Your alarm blared throughout the bedroom, causing you to groan and stretch out as little as you can. Your wife’s arms are wrapped around your waist and your back is to her front. You feel Mary’s arms tighten to keep you in your spot.

“Baby,” you turn your head and place a kiss on her flushed cheek, “I have to start getting ready.” She just groans as a response and continues to keep her limbs wrapped around you.

Her mouth hangs open and she lets out a booming snore to cover your protests.

“Mary!”

That gets her attention right away as her eyes shoot open and she sits up a little. Her lip juts out in a pout, “Don’t call me that.” Whenever you fight, you’re generally the calm one and never raise your voice along with only calling her by pet names like “Baby” or “Honey”. So now that you used her first name, she is wide awake and probably a little scared.

“There! That’s one way to get your attention.” You smile in triumph and lean over to place a small peck on her frowning lips. Her mouth drops open a little with her eyebrows furrowing in disbelief.

“That’s not fair! You can’t do that to me!” She shouts, seeing as you already made your way to the bathroom.

“I love you!”

She grumbles back a quiet “I love you”.

After a quick see you later and a couple of kisses, you make your way to your vehicle and head to your destination. Luckily, the directions your manager sent to you are not too far from your loft.

As you walk in, you greet multiple directors and writers before making your way to the seat where all the cameras are pointed to. A makeup artist and hairdresser come over and make a few tweaks to your look just to be sure everything is perfect. To be honest, you didn’t want to get out of bed at all today, but this wasn’t the worst thing to do.

“Last question for today isssss…out of all women’s football, who is your favorite goalkeeper.”

You let out a small chuckle and stare at the camera. “This feels like a setup. Well if I don’t say Mary Earps I think she’d be quite angry with me and would sleep on the couch tonight.”

“Wouldn’t you sleep on the couch?” The man’s eyebrows scrunch in confusion.

“Yeah, you would think, right? But one time Mary told me and I quote, ‘Just because I don’t like you at the moment, doesn’t mean I don’t care about you’. It’s a continuation of the rapid-fire googling he must have done  to turn up the stories about Rasher’s spectacular rocket launch failures.  At every conversational opportunity, naturally occurring or manufactured, he casually drops all kinds of dirt regarding Sir Ian’s personal peccadillos, his shady business practices, his embarrassing lunch orders. The countertops and end tables throughout the loft and every flat surface at the precinct is suddenly covered with tabloids that just happen to have fallen open to the pages covered with a spread of unflattering  photos of Sir Ian at the beach reading fourth rate Chelsea Cain novels.  

She doesn’t rise to the bait, though. She’s been training hard for six years when it comes to not rising to his bait. He should know better than to come for her with such weak sauce moves. Then again, he’s been training hard for six years, too. She should know it won’t end with simple bait dangling. 

It doesn’t end there. He gets nosy next. Not with her, really. He gets behind-the-scenes nosy, which is infinitely worse. He drops the by the morgue and does such bizarre, round-about questioning of Lanie that he sets off Lanie’s bonnet bees. Her friend is briefly convinced that Kate is pregnant, that one or both of them is having an affair, that Castle has some brain-eating parasite or was possibly trying to recruit her to round out their suddenly open marriage. He calls her Dad and manages to sow the seeds of alarm so that it takes her the better part of an evening to convince him that, no, she hasn’t been abducted in at least a month, no, she does’t get abducted all that regularly, no, she isn’t going to disappear into Witness Protection, no, she is not leading some kind of double life, not otherwise specified. 

She still doesn't rise to the bait. She utters not a world about her damage-control phone calls. She so pointedly ignores the subject of Mars that the solar system might as well have lost another planet. She does not engage. Oh, she fumes. Her snark and petty punishments rise to near lethal levels from time to time. At the precinct, she makes him file. At home she does tiny, wanton loads of laundry, knowing full well that he is pathologically unable to leave a basket sitting full without folding everything and putting it away. She retaliates, but she does not engage. Not until she comes across what can only be called a dossier. 

It’s in the stupid hidden drawer in his desk. She’s not snooping when she comes across it. She’s not. She’s passing through the office with her cell pressed to her ear. The boys and Lanie are already at a scene she needs to get to. Lanie’s passing details to Esposito who is shouting them to Ryan. She’s getting lost. She needs a legal pad. She yanks open the regular drawer. The false bottom pops immediately up, because he’s overstuffed the hidden one as usual. She’s not snooping, but the words Beckett: Mars Investigation are more or less impossible to miss. She fishes the file folder out. It’s thick enough she needs to catch the open end with her free hand to keep everything from spilling out. 

