First People Step Aside!
Saturday 22nd June 2024 – Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The city of Halifax was founded in 1749 when Lt General Cornwallis arrived with over 1,100 settlers and enough troops to set-up a garrison. This action was in response to the French establishment of Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island (where we were yesterday).
Arriving in Halifax today at 8am, Viking Star ‘parked’ opposite the Georges Island Lighthouse, which happens to be an identical twin to the Louisbourg Lighthouse that we never got to see yesterday on our excursion (a) because there wasn’t enough time and (b) because it was shrouded in scaffolding!
Today though, we had booked the ‘free’ Hop-on-Hop-off sightseeing bus.
However, far being the usual ‘Big Red Bus’ type of tour, ours turned out to be on board a fleet of original 1960s London Routemaster buses, all different colours, running at 15-minute intervals all day, exclusively for Viking passengers! We had all been to Halifax before but it was a lovely, almost nostalgic tour with an on-board guide giving the narration.
They make much of the ‘First Peoples’ thing nowadays and about how the land is shared with the local Mi’kmaq peoples, blah, blah, blah – but well they might because that original settlement by Cornwallis back in 1749 was itself in breach of an earlier agreement with the Mi’kmaq actually living here and yet today the population of the city is more than 500,000. I wonder what the Mi’kmaq think about that.
Anyway, after doing a full 90-minute circuit, we headed for a coffee shop and then Sally went shopping while Andrew, Angie & I went to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.
It was an excellent museum, with some fine ship models, including this one of the first Mauretania in her 1930s cruising white.
There was also a featured section on the massive explosion in 1917 that destroyed a vast section of the city when the SS Imo, a Belgian relief ship, collided with the SS Mont-Blanc, a French munitions ship loaded with 4,000 tons of high explosives.
The resulting explosion was the biggest man-made explosion at the time, killing over 2,000 people, injuring over 9,000 and laying waste to a huge area of the city.
It was also by ships from Halifax that, in 1912, the largest number of bodies were recovered and following the sinking of the Titanic. There’s a section in the cemetery here where they are buried.
There were many recovered artefacts on display, including this deck-chair.
A pleasant walk can be had along the Boardwalk from downtown all the way to the Cruise Terminal and there is a wealth of bars, restaurants, shops and ‘playgrounds’ for kids and adults alike.
This private yacht ‘Samsara’ also arrived today and on looking it up, I discovered that the owner is none other than Harry Potter author J.K.Rowling! Available for charter, Samsara sleeps 12 and will cost you $1.1m a week including the crew of 28!

Totally agree about Kristie’s parents, plus they fly quite a bit as a fam going to madrid is just like them going to New York or kansas to see their kids. But to be honest I don’t think they’re gonna go to madrid just because they just flew to London, they’re there to see Kristie and I’m sure do sightseeing stuff there, not to fly around and watch Sam play (Kmew is the wag, not her fam). I’m sure they are only traveling for 1-2 weeks max (they do have jobs and Pat back home lol) so flying to madrid seems like wasting a day they could be in the UK (just on the traveling). That being said I wouldn’t even bat an eyelash if they showed up in Madrid. 😂
Kind of have disagree with you here tbh. They are in London to see both Kristie and Sam. And one of Kristies favorite things to do is watch Kerr play soccer. Also it's a trip to Spain to do some sightseeing there as well. I don't think they came to London just to take Kristie to Harry Potter world or to see Buckinham palace. So I do think théy will end up in Madrid.

Last Day Abroad
Platform 9 3/4
Sarah gif
Victoria and Albert Museum + Sarah
Disney Store
I’m a princess
Selfridges
Harrods
What a day! It’s our last day abroad, can you believe?? (Insert Jonathan Van Ness voice here)
While it’s been the trip of a life time, it’s beyond weird we’re heading back to the states. On the one hand, I’m very sad to be leaving since that means heading back to reality, on the other hand, the reality of constant travel hasn’t been exactly what I imagined either. Lots of emotions and thoughts swirling away in my noggin this evening, but that’s a rant for another time. On to what we did today!
