Crystal Palace Field Trip Part 1: Walking With Victorian Monsters
Tumblr media
The Crystal Palace Dinosaurs take their name from the original Crystal Palace, a glass-paned exhibition building originally constructed for a World's Fair in Hyde Park in 1851.
In 1854 the structure was relocated 14km (~9 miles) south to the newly-created Crystal Palace Park, and a collection of over 30 life-sized statues of prehistoric animals were commissioned to accompany the reopening – creating a sort of Victorian dinosaur theme park – sculpted by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins with consultation from paleontologist Sir Richard Owen.
The Palace building itself burned down completely in 1936, and today only the ruins of its terraces remain in the northeast of the park grounds.
Tumblr media

Six sphinx statues based on the Great Sphinx of Tanis also survive up among the Palace ruins, flanking some of the terrace staircases. They fell into serious disrepair during the latter half of the 20th century, but in 2017 they all finally got some much-needed preservation work, repairing them and restoring their original Victorian red paint jobs.
Tumblr media
———
…But let's get to what we're really here for. Dinosaurs! (…And assorted other prehistoric beasties!)
The "Dinosaur Court" down in the south end of the park still remains to this day, displayed across several islands in a man-made lake. Over the decades they've been through multiple cycles of neglect and renovation, and are currently cared for by the London Borough of Bromley (Crystal Palace Park Trust are due to take over custodial duties in September 2023), with promotion and fundraising assistance from organizations like Historic England and the Friends of the Crystal Palace Dinosaurs charity.
Just about 170 years old now, the Crystal Palace Dinosaurs represent fifteen different types of fossil creatures known to 1850s Victorian science, with only three actual dinosaur species featured. Although often derided for being outdated and very inaccurate by modern standards, they were actually incredibly good efforts at the time, especially taking into account that the field of paleontology was still in its very early days.
They also just have a lot of charm, with toothy grins and surprisingly dynamic poses.
Unfortunately on the day I visited in early August 2023 most of the statues were heavily obscured by plant growth, both on their islands and on the sides of the paths they can usually be viewed from. Since I'd seen images from about a month ago showing things being less overgrown, this was probably just some unlucky timing on my part coinciding with some explosive summer foliage growth.
Tumblr media
The first island on the trail features a few Permian and Triassic animals which were only known from fragmentary remains in the 1850s. These "labyrinthodonts" were recognized as having similarities to both amphibians and reptiles, and so were depicted with boxy toothy jaws, warty skin, stumpy tails, and long frog-like back legs.
Tumblr media
Today we'd call these particular animals temnospondyl amphibians, specifically Mastodonsaurus, and we know they were actually shaped more like giant salamanders with longer flatter crocodilian-like jaws, smaller legs, and long paddle-like tails.
Tumblr media
———
Tumblr media
Somewhere in the foliage beyond this specific "labyrinthodont" there was also supposed to be a pair of dicynodonts, but I couldn't see much of them at all and didn't manage to get a remotely visible photograph.
Tumblr media

These Dicynodon are depicted as looking like sabre-toothed turtles complete with shells. That was fairly speculative even for the time, but considering only their weird turtle-beaked-and-walrus-tusked skulls were known it was probably the best guess Hawkins and Owen had. Today we know these animals were actually synapsids related to modern mammals, but Victorian understanding considered them to be a type of reptile.
Modern reconstructions of dicynodonts have a slightly different face shape, along with squat pig-like bodies and semi-sprawling limbs. They may have had fur, but currently the only known actual skin impressions from the genus Lystrosaurus show leathery bumpy hairless skin.

Wonderland
Wonderland is a song about a love that feels so enticing it draws her in against her judgment. Taylor uses Lewis Carroll's Wonderland as a metaphor for love with a famous person and they try to hold on the chaos that ensues from going public. Get a cup of tea, this is long. I feel the lyrics, meaning and context of this song are overlooked because Taylor had a friend who likes the classic novel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