A few pages slip free anyway—a timeline tracking her comings and goings over the last eighteen months. It’s incredibly detailed, down to the color coding of blocks of days she spent at her own apartment versus those at the loft. It would be creepy, if it weren’t just so dumb. She catches movement out of the corner of her eye. It’s him, rushing in from the bedroom, still buttoning his shirt. It’s him stopping short, the color draining from his face 

“Ryan,” she says flatly. “I’ll call you from the car.” She hangs up. 

“Oh. Hey. What’ve you, um . . .” He approaches the desk in stuttering steps. “What’ve you got there?”

“Why do you care?” She holds up the folder, then lets it slap down on the desk. “Castle . . .” She pinches the bridge of her nose. “Why do you care?” 

“You were gonna go to Mars without me,” he mumbles. His hands twitch toward the folder, then curl into tight fists.”I figured I should figure out what I did, so I could . . . not do it again.” 

His voice is small and worried. It’s a sound that’s too familiar, though she hasn’t heard it in a little while. She hasn’t heard it since they decided that they had to just get past the botched wedding, the missing time—all of it. She hasn’t really heard it since the wedding and pains her to hear it now. It pains her and she is  . . . not her best self in the moment. 

“You were gonna go without me,” she snaps. She doesn’t want to snap. She hasn’t risen to his bait these last few days and she doesn’t want to sink to this level, but she snaps. “What did I do that you were going to leave the planet?” 

“Interviewed for the job in DC and lied about it.” The answer comes quickly. It’s not as sharp as it could be, but he’s not his best self at the moment, either. His chin juts out, all at odds with the hangdog expression in his eyes. “That was a long day.” 

“DC,” she repeats blankly. They stare at each other across the desk, littered with sheets positively filled with his neat handwriting. “You thought I was going to DC, so you decided to go to Mars.” 

“Decided might be overstating the case.” His cheeks go a little pink. “There were some . . . gaps in my application.” 

She laughs. It’s a struggling, painful thing first, but it takes over her whole body before long. It extends all the way down to her toes and up throughout the roots of her hair. She moves swiftly around the desk and rams her body into his. She wraps her arms tight around him. She shakes with the ridiculous memory of creeping form the bed every night for a week after the FBI had fired her. Her mind is all a-blur with google search on how to join the circus, how long it would take to get a mechanic’s certification, how to get in on the ground floor of the first manned mission to Mars. 

“You should have seen mine,” she tells him when her breath comes back to her. She thinks for a second. “You can, actually.” She kisses him soundly on the mouth. “Tonight, Castle. I’ll show you mine, if you show me yours.”

“Four.” The bouncer groused and Rafael nodded, more to himself than anyone else. The elevator ride was quick and when the doors opened, Rafael found himself in an unmarked doorway that was dimly lit.

A pair heels clacked along the marble flooring. A petite blonde in a black pant suit approached. She wore a pink and gold venetian mask with satin leaves. “Are you Mr. Barba?”

“Yes.”

“Please sign this.” The woman jutted out a clipboard, which contained an extensive NDA (which talked about celebrity sightings, detailed the photo restrictions, and used the word "anus" a lot) to sign. As a lawyer, Rafael was able to make sense of a lot of the mumbo-jumbo boiler plate filler, narrowing down on what actual rights and remedies he was signing away. Consent was all over the paperwork. Rafael swallowed hard – as a special victims prosecutor, every cell in his body screamed to abort the mission. However, this was an opportunity he could not resist. The door opened to another dimly-lit loft lined with black couches and exposed brick. Rafael turned around on his barstool and watched everyone. A few couples started making out in a way that tested the limits of typical PDA. Michael Gordon & The Crossing - Anonymous Man - song cycle for 24 voices (Cantaloupe Music)

Scored for 24 unaccompanied voices, Anonymous Man is an hour-long piece that expands on Michael Gordon’s inventive approach to composition, layering minimalistic swirls of vocal sound on top of one another to create a hypnotic incantation. Gordon drew inspiration for the piece from his neighborhood in lower Manhattan. “When I moved into my loft on Desbrosses Street, the streets were empty, since few people lived there. Over time, the neighborhood changed from an industrial warehouse district to a residential area. Anonymous Man is a memoir about my block; it’s built around my memories of moving in, meeting my future wife for the first time there, and conversations I’ve had with two men who made their home on the loading dock across the street.” Performing this tour de force is the Grammy-winning, Philadelphia-based choir The Crossing. Conducted by Donald Nally, the choir is dedicated to expanding the contemporary choral music experience through commissions, collaborations, community, and performances that are characterized by a distinctive unity of sound and spirit. Please welcome my guests Arash Torabi (Beat Hotel, June Brides, The Distractions, The Painted Word, The Granite Shore) and Jim Shepherd (The Jasmine Minks) as we delve into a mixtape that generated great conversation, memories, and anecdotes.

