English localization of Zhongliā€™s and Nahidaā€™s Archon titles, Genshin Impact Character Title Localization in General, and Zhongliā€™s title of Yanwang Dijun
I was reading the wiki page for the current Archons (and their names & titles) and the more I think about their titles the more I feel the English localization of Zhongliā€™s title is strange.
Here (just the ones from the five released regions):
.
Venti/Barbatos, Lord Barbatos, God of Freedom, Anemo Archon, of Mondstadt
Zhongli/Morax, Rex Lapis, God of Contracts, Geo Archon, of Liyue
Raiden Ei/Beelzebul, Raiden Shogun, God of Eternity, Electro Archon, of Inazuma
Nahida/Buer, Lesser Lord Kusanali, God of Wisdom, Dendro Archon, of Sumeru
Furina/Focalors, Lady Furina, God of Justice, Hydro Archon, of Fontaine
.
ā€¦.face in hands. Why is Zhongliā€™s Archon title 岩ēŽ‹åøå› (Yanwang Dijun / Yan3wang3 Di4jun1) officially localized in Latin (with the meaning of King of Stone). Of course Iā€™m used to seeing it because heā€™s consistently referred to as Rex Lapis in English, but if you really think about it:
ā€œHello, Iā€™m a god in whatā€™s basically a Chinese xianxia setting. Iā€™m the god of stone and contracts, and I know a lot about the traditions of my nation, which is based on Chinese culture. For some time, I was seen as the leader or even emperor of my nation. Iā€™m worshipped with a Latin title by my own peopleā€
ā€¦
(Iā€™ll explain the Chinese titleā€™s meaning further below.)
-
Some time ago, I watched the first few minutes of the Sumeru Archon Quest in Japanese. Paimon mentions the Dendro Archon by title: ć‚Æ惩ć‚Æć‚µćƒŠćƒŖ惇惓.
In romaji, this is Kura Kusanari Debi. (According to her wiki page, literally speaking, this title means Little Kusanali Devi.)
I canā€™t confirm its accuracy, but the etymology section of her page says this:
.
The name Kusanali likely refers to the Kusanāįø·i-Jātaka, one of the poems within the Jātaka, a series of 547 Buddhist poems detailing the previous births of Buddha. The Kusanāįø·i-Jātaka specifically details the encounter with a tree sprite.
"Kusanāįø·i" itself is derived from the Pali words kusa ("kusa-grass," a sacred plant used in Hindu ceremonies) and nāįø·i ("a hollow stalk or tube").
.
and
.
In Korean, the name is ģæ ģ‚¬ė‚˜ė¦¬ ė°ė¹„ Kusanari Debi. The word ė°ė¹„ Debi derived from the Sanskrit or Pali word devÄ« ("goddess" or "queen").
In Japanese, the name is ć‚Æ惩ć‚Æć‚µćƒŠćƒŖ惇惓 Kura Kusanari Debi, where 惇惓 Debi may be of the same derivation as above, and ć‚Æ惩 Kura may be derived from the Pali word khudda ("small", "inferior" or "low"). Kura may also be derived from the Persian word Ų®ŲÆŲ§ Khuda ("Lord" or "God").
.
Genshin Impact doesnā€™t have Sanskrit as an available subtitle language but I wonder what would her title be in Sanskritā€¦? And if any of the official subtitle languages are similar to a theoretical Sanskrit titleā€¦
-
Oh, also, a note on character titles in Genshin Impact:
Since the original language is in Chinese, it seems most of the time a (non-Liyue) characterā€™s Chinese title will not be a phonetic transcription. Instead, the Chinese title will be based on meaning, and the English localization will likely take that meaning and either localize it into English, or into the language ā€œnativeā€ to the in-game region (and real-life culture).
For example, a Fontainian title, a Mondstadtian title, and a Liyue title would all have Chinese meaning in the Chinese version, but theyā€™ll probably be localized into either English for all three, or French, German, and Chinese pinyin respectively (ā€¦.or Latin. Itā€™s not very consistent in Liyue) in the English version.
Here:
.