22 March 2011 - Taylor visited an Alice and Wonderland themed store on Portobello Road, London. (2011 timeline)
25 October 2012 - Taylors Rolling Stone Article is titled "Taylor in Wonderland" and talks about her apartment.
Over 18 months of remodeling, Swift gave the condo a heavy dose of well-funded OCD whimsy. The ceiling is arranged in multiple motifs – billowing curtains here, a painted indigo night sky there. In one corner, under hanging crystalline stars, sits a giant bunny made of moss. He’s wearing a hat. “It’s a whole Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland structure here,” she says, welcoming me the next morning. “It’s what the inside of my brain looks like, essentially.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5 November 2012 - One Direction is on the cover of Wonderland Magazine holding puppies. The article talks about a book deal from a fanfic about Harry, death threats to girlfriends, abuse of their mothers, relationships breaking down due to abuse by fans and absolute ferver about them at that time. It includes the quotes:
"Anyone is welcome to stare into the eyes of Madness" and "The boys show a similar stubbornness when I suggest, perhaps, if they were a little less public about their girlfriends (boybands like Take That, for example, were always encouraged by management to be perennially single in public), then maybe their partners would not have to endure so much attention. “That’s shit,” says Louis. “That means you don’t lead a life that’s real. You wouldn’t be able to go out anywhere publicly with your girlfriend.”
2 December 2012 - a month after the article Harry and Taylor walked in Central Park. They had been on/off in private for months at that point and seemingly together for the last 4 months.
17 November 2014 - Taylor is on the cover of Wonderland Magazine, she talks about 1989 and Twitter Trolls.
In 2015 Taylor indicated that all the songs of romance songs on 1989 were about on person. While Taylor has never said who that person is songs like Style hint. Thank you @cntfightmydemonsthyknowhowtoswim for the shopping photo and timeline help! In her March 15 2013 vanity fair article (the one that said harry chased her for a year before they dated and also pointed mentions she was born in 1989) Taylor said:

Live Performances
Taylor has only performed it 6 times, each has a reason. When 1989 was release Harry’s IG went black and white and stayed that way for nearly 2 years. He posted a colour photo within a week of each Time this song was played.
May 15, 2015, Las Vegas Rock in Rio, first played. After performing Tenerife Sea with Ed Sheeran. This first performance was 2 days before the 2015 BBMAs when Taylor knew she would be seeing Harry. (Harry colour IG post)
May 20, 2015, Bossier City Louisiana (1989 Tour), on Harry and Taylors anniversary. It was followed by the Clean Speech she referred to the 2015 BBMAs 3 days earlier and 'where you should be' which Harry later referenced in Woman. (Harry colour IG post)
June 6, 2015, Pittsburgh (1989 Tour) - the day after the One Direction Hiatus story first broke. (Harry colour IG post).
June 20, 2015, Cologne, Germany (1989 Tour). Day of Taylors letter to Apple and 1989 not to be on Apple music. (Harry colour IG post)
September 29, 2018, Houston (Reputation Tour) - day after Haylor anniversary of Begin Again Paris weekend
April 21, 2023, Houston on (Eras Tour) Taylor introduced it and said it has a"twisted kind of Alice and Wonderland vibe" day before Peace Ring Anniversary
Original Lyrics
Along with 1989 TV Taylor released the original Wonderland Lyrics 27 October 2023. They are undated. I think it may have been started in 2011 when Taylor was in London and finished for 1989. The original Lyrics further indicate this song is about Harry:
"We danced down hallways, too in love to think straight" rather than" became "So, we went on our way / Too in love to think straight" Hallway's being common theme in Harry and Taylors songs about each other.
"Screaming you're the king and I'm the queen," rather than "All alone, or so it seemed." King/Queen is a common reference Taylor has used to indicate the muse is British. This is also on 1989 in Blank Space: "Stolen kisses, pretty lies, you’re the king, baby, I’m your queen"
"Colors I'd never seen twisting around me" became "I felt your arms twistin' around me." Colours are also a Haylor theme, on 1989 with OOTW: "The rest of the world was black and white / But we were in screaming color.”
"Didn't I tell you don't listen to them?" to "Didn't they tell us don't rush into things?" this reminds me of Slut! "I said it might blow up in your pretty face / I'm not saying do it anyway / But you're going to" because they went public and it did blow up.
"I turned around to find you and you were nowhere to be found / There was screaming and lightning / And I haven't been back since I had to leave you there..." became "I reached for you, but you were gone / I knew I had to go back home / You searched the world for somethin' else." this is similar to I Knew You Were Trouble: "And he’s long gone when he’s next to me", This Love: "And you were just gone and gone, gone and gone" and Blank Space: "Screaming, crying, perfect storms, I can make all the tables turn".
