TRIGGER WARNING: Discussion of Cancer, child abuse and rape
Smiffina Episodes - Episode 295
Gina received the bad news that she had cervical cancer last episode and had to stay in for tests. Luckily they've caught it early so the prognosis is good. She's running late for work but she covers with June, telling her her car has broken down and she asks her to hold the fort, promising to be in as soon as possible. "Yesterdays investigation went well, it gave us the chance to look at your bowel and bladder." "Ooh lucky you!" He wants to run a few more test on her whilst she's there and advises she tells work about it. "No, I don't do that tea and sympathy stuff." her consultant frowns, "You'll feel more isolated if you don't." Gina simply shrugs. "I'm used to that." 💔
It's Marilyn's funeral that day, but Gabriel's mind is on Gemma, wondering if the Child Protection Team had spoken to her and were looking after her. Sheelagh teases him for having grown a social concience. "It's not like you!" she chuckles. As they reach the top of the ramp, Rowan Morrell appears (she's covering for Neil whilst he has time off) to tell him it looks as though Gemma's stepmum has done a bunk with her and her brother. Rowan asks them to stay on the case and help find her. As they search they keep flirting... Finally they find the step mother - she says she's sent the children down to be with her sister. They don't believe her and keep investigating and flirting...
Lance and Amber are at the hospital for a case when Amber happens to see Gina speaking to a receptionist. She's handed a leaflet that she disposes of as she leaves. Amber - who has literally hidden so Gina doesn't see her - has a look at the leaflet, cottoning onto what Gina was being seen for...
Amber and Lance has messed up on their case by taking their victim's statement and then hurrying over to arrest their suspect. Unfortunately any sharp brief can point out that any DNA of the victim found on the suspect or in their flat can now be blamed on those two. Gina sighs and says she'll sort it and asks where the victim is - she's back at St Hughes still so Gina must - reluctantly - return.
Gabriel uses an excuse of buying flowers for Sheelagh to speak to the missing girls grandma who is a florist. Sheelagh is amused and accepts them - by kissing his cheek before getting in the car. Gabriel looks thoughtful... He suspects that Mrs Bentley, Gemma's step mum, hates Gemma because she reminds her - and her father - of his former wife who died. She thinks the boys are at her sisters - but that Gemma is still in the property. He opens up to Sheelagh. "I know what it's like to crave love and not get it back. We don't want her growing up like me." "I don't know, she could do worse." Sheelagh smiles.
Gina speaks to the victim and interviews her, the poor elderly lady is terrified and keeps saying she doesn't want to make a fuss. Gina sends Lance and Amber to go and get a drink whilst she talks to her, aware there's something that Pearl is hiding from them. Sadly Pearl admits that the man who attacked her also raped her. Pearl doesn't want anyone else to know. She will deny it, she just wants to be left alone. She can't bear it to become public knowledge. "Somethings are best left secret. Can you understand that?" she begs Gina - who sadly does.
Gina interviews the suspect who is a "right cocky so and so." she suspends the interview and tells him she knows exactly what he's done. His solicitor tries to stand to stop her, "Sit down you, you're defending a rapist! Did he tell you that? No, I didn't think so." The brief sits. Gina gives him an option - he either admits the robbery and assault or she'll return to Pearl and do everything in her power to get her to change her mind so he's also charged for the rape. With no option - he coughs to the assault and burglary.
Gabriel returns to the house and barges his way in, conducting an illegal search of the premises to find Gemma. He locates her in the basement much to the horror of her step mother who had bound and abused her.
At the end of her shift, Amber lets herself into Gina's office and tells her that she saw her that morning and she saw her dispose of the leaflet she was given. She offers herself - nervously - to talk to her if she wants to. Gina smiles. "It's alright, you don't need to talk to the old bag about her health problems. You'll be relieved to know that I do not need a shoulder to cry on." She tells her not to tell anyone and sits with her head in her hands after dismissing Amber.
Gabriel is at the hospital after work, watching over Gemma. Sheelagh finds him and gently guides him away. He feels sorry for himself "Nothing I do turns out right." he says, worrying about Gemma ending up in care. Sheelagh reassures him he did everything he could to get the right outcome. "It's not enough though is it." he says - before Sheelagh pounces forward and kisses him. "You should have more faith in yourself, Gabriel. I do."

