i'm a big cryer & feel like i cry all the time, but i CANNOT remember.
Do you use sarcasm a lot: never ✨
What sports do you play/have played: i would def consider myself a jock — currently fixation: rock climbing
What's the first thing you notice about people: how nice they are :)
Any special talents: i feel i am quite good at geography/finding my way around a city, just naturally? i spent formative years way too cheap to pay for a smartphone and having to find my way about.
Where were you born: *******, **
What are your hobbies: besides everything obvious in this post, bookbinding, gardening, flowers, &c
How tall are you: 5'7" (and obsessed with ali our petite queen!!!!!)
Dream job: i am living it & feel very lucky. eventually shooting for professor!
also tagging @thehoneybeet, @mallstars for this enlarged get-to-know-you, @sweet-s0rr0w, @tackytigerfic, @oknowkiss, and breaking fandom quarantine barriers to tag @powerful-owl and @sineala 💕

Critics of the federal program say it encourages more carbon-intensive farming and are calling for Congress to lower subsidies for big, wealthy producers.
(A farm in Iowa is surrounded by flood water.)
The country’s farmers took in a record $19 billion in insurance payments in 2022, many because of weather-related disasters, according to a new analysis that suggests climate change could stoke the cost of insuring the nation’s farmers and ranchers to unsustainable levels.
The Environmental Working Group, which has for decades critically scrutinized the Federal Crop Insurance Program, published new research Thursday, finding that the cost of the program has soared from just under $3 billion in 2002 to just over $19 billion last year.
“We found between 2002 and 2022 the crop insurance program sent over $161 billion to farmers, and annual payouts in 2022 were 546 percent more than they were in 2001,” said Anne Schechinger, an agricultural economist and director at EWG.
The crop insurance program has become increasingly popular with farmers over the past 20 years as a way to protect themselves from drops in prices and weather-related disasters.
Taxpayers subsidize about 60 percent of the premiums; farmers cover about 40 percent and pay deductibles on smaller losses.
“We know that part of the increase in payouts comes from an increase in participation in the program, as well as crop prices,” Schechinger said. “But we also know that payments for weather-related losses are also going up.”
EWG also analyzed who received the bulk of the payments, confirming previous research showing that most of them are going to large, wealthy farms that grow one or two crops.
Roughly 80 percent of subsidies go to the largest 20 percent of farms. That’s in part because they produce most of the crops, but also because smaller farmers have a more difficult time qualifying for the programs. This, critics say, encourages the growth of large farms that use production methods that are more fuel and carbon intensive.
In the past two decades, EWG found that roughly three-fourths of all indemnity payments, about $121 billion, went to corn, soybeans, wheat and cotton, and nearly $56 billion to corn growers alone.
Critics of the program worry that it will incentivize more carbon-intensive farming. Already U.S. farms are responsible for 11 percent of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions. A recent analysis suggests that percentage could rise to about 30 percent of the total by 2050—more than any other sectors of the economy—if farms and ranches don’t shrink their carbon impact.
EWG’s research dovetails with other recent studies showing that the warming atmosphere has increased crop insurance payments and discourages farmers from adapting to climate change. More research also suggests that climate change will likely stoke crop insurance payments in coming years and finds that crop insurance premiums will rise.
–
Crop insurance protects farmers from the free market of the ecosystem.
When your industry destabilizes the ecosystem and the ecosystem responds by destroying your product, the taxpayers will bail you out.
Rural America hates socialism but they love socialism when it helps them avoid the consequences of ecocide.

Professional Indemnity and Permanent Whole Life Insurance: Essential Policies in Dallas - Kang Group Services
In today’s unpredictable world, having the right insurance coverage is critical for both individuals and businesses. Whether you are a professional offering services or someone planning for long-term financial security, selecting the appropriate insurance policies can provide the protection and peace of mind you need. Two crucial policies to consider are Professional Indemnity in Dallas and Permanent Whole Life Insurance. Kang Group Services is a trusted provider that offers both, helping clients secure their future.
What is Professional Indemnity Insurance?