Tumblr media
Lyrics
[Verse 1] Flashing lights And we took a wrong turn And we fell down a rabbit hole You held on tight to me 'Cause nothing's as it seems And spinning out of control
The first verse sets the scene of a relationship that is in the public eye and two people trying to hold onto their love in chaos. Specifically not a hidden relationship.
Flashing lights - It's easy to overlook how very out of control the fans and paparazzi were about Haylor and One Direction in 2011 - 2013. Having dated in secret for sometime when they did go public the focus was intense. When they dated again it was hidden, which is evident in both of their discographies.
I Know Places: Lights flash and we’ll run for the fences
Is It Over Now?: Flashing lights, oh Lord, let’s fast forward to three hundred takeout coffees later
Paris: Let the only flashing lights be the tower at midnight in my mind
One Directions Perfect "And if you like cameras flashing every time we go out oh yeah"
Tumblr media
Fell down a Rabbit Hole is similar to IWYW "We're a crooked love in a straight line down"
Trying to hold onto each other in chaos is also in:
Run: "Say you’ll never let them tear us apart and I’ll hold onto you while we run"
New Years Day "You squeeze my hand three times in the back of the taxi"
Dancing with our hands tied "Oh, and you held me close Oh, how was I to know?"
The Archer: Help me hold on to you
Harry for One Direction Story of my Life "The way that I been holdin' on too tight"
Harry for One Direction Olivia "Don't let me go"
[Pre-Chorus] Didn't they tell us "Don't rush into things"? Didn't you flash your green eyes at me? Haven't you heard what becomes of curious minds? Ooh, didn't it all seem new and exciting? I felt your arms twistin' around me I should have slept with one eye open at night
The Pre-Chorus tells of a decision to go public with a previously private relationship. At the time Harry and One Direction were incessantly asked invasive questions about dating, which Harry was increasingly uncomfortable answering. Shortly before 1D provided a list of banned questions which was not well received.
Slut! implies that Harry had wanted to go public and Taylor cautioned against it " Taking your chance / It's a big mistake / I said it might blow up in your pretty face / I'm not saying do it anyway / But you're going to / And if they call me a slut / You know it might be worth it for once"
Harry's green eyes are mentioned in many songs.
[Chorus] We found Wonderland, you and I got lost in it And we pretended it could last forever (Eh, eh) We found Wonderland, you and I got lost in it And life was never worse, but never better (Eh, eh)
The Chorus encapsulates this relationship, one they are drawn to, see the peril in and proceed anyway because they love it. Taylor has other lyrics that refer to forever not coming true:
Wildest Dreams: Nothing lasts forever, but this is getting good now
Cowboy Like Me: Forever is the sweetest con
False God: We were crazy to think / Crazy to think that this could work / Remember how I said I'd die for you?
Pretending is also a theme, I think this about suspending judgement to stay in a Lavender Haze, or set aside concerns about the potential reputational damage or bullying caused by fans:
I Knew You Were Trouble: "Pretend he doesn’t know that he’s the reason why your drowning"
Wildest Dreams: "Say you’ll see me again even if it’s just pretend"
Delicate: "Sometimes when I look into your eyes, I pretend you’re mine all the damn time"
Death By A Thousand Cuts: "Chandelier’s still flickering here ‘cause I can’t pretend it’s okay when it’s not"
Paris: "Stumble down pretend alleyways, cheap wine, make believe it’s champagne"
[Post-Chorus] (Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh) In Wonderland x3
The post chorus Eh's sound so similar to Rihanna's "Under my umbrella, ella, ella, eh, eh, eh" which is actually similar in theme, Umbrella is about a famous couple being there for each other, Wonderland is feeling like that didn't happen.