I remember The Loft from the early days. First thoughts were: these are nice guys, all (apart from Dave Morgan) were journos and very middle class. I also thought who needs another Lloyd Cole! I actually grew to love Pete's songs and he has a better back catalogue than Lloyd Cole overall. We hung about a bit (Pete Astor is a great fella and has a great enthusiasm for life and music. There was a bit of 'healthy' competition between us, vying for supremacy at The Living Room. I remember Pete reviewing us (Jasmine Minks) at The Living Room. We were a bit 60s obsessed at that time performing songs by Love and The Cramps, we did songs by The Scars and Chelsea too btw. Anyway, things came to a head when The Loft played The Ambulance Station on The Old Kent Road, a brilliant squat/venue. Superb place - best venue in London at that time, no big business, run by music fans. Me Tom (Reid; drums/vocals) and Adam (Sanderson;vocals/guitar) got very drunk and formed a mosh pit and everyone around gave us loads of space as we were flinging ourselves round and round. I jumped on stage and took Pete's mic and wrapped the cable around him, completely tying his arms to his side. It was a spectacle and Pete thought it was great. Andy Strickland was furious and wanted to kill me! Those were the times. The Loft came fully formed. Most of us were still finding our way. He talked about people like Randy Newman to me and I was mindblown - I thought that was for old hippies. Little did I know the genius of RN! Still love Pete's songs - I heard his latest on the radio last week and loved it.

Snivelling Shits - loved em. Freeform, amazing images in the lyrics and Sex Pistols vibe. Is God A Man was a great single - making God an ordinary geezer. They were still going up until recently, playing gigs in a pub on The Old Kent Road as coincidence would have it!

I lump in John Cooper Clarke, Bowie's mod songs and Wreckless Eric in the same era for me because I first bought the Bowie song on an ep released in 79 or 80 and the others were around at the same time. JCC and WE were part of the students union gigs or medium -sized venues. Not your home-grown punk stuff like UK Subs (who used to play our local youth club). They were brilliant though. There was a clear division then between straight people who liked disco or heavy rock and then there was the left field folk like us who liked bands on Rough Trade, Factory and Fast Records etc. It suited us better, more honest, something with a bit of an edge to it. It was inspiring, whereas most music was for consumption.

The Loft was the first band I ever saw live. They were supporting the Colour Field (Terry Hall from the Specials) on tour, the same tour that saw them (The Loft) split up on stage! I wasn’t at that gig though: I saw them at Cornwall Coliseum. I fell in love with Pete Astor & Dave Morgan’s next band the Weather Prophets even more! I love Pete’s songs and Dave’s drumming. I still have to pinch myself that I’m in 2 bands with him!

I remember hearing some of the pre-psychedelia 60s songs on the radio in 79 and 80 and thinking, this has a lot in common with the post punks bands, not huge guitar and drums, more scratchy and it talked to me more than most chart music did, or at least the dance stuff and the rock stuff. I remember Rolling Stones I Wanna Be your Man and thinking the guitar was something I'd like to do. Then The Byrds Singles vol.1 made its way into my hands. Wow, that was an eye-opener. I only really knew Mr Tambourine Man, but every track on that album is pure guitar-pop screetch heaven. From there it was a small step to Nuggets and bands like 13th Floor Elevators, The Seeds and The Sonics which drew me in completely.

I loved the British bands like The Small Faces and The Kinks from the early 80s. But it wasn't until the mid 80s that our manager Kevin Pearce made me a cassette of The Action. What a fucking singer, I was already madly into Northern Soul having been introduced (indoctrinated) by a workmate who went to the Wigan Casino all-nighters (as lots of my school mates did). I wanted to be like Ray Davies in particular. I started jamming on Tired Of Waiting at our gigs and trying to write about ordinary folk, more story-telling in my songs.

