2022 Horror Challenge: [43/?]
↳ "Everything that makes somebody who they are... I take it." Lifechanger (2018) dir. Justin McConnell
Plot: A murderous shapeshifter sets out on a blood-soaked mission to make things right with the woman he loves.
Starring: Lora Burke, Jack Foley, Elitsa Bako, Sam James White, Steve Kasan, Bill Oberst Jr. & Rachel Vanduzer
This is an odd little movie that I had been wanting to watch for a little bit just because the concept sounded pretty cool to me. And it still was when watching because we got to actually see this main character change their face multiple times and each performer was good imo. It’s definitely not what you’d think of a traditional horror movie during most of it since it’s not going for actual scares necessarily as much as it’s trying to make the audience think. Which is cool. The ending is certainly something. I appreciated the practical effects that are in this. Idk I still have to gather my thoughts around it. I do think it still was an interesting watch but Idk if I loved it like I was hoping to. Hmm. It felt worth checking out though.

MOTHERLY - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: The Horror Collective
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: Kate is a single mother. Along with her daughter Beth, they are under the watchful eye of Hal, a local constable, as part of relocation due to her husband’s murder conviction. Trying to create a sense of normalcy for Beth by celebrating her birthday, their night is shattered when a vengeful couple takes them hostage because they believe Kate is the person responsible for their daughter's murder.
REVIEW: MOTHERLY is a dark and twisted thriller with a kernel of a “who done it” at its core. It features a mixed bag of talent in front of the camera that is unable to contain the ultimate reveal of the film.
Although the film is titled MOTHERLY, the story is set in motion by the consequences of the parent’s actions. The viewer comes into the story were Kate and Beth, mother and daughter, are struggling in protective custody in what seems to be a sort time after the father’s conviction for the murder of one of Beth’s friends. Initially, Kate is presented as an overprotective mother. Even though the “murder” is behind bars Kate still seems to perceive a threat to her and Beth. There is tension between Kate and Beth, and although Beth is angry and comes across as the alpha in this dynamic. As the story evolves more characters are introduced and a bit more of the story is revealed. The screenplay attempts to inject another red herring but in doing so I became reassured as to the film’s final outcome. I had issues with the character of Hal. I’m going to guess he is a detective simply because he wasn’t wearing a uniform and drove an unmarked car. There wasn’t anything in the writing that gave the character any fortitude or gravitas that you would expect from an officer of the law. He seems wimpy and later when he has a change of perspective it, and the dialogue, seems out of his nature and lacks any gravitas. There is an element to the narrative that reminds of a staged drama like Ira Levin’s “Deathtrap” or a stage adaptation of an Agatha Christie story. The screenwriters, Craig David Wallace and Ian Malone, try to blend a couple of genres but the plot reveals itself to the viewer much sooner than intended.
As a director, Craig David Wallace delivers a well produced film. It has a nice location. The set is a bit sparse, but it is supposed to be a safehouse that they will only be at for a short time. The cinematography was good, the framing composition was solid, and even though I wouldn’t say there was an artistic quality to the film that added anything in terms of mystery or suspense, it is still rather engaging. Being an independent film, I was impressed that Craig David Wallace was able to get a lot of visual bang for his budget.
I thought the majority of the cast was rather effective. Actress Lora Burke was wonderful as an emotionally frayed mother. Kristen MacCulloch and Nick Smyth create this emotionally complex and dysfunctional, grieving couple of the murdered child. Hal the cop is played by actor Colin Paradine. I’m not sure if it was the script, the direction, or a combination of both, but I did not feel the character gel. It was lacking something and wasn’t believable. The 13 year old Canadian actress Tessa Kozma delivers a memorable performance as Beth. She brings an intensity and depth to the character that feels genuine and is effective.
MOTHERLY is not a great film, but it's not a bad film. There are many quality elements to it that make it worth watching. The screenplay does suffer from a bit of hubris as it attempts to weave together genres and plot elements to confuse the viewer and hide the big reveal. Unfortunately, the plot ends up with a few tells and reveals its hand too early in the game. It lacks a bit of finesse or style, and is a bit flat footed, which ultimately allows the viewer to deduce the dark secret at the core of this thriller.