This morning we headed first to King’s Cross train station to visit Platform 9 3/4 as Sarah has never been. We puttered around the shop and Sarah got some good pics of the platform itself. Next, we went to Selfridges, I’ve watched parts of the show and love it, so I wanted to see the actual store. It’s GORGEOUS. So, again, we puttered around there and walked along, took some pics at the Disney store, and continued on towards Hyde Park and Harrods. Same with Selfridges, I’d heard a lot about Harrods but never been, so I wanted to check it out. Again, very beautiful, very expensive, very lovely. We then walked to the Victoria and Albert Museum (after seeing Kensington Palace yesterday, how could we not??) and enjoyed looking at the art and the shop there.
Then we went back to the apartment for a bit, we did a lot of walking and just wanted to rest our legs. We popped back into town for dinner, our last in the Europe, and walked around enjoying the sites, sounds, smells and general vibes that London has.
I think, in our travels, we’ve come to know a lot more about each other, about what we want, both as individuals and as a couple, but also learned about how we operate as human beings outside of our usual surroundings. That’s some pretty heavy learning to do in a few months’ time, but I feel it’s been worth it.
Tomorrow, we travel from London to Iceland and from there onto Chicago. So there will likely not be a post update tomorrow as we’ll be tired and jet lagged.
Also, that being said, I’m not sure what shape this blog will take once we’re back in the USA. Will we continue to travel? Heck yes. Will it be for several months at a time? Highly unlikely, but who’s to say? I think it’ll be fun to continue the blog, maybe not as a travel blog only, but more of a way to keep track of what’s going on in our lives through pictures, videos and life updates. But I digress, we’ll just have to see what tomorrow brings!!
Till then, thank you so much for reading along and being a part of this journey with us, it’s been life changing!
Ta for now! -G
P.s.
We know we still haven’t done our Wales and Scotland posts yet...we will do them, I promise you! Till than just go back and look at all the great gifs of me;)

Long-awaited
Jason Todd x Reader
A/N: Super self-indulgent because my family is being (redacted). Perhaps I should do more of these travel fics.
Genre: PG-13
Travel restrictions are lifted! After being stuck in Gotham for god knows how long, Jason wants to get out. He figures you need the break too.
The UK, here we come!
The first thing on the to-do list - watching musicals. Jason is mesmerized by the story-telling and vocals. His favorite musical has to be Wicked.
No way he was going to miss out on the book hopping and neither were you. He read the entire book of Austen standing up in a vintage bookstore while you breeze through a mystery novel.
Food. The must-visit Borough Market! You don't know how Jason can finish three plates of Seafood Paella in one sitting. You push that at the back of your head as you chomped on your fourth doughnut.
Typical sightseeing, Jason wonders to you how Bruce would look on top of the Tower Bridge dressed as the big Bat.
Sporting events! You and Jason were just in time for the annual Wimbledon tennis event! Although you couldn't manage to get the tickets in the main courts, you were satisfied with watching your childhood idols practice before the matches. Jason notes to bring Alfred here one day.
Traveling outside of London was fun too. The countryside was breathtaking and Jason has half a mind to drop his vigilante responsibilities and retire here. The idea sounded most appealing to you.
How could we forget the Harry Potter Studio! Coming here as a child was a different thing where your family only came because of you.
With Jason who was equally excited as you, how could you not enjoy the experience? The two of you washed the butterbeer cups as souvenirs.
Time passes by when you're having fun! The last few days were dedicated to getting souvenirs for the bat family.
Giving credit to Jason, some were well-thought-out gifts. Jason got Alfred a high-end tea set and mittens for the kitchen.
"Only the best for Alfie!"
Others, well... you could tell Jason was getting a laugh out of it. You had to admit though, it was pretty funny. Dick's present had to take the cake.
Jason refuses to admit to his older brother that he nearly forgot his present on the way to the airport as he presents Dick with an assortment of cereal boxes with the strangest of flavors.
Needless to say, Alfred was not pleased with the encouragement of Master Dick's abysmal eating habits.
***
A/N: Short headcanon to clear the headache I have with my family! What better way than to do it with Jason! Hope you have enjoyed it!

Twice/Hawks Anon: If mythical figures like the Nine-Tailed Fox can manifest as curses, then can the same apply for pop culture icons? Would horror movie characters like the Human Earthworm manifest as curses? (Especially as a result of nightmares from children who saw scary movies they weren’t supposed to watch?) What about Dementors
“w& Voldemort from the Harry Potter series? Like you, I’m also curious about curses from around the world. Does Greece have curses in the shape of the three-headed dog Cerberus & the Gorgon Medusa? Does a Banshee curse wander around Ireland? Does Jack the Ripper stalk the streets of London? Does the Loch Ness Monster surface
every now and then in Scotland? I wonder if foreign jujutsu sorcerers will ever appear in the series. Do they have different styles of exorcism? Different ranking systems for both sorcerers & curses? Different structures & ways of running things? Does each country have their own “great sorcerer families” like Japan has the Zen’in?