Professional Indemnity Insurance, also known as Errors and Omissions (E&O) insurance, is designed to protect businesses and professionals from legal claims related to mistakes, negligence, or inadequate service. This coverage is especially important for professionals such as consultants, lawyers, accountants, engineers, architects, and others whose services directly impact clients. Even a small oversight can result in a costly lawsuit, and having the right indemnity coverage can protect your financial well-being.
Why is Professional Indemnity Insurance Important?
In today’s litigious society, the risk of being sued for an alleged mistake or misjudgment has never been higher. Even with the best intentions and expertise, professionals can make errors that result in financial losses for their clients. Without Professional Indemnity Insurance, a lawsuit could severely impact your business operations and reputation.
For example, a miscalculation in a construction project could delay completion and cause financial harm to a client. A consultant’s advice could inadvertently lead to an undesirable outcome, leading to financial losses for the client. In such cases, the costs of legal defense and potential settlements can be overwhelming.
Professional Indemnity Insurance covers legal defense costs, settlements, and damages awarded to the claimant. It also safeguards your reputation by showing clients that you are committed to protecting their interests.
Permanent Whole Life Insurance: What You Need to Know
Permanent Whole Life Insurance is a type of life insurance policy that provides lifelong coverage as long as premiums are paid. Unlike term life insurance, which only covers you for a specific period, whole life insurance ensures that your beneficiaries receive a death benefit no matter when you pass away. Additionally, whole life insurance policies build cash value over time, offering a source of savings that can be accessed during your lifetime.
Whole life insurance is a popular choice for those who want long-term security, investment opportunities, and the peace of mind that their family will be taken care of after they’re gone. Kang Group Services offers Permanent Whole Life Insurance policies tailored to your individual financial goals.
Key Benefits of Permanent Whole Life Insurance
Lifelong Coverage: Whole life insurance guarantees that your family will receive a death benefit, regardless of when you pass away. This ensures that your loved ones will be financially supported in the future.
Cash Value Accumulation: As you pay premiums, your policy builds cash value. This can be accessed through loans or withdrawals, providing you with a flexible financial tool. The cash value grows tax-deferred, meaning you won’t have to pay taxes on gains until you withdraw the funds.
Fixed Premiums: Whole life insurance premiums remain fixed throughout the life of the policy. This can help with budgeting, as you won’t have to worry about premium increases as you age.
Investment Opportunities: The cash value of a whole life insurance policy can be used as an investment vehicle. Over time, this value grows, providing you with additional financial security and options for retirement or other financial needs.
Why Choose Kang Group Services for Your Insurance Needs?

Gina: I've got to go talk to the Borough Commander! Smithy: Off for your pat on the back? Gina: You'll have to pay to talk to me soon! Amber: Feeling a bit rough Sarge, after Yvonne's do? Smithy: *fake smile* None of your business. Gina: *chuckles at hung over Smithy* Oh dear... *tweaks his tie* You look lovely... Smithy: I don't remember much past the champagne, but what I do know is that I should never try and keep up with you...
Smithy: It was probably better it ended when it did. I know I got out my depth... Gina: You lightweight... Smithy: I don't mean cos of the drink...
Gina: *to Smithy* Oi you, lighten up. ...And I think you should stick to fruit juice in the future.
Siobhan: Insurance Indemnity form? Smithy: Yep, it's nothing to worry about Siobhan, it just means if you get shot, stabbed, or even strangled, I'm not responsible. Siobhan: Is it alright if I read it first? Smithy: *smirk and watches her walk off* Am I right in thinking this wasn't her idea? Sheelagh: She's never at her best this early, but she's always been interested in a police career, deep down. Smithy: Very deep down by the look of it. Sheelagh: She's bored rigid in her job at the minute, I'm hoping this might inspire her. Smithy: Well, we'll have to make it exciting as possible for her, won't we! Smithy: I want you out on the High Street today, high visibility; let's show the public that we're value for money...
Smithy: JT mentioned you were upset this morning. Did the postman bring you some bad news? Smithy: June, if you need a shoulder, take your pick.