3. favorite line/scene you wrote this year
I probably shouldn’t admit this, for several reasons, but the line that made me laugh the most writing it was from Max Gets Chased: “Tell Max you like sleeping on the roof.”
The line I worked hardest on was from Not the End of the World:
Rachel Amber bears down on her with a grin that makes Max feel like she’s a bit player in a Jaws sequel.
Which…might not seem like much? But it involved a lot of rewrites and shuffling around of other elements before I got this line nailed.
Favourite scene? This minute? Rachel in the bath resolving mysteries in Fourth Time Pays for All. Ask me again, and that might change, though.
14. a fic you didn’t expect to write
Kinda most of them? I didn’t really plan much after the first few! Auld Acquaintance, Law of Unintended Consequences and Parliament of Fowls being actually somewhat planned.
Buuuut…I think Grit is the least expected in many senses. I wrote some Victoria Chase scenes for Not the End of the World, but they didn’t quite fit, so I cut them. One of those scenes was a Chloe and Victoria scene and I liked their dynamic so much I started writing Grit to explore it more. I wasn’t even sure I was going to post it. I was pretty sure it was going to be maybe 8,000 words and roughly five chapters long.
Oops!
Every time I’ve felt confident I have a handle on it, the story gets away from me again. Which is part of the reason why updates have been so slow! Which…seems like a good segue!
18. current number of wips
Ah, the public shaming part of the ask! Let’s see:
Law of Unintended Consequences
Chronicles of Amber (Um…yeah, that’s probably never getting finished, sorry.)
Grit
Arrrrcadia
Party Police
So…five? Not including any ongoing series…which would bring the tally up to seven…
There are also about five incomplete drafts of stories I may or may not go back to at some point. But I really need to finish the above first!
21. most memorable comment/review
I’ve been fortunate enough to receive largely positive and/or constructive comments, many of which have been awesome!
The first comment I got on my first fic this year, Auld Acquaintance! Because I was nervous as hell posting, I had no idea if anything I was doing was working, and that positive comment from Any_ILL encouraged me to keep going.
I also got a nice comment from Recourse at the end of that fic, which was a huge boost, because I was and am a huge fan of her writing! :)
Oh, and on Chronicles of Amber I got a comment from Lola_McGee which started a conversation about Paul Grice which morphed into a conversation about various things in various comments, moved over to tumblr, and resulted in us collaborating on a series together! So that was a good one!
Comments are the best. They really do make a huge difference! :)
24. favorite fic you read this year
I hoovered up a lot of great LiS fics last year, and the more I’ve gotten into writing, the less time I’ve had for reading, something I feel a bit guilty about. I’m sure there’s some great fics I’ve missed. (If anyone wants to leave recommendations in the notes, please do!)
Picking only one? Ugh. I’d have to go with Bloom by Recourse. It’s a really beautiful, funny, heartachey, positive fic that never shies away from the tougher issues, but still stays on the positive side of things. And Recourse writes really good prose and explores characters and emotional states superbly well. I suspect I’ve subconsciously ripped her off more than any other fic writer.
Buuuut, I also have to mention The August Bedroom of Tangled Sheets by Venividivigor as a truly sumptuously written and delightful Pricefield slice of life fic. And I’ve Got You Under My Skin, by Oripoke [Edit because I’m an idiot and put the title of a Scarlett Johannsen movie down instead of the fic title], for being a big, clever, sneaky, and fun Pricefield fic that takes on time paradoxes in a new way.
Oh! and read anything by RainingRoses05. She’s really, really good and is creating some great Pricefield fics.
Okay! That was a whole lot of answers! Thanks for all the questions! :)

Smiffina Episodes - Episode 372
After a bit of a gap where nothing important happened, only Lance being killed by a pair of gay serial killers (!) we are back again. Oh, and Will arrived last episode and was blah from the start.
Gina's after some criminals who have long evaded being locked up as part of a two day sting that she's really enjoying. She won't tell them what the second part is as it's a surprise. "What sort of surprise?" Reg asks. "A surprise surprise!" Gina rolls her eyes.
One of them Gina has history with as he escaped to Spain for life in Costa Del Crime, even sending her a postcard 'Weather's here, wish you were lovely'.