Hmmm I def think pop culture icons would manifest as curses but I don’t think they would be particularly powerful. I’m pretty sure longevity plays a big role in how strong curses become (in fact if iirc I think longevity plays a big role in why Sukuna is such a powerful curse 🤔 or maybe I’m confusing it with Fate lore lol). So if Dementors were to become curses I think it would take a while for them to manifest and actually become a serious threat.
...OR maybe not!
Not to ripoff American Gods but I think it would be cool if there was conflict between Old Curses that have deep lore and have taken decades to manifest and newer Curses that are able to come into being quickly thanks to the rise technology and social media. Like imagine Slenderman and other creepy pastas manifesting as curses lol.
I think it would be interesting if there was a dichotomy between Old Curses that mostly work alone (Jogou, Hanami and Dagon being exceptions) and New Curses that would regroup and work together. Like do Curses even have their own sub-culture/society or anything? What if Old Curses prefer to remain solitary whereas New Curses would favor cooperation in order to survive? (I guess that would mean Jogou’s goal would align more w/ New Curses? 🤔 oops sorry I’m getting carried away XP)
.
I think we’ll be seeing Jujutsu sorcerers from other countries soon given recent events in the manga and the fact that Yuuta, the protagonist from the prequel manga, is currently studying abroad and his return has been teased for a while (Yuuta pls come back soon we need you!! ;w;).
I def think other countries have their own big clans/families and I imagine their structures must be different though I’m not knowledgeable enough to be able to imagine/theorize how differently they would operate.
How are diplomatic relations like between international branches of jujutsu sorcerers? Would they reflect real-life political dynamics? Since I’m anime-only, I’m not sure how the exchange event between the Tokyo & Kyoto branches of Jujutsu Tech would be like or how you’d organize one at a larger scale, but imagine there being an
international exchange event. Not sure if it would be held every 4 years in a different location like the Olympics or yearly in the same secret location. But imagine our trio sightseeing & making new friends! Would they meet foreign half-curse half-humans? Would sorcerers outside of Japan understand what a big deal Sukuna or Gojo is?
👀👀👀 I love the idea of there being a Jujutsu Olympics! I’m pretty sure Gojo (and other super OP sorcerers) would be banned from participating 😂
I think it would be interesting if other countries were more “encouraging” of demi-curses (that’s what I’m calling half-humans/half-curses yes it’s a SMT Nocturne reference). Overall I think it would be awesome to see the cultural differences manifest in curse techniques and jujutsu practices.
Idk abt Sukuna but I know for a fact that Gojo is considered a big deal worldwide. In fact iirc Gojo is considered the strongest jujutsu sorcerer in the world.
In the manga & prequel manga they mention that there are 16 special grade curses and 4 special grade Jujutsu sorcerers, it’s not specified if this number is worldwide or Japan only. I would imagine that these numbers only take into account Japan BUT if this number is worldwide it would indicate that Japan must have a serious concentration of cursed energy compared to the rest of the world (which could be linked to some fuckery Sukuna did 1000 years ago).
#asks#jjk asks#jjk#jujutsu kaisen#jjk hcs#new/old curses au#yep im making a tag for that au cuz i'd love to talk more abt it#thx for the ask! :D#twice/hawks anon#i hope this is readable i got carried away lol#long post

Driving Me Wild
Fandom: Harry Potter Pairing: Cedric Diggory x Male!Reader Summary: Cedric pure and sweet, totally wild for you Word Count: 1,222 Request: “could you do a Cedric Diggory imagine with “you were in my dream last night.”” A/n: I fall in love for Cedric then I remember he’s DEAD, baby boy deserves better
“You’ve never been to Muggle London?”
Wide eyes as you stared at your boyfriend, it was the nearing of the end of your fifth year at Hogwarts. Cedric shakes his head and shrugs his shoulders as he fixed your blue and silver tie.
“Come stay with me for the summer, I already agreed I was going to the Quidditch World Tournament, if I’m meeting your family in August, you’re meeting my family too.”
