The Grim Reaper's Daughter
Chapter 1- Always the same
Amy stared at the photos on the mantel. Her mother and father the day they got married, the day they had her, their first date. It was still hard to know her mother was dead. The day her dad came home and said she died in a car crash changed her whole life. Amy had been ten at the time, she had asked where mum had gone.
“She’s gone to Heaven,” her dad had answered quietly
It had pleased her at the time, but now. How did her dad know? And where had he been that day? He hadn’t had work; he should have been home. She turned away; she couldn’t look at them anymore, not with these thoughts.
“Amy! I’m home!”
The voice made her jump. She turned as her father came into the living room. He had his tattered, dirty, hooded cloak on, he always wore it when he went out. She didn’t know what he did for a living, but he never got much money.
“Hello Father,” she murmured. She was confused, she hadn’t heard him come home.
“Hey sweetheart, how was school?” her father asked sitting on the dusty push sofa.
“It was alright. I got a B in Maths,” Amy murmured bringing her arms around her, she had done well this year.
“Nice way to wrap up grade ten, isn’t it?” her father asked smiling.
Her father had light brown skin and brown eyes, he had medium length hair, the colour of oil, but he had a friendly face that lit up when he smiled.
Amy nodded, “I made dinner, just noddles, there’s some in the fridge for you.” She said meeting his eyes and giving a small smile.
Her father beamed, “that sounds good, love! Can’t wait to try it! Did you want to play a board game this evening?” he asked.
Amy nodded, finally! Some quality time together.
Grim went to the cupboard, they didn’t have much of a choice. “How about chess?” he asked.
“Sure, why not?” Amy replied.
Grim got the board game down and placed it on the coffee table, it had been a long time since he had played with his daughter. Too long.
“Why don’t you set it out while I get my dinner?” he asked, Amy nodded.
Grim walked down the small hallway to the dingy kitchen. The kitchen only had room for a small stove, a fridge, and a small counter with a small island. They had had to move after Lilly's death, being the Grim Reaper didn’t pay well. He had kept his job a secret from his daughter, but Lilly had known since they met. She had promised to keep the secret, even when they had Amy.
He opened the fridge door, banishing these thoughts from his mind. There was a small bowl of noddles waiting for him, he got it out and headed back to the living room.
Amy put the last piece on the chess board, she hadn’t played chess in ages.
“Did I get I all right?” she asked as her father came in.
“Yep, well done,” he approved as he sat down.
Amy made the first move just as a loud ringing sounded, Amy looked at her father. It was his phone.
“Sorry sweetheart,” her dad murmured, “it’s the boss.”
Amy sighed, whenever her father’s boss called, he always had to leave, hence he was hardly ever home long.
“The boss has called me in, sorry love, maybe another night,” he sounded as disappointed as she felt. Amy wondered what kind of job called their workers in at the stroke of midnight.
“Do you have to go?” she asked watching him get from the moth-eaten sofa.
“Yes, I’m so sorry,” he answered pulling his cloak on and looking at her sadly.
“But your hardly ever home...”
“I know, but it can’t be helped,”
“You could say you’re sick?”
“He would know that I’m lying,” the had reached the main bedroom door. Amy sighed and gave up. It was always the same, they never got to spend time together.
“I’m going to bed; will I see you tomorrow?” she asked.
“I should be home, I might be asleep on the sofa, but I might be out with friends, it’s my day off... I promised,” her father answered apologetically.
Amy just nodded and headed back to her bedroom. She heard her father call good night but didn’t respond. She felt hurt and thought, when her father was out, she would look though his stuff. She might find out what he did for a living, he wouldn’t like it, but at least she would know.

The Grim Reaper's Daughter
This is a book I was writing and I thought I would share the first chapter. Now if i continue to post this story I want to warn anyone with religious beliefs that this story might offend your beliefs, so read with care.
Chapter 1- Always the same

Hetaveyond 1795: Memories in Frost- Synne (Nyo!Norway as Iya Tiki)
Levi’s Aveyond 2 x Hetalia mod is still up, but I don’t feel like using her cast anymore - too many overlaps with her Aveyond 4 roster. (I know the AV2 mod came first but the boys are just too iconic, y’know…)
So while Lukey is still on break, here is the story of Synne, heroine of Hetaveyond 1795: Memories in Frost, as well as her predecessors.
💔 Sunniva Lillefugl, the Forgotten Girl (1779-1795)
Sunniva was born into a family of singers, yet she couldn’t seem to pass her village’s annual singing exam, even after five tries. Her neighbors mocked her. Her guardians abused her. Even her little sister Emy, who passed on her first try, laughed at her.
The only elves in the entirety of Valer who never joined in the bullying? Her childhood friend, Mathilde “Mette” Ietrai, and her cousin(s?), Siv (and Kristan?) Ryeva. Ever since her first attempt, they had been the ones encouraging her, telling her to never give up on her dreams. But it had been four more years and four more unsuccessful tries… even she was not sure whether they truly mean well, or they’re just clinging on to false hope, as she had been.
The day after her fifth and final try, Sunniva locked herself away in her bedroom, far from all the mocking and insults. The same night, she would vanish completely, leaving behind snow on an island that had only seen sunlight and green... strange.
❄️ Eva, the Frost Princess (1795)
The Snow Queen of Bylemisto, Yekaterina, adopted a fair maiden from the land of the elves. Eva was her name, and sixteen was her age. Besides her perfect looks, she is dignified and loyal towards her mother - a proper example for all good Bylemistans to follow.
On the day of Eva’s presentation, men pushed against each other for one good glance of the princess. Women, both married and single, wept in envy of her beauty. Children talked about her beautiful dress and floral headpiece. Even in another life, she remained the center of attention - except this time, she was loving it.
But as much is Eva loved by her people, nothing the Frost Princess did or said could touch her mother’s frozen heart. When Mathilde revealed to her the true reason the Snow Queen kept her, she ran away from the palace, leaving behind in her room two unconscious guards.
🎶 Synne, the Melodic Sorceress (1795-present)
Diadema was surprised to learn that such a rare branch of sorcery, which was long thought to have been lost… survives within a child from a secluded elven settlement. Completely reliant on her voice to cast spells, she has no need of a physical medium, like an orb staff. In olden times, sorcerers like her were called Songbirds. They are known to learn through sensory experience, notably by memorizing tunes played by exclusive artifacts known as Melody Pearls.
The Prophet has no clue why Photia would choose this elf—one from a land far away from human civilization, no less—to become mankind’s next hero. Well, it doesn’t really matter, for her only job was to help her through this strange journey. The Pearl of Nature she gave the chosen girl, and she tasked the elven pair with two simple missions - to seek the blessings of her daughters, the Six Nymphs of Virtue, and to unite the two largest nations of Celinia, Einlon and Aimore, against Bylemisto.
But what shall she call herself now? She rejects the name Sunniva, for it belonged to a disgraced village girl who died in her sleep. She could not call herself Eva, for the Prince of Einlon has an enemy by that name. So, after a moment of consideration, the girl decided from that point on, she would be referred to as simply… Synne. (Pronounced SIN-nuh)
[BONUS] Synne’s Final Outfit: Designed by Erika, Nymph of Hope
By collecting several blessings and becoming a full-fledged Songbird, Synne has demonstrated great courage and diligence. To reward her, Erika gathered her people to make the elf a new dress.
“If you’re going to defeat someone as big and strong as the Snow Queen, you better do it… with style!”
Oh, this is also what she’s wearing to future appearances on this blog, by the way.
— Makoto S.