In the period One Direction was incessantly asked for a celebrity crush (while he was actually dating an exceptional famous dream girl) Harry often said Rihanna, if he answered. Rihanna was a safe choice, she wasn't single, she has spoken highly of Harry. Also she sat in front of him at the infamous 2013 VMAs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Verse 2] So, we went on our way Too in love to think straight All alone, or so it seemed But there were strangers watchin' And whispers turned to talkin' And talking turned to screams, oh
Fame and focus of people outside the relationship is a theme. I can't repeat enough how much this song is about a public relationship:
Dancing with our hands tied "People started talkin', puttin' us through our paces" and
I know places - "Somethin' happens when everybody finds out / See the vultures circling, dark clouds / Love's a fragile little flame, it could burn out / It could burn out" and "I can hear them whisper as we pass by, It's a bad sign, bad sign"
…Ready For It?: Touch me and you’ll never be alone
So It Goes…: But when you get me alone, it’s so simple
Harry for One Direction Where do Broken Hearts Go: "Mind is runnin' in circles of you and me / Anyone in-between is the enemy"
[Pre-Chorus] Didn't they tell us "Don't rush into things"? Didn't you flash your green eyes at me? Didn't you calm my fears with a Cheshire cat smile? Ooh, didn't it all seem new and exciting? I felt your arms twistin' around me It's all fun and games 'til somebody loses their mind But darling
The reference of a Cheshire Cat smile is a double meaning, both referring to Harry's smile and where he grew up, Cheshire, England. Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland, was also born in Cheshire. Calm my fears similar to the line in NYD “squeeze my hand”
Tumblr media
[Bridge] I reached for you, but you were gone I knew I had to go back home You searched the world for somethin' else To make you feel like what we had And in the end, in Wonderland, we both went mad Oh
The song ends on a sad note, Taylor realises the relationship is too much for her so she gives it up. Her muse can't replace her and they never get over it. From Slut! and Say Don't Go in the 1989 Vault Taylor wanted more assurance in the chaotic storm of them going public. From Harry's TBSL and Little Freak we can infer that he wasn't ready for it, 19 and too famous too quickly.
Reached for you but you were gone
Message In A Bottle: I’m reaching for you, terrified
I Knew You Were Trouble: And he’s long gone when he’s next to me
I Know Places: Just grab my hand and don’t ever drop it
New Romantics: Please take my hand and please take me dancing
Willow: I’m begging for you to take my hand, wreck my plans, that’s my man
Harry's As it was: I want you to hold out the palm of your hand / Why don't we leave it at that?
You searched the world for something else
Is it over now? "You search in every model's bed for somethin' greater, baby"
Harry's As it was: When everything gets in the way / Seems you cannot be replaced / And I'm the one who will stay, oh
We both went mad: the song ends on 'we both went mad' which is a double meaning of having lost themselves in this relationship and the Cheshire Cat saying "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad." in Alice in Wonderland. Madness is a theme in Harry and Taylors songs about each other:
Blank Space "Magic, madness, heaven, sin" and "They'll tell you I'm insane"
Say Don’t Go: "The waiting is a sadness fading into madness"
IDWLF "Baby, baby, I feel crazy Up all night, all night and every day"
Hit's Different "Or have they come to take me away? To take me away"
Harry for One Direction If I could Fly "I've been going out of my mind (I feel it I feel it) Know that I'm just wasting time"
Harry's Kiwi "She's driving me crazy, but I'm into it (Oh)
Wonderland also has a taymoji pack which refers to king of my heart, the rose/thorn Haylor theme.

Oneshot 1/3
April 2015, and Lloyd's class is on a trip to alton towers and he's looking in a self-made journal full of theme park information and sharing information which eventually begins to bore people, so he reluctantly slumps into a newspaper reading about current affairs which eventually does bore him too until they arrive. The entire school's there. Year 11 took x sector, year 10s took oblivion in a shared negotiation with the y11s, year 9 took galactica, year 8 took the dark forest and y7 had forbidden valley. Lloyd rode the rides, saw year 10s lose their bottles on oblivion. Eventually Lloyd enters sub terra after noticing nemesis's eye blinking and they go on the ride but as the ride begins, and the leg ticklers go off, Lloyd's doesn't but rather his shoulder is 'tickled' instead and when the ride drops, Lloyd's gone. Instead he's in the midway talking to the actual nemesis who gives him the kitsune miraculous and essentially activates his powers. Walking out a new person, Lloyd moves carefully and we enter our intro.
It's now September 2016 and Lloyd's powers are causing problems academically so his parents decide to send him to the academy in London. He's heard the rumours and as he's entered inside he sees the school. The students have a different collective mind, huddled in groups, orderly and soulless with him called into the headmaster's office and asked to wait for him to arrive. He notes lots of worrying signs before the demon headmaster puts Lloyd to sleep, but his unwillingness makes him disappear into the midway (remember norma khan's walk to Pauline in ep9 and the weird blueish place, it looks like that currently.) Suddenly gorb appears and is able to speak in the midway saying it can't keep him from the danger forever and he knows how to save himself, referring to the forger name directly... he speaks an incantation and leaves through a door onto the London streets where someone pulls him into an abandoned warehouse much to the dismay of his autistic panic tendencies.
