I always feel so frustrated with how unimaginative Marvel is with Remy, the only interesting things he's had is New Sun and X-Factor. Idk if this is true, but I read there was some rumor that Remy was gonna be an alter ego of Sinister, which would've given the writers more to work with imo. I think why some writers like Rogue and Erik more since they're much easier to work with outside of shipping. Same with Kurt, whom I sometimes think Remy is a pale imitation of (Catholic, martial artist, looks demonic, ladies man, even his powers suit a thief more than Remy's). If Kurt and Rogue weren't siblings, I'd sooner ship Rogue with him than Remy. Also, since Remy can only charge non-living things, it just makes him look weak and limited compared to other characters. I don't say all this shit to be mean, but I do get frustrated with how little material he's given, and can understand why his character is constantly put on the back burner in various media compared to other X-Men characters.

Yeah I remember reading somewhere they'd thought about doing something like that with Remy and Sinister and I think instead went with New Sun? Something like that. Also considered having him be ANOTHER Secret Summers Brother and I'm glad we didn't go this route lol we need to stop the Summers-Grey family tree from taking over the whole X-verse while we can.

I'll say that I don't feel that Remy is a pale imitation of Kurt mainly because I feel Remy deals with a lotta things that Kurt really doesn't on a personal level (true parental abandonment like no margali in SIGHT kinda shit, street life, crime, child soldier gangland shit, the greys and blacks of morality etc). You see more of those things in his solos which can even get a bit of a noir vibe to them which is nice but people just rarely wanna put in the time and effort with Remy. They rarely get him so they knock him down into say, the TAS 90s Gambit mold and call it a day. Which is just ....... no one wants that. Not Gambit Haters, not Gambit Stans.

And I get what you're saying about his powers but I think if he could charge living matter constantly like he can as New Sun homie would be so comically OP. I think the real issue here is just again, fuckers don't know how to write him so they go for whatever's easiest. So it's all lame, dumb and boring. If they let him get funky with his powers a bit more it'd could be super cool.

The pro of Rogue and Magneto when made scene partners is that they do have much more solid pre-existing characterizations, vibes and "story packs". As a writer you can walk in and already there's a couple of things you can do which are kinda like Rogue or Magneto Classics. Remy not so much so he ends up being like, Rogue's loser sidekick which sucks.

I feel you tho on the shitshow that is comic Rogue-Kurt dynamics. I too can see the appeal and charm of them as a romantic ship just as much as I can see them working wonderfully as a sibling pair. My beef around them has been for years that we get this Big Reveal that Mystique is Kurt's Bio-Mom but after he has his initial freak out for a couple issues in Excalibur or Uncanny or w/e he was in at the time I forget I just remember Amanda is there this whole thing-- IT NEVER REALLY COMES UP AGAIN BETWEEN HIM AND ROGUE AND THEY JUST ACT LIKE NORMAL AND OCCASIONALLY MENTION THEY'RE SORT-OF RELATED IN A WAY THAT'S MORE OF A REMINDER TO THE AUDIENCE????? LIKE IT'S FUN TRIVIA INSTEAD OF A PLOT POINT OR IMPORTANT RELATIONSHIP????

their first serious non-combat interaction was basically Kurt telling her to drop dead when she comes to Xavier for help when she's 17 and he's 21. He finally cuts her some slack after she ALMOST DIES IN A SUICIDE BY VILLAIN ATTEMPT to save Wolverine's fiance which makes Wolverine go "yeah okay fine your not total dogshit ig" so NOW Kurt'll stop being a raging asshole to the mentally ill teen lol (I'm shit talking Kurt rn but this is genuinely part of why I love him). Then there's MAYBE a couple of scenes that are outside of Action Stuff before the X-Men "die" in the late 80s and we get Excalibur where the two of them interact, the biggest of them is him FLIRTING WITH HER.