Long island medium daughter dies
Long island medium daughter dies update#
Oftentimes, when a soul comes forward, it will apologize for their actions when they were alive. It's a feeling or energy, and Caputo said she'll often physically experience how they died, such as shortness of breath or pain in a certain part of her body.Ĭaputo said she's never had an angry spirit before she began doing readings, she asked God, "if this is my soul's journey," then she only wants to channel positive information that will help someone. When she's in contact with the dead, Caputo said, she doesn't see or hear them. “How in the world would I know that?" Caputo said. More: WOW To Do List: See the Ben Allen Band and moreĬaputo pointed to one mother who had died from COVID that she was channeling. During a reading with the woman's daughter, the deceased conveyed to Caputo that a nurse came into her room and the woman told the nurse how her daughter had just called, and they had a conversation and discussed a favorite song. “I have a greater respect for the frontline workers and I always had such respect," she said. Yet in readings, she found that people who died were not alone because nurses and other health-care workers were by their side, Caputo said. 11, 2001, many in the past year didn't know what the final moments were like for family members and friends who died from COVID-19. “I find it interesting how, in the same way, people died that day and didn’t know what happened to their loved ones," she said. And with the pandemic, people are struggling with the unexpected loss people they cherish, Caputo said. They got married last May, shortly after buying their first home together. She began her spiritual readings about the time 9/11 happened nearly 20 years ago. The couple got engaged in 2019 after two years of dating. They were also holding a scone to match a slice of pizza – a nod to her husband’s profession – to announce the news. Victoria and Michael revealed she was pregnant in a summer social media post featuring sweet moments of the pair in black t-shirts with pizza on them. We could have a mini on hand!” PREGNANCY RECOVERY “And all along, I thought she looked like me until this ultrasound. She told her followers: “In about 5 weeks my baby monkey will be here! Who'd like some good old fashioned name analysis?
Okay, so, I been doing so much research for Resident Evil stuff and learning shit about fairy tales and timelines and genome editing and searching for impossible Romanian poetry I got overwhelmed and went, fuck it. Why not just look at their names? Maybe I'll learn something there.
So, here I have done it. Name meanings for characters of the Mold Saga so far aka 7 and 8 aka Biohazard and Village.
(Sorry I'm on mobile I'll put a cut here when I can)
Ethan: Firm, enduring, strong, impetuous, long-lived. An incredibly consistently common and popular name. E name just like Eveline, so could be a successor of sorts to the mold.
Mia: Derivative of numerous other names of many possibilities. Mia as a word means “mine” in Italian and Spanish. Mamma Mia is a well known Italian phrase, particularly due to the ABBA song and musical of the same name, and it being the catchphrase of the Nintendo character Mario. The phrase means “my mom”.
Winters: First and last season of the year where everything becomes dormant and cold and either dies or sleeps.
Eveline: Contains “Eve”, as in both the biblical first woman. Also means a night before an event, and the game takes place in the span of one night. The name Eve means “ life”, “living one”, “mother of life”, or “giver of life”. Another possible name origin is as a variant of Aveline, which is a diminutive of Ava, which is the same pronunciation as the name Eva as pronounced in Village.
Baker: Occupational surname. In older times consider an upper-middle class job, much like the family. Also adds the emphasis of the “food” and also how they essentially make more molded.
Jack: God is gracious, supplanter. A nickname for John and other related names, but also a name in itself. It is also a word with a couple meanings, including a heavy lifting tool, to steal something, to take control of something, or an everyman.
Margueritte: Pearl. French name for ox-eyed daisy. Derived from Margaret. Sounds like maggot.
Lucas: Light. Derived from Lucius which means “the bright one” or “the one born at dawn”. Luke is also an Apostle of Jesus and was a physician.
Zoe: Life. Came from the name Eve. Fitting as Zoe was practically pushed out of the family after Eveline’s arrival, replaced as the daughter of the family.
Joe: He will add. Was added as DLC. Short for Joseph. Joseph is the name of multiple biblical figures. One is a child of Jacob and Rachel and Jacob’s favorite son in Genesis (note: Jack is a nickname for Jacob) who was sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, but rose to become vizier, the most powerful position nest to the Pharoah, and forgave his family and brought them to Egypt. One is the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus, who loved and raised a child he knew was not his against social norms. Another is a disciple known as Joseph of Arimathea who notably took Jesus down from the cross for his burial and testified when he revived and was gone.
Rosemary: Dew of the sea. Combination of Rose and Mary or the plant rosemary. Roses as a plant vary in meaning depending on color. Mary and its variations have many differing meanings, among them being, “beloved”, “love”, “bitter”, “rebellious”, “wished-for child”, and “drop of the sea”. There are also the allusions to Mary, mother of Jesus as she is sometimes worshipped with roses, and you say Hail Marys on your rosary which is only two letters from her name. In regards to the plant, it is relatively resistant to drought and cold, though some breeds are susceptible to frost and they don’t like too much water. They have fibrous roots, so they spread and fan out like we see with the mold. They thrive in more alkaline soils and seem to have been named by a taxonomist named Carl Linnaeus. In stories, folklore, and tradition, the plants or flowers are often used for remembrance, specifically for the dead. It’s also been used as a spice and in medicine.
Miranda: Worthy of admiration. Latin in origin. Character in Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and whether she is a strong female character or not is highly debated, as she frequently defies men like her father, but often when they expect and/or want her to. She is otherwise compassionate and naive. The titular character of a Polish novel in which everyone is a mage and Miranda is a medium connected to another character, Damayanti, who is portrayed as the ideal woman and has a romance with the male protagonist, yet sacrifices her body so her spirit can experience a higher state of consciousness. Miranda can contact her soul, and disappears when she dies. Miranda in the US refers to the required practice by police of reading suspects their rights before interrogation.
Eva: Latin form of “Eve” and meaning “life”, “mother of life”, or “giver of life”.
Duke: A ruler of a duchy. A title bestowed by royalty or passed through family, often given to royalty or nobility, but can be given to anyone. In France, the peerage system was abolished in 1789 (vive la révolution), brought back in 1814, and finally perma-abolished in 1848.
(Note: While the wife of a duke becomes a duchess, the husband of a duchess does not become a duke. At least, from what I gather. This shit is confusing.)
Alcina: Strong-willed. Greek origin. There are two operas using the same story about a sorceress named Alcina who lives on an island with her sister Morgana and seduces every knight who comes to the island, but turns them into plants, animals, or stones when she bores of them. When the source of her power is destroyed, she, her sister, and their palace crumble to dust. The Hungarian name for Alțâna, a commune in Sibiu County, Romania in the historical region of Transylvania.
Bela: Bela Lugosi was an actor who famously portrayed Dracula. His name is Hungarian and meant to be spelled Béla meaning “heart”, “insides”, or “intestines”, roughly translating to “having heart” or “having guts” in modern terminology, as in being brave. However it is considered a male name and as Bela is female there is also the possibility of the influence of the name Bella short an l, Bella an Italian name meaning “beautiful”.
Cassandra: The one who shines and excels over men. Name of a Trojan princess and priestess in Greek mythology. She was given her gift of prophecy by the god Apollo but, in most versions of the tale, he asks for sexual favors in return, and she initially agrees but then rejects him once she’s gotten her gift. In anger he cursed her to always tell true prophecies that no one would believe and was thus thought a madwoman. She served a temple of Athena, goddess of wisdom, handicraft, and warfare. When Cassandra was assaulted and possibly raped in Athena’s temple and dragged out while desperately clinging to Athena’s statue, Athena was so enraged by the damage done to her temple and/or her priestess that she enlisted the help of both Zeus and Poseiden to exact revenge on the Greeks for failing to punish the man who attacked Cassandra and caused the resulting damage. Zeus gave her one of his own bolts of lightning and she struck them down at sea. While Cassandra was never believed, she was always right.
Daniela: God is my judge. Feminine form of Daniel. Daniela is also a genus of moth with only one species in the genus, Daniela viridis. It is also another name for the Italian wine grape Prè blanc.
Dimitrescu: Child of Dimitri. -escu suffixes in Romanian are like -son suffixes in English, it derives from parentage (ex. Jackson is Jack’s son, Dimitrescu is Dimitri’s child). Dimitri means “devoted to Demeter”. Demeter is the Greek goddess of the harvest, agriculture, sacred law (i.e. cycle of life and death), fertility, and the earth. Like many Greek myths, she is repeatedly wronged, and rather severely, by multiple male figures. Demeter in particular is a mother who has her daughter Kore, later known as Persephone, stolen away from her and goes on a rampage searching for her and those responsible.
(Note: Considering the founders had these names it’s a bit dumb seeing as this trend of parentage -escu names supposedly came about mid 19th century (1800s for those who find that confusing cuz I do), long after the Village was founded)
Donna: Lady or lady of the home. Italian name and a title of respect. Derives from the Latin term Dominus. The Romanian form of the word (not the name) is Doamnã. The Atropa belladonna aka deadly nightshade have berries and foliage that contain tropane alkaloids including atropine, scopolamine, and hyoscyamine which are extremely toxic and can cause hallucinations and delirium, but are also used in pharmaceutical anticholinergics. Throughout history people cluelessly used the berry juice as eye drops to cosmetically dilate their pupils, giving them a seductive doll-eyed appearance. Symptoms of belladonna poisoning are dilated pupils, sensitivity to light, blurred vision, tachycardia, loss of balance, staggering, headache, rash, flushing, severely dry mouth and throat, slurred speech, urinary retention, constipation, confusion, hallucinations, delirium, and convulsions. The plant's deadly symptoms are in atropine’s ability to disrupt the parasympathetic nervous system’s involuntary regulation like sweating, breathing, and heartbeat.
Angie: Diminutive of many names containing “angel”. Angels are messengers and warriors of Heaven, a realm souls go after death. Angel statues are also common grave markers. Children are also often told they have guardian angels, a being watching over them to protect them.
Claudia: No sure meaning has been found, but some think it comes from claudus, meaning “lame”, “limping”, or “crippled”, or clausus, which means “shut” or “closed”.
Beneviento: Good wind. Neapolitan spelling of Benevento, the name of both a province and its capital city, located in the Campania region of Italy.
Salvatore: Savior. Italian name. In the movie version (I specify as I have not read the book and the movie synopsis has more on the characters) of The Name of the Rose, the character Salvatore is hunch-backed and twisted, and has a history of not-really-acceptable religious beliefs. He was also tortured and falsely accused of witchcraft. He dies when a library is set on fire.
Moreau: Moorish, dark-skinned. French surname. Titular doctor in The Island of Doctor Moreau, in which said doctor performs disturbing and torturous experiments on people and animals, especially through vivisection, to make beastial humanoid creatures.
Karl: Free man, strong man, manly. Werner Karl Heisenberg was a German theoretical physicist who made notably important contributions to hydrodynamics, ferromagnetism, cosmic rays, and subatomic particles. Karl Marx was a German philosopher, economist, historian, sociologist, political theorist, journalist, and socialist revolutionary who believed societies develop through class conflict, and in a capitalist society this is the “ruling” class (the bosses) having power over the working class. He believed people should have equal footing and should and would inevitably fight for it. Karl Jaspers was a German existentialist philosopher and psychiatrist. His humanist ideals had him dissatisfied with the medical community’s approach to mental health and worked to improve it, and philosophizing on it after.
(IMPORTANT NOTE: Since I’ve seen accusations of the RE character and his influences being so, I feel I must state it here. Karl Heisenberg is NOT a Nazi. Both Heisenberg and Jaspers lived through World War II and neither were Nazis. Jaspers was blackwalled because of his Jewish wife. Heisenberg was forcibly drafted into the Army Weapons Bureau, but pre-war he had been repeatedly slandered as a “white Jew” and his career held back, and post-war became more political, worked against traditional primacy in the education system, and actively protested the government considering equipping the army with American nuclear weapons. Capcom reps have also stated that Karl Heisenberg has nothing to do with Nazis.)
Heisenberg: Calling mountain (could not find a specific definition, “heisen” means “to call” and “berg” means “mountain or hill”). Reference to Werner Karl Heisenberg, (explained above). Likely unrelated, but another well-known (in the US at least) name thief of Heisenberg comes from the popular TV show Breaking Bad as the alias/street name for the main character Walter White who takes the name and starts selling drugs when he is unable to afford medical care for his in-need child, but grows more twisted throughout the series. Also place name.
Berengario: Italian form of Berengar, which is derived from Germanic root words meaning “bear” and “spear”.
Cesare: Italian form of the Latin word Caesar, which is an imperial title like an emperor or empress. The word Caesar itself may come from caesaries meaning “hairy”.
Guglielmo: Italian form of the Germanic William, meaning “vehement protector” or “desired helmet”
Nichola: Anglicized form of the Greek Nikolaos meaning “victory of the people”. Also a variant of Nicholas (Considered a female variant but fuck gender roles and the description says he.). This character is also referred to as Father like a priest I looked into saints and while I found no notable Saint Nichola (meaning on Wikipedia) there are multiple Saint Nicholases, most notably Saint Nicholas of Myra, also known as the Wonderworker and the model of Santa Claus. Stories of him include gifting gold coins through a window of a home for three nights to prevent three girls from being forced into prostitution, calming a storm at sea, saving three soldiers from execution, and chopping down a possessed tree. More connected to where his treasure is found, there is also a tale of him resurrecting three children who had been murdered by a butcher who had had intended to sell their meat as “pork” during the famine.
*BONUS TIME*
By that I mean these are less important so I did slightly less research and/or didn’t feel like typing all the research so there’s less info, but it’s still relevant, so here you go!
Chris: A rare name in its own right, often a shortened version of names like Christopher, meaning “Christ-bearer”, and Christian, as in the religion.
Redfield: Literally red field. Fitting for the trail of blood in his wake because have mercy on any of his enemies, but regrettably including many of his friends and allies (rip in peace Piers Nivans).
Elena: Shining light. Greek origin.
Leonardo: Strong as a lion. Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese version of Leonard.
Lupu: Wolf. Romanian surname. Fitting as the surname of the man we saw become a lycan before our eyes.
Luiza: Renowned warrior. Polish, Portuguese, and Romanian name.
Iulian: Romanian name from the Greek iulius meaning “youthful” or “juvenile”, or ioulos meaning “downy-bearded”.
Vasile: Romanian name from the Greek basileus meaning ”king”. Vasile Voiculescu wrote a poem called Schimnicul, The Recluse in English, about varcolacul.
(Note: For those who don’t recall or didn’t notice his name in Ethan’s diary, this is Luiza’s husband.)
Rolando: Famous throughout the land. Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese variant of Roland.
Elba: Spanish form of Alba, which can mean “dawn”, “white”, or “elf”, depending on origin.
Dion: Shorter form of Greek Dionysios meaning “of Zeus”.
Wilson: Lineage surname, “Will’s son”. Very common surname in English.
Charlie: A name in itself but often a nickname for names like Charles meaning “man” or “warrior”
Graham: Gravelly homestead. Habitational surname, apparently derived from Grantham in Lincolnshire, England.
John: God is gracious. The most common name ever with the most variations.
Perlman: Ashkenazi Jewish surname. Also literal, “perl” possibly meaning “pearl” thus being an occupational name, or Perl being a woman’s name making it mean “husband of Perl”.
Emily: Rival. Latin name.
Berkoff: Could be Jewish, Dutch, or German surname. Definition not quite certain, but likely related to birch trees.
Josef: German, Czech, and Scandinavian version of Joseph.
Simon: He has heard. From Hebrew Shim’on.
Roxana: Bright, dawn. Latin form of Greek Rhoxane and Persian Roshanak.
Anton: Priceless, praiseworthy, flower.
Sebastian: From the Latin name Sebastianus which meant “from Sebaste”. Sebaste is a town in Asia Minor and comes from the Greek word sebastos meaning “venerable”.
Eugen: Well-born.Romanian form of Eugene. From the Greek name Eugenios.
(Note: This is the man who lived in the house with the red chimney.)
Ernest: Serious. Germanic name.
(Note: This man is noted to be missing in a letter to Luiza and his diary is found with the Cannibal’s Plunder in Otto’s Mill.)

