Movie: Imitation of Life (1959)
While hosting a dinner party in her home, glamourous Broadway star, Lora Meredith (Lana Turner), wears a beautiful white strapless dress with a green sash wrapped across the bodice and over one shoulder. It is accentuated with a dramatic Laykin et Cie emerald necklace set in platinum with matching earrings.
To appeal to the female audience at the time, the story was altered so that Lora is a Broadway actress so that Lana can model an array of stunning costumes and jewelry. In fact, she wears a $78k wardrobe all especially designed by Jean Louis.
The movie is also one of the first films to have a commercial tie-in with a jewelry company, and Laykin et Cie supplied all of the lavish pieces featured in the movie - $1m worth of costume jewelry.

Unveiling a piece of history, this charming necklace and earring set, provided by jeweler Laykin et Cie, was worn twice in 1959. It made its first appearance on the iconic Lana Turner as Lora Meredith in 𝑰𝒎𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝑳𝒊𝒇𝒆 and then graced the lovely Doris Day as Jan Morrow in the classic film 𝑷𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒐𝒘 𝑻𝒂𝒍𝒌. By "roles" I mean playing a different character, and in a different piece of media; someone playing one character across a franchise only counts as one thing for the purposes of this poll, as does playing multiple characters in one franchise/piece of media
Below are some of this actor's roles. Please only check after voting!
Peyton Place as Constance McKenzie (Oscar nomination)
The Postman Always Rings Twice as Cora Smith
Imitation of Life 1959 as Lora Meredith

Just some LEPacy housekeeping.
I finalized my new sims aspiration spreadsheet and took a week or two to update *everyone* in the LEPacy hood to their new aspirations, which also helped me iron out a few kinks in the spreadsheet, so that was good. I've also decided to rename a handful of families, making it easier to differentiate between different branches and for tagging purposes (I've already applied new tags to previous posts).
The Pinella Family (Ari) ⇢ The Favor Family. Ari married townie, Oliver, and I don't know what his last name used to be, so I picked a new one.
The Drummond Family (Evie) ⇢ The Caliente Family. Melody has moved out and Grey has passed, so it's more like Evie is living with her daughter's family than her daughter's family is living with her.
The Drummond Family (Graham) / The Drummond Family (Milly) ⇢ The Co-Op Family. Unless Milly and Major get married & move out, at which point they'll become The Mccown Family. If Wilma and Graham get married & move out, then they'll become the official Drummond Family.
The Zimmerman Family (Neena) ⇢ The Lawson Family. Neena will take her dad's first name as her last name to reduce the number of Zimmerman families there are.
The Marchand Family (Xavier) ⇢ The Morphon Family. Xavier will take Lora's name to reduce the number of Marchand families.
The Marchand Family (Peter) ⇢ The Avant Family. I have no idea what Elroy's surname used to be, so I chose one for them.
The Zimmerman Family (Chloe) ⇢ The Russell Family. I don't remember what Dahlia's surname was, so I picked a new one.
The Darling Family (Nicholas, Meredith, Brian, Noriko) ⇢ The Marchand Family. I have no idea where they picked up the Darling surname as Nicholas is a Marchand and Meredith is a Zimmerman, and there's no evidence in their memories of either marrying a Darling before each other, so they'll become the "main" Marchand branch. And while I'm changing names, I'm changing Noriko to Nora.
I've played the founding Pinella household, and university, so I'll be setting up the queue for those soon :)