Zain: Smithy, we might have a lead on Pete Larsen... Smithy: Good, the sooner he goes down the better. Zain: So you can walk off into the sunset with his wife? Smithy: No. Me and Louise, we're finished. Zain: Well that's a good thing. Sleeping with Pete Larsen's wife is about as suicidal as it can get. So look on the bright side, your life expectancy just increased dramatically. Reg: It seems what he's nicked isn't quite right... Smithy: I've had better tat out of a Christmas cracker...
Smithy: What happened to your motor? Man: *shrugs* Kids? Smithy: A brick through the window…yes. Paint stripper? *raises eyebrow*
Smithy: Jimmy, you disappoint me… Jimmy: It’s all legal! George (Kerry’s Dad): It’s good to meet you, Smithy. I’d heard a lot about you. Smithy: Yeah? George: You and Kerry were close? Went out? Smithy: No, we er…we were just mates. George: Good mates from what I can work out, she had a lot of time for you. Smithy: I had a lot of time for her n’all. George: I don’t think she was finding it easy being a police officer, but she said if there was one copper she thought she had to model herself on. Smithy: Really? George: She thought you were brilliant, tough when you had to be, always fair, never unkind. She saw you as a knight in shinning armor, definitely one of the good guys
Gabriel: I wonder where I’d have gone for my stag party. Smithy: Some dive, probably. Usually the best man’s job. Gabriel: Well that’d probably have been you.
Bob: What you doing? Smithy: I'm taking you for a drink. Bob: No, hold on a minute, I've still got me slippers on, Shirley's not home, I haven't eaten! Smithy: Yeah well, don't worry about your slippers, you can leave her a note, and I'm sure she'll keep your dinner in the oven, and anyway, I've already shot you once. You don't think a kidnap's gonna bother me, do ya?
Ian: You don't have a bottle of water up front, do you Dan? I'm not feeling too well. Dan: Fraid not, sir. You still suffering from the fish? Ian: Yes...how do you know? Dan: Er, Mrs Barrett spoke to me this morning, and she knows I suffer from food allergies, and erm, she asked me which antihistamine I find works best... Ian: Really? What brand's that? Dan: Hister..histerects. Ian: Histerects? Never heard of that one, will have to keep my eye open for it. Roger: Sarge, can I have a word? Smithy: If it's sorry, yeah...
Dan: I should have sat tight, shouldn't I? I should have let Prosser take the flack.
Nick: "An apology would be nice, Michael." Mickey: *glares and walks past him*
Tony: "What's that?" Dan: "A pasty" Reg: "Cornish?" Dan: *sniffs* "...yeah."
Dan: Don't puke on me trousers, I haven't got another pair.
Dan: "No I said I wasn't going on a hot date" Leela: "Why, you going on a cold one?"
*Dan and Amber are arguing in the corridor* Smithy: Now now girls, come here, I've got a job for you
Mickey: It's not Kate... Debbie: Aww, you do fancy her... Mickey: Shut up will ya!

ARTICLE 84. If the future spouses agree upon a regime other than the absolute community of property, they cannot donate to each other in their marriage settlements more than one-fifth of their present property. Any excess shall be considered void.
Donations of future property shall be governed by the pro-visions on testamentary succession and the formalities of wills.
If the future spouses’ property regime is not absolute community, donations of more than 1/5 of either party’s present property is considered void.
If the property regime is absolute community, there is no limitation as to the extent of what may be donated by one of the future spouses in favor of the other.
Rationale behind the provision is, in the regime of absolute community, the spouses are considered co-owners of all the property owned by them at the time of the celebration of the marriage or acquired thereafter.
No spouse should be allowed to take advantage of the love of the other to acquire property from the latter.
FISHER August 10, 1918
In Harding v Commercial Union Assurance Company, Mr. Harding gifted his wife a Studebaker automobile worth three thousand pesos. Mrs. Harding insured the automobile for one hundred and fifty pesos through a local agent of defendant Commercial Union.
When the automobile was totally destroyed by fire, Mrs. Harding sought to collect indemnity from the insurance company. The defendant refused to pay citing, among others, that the policy is void in violation of the ART 1334 of the then Civil Code (now the Article 87 of Family Code) which provides that all gifts between spouses during marriage shall be void.
The trial court gave plaintiffs judgment for the amount demanded, with interest and costs, and from that decision the defendant appeals.
