Once in Italy, before Napoleon even became first consul, Berna led his army over the Alps to give Napoleon assistance and they were still so disciplined and well dressed (they got the nickname "The Gentleman Army" from the Italians) when they got there that Berthier, who apparently got a bit jealous, said something along the lines of that he wondered if those soldiers could fire a cannon or if they would be too scared to ruin their uniforms. Berna almost challenged him to a duel. Once again it was Napoleon who had to stop it.
