Dalida - The Beloved European Singer’s Calabrian Roots
Although she became famous worldwide as Dalida, she was born Iolanda Cristina Gigliotti in Cairo, Kingdom of Egypt, on 17 January 1933.
What is Dalida's Calabrian connection? Her father Pietro Gigliotti (1904–1945) and mother Filomena Giuseppina (née d’Alba; 1904–1971) were born in Serrastretta, Calabria, in Italy. Pietro studied music in school and played violin in taverns; Giuseppina was a seamstress.
Dalida was born in Egypt after her parents settled there, a move they made so that her father could pursue his career as a concert violinist.
By birth, Dalida automatically gained Italian nationality through jus sanguinis of both Italian parents.
Dalida singing the traditional Calabrian song "Calabrisella mia" (translation: "My sweet Calabrian girl") with actor John Dorelly on Italian national television:
She and her parents have maintained a strong bond with their roots over time, not only emotional, but also cultural and bureaucratic.
Dalida, in fact, even after moving to France, maintained her Italian citizenship and became French, with dual citizenship, only with her marriage to Lucien Morisse in 1961.
Dalida's visit to that small mountain town in Calabria, where her parents were born, Serrastretta, was unforgettable.
Tumblr media
The singer decided to include an extra charity concert date in Catanzaro in her Italian tour, precisely to travel for the first time to the town that was the birthplace of her loved ones. Here she visited the house where her parents lived before moving to Egypt:
Tumblr media
And she also met her cousins and her great-aunt who was still alive, played the tambourine and embraces the football team that bears his name.
Tumblr media
The much idolized Dalida, the first woman to win the Platinum Record and for whom the Diamond Record was created, took to the stage of the Municipal Theatre of Serrastretta. All the newspapers talked about it. And at the moment of her departure from Sant'Eufemia station (modern Lamezia Terme), the tears flowed freely, so much so that a few days before the end of the tour, Dalida wrote to the mayor.
A shot that immortalizes Dalida's visit to the mountain village of Serrastretta, photographed next to the then mayor, Menotti Mancuso (1962)
Tumblr media
«I would like to express to you again all the joy I felt in getting to know my family's town - wrote Dalida following a visit to Serrastretta in the 1960s -, and thank you for the warm and enthusiastic welcome you gave me. I will never forget the emotion I felt in finding myself among all of you and I ask you to pass on, both to my cousins and to all the inhabitants of Serrastretta, the thanks that come from the bottom of my heart."

Tumblr media
Dalida spent her early years in Egypt’s bustling Italian Egyptian community but she lived most of her adult life in France.
Beloved singer both in Italy and France, unforgettable queen of the Paris Olympia, during her career she sold over 170 million albums all over the world, also earning the first diamond record in history in 1981, created specifically for her.
Away from the spotlight, however, many great sorrows accompanied his life, which was interrupted - at the age of 54 - on 3 May 1987 by an overdose of barbiturates. «La vie m'est unbearable. Pardonnez moi/Forgive me, life is unbearable for me" wrote Dalida in her farewell note, found on the bedside table of her bedroom, in the villa at number 11 bis Rue d'Orchampt in Montmartre.