My gateway to the 60s came through Jim’s band and other early Creation Records faves like Biff Bang Pow! and Primal Scream

I was also discovering Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys. I fell in love with 20/20 first of all, then I bought Surf's Up, then Pet Sounds. Brian Wilson was on my shoulder as I was writing the songs for Another Age, our second full LP for Creation. Brian Wilson came over to be interviewed on Radio London and I had to be talked out of camping out overnight to meet him going into the radio station - haha. I nicked the intro from I Can Hear Music for my song Nothing Can Stop Me and wrote a song about Brian, Living Out Your Dreams. he was in my veins by then!

Paul Cooper played genuine organs using a Leslie cabinet. It sounded amazing, but was like carting a large piece of furniture to gigs. Enormous!. He was a cool dude - looked like a Beatnik, wispy beard and leather jacket.

I'm sure he did occasionally if only to make sure it was in the right position. They were fairly quiet things and had to be close to hear them. Microphones didn't even pick them up that well. Big Star was a massive influence too. (Alan)McGee gave me a cassette with Alex Chilton written on it. He told me to listen to it and take it in. I played it to death. It turns out it was Big Star Third. I went a found a copy and played that tons too. Then I found a double LP of the first two Big Star albums. That became my template for Scratch The Surface basically.

I was so amazed when we started playing gigs with The Jazz Butcher. Pat knew I loved Alex Chilton so he brought a signed copy of Chilton's latest single to a gig to show me. Chilton had turned up at a Jazz Butcher gig in the US and given it to him. I was gobsmacked! Pat was such a nice guy. Always wanting to help others out - no ego whatsoever! He would insist that the Minks got treated well wherever we went with him. If he was invited to do a radio interview, he'd make sure that I was invited too. He would miss out on his hotel bookings sometimes to come with us into the night to find people to stay with and party.

I love the Bowie track on this mix: I have it on a mod compilation “20 Mod Classics” I think it’s called? The sleeve is a mock-up of Sound Affects by The Jam. Anyway: I’m a bit late to the party with Bowie: I bought Ziggy Stardust finally about a year ago! For years the only track I had by him is Can’t Help Thinking About Me!

Pat gave us a really cool introduction at the Creation All-dayer at The Doing It For The Kids event in 1988. I wish I had that recorded. It's funny because the whole Minks gig was put up on youtube last week but, alas, no Pat intro.Ed Ball was another lovely guy. I remember supporting The Times. I had never seen such a tight band among all the bands in our scene. We were mostly a bit sloppy, we all tried but we were jagged around the edges. Ed was a step above.

I love John Cooper Clarke though I’m ashamed to say I that I don’t have any of his records! I’m glad I got to meet him though: he was on the same bill as us (The June Brides) when we played Barcelona in 2016. He was quite pleased when I told him that I’d also played on the last two Distractions albums. He told me he wrote a great review of one of their early records (before I was a member)!I love Ed Ball: one of my favourite songwriters of all time! I could literally bore you senseless for days on end, going on about how much I love that man and his songs!

Gotta get Kevin Robertson or The Vapour Trails in the mix Matthew. They (VPs) played with the Minks at a gig in Aberdeen in 2019. They were brilliant. Me and Arash both played on Kevin's second solo album on a song called If You're Free. 

Postcard Records was probably the single biggest influence at the very beginning of The Jasmine Minks for me. the other might point to Julian Cope or The Fire Engines. All the Postcard records were amazing, the packaging was funny and cool. They were a reaction to the Oi! punk scene which seemed to us to be regurgitating the most obvious parts of punk for a younger audience. Schoolkids basically. So we  wanted something newer and with some hip cache. Orange Juice were amazing, the songs were punky-pop, the attitude was that it's ok to be a bit effeminate and bitchy, also to be loud guitars with great songs, varying with softer slower songs. I loved it all.

I don't have the singles any more but I still have a cassette with most of the Postcard singles on for some strange reason. I ditched all my vinyl when I was living in a tiny , damp cottage in Glencoe, but somehow the cassettes survived. The subtleties don't matter to me so much any more. I used to think that the bands all lost something when they recorded elsewhere. I love the Orange Juice first and third albums in particular. I still think Rip It Up album is crap. Folk music was a big part of my childhood. My sister is 8 years older than me and my carer for my younger years in many ways as we were constantly being evicted and moving from house to house. She was a big folk music fan and would take me along to folk clubs the length and breadth of the country. It was a tough listen for a young kid. But nowadays when I hear Bert Jansch, Pentangle, Incredible String Band, Fairport Convention I think fondly of those days. It's just bloody great guitar music mostly with great stories, often as simple as pop songs or in the case of ISB a precursor to Prog Rock but with a folk slant. I learned how to play guitar from my sister and, to this day, I still pick a lot and use that folk influence. From our first single, Think and Work For Nothing, I was picking as much as thrashing my guitar.