On this issue, the Supreme Court held that the defendant is in no position to challenge the validity of the donation or gift since it had no rights or interests in the car in question whether present, remote or inchoate. The SC ordered that the judgment of the lower court which is in favor of the petitioners be affirmed.

Unlike term life insurance, which provides coverage for a specified term, whole life insurance offers lifelong protection. This means that as long as premiums are paid, beneficiaries are assured a death benefit, providing a solid foundation for legacy planning.
Flexible Payment Options and Affordability
A standout feature of American Income Life is its commitment to affordability and flexibility in payment options. Recognizing that financial situations can vary, the company strives to make insurance accessible to a broad range of individuals. This commitment is reflected in the availability of flexible premium payment options, allowing policyholders to choose plans that align with their budgetary constraints while still providing comprehensive coverage.
Supplemental Benefits for Added Security
American Income Life goes beyond traditional life insurance by offering supplemental benefits that enhance overall financial security. These can include critical illness coverage, hospital indemnity plans, and accidental death coverage. Such supplemental benefits not only provide additional layers of protection but also contribute to a more holistic approach to legacy planning, addressing potential challenges that may arise during one's lifetime.
No-Cost Child Safe Kit: A Unique Offering for Families
For families concerned about the safety and well-being of their children, American Income Life provides a distinctive and valuable benefit – the Child Safe Kit. This cash value can be accessed by the policyholder through loans or withdrawals, providing a financial cushion for future needs. This feature adds a layer of flexibility, allowing individuals to leverage the accumulated cash value for purposes such as education expenses, home purchases, or supplemental retirement income.
Legacy Planning Through Beneficiary Designations
A crucial aspect of legacy planning is the strategic designation of beneficiaries. American Income Life empowers policyholders with the ability to designate beneficiaries based on their specific wishes. This flexibility ensures that the benefits of the policy can be directed towards loved ones, charitable causes, or other entities according to the individual's values and objectives, contributing to the intentional creation of a lasting legacy.

The Boonville Plague, constant diarrhea, probably due to the poor plumbing
I was a member of Rev. Moon’s movement—called the Unification Center at 6502 Dana St., Oakland, California, and at New Ideal City Ranch, Boonville, California—from August 7, 1975, to January 16, 1976.
I was one of the countless number of people who experienced the Boonville Plague, constant diarrhea probably due to the poor plumbing which always seemed to be in need of repair. In any event, I soon found that almost all disease and injury is considered as “spiritual problems”. Unity is constantly stressed as the only way to feel “Heavenly Father’s heart,” Father being Moon himself, and not God as the initial training indicated. I heard dozens of members pledge to do anything —including die for Moon.
A similar loyalty was expressed for Onni and Dr. Mose Durst who are considered to be the True Parents of the United States by Jeremiah Schnee, Michelle Tunis and the rest of the leaders and followers in the Bay Area houses. “Unity” was supposed to be accomplished by following “the higher standard of love” that my “center person” or leader had. “Don’t worry about externals” was the common response to my request for warmer clothing and repair of broken glasses that were giving me headaches. There were no doctors at either Boonvllle or Oakland, so when I felt really ill, I ignored their suggestion of extra rest and went to a doctor who treated me for pneumonia.
I finally left the cult, unable to accept their assertion that Jews have been paying indemnity throughout history—the slaughter in Nazi Germany is often cited—for not following the will of God. Members are told the best thing they can do for their parents is to stay at the center. When my mother was about to have an operation, I asked to see her and was denied that request. I was told my parents would have to pay a terrible indemnity in the spirit world (heaven) if they ever influenced me to leave the movement.
Looking back, I can see it was the poor health and intense pace and isolation at the Boonville training center that makes people believers of Divine Principle, because it doesn’t stand up to any logical religious or ideological scrutiny. I hope that, at the very least, an effort can be made that would allow cult members to see what’s really going on in the world, not with another member, but for themselves, and then decide what is right.
