Completely agreed. Also I think a lot about the lead-up to this, because Shaoshang is not at all shocked by the inappropriate invitation to a private conversation--just the way he threatens her with marriage if she doesn't show up 😂 I think she is more aware than she pretends that he is interested in her, but romantic love and attraction are at this point useless to her. She isn't attracted to A'Yao (more or less clear in the sex ed scene), certainly isn't in love, but she does love him dearly as a friend she is comfortable being herself around. Having grown up the way she has, what A'Yao is offering her is more than she ever expected to get out of a marriage proposal, so she is not about to sabotage that. She still doesn't have Zisheng's measure, so even if she knows that he is interested in her and they are mutually attracted to each other, those are not elements she can build a better future around.

And yet it is so apparent that she doesn't want to lose these small interactions—the way she tries to assure him that they will see each other again, by offering to play the flute here or assuring him she and A'Yao will visit him together that time he was speaking to her when she was in a carriage with Yuanyi (and he completely neglected to even greet Yuanyi lol).

I think at this point, a relationship with the person she is in love with is not something she even considers possible. So she knows she is attracted to him in a way she isn't to anybody else, knows she wants to keep having these interactions, but is trying her best to find scenarios in which it would be acceptable for them to interact. She definitely doesn't want to lose these moments they have, and it is so heartbreaking because meanwhile HE is saying this goodbye I think not so much because he actually thinks he'll die on the battlefield, but to (1) remind them both but especially himself that if she married him, she would be living in anxiety a lot, and (2) because even though he fully intends to help her and A'Yao going forward, he doesn't actually want to socialize with them once she's married to someone else. All he wants is to hear from Shaoshang herself what she wants to do with her life, so that he can make arrangements around her accordingly.

Plus, the way he shows he knows exactly why she and A'Yao want to move away even as he entreats her to wait for the emperor to assign them somewhere safe, which he will arrange.

And this must be so completely mind-boggling to Shaoshang, who of course has never received this kind of dedication or love, and cannot quite process it but she is still so drawn to him.

They are both so visibly in love and it's such a beautiful scene.

Ok, but the private conversation among the ginkgo trees is so revealing and significant. While she still has her issues with him, SS has grown to respect LBY. He's saved her life and supported her multiple times; yes, he is intimidating and intense and demanding and confusing, but I think she holds him in high regard because of what he's done and his character. At first she is reluctant to stay and talk to him, but once he reveals he is leaving (probably not even coming back alive) and that it will be the last time they will meet as more than strangers, her attitude changes so fast. She's clearly bothered by the idea. She eagerly tells him that she'll play the flute for him if he comes back alive. Idk about her brain, but this is the moment her heart realizes she cares about this person as more than an acquaintance, that she doesn't wanna lose this connection. There are no romantic feelings on her part yet, I believe, but there's definitely something.

i hope shaosheng meets zisheng’s mom. one scene that really struck me is when he’s visiting his mom and he tells her he’s getting married, and that only good things will happen to their family now because shaosheng is becoming a part of it. it’s jsut !!! i want to think more about it..... part of what makes it !!! is how he said he’s mired in the past and so loving shaosheng and marrying her is the one thing in his life that’s about the future (so hope and growth and all those lovely things), but there’s something else too.....like telling his mom about her and framing it as something that’s happening to their family, not just to him...it’s like weighing their love and marriage against the devastation that his family’s borne. it’s a contrast.

as i read mdzs, i had a hard time wrapping my head around lan xichen. he was so kind but for whatever reason i didn't trust him. honestly, until it was explicitly said that he was being held captive and forced to seal up his cultivation that i trusted he wasn't a part of meng yao's scheme. then, it hit me.

lan xichen parallels yue qingyuan. they are both outwardly kind, of high status, and powerful. they both have a soft spot for questionable men and that soft spot leads them to ignoring the men's unsavory sides.

the same way yqy definitely knew that something was up with how shen jiu treated lou binghe, lxc had to have had SOME idea that meng yao was untrustworthy. not just meng yao, listen i love nie mingjue but the reason meng yaoi's plan was so perfect is because nmj had already been seen as so volatile. nmj was respected, yes, but he was also feared. he had a huge temper. lxc was used to looking away when poor behavior occured in favor of having a more positive view of the person