Kids On A Crime Spree - sounds cool - all been done a hundred times but still sounds good, Beach Boys, Spector with a punky edge.The Coral - early 2000s one of the few things I liked to hear on the radio (usually BBC Radio 2). Still as melodic and with interesting sounds. Rhythms are a bit Bo Diddley-ish. And I love Bo Diddley!

AT I’ve always had mixed feelings about that whole current bands doing the C86 revival thing. The only band I really like from that camp is Veronica Falls. I don’t wanna diss anybody and I’ve played on records released by Slumberland (by The June Brides and Phil Wilson solo) but there just seems to be a never ending conveyor belt of C86 bands… bands that mimic that old sound with precision. What made the original artists interesting to me was that they all had their own style. I was mostly into the Creation Records bands anyway, and a few others. I was never a die hard. I never even heard of Sarah Records until years later, when I became friends with a former Sarah recording artiste (Andy Hitchcock from Action Painting) I dunno…. If the kids love it then great

I love Geoffrey Ingram. Too many others to choose from. Long Time Gone, Boy in the Paisley Shirt, The Dream Inspires, Sad Mona Lisa, Hard Luck Story Number 39, Goodnight Mr Spaceman. No favourite album as such. They’re all good apart from the last two, the post “comeback” ones of this century. I’m a massive Ed Ball and The Times fan as well. His songs really resonate with me. He has a great voice, he’s a terrific songwriter, very musically open-minded. That whole album Pop Goes Art is faultless. I just bought it again on CD. Ed told me that the vinyl reissue copy I had (I recently posted the sleeve) with the Pop Art sleeve is a bootleg! I was gutted! Then he told me how hard he tried to stop it from being released

Interdependency and art: a convo with Candice Hoyes

I met up with singer and songwriter Candice Hoyes in a dimly lit, low hanging loft in the Chelsea area of New York City. I'd been in the area over a hundred times, but never happened upon this particular spot. After hearing its name, the Secret Loft, I realized very quickly why (hint: it's a secret). I climbed a tall flight of narrow steps and was met with the laughter that bellowed as a result of the comedic opening act. Hearing jokes about chopped cheese sandwiches and paninis, I knew I was in the right spot. 

Bushwick Grand manages a concert series by Airbnb aptly titled, Houseguests. Yeah, I didn't know they did these either. But, it was amazing. It was low-key and energetic--the perfect mix for a Thursday evening. Candice Hoyes was the feature.

I got to sit down and chit chat and, after asking how she heard about BGF, found that Candice loved the magazine and decided to email our Founder and Editor-in-Chief, Nick Alder. Sounding more serendipitous than strategic, I also found that Candice's relationships with her "sister friends" often started as half-fate and mostly drive. She relates to visual art and Black creatives and doesn't hesitate to reach out when she believes she can create something amazing with them. Candice also states that she never takes it personally when she doesn't hear back. A lot of us can use a page from this book. Now this isn't a tip on how to get ahead in the creative game, but a good lesson on how to create the bonds you want.

Candice is clear that connecting with other artists to create always happens when she needs it to and that she mostly collaborates with Black women; she finds that the conversation is more straightforward with women of similar backgrounds. Candice goes on: [These] are the stories I’m passionate about telling. Occasionally it’s other women who speak to other aspects of my politics or vision. We can never affirm each other enough. Why? Let me reflect. We can never affirm each other enough because the status quo erases us in so many ways daily. I feel like many of us black women artists are making art to broaden the narratives about us and it can fuel you and inspire you to work harder when you feel seen.

Rutherford: How do you feel this interdependency has propelled your career or has it stagnated it?

Candice: [It has] absolutely propelled it and it begins in the imagination of the women who came before me. The images that I saw when I saw Soul Train on TV, when I saw my first music videos and when I read I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. That’s the first book I got that was written by a Black woman. That was formative. We have a command of so many different narratives running at the same time. It really enriches your growth as an artist when you can create without that gaze—the male gaze, the gaze of the majority and make central the things the way that you see [them] and what’s important to you. It’s always been a light for me. It’s never been anything but a light for me. The more I dug into the history, it gave me perspective on my potential. It made me want to help younger women and girls.

Rutherford: What is your ultimate goal?