London, Part 1: June 17-22, 2024
It's been a long time since I traveled alone without having work or family or a con or something to guide my agenda. I landed in London with tickets to a couple of shows, but otherwise just open-ended days I could spend as I like. This is my favorite way to travel, whether alone, with my partner, or with a friend. I love being able to sleep as late as I like and do whatever the mood strikes each day.
The day I arrived, I took it easy. I took a shower and a nap, then found a place with fantastic steak & ale pie for dinner and wandered to a local park that had a beautiful Japanese garden. I was surprised to find the sun rose at 5 a.m. and set around 10 p.m. each day - earlier and later than I'm accustomed to, even in the height of summer in Maryland.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another happy surprise were the intersex-inclusive pride flags prominently displayed when I entered my hotel, the Premier Inn (London Kensington - Olympia).
Tumblr media
Side note on Premier Inn: I stayed at several of them during my travels. They're a budget hotel chain in the UK that's very queer-friendly, clean, secure, comfortable, quiet, and I had very good experiences at every location.
Once I had a good night's rest, I asked myself: "What do I want to do today?" And the answer to that question was "Go shopping." I was keen to check out Camden Market, a sprawling collection of small, quirky shops and restaurants in London. One of my favorite clothing stores, Psylo, is there, and I wanted to buy myself a cool outfit. Which I did!
Tumblr media
I also got an artsy photo taken of my eyeball to gift to my partner.
I had lunch at The Cheese Bar. It was fantastic.
Tumblr media
There were some truly wild shops in Camden Market that were visually impressive:
Tumblr media
I had a ball exploring the shops and little eateries (I even got a Pasteis de Nata, a kind of custard tart I fell in love with in Portugal a few years back), and I could've spent an entire day there, but I was restless and eager to see more stuff, so I ended up wandering to the nearby London Zoo. It was a pretty sweet zoo with lots of different animals and habitats represented. There was a free-roaming tamarind inside the rainforest building, which was cool to see up close. (I have a video, but Tumblr limits you to uploading only one video per post, boo.)
I wandered through Queen Mary's Rose Garden after that, and stopped by the gorgeous Daunt Books, which specializes in travel books.
Tumblr media
London definitely has an amazing bookshop scene. The next day, I visited 10 more of them, focusing on occult bookshops. I found my books in stock at a few of them (squee!) and chatted with the owners as I signed them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was also delighted to see Pamela Colman Smith's fireplace at Treadwell's:
Tumblr media
And Gerald Gardner's original meeting place at the Atlantis Bookshop:
Tumblr media
I loved visiting these bookshops, especially if they carried my friends' books. It warmed my heart to see their books in another country.
I also teared up a bit visiting Gay's The Word, the UK's oldest LGBTQ+ bookshop, which was featured in the movie Pride (2014). I was thrilled to see they carried my friend Tamsin's book.
Tumblr media
I also checked out the Vagina Museum. I'd followed them on social media for years, so it was really nice to visit and support them in person. It's small, and in kind of a rough location, but it's worth a visit.
That day, I had the best fish and chips of my entire life at The Crown & Anchor, which I mistakenly thought was the pub in Ted Lasso when I found it on Google Maps (turns out they renamed a different pub with that name for the show). Holy crap, I want to eat that specific fish and chips the rest of my life. Every other time I had fish and chips on the trip, it failed to live up to this one. I got spoiled early. It was so buttery and crisp and utterly perfect.
The next big trip highlight was seeing a production of Much Ado About Nothing at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. It's a reconstruction of the Globe from the Elizabethan era. I sprung for a seat with a cushion(!) on the second level, and I had a great view of the fantastic production. I'm so glad I got to see this specific play, because it's my favorite. The cast was amazing, and seeing it in that theatre was a deeply moving experience, like stepping back in time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
youtube
They also had one of the rare original folios of Shakespeare's plays on display:
Tumblr media
As if that experience didn't give my brain enough happy chemicals, afterwards I went to Dopamine Land. Dopamine Land is a temporary exhibit/experience available all over the world, where you wander through about 10 different rooms that stimulate and soothe your senses in different ways, including a giant, adult-sized ball pit. I really liked the first room, which was all mirrors and color-changing dangling lights.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next day, I visited Tate Britain with my friend Beckett, who has been an online friend for the past decade, and is both a fantastic musician in her own right and also a big supporter of my band, the Misbehavin' Maidens. She and her wife met me at the museum and we got to do one of the LGBTQIA+ tours. It was a super interesting tour focusing on a handful of pieces by queer artists, with queer themes expressed in the pieces. Apparently, each of the LGBTQIA+ tours is different, so I'd definitely go back and do it again.
Another highlight of Tate Britain was seeing The Lady of Shallott painting by John William Waterhouse, which I think was on the cover of one of my English Lit textbooks in college.
Tumblr media
After the museum, we went to a pub and I had my first Sticky Toffee Pudding! It was delicious - served with salted caramel ice cream. (I developed a preference over the course of the trip, though, to have it served with custard.)
Tumblr media
My first Tube ride made me giggle, incidentally:

Former Bellingham Library
There's a small brick building in Bellingham, on Route 126, right next to the town hall. It was built in 1930, once housed the town's public library, and is currently home to its historical commission. It is also haunted, with ghostly occurrences reported there since 1975.
During the library's tenure in the building, a large unabridged dictionary sat open on a sturdy table. Each evening, the librarians would close the big book before locking up the building for the night. They would come in the next day and find the dictionary open again. Those with a skeptical mind might think they is simply forgetfulness on the part of the librarians, and they may be, but other strange events also occurred here.
Occasionally the staff would come in to find that chairs had been moved from their usual spots, and books would sometimes be lying scattered on the floor. The librarians may have forgotten to close the dictionary or might possibly not have recalled moving a chair, but no librarian would leave books strewn around a floor.
One of the more frightening events happened one evening when only two librarians were in the building-one on the main floor and the other in the lower-level children's room. The librarian upstairs heard a voice clearly say, "Excuse me," from right from right behind her. When she turned around, no one (living) was standing there. She went downstairs to ask the children's librarian-the only other person in the building-what she wanted, but she replied that she hadn't been upstairs nor had she said a word. This event would continue to play over and over again, with always the same two words, "Excuse me."
In 1989, the library moved to its new location on Blackstone Street Historical Street, but the ghost, it seemed, stayed behind. The Bellingham Historical Museum moved into the building, bringing with them artifacts donated from around the town.
Mr. Ernie Taft is the chairman of the Bellingham Historical Commission and has witnessed a few unexplainable events in the old building. "A walking cane that belonged to a prominent Bellingham citizen is in our collection," Taft said. "The night before, this cane was in its proper place, but the next morning the top of the cane-which is screwed on-was found lying on the floor at a considerable distance from the bottom part."
That is not the only unexplained event Taft has witnessed. "Back in 1989, someone donated three theater tickets from the Old Olympia Theatre in Woonsocket, Rhode Island," he said. "That evening the tickets were left upon the desk. The next morning when I came in, I found the theater tickets ripped to pieces and lying on a pile on the desk." Perhaps the ghost was giving the show a big thumbs-down from beyond?
Though the great big dictionary is no longer in the building, it seems pranks are still played there. Doors that are securely closed the night before will be found open, and books in the historical commission's collection will go missing and then reappear. While it's not known for sure who or what might be causing these events, it definitely haunts the mind of the building's living residents, if only once in a while.

CMAT played the first of her sold-out four show residency at the 3Olympia Theatre in Dublin last night. The acclaimed songwriter, who’s currently touring her stellar album Crazymad For Me, brought out all the stops in a fun filled show with all the energy, melodrama and sing-a-long moments that have brought CMAT to prominence. TLMT was there to cover the show. All photos by Stephen White.

Swansea Sound share new 'Toxic Energy' single
Toxic Energy is a punk song, a pop song.  It’s also a duet between Terry Hall* and Elon Musk.  Terry (Hue Williams) still fears for his safety on the streets of the concrete jungle. Elon (Amelia Fletcher) does his best to make Terry’s anxieties worse.
The strange sound at the end of the songis a recording of a Tesla Cybertruck accelerating, losing control, and exploding.
The B-side, Dinosaur Bones, is a short song about species extinction.
The cassette comes in two versions, both with very special artwork. Mark James has designed the UK/German version for Skep Wax and Formosa Punk. Jimmy Ulvenes has designed the US version for Sm Craft Advisory.
*Terry Hall RIP.  The Specials’ 1979 track ‘Concrete Jungle’ was a perfect, honest expression of fear of neo-Nazis on the streets of the UK.  Terry later became famous in the US as the co-writer of ‘Our Lips Are Sealed’ with Jane Wiedlin.  We salute him.
Swansea Sound reunite Hue Williams and Amelia Fletcher, the original singers of cult 1990s UK indie band The Pooh Sticks. Quickly becoming a popular fixture on the UK indie scene, Swansea Sound have released two acclaimed albums (Live At the Rum Puncheon and  Twentieth Century), and have recently recorded live sessions for 6Music (UK) and WFMU (US), as well as completing a tour of the US East Coast.
Described as ‘an indiepop miracle’ by All Music, Swansea Sound combine a witty, sardonic, very contemporary lyrical attack with timeless guitar-pop songwriting. Louder Than War declared them "An essential broadcast from the forefront of the indiepop resistance." The band hail from Swansea (Wales) and Kent (England).
The single precedes a tour of West Coast USA in October and the UK in November/ December.  The live experience is unmissable, with Hue and Amelia playing off each other, sometimes duetting, sometimes harmonising, always entertaining. Meanwhile the band (Rob Pursey – also Heavenly, Bob Collins – The Dentists, Ian Button - Death In Vegas) kick up an infectious melodic racket.
Track 1: TOXIC ENERGY
Track 2: DINOSAUR BONES