“Alright, I’ll have to send a letter first to my family, they have to know,” Cedric laughs as you grinned at him.
You were definitely lucky to be with Cedric, he has boys and girls fawning over him. You weren’t surprised at all, Cedric has a heart of gold. In your eyes, he was adorable, sure you have to tutor him in some subjects but he was always determined. Him being good looking was just a bonus.
You two were a well-loved couple within Hogwarts, despite many whispers of people gushing over you two, you and he were in it for the long run.
“I have to go,” You responded, “Study date before our potion exam?”
“I’ll hold you to that.”
The pair of you grinned before lightly pecking him on the lips, his smile turned into a grin as you swung your legs over the bench and leaving the great hall. Cedric was a man of many things, a whipped man is one of them.
Being with you was a fantastic start to the summer, Cedric loved your family as did your family love him. Coming from a pure-blood family, he’s only explored the magical world but you got the best of both worlds.
One magical parent and one muggle parent, Cedric was fascinated with all different objects around your house, he found your bedroom like a little toy shop as it was full of foreign objects to him.
The first week, you took him out to multiple dates, the cinema to the bowling alley. To simply going to the gelato shop for some ice cream, even though you were aware that the wizarding world had ice cream for some reason Cedric claims it’s different.
Walking down muggle London was different, a whole new experience.
Holding hands, you wearing an oversized striped burgundy and white flannel over a white shirt whilst he sported double denim, which you hold him against, though he likes to claim he could be the only person who could pull off double denim.
“In your dreams love,” You teased, as you gently pushed his face to turn the other way, “Come on, if we get on the double-decker, it’ll give us a tour of London.”
Cedric loved every minute being with you, from the crazy shopping to the wild activities to the incredible sightseeing. Holding hands and kissing in the London Eye, as Cedric gush about how pretty London looked from such a height. Within a week, he’s seen it all, you’ve taken pictures of him and found various other older wizards mingling around London who happily take wizard pictures of you two at the tourist attractions.
A treasured wizard picture was of you two kissing in the London Eye with Big Ben in the background.
You took still muggle pictures of him in the London Museum, claiming with a face like his, he was art too.
“You’ll be history, Ced,” You say, waiting for the picture to form and showing it to him, his chin resting on your shoulder with his arms wrapped around you.
“I don’t think I would be,” Cedric confessed, “I’m still confused to what I want to do when I’m older.”
“Quidditch player,” You suggested, “You look pretty good out in the field.”
“Well, whatever I do, I hope I still have you by my side.”
“You’ll always have me,”
“I know.”
You two headed back home, after having dinner out. It was dark but your family trusted you two to get back home safely, you did have a phone if you ever got lost. Luckily, you didn’t live too far away from the centre of London. Taking the bus journey and walking the rest home was enough.
The dark summer night upon the two of you, giggling like school children, trying not to fall on the way home as Cedric tries to jump on your back. Whilst you were given dirty looks for being two boys in love, you had each other’s back and that’s all you care was Cedric.
Kissing up against fences and walls on the way home, scrunching your nose up as he returns to action, staring into his eyes and biting your lips.
“You’re adorable.”
“Could say the same thing about you.”
You two had it good, everything was working in your favour. His hands moving up your back under your shirt. His cold hands compared to your hot skin. Pushing him away, rolling your eyes bt a fond smile was unmissable as you jump on his back.
His hands holding you up as he spins you around, under the street lights. Having fun despite just being you two. Cedric drops you, landing on your feet.
“Weak,” You exclaimed, “I carried you for five minutes before giving up!”
“Maybe, I rather see your face,” Cedric offers as you looked at him with a gaping mouth, scoffing.
“Alright, smooth man,” You teased, allowing him to put his arm over your shoulder.
You both walk down in the middle of the road of your neighbourhood. No cars or peering eyes to ruin your walk home. Just you and him, with your mp3 player blasting hits you’ve missed through the year you were out at Hogwarts.
“You know, you were in my dream last night,” Cedric confessed, you looked at him with a raised eyebrow.
“Well, elaborate?”
You both stopped, noticing how you were at your home. He faces you and your home, you looked at him expectedly. Your hands intertwined with yours, falling in love with you over again as he stares into your eyes. The corner of his lips quirked upwards into a soft gentle smile.