Lyneyā€™s Chinese title (from his key visual) ęƒ‘å…‰å¹»ęˆ (Magic of Puzzling Lights) is localized as ā€œSpectacle of Phantasmagoriaā€ in the English version, but theoretically they could also localize it into French as ā€œSpectacle de fantasmagorieā€ (as it is in the official French version)
Albedoā€™s Chinese title ē™½åž©ä¹‹å (Son of Chalk) is localized as the German ā€œKreideprinzā€ (Chalk Prince) but theoretically they could also could localize it into English as ā€œChalk Princeā€
.
(Whatā€™s a good example for a Liyue character that doesnā€™t need extensive explanation on Daoismā€¦ Ah whatever. Iā€™ll explain Zhongliā€™s own Archon title.)
.
Zhongliā€™s title as an Archon is 岩ēŽ‹åøå› (Yanwang Dijun, roughly meaning God of King of Stone). The first two hanzi characters mean stone and king (hence the English localization of Rex Lapis, Latin for King of Stone). But that lacks the nuance and cultural significance in the Chinese title.
.
åøå› (dijun) is (I believeā€¦) a Daoist title of reverence added to a godā€™s name. So putting it together, 岩ēŽ‹åøå› can either be localized into pinyin as Yanwang Dijun (in a similar way that MDZSā€™s å¤·é™µč€ē„– Yiling Laozu is known as the Yiling Patriarch)ā€¦ Or Lord Stone King if you really want but that has different religious connotationsā€¦
åøå› is similar to ēœŸå› (zhenjun, another Daoist title for gods) which is often used for the Liyue 仙 (xian, localized as Adepti) characters. (In English, an adept, plural form adepts, refers to someone whoā€™s very skilled at something. It seems in the game 仙 includes both Adepti with animal forms and Adepti with human forms, and 仙äŗŗ xianren specifically refers to Adepti who appear human, like Xiao.)

As a sorcerer, Shiki is no stranger to dealing with unexpected situations on her assignments. Itā€™s easy for missions to go awry, and a sorcerer must be able to adapt to the rapidly-changing circumstances ā€“or die, usually.
Being stranded in a different world is still stretching things, though.
Shiki is not in the habit of lying to herself. Especially not when the truth is clear to see. Perhaps there are places in China where wild mint grows tall enough to cover a young childā€™s height, but sheā€™s fairly certain that slimes and burrowing dragon-creatures are not part of the local wildlife in any place on Earth. And thatā€™s not even mentioning the strange elemental flowers that tunnel easily through the earth to launch aggressive surprise attacksā€¦
But the young man traveling with them is clearly used to dealing with such creatures. Xiao dispatches anything that attacks them with ease, unwaveringly calm and brutally efficient. Shiki thinks that he might be the most skillful spear-user that sheā€™s ever seen ā€“not that there are very many sorcerers who wield spears, most preferring swords as Shiki does. But thereā€™s still something about the way with which the young man wields his weapon that hints at a preternatural grace, even by a sorcererā€™s standards.
ā€¦ Even compared with Satoru-niichanā€™s movements, which is a little alarming to consider. But it does explain how heā€™d killed Patch-face with minimal injury to himself.
Shiki readjusts her grip on Muta-san, taking a moment to reinforce her body with cursed energy to restore her flagging strength. Physical power is not her strong suit, and Muta-san is heavy, especially with the increased mass from hisā€¦ transformation, courtesy of the late Patch-face. Sheā€™d actually ended up cutting off another portion of his monstrous body in order to make it easier to carry him around with her, but now sheā€™s wondering if she shouldā€™ve cut off a larger portion of his dismembered torsoā€¦
Shiki had been careful to avoid severing any of Muta-sanā€™s lines, and her cursed technique lapse would prevent him from dying on her. Shoko-san should be able to put him back together and keep him alive, right?
ā€¦ Although, itā€™s not as if Shiki can call Shoko-san for assistance right now, what with the current issue of being in another world and all.
She supposes that itā€™s fortunate she encountered Xiao, who both speaks Japanese ā€“somehow, inexplicably, although the accent is a little strangeā€“ and is amenable to lending his assistance, even despite the entire mess with the Special Grade cursed spirits.
Heā€™d fallen silent for a moment after Shiki explained her situation.