He meets the outcasts: a group of four other people who each have an undesirable outcome which was a gay boy, a girl who likes punk and centi, years before her appearance in the custom series. The leader of the pack who is too determined welcomes the new person, telling them to call him Lloyd before asking him what he knows of the headmaster's plans, to which he says a bunch of stuff he noticed in the room, but hides that gord made an elevator sound before he left as no one would understand it.
Sensing danger looming, claire rifts to London whilst the headmaster asks how his electrical device is doing to which he says three more people to fully power it, revealing multiple students feeding electrical currents into the machine...

hey!! 🍁(not even sure this is the right emoji) coming in for a ship😌 my name is raven, I'm 5'2 with (faded) orange hair and blue eyes. I'm a stubborn introvert who enjoys plants, animals and anything related to the sky. I love rock music and horror movies.
I look shy at first but once I'm comfortable I'm insane (*insert that "not me being goofy lol🤪" meme*)
yeah..... i think thats it!! thank you :)
Ok. Okay. Hear me out here.
Tumblr media
Evgeni Kolpakov!
Again. I know nothing about the character and have never seen the movie (so ig I’m behind on my Oscar filmography xd). But. From what I’ve seen he’s sweet, loving, and has a mischievous side (assuming we’ve all seen the gifs of him flashing his coworker, Dwayne).
Tumblr media
So as we all (or maybe not all) of us know, Evgeni is a security guard working in London— and he’s also Russian, you should know that, too. He’s a pretty chill guy most of the time, but he also goes for what he wants without hesitation.
And the moment you walked into the museum [Is he working as a security guard at a museum??? Let’s just say he is for plot purposes], passing him at the entrance with a polite nod and only a soft question about where the latest exhibit is; apparently some sort of sky-themed art event where there were rare paintings of blue, gray, and starry midnight set up on display. You’d heard in passing and had nothing better to do, but you were surprised when the security guard caught your attention more than the art you came for.
Evgeni may be bold, but he’s also kind of nervous. He spends at least twenty minutes second-guessing what he’s about to do, especially on his lunch break when he has nothing else to think about.
When he comes back, he immediately starts checking the cameras to see where you are. Dwayne, used to his antics, only rolls his eyes. You’re not in the museum, though; at least, you won’t be in a few minutes. You’re leaving. Entranced by the smile on your face, he bolts out of there and rushes down to the parking lot, trying to act somewhat normal.
He spots you just as you’re entering your car, and luckily for him, you hesitate. When he actually gets up to the window he sees that you’re texting; not a partner, he hopes. He knocks on the glass lightly, making you jump. He didn’t expect to hear the rock music blaring from your speakers before you muted it, but he comments with a soft laugh, “Interesting choice.”
Once you roll your window down, he’s profusely apologizing for scaring you. “I’m deeply sorry, miss, I just needed to ask you something.”
“Oh? Of course sir, what can I—“
“Please,” He interrupted softly, “You can call me Evgeni.”
Your beaming smile made his heart flutter. “Okay. Evgeni. What can I do for you?”
He couldn’t stop his own smile, or the flush that spread across his cheeks. “Would it be alright if I took you for coffee?”
A smile so big it nearly reached your ears graced your face. “Y-yeah. More than alright. I’d like that.”
Evgeni swore he fell in love with you right there.

London Open House 2021 Highlights
What with Covid, a couple of Septembers spent travelling researching books, a year giving a tour for Tokyo bike and another year opening my own house for London Open House, it's been ages since I actually visited anything myself. This year the festival is bigger than ever, and goes beyond just the weekend with a whole nine days of tours and events.
I've trawled the programme and picked out a few of my highlights
Saturday 11 September Blackheath Quaker Meeting House Architect: Trevor Dannatt A new one to me! Small 1970s concrete Grade II listed building with a raised lantern. Designed to fit in with older buildings in the conservation , and make the most of the split-level site. Book here
Cheeky plug, if you're in Blackheath, why not do my Blackheath Walking Guide to modernist houses—available here).