After Campus Reform reported on both hers and Schalk’s tweets calling Pence a “racist f**king piece of s**t” and a “scumbag lying sonofab***h,” Burnett accused Campus Reform of exposing these tweets due to them being “women, and we both work for public institutions.” “This will blow over for our institution because there will be a fresh, coordinated campaign of outrage targeting somebody else," Burnett said.
UW-Madison Professor Sami Schalk expressed frustration that "progressive professors" are blamed for "destroying the country."
Immediately after, she said their goal as professors is to "change" students. “I mean, I think it’s ironic, right? that you send your kid to college and they come home with these new ideas as if education is a thing that changes people. Like yes, of course, that’s what we want to do," Schalk said. Later in the discussion, Schalk admitted that UW-Madison’s spokeswoman, Meredith Mcglone, messages her when Campus Reform sends media inquiries and added that the IT department scrubs information from their websites when the school is contacted. “Meredith Mcglone, who's one of the communications folks like she just has my cell phone number, and she'll text me and be like, Oop! Campus Reform emailed me about you again today -- like just a heads up,’ and then we have a plan... The IT folks know how to handle it when we need to remove all my information from the websites for a little while," Schalk said. Jonathan Friedman, the director of free expression and education for PEN America, sided with the professors over the controversy, stating that universities should "do the right thing to stand up for faculty unequivocally." After defending the current state of academia, Burnett said that Campus Reform “brought us together” for the meeting. “In terms of the particular outlet that has brought us together today, Campus Reform. This is an outlet that grows out of a conservative effort to discredit and defund higher education,” Burnett said. She then made light of "right-wing" students who feel "disrespected" for their views. “Campus Reform didn’t come up because some poor, you know, right-wing students felt disrespected. You know, it is a top-down heavily funded, disinformation organization and for a bunch of people who cry about cancel-culture and political correctness, they spend an awful lot of time trying to get people canceled for their free speech," Burnett said. Friedman followed these comments by insisting that there is a "parallel" to the "organized nature" on the right. “The organized nature of it also, which doesn't exactly really doesn't have a parallel on the other side of the political spectrum currently, not that there aren't actors there. But the in terms of its organization in terms of its funding, it doesn't," Friedman said. Burnett then took aim at Campus Reform correspondent Haley Worth, saying, “Believe me, I know way more about [Haley] than she knows about me.” At the end of the Zoom call, Schalk chimed in on Burnett’s comments regarding Worth, saying they need to “give them a taste of their own medicine.” “Haley Worth, I don’t like her. I don’t like that little girl. So I’m gonna go ahead and say that publicly, because she is creating harassment for me and she knows it. So yes, the journalists that are journalists in scare quotes that are participating in this, absolutely, and if I do have someone who is dumb enough to send me an email from their actual account with their actual name, dumb, brave, whatever, um yeah, I will go ahead and make that real public too because I would love for people to have their, like, family and friends know the kind of things they are saying to me… Give them a taste of their own medicine," Schalk said.

Lana Turner and Juanita Moore in Imitation of Life (Douglas Sirk, 1959)
Cast: Lana Turner, Juanita Moore, John Gavin, Susan Kohner, Sandra Dee, Robert Alda, Dan O'Herlihy, Karin Dicker, Terry Burnham, Troy Donahue, Mahalia Jackson. Screenplay: Eleanore Griffin, Allan Scott, based on a novel by Fannie Hurst. Cinematography: Russell Metty. Art direction: Alexander Golitzen, Richard H. Riedel. Film editing: Milton Carruth. Music: Frank Skinner.
John Gavin was Hollywood's ultimate decorative male, there to look good in bed with Janet Leigh in Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock, 1960) but otherwise to play no significant role in the film. (When he shows up later with Vera Miles, playing Leigh's sister, to find out what happened to Marion Crane, she's the one who does all the work, including the discovery of the mummified Mrs. Bates in the cellar.) It's no surprise that when Gavin died a few years ago, several of the obituaries mentioned the scene in Thoroughly Modern Millie (George Roy Hill, 1967) in which his character is paralyzed by a poison dart: He's been presented as so handsomely wooden that it takes a long time before anyone notices he's just sitting there. He's not quite so inert in Imitation of Life, but that's because Douglas Sirk, like Hitchcock, knew how to make use of him: He's there to hang as nicely on Lana Turner's arm as the Jean Louis gowns do on her body. Unfortunately, this makes for some of the film's weaker scenes, the ones in which Sandra Dee's Susie develops a crush on him, but even there the fault is more Dee's limitations as an actress than Gavin's as an actor. He comes off much better in one of the key scenes, in which his Steve Archer proposes to Turner's Lora Meredith. It works because Turner is skillful enough to make Lora into a woman who knows how not to get trapped by male expectations of what women should be. It's not quite so well-played as the scene in Now, Voyager (Irving Rapper, 1942) I wrote about a couple of days ago, in which Charlotte Vale rebuffs Jerry Durrance's suggestion that she should be looking for a man instead of taking care of his daughter, but that's because Lana Turner wasn't Bette Davis. Still, the scene comes off, and it's reinforced later when Lora is the one who proposes to Steve, after she's gotten what she wanted. The film belongs, of course, to the women, not only Turner but also and especially to Juanita Moore and Susan Kohner, who got the Oscar nominations they deserved. It's possible to fault the film for "whitewashing" by casting Kohner as the Black girl who tries to pass for white, especially since in the earlier version of Imitation of Life (John M. Stahl, 1934), the corresponding character was played by Fredi Washington, who was indeed Black. But even to raise the issue of "passing" in 1959, especially in a film that some considered little more than soap opera, was audacious: The Production Code had long forbidden any treatment of miscegenation. And Sirk artfully turns the issue into a generational one: Sarah Jane's desire to be white as a reaction against the subservience of her mother, foreshadowing a generation gap that would be operative in the coming decade's civil rights struggle. Sirk's films have a way of working themselves into your head unexpectedly, putting the lie to my observation that drama makes you think and melodrama makes you feel. Sirk's melodrama -- Imitation of Life is unashamed of the clichés it exploits and usually transcends -- undoubtedly makes you feel. Is there ever a dry eye at showings of the film's funeral finale? But by confronting the problems that underlie the melodrama it also has a sneaky way of making you think.