Uncanny X-Men (1963) #192

Now-- it's Kurt so this isn't anything really all that crazy. He jokingly flirts with like 90% of the X-Men. It's just the kinda silly funny quirky guy he is. But when I'm trying to think of say, Rogue-Kurt moments POST the Mystique Reveal that really feel like People Connecting or them Actually Being Siblings I draw a blank. This flirting scene is more iconic and stand out than basically all of their 00s and on interactions because it feels like a natural and very emotional conflict they WOULD have. He goofs around like he always does, her feelings get hurt, he realizes what he's done and feels like an ass and wants to fix it. EMOTIONS HAPPENED HERE, CHARACTERIZATION AND CONFLICTED OCCURRED. THIS CONFLICT AND LATER RECONCILIATION WILL LEAD TO A BETTER FRIENDSHIP AS WE GO! THANKS CLAREMONT!

Even at her wedding he's basically just like "well I AM her brother (remember? did you see that watchmojo listicle? have you read my wiki recently) and I AM blue so I should ALSO be in the wedding."

There's really not a lot of content of them like, hanging out, post 2004 or so. Some of that is just them being in different books but a lot of it just no one putting in the time or effort. X-Treme X-Men (2001) was all about Rogue looking into shit related to Destiny's writings and grappling with some Family and Personal Grief at the start there. Kurt shoulda been around for at least the first arc. Not thunderbird that absolutely nothing of a dude. It was the perfect setting to work on this issue that the 6 degrees of Mystique™ has made. One of the only other encounters between them I can think of that's post-90s is this:

And this interaction is set like VERY SOON after she joined the X-Men!!!! So it's not even a truly modern scene of them just vibing!!!!

To me, they're NOT siblings. Not in the way Kurt is with Amanda who's his ACTUAL adoptive sister or even in the way that Rogue is with Bobby, Sam or Scott who she just has Massive Broship Energies with and it's entirely because their 6 Degrees of Mystique™ is tenuous at best for how much it would really matter to them. Kurt HAS a family! He HAS siblings! Mystique abandoned/lost him and never looked for him or intended to tell him about their connection until forced to. He was raised by Margali and sees HER FAMILY as HIS family and they think the same! Like that's a standard ass adoptive family vibe.

Rogue is found by Mystique and Irene and raised by them in near isolation ON ANOTHER CONTINENT and is never informed about Kurt even in a past "i had a baby and lost him" tense kinda way or Graydon either. To her knowledge growing up she HAS NO SIBLINGS OF ANY KIND. She meets and fights against and then beside Kurt with no idea there's literally anything connecting them but that they're both mutants and x-men for like, YEARS even IN canon. Their whole relationship is rocky as shit for a WHILE there and then she gets YEETED SECRETLY TO AUSTRALIA AND HE THINKS SHE DIED. And let's be clear-- sure he's upset about her "death" too but he is MUCH more upset over the "deaths" of Logan, Ororo and Peter who he ACTUALLY NAMES WHILE TALKING ABOUT THIS GRIEF. Because you know... THESE RELATIONSHIPS ACTUALLY HAD FUCKING SCREENTIME.

Excalibur (1988) #1

He's not a monster, he does give a shit about her, but realistically over the years VERY little time has been put into building ANY relationship between Rogue and Kurt of ANY kind and it's frustrating when they really wanna act like they've got one. They don't. And it pisses me off because realistically Rogue/Kurt is less fucked up than Amanda/Kurt and guess which one is canon. Because of the 6 Degrees of Mystique™ people don't really ship them even tho there's an even more Yikes Kurt ship that's canon and Does Not Seem To Fucking Die, there's been no real development of ANY kind of relationship between him and Rogue, they've lived their ENTIRE lives not knowing each other or not really being more than coworkers and Kurt has NO INTEREST in truly claiming Mystique as his mother which is valid-- she fucking sucks.

I think Rogue/Kurt has legs and it's aggravating to me because I also really like Rogue & Kurt siblingship! I grew up watching Evolution! The sibling vibes and friendship that grow naturally up between them even BEFORE the Mystique Reveal in that show are just CHEF'S KISS. But in comics they IMPLY a familial connection that really.... doesn't mean much... and then they don't show these two deciding it to make it mean something or organically falling into a good sibling relationship... so they cut off the dynamic at the knees. You'll be shit on if you try to go off script and explore a more romantic angle because "ew they're rElAtEd" (ignoring all the previously stated flaws in that argument), there's nothing in canon that helps you figure out how friendly they even truly are so good luck building something canon compliant and they just generally don't seem to even give a shit about this dynamic at all so without dipping into other adaptations/AUs it can be hard to find something to even SAY about them.