ā€œā€¦ It would be remiss of me to ignore your situation, considering the circumstances,ā€ heā€™d finally said. ā€œI do not have the solution to your problem, butā€¦ perhaps the other adepti would. I will guide you to Jueyun Karst. Consider it repayment for protecting the people of Liyue, when it was not your responsibility to do so.ā€
ā€œI am a sorcerer. Itā€™s a sorcererā€™s duty to fight curses and protect humans.ā€
A lesson, a mantra thatā€™s been drilled into her since childhood. The response is reflexive, almost.
Xiao had nodded silently, with a faint flicker of something in sharp golden eyes that made it clear he also understood, then turned and beckoned her to follow.

Hi! How are you?
I have an interesting request: "3
Can I request Baizhu with a half-adeptus reader (male, but , if you want, you can use gn) .
This is the story of a young Baizhu who saves a little bird from bullies. The bird, blind in one eye, recovered from severe wounds. The bird became a friend for Baizhu. Then... The bird suddenly flew away to freedom. Baizhu matured and became a doctor. Suddenly, a reader (blind in one eye) comes to ā€œBubuā€ and becomes an assistant for Baizhu. The reader loves to pamper Baizhu in all things and will complete even difficult tasks. The reader cares for Baizhu and truly loves him. As a result, they fall in loveā¤
The phrase will do hereā€œYou saved me when I was dying. You gave me the meaning of life. You helped me not to lose faith in the kindness of people...ā€(sorry about my bad Inglis... )
Hello Anon, I'm doing well, thank you! Also, don't worry about you English, you did a wonderful job with your request! I must confess that I wonder if you also write since you came up with such a complete plot for your request! Either way, I wrote this with a gender neutral reader since I'm not really comfortable writing a male reader, I hope you don't mind since you mentioned I could. I hope you enjoy!
Waiting - Baizhu
Type: Gender-neutral reader/ half-adepti reader/ fluff/ request

Baizhu didnā€™t really know how long ago it was that heā€™d rescued a bird from a group of cruel youth that were toying with it. But watching Qiqi as she stared at finches with such gentle fascination reminded him of this little friend.
The bird had been blind in one eye, and its wounds had been severe. But heā€™d carefully cared for it. Feeding it and bandaging its injuries. Teaching it to fly once more, even though it had lost one of its bright little eyes.
It had been such a cheerful little bird. Always tweeting merrily and singing its lovely little song as it had perched on his shoulder.Ā
Back then, heā€™d thought it would be his eternal friend, by his side till the very end. But it had flown away. Abandoning him for the freedom of the blue skies.
It was after that that Baizhu had become a doctor and met Changsheng, but he never forgot that little bird that had been his first patient.
And perhaps that was why he had immediately recalled the little bird when youā€™d shown up one day at Bubu Pharmacy and become his assistant.
Just like that little bird, you were blind in one eye and eternally cheerful. You would hum to yourself as you worked, adding an easygoing joy to the pharmacy.
Most everyone adored you. Baizhuā€™s gentle assistant, who doted on Qiqi, cared for patients equally, and seemed like an old friend to Baizhu from your very first day by his side.
Baizhu could rely on you for anything; no matter how difficult it was, you could do it. You were capable with medicines, swift with deliveries, and a source of comfort for those with the very worst of conditions.
You could even convince upset little children to take their medicine, and you never failed to have tea ready for Baizhu after one of his more intensive treatments.
It was obvious to anyone who saw you and him together, you doted on the doctor. Many whispered of your relationship, while others were satisfied to view you as another kind soul, perfectly matched to be by Baizhuā€™s side.
But Baizhu had noticed far more than your numerous charms. There were also your less-than-human traits.
Animals never fled your presence, and birds were known to flit over and sing along to your soft humming.
And then there was the way that you somehow knew numerous things about Baizhu from your first day at Bubu Pharmacy.Ā
Be it his favorite tea, the candied fruits he used to help him handle the bitterness of his medicines, or his relationship with Changsheng, he knew them all.
But Baizhu was never one to look a gift horse in the mouth or question his own luck. Sometimes good things happen, and you just accept them. It was something Baizhu viewed as a lucky little blessing. And it was easy to view you that way, with how you doted and cared for the doctor.