Hmm OK I wanted to ask about this certain flavour of fantasy genre. Do you have any books where like classic fantasy creatures are living in society side by side and pulling integrated. Like say the fae sell Coffe with a shot of confidence to help calm urself kinda vibe kinda book?
You know what, I think I do have some soft sci-fi/fantasy/urban fantasy for ya! I know a lot of graphic novels and webcomics that fit the bill, but not too many prose books. Some of these are for younger audiences, too, which has never prevented me from reading anything and if you don't think "kid books" are for everyone then you're wrong and have a nice day.
I follow a webcomic on Webtoons - Crumbs by Whitherling (now complete!)- and it is exactly what you're looking for. A legit magical bakery that serves emotion-flavored treats, witches and magic people, beautiful soft art, and a story about finding yourself and who you want to be. A complete heart-warmer.
The first prose book that came to mind is The Cybernetic Teashop by Meredith Katz. It's a sweet ace romance between a Latina protagonist and a sapient robot. It's not quite cozy teashop vibes as it has some heavy looking stakes, but it looks super good and has been on my to-read list for a while now.
Magic to Brew by Grace Ellis, Shae Beagle, Kate Leth (Illustrator), Caitlin Quirk (Illustrator), Clayton Cowles (Illustrator) - a graphic novel
Werewolf barista Julie and her new girlfriend go on a date to a close-up magic show, but all heck breaks loose when the magician casts a horrible spell on their friend Chet. Now it's up to the team of mythical pals to stop the illicit illusionist before it's too late. - Goodreads
The Tea Dragon Society by Katie O'Neill - dragons that make tea and how to take care of them. I can't think of anything cuter than that. Seriously, what are you waiting for?
Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker, Wendy Xu (Artist), Joamette Gil (Letterer) - I love Wendy so much and this book looks so sweet.
Snapdragon by Kat Leyh - another graphic novel about a witch and magic and wholesome vibes.
Snap’s town had a witch.
At least, that’s how the rumor goes. But in reality, Jacks is just a Crocs-wearing, internet-savvy old lady who sells roadkill skeletons online. It’s creepy, sure, but Snap thinks it's kind of cool, too.
Snap needs a favor from this old woman, though, so she begins helping Jacks with her strange work. Snap gets to know her and realizes that Jacks may in fact have real magic—and an unlikely connection to Snap’s family’s past. - Goodreads
Séance Tea Party by Reimena Yee - people on Goodreads say this one will make you cry, but in a good way.
After watching her circle of friends seemingly fade away, Lora is determined to still have fun on her own, so when a tea party leads Lora to discovering Alexa, the ghost that haunts her house, they soon become best friends. - Goodreads
Anything by Molly Ostertag. She has a new release, The Girl from the Sea, which is a sweet selkie romance about growing up queer and being who you are - in Canada!
Personally, I had feel-good vibes when reading The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. There's some violent and kinda spooky scary stuff in it, but I like those kind of softer ghosty feels.
If you're into podcasts, I'd recommend Love and Luck. It's super queer, Australian, full of love, and so, so sweet and healing.
Australia's first LGBT audio drama, Love and Luck is a fictional radio play podcast, told via voicemails. It’s a slice of life queer romance story with a touch of magic.
The story is about two men who fall in love, learn they have magic powers, and use those powers to support and protect their community. The good guys win, no one gets killed, and queer people of all types are all loved and valued.

The main character in the film, Lora Meredith, reminds me a lot of the actress Marilyn Monroe. Lora was an aspiring actress who wished to reach the big screen, and has a chance encounter with Annie, a black widow who ends up living with Lora and becoming the caretaker of their home. Given the circumstances and the time period of the film, it is surprising that a white woman showed empathy for a black woman and even developed a close friendship.
I think it is fair to say Lora Meredith was ahead of her time, as was Marilyn Monroe. Ella Fitzgerald herself comments years later for an August 1972 issue of the MS magazine, “I owe Marilyn Monroe a real debt… she personally called the owner of the Mocambo and told him she wanted me booked immediately, and if he would do it, she would take a front table every night. She told him — and it was true, due to Marilyn’s superstar status — that the press would go wild.” She continues, “The owner said yes, and Marilyn was there, front table, every night. The press went overboard. After that, I never had to play a small jazz club again. She was an unusual woman — a little ahead of her times. And she didn’t know it.”