At the end of the day, Gina lets them in on what's going to happen. The big fish have been invited to be part of a television show with a difference. All members of the television show team are actually going to be members of Sun Hill Police. They're being tempted by big prizes, easy wins... "and when they sign on the dotted line-" "we nick 'em!"
And the name of the television show?
Cop The Lot!
They're playing on the greed of the criminals in the hope that they'll arrive as they've been told they're guarenteed a cash prize just by appearing. Thankfully it doesn't take long until they start to arrive, able to lock up several in just one afternoon.
"Simon Cowell, eat your heart out!"
Amber almost ruins it though with the largest criminal they're after - one Gina has wanted for ages - but thankfully Will is able to chase him down with Sam and arrest him anyway.
Back at the station, Gina rollocks Amber in her office. Not only did she almost ruin an operation that was months in the making, she's not been revising for her exams that she's due to take at the end of her probation. "You do bad, you make me look bad - and I don't like looking bad!" Gina hisses.

Smiffina Episodes - Episode 354
Neither are in this episode but it's just to give a little closure for TFG aftermath.
Adam and Ian have a meeting where Adam tells him appears that the death of The Fake Gabriel is suicide. Ian asks if anyone knew that TFG wasn't TRG before the day before. Adam doesn't answer but luckily Ian continues without seeming to realise, telling him he can't believe that it went on 2 years without being found out. Adam tells him he's just going to release to the press that an officer died on duty and it's being investigated. Ian tells him to keep the lid on - tight.
Sheelagh is lost, realising the last year of her life has pretty much been a lie. Amber wonders if Sheelagh - or June - knew any of the truth. Steve wonders why he ended it with Dan suggesting it was likely because he was about to be found out. Steve isn't convinced, wondering if there was more to The Snipers death after all. Adam hears them and asks them to keep it all as quiet as possible and within the station.

Smiffina Episodes - Episode 306
A stressed Smithy is slightly snippy this morning, especially when Yvonne notes that Gina is late. Smithy assures her there'll be a good reason for it and to stop worrying about everyone else and get on with her own duties.
Smithy catches up with Gina when she gets in and asks how her therapy went. She tells him that today is a good day and to prove it - and counteract the gossip after she finds out about Yvonne - she's going to go out on the beat with Dan and Amber. "Do you not think I'm up to it?" "...... no, no I'm not saying that.... I'll come with you!" "I don't need babysitting!" Smithy tries to repeat that he doesn't think it's a good idea. "Well I do. Me inspector, you Sergeant."
Amber tries to tell Gina to take it easy with them and Gina assures her she doesn't need looking after from her either. Dan spots a man they'd had trouble with earlier and catches him, dragging him back to the shop. Gina is amused by Dan's enthusiasm and lets him take the lead. Amber accuses him of being teachers pet and being after a gold star from Gina.
Dan's hard work pays off and there's an even bigger catch that they set up a sting for. Smithy tries to join Gina out with the back up but she's having none of it and makes him stay at the station to hold the fort. The man starts to kick off before back up arrives and Gina gets assaulted, though still manages to keep her prisoner pinned down until he's taken from her. She collapses when she's able to stand up and Amber gets her to the hospital asap. An unimpressed and worried Smithy rushes to A&E to find her. Gina insists she's fine, she was just winded and tries to discharge herself despite Smithy's attempts to keep her laid on the bed. Smithy sighs and tells her he'll wait outside for her. Gina tells Amber she doesn't want to repeat herself to her too to which Amber tells her that he's a friend, he cares about her and she's lucky to have him. Smithy growls at Amber for Gina ending up in hospital and she realises that he knows about her cancer. Smithy tries to bluff it at first before realising Amber genuinley does know - he warns her not to tell anyone else as if he finds out it's gotten round the station, he would be making her life very uncomfortable. Amber promises she won't tell anyone.

Trigger Warning: Discussions of cancer
Smiffina Episodes - Episode 296
Despite their kiss last night, Gabriel appears to be avoiding Sheelagh, asking to be moved to someting quieter following being at the hospital for most of the night. He tries to let her down gently, telling her it shouldn't have happened.
Gina books a taxi for a hospital appointment to pick her up mid shift. She reminds Amber not to say anything to anyone else, pointing out that noone else in the hospital knows - so she'd know who let it out, and who to come looking for.