Soft laughter escapes him, shaking his head slightly, “I dreamed a future with you, married and all.”
“With kids, we’ve adopted?” You asked with a smile that melted his heart.
“No, not yet,” But he doesn’t deny that he does want kids, “Fresh out of Hogwarts maybe, two or three years after graduating. You’ve got a job and I’ve got a job.”
“Married,” You breathed, “We’re a little young to talk about marriage, don’t you think? We’re only sixteen, well, you’re almost seventeen since your birthday is in September.”
“Most wizards marry young,” Cedric proposed, “And you drive me wild.”
Your heart was beating ten times louder and faster, “So do you, but, we’re only going to be in the sixth year, ask me again after our seventh year.”
Cedric was probably blushing, pressing his lips against yours. Passionate, slow and full of meaning. A kiss like that was everything, both your minds pausing their train of thoughts because all you cared about was each other.
No matter how much he drove you crazy in both ways, mad and madly in love. You couldn’t see any other person in your future but him, no one could have a love for you like Cedric does.
“I’ll hold you to that.”

Fic: Graham Norton (Keanu x F!Reader)
Summary: based off Keanu’s first appearance in Graham Norton and the ‘I never’ bit.
Pairing: Keanu x F!Reader
Author’s Notes: So this has been sitting on my laptop for a while. I’m not all that happy with it and Keanu went so ooc in this, but that the hell! I’m gonna let you guys be the judge of it! Thank you @caryled for being my beta on this.
Wordcount: 2485
Warnings: Mentions of alcohol, but otherwise pretty safe.
You’ve spent months saving money for this trip because it was your dream. You didn’t even remember when you started wishing you’d spend one of your birthdays in London, but it was finally happening now, on your twentieth-first. You thought it was fitting - such a momentous occasion marked by the trip of your life.
You and your best friend Sadie arrived a couple of days before New Year’s Eve of 2011 and would spend ten days in London, including your birthday. You planned to do so much on that trip that when you shared your ideas with Sadie, she nearly asked for a refund on her ticket.
The two of you began with all the regular tourist stuff, but there were also a few things that would be so special to you, like visiting some of the Doctor Who locations and doing the Jack the Ripper Walking Tour in Whitechapel, because you were a true-crime enthusiastic.
Along with all the sightseeing and other attractions, you and Sadie went barhopping every night, or better saying, pub hopping. Not only you because Sadie wanted to enjoy being able to legally drink since she wasn’t turning twenty-one until September, but you also wanted the best London experience you could get.
And to make sure that happened, the two of you made a pack in the airport of your hometown to assure neither of you would miss a unique opportunity by being embarrassed or afraid.
Whenever one of you said I dare you, the other had to do it or face the consequences, which would probably be an even more embarrassing or terrifying prank so the one being challenged might as well just suck it up and do the first dare already. So far, neither of you had backed down from a dare and you had all the pictures to prove it. As well as the hangovers.
On the morning of your birthday and Sadie woke you up at the crack of dawn, jumping on your bed and scaring the shit out of you. She had a higher alcohol tolerance than you, so even though both of you drank around the same amount, you had a pounding headache, while she looked fresh and wide awake.
“Rise and shine my dear! It’s your birthday! You’re officially legal! How does it feel?” She asked, bouncing on your bed.
“I hate you!” you groaned, feeling your stomach queasy. Your mouth tasted like something had crawled inside and died. “It’s six in the morning!”
“I know! I could barely sleep! I wanted to give you your present!” She announced, voice high-pitched with excitement as she shoved an envelope in your hands. “Open it!”
Grumbling in annoyance, you sat up and rubbed your eyes, trying to force yourself into consciousness. Fortunately, Sadie took pity on you and brought over some water and a bottle of aspirin.
You popped two pills before finally opening the envelope under Sadie's giddy gaze. You found two tickets to something called The Graham Norton Show that would happen that night.
“Thanks, Sadie,” you said, trying to force a happy smile. You could tell that she was obviously excited about this.
“Turn it around,” she asked, still smiling and unfazed by your less than enthusiastic response.
You obeyed and when your brain registered the name of one of the guests, your eyes went wide with shock.
“OH MY GOD!” You screamed looking at her. “Are you serious?”
“Yes!” She grinned. “Happy birthday, bitch!”