But as he looked your way, he found himself tilting his head with a quiet smile, ā€œYou know, my first patient was actually a bird.ā€
You blinked in quiet surprise at his words, before you glanced over at where Qiqi stood, watching the finches silently, before looking back his way.
Baizhu chuckled at your silent surprise, ā€œIt was a long time ago, back when I was still very young. It had gotten hurt when some kids caught it.ā€
He glanced back over at the little girl by the window, feeling his smile turn wistful, ā€œIt left me not long after it had fully recovered, but that little bird inspired meā€¦ Itā€™s probably why I went on to become a doctor. I donā€™t actually know how much longer it lived after it left me thoughā€¦.ā€
He trailed off, shaking his head at his own nostalgic musing, somehow feeling you might not like to be compared to such a fragile creature as the bird was, even if both of you were important to him now, be it as a fond memory or current companion.
But then you smiled, drifting closer before speaking to him in a quiet whisper, ā€œYou saved me when I was dying. You gave me the meaning of life. You helped me not to lose faith in the kindness of peopleā€¦ā€
You trailed off, your gaze dropping towards the floor as Baizhuā€™s eyes widened, a thought entering his mind. Ridiculous and seemingly impossible, but unshakeable.
Perhaps there was a reason you and that little bird seemed so intrinsically linked within his mind, as laughable as it seemed.
But all at once, Baizhu felt like he was that little boy who had mourned the loss of his friend that had flown off into the blue sky once more.
ā€œYouā€¦ā€ He hesitated as you shifted, slowly meeting his gaze once more with the slightest of smiles.
ā€œIn truth, I am a half-adepti and capable of transforming into a birdā€¦ I would not have made it through those days if it werenā€™t for you, and Iā€™ve never forgotten how you saved me,ā€ You shifted, tilting your head in a way that perfectly reminded him of the bird as he stared at you in silent awe. Hardly able to even find the words.
ā€œThank you, Doctor Baizhu, and Iā€™m sorry I kept you waiting for so long,ā€ Those words were all it took for his breath to catch slightly before he felt himself smile. Still stunned, but somehow finding the words as his hands found yours.
His fingers linked themselves carefully as he held your gaze, eternally grateful that you had started him on his path towards medicine and that you had returned to him, as he spoke in an impossible soft voice, ā€œAnd for you, I would have continued waiting for eternity.ā€

You were merely an acquaintance to the Geo Archon, nothing more, right? Those momentarily soft gazes and his polite mannerisms werenā€™t exclusive to you, right? Well, thatā€™s what you thought.
As a more obscure goddess in the land of Liyue, you didnā€™t expect nor convince yourself that the most beloved God would take an interest in you, it was rather unrealistic, even for a divine being.
So why did your beloved friend Guizhong insist on you meeting him? Or for the Adepti to respect you so much? It all seemed perplexing to you, something the most eccentric of architecture you could create, or the theatrical arts with a twisted interpretation, wouldnā€™t compare to.
It resembled a moth around lanterns, a thought which wouldnā€™t leave your mind and almost felt essential that it should be enlightened to you. This feeling only returned stronger when you were conversing with Guizhong on Mt. Aocang, accompanied with teapots brewing with exquisite teas and offerings left on the stone table.
ā€˜Please, Dear Friend! Just take up my request, he would be so delighted to meet you!ā€™ She pleaded, propping her hands onto yours. ā€˜Morax is especially fond of the arts, which you specialise in.ā€™ You only sighed anxiously, wiping off the non-existent dust on your lilac hanfu. Now she understood your hesitation.
She silently stood from her seat, making her way over to you as she began to comb through your hair therapeutically. Her dainty fingers arranged your hair into a neat plaited updo, securing an aurate, floral hairpiece within it. Guizhong smiled fondly, turning you around by your shoulders to face her.
ā€˜Do not fret, i will take care of that, for now let me help you get ready.ā€™ She comforted, producing a small pouch from her pocket, pulling various jewellery and make-up items from it. From your soft, painted lips to your violet, complimentary eyeshadow, she took care of it.
ā€˜There we areā€¦Perfect!ā€™ With a final additive of fragrance, Guizhong admired her work. She thought you always looked gorgeous, especially when you were in regal attire. You greatly appreciated her compliments, reflecting them back at her.