Candice: I love writing music. It just adds another element to the storytelling for me. It just deepens the impact. My ultimate goal is to make music for the rest of my life. Like Ruby Dee or Carmen De Lavallade or Maya Angelou, I want to constantly be looking forward and make work [so that the] younger people after me say, "this work marks the turns of her life". I just want it to be a long career. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be long. 

Rutherford: You don’t want long misery though. 

Candice: No, I love what I do. I have a privilege. I look at women like Eartha Kitt and Lena Horne who were blacklisted. 

Rutherford: This is your day job?

Candice: Yes. I’ve always had a combination of jobs, but yeah, that’s what I’m doing. It’s taken me a while to [move] from non-music jobs. There might be a time where I do it again. But I’ve been doing music non-stop since I was six years old. So I guess it’s me. 

Rutherford: What would you say to that Black Creative that is still working on making their art their full time gig?

Candice: The most important thing to a creative is to make sure they're working as hard as they can to provide themselves with what they need. And if that means you have to work for the better part of your day, and the time you have to do your art is a good quantity and you feel confident and independent and clear then that’s good art and that’ll get you where you need to go. Keep yourself in good company, so the time you spend working on your art, you can share it, so people can value it and [those people] can help you grow it. As long as you set yourself up and take the best care of yourself. That’s a very long term approach that might not satisfy everyone. There might be people who need to let it out right away. I support all the avenues. I do think especially for Black women artists, that taking care of ourselves is paramount.

Rutherford: Why do you think Black Girls fly?

Candice: I think because from girls to women , we only get more courageous, more insightful, more beautiful.

Creating work that strays away from the infamous gaze and centering Black women, you will not be surprised at the beautiful creations Candice makes. Though I only got to speak with her for a quick minute, I got to hear Candice perform. Sounding like a cross between Nina Simone and the sweet hum of mama during a Saturday morning cleaning session, I didn't want to leave. But alas, it was a school night and I knew there would be a lot more tunes from Ms. Hoyes. Candice is currently working on an album that is set to be released early 2019. Kurt pulled out his phone to see that he had a new message from Rachel, and rolled his eyes. “Rachel’s been texting me all day,” he said, loud enough so that Blaine could hear him. “At one point she asked me what I was going to wear, as though she has any valid opinions on my wardrobe.”

He heard Blaine’s snort of laughter. He walked over to the kitchen to grab the box of paper-wrapped macarons he’d made as a host gift. Even though Rachel had been living in her new place for two months, now, this was the first time they’d all worked out their schedules to have Kurt and Blaine come over for dinner. Kurt had continued to constantly receive her texts, grab coffee together a couple times, and see her around NYADA’s campus on occasion, but tonight was different. Not only were they going to see her new apartment - they were also meeting the guy she’d been dating for several weeks.

“I’m sure she’s just nervous,” Blaine said, stepping out from his room. “Is this even?” he asked, gesturing at the checkered bow tie he was wearing. “I’ve been staring in the mirror and I can’t seem to get it quite right.”

Kurt gestured him forward, and once Blaine got closer, Kurt tugged lightly at one end of the bow tie. “There,” he said, stepping back. “You’re perfect.”

He could see color rising in Blaine’s cheeks, and turned away, determined to ignore it. “You all ready?”

”Yep,” Blaine replied. “Let’s go.”

Dinner was delicious, and they ate it in the living room, around the coffee table, because the apartment was too small for a dining table. Despite the size, the apartment was nice - decorated, Kurt assumed, by the women who had already lived there. He’d seen Rachel’s high school bedroom, and had never trusted her with any participation in the design on the loft.

They were accompanied by Rachel’s roommates, Chelsea and Sabine, and by her not-yet-a-boyfriend-but-maybe-heading-that-way, Malcolm. Malcolm was by far the quietest person in the room, but Kurt didn’t think he was timid. As the rest of them chattered loudly about movies and music and theater and New York, Malcolm seemed to observe them with calm contentment. He spoke up when he had something to contribute, but didn’t burst into the conversation abruptly. He was casually affectionate with Rachel - they sat thigh-to-thigh on the couch, and he reached out to brush her hair back when she leaned over and almost got it in her food. Rachel had told Kurt already, over a phone call a couple weeks ago, that she’d met Malcolm through Chelsea - he’d been a set technician for a show that she’d done.

Rachel, herself, had just been cast in a chorus position in a new musical. She regaled them all with the details of her audition and callback process. Eventually she took a pause from talking about herself to ask, “Kurt, what about you? You were looking into some projects, right?”