You looked back at the tickets, still in disbelief. Your favorite actor, Keanu Reeves would be a guest at the Graham Norton show tonight. You were going to share a room with Keanu, breathe the same air, maybe you’d get to ask a question? Was Graham Norton the kind of show with audience interaction?
To be honest, you didn’t really care. You were just happy to see him in person. That would be a dream come true. A photo and an autograph would be just a cherry on top, but not an actual need.
“You’re the best friend ever!” You told Sadie, pulling her into a bearhug, hungover completely forgotten.
You spent the rest of the day beaming with excitement, unable to focus on anything other than counting down the hours and minutes until you finally got to see Keanu. And maybe that was a little geeky of you, but you put on your The Matrix T-shirt for the night. Not only it was your favorite tee, but also such a special occasion deserved it.
You and Sadie arrived early at the studio, but there was still a line to get in. The two of you got good seats, middle section. Of course, you wanted to be closer, but you could only imagine how much those tickets would cost.
You could barely contain your excitement when he finally came on stage, dressed in an all-black suit, his long hair touching the collar of his shirt; beard a little unkempt, but it still suited him perfectly. As you watched him, your heart hammered against your ribs and your chest felt tight, like you were struggling to breathe. You just couldn’t sit still.
So, you took a moment to force yourself to relax and control your breathing. It wouldn’t do you any good having an anxiety attack right now. You’d miss the entire show and your chance of fangirling over Keanu.
It was a good interview and you couldn’t believe you’ve never heard of this talk show before. The host was pretty funny and had great chemistry with all the guests. He gave Keanu quite a lot of attention and the comedian, Marcus, was making a lot of comments on what was said.
You found it really sweet how Keanu tried to get Emilia involved in the conversation since she was quiet for a while, something that should’ve been the host’s job. You enjoyed the easy banter the four of them seemed to share and all the new tidbits of information about Keanu you were learning that day.
When it came time for the ‘I never’ section, something that Graham had explained before the show started and invited the audience to think on really common stuff that they had never done, but everyone else might have.
As Norton walked between the rolls of seats, talking to the audience, Sadie tugged your arm, catching your attention.
“I dare you to say I never kissed Keanu Reeves,” she whispered to you with a wicked grin and you stared at her wide-eyed.
“You’re crazy! I’m not doin’ it!” You hissed, feeling your cheeks hot at the mere thought of it.
“Do you really wanna face the consequences?” she asked with an arched eyebrow and from the way she was smirking, you could tell she was planning a terrible prank if you kept saying no.
So, against your better judgment, you put your hand up, praying that Norton wouldn’t pick you. There were many other people whose hands were raised as well.
He walked right past you to talk to the girl who had never seen The Matrix and you gasped in shock. You could sort of forgive someone not having read or seen Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings, but The Matrix?
Then Norton teased the guy that never ironed a shirt and for a moment you almost sighed in relief thinking you’d be free from the embarrassment.
“How about you?” he asked, gesturing at you and you froze, nearly dropping the mic when he gave it to you. “Where are you from, dear?”
“I came here for my birthday,” you replied, voice trembling.
“Oh! Happy birthday,” Norton said with a smile. “So, what’s your I never?”
You glanced at Sadie, pleading with your eyes, but her smirk only grew, and she shook her head. So, taking a deep breath and avoiding looking over the stage, you said:
“I-uh never kissed Keanu Reeves.”
People around you were chuckling and clapping and you just wanted to hide and pretend you didn’t just say that aloud.
Against your better judgment, you glanced at the stage and your gaze briefly locked with Keanu’s warm brown eyes. You could tell he was a little flustered in embarrassment, but there was a soft, amused smile playing on his lips.
“Good try,” Norton declared, laughing. “But you never will.”
Keanu finally looked away from you when Norton returned to the stage and the show resumed with the interviews. You found it hard to keep your gaze on the guests, still too mortified and confused. You even ignored Sadie, because she was mean and you hated her a little, even if she was your best friend.
When the show was finally over, you couldn’t wait to get out, put as much distance between yourself and what happened tonight, but the isles between the seats were narrow so you had to wait for everyone else in front of you to move before you could step out.
“Excuse me, miss?” a male voice called, and you turned to see a man in all black and with a headset on standing behind you. He looked like he worked for production. “Can you come with me, please?”
You shared a quick look with Sadie, but she just shrugged, promising to wait for you outside, before you followed the production assistant.