Respectfully yours,
David L. Needle

Getting Indemnity Life-time Finance at the Most Competitive Rates: Advice No. 4 from 509
Regardless of the number of times you have encountered it elsewhere, it bears reiterating that, when trying to decide how much life insurance you should have, information is truly power. When providing information online regarding a potential life insurance purchase, be careful what information you disclose. Numerous con artists pose as life insurance providers when, in fact, they are merely attempting to gather your information and steal your identity. Try to keep in mind that a zip code should be the only first information you are required to provide for a quote.
You must ascertain whether your life insurance plan has any exclusions or posp limits. A life insurance plan will not pay for specific things. Take the time to learn what is and is not covered by the life insurance you have if you are concerned about leaving your family in debt.
Paying your life insurance premiums once a year will help you save some money. Due to the common practise of charging a modest price to get the monthly invoices, many life insurance firms are going to charge you slightly less. Just be careful to do this if you possess the money to.
It's crucial to start planning for the future right away! Avoid putting your family in a difficult financial situation or crisis after your passing. To make everyone's lives a little bit simpler while they are still on this earth, use the advice above to assist you or someone you love in making future plans.

Verify that the premiums charges are the ones you promised to pay and that wealthbuddy posp all the benefits for which you applied are included.
It can be challenging for numerous individuals to decide when to buy life insurance. The best suggestion is to make plans based on the date you anticipate your dependents will stop depending on you for support. For instance, if your children graduate from college, they will be monetarily secure and won't want as much assistance from you, so you may plan your insurance accordingly.
Make sure everyone who will be affected by your policy is aware of what to expect in the event of your death. When it comes time to submit a claim, they should be aware of the insurance coverage amount, where to get the necessary paperwork, and who to speak with at the insurance provider.

Choosing the quantity of coverage you require is the first factor to take into account when buying your initial life insurance policy. Simply multiplying your existing yearly earnings by eight will accomplish this. This is not nearly ideal, though, because every person's situation and needs—along with those of their dependents—are different. More coverage might occasionally be more affordable when it comes to life insurance. The price per hundred dollars of protection will drop as the quantity covered rises. For some businesses, the arithmetic works out so that paying monthly premiums for a larger insurance actually results in a savings. When looking for insurance, make sure to get rates for several different levels of coverage.

Best West Coast Road Trip: 21 Must-See Scenic Spots
A long and winding road trip along the west coast of the United States is a great way to celebrate a few days off from the daily grind. In the United States, residents can seek their perfect place from the mountains and greenery of the Pacific Northwest to wine country to the dry deserts of Southern California.
Whether you rent a car or drive your own, each spot on this trip offers unique, diverse and endless variation. So, let’s hit the west coast and visit 21 scenic spots along the way with tips for safety, places to sleep and, of course, places to eat!
Why Choose a Road Trip?
There’s as many road trips as there are preferences. You can make them as structured – or as spontaneous – as you want! Just the act of locking the front door, jumping into the car and driving away is a declaration of freedom. If life throws some curveballs during your trip, maintaining that spirit of adventure will give you the flexibility to adjust.
Of course, there are things that should be planned:
Give some love to the trusty steed (your car) that is going to take you on these far-flung adventures.
Make sure your car insurance is current, your oil changes are up to date and your tires, brakes and fluids are all ready for the rigors of the road
Pack some extra chargers, some entertainment and good music, snacks and water! Many of the spots on our list are parks, so find the most affordable package before you leave. You can purchase annual or one-time passes that will get you in every park.
Safety First on Your Adventure
Although you and your passengers are on a carefree adventure to indulge and imbibe, one of the best things you can do is to keep safety first and foremost. Here’s a handy list of things to keep in mind.
On-the-Go Protection
If you will be driving in strange places, you’ll want to be safe if something happens. For example, your 6-year-old (or your grown spouse!) may lock the keys in the car. If you drive over the wrong thing you may end up with two flat tires. Even having your car overheat as you make your way through stunning desert vistas is not impossible…
The way to make sure your trip isn’t interrupted by an event like this is to add roadside assistance to your policy. This coverage is cheap compared to the peace of mind it can provide when you are driving through unfamiliar places. Your roadside assistance should cover you even in a rental car.
One other possible coverage to add is travel club and hospital indemnity. This cheap package will help you pay for medical costs, aside from your health insurance and auto insurance, if there is an accident and you wind up in the hospital.