Unfortunately she can't get away on time and has to ask Amber to drive her. Gina's already chomping at the bit to leave as soon as she arrives but the consultant has some grave news for her. Her tumour is stage 2, too advanced for surgery. She needs combined radiotherapy and chemotherapy. She has to attend every day with only the weekends off for the next 7 weeks. He advises she takes time off, warning she faces potential side effects of exhaustion and nausea amongst others. She shrugs it off, insisting that she will cope.
Gabriel reassures Sheelagh that he does have feelings for her but he's not the man she thinks he is and that he'd hurt her. She insists its up to her to make that decision but he just tells her he's taking some time off and that it can't work.

Smiffina Episodes - Episode 265
Only a little one for this ep:
Hello Amber! I know you must be infuriating to work with but I do have a massive soft spot for you. Bonus points for Tony's "Don't worry, Amber. Marilyn keeps him on a tight leash." when Amber and Reg are paired together. (if interested her first ep is 264) Ahem! On with the Smiffina.
It's the day of June's retirement party, Gina cracks a joke asking if someone is having a party to which Tony replies "Only the best Sergeant we've ever had." And Smithy turns to pout at him, faux affronted.🤣🤣
Andrea speaks to Smithy, telling him she's very nervous that Gabriel thinks its her that took the complaint to MIT. Smithy assures her it won't be too long, he's going to slip up - and he will pay for what he did to Kerry.
At June's retirement do, Tony practically has his tongue hanging out as he watches Amber appear, dolled up and ready to impress. Smithy grins. "You've no chance, grandad!" Tony can't help but protest, "She might like the older man!" he reasons before Amber reaches up and kisses Steve's cheek. "... I doubt it!" laughs Smithy.
June's cake is awesome! Gina makes a beautiful speech that really sums up June as a person and sergeant.
June: Ah Smithy, perfect, how did you know it was your turn?
Smithy: Take it you're not after my body?
June: Exactly. A large gin please.
Further bonus points for the short scene of Gina shepherding a drunk Jack away from June after he launched at her and hugged her 😂

Gina: I've got to go talk to the Borough Commander! Smithy: Off for your pat on the back? Gina: You'll have to pay to talk to me soon! Amber: Feeling a bit rough Sarge, after Yvonne's do? Smithy: *fake smile* None of your business. Gina: *chuckles at hung over Smithy* Oh dear... *tweaks his tie* You look lovely... Smithy: I don't remember much past the champagne, but what I do know is that I should never try and keep up with you...
Smithy: It was probably better it ended when it did. I know I got out my depth... Gina: You lightweight... Smithy: I don't mean cos of the drink...
Gina: *to Smithy* Oi you, lighten up. ...And I think you should stick to fruit juice in the future.
Siobhan: Insurance Indemnity form? Smithy: Yep, it's nothing to worry about Siobhan, it just means if you get shot, stabbed, or even strangled, I'm not responsible. Siobhan: Is it alright if I read it first? Smithy: *smirk and watches her walk off* Am I right in thinking this wasn't her idea? Sheelagh: She's never at her best this early, but she's always been interested in a police career, deep down. Smithy: Very deep down by the look of it. Sheelagh: She's bored rigid in her job at the minute, I'm hoping this might inspire her. Smithy: Well, we'll have to make it exciting as possible for her, won't we! Smithy: I want you out on the High Street today, high visibility; let's show the public that we're value for money...
Smithy: JT mentioned you were upset this morning. Did the postman bring you some bad news? Smithy: June, if you need a shoulder, take your pick.
Zain: Smithy, we might have a lead on Pete Larsen... Smithy: Good, the sooner he goes down the better. Zain: So you can walk off into the sunset with his wife? Smithy: No. Me and Louise, we're finished. Zain: Well that's a good thing. Sleeping with Pete Larsen's wife is about as suicidal as it can get. So look on the bright side, your life expectancy just increased dramatically. Reg: It seems what he's nicked isn't quite right... Smithy: I've had better tat out of a Christmas cracker...