do u have any atla fic recs? all time faves? can be shippy or not
Fun fact, I am incapable of holding back on reclists. In other words: brace yourself, anon. There’s a reason I put most of this behind a cut.
First off, these are almost all Zuko-centric, because I shamelessly play favorites. I’ll sort them by author rec, gen, shippy, and then by other characters because honestly the numbers break down well that way. Within those categories it’ll be more just as I think of it, so no special meaning to the order. I’m not always good about bookmarking even my faves, so some excellent stuff will no doubt be missing, especially since I haven’t read a lot of the more recent stuff yet/forgot some really old stuff, but this will definitely still give you plenty of fic to enjoy.
There’s a good number of FFN links on here so apologies to people who dislike it, but a lot of great stuff is still on there so give it a chance.
Author recs
Everything by @awesomeavocadolove Such hits as Another Brother (Zuko adopted by Hakoda pre-S1), and currently has a Zukka soulmate fic I’ve been meaning to start reading, as well as Unchained Melody, one of my favorite Zukka fics ever. Always quality, you can’t go wrong.
Everything by KimberlyT. I do not kid. She’s written a variety of ATLA fic ranging from Zutara/other romance to gen, seriously emotional to cracky cabbagebending. I think my favorite is probably Mismatched (S1 Zuko adopts a baby) but honestly just go read it all.
Everything by @emletish-fish. She has a very fun writing style and honestly her end-of-chapter notes on why she’s made the choices she has are fun minimetas worthwhile in their own right. Some of her top fics are the Stalking Zuko series (S3 suspicious Katara to Zutara) and The Worst Prisoner (the Gaang kidnaps Zuko in S1 and can’t get rid of him). I think there’s still a good amount of her fic that can only be found on FFN so check there too.
Everything by @botherkupo. Especially her Undying Fire series (healer!Zuko) but also just literally everything she writes, it is all so great. Tends toward Zutara but strong gen fics as well sometimes and a lot of fun. Check it all out!
Everything by @muffinlance. Loves to toy with her readers’ emotions in the best of ways. Tons of fantastic gen Zuko-centric AUs, I have adored every single fic I’ve ever read by her, can’t praise them enough. Very productive as well, her tumblr is a hub for the ATLA renaissance and her fics inspire lots of others. Has also organized a fanmade ATLA coloring book for charity so get that once it’s out. In the meantime read everything she’s written.
Everything by Haicrescendo. My favorite is What We’re Given (the series where Zuko finds more air bisons and raises them), but there’s a lot of good Zukka fic too. I tend to steer away from explicit works in this fandom unless it’s a smaller part of a much longer plot-centric fic, so there are a number I haven’t read, but I really like the Pokemon!AU Zukka.
Everything by @gaycinema. I really love the EK fight club series (Zuko fights in Rumbles/etc.) but all of it is a good read. Some Jetko, mostly a lot of introspective or emotional oneshots. Which isn’t really a great depiction of how good they tend to be, you’ll just have to read them and find out. You won’t regret it, trust me.
Everything by @captainkirkk. So far eight stellar fics, starting with kind Fire Lord Zuko and ranging to Floating Tea Shop!Zuko who doesn’t want to hunt the Avatar. I love her style and have laughed out loud at multiple of these.
Gen Zuko fic
Bringing Out the Blue by maguena1. [unfinished, long] Definitely worth the read. The first ATLA fic I ever got really sucked into. The Blue Spirit never gets knocked out so Aang doesn’t know his true identity; he joins the Gaang on a recurring basis, while Zuko attempts to tell himself this is only for information on how to catch them, they definitely aren’t his friends.
It’s Impossible by Sandra Phillips. [abandoned, long] One of the earliest Avatar!Zuko fics (sort of) and a really interesting take on some spirit stuff.
Embers by Vathara. [complete, long] A landmark fic in the fandom, and for good reason. I didn’t love everything about this fic, but it is very well-written and an absorbing read certainly worth the praise.
the art of description by incandescens. [oneshot, short] Five descriptions of Zuko and Toph’s field trip from various perspectives. Short, sweet, and funny.
Breaking Point by Kryal. [oneshot, short] Zuko isn’t banished but instead sent to serve in the Home Guard. I love Zuko loving his people, and alternate canon explorations, and this is exactly that.
The Alternative by Lunatique. [oneshot, short] The reason Zuko is so determined is because he fears what will happen if he isn’t the next Fire Lord. An idea I support in canon, to a degree, written well.
Hands and Knees by gigerisgod. [oneshot, short] Zuko reflects on the choices he’s made, and experiences he’s had, when joining the Gaang. A nice introspective fic.
Relative Misery by peroxidepest17. [oneshot, short] Toph complains about her family and Zuko takes her on a field trip. Not a fic I take too seriously, but funny in a sad way.
Second Nature by lazyartisan. [possibly abandoned, long] An AU stemming from Zuko’s capture at the North Pole. Well-written and characterized, an old favorite that I actually find needing to reread to give you more detail, but I can promise it’s good.
Year One by peroxidepest17. [oneshot, short] Lessons Zuko learns in his first year being Fire Lord. I really like explorations of Zuko’s journey as Fire Lord and this is a lovely little window into that.
Soft by PenPistola. [oneshot, short] Zuko and Toph bonding after the Ember Island Players. Short and sweet.
The New Phoenix King by JoeMerl. [oneshot, short] Fire Lord Zuko is overthrown, and no one but him is bothered at all. In fact they help. Hilarious crack.
First Name Basis by JoeMerl. [oneshot, short] There’s some popular posts going around Tumblr lately about Zuko not knowing the Gaang’s names, but this fic did it first back in 2008. As amusing as you’d expect.
Male Bonding by glamaphonic. [oneshot, short] The original ‘Zuko and Sokka bond and are also dumb idiot boys’ fic. Katara is permanently rolling her eyes.
it’s not the waking, it’s the rising by isamagicdragon, thegracious [ongoing, series, medium] Azulon tells Ozai to kill Azula instead of Zuko, which leads to heartwrenching fire sibs adventure. I haven’t caught up on the last chapter yet but god is it fantastic and also just a really interesting and new perspective on what could have happened.
Doe-Eyed by Anonymous. [complete, medium] Zuko is a baby, Azula is a loving big sister. More fire sibs and a great exploration on Azula’s POV of turning against Ozai.
kintsugi by discordiansamba. [ongoing, series, long] Zuko doesn’t have Iroh after being banished, and winds up hired as a guard to protect the frail Beifong daughter. Fantastic preseries Zuko+Toph found family fic.
Legacies by WildInkling. [ongoing, medium] Far in the future, a historian studies the journal of Fire Lord Zuko. Also, he was secretly a famous author but no one knows. A funny and poignant outsider POV.
#UndercoverZuko series by naggeluide. [complete, series, short] A completely cracky concept written straight enough to be actually quite touching in parts, but also just really funny. Zuko goes Undercover Boss on his ship pre-series.
Avatar Ficlets by JaggedCliffs. [series, oneshots, short] An ongoing series of disconnected oneshots, mostly post-canon and mostly Zuko-centric. Some a pretty fun, one is a great view on Zuko and lightningbending, all worth the read (and follow for when more come out).
The Blind Leading the Blue by BrusselsSprout. [ongoing, medium] An epic Zuko and Toph field trip set in S2. I love them and this.
half in the shadows, half burned in flames by r_astra. [oneshot, short] Iroh dies, Zuko gets caught on the Day of Black Sun, everything ends up all right but damn does it hurt getting there.
A Tale of Earth and Fire by chiiyo86. [complete, medium] Zuko and Toph are married for Politics in a FN Wins AU, and follows them slowly bonding as friends to beginning a revolution. They’re married but it’s not romantic, just some good friendship.
Eight Principles of Yong by psocoptera. [oneshot, short] An exploration of immediate post-show FN politics (sort of), calligraphy, and Zuko. Also has some lovely non-fighting firebending; I always love when people explore other uses of bending.
Healing Properties of Cinder Sage by Dawen. [oneshot, short] Zuko gets very sick in the Western Air Temple. Some good interaction when he’s new to the Gaang, and Toph+Zuko friendship.
We Ourselves Must Walk The Path by WinterSky101. [complete, medium] The Gaang agrees to make Zuko their prisoner in the WAT. Speaking of new-to-the-Gaang, tension, this fic has plenty of it, and also features some good Toph and Zuko.
Frozen by Aris Merquoni. [oneshot, medium] Zuko is captured in the NWT. Some politics, lots of angst, and eventually, healing. Also actually makes me somewhat like Hahn? Incredibly enough.
Reluctant Hero by PAW_07. [ongoing, long] Avatar!Zuko fic. I got to beta it way back when for a little while before I got too busy, and have always been a huge fan of this fic. Great concept, one of the best executions of it I’ve seen, and also one of the first. Definitely read this.
Morality Chain by Pureauthor. [abandoned, long] Azula and Zuko were always on each other’s side; how this changes canon. I love this concept and would happily read a lot more fics with it (please guys, I need more fire sibs).
A viper-lizard’s tales series by Yumi_Take. [ongoing, long] The world needs more of Zuko adopting pets and small children, and those are just facts. This only has one of the two, but it’s a EK baby! Jet plays a big role in this fic as well, a weird kind of uncle-ish to the baby/friend/murderer Zuko needs to watch closely and hold back kind of thing.
(life happens) wherever you are by howlikeagod. [ongoing, long] Katara doesn’t find Zuko and Iroh in the teashop, and canon takes a sharp left turn. Excellent Gaang fic.
The Best Path series by EudociaCovert. [series, ongoing, long] Zuko meets Jet in ‘Zuko Alone’ and winds up getting claimed as theirs by the remaining Freedom Fighters. Really really well-written, I got quite emotional over some scenes.
Shippy Zuko fic
Balm by Thyme In Her Eyes. [Maiko, oneshot, short] A sweet little fic about Mai’s thoughts on Zuko’s lightning scar.
The Black Games by Mrs. Pettyfer. [Zutara, complete, long] Hunger Games-esque AU. It’s the first in a series, and I lost interest after this one but I remember enjoying the fic and it was more personal preference rather than a drop in quality that had me leaving.
Lie To Me by Inkcharm. [Toko, oneshot, short] I’m not actually a fan of this pairing romatically (at least until years down the line), but this little fic of Toph and Zuko bonding through lying to one another is sweet. I choose to ignore the more shippy parts and enjoyed it.
Zutara? What the heck is that? by Ryxl. [Zutara, oneshot, short] Complete crack, have a good sense of humor and I think you will enjoy. Just the mental image of the Gaang finding a Zutara propaganda flyer had me chuckling.
The Three Chores series (1, 2, 3) by Fandomme. [Zutara, threeshot, short] Zuko and Katara slowly bond as he helps with chores. I will admit it’s been years and I barely remember this, but what I do recall is lovely and I always appreciate people lightening Katara’s load.
read the inscription by suzukiblu. [Zuko/Song, complete, series, medium] When Zuko is banished, he is left alone in the Earth Kingdom to fend for himself. Very touching, and I love Song in this.
Hooked by TGP. [Jetko, complete, long] A classic ‘Jet didn’t see Iroh warming his tea’ fic. They’re almost all this premise but so many well-written and very long ones.
Something To Hold Onto by Wildgoosery. [Jetko, complete, long] The EK fell and Li stayed to fight with the Freedom Fighters to protect the city during its foreign rule. Jet didn’t see the tea fic that goes very AU from canon.
Foxfire by Rahar_Moonfire. [Jetko, ongoing, long] Zuko loses his memories Jetko fic, but with heavy spirit influence and lovable EK OCs, both of which I adore and should be in far more fics.
Once Upon A Teashop by anaer. [Zukka, Jetko, ongoing, long] Cracky Ba Sing Se AU that gets gradually more and more serious. Jet hits on Zuko a lot and Sokka gets a job in the teashop to keep an eye on both of them. Endgame Zukka but heavy Jetko, and both pairings are handled pretty well, not a love triangle that makes me too mad, although as always bear in mind Jet’s messed up.
Names by TGP. [Jetko, complete, long] I feel like I’m forgetting some more excellent Amnesia!Zuko fics, but this is one I do know of. To be honest I don’t remember it super well because it may be mixed up with other Jetko/amnesia fics in my mind, but I think it was really good. I’ll have to reread myself.
Epistles by Lady_of_the_Flowers. [Zukka, ongoing, long] I love epistolary fic and I love Zuko and Sokka bonding earlier in canon. I will be honest I haven’t read this in a long time and been updating all the while, but the premise alone (Zuko and Sokka become messenger-hawk-pals in S1 and then fall in love) is fantastic.
Ozymandias, King of Kings by Think_of_a_Wonderful_Thought. [Zukka, ongoing, long] Zuko rebels earlier and actually is sent to the mines, until he is ‘rescued’ by the Water Tribe. Dark but getting lighter over time, and more reluctant-to-rule Zuko which always wrenches my heartstrings. I prefer super loyal and dutiful to his people Zuko but this trope always makes me feel things.
Crossovers
Fallen Drops of Fire by Chasmfiend. [Fullmetal Alchemist, ongoing] Young Azula and Zuko somehow appear in Amestris, and encounter Roy Mustang. I adore the fire sibs, and their relationship in this strange situation is the star of this fic for me, but it’s also fun seeing the FMA perspective of these two.
The Dragon-King’s Temple by Kryal. [Stargate SG-1, long, complete] The best crossover fic out there. Zuko and Toph get stranded on the other side of a Stargate. I don’t know anything about SG-1 but it didn’t matter, the fic was fantastic, they were badasses, it explored language and culture from an outside perspective, and it was just a ton of fun. Must-read.
Other character fic
Loyalty by Julia451. [oneshot, short] The ship captain didn’t misspeak when he called Iroh and Zuko “prisoners” in the start of S2. A lovely look at a nameless character, giving depth to a small moment and humanity to a FN soldier which I always love.
The Only One by HarlowR. [oneshot, short] An excellent exploration of Azula’s mindset regarding Zuko, her desperate need to be loved and jealousy of him matching his own. I think Azula was one of the greatest tragedies of the show, and this fic makes me feel it.
Blood by theAsh0. [oneshot, short] Katara-centric thinkpiece on bloodbending and healing. Dark but really interesting.
Touch and Go by Cadence. [oneshot, short] After Iroh’s struck by lightning, Toph doesn’t let Zuko drive them all away. A momentary alliance and the seeds of friendship. More Toph-focused but still heavy on the whole Gaang.
Shortcomings by Menamebephil. [oneshot, short] Iroh thoughts during his imprisonment, on the theme of mistakes. I love this man and don’t understand why I am so drawn to fic about him that makes me sad.
Watch And Review, Please by Becca Stareyes. [oneshot, short] The Ember Island Players receive some constructive criticism... sort of. Funny and quick.
Azula Redemption Trilogy (1, 2, 3) by Mistress of Sarcasm. [threeshot, short] Second person and deeply introspective, three short little fics delving into Azula’s head and bringing her closer to redemption.
Echoing Refrains by catie_writes_things. [oneshot, short] I really like nuanced explorations of the whole FN royal family. It’s perfectly fine to write Ozai as pure evil bastard, but exploring what might have been or how he got there, or even as in this fic his talent for music being inherited by Zuko is really interesting too. Iroh-centric.
our curse by ohmygodwhy, and the last dragon by thesometimeswarrior. [twoshot, complete, short] Stay away if you don’t like to cry. In the first Zuko learns Ozai is executing Iroh, and isn’t able to stop it; the second is even worse because it’s Iroh’s POV. I put this in the other characters section because honestly I adore the second fic even more than the first, but they are both fantastically written and will hurt you a very great deal.
Finally, I’m not quite bold enough to put my own fic on a reclist, but just shameless enough to mention I’ve written a few Avatar fics I quite like if anyone feels the desire to check them out on my AO3. ;) But seriously give love to all the rest of these, they deserve it. (And as I said, there’s lots more excellent stuff, this fandom is so prolific and well-written!)

