The supreme Lord Jagannath out of His extraordinary compassion for the jivas, comes out on Ratha Yatra to give them His darshan and also mercifully allows them to pull the ropes of His chariot which eventually results in the liberation from cycle of birth and death.
Srila Prabhupada said: "Therefore if you participate in these car festivals, as it is stated in the scriptures, ratha ca vamanam drstva punar na vidyate… if you kindly see these Jagannath deities riding on these cars and in the procession,
and as Chaitanya Mahaprabhu chanted Hare Krishna mantra infront of this car, then according to our vedic scripture, in your next life you'll go to back, back to home, back to Godhead."

January 12, 2024!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For people of Odisha, nothing is more important than Lord Jagannath. And this could be seen in my neighborhood when all the residents gathered for welcoming the Srimandira Parikrama Arpana Ratha. We drew rangoli, and prepared offerings of arua chaula (white rice) and gua (betel nut). We had to wait for hours before the chariot could reach us, but it didn't dampen our excitement. Isn't that the whole purpose of special occasions, festivals and rituals? To bring people together, strengthen the community ties and celebrate the life!

LORD JAGANNATH RATH YATRA IN PURI ( ODISHA )
Also known as Car Festival, this spectacular Chariot Festival is celebrated in the month of Asadha, on the second day of the lunar fortnight that falls during June-July. Popularly known as Rath Yatra, this festival is celebrated in the honor of Lord Jagannath who is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
The celebrated Ratha Yatra Festival is said to have started in the time of Svarochisha Manu of the second manvantara and is predicted to continue until the end of the second half of Lord Brahma's lifetime.
Even in the Valmiki Ramayana, it is mentioned that when Lord Rama was getting ready to leave this world, he told Vibhishan, Ravana's younger brother, to worship Lord Jagannatha, the Lord of the Iksvaku dynasty in His absence.
The Skanda Purana also fixes the date of the Ratha Yatra as the second day of the bright fortnight if the month of Ashadha, a day called Pushyami Nakshatra by astrological calculations.
The Padma Purana describes that in Purushottama-Kshetra, or Jagannatha Puri, the supremely blissful Personality of Godhead pretends to be made of wood. In this way, although the Lord takes on what appears to be a material form, it is completely spiritual by the causeless mercy of the Lord for the conditioned souls who cannot perceive the transcendental domain of His.
On the day of the festival, the wooden idols of Krishna, Balrama and Subhadra are taken out in procession in three chariots to their summer temple for a week.
The main chariot is 14 meters high and 10 meters square with 16 wheels. The actual construction of the carts begins two months before the festival day, on the third day of the bright fortnight of Vaisakha.
More than 600 trees, or 400 cubic meters of wood, are needed for the construction, taken from the local forests, along the banks of the Mahanadi River.
Using the same simple tools and procedures as they have for the past hundreds of years, once the basic elements are made, such as the wheels, the actual construction begins only a few weeks before the festival.
The ropes of the huge chariots are pulled by millions of devotees. In the ancient times, devotees would occasionally throw themselves in front of the chariot of Sri Jagananath, for it was believed that to be crushed to death under its sixteen wheels was to go straight to heaven.
Since Sri Jagannath is a form of Vishnu and Sri Krishna, many of the rituals observed in Puri temple are associated with events in the life of Sri Krishna. Thus, this annual Car Festival represents Sri Krishna's Journey from Gokul to Mathura.

Why is Lord Krishna called Lord Jagannath?
Lord Krishna is known by many names in Hinduism, and one of them is Lord Jagannath. The name Jagannath is a combination of two words, "Jagat" and "Nath." Jagat means the universe or the world, and Nath means Lord or Master. Therefore, Lord Jagannath is the Lord and Master of the universe.

The main reason why Lord Krishna is known as Lord Jagannath is because of the famous Jagannath Puri Temple located in the eastern Indian state of Odisha. The temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, who is worshipped along with his siblings, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Jagannath is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Krishna, and the Jagannath Puri Temple is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites for devotees of Lord Krishna.
Legend has it that Lord Jagannath appeared in a dream to King Indradyumna, a devotee of Lord Vishnu, and instructed him to build a temple in his honor in Puri. The temple is famous for its annual Rath Yatra or chariot festival, where the deities are taken out in a grand procession on elaborately decorated chariots. The festival attracts millions of devotees from all over the world.
In summary, Lord Krishna is called Lord Jagannath because of his association with the Jagannath Puri Temple, where he is worshipped as the Lord and Master of the universe.