Kurt looked down at his plate, inhaled, gave her a smile. His job writing for Stage Left required him to keep up on the news and events in the New York theater world - trends in the industry, what kinds of plays were being produced, which ones were successful, what to keep your eye on. He’d mentioned to Rachel a couple of projects that interested him, and she’d encouraged him to look into them further, to audition, to pursue them and not take no for an answer.

Kurt, though, was not Rachel Berry - and most days he was very, very thankful for this. Between school and his jobs and the other sundry responsibilities of life, he was busy, and always had an excuse not to spend the extra time and effort to really try breaking into the theater scene. He knew he ought to be auditioning, even if he was going to be rejected, just to get that experience under his belt. But he could always start that grueling work after he’d completed his degree, couldn’t he?

“Nothing of substance, no,” he said to Rachel.

“Oh, well I might have something you’d be interested in,” she said, hands fluttering in excitement. “There’s this girl who was in my ballet class, she’s going to be a senior too and she’s putting on this production as her fall project - I think you’d love it, remind me to get you two in touch, okay?”

Kurt felt warmth fill his chest. “Thanks, Rachel,” he said. For all that he had put up with over their years of friendship, he shouldn’t forget that having Rachel on his side was always a good thing.

After dinner they drank wine and played charades. Blaine teamed up with Chelsea and Sabine, who were both accomplished pantomimes. Kurt and Rachel knew each other well enough that they could often guess each other’s prompts pretty quickly, but Kurt was impressed with just how in tune Rachel and Malcolm were. Even though Malcolm was no actor, his attempts were earnest if not the most creative. Nonetheless, he and Rachel seemed so often to be on the same wavelength, usually guessing each other before Kurt had a chance to jump in. And Rachel seemed so happy - giggling constantly, cuddling up against him on the couch, frequently glancing in his direction.

On the walk to the subway, Blaine asked, “So, what’d you think?”

Kurt took a deep breath of the night air - pleasantly warm now that the sun had set, smelling of asphalt and exhaust and electricity but somehow still appealing. This was the scent of New York, of his city, his new home.

“I liked Malcolm,” he said. “I think he’s...he could be really good for her.”

“I agree,” Blaine said. “He could sort of - balance her out.”

Kurt grinned. “That’s a tactful way to put it, but - I think you’re right.”

“It’s good to see her so happy,” Blaine said as they descended into the station, both pulling MetroCards from their wallets.

“It is,” Kurt agreed. So much of Rachel’s romantic life had been - turbulent, and dramatic. The more judgemental part of Kurt thought that she probably brought a lot of it on herself, but still. If this guy could just be simple and straight-forward, it would be good for her. Kurt could be happy for her.

As roommates in New York in the early 2000s, they started their own live comedy talk show, “Creation Nation,” in the basements of bookstores and bars.

The first “Billy on the Street” videos, with Mr. Eichner surprising passers-by with questions and games and Mr. Taylor often holding the camera, were a popular recurring segment. “Creation Nation” put them on the very map they’d been studying since childhood, and today, they each wreak havoc, via their respective shows, on the citizens of this fair city.

Over lunch at Tavern on the Green, in their signature rhythm and ratio, Mr. Taylor, 39, and Mr. Eichner, 38 — who will also soon appear in FX’s “American Horror Story: Cult” — recalled cherished VHS tapes, the glory days of gay night life, and apartments with curtains for doors.

This conversation has been edited and condensed.

ROBIN LORD TAYLOR I was at the student union, and my booth was next to Billy’s. Billy was telling jokes about, I swear, like, Elaine Stritch and Jennifer Holliday. I think it was something about the Tonys that year, maybe?

BILLY EICHNER I don’t remember that at all.

TAYLOR My back was to Billy’s back, and I remember hearing him and being like, “That’s exactly the kind of conversation I came to Northwestern for. I’m gonna make you my best friend.”

EICHNER He came to this “Ray of Light” party and he was this little boy from Iowa, and he wore these fake cat ears that I guess you could buy at Bloomingdale’s at the time? And I was like, “No. Who’s that person? I’m not into it.”

TAYLOR I knew you were going to bring up the cat ears.

EICHNER To this day, I don’t understand why you would walk in with cat ears.

TAYLOR I was from a very small town, I had just come out of the closet, and it was very proto-radical faerie, without the hallucinogens.

EICHNER It was like our generation’s version of cutting. Months later, we decided to move to a bigger apartment and we needed a fifth roommate. They were like, “That guy Robin said he would take it,” and I was against it. But we were desperate. To make matters worse, we had to move in the summer before junior year, and Robin and I had to live — just the two of us.