Morgan was born on a small island (Delacroix) in Northern Michigan to young parents Joseph and Maddelynn MacVeigh. Maddleynn tragically died during childbirth and as such, this ultimately lead Joseph to raise both his daughter as well as his eldest son, Michael, as a single parent.
As a member her father’s ancestral coven (MacVeigh) since birth, Morgan has had a target on her back the very moment she drew her first breath. Shortly after her older brother was born, a terrible attack on the coven’s headquarters in Scotland initially forced her father and his family out of the country in search of someplace where they could hide and would not be found.
The people who attacked the MacVeigh coven were a cult of rogue witches and magic practitioners who prided themselves on their knowledge of archaic magic and faerie lore, particularly, Unseelie in nature. The MacVeigh coven had been at odds with this group, known only as The Followers of the Black Mare, for as long as anyone on either side of the conflict can remember.
After the Black Mare attacked the MacVeigh Coven, Joseph as the high priest decided that he and his family would flee to the island of Delacroix where not only was his own wife born and raised, but unbeknownst to Joseph at the time, this would also be where his second child would grow to live and learn about the same generational magic that flows through her and her family’s veins.
Coven reinforcements were sent along with Joseph and his family to Delacroix where they would set up what was supposed to be a “temporary stronghold” in his wife’s hometown. Several other members of the MacVeigh coven joined the leader’s family in migration in order to provide around the clock protection and help set up Joseph’s individual sept of close knit followers.
After Morgan’s mother passed away, Joseph sunk into a severe depression and isolated himself, both physically and emotionally, from his children in the following months. It was up to Michael MacVeigh as well as the house staff (nannies, cooks, maids, etc.) to practically raise and provide for Morgan in the years to come. Morgan would not learn the truth pertaining to her mother’s inevitable passing until the age of five years old. Eventually, Joseph was able to gradually begin the process of healing from Maddelynn’s passing but throughout the rest of Morgan’s life, he’s dedication to his children hardly ever took precedence over the dedication he possessed towards the role of leader of the MacVeigh Coven.
In time, Morgan grew up to be an incredibly powerful witch and defender of good. She spent most of her childhood and adolescence surrounded by her coven’s wealth, influence, and power both magically, financially, and socially. She trained alongside her brother as well as various other young coven members during her life on Delacroix with the hope that one day she would be able to put what she learned over time to the test and serve her ancestral coven as a soldier for the benefit of magic and the magical world.
On Morgan’s 18th birthday, another shocking attack was launched by the Black Mare against her father’s inner circle residing on Delacroix. In the time after the attack, nobody knew how the cult was able to find out where Joseph and his family had escaped to after their first encounter with one another. After a rigorous battle which would later become known amongst MacVeigh coven members as the “Delacroix Massacre”, Morgan would learn that both her father and brother died during the attack trying to defend the rest of the coven. Many lives were lost that day, and the ones that weren’t including Morgan herself were swiftly rushed out of the country only to retreat back to the coven’s castle in Scotland.
During her time in Scotland, Morgan would meet members of her family that she had never laid eyes on nor heard of before and in time become privy to a terrible secret, one that would change the fate of the MacVeigh Coven forever.

The Strange, the Fantastical, and the Horrifying
I’ve discovered I love writing weird stuff, so I decided to put together a list of my strangest, my most fantastical, and my most horrifying fics. Maybe there’s something here for everyone. Enjoy! <3
Johnlock
Rose Madder - Explicit. 25,415 words. With a history of bad choices firmly behind him, Sherlock Holmes has established himself with New Scotland Yard as a brilliant if egotistical solver of crime. An island unto himself, he's avoided all thoughts and urges of sentimental or physical attachment to another person not only for the sake of The Work, but for the equilibrium of his Mind Palace. Until he meets John Watson. This seemingly ordinary yet compelling man catches Sherlock's interest as something more than a mere roommate. When John moves in, he brings with him something unexpected: a strange family heirloom. The nightmare begins. (Tags include: Season 1 AU, Gay Pilot, creepy dolls)
Into the Gloaming - Mature. 8,385 words. She lays the sage bundle down in one of his seashells, avoiding the label. How he loved cataloging natural items. That sharp mind of his so naturally tended to the sciences, and she’d taken great joy in encouraging him all his life. All the first thirteen years of it. The last year has been entirely different. His hand lies just outside the white comforter. When she touches it, the chill of his skin sends a shiver down her spine. His lips move, his voice as soft as dead, dry leaves. “What’s that, love?” she says.“In the trees,” he says, his eyes still closed. “Is it John there in the trees? I think he’s waiting for me.” Viola turns her gaze out the window and to the closest tree, a resplendent cherry in the throes of autumn. In the branches there, for just a second, she thinks she sees it: a black bird, feathers gleaming in the sun. (Tags include: Creator Chose not to Use Archive Warnings, Mythology References, child death, Heavy Angst)
Haunted - Explicit. 22,342 words. Plagued by the past, John moves himself and his daughter to a new flat for a fresh start - and it's not 221B Baker Street. While he grapples with new knowledge and old guilt, he's confronted with odd neighbors and strange noises in the night. But is it the new flat, or is John Watson losing his grip on reality? (Tags include: post-canon, apologetic John, child endangerment, scary)
Mystrade
The Ghost in the Graphite - Explicit. WIP. He's spent his life avoiding idleness with pencil and paper. It's unpredictable. A visitor could slide into his mind, animate his limbs, and attempt to communicate through sketching. They come to him for closure - or for justice. Greg Lestrade joined the police force to placate the ghosts that haunt him. His greatest asset in solving crime flings himself off of a building, and Greg is once more faced with too many sleepless nights. When a forceful spirit and a troubling case appear, there's a chance an innocent man could end up in prison. Out of desperation, Greg turns to the one person he thinks could help him: Mycroft Holmes. As attraction blooms between them, the case becomes far more twisted and dangerous than expected. The full moon approaches. Time is running out. (Tags include: post-Reichenbach Fall, Medium!Greg, Slow Burn)
Among the Roses - Explicit. 14,043 words. The moon shone brightly on the garden, the colours of the roses now muted blue-greys like pebbles along the shore. A shiver ran down his spine as the hairs on his neck tingled. “Hello?” he said. Looked to the left and the right. Not a soul. “Who’s there?” His grip on the umbrella handle was clammy. A foghorn bellowed in the distance. Clouds crept over the moon’s face, casting long, gauzy shadows over the garden. Mycroft stepped back, and shut the door. He tried to quell the racing of his heart as he stood there, listening. “I’ve been waiting,” the man said, his voice as rough as waves hitting the rocks. (Tags include: MCD, Reunited and it Feels So Good, Angst with a Happy Ending)
A Song for a Siren - Mature. 13,992 words. Perhaps most fearsome among beasts is a monster with a sweet voice and an appetite that compels it to gorge on the marrow of men. It hid among the waves and in the crevices of the craggy rocks, its stringy hair slick along a back as pale as a fish's belly, its ocean-hued eyes forever fixed on the ship that carried the gallant Captain Lestrade. In a world of madness and monsters, many a man meets his fate at the pointed teeth of an otherworldly creature. (Tags include: Cthulu references, Multiple POV, Happy Ending)
Night of the Grey Mare - Teen. 8,606 words. Every Christmas Eve, Mycroft visits the Watson-Holmes family to deliver a story to his precious niece, and share in a little of the mulled wine. This year, Rosie wants to hear something scary. Mycroft tells her a frightening tale of The Christmas Witch, and then takes his leave before Sherlock and John can enact their usual routine to make him feel unwelcome. The way home is fraught with unforeseen events and Mycroft soon finds himself in his own frightening tale of horror. Or does he? (Tags include: Post-canon, Icelandic Mythology, Scary Stories on Christmas Eve)
The Tenth Muse - Explicit. 25,365 words. Mycroft sees things other people can’t. Lights, spectres, shades, demons, phantasms, and creatures that no one else can see. Voices no one else can hear. Colours eddying around people’s bodies, visible only to his eyes.It isn't deduction for Mycroft; it's a living nightmare that leads to self-imposed isolation. When Sherlock "dies," Mycroft finds himself reaching out for a golden slice of happiness, just one person to call his own in a landscape of horrors.
Sherstrade
[Deleted] - Teen. 10,400 words. Greg Lestrade and John Watson awake to find themselves locked in an unfinished basement. While they are well acquainted with one another, the two men aren't friends. But the darkness has ways of bringing people closer together. Meanwhile, Sherlock and Sally must work together to solve the case of a missing John Watson. They're running out of time. (Tags include: Pre-Slash, no TFP, Trapped, Rescue)
Hannigram
The Thing in the House - Mature. WIP. Horror-obsessed Abigail Hobbs lives in a cookie-cutter neighborhood where everyone is dreadfully boring. On the verge of graduating, she's eager to get out and pursue her dream of becoming a Special Effects Makeup Artist. Her big focus: monsters. She never thought an actual monster might move in next door. And she never thought that the monster might uncover her own secrets. (Tags include: Fright Night homage, POV Abigail Hobbs)
Geraskier
The Slippery Dark - Explicit. 7,944 words. Suspicion and guilt war beneath his skin like adversarial ant colonies - writhing and biting. None of this is right, but who is Geralt to demand answers from Jaskier? The bard has changed. He chafes at his clothes as if beset by a rash, he stares into the distance with a down-turned mouth and sad eyes, and he won't tell Geralt about the monster they're facing other than "it'll be easy for you to kill it," and "you're the only one I would ask." Anytime Geralt tries to bring up his angry outburst on the mountain, Jaskier walks away without a word. And the dreams. Geralt's dreams are strange and frightening. When they settle in at a castle in ruins for protection from a coming storm, will what lurks in the shadows finally consume the Witcher? Or will the Witcher find what he should have wished for all along? (Tags include: season 1 AU, Geralt apologizes)