ā€˜Apologies, am i interrupting?ā€™ A husky, deep voice remarked. Although you have only heard from your companions regarding him, the gentle undertone in his voice came as a surprise.
ā€˜Ah, Morax! Look who iā€™ve brought with me!ā€™ Guizhong introduced, turning to face you towards him by your shoulders. You wondered how obvious the flush across your face was. When he had came closer, you bowed slightly as a wordless acknowledgment.
At first glance, you couldnā€™t help but notice his golden, intricate eyes, or his arms which were decorated in the same manner. Maybe how defined his features were through that thin shirt of hisā€¦
ā€˜Itā€™s a pleasure to meet you, Morax, please accept this gift.ā€™ You quietly offered, retrieving the decanter of osmanthus wine you had brought with you after learning how fond he was of the drink. His eyes seemed to flick from you to the bottle, repeatedly before graciously taking it from your hands.
ā€˜Thank you dear, why donā€™t you come with us?ā€™ Morax suggested, who would of known he was such a gentleman? All throughout the indulgent conversations you two had, partially fuelled by Guizhongā€™s futile attempts at matchmaking, it was as if you could trace the path the archonā€™s irises took upon you.
Despite the awkwardness you three displayed, you considered this meeting a success! Aside from the obvious chatting about duties as a diety, you found Morax had a moreā€¦refined personality. His love for nature and tradition held above all, you could only feel flattered as he expressed his admiration for your speciality.
Gatherings such as this occurred more frequently as eons flew past, from small talk to teases, this trio of yours grew inseparable. The aged stone table brought all sorts of memories back to you.
ā€˜Checkmate, again!ā€™ You giggled, watching Rex Lapisā€™ eyes widen for the sixth time that duel, he breathlessly chuckled back, resting his chin in his palm, defeated. Seems he left the King open to attack carelessly.
ā€˜As expected, nobody could beat the goddess herself in her own game.ā€™ He responded, watching you reposition the pieces upon the chess board once more, grinning at his statement.
ā€˜Who knows? Perhaps in a few centuries you will surpass me in my skill, even if i might not be around to witness such.ā€™ You casually mentioned, not noticing how Moraxā€™s heart dropped in in his chest. A life without you? Never, even erosion couldnā€™t take you away from him, it wouldnā€™t dare.
He reached across the table to intertwine his fingers with yours, ā€˜Please darling, do not say such things, iā€™d break a contract if it meant keeping you here with me.ā€™
So why, why did you leave him alone, again? Why did he have to witness your limp figure in a field of bloodshed and decaying flora? Why wasnā€™t he there to hear your last words? The burning question in the abyss of his heart, Why did he leave his feelings for you so late?
You could of roamed the bustling streets of Liyue Harbour, watch the lanterns illuminate the sky like constellations that could manipulate your destiny to be less tragic. Zhongli wouldnā€™t have to traverse alone, rather with you, once more.
He couldnā€™t help the blur of his vision as the checkerboard infront turned against him. Casting his gaze downwards, this was your last request and he couldnā€™t even fulfil it? The younger male duelling him panicked seeing how forlorn Zhongli appeared.
ā€˜Wait, Xiangsheng! What happened? Did i do something wrong?ā€™ Childe frantically insisted, attempting to sympathise with the retired archon. A simple dismissal from him, shaking his head.
ā€˜Childe, Have you ever lost someone youā€™ve loved so dearly?ā€™ Zhongli confessed with a shaky voice, shimmering tears freely flowing from his tired eyes for the first time in eons. He hoped that wherever your soul resides, you wouldnā€™t forget his affection for you, as Morax and Zhongli.

sumeru's cast feels like a family, one we haven't seen since mondstadt. in mondstadt it really felt like it was that group of people vs the world. then you get to liyue and there isn't a set group of people (unless you count the teenagers plus hu tao who are all friends) that feels like a family. then in inazuma it's the yashiro commission and the resistance against raiden. in sumeru it feels like we finally found another unified group of people. dehya, cyno, alhaitham, tighnari, collei, candace, nilou, kaveh. they're a family. the sumeru cast feels closer (excluding mond) than the other nations and it's really nice to see.