TAYLOR I had a car.

EICHNER And I was like, “Well, that’s something.” So we would go to the mall, and we would go shopping, and we’d go to the movies.

TAYLOR It was “Living Out Loud” that did it, I think.

EICHNER There was a series of movies we went to see that normal college-aged men were not going to see in the Midwest: “Living Out Loud,” with Holly Hunter and Danny DeVito; “Isn’t She Great,” with Bette Midler and Nathan Lane. We were the only people in the theater, opening weekend of “Isn’t She Great” at the Old Orchard Shopping Mall. We would watch movies at home; we’d watch “Truth or Dare,” and I had a VHS of this thing called “The Oscars’ Greatest Moments.”

TAYLOR We memorized that tape.

EICHNER He was this quiet closeted gay boy in Iowa, and I was this louder closeted gay guy in New York City, but we were both locked in our rooms watching cable TV and sucking it all in. When we found each other, it was like, “Wait, you’re interested in —— ?”

TAYLOR Like, a “Whales of August” joke.

EICHNER We were theater majors in a suburb of Chicago and we were being gay and going to gay bars for the first time, together. Then we caught the last gasp of great New York gay night life. We could go out every night of the week.

TAYLOR And we did.

EICHNER Tuesday nights we’d go to Beige at B Bar. We both met boyfriends at Beige. We’d go to Spa on Thursdays, Starlight and The Cock on Friday, and then ——

TAYLOR Opaline is in there somewhere.

EICHNER Opaline on Saturday, or the Roxy. We were doing ecstasy, and it was the days of big club DJs ——

TAYLOR Twilo.

EICHNER Twilo, Junior Vasquez. We partied, and I’m so glad we did, because it doesn’t really exist at the moment, and we couldn’t do it now. Except, I still do it. I shouldn’t do it. It’s a bad look.

TAYLOR We lived in this crazy loft two blocks south of the World Trade Center. No doors, no walls — just curtains.

EICHNER Ten days before 9/11, we moved.

TAYLOR We lived for about five years, then, in Chelsea. I was doing commercials and little things here and there. I mostly played stoner skater types.

EICHNER I’d gone to a ton of open calls and never got anything. I was temping and bartending. No one was taking me seriously.

TAYLOR Billy was sitting on the couch one evening and asked if I would like to make something together. He even had the title, “Creation Nation.” I was sold immediately. We took where we were in our lives, and created these heightened versions of ourselves.

EICHNER I created this angry, irrationally passionate persona that “Billy on the Street” grew out of, which is not close to me. It’s coming from somewhere, I guess, but it’s very much a character.

TAYLOR I was playing a closeted actor, refusing to come out.

TAYLOR I remember when the woman chased us onto the subway. Billy had yelled “Lucy Liu” in her face and she was screaming for the police.

EICHNER I told Robin to stick the tape in your underwear or something?

TAYLOR It’s funny: our current projects are the closest we’ve ever been to working on very similar things.

EICHNER I think he’s so brilliant on that show, but I’m not a superhero person. Robin would call me and tell me what’s happening on “Gotham” and I’d be like, “Dude, I don’t know what you’re talking about. You walk with that cane and put on that prosthetic makeup, and I’m gonna go write some jokes.” Now, I’m on “American Horror Story,” and I honestly do — he would call me and tell me about these violent scenes he had to do, how you have to choreograph it, how much time it takes — I have a new appreciation for it. Our careers also never were a source of tension between us, ever. There was no friction. Maybe friction because I didn’t clean the apartment.

TAYLOR Well, just that time you vacuumed vomit into the non-wet dry vac.

EICHNER I was the roommate who paid half the rent that he paid and still wouldn’t clean. I always had a great sense of entitlement.

TAYLOR Billy has always been completely unafraid to speak his mind and tell people what he believes. And that’s something I struggle with.

EICHNER I do feel like I’ve made Robin meaner, in a good way. When I met Robin, he was wearing those stupid cat ears, and he wanted everyone to like him. If I taught Robin anything, it’s that not everyone needs to like you. Granted, everyone does love Robin. He’s, like, the nicest person in the entire world. Not everyone loves me, but I think between the two of us, it’s a yin and yang.

TAYLOR All I want to give Billy would just be a connection to love and family. I just want to be a constant in his life and a connection to someone who loves him unconditionally.

EICHNER That’s nice. I said I made people hate him! But that’s why this works.