I made some AU..Sorry for my poor English
Noir AU
Seven families guarding the island contracted each other with magic. Hanako, the owner of the (7th) largest family, is the representative. These are mysteries to the general public. The power of the family is proportional to the magic power of the house owner.
The contract requires a mediator. For example, the clock used for contracting with 'No. 1', silver scissors for No. 2, and a high-quality mirror for No. 3, etc.
No. 1-Time Control
No. 2-Space Move
No. 3-Clairvoyance
No. 4-Show the Hallucinations
No. 5-Link the Memory
No. 6-Change the Life Span
No. 7-Make a wish come true
it is not effective for themselves and exorcist. Currently, No.7 is crushing the medium by guessing that there are traitors. Because the magic ability is lowered when the mediator destroyed..
They wear the masks that cover their eyes during each meeting.
Owl / fox (Japanese one) / crow + mirror sculpture / sky blue + bluebird / butterfly + spider wire / goat's skull/ white with red letters, moon-shaped decoration
+) The mask of Tsukasa is black and red. It is a cat-shaped mask. It disappeared with Tsukasa.
•No.1 - Akane
He is Aoi's childhood friend and No.1. It was suggested by Kako and Mirai, who recognized his abilities. He was reluctant at first. But he accepted the offer because he thought Aoi would get along if his status upgrad. The largest clock in the house is the mediator.
•No.2 - Yako
She is the owner of the second house. The scissors given by the teacher she admired are the mediator. She is still looking for him.(He is missing)
•No.3 - Mitsuba

And Amane became to the owner instead. Only few people know this fact(ex. seven-member in each household). Also, Amane uses the alias(Hanako) outside to hide the fact that the owner has changed.
•Broadcast Club
The organization to which Tsukasa belongs that manipulates the media throughout the island. Sakura became Tsukasa's assistant in exchange for a wish to Tsukasa, and Natsuhiko joined the organization for Sakura.
•Yashiro Nene
Nene is the daughter of the largest florist on the island. They sell not only common flowers, but also precious flowers. Amane is fell in love with her. Nene gets caught up in the mermaid's curse, and making a contract with Amane to become his assistant.
•Minamoto
Minamotos is the island's exorcist. They are dissatisfied with the fact that seven people control the island. But Kou, the second of them, is sit on the fence about it.
•Aoi
Nene's best friend. On the island, she is a young lady of the middle class. She is Akane's childhood friend, and the house runs a lantern business.

Finland’s most famous graveyard must be Hietaniemi Cemetery. Many famous people are buried there, including presidents. And a whole bunch of artists. They have a separate area for them, the “artist’s hill.” But one famous artist didn’t get to be buried there among other great painters, sculptors and writers.
Helene Schjerfbeck.
One of the most famous Finnish artists wasn’t buried in the artist’s hill. She did get a grave in another part of Hietaniemi Cemetery, though. And that grave? Until very recently, was left unattended, growing weeds. It was only because there’s a movie coming out about Schjerfbeck that someone pointed out the sorry state of her grave. Everyone excited about the movie was making great speeches how her art being so loved internationally brought Finns national pride, and someone wrote an angry comment in the newspaper, pointing that it’s disrespectful for politicians and art patrons to claim they love and appreciate her work while her grave grows nettles and we can’t be bothered to pay for the caring of her grave from public sources.
Some organisation took taking care of Schjerfbeck’s grave as their responsibility. But it was still very disturbing to me how a female artist was treated so differently, even in death.
The reason I’m writing this is because I went to see Portrait of a Lady on Fire recently. The movie left me an emotional wreck, it touched me on such a basic, almost subconscious level that I’m not sure I’m able to write anything coherent about my feelings. But I will try. Though I think this is a movie one must see for oneself, nothing I say about it will be able to describe the experience properly.
This post contains spoilers for the movie.
The movie is set in 1770 France. A time when female artists were forbidden from painting men, but allowed to paint portraits of women. The protagonist Marianne is one such exceptional lady who had a father open minded enough to allow her an artist’s career instead of choosing from the remaining three options.
The remaining options? Convent, marriage or suicide.
The plot revolves around a woman, Heloise, who chose convent, but has that choice forcibly taken away from her after her sister chose suicide over arranged marriage and the family now needs to go for plan B and sell their second daughter to some man she has never met. Her mother needs a portrait of her to use as a selling tool, showing it to the man she intends to make her marry. Heloise resists and refuses to pose for an artist. So her mother hires Marianne, who is to pretend to be someone hired for keeping Heloise company, but secretly she is painting her portrait.
I admit I don’t often enjoy watching movies. It’s just not my medium of choice. But then again, most of the movies I’ve seen are Hollywood stuff or pretentious artsy films, and both of those can be too much for someone as sensitive as I am. I can’t handle violence or unnecessary sex scenes. Also, the vast majority of movies are stories made by men, about men, for men. Even the women in movies are seen through the eyes of men.
But this movie is made by women, about women, for women.
The absence of man’s eyes is notable in small details. How there are no important male characters in this movie, men only show up in the very beginning and end and even then they are just background extras. The fact that we don’t get sex scenes (a male director could never resist doing that when handling a story about lesbians). The fact that both leading ladies look rather plain, ordinary women instead of your typical Hollywood barbie-dolls. The last time I saw a woman in a movie with unshaved armpits was back in highschool when during Swedish lesson we watched some Swedish flick that had a loudly feminist character who made a point of not shaving.
There’s a scene where a woman goes to an old lady to get an abortion done. If this scene was done by a man, if it had been filmed in Hollywood, they would have made her scream in pain and showed the blood and discharge and feasted on every gruesome detail of the procedure. But the scene is calm, peaceful and intimately respectful. We don’t need to see any details. Focusing on what’s going on between her legs is unnecessary, seeing her face trying to keep calm but breaking into silent, suffocated cries is enough.
Women suffer silently. We have all been taught to grin and bear it, the harder it hurts, the harder you must smile.
The movie isn’t gloomy and depressing. The unpleasant truths jab at your heart without you noticing. Because they let the story speak for itself. No one needs to point out the unfairness of women’s fate in a world ruled by men. The doomed romance between Marianne and Heloise speaks loud enough. Their knowledge that once the portrait is finished, it’s all over. Heloise’s family home is situated on an island with steep cliffs around its shores and surrounded by the restless, ice cold waters of the sea. It’s all very symbolic. There is no escape.
The story builds slowly, patiently. I shouldn’t constantly compare this to Hollywood movies, but in an American movie you could never have this few spoken lines and take this long before the romance buds. Marianne knows she only has few days to finish the portrait, but she and Heloise don’t rush anything and live like they had all the time in the world. They are powerless to do anything to the fate looming ahead and instead spend their last days together without worrying about it. But the viewer is constantly aware of what is going to happen in the end. The tension builds, invisible hands are placed on my throat and slowly tighten their grip. When the last scene begins, I feel so choked by catharsis that I have to breathe through parted lips. I was happy for the movie theater’s darkness, so that neither of my friends sitting beside me could see the tears flowing down my cheek. Women suffer silently, I have been taught to hide my tears and be ashamed if they are discovered.
My friends gave me a ride back home and we talked about the movie. Tigel mentioned that she’d probably have to search the net for fix-it-fics to help her deal with her feelings. I responded that I probably have to call my mother and thank her for letting me choose my own fate and loving me just as I am.
I had to make a phone call like that once before. It was when I was reading Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall. At first I didn’t even like the book, or the main character. But slowly I began to notice similarities between myself and Stephen. They felt so familiar, so much more personal than any of the things het characters in other books did or said. I became frighteningly aware that this book wasn’t just about one specific person, it was about my people. I knew that the story wouldn’t have a happy ending (with a name like Well of Loneliness, what do you expect?) but I couldn’t stop reading. I felt as if I had a responsibility to read on, that I owed it to my past fellow lesbians. Stephen was a fictional character, but she was made to speak for us, to speak for the unfairness of a homosexual’s fate in a world ruled by heteros. For the silent suffering of women who were rejected by society.
When I got to the part where Stephen’s mother tells her that she wished she had never been born, I had to stop. The pain became unbearable. I had to put the book away and call my mother, seeking relief from the invisible hands choking me. I don’t remember that call very well, because I was an emotional mess during it. I remember telling her over and over again that I don’t take for granted the fact that she loves me despite knowing I’m a lesbian. That I am painfully aware that many have not been as fortunate as me. Even today, even in modern, civilized countries like Finland, there are countless gays and lesbians who are rejected by their parents. When you’re homosexual, being loved by your parent isn’t a default, it’s a matter of luck. I have been so very, very lucky.
Both the Well of Loneliness and Portrait of a Lady on Fire have touched me by making me aware of the history of my people. While some parts of our history is celebrated (all the great artists and other historic figures who were one of us), there’s the heavy weight of knowledge about our oppression, how in order for lesbians to live happily ever after in the past they had to be sneaky and so very, very lucky. Not all lesbians were Anne Listers, whose family was ok with not pressuring her to marry. I feel pain thinking how many women there must have been who were forced to suffer just like Stephen, just like Heloise.
Another reason why our history lies heavy on my mind is because so much of it is lost, hidden, denied and shamed because of heteros. They burned Sappho’s poems. Fire also claimed the love letters men sent to Philippe, brother of Ludwig XIV. While gay men were sentenced openly, lesbianism wasn’t even spoken out loud, out of fear that women couldn’t commit such a sin if they were unaware of its existence. Oscar Wilde was sentenced to prison and died in France, his legacy to the art of writing unappreciated by his countrymen. How many of our graves grew nettles, because we were the dirty secret that everyone wanted to forget? How many of us had uncared graves because the only thing lesser than a woman is a woman who refuses to center her life around a man?
Now I’m going to voice an unpopular opinion that’s probably going to give me hatemail but I’m going to voice it anyway. I don’t like it when people posthumously push trans identity to people who did not identify as trans in life. There’s no way around it, I find it disrespectful. The reason I’m mentioning this is, that despite not liking it, I completely understand why they do it. Trans folks long for a history. They want their own Sapphos and Oscar Wildes. They want great historic characters to look up to and think “We have always been here and despite the world being against us, we could achieve great things.” The weight of lesbian and gay history can be a painful burden, but it will also give us comfort, knowing that people like us have always been and will always be there, that even when heteros made attempts to silence us or wipe us out of existence, we clung to the surviving parts of our history and treasured them. We will never know what the full poem behind the fragment “Someone will remember us/I say/even in another time” was like, but even so those words are precious to us. I do not blame trans folks for wishing for a history, even small fragments to reach through time and give them comfort.
In case I will receive hatemail for this, I will make an announcement. I have no obligation to react to any message, comment or reblog sent my way. This is my blog, my house, my personal space. I decide who is invited in and who is not. If someone tries to contact me and I see they want to debate, before even reading what they’ve written to me, I will check their blog. A quick glance will usually be enough to reveal if the person in question is capable of intelligent and mature conversation or if engaging in debate with them will just be playing chess with a pigeon (the pigeon will knock the pawns over, bite your nose, shit on the board and then fly to boast to its fellow pigeons how well it won you in a game of chess). If I deem you a pigeon chess player, you will be ignored. I have no time to waste on useless debate. All terfhunters will be ignored as well, I do not wish to interact with the likes of them. However, just like not all gender criticals are radical feminists, not all trans folks are terfhunters. I am willing to speak with people I disagree with, but I will be choosing who I wish to speak with and who I won’t. If I see that you can’t behave, you are not welcome here.