Sunday 12 September Central Hill Estate Architect: Rosemary Stjernstedt It's been at least 8 years since I visited Central Hill. There were rumours of it being demolished back then, but now it's really under threat. I've no idea (well I do) why Lambeth doesn't value its post-war housing schemes more. Central Hill was designed by Rosemary Stjernstedt for Lambeth Borough in 1963. The tree-lined housing estate on the ridge of Central Hill & Crystal Palace, incorporating open spaces, views over London, gardens and a sense of community. It's definitely worth a visit. Book tickets here for a lunchtime walk here
Saturday 11 and 12 Sunday September Cressingham Gardens Architect: Ted Hollamby Another Lambeth scheme, and another also earmarked for redevelopment, is Ted Hollamby's wonderful Cressingham Gardens. Low-rise high-density estate located next to Brockwell Park. Innovative design with pioneering architectural elements & echoing natural topography. Under threat of demolition by Lambeth council. Tours provided of estate and rotunda.
Events, including walks of the estate and an exhibition, run Saturday and Sunday next weekend. Register here
Saturday 4 September Page High Estate Architect: Dry Halasz Dixon Partnership The what estate? I've not heard of it. It was designed by Dry Halasz Dixon Partnership in 1975. According to the website: Page High is a hidden jewel of post-war London social housing, a 92-home rooftop village in Wood Green. High above the hue and cry of the High Road, Page High (Good Design in Housing award, 1976) is a model for social housing today. The walk is today, and there's only capacity for 10 so we may be too late for this now, but I'm putting it on the list for exploring on another day. More details here Image via the Page High Estate residents association.
Saturday 4 and Saturday 11 September South Norwood Library Architect: Hugh Lea Also under threat of demolition (a bit of a theme here eh?) is the South Norwood Library. The purpose-built library is a fine example of brutalist architecture. Designed by Hugh Lea, Borough Architect for Croydon, in 1968 the main volume shows Miesian influence with an abundance of natural light, interrupted by a concrete cuboid. Open for visits this Saturday and next. Register here
Sunday 5 September Walter Segal Self-build Houses Architect: Walter Segal There's a good book out about Walter Segal which I must buy: Walter Segal Self-built Architect by Alice Grahame and John McKean published by Lund Humphries. Walters Way is a close of 13 self-built houses. Each is unique, built using a method developed by Walter Segal, who led the project in the 1980s. Houses have been extended and renovated. Sustainable features including solar electric, water & space heating. There are several events running on Sunday 5 September. More details here
Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 September Fitzroy Park Allotments If you've done my Fitzroy Park walk, you would have past the allotments, which are ordinally locked and not open to the public. Next weekend is an opportunity to the largest allotment site in the borough of Camden at approximately 3.5 acres. The lower part of the site was acquired by local government after the first world war as a result of requests by local people for the provision of secure growing space. Fitzroy Park Allotments – one of North London's best-kept bucolic secrets – is located on the south-west slopes of Highgate West Hill, alongside the much-cherished and well-known public open space of Hampstead Heath. Register here

Note
my mum always used to say it was a shithole but we only went for the theme park and the arcades <3 i mesn if i had the option to stay here or england, i would choose here bc we cool <3 😂
i went to Edinburgh on my own at 19, and got so scared???? i'd probably be okay travelling alone but i'm just so anxious lmao 🤣 i'd travel in the middle of england if any kpop groups went there. though i live in glasgow and we're a big city with two largeish arenas, they would fill it 😂 though hampden park is more a football stadium but we do get big artists in it sometimes <33 hated growing up in my emo phase and hearing WORLD TOUR and they would include just london and my 14 year old self would be so hurt <//3
i shall keep my fingers crossed!!!
yeah that's what I mean all I remember is pleasure beach and I remember it being pretty great so 😌 maybe just cuz it was nice enough to not rain lol, also not to be super grim but when said friend is no longer around I think you definitely romanticise the memories a lot more so. yeah thanks chelsea for making blackpool a magical place in my mind even though it really isn't agsjdgdjd
I want to move to Scotland myself so that speaks volumes lol, Ireland would be in the running if it weren't extremely expensive especially in Dublin and very isolated basically everywhere else. Galway is beautiful though, just again, I like having some money left after rent 😭 I know Glasgow to not be the nicest area so I guess we're together in that, I'm from Leeds which would be lovely without the crime, drug abuse and insane levels of homelessness I'm sure 😌 BUT YEAH I'm buzzing MCR even came here even though we got stuck in Milton Keynes of all places (they apparently don't have data signal there like ever lmfao) and I got to see Ghost here as well but for concerts I usually have to travel to Manc, which is fine cuz Manc rules but still!! Got to see Dan and Phil at Town Hall in 2018 but have to go to Manchester to see Dan in September lmao if anything people are coming here less ah

September 2, 2021
By Amy Kaufman
(Los Angeles Times) --  Hayley Mills always knew Walt Disney played a formative role in her life. After all, the studio founder was the one to cast the then-unknown Brit in 1960’s “Pollyanna,” offering her a seven-picture deal that would make her one of the most famous child stars in the world.