Car Rental
If you don’t want to use your car, you may end up choosing a rental. Rentals are in short supply these days, so be sure and get a reservation so you don’t end up trying to fit 6 people in a compact!
Make sure you go in with a clear understanding of what your personal auto insurance will cover. For example, does your policy offer some of the same protections the rental company is asking if you want to add? No reason to duplicate.
If something happens along the way to your personal vehicle, such as an accident, you may want to continue your trip if everyone is OK. In that case, having rental care reimbursement on your policy will come in handy.
Strangers in a Strange Land
OK, we borrowed that title a little bit, but keep in mind as you travel that as carefree as your time on the open road is, you still need to use some common sense. If you must bring valuables, don’t flaunt them. Take good care of your credit cards and cash. Be cautious with strangers who seem overly friendly. And if you overdo it in wine country, make sure you are in a safe place with people you trust and that someone not drinking has the keys
21 Scenic Spots on the West Coast
Of course, there are more than 21 scenic spots on any west coast jaunt. Use this guide as a starting – or finishing – point and add your own best places to visit as you go along.
1. Whidbey Island, WA
We are going to begin on Whidbey Island. There are several ways to get to this seahorse-shaped island. You may choose to take a longer ferry from a different point, but we’ll be on the Mukilteo ferry, which is a 20-minute ride over to Whidbey Island. The Mukilteo ferry is just north of Seattle – about an hour’s drive depending on traffic.
Most tourists want to check out Deception Pass State Park and take in the sweeping views.
Duration: You may want to devote a day to exploring Whidbey Island. If you just want to eat at a really good seafood spot, it could be a 3 to 5-hour trip there and back.
Hint: Ferry lines on the weekends can be long. There is a concession stand and a restaurant, but if at all possible, begin your journey on a weekday. Ferries run every half hour. There are also alternate ways to get to Whidbey, as well as other ferry points, that you can explore.
2. Seattle
When you wake up on Day 2, you’ll want to wander around the famous Pike Place Market to get your morning cup of joe from the original Starbucks. Find some breakfast and hit the Space Needle, a thrill with breathtaking views of the Cascade Mountains and Mount Rainier.
You can easily spend a day exploring the charms of Seattle, but if you are ready to hit the road after a few hours, take off for Olympic National Park.
Next stop: Olympic National Park (about 2 hours north and west).
3. Olympic National Park, WA
There is much to see and do inside Olympic National Park and a variety of ecosystems to check out, including subalpine, coast, rain forest, and lowland forest. Located inside the Olympic Peninsula, you can spend what remains of the day after driving over from Seattle and then stay at one of the lodges (reservations are highly recommended). The park is huge and since there is no one road linking it all, you can plan your activities based on your interests or just hop in the car and start driving around.
Summer months are the busiest, so plan accordingly.
Next stop: Mount Rainier, roughly a 4-hour drive.
4. Mount Rainier, Washington
If you’ve always wanted to see an active volcano, then Mount Rainier is the perfect place for you. Depending on the time of year, you can hike, camp, ski and sled. There are several beautiful places to visit inside the park system, including Paradise, one of the most popular. There is a hotel in Paradise for those who want to make a day and night of it, as well as other overnight options.
Hint: Paradise has some great trails for those who want to see the glorious offerings of the wildflower meadows. Keep in mind the area has an elevation of 5,400 feet and some trails will offer quite a workout.
Next stop: Columbia River, about 3 hours west.
5. Columbia River Gorge, Oregon
The majestic Columbia River Gorge is a must-see spot. Waterfalls, wildflowers, hikes and leisurely strolls, all combined with spectacular scenery add up to a memorable piece of American beauty. You can also take advantage of a hand-crafted beer and farm-fresh food at the Gorge, too. Since your next destination is 7 hours due south, you may want to find a lodge and sleep off some of those potent potables!
Next stop: Crater Lake, 7 hours due south.
6. Crater Lake National Park, Oregon
Traveling in summer? You may still want to bring some winter coats if you plant to make Crater Lake a stop. The park was formed by a volcano causing the collapse of a mountain top. There is snow on the ground for much of the year, but the deepest lake in the United States is a pristine and awe-inspiring color of blue you won’t soon forget.