{Tokyo Disneyland’s Attic Bride}
Much like the American Mansion, the Japanese mansion has various different backstories that you can find on forums, from cast members and in other media.
The Fan Canon/Cast member Stories:
I don’t know if this is still used but this is a basic story constructed by mansion fans and one that I was told by a Ghost Hostess (In America the mansion has maids and butlers, in Japan the mansion has hosts and hostesses, now that’s settled, let’s get onto the goods) goes:
The bride’s name is Tai, short for the Chinese term ‘TaiTai’ which refers to the wife of a rich man or someone in nobility. Sometimes, an alternative way of writing and saying her name is ‘Tae’ which means ‘Crystal’ (consider this a nickname for her).
She was a 16-year-old girl who was incredibly creative, often admiring the tiny detail in things like vases and wallpaper and always preferred to be alone with her own imagination rather than among large groups of people, one of her favourite things to do when alone was dance and sing.
This story is fairly basic in which Tai immigrated from China with her family to start a new life and her parents decided it was the time to marry her off. She met with various suitors but never showed much interest in them. Various men wanted to marry the youthful young lady, but she refused every one of them and always preferred to enjoy whatever else was happening around them.
All hope on marrying their daughter seemed lost for her parents. Until one day when she fell in love with a rich man who owned the mansion, everything seemed so perfect. The groom had the wedding planned in a hurry and Tai never questioned why, she was just as eager to get married. Only, while she wanted it out of love, the groom was determined to get his hands on Tai’s money and inheritance, he never truly loved her, only her money.
The day of the wedding came and the ceremony was beautiful. However, the marriage only lasted until that night, when the groom stabbed her in the heart, he hid her body in the trunk in the attic of his mansion and forged a note, convincing her parents that she had run away. To this day, her soul still lurks in the attic.

The Bride’s Backstory according to the Matome Naver forums (translated by yours truly):
According to this backstory, the name of the bride is Emily Kabanov Gracey.
Emily was born into a wealthy family on Rhode Island, ever since she was a small child, her parents were determined for her to one day inherit their property. But unfortunately for them, Emily was strange girl and enjoyed staring at the patterns of flowers on the wallpaper for hours each day and although her parents were desperate to teach her responsibility for her status, she refused to understand the weight of her position.
Emily's parents were suddenly killed by a runaway carriage when she was only young, and the entire property of the Kabanov family was passed on to the unskilled heiress. It was during the funeral that she met Master Gracey, he had recently lost his wife and had been determined to comfort his wife's soul by becoming Buddhist. Emily, a sensitive 16-year-old girl, immediately fell in love after seeing his prestigious figure and his boyish face. When he applied for marriage between the two of them, Emily, who knew nothing, gladly agreed.
The wedding was beautiful and the bride looked magnificent in her dress. Though it wouldn’t last long, as an incident occurred in the Gracie House during the honeymoon. Madame Leota was waiting for a young bride, when the time came, she killed her and cleaned up the evidence.
Emily was young and still naughty, so she played hide-and-seek with the groom. She wanted to start this honeymoon game and couldn't wait to take off the wedding dress and change clothes into something more comfortable. When looking for a place to hide, she stumbled across the attic and could hear Master Gracey calling out to her, so, she quickly hid in the trunk. The inside was uncomfortable and suffocating, so after a few moments she tried to get out, only to hear a metal, scratching sound. Madame Leota locked the trunk in order to eliminate the bride and gain Master Gracie’s affection. Unfortunately, the young bride died of suffocation.
To this day, her screams are heard alongside the beating of her heart, and her ghost stands by the trunk that killed her.

Movie Plotline:
Surprisingly, the 2004 Haunted Mansion movie starring Eddie Murphy is pretty well loved in Japan! So a lot of fans also follow the idea that the bride is Elizabeth Henshaw! We already know that story so I’m not covering that here.
More fun Stuff!
- Her design is made to coincide with Japanese beauty standards. She has a very prominent double lid, very neat hair with blunt bangs, a small chin, a pouty lip and she’s very small. (Around 5’1” comparing to the 5,3” of the American brides). Her bouquet also has bits of lace in it and her hair is actually a blonde Lolita wig!
- She glows either blue or purple depending on the lighting used that day, but unlike the American Bride, her heart is a bright pink!
- Some mansion fans like to say that her lighting shows her mood. If the bride is more purple, she is happy, if she is a dark blue, she is sad and if she is a medium blue (most common), she is neutral.
- The bride Is INCREDIBLY well received in Tokyo.
- For 2018 Halloween, she had a Minnie ears headband which sold out in a week!
- They rereleased it in 2019 (only they replaced the bat with a spider and instead of printing the logo on the back, it’s embroidered) and it sold out in a few days!!!
- She’s the most Disney bounded character during Halloween and the second most popular/cosplayed mansion character next to the hostesses.
- They also added in this glowing heart pendant which ALSO sold out!
- Along with a cute, glowing candle which, while it has Minnie mouse on it, people on Instagram and various social media keep using it for their Disney bounds of her and calling it the bride’s candle!
- During a Halloween parade in the early 2000’s, Clarice was seen dressed as her on a float. (GHOST BRIDE CLARICE WALKED SO THAT PARADE MEL, SPECTRAL CONSTANCE AND SPOOKY BOO EMILY COULD RUN)
- And then, as you all know, the parade version of Emily which debuted yesterday, her entire spiel is that she has to choose a suitor among the suitors dancing around her, all desperate for her hand in marriage, but she rejects them all, as she would much rather join in on the singing, dancing and festivities, this actually ties in with the lore that cast members tell you about:

A witch OC from May. I brushed her up a little.
Name: Phoenix Maki
Name meaning: Phoenix refers to the mythological bird that is reborn by being burned and rising from it’s own ashes. The name is Ancient Greek meaning “Dark red”. Maki is a Japanese surname meaning “Shepherd” or “Tend Cattle”.
Age: 18
Birthday: July 22 1990
Family: Satsuki Maki (Father), Maria Josefa Dominguez (Mother), Hikari Maki (Paternal Uncle), Peyton Valentine (Aunt by Marriage)
Appearance: Phoenix is a young woman Japanese and Filipino descent, possessing hip length curly coal black hair, coffee brown eyes framed with thick, long eyelashes and medium skin that she tans. She stands 6’ and is rather athletic.
Phoenix dresses in loose, casual clothing. She has a large array of athletic wear as she often participates in lots of sports. Her hair is French braided when she does sports and when she’s not she leaves it down. Jewelry wise, she has a earring on her left ear that’s in the shape of a safety pin and a earring on her right ear that’s in the shape of a lyre, she also wears a choker with a black tourmaline pendant.
Personality: Phoenix is a passionate and creative person. A proud witch she tried to do no harm but people kept testing her so she does harm if people anger her. She has a tendency to be short-tempered and stubborn, being fired from her first job after she assaulted a patron.
Phoenix tends to be indecisive and often goes with the flow instead of coming up with a plan, as seen when she spent a solid 10 minutes figuring out if she wanted cheddar cheese or pepper jack for her sandwich. She’s highly competitive when it comes to sports striving to be Number 1 so she’s often seen drinking health drinks and performing spells that will benefit her.
Likes: Wrestling, Chirinabe, Miso soup, gardening, her big bedroom, snakes, jasmines, when she reaches her weight goal for wrestling, the sound of rain, money bowl spell
Dislikes: “Can you make a love potion?”, Pocari Sweat, fleece anything, wearing anything long to bed, Spaghetti Napolitan
Abilities: Phoenix is a practicing witch who worships Apollo and Ares. She can cast spells and make potions and with the consent of her deities harness any of their abilities. Phoenix is often manipulating sunlight to help her plants grow or to have it constantly shine on someone she doesn’t like. She can cast curses with the help of her deities, seen when she suggest she can curse one of her classmates with the plague or when she says she’ll curse a male athlete to under-perform.
Besides her magic she has a major green thumb, making greenhouses out of old water jugs and having a mini garden of herbs in her room. She’s an athlete, participating in soccer, softball and wrestling, she has won championships in wrestling twice and three times in softball, while having to give up soccer because she kept hurting people. She speaks English, Japanese and Tagalog but the last one is only at a level where she can say a few words before giving up and speak English.
Phoenix is a pescatarian which can be easy since her parents are both from island nations so she knows how to make a lot of seafood dishes.
Background: Phoenix Maki was born on July 22 1990 to Satsuki Maki and Maria Josefa Dominguez. Satsuki and Maria broke up almost a year after Phoenix’s birth. Both struggled with money, Satsuki worked odd jobs while Maria joined the Navy.
Maria inadvertently abandoned Phoenix due to constant deployments but put 75% of her salary in a bank account for when Phoenix turned 13. Maria died when Phoenix was 12 after a commanding officer spiked Maria’s drink and Maria had a severe allergic reaction. Due to her parents never being married, Phoenix is the only one who receives a pension from the military and inherited all the money Maria had saved for her daughter.
Meanwhile Satsuki raised Phoenix while working 2 jobs to cover rent and essentials for him and Phoenix. He didn’t ask for help because he was too scared to ask but he did ask his older brother Hikari to care for Phoenix in case anything happened to him. When Phoenix was 5, Satsuki saw he had no food in his refrigerator so out of desperation Satsuki went out while Phoenix was asleep and decided to rob a house. The homeowner, an older man, tried to apprehend Satsuki but in the struggle, Satsuki pushed the homeowner and the old man tripped down the stairs, breaking his neck. Satsuki was arrested and charged with burglary and manslaughter totaling to 20 years in prison.
Phoenix was placed in the care of her Uncle Hikari, a beekeeper, and his wife Peyton Valentine, a music producer.
When she was 11 Phoenix became interested in witchcraft when she started collecting crystals. Hikari allowed Phoenix to practice after teaching her how to handle matches, lighters and blades.
At 13 Phoenix began to worship Apollo after he sent a flock of ravens to follow her. A year later she began to worship Ares after she started doing sports. Phoenix also began to see her father in prison by herself and would put $150 a month into his prison commissary account after seeing that he had lost a lot of weight.
When she was 16, Phoenix got a job as a waitress and three months into her job she put a patron in a chokehold after he smacked her backside. She was fired and decided that she would work with her uncle selling bee products. That same year Phoenix got her pet ball python she named William.
That’s about it. I don’t wanna drag it on with irrelevant stuff besides the basic stuff about her family and the fact that a sun god and a war god are living in her house.