But it wasn’t until she found herself inside the Disney archives five years ago that Mills realized just how profoundly her identity had been shaped by him. In 2016, during a visit to the Burbank lot, the actor was invited to explore three boxes that contained hidden treasure — previously unseen correspondence between Mills, her parents and Walt himself.
The Disney she saw reflected in the notes did not exactly resemble the genial father figure who’d once toured her around his theme park and gifted her a gold charm bracelet. He did not want her in any “heavy dramas or sex involvements” as a teenager — the starring role in Stanley Kubrick’s “Lolita” was quickly shot down — and refused to let Mills’ parents “run the show.”
Back in London, Mills told her two sons about what she’d unearthed on the lot. For years, she’d mulled the idea of writing a memoir about her unique childhood. Now, her kids insisted she try again: “You really must do it, mum, before you forget your name.”
“I didn’t even know if I was capable of it,” Mills recalls. “But my eldest son, Crispian, said he would help me come up with a proper plan. And that made all the difference in the world, because I realized I wasn’t going to be alone.”
Even at 75, Mills is continuing to come to terms with how her girlhood reverberates — hence the title of her book, “Forever Young,” which comes out next Tuesday. In the memoir, she writes of “sleepwalking” through her early career, only now taking her “first real chance to understand and take ownership of the strange and remarkable things that happened to me.”
Mills focuses on her long struggle to shed the saccharine “Pollyanna” image, calling to mind recent Disney stars like Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato who rebelled against the squeaky-clean Mouse House. And yet despite a bout with bulimia and a battle to keep her childhood wages, Mills somehow remains unembittered — an outlook she credits, in part, to “Pollyanna.”

The best songs of the 1970s
“What started out as a joke has turned into a disaster!” - Stu Nahan, Rocky IV
So my employment has me in my car a lot, which means I’m listening to the radio a lot. If I’m not listening to a podcast or baseball game through my phone I also have SiriusXM, which of course has a plethora of musical options. I gravitate to the 70s and 80s channels because, well, of course I do.
Something else about me you may or may not know is that I love ranking things. I have a Note on my phone I’m regularly accessing that is nothing but different types of rankings.
Thus, you can imagine my excitement when the 70s on 7 station announced a listener-voted Top 700 Songs of the 70s countdown over Labor Day weekend. It was a fun listen. They went through it twice over the four day weekend, and I was laboring much so I heard much.
It prompted me to think: What are my top seventy songs of the 70s? Surely I wasn’t going to come up with a top 700. After all, some in that list were real stinkers. But seventy? No problem. And indeed, it wasn’t hard to come up with that many songs. The hard part was narrowing it down. And once I did, there were still so many songs on my list I had enough for more lists, so I expanded it to 140, then 210, and... well...
I’m about to give you the authoritative list of the 350 best songs of the 1970s. I originally put out a Top 70 list on Facebook a few weeks ago. Much that of that list remains the same, with a few changes. But now there is much more. I’ve divided these into five “volumes” of seventy songs. They are my picks, but I welcome your feedback, because what’s a good set of rankings without debate and discussion.

Tiger Strikes Asteroid New York is pleased to present Night Scenes, a group exhibition curated by Sun You and Dominic Terlizzi. Featuring works by Richard Bosman, Ethan Greenbaum, Matt Jones, Christina Yuna Ko, Larysa Myers, Sarah Palmer, Alan Reid, Vanessa Gully Santiago, Ginevra Shay, Yuri Yuan and Monsieur Zohore.
During Covid lockdowns, I was taking a lot of walks at night. I became entranced with the city after dark—illuminated by artificial light and the melancholy, sexy energy of the nocturnal. I feel like now is a good time for a show featuring artists who work with themes of landscape, night, darkness and illumination.
