Lonnie Liston Smith – Love Is The Answer

Lonnie Liston Smith entered the 1980s with Love Is the Answer, which is quite similar to previous Columbia efforts like Exotic Mysteries and Song for the Children. Jazz’s hard-liners continued to call Smith a sellout; as they saw it, a musician who was talented enough to have been employed by the likes of Pharoah Sanders, Betty Carter, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk had no business becoming more commercial and catering to the quiet storm audience. But while Love Is the Answer isn’t as challenging as Smith’s work with Kirk and Sanders and isn’t in a class with such Flying Dutchman gems as Astral Traveling and Expansions, it isn’t a bad album either (Alex Henderson/AllMusic).

StanleyTurrentine "Sugar" 1970年11月、Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs録音、 #CTIRecords レーベル。 Engineer - #RudyVanGelder Producer - #CreedTaylor #StanleyTurrentine (ts) #FreddieHubbard (tp) #GeorgeBenson (g) #RonCarter (b) #LonnieListonSmith (el-p) #ButchCornell (or) #BillyKaye (ds) #RichardPabloLandrum (co) ソウル・ジャズ系サックス奏者のトップで豪放なテナー・マン、スタンリー・タレンタインに、フレディ・ハバード、ジョージ・ベンソン、ロン・カーターならば聴かずにスルー���出来ませんね。 なおかつ期待しないはずのない、#VanGelderStudio 、Creed TaylorのCTIレーベルです。70年代のRVGの音はどうでしょうか。▲Jazz beginner's personal challenge No.49。と思いつつ、針を落としてすぐ、何処かで聴いた音... そう、以前に紹介した1971年4,7月録音の"Salt Song"です。考えてみれば、同じVan Gelder Studio でCreed TaylorのCTIレーベル。改めて、"Salt Song"も聴いてしまいました。 伸びやかで軽やか、透明感ある音色。勿論、時代的に電気楽器が随所に起用されてはいるものの、楽曲はタイトル曲はブラジリアン音楽だし、バラエティーに富んでいますが、曲調は明らかにジャズだし、演奏はムーディーな彼らしさをしっかり押さえたものです。 Blue Note時代のRVGの音とは明らかに違いますが、RVGの管楽器重視の録音は変わらず、タレンタインの男らしい太っといムーディーで臭めのテナーが炸裂。そこは1970年代でもRVGの音ですが、高めの音圧で高音域の音圧は抑え気味、小音でも個々の楽器の音はしっかりしています。ダイナミック・レンジが広く、非常にクリアで力強い点が進化していると思う。録音器材のお陰かも知れないですね。 ただし、好みかと言えば、やっ��り私はオーソドックスなモダン・ジャズの方が心に響くなぁ。 彼も1970年代に入るとFusion路線に転向、長らく在籍したBluenoteを離れCTI Recordsへ移籍、その第一作が本作です。 CTIの作品はイージー・リスニング・ジャズとも言われる聴きやすい大衆的なジャズからフュージョンの走りでもあったクロスオーバーなどが制作されましたが、本作はそうではなくストレート・アヘッドなファンキーで豪快な作品。当時ジャズがどんどんクロスオーバー化していく中で、王道のハード・バップに近い本作は逆に新鮮でもあり大ヒットしたらしいです。 あまり小細工しない、パワフルさと柔らかさがバランス良く共存するタレンタインのテナー、私は大好きです。 ｢新主流派｣ながらもハード・バップなフレディ・ハバードとロン・カーターも抜群の相性。この豪華な布陣によるコテコテ過ぎない、ほどよく濃く、腹八分目の黒さが心地良い。これがCreed Taylorの目指す新星CTIレーベルの方向性なのかも知れないです。 足の指をペロリと舐めている女性の横顔の秀逸で斬新なジャケット・デザインは、ソウルのレコジャケっぽくドキッとしますが、中身はと言うとジャケットから連想されるほどのコテコテさはなく、比較的あっさりした軽めの印象だと思います。 #jazz #fuzey #vinyl #jazzvinyl #vinylcollection #jazzrecords #ジャズ #スイングジャーナル ※作品を知り、ジャズの素晴らしさを伝えたい。様々なソースをアレンジ、先輩諸氏に感謝。 https://www.instagram.com/p/BtXcjSqnL2W/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1eo5y67ldecly