*Snow and sunshine au questions*: Does Solveig feel bad that she has no father and how does she learn it in the first place? Will Solveig ever meet her grandparents and/or uncles from her father's side? I think they'll consider her not worthy because she's born a girl :// right?
She kinda notices it, but it doesn’t really click until Anna gets pregnant with Agnes, and everyone is talking about Kristoff becoming a father. She approaches Elsa about it one night when she’s unable to sleep. She askes if all people have Papas, or only some. Elsa sees where the conversation is heading immediately and starts treading carefully. She explains that, yes, everyone has a Papa. Then Solveig asks where her Papa is.
Elsa at first thought about not telling Solveig right away. But she decided it wouldn’t be fair, so she wraps Solveig up in her arms and explains that her Papa died before she was born. Solveig, being only four at this point, wondered when he’ll be back. Elsa swallows hard and tells her that people who die don’t come back.
Solveig is quiet for a moment, then asks if he was a nice man, like Uncle Kristoff. Elsa has to bite her tongue pretty hard because Johannes was nothing like Kristoff. She tells her daughter a half-truth: that he was smart, and witty, and bold. That he was a nice enough man. Solveig asks if she misses him, and this time Elsa tells the truth: no, she doesn’t. She explains softly that she married Johannes for reasons that weren’t for love, like her Aunt and Uncle. She got on fine with Johannes, but she didn’t love him. Not in the way she loves Anna, or Kristoff, and especially Solveig. She is sure to let Solveig know that everyone might have a Papa, but people don’t need a Papa. Sometimes they don’t even need a Mama. What’s important is having people around you who love and care for you.
Solveig hugs her Mama tight after that and says she’s happy having just a Mama, especially having her Mama as a Mama.
---
Solveig does meet her grandparents from her father’s side eventually, but not until she’s older. There’s not a huge rush from either side to meet with the other. Even though the alliance between the Aplines and Arendelle was important - and important enough that the King of the Aplines wouldn’t ever dare treat Solveig badly in Elsa’s presence - it’s not like she’s really all that important to the Aplines in terms of the family hierarchy. With Johannes being the third son, and his elder siblings had plenty of kids of their own, that put him pretty far down on the list of inheritance, let alone any of his own kids. Solveig wouldn’t have much of a claim to anything in the Aplines, even if she had been born a boy. She is however, Arendelle’s heir. And her blood connection to the Aplines basically replaces the loss of the marriage.
So of course she does eventually visit the Aplines with her Mama. The Apline Islands is an archipelago of medium to small islands further south. They’re mountainous, mineral-rich, and good farming land. They’ve also been benefiting greatly from the Industrial Revolution, and have a number of new, “modern” inventions, buildings, and transportation systems that seem straight out of science fiction. Solveig is amazed by it, and Elsa is at first worried that her daughter might decide to stay longer with her other family. The royal Apline family are welcoming, show off all the great things about their nation, and are thoroughly pleased with Solveig’s growth and education thus far. They’re a little concerned about her hand, which by this point had been lost, but her magic more than makes up for that.
But thankfully, to Elsa’s relief, once the trip was over and they had set sail on their journey back to Arendelle, Solveig let out a long, wistful sigh and confessed she couldn’t wait to get back home. Arendelle was a much more peaceful place to be, and while she liked meeting her family, she admitted she liked her Arendelle family more.

Would it be terrible if I kept doing this: popping onto WordPress once a year, for a week, just to chirp energetically about the things I’d done the previous year, before disappearing into the aether? Who would sanction me? Other than myself, of course, but I think that I have enough things to distract my conscience. My annually-updated reading blog hardly takes precedence over my other responsibilities and the reparations that have swallowed up my life.
I know that I was due one more blog post in January 2019, about reading stats being compared across the years. How convenient it is that that is exactly what I shall be doing now, here in January 2020.
My ideal posting schedule for 2020 will be as follows:
2019 Books I have read and my 10 favourite ones (right now! Oh, happy day!)
2019 Reading Statistics (1/11)
Reading Statistics: 2013-2019 (1/18)
Goal-setting for 2020 (1/25)
This was the system I tried to implement last year. Two out of three posts completed is still a failing mark. And goodness knows if I will manage to stick to that schedule this year, let alone what happens after those posts. That’s every Saturday for January settled. In previous years I used to do everything in one big post and that was great, like, very cathartic, but posts had gotten more and more unwieldy.
This is such a heartening beginning to a blog post: complete abandonment to the four winds. No commitment! Just my own satisfaction. In 2020, forget overpromising, we are lackadaisically mentioning that we have some ideas that may or may not push through.
I read 126 books in 2019! You can view the complete list: here. It’s the second least number of books I’ve read since I started documenting my reading habits in 2013. I’m not really surprised since I spent most of the year gathering data in the field or studying. More on that in succeeding blog posts.
Previous year-end reading posts are here: 2013 | 2014 | 2015 | 2016 | 2017 | 2018 a b|.
My Ten Favourite Books from Those I Read in 2019
The Sparrow and Children of God by Mary Doria Russell
In 2019, humanity finally finds proof of extraterrestrial life when a listening post in Puerto Rico picks up exquisite singing from a planet that will come to be known as Rakhat. While United Nations diplomats endlessly debate a possible first contact mission, the Society of Jesus quietly organizes an eight-person scientific expedition of its own. What the Jesuits find is a world so beyond comprehension that it will lead them to question what it means to be “human”.
Kid Gloves: Nine Months of Careful Chaos by Lucy Knisley
If you work hard enough, if you want it enough, if you’re smart and talented and “good enough,” you can do anything.Except get pregnant. Her whole life, Lucy Knisley wanted to be a mother. But when it was finally the perfect time, conceiving turned out to be harder than anything she’d ever attempted. Fertility problems were followed by miscarriages, and her eventual successful pregnancy plagued by health issues, up to a dramatic, near-death experience during labor and delivery. This moving, hilarious, and surprisingly informative memoir not only follows Lucy’s personal transition into motherhood but also illustrates the history and science of reproductive health from all angles, including curious facts and inspiring (and notorious) figures in medicine and midwifery. Whether you’ve got kids, want them, or want nothing to do with them, there’s something in this graphic memoir to open your mind and heart.
The Raven Tower by Anne Leckie
For centuries, the kingdom of Iraden has been protected by the god known as the Raven. He watches over his territory from atop a tower in the powerful port of Vastai. His will is enacted through the Raven’s Lease, a human ruler chosen by the god himself. His magic is sustained via the blood sacrifice that every Lease must offer. And under the Raven’s watch, the city flourishes.
But the power of the Raven is weakening. A usurper has claimed the throne. The kingdom borders are tested by invaders who long for the prosperity that Vastai boasts. And they have made their own alliances with other gods.
It is into this unrest that the warrior Eolo–aide to Mawat, the true Lease–arrives. And in seeking to help Mawat reclaim his city, Eolo discovers that the Raven’s Tower holds a secret. Its foundations conceal a dark history that has been waiting to reveal itself…and to set in motion a chain of events that could destroy Iraden forever.
Lent by Jo Walton
Young Girolamo’s life is a series of miracles.
It’s a miracle that he can see demons, plain as day, and that he can cast them out with the force of his will. It’s a miracle that he’s friends with Pico della Mirandola, the Count of Concordia. It’s a miracle that when Girolamo visits the deathbed of Lorenzo “the Magnificent,” the dying Medici is wreathed in celestial light, a surprise to everyone, Lorenzo included. It’s a miracle that when Charles VIII of France invades northern Italy, Girolamo meets him in the field, and convinces him to not only spare Florence but also protect it. It’s a miracle than whenever Girolamo preaches, crowds swoon. It’s a miracle that, despite the Pope’s determination to bring young Girolamo to heel, he’s still on the loose… and, now, running Florence in all but name.
That’s only the beginning. Because Girolamo Savanarola is not who—or what—he thinks he is. He will discover the truth about himself at the most startling possible time. And this will be only the beginning of his many lives.
A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine
Ambassador Mahit Dzmare arrives in the center of the multi-system Teixcalaanli Empire only to discover that her predecessor, the previous ambassador from their small but fiercely independent mining Station, has died. But no one will admit that his death wasn’t an accident—or that Mahit might be next to die, during a time of political instability in the highest echelons of the imperial court.
Now, Mahit must discover who is behind the murder, rescue herself, and save her Station from Teixcalaan’s unceasing expansion—all while navigating an alien culture that is all too seductive, engaging in intrigues of her own, and hiding a deadly technological secret—one that might spell the end of her Station and her way of life—or rescue it from annihilation.
Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me by Mariko Tamaki, Rosemary Valero O’Connell
Laura Dean, the most popular girl in high school, was Frederica Riley’s dream girl: charming, confident, and SO cute. There’s just one problem: Laura Dean is maybe not the greatest girlfriend.
Reeling from her latest break up, Freddy’s best friend, Doodle, introduces her to the Seek-Her, a mysterious medium, who leaves Freddy some cryptic parting words: break up with her. But Laura Dean keeps coming back, and as their relationship spirals further out of her control, Freddy has to wonder if it’s really Laura Dean that’s the problem. Maybe it’s Freddy, who is rapidly losing her friends, including Doodle, who needs her now more than ever.
Fortunately for Freddy, there are new friends, and the insight of advice columnists like Anna Vice to help her through being a teenager in love.
Tiempo Muerto by Caroline Hau
Two women meet on the island where they shared a childhood. One is looking for her mother, the other her yaya. One is an Overseas Filipino Worker, the other an heiress. In an old bahay na bato haunted by scandal and tragedy, secrets and ghosts, the women find their lives entangled and face the challenge of refusing their predetermined fates and embracing their open futures.
Gideon the Ninth, The Locked Tomb #1 by Tamsyn Muir
The Emperor needs necromancers.
The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.
Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead bullshit.
Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as necromantic skeletons. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy.
Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won’t set her free without a service.
Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon’s sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die.
Of course, some things are better left dead.
Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City by K. J. Parker
This is the story of Orhan, son of Siyyah Doctus Felix Praeclarissimus, and his history of the Great Siege, written down so that the deeds and sufferings of great men may never be forgotten.
A siege is approaching, and the city has little time to prepare. The people have no food and no weapons, and the enemy has sworn to slaughter them all.
To save the city will take a miracle, but what it has is Orhan. A colonel of engineers, Orhan has far more experience with bridge-building than battles, is a cheat and a liar, and has a serious problem with authority. He is, in other words, perfect for the job.
Trick Mirror: Reflections on Self-Delusion by Jia Tolentino
Trick Mirror is an enlightening, unforgettable trip through the river of self-delusion that surges just beneath the surface of our lives. This is a book about the incentives that shape us, and about how hard it is to see ourselves clearly in a culture that revolves around the self. In each essay, Jia writes about the cultural prisms that have shaped her: the rise of the nightmare social internet; the American scammer as millennial hero; the literary heroine’s journey from brave to blank to bitter; the mandate that everything, including our bodies, should always be getting more efficient and beautiful until we die.
Thanks for bearing with me. Keep a weather eye for the next post.
[Reading] My 10 favourite books from 2019 Would it be terrible if I kept doing this: popping onto Wordpress once a year, for a week, just to chirp energetically about the things I'd done the previous year, before disappearing into the aether?