Smithy: What happened to your motor? Man: *shrugs* Kids? Smithy: A brick through the window…yes. Paint stripper? *raises eyebrow*
Smithy: Jimmy, you disappoint me… Jimmy: It’s all legal! George (Kerry’s Dad): It’s good to meet you, Smithy. I’d heard a lot about you. Smithy: Yeah? George: You and Kerry were close? Went out? Smithy: No, we er…we were just mates. George: Good mates from what I can work out, she had a lot of time for you. Smithy: I had a lot of time for her n’all. George: I don’t think she was finding it easy being a police officer, but she said if there was one copper she thought she had to model herself on. Smithy: Really? George: She thought you were brilliant, tough when you had to be, always fair, never unkind. She saw you as a knight in shinning armor, definitely one of the good guys
Gabriel: I wonder where I’d have gone for my stag party. Smithy: Some dive, probably. Usually the best man’s job. Gabriel: Well that’d probably have been you.
Bob: What you doing? Smithy: I'm taking you for a drink. Bob: No, hold on a minute, I've still got me slippers on, Shirley's not home, I haven't eaten! Smithy: Yeah well, don't worry about your slippers, you can leave her a note, and I'm sure she'll keep your dinner in the oven, and anyway, I've already shot you once. You don't think a kidnap's gonna bother me, do ya?
Ian: You don't have a bottle of water up front, do you Dan? I'm not feeling too well. Dan: Fraid not, sir. You still suffering from the fish? Ian: Yes...how do you know? Dan: Er, Mrs Barrett spoke to me this morning, and she knows I suffer from food allergies, and erm, she asked me which antihistamine I find works best... Ian: Really? What brand's that? Dan: Hister..histerects. Ian: Histerects? Never heard of that one, will have to keep my eye open for it. Roger: Sarge, can I have a word? Smithy: If it's sorry, yeah...
Dan: I should have sat tight, shouldn't I? I should have let Prosser take the flack.
Nick: "An apology would be nice, Michael." Mickey: *glares and walks past him*
Tony: "What's that?" Dan: "A pasty" Reg: "Cornish?" Dan: *sniffs* "...yeah."
Dan: Don't puke on me trousers, I haven't got another pair.
Dan: "No I said I wasn't going on a hot date" Leela: "Why, you going on a cold one?"
*Dan and Amber are arguing in the corridor* Smithy: Now now girls, come here, I've got a job for you
Mickey: It's not Kate... Debbie: Aww, you do fancy her... Mickey: Shut up will ya!

TRIGGER: Discussion of cancer.
Smiffina Episodes - Episode 317
Gina is called to the scene when Yvonne hits a suspect in the head with her ASP during a struggle when he was choking her. The suspect is taken to hospital and Gina takes charge.
The next day Gina arrives looking done in before she already starts after a combined chemo/radiation therapy session. Smithy asks her how she's feeling and it's not good... He suggests she takes a day off and she refuses given that Yvonne and Honey are both being interviewed by the DPS. He tries to half suggest and half force her to take the day off and her look gives him the answer he needs as he quickly scarpers out of the room leaving Gina to smile fondly after him before grimacing at how rough she feels.
Hiding in the ladies later, Gina is really suffering from the nausea. Amber finds her and only succeeds in making her feel worse by bringing up the fact she had an aunt who had chemo and would vomit constantly. Gina stalks out and walks straight into JT, the new reception officer who moans about how Gina has been snapping everyone's head off. "You lot might have to put up with it but I don't!" he insists. Amber tells him to leave it when he tells her he's going to complain to the super about her. She ends up putting her foot in it and confirming to him that Gina has cancer.
JT makes a collection and walks through the station with a huge bouquet of flowers. Instantly Smithy is suspicious and tries to put him off presenting them to Gina after realising that he knows. He tries to find out how he knows as he didn't tell him and he knows Gina wouldn't... so it leaves one person. "Get rid of 'em, dump 'em, lose 'em, whatever - cos if she finds out-" "If she finds out what, Smithy? Oooh, who are those for?" JT hands them over, revealing he and the whole relief know - he even kisses her cheek in full dramatic delivery, making Smithy roll his eyes.
Gina returns to her office with the bouquet past officers all giving her sympathetic smiles and her looking incredibly uncomfortable.
"Put those in water." she tells Smithy, handing him the bouquet. "Preferably the Thames."
Amber's day doesn't get any better after she finds out Dan confessed something that she was using to blackmail him to do her dirty work around the station. She then walks into Smithy...
... who proceeds to bollock her for telling JT about Gina's cancer. He punishes her by making her clear his and Gina's property lists considering she blackmailed Dan into doing hers.
