Where'd the raven's beak go?

SCP-049 stirred from his slumber, the familiar scent of his cell filling his nostrils. He blinked once, twice—something felt different. Instinctively, his hand flew to his face. But instead of his mask’s cold, comforting ceramic, his fingers brushed over... flesh?

Panic seized him.

The Plague Doctor scrambled to his feet and rushed to the mirror affixed to his cell’s wall. Staring back at him was not the beak that had defined him for centuries, but a mouth. A human mouth. His dark eyes widened in disbelief.

“What… is this?” His voice came out softer, warmer, lacking the usual hollow echo. He bared his teeth at the mirror, moving his lips in a way he hadn't in centuries. His mind raced—had the pestilence done this to him? Was this a new kind of mutation, or some experiment the Foundation subjected him to?

He clenched his fists, anger simmering beneath the surface. Without his mask, without his beak, he felt... exposed. Vulnerable. But there was also a strange curiosity. He touched his lips again, experimentally parting them.

Reid. Where's Reid? What if she sees me like this?

The thought of her seeing him like this stirred a wave of emotion. Would she still look at him the same way? Would her fingers still trace his jaw, now that it was bare, exposed to the world? He touched his lips again, imagining her doing the same.

A thought lingered, unexpected but insistent: he wondered how it would feel, to kiss her. to have his tongue on her. It was a notion he had dismissed before, the mask making such thoughts irrelevant. But now? The idea hung in his mind, both unsettling and intriguing.

He straightened, pushing the thoughts aside, though the traces of them remained like a whisper in the back of his mind. He had a mission—to cleanse the world of the pestilence. But there was a part of him, the part that had been buried beneath the mask for so long, that now wondered if perhaps, just for a moment, he could indulge in the humanity he had long forsaken.

Got really curious, what if he just straight up lost his beak lmao- so yeah my fingers acted on their own. And of course, it's me, mirage, so I had to add a tiny bit of filth.

Every few weeks I'll randomly remember that Nikolai's demon/shadow/idk form (little shadow monster guy I love him) bit Zoya and Nikolai said it was affectionate :)

THAT'S SO SILLY it's/he's so silly and underrated

Can't remember if it's still there after the end of RoW but if it is, I hc that it is a heavy influence on Nikolai's obsession with Zoya's hair and when she wears bows/ribbons :D

This is incoherent but um I thought you'd like the Zoyalai rambles as the biggest Zoyalai shipper I know haha

(also I think Zoya has a little collection of the same ribbon by now, because Nikolai keeps stealing them, especially when they are to be on separate places. He denies it (half-heartedly))