19 Spooky Things That Happened In 2019 - And The Links To Watch Them Happen!
365 days.
That’s as long as it takes to change the world.
This year, we saw Greta Thunberg take on world leaders, we bore witness to the Time’s Up movement flex its muscles, and we hit share on the first picture of a black hole. Oh, and your favourite blog was started!
And so, as 2019 draws to a close, chances are your Twitter feeds, your TV shows and your conversations will be crammed full of everyone’s own personal take on the year. On top of that, the final few days of the year will also be chock full of existential crises based on every resolution you failed to meet in the last 12 months.
(Until next year, driving licence...)
But regardless of the politics, and aside from those promises you swore to keep all-year-round, there are some events that simply go ignored. Like the spooky ones.
The ones about haunted baby monitors.
The ones about prophecies claiming this pope will cause the end of the world.
And the ones about the Loch Ness Monster’s Chinese cousin.
I wanted to change that. So, today’s article is going to take you through the 19 spookiest thangs that gon’ don’ went down in 2019.
For the last time this year: let’s get spooky!
#1 - A Nanny Cam Picks Up Paranormal Activity In Michigan (March)
It might sound like it’s fresh from the screenplay of some forgotten Paranormal Activity movie, but this tale has the evidence most ghost stories are scraping the bottom of the barrel for:
It may have seemed like a typical night for this Michigan-based family, but the usual practice checking on their child via the baby monitor took a turn for the terrifying.
The footage clearly shows a strange, transparent figure move in front of the crib, and the child watch it. But then, the baby cries, something that has been deduced to a sharp scratch found on its arm shortly after the incident.
An affliction from someone beyond the grave, perhaps?
Apparently so: the parents traced the history of their home back to a former tenant who committed suicide in the apartment.
Here’s the footage:

#2 - Lorraine Warren - The Inspiration Behind The Conjuring Universe - Dies (April)
This year we lost a paranormal icon.
Lorraine Warren was one half of the ghost-hunting dream-team that investigated some of America’s - and even some of the UK’s - most haunted places and people.
The inspiration behind the ever-sprawling Conjuring universe, Lorraine was possibly the most famous and established medium in the world, using her gift to communicate with spirits entangled in cases such as the Amityville haunting, the Perron family farmhouse, and the Devil Made Me Do It court case.
Whether it's the silver screen bringing their stories to the fore, or their haunted museum, there’s no doubt that she was pretty damn awesome.
#3 - A New Haunting Is Sighted (And Filmed) At Myrtle’s Plantation (April)
Myrtle’s Plantation may already be haunted by the dark history of slavery in the USA, but it is also famed for its less metaphorical paranormal activity: haunted mirrors, the screams of dying Civil War soldiers, and a young girl sporting a green turban are just a few of the things to see and hear at this Louisiana tourist spot.
Yet despite being opened in 1796, only this year was a new haunting witnessed.
And filmed.
https://video.dailymail.co.uk/preview/mol/2019/04/25/6516021902273592342/636x382_MP4_6516021902273592342.mp4
The story goes that a young couple were enjoying a romantic visit to the BnB - well, I say romantic, it’s a former plantation - and saw 3 pairs of small, ghostly feet scurry across the floor. When they reported this claim to the staff, it connected yet another dot regarding the paranormal portrait of the area.
It turns out that the ghosts of children are often reported by visitors and staff alike, whether it’s floral fragrances passing through the air, or being poked and touched by invisible hands. This aligns closely with claims that numerous children have died on the plantation as a result of Yellow Fever.
#4 - Zak Bagans’ Haunted Museum Is Temporarily Closed Due To Extreme Paranormal Activity (June)
When you gather enough haunted items together in one building, you expect some spooky-ass shit to go down, right? Well, that’s exactly what happened in June.
Zak Bagans - the mastermind behind hit TV show, Ghost Adventures - has his very own museum dedicated to the supernatural in Las Vegas, and had to shut down an exhibit citing danger to the staff.
Housed in this exhibit was ‘the Devil’s Wheelchair’, supposedly the chair David Glatzel sat in when exorcised as a part of the Devil Made Me Do It court case.
Concerns were first raised when a plug near the chair was yanked out of the wall by an invisible force, and a nearby door swung open in a similar fashion. Following this simple activity was an intensified level of activity which began to threaten the tour guides explaining the exhibit to visitors.
No less than 5 tour guides broke down crying for seemingly no reason whilst near the exhibit, and one even collapsed.
#5 - A Ghost Is Seen In The Love Island Villa (July)
This summertime TV hit might make the headlines for all the wrong reasons, but this story seemed to slip under the radar.
Joanna Chimonides, a rather controversial contestant from this year, claimed a blonde ghost visiting the sleeping contestants and bending over their beds was a common feature of their evenings.
It is what it is. (It’s a reference to the show, ok, I’m down with the kidz.)
#6 - Yet Another Sighting Of The Loch Ness Monster Is Reported (July)
The summer wasn’t just full of young men and women swanning ‘round Majorca “looking for love” - it was also chock full of sightings of Nessie.
Thanks to the warm, calm weather gracing Scotland in July, there was a spike in claims of seeing the beast as anything breaking the surface of the Loch was far easier to see. In fact, by the end of the month we’d had the 12th sighting of the year!
#7 - A Bar’s CCTV Catches A Ghost Doing, Uh, Ghost Things (July)
This year, the Idaho based brewery, Milner’s Gate, shot to viral fame having caught paranormal activity on its CCTV. The staff witnessed strange goings on in the dead of the night via their security footage, and uploaded it to YouTube to show what really happens after dark.
You can clearly see several barstools being pulled out from underneath a bar by an invisible force.
But someone could’ve been hiding underneath the bar, surely? Unfortunately, there was no space for them to hide.
Debate might still rage in the comments section of this YouTube video, but it is an interesting watch - whether you believe, or not.

#8 - Hobo Hill House Gets Put On Airbnb (August)
Boutique hotels, country cottages, and cosy nooks in picturesque places tend to dominate the listings on AirBnB (AND drive up the prices). But taking in a coastal view isn’t the only option anymore: Hobo Hill House, a 109 year old house tucked away in Jefferson, bears the label ‘haunted’ instead.
Bought in 2017 by its current owners, this house supposedly features a variety of ghosts, and the resulting paranormal activity has amounted to the possession of the 8 year old daughter and their beloved family dog acting cray-cray. Within 7 months they’d got the hell outta there.
Most visitors cannot last the night.
#9 - Another Nanny Cam Sees Another Ghost (August)
It’s been a busy year for ghosts haunting and harassing small infants: in LA, a Nanny Cam app picked up movement of something unseen to the human eye. This brand used coloured splotches to indicate movement, and going by the human-shaped splotches by the crib, this suggested something - or someone - was shifting around the room.
However, the company behind the baby monitor cited poor setup and situation of the camera as the cause of this not-so-supernatural activity.
On top of that, anxious parenting of newborn babies is evidently a common cause of such claims. The debunking of this haunting continues…
#10 - Owlman Is Spotted Once Again - And Caught On Camera (August)
The Owlman of Mawnan Smith might sound like a crappy read you’d pull off a charity shop shelf, but it's actually a legend dating back to the 1920s. The original tale follows 2 teenage girls who saw a half-man, half-owl creature sitting on top of a church tower. The same year, another pair of teens saw the exact same thing.
But it was in the heat of this summer that Owlman struck once again. In August, a paranormal investigator captured footage - and a single photo - of what he claims is the Owlman. Yet beyond the classic blurry picture of something allegedly paranormal is the added experience of snapping the shot:
His team felt this surge of energy, and immediately sensed that this, uh, thing, was demonic. The camera then broke, and scratches soon appeared all over their bodies.
#11 - The Best Footage Of Bigfoot To Date Is Captured (August)
Yes, yes, I know.
Every other day someone is claiming to have witnessed and filmed the greatest evidence of the greatest monster and mystery this planet faces and omg guys drop everything and sub to my youtube channel look its not me in a gorilla suit i swear…
But this year, groundbreaking footage did indeed capture some crazy shizz.
Well, on reflection, ‘groundbreaking’ seems far-fetched for something that smells like yet another hoax. So, what do you think?
https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/9750471/best-bigfoot-sighting-video-woods/
#12 - Pool Parc Asylum Is Closed Off To The Public (September)
North Wales is home to many things: gorgeous views, even more gorgeous accents, and a haunted mental asylum.
(These are a few of my favourite thingggggss.)
Naturally, its a magnet to UK-based paranormal investigators who are in search for the next viral video. However, in the Autumn, the owner of the 200 year old manor discouraged visitors from touring the historic building, citing danger from the building’s structural integrity, and the increasingly violent paranormal activity that goes on inside.
Investigators typically witness strong activity, claiming stones behind thrown and bruises to the face are common occurrences for those looking to catch a glimpse of the supernatural.
#13 - The Chinese Loch Ness Monster Is Spotted For The First Time (September)
Is there room for 2 lake-based monsters on this list? Well, there’s gonna have to be.
This year a long, black creature was filmed swimming in the Yangtze, producing a viral video that all investigators of the mysterious seek.
Was it simply a piece of material floating in the water? Was it merely an over-sized sea snake that was subjected to pollution?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4xRokjH2tkn
Yet despite the debunking, this is not the first time a creature of similar stature has been seen in China. In 1987, a similar monster was seen in the Kanas lake, and 30 years later, a creature even raised its head out of the water, sparking yet another viral video.
#14 - The Haunting Of The Harper Family (October)
October - obviously the spookiest month of the year - had a spooky start with the Harpers, a family who finally uncovered the truth behind the paranormal activity they experienced in their house.
Their North Wales home has witnessed it all - and I mean it all. Banging noises echoing through the walls, the smell of rotten flesh wafting through the rooms, and items going missing are just a few of the most common occurrences the family have been subjected to.
But on top of that, the mother of the family even watched a small army in clothing and armour from a few odd centuries ago march past the house. This was the hint they needed to trace back their house to Flint Castle, a nearby historic tourist destination.
It is believed that their house is situated on the location of battles gone-by.
This was confirmed in October as footage picked up a large glowing orb floating through their living room. And if you look closely, you can even see a face in the orb.

#15 - Major British Political Moments Happen On The Spookiest Days Of The Year (October, December)
Friday the 13th? Check.
The 31st October? Hell yeah.
It doesn’t get much spookier than that. Throw in some politics, stir 3 times clockwise, and say the magic words:
“Get Brexit done!”
Oh, just fuck off.
#16 - Paranormal Activity 7 Is Announced (November)
If you thought we’d seen enough of Katie and Kristi’s fucked-up childhood, then you were wrong! This year, yet another film was announced for release in 2021 cause why not drag out possibly the weakest series of film the horror genre has ever had to choke down.
As you can see I’m not pissed off, or confused by this decision at all.
Nope.
#17 - Elon Musk’s Spacex Satellite Livestream Captures Footage Of A UFO (December)
Livestreams of outer space are littered with claims of activity that go beyond the realms of our understanding. And it’s for this reason that aliens and UFOs make the headlines everyday based off this footage alone.
But it was this footage captured up in mid-December that was picked up by media across the world.
The livestream showed a white or silver disc-like object stream past a Falcon 9 rocket in a curved trajectory.
“Ah, yes, an upside down bowl flying through the sky - this isn’t news!”
Well, it kinda is, actually. It’s the curved bit that really got people talking; only an intelligently controlled being could make such a movement, sparking the speculations the supernatural revels in.
https://www.express.co.uk/a7b91874-827b-495d-b3cd-db25fe7f2976
#18 - Another UFO Is Spotted Above Las Vegas (December)
Only a few days before Christmas, a white orb was seen passing over Las Vegas, travelling at approximately 1000 miles per hour, and emitting blue and white lights. Not a sound was produced as it flew overhead.
This suspiciously silent craft is yet another sighting witnessed in Nevada, a hotspot for sightings of the supernatural and alien-kind. It is believed to be as a result of the proximity to Area 51.
https://www.express.co.uk/news/weird/1221270/UFO-news-aliens-Christmas-sighting-update-latest-las-vegas-Nevada
“Okay, so it’s yet another UFO sighting… But what’s so special about this one in particular?”
This footage was captured just after the release of official footage taken by the American Navy which shows a glowing UFO. The film shows the pilots stating that there were multiple UFOs there, rousing suspicion among those obsessed with conspiracy theories.
#19 - A Prophecy Claims The World Will End With This Pope (December)
We finish our round-up of the spookiest goings-on of this year with a prophecy dating back nearly 1000 years. Okay, yes, the Mayans seemingly predicted the world would end, like, every year, but this one bears some rather uncomfortable coincidences that can only confirm its potential reality.
And it all starts with this bloke called Archbishop Saint Malachy.
900 years ago, he travelled to Rome from Ireland to give an account of his affairs when he had a vision. He saw the 112 names of the future popes.
His prediction for the 111th - the former pope - was known as “Gloria Olivae”. The 111th pope is Pope Benedict XVI, and this fulfils the prophecy as the Order of Saint Benedict is the “glory of the olives”.
So, there’s a chance his predictions could be correct, right?
"In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church there will reign Peter the Roman, who will feed his flock amid many tribulations, after which the seven-hilled city will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people. The End.”
Our current pope’s father is called ‘Peter’, and despite moving to Argentina, he was born in Italy.
This is a problem because it is firmly believed that this pope will resign in 2020. So, as our final pope, this means the world might end in 2020.
Great.
So - What’s Your Verdict?
Which event do you think deserves the top spot of totally-terrifying-thing-o’-2019?
And do you really think the world’s gonna end in 2020?
Fancy hearing about more spooky shizz in the new year? Then you best be hitting follow.