Next stop: It’s a 4 hour drive due west to reach the next scenic stop, Redwood.
7. Redwood National Park, California
If you are going to take a west coast jaunt, it’s obligatory to get a picture at the base of one of the tallest trees on Earth at Redwood National Park. Since you are coming off at least a few hours at Crater Lake and 4 hours on the road, you may want to find accommodations and tackle Redwood the next day. However, if you just want the picture as proof that you stopped, you can take a 5-minute walk to the Big Tree Wayside, snap your photo and be on your way.
But there are places to stay all around Redwood and plenty of restaurants. If you want to get your picture, have dinner and tuck in for the night, you can spend a few hours the next day exploring a little more of this beautiful attraction.
Next stop: Lake Tahoe, Nevada – 8 to 9 hours
8. Lake Tahoe, Nevada
Depending on the time of the year, you can have fun with water sports or ski the slopes. Lake Tahoe has been experiencing drought in the last few years, as has much of California and Nevada. At this point, significant snowpack shows encouraging signs that Lake Tahoe will rebound and at least get to its fill line.
Lake Tahoe offers a 72-mile gorgeous drive, called the Most Beautiful Drive in America, which offers food, shopping, paddleboat rentals, casinos and a large variety of other attractions. There are plenty of places to spend the night so you can be totally refreshed for your next stop: San Francisco!
Next stop: San Francisco – 4 hours
9. San Francisco, CA
No west coast journey would be complete without a stop in San Francisco. There is so much to do and see here, we can’t possibly list it all. Some highlights, however, would include:
Alcatraz – a short ferry ride will take you over to “The Rock.” Be warned that lines are long in peak tourist months. You can purchase tickets in advance.
Fisherman’s Wharf – between the awesome food and street musicians, there’s something for everyone at this iconic landmark. Stroll down Pier 39 for a first-hand look at all things San Francisco.
Chinatown – If you are feeling brave (and you don’t speak Chinese), visit a Chinatown restaurant with a menu in Chinese. And even if the menu is in a familiar language, you may not recognize all the ingredients. But take heart – you won’t walk away hungry after sampling the delights available here.
Tip: It never really gets warm at the waterfront. So, pack a light jacket or you’ll be buying one from one of the vendors who sell light fleece jackets to teeth-chattering visitors.
Next stop: It’s in the same city but deserves its own mention.
10. Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco
On your way out of San Fran, take a stop at the Golden Gate Bridge. There’s a welcome center where you can buy souvenirs and learn about the history of this iconic landmark.
Next stop: Santa Cruz, CA – Due south for almost 2 hours
11. Pacific Coast Highway
On this particular journey, we’ll be picking up the Pacific Coast Highway as we head out of San Francisco for points south. The Pacific Coast Highway is almost a destination in its own right and heading north to south gives the driver the absolute best views while motoring along this marvel of modern road building (see there is a method to our madness).
12. Santa Cruz, CA
There are many things to do and see in Santa Cruz. Besides great beaches, food and wine, the legendary Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is a must see for anybody traveling with children – or anybody who loves an amusement park over the stunning Pacific Ocean. Spend the day exploring nature or shopping for one-of-a-kind artisan crafted treasures.
Next stop: An hour-and-a-half down the scenic PCH to Big Sur.
13. Big Sur, CA
Just like many of our unique destinations, Big Sur can be a drive-through or a longer stay. It’s an iconic place that you may recognize from plenty of movies, TVs and commercials. You can simply drive through Big Sur on the PCH and pull over now and then to gaze at the Pacific Ocean splendor. Or you can choose a longer stay and visit Big Sur State Park or stop to shop and eat at Nepenthe, a landmark place that comes complete with Southern California’s good vibes.
You’ll probably want to leave early to arrive at your next stop (hint, it’s a biggie) in time to rest up for the following day’s adventure.
Next stop: Yosemite, 5 hours east
14. Yosemite National Park
Visiting this quintessential of America’s parks is a must do on your itinerary. However, spontaneous won’t work here as you need reservations just to enter Yosemite National Park. If you want to make a day and night of it, you’ll also need to reserve your lodging, camping and backpacking. Park officials advise to pack your patience as millions of people visit here in the peak months between April and October.