He took you through a maze of hallways behind the main stage until he paused at a door and knocked once before opening it for you. When you stepped inside, you froze in shock at seeing Keanu Reeves up close.
“Hi there,” he smiled and offered you a hand.
You stared at it for a moment, your brain too overwhelmed to actually process what was going on. He actually giggled, ducking his head and that was what finally shook you from your stunned silence.
“Hi!” you managed to stutter your name and take his hand and you were shaking. “I’m so sorry about what I said. It was a stupid dare from a friend.”
“It’s fine, I thought it was funny,” Keanu actually patted your hand in a comforting manner, and you managed a small, relieved smile. “Cool shirt.”
You looked down at yourself and chuckled, feeling your cheeks hot.
“Thanks. It’s one of my favorite movies,” you started. “I love your movies.”
You forced yourself to stop there even if you wanted to say more. Even if you wanted to tell him how much you appreciated his work and how his movies meant to you, but you didn’t want to sound too eager and weird.
“Thank you,” he replied with a smile, looking a half pleased, half self-conscious. “Listen, I just want to make sure you were alright. You looked really embarrassed afterward and like I said, I really didn’t mind.”
That was really sweet of him to worry, especially when you embarrassed both of you in front of a huge audience and on live TV. And just remembering it made you cringe.
“Hey, come on. It’s your birthday,” Keanu said in a comforting tone, correctly deducing why you were making that face. “You should enjoy it. Happy birthday, by the way.”
“Thanks,” you managed a smile because he looked a little awkward himself as he tried to console you and that was cute. “Can I have a picture and an autograph?”
“Of course.”
You grabbed your phone from your pocket and positioned yourself next to him, snapping a couple of pictures. You checked them quickly, making sure they were good, before pocketing your phone again.
“Do you have a piece of paper?” Keanu asked, picking up a sharpie pen.
For a moment you hesitated. You did have your Graham Norton ticket with you, but there wasn’t where you wanted the autograph.
“Can you do it on my shirt?”
“Sure.”
Beaming, you shrugged off your jacket and turned his arm at him, and Keanu signed your sleeve. You glanced over and grinned when you realized that he also wrote Welcome to the desert of the real, a line from the movie.
“Thank you so much!”
He just chuckled, pocketing the sharpie. He opened the door for you, stepping out of the dressing room along with you and leading the way to a maze of hallways.
“So, what do you do?”
“I’m a majoring in English,” you replied, hands in your pocket as you walked side by side. “I’ve got one term left so I should probably start figuring out what I’m gonna do with the rest of my life.”
You had no idea why you just said that to Keanu, a complete stranger. You weren’t one to blurt out your private dilemmas. Not even to your own friends.
“Well, what do you want to do?” he asked, sounding actually curious.
“Am I being realistic or a dreamer?”
“Realistic,” Keanu replied, glancing at you.
“I want to teach,” you said with a fair amount of confidence. You already had a few internships and you knew that was something you liked doing it.
“And what’s your dream?”
The two of you had stopped in front of an emergency back exit. Keanu probably didn’t want to be mobbed by fans by going through the main entrance of the studio.
Keanu watched you as you thought about his question. It wasn’t as if you didn’t know the answer. It was just that you had never said aloud before. Not even to yourself, but you wanted to say it to him. He had been your inspiration after all. If it hadn’t been for his movies, you would have never realized how much you loved to create your own stories; how much you loved to write.
“I want to be a writer,” you confessed, and his smile shifted into something soft and understanding and it took your breath away.
“Can I offer some advice?” he said, and you nodded. “Life’s too short to get stuck doing something you don’t really love. Follow your dreams.”
You felt your heart swell with emotion at the simple encouragement because it was so full of meaning. You couldn’t even begin to tell him how much it meant to you.
You met his gaze again in the half-light of the hallway and there was something in them that you couldn’t quite name, but it held you still, rooted to your spot, heart thundering in your chest, a lump of emotion closing of your throat.
Keanu leaned forward, his lips brushing softly against yours, beard tickling your skin. It was a barely-there touch, but it felt branded on you.
“Now you can have some fun in your next I never game,” he said with a small smirk and you grinned. “It was very nice to meet you.”
He stepped back and held the door open for you.
“You too, Keanu.”
You stepped outside a huge grin on your lips. This had certainly been the best birthday ever.