There’s so much to do and see, you’ll want to explore the website and make some plans.
Tip: Start early to avoid the crowds. Get a good night’s sleep before embarking on the next leg of the trip, which involves driving through Death Valley and into Sin City.
Next stop: Death Valley and into Las Vegas – 5-8 hours to Death Valley and 3 hours past that to Las Vegas
15. Death Valley
With temps hitting above 130 degrees in the summer, you’ll want to make sure you have plenty of water before hitting the road through Death Valley. It’s called the hottest place on Earth for a reason! For those who want to adventure into the desert fun, stop by Furnace Creek Visitor Center for some tips and suggestions. If you plan to hike, take precautions.
Next stop: Vegas, baby – 3 hours.
16. Las Vegas, NV
If you are a newbie to Sin City, decide on a few things to do to mark your trip and come back again if you don’t check everything off your list. Las Vegas has too much to do and see to get it all in one trip. However, there are a few experiences you shouldn’t miss, including:
Taking in a show. Las Vegas is known for its live entertainment. From the Beatles Cirque du Soleil “Love” show to famous magician David Copperfield, there’s a show happening somewhere, anytime!
Visiting Fremont Street Experience. You’ll marvel at the spectacular display of lights and technology overhead while grooving to live music. It’s an all senses experience you won’t want to miss. And it’s free! The adventurous (and patient) can buy tickets and get in line for the zip line that takes you above the crowds.
Nothing is cheap here. From traveling around the city (buying a bus pass is the best way to go) to playing the slots to finding entertainment and a place to sleep, save up for this spot in your trip.
Next stop: Santa Barbara, 6 hours.
17. Santa Barbara, CA
After the whirlwind of Las Vegas, Santa Barbara is the perfect next stop to catch your breath. Also known as the American Riviera, Santa Barbara offers 7 beautiful beaches if it’s time for that sun-kissed glow, museums, restaurants and, of course, wine.
Next stop: Santa Monica, 1.5 hours
18. Santa Monica, CA
Continue down the lovely PCH, through infamous Malibu and into Santa Monica on your way to Los Angeles. There are plenty of beaches, food and nightlife for those who want to immerse themselves in the SoCal lifestyle.
Next stop: Los Angeles, 30 minutes
19. Los Angeles, CA
After your leisurely drive down the PCH through cities that illustrate the absolute stunning beauty of the Golden State, it’s time to tackle Los Angeles, the City of Angels. As with Las Vegas and San Francisco, deciding ahead of time what you want to do while here will save you some time, angst and probably money. Some of the major attractions include:
Disneyland – Get there early, pack your patience and take lots of money. The park is a day-long adventure of iconic rides and attractions that everyone should visit at least once.
Universal Studios Hollywood – There’s everything from Harry Potter to Super Mario at Universal Studios. It’s a little more laid-back than Disneyland, so a possible respite for mom and dad while still being fun and exciting.
Next stop: Joshua Tree, between 2 and 3 hours
20. Joshua Tree National Park, CA
For those who want to bask in the desert sun, Joshua Tree offers not one, but two desert ecosystems in the Mojave and the Colorado. Strong winds, gusty rainstorms and the darkest of nights will provide you the desert memories you crave. The park is always open and there are 4 visitors centers open during regular business hours.
Since there are no restaurants, hotels or gas stations, you’ll want to pack in some water and food if you plan to stay for any length of time. The park has limited cell phone reception, but if you want to do some stargazing before your last stop and unwind from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles, Joshua Tree is the destination.
21. San Diego, CA
This is the quintessential southern California destination city, with rolling surf and waves in impossibly blue water on one side to horse country in the hills above on the other side. Learn to surf, take a yoga class on the beach, take a whale watching tour, visit a real live post-WWII ship at the USS Midway Museum, take in the world-renowned San Diego Zoo and Safari Park or just eat the freshest of seafood to your heart’s content.
San Diego is a wonderful place to relax and unwind after your wild and crazy, action-packed west coast road trip.