Like I'd love to see Rogue and Kurt engage like, finding out what the Mystique Reveal means to them and how they see each other. I'd love to see them becoming friends and then family. I'd love to see them making that CHOICE. Because really in this context it's a CHOICE. She's not his adoptive sister, Amanda is. She's not his bio sister either in 616, that idea got shot down early on. She's a girl his bio mom who is a stranger to him raised an ocean away while he was raised in a loving home with siblings he adores. They met when she was a villain, he vehemently disliked her until she almost died saving someone's life then he tried to at least be civil and friendly. He finds out Mystique is his bio mother and asks Rogue about her but at the end of the day feels no real connection to Mystique or her life. His mother is Margali. The circus was his family. He cares about Mystique, Irene and Rogue because he's a decent human being but like, not in the same amount or extent as his adoptive family.

You can't have a scene of him flirting, even jokingly, with her in the 80s then think a 1993 mom reveal some how totally erases that vibe. Especially when you then put like no effort into exploring that GOLDMINE OF A PLOT THREAD. They've got so few non-combat just hanging out and engaging in character development interactions in 616 canon I can count them on my hands. At this point you could spin a wheel and decide to give them any relationship dynamic and it could genuinely work because there's no real content of them in comics to use contest it.

Like at her wedding they bring up that he's her brother again. That shouldn't be something we have a "turn to the camera and remind the audience" moment about. That should be as "well duh" to me as Bobby being her best man or Scott and Alex being brothers. It's not. It's just not. Their connection is just a factoid at this point and I hate it. You can't close off all these other potential dynamics for them (romantic/enemies/rivals/shitty roommates/etc whatever) by making them connected via Mystique, having an line every like, 10 years that reminds us they're "siblings" (are they tho? are they really? is that how this works?) and kinda vaguely imply they don't hate each other which is really just riding on the fact that pretty much ALL the X-Men like Kurt and we the audience like both of them and then GIVE US NOTHING WITH THAT STATED DYNAMIC!

MORE TIME AND EFFORT WAS PUT INTO MAKING NATE GREY SEE MADYLENE PRYOR AS HIS MOTHER OVER JEAN THAN HAS EVER BEEN PUT INTO MAKING ROGUE AND KURT FEEL LIKE THEY'RE EVEN FRIENDS LET ALONE SIBLINGS AND I'M VERY MAD ABOUT IT!!!! EITHER GIVE ME WHAT I WANT OR CUT THE REINS AT LET ME DO WHATEVER!!!

2021 ANNUAL FAVORITES

Hello, and Happy New Year! Welcome to my favorite thing to do every year, my Annual Favorites List. Looking back, I was surprised at how full of a year 2021 was for new media. As much as it may have felt like a blur or a carry-over from 2020, there was so much that 2021 offered that set it distinctly apart as its own year. Let’s get into it!

As always, any media that was widely released in the calendar year 2021 (that I personally consumed within the calendar year 2021) was eligible. This was ranked on January 7th, 2022, and unchanged since then (no matter what I end up thinking about it in the future.) I gave myself an extra week this year because everything is arbitrary!

Favorite Films

I watched 72 new movies this year that were released in 2021, up from 44 in 2020. I did get to catch pretty much everything I was seriously excited for - the things still on my Watch List, aside from The Beatles: Get Back, are all films I was more mildly interested in. That’s never happened before.

It was difficult to cull my top fifteen favorites down to ten. This year had a lot to offer, from genre blockbusters and indie dramas to lush comedies and a shocking amount of musicals. For more of my thoughts on movies, and to hear in-depth reviews of these ten, listen to my podcast Cinema Bums!

Favorite Records

Music was the hardest to whittle down to a short list this year. Recording seems to be the artistic industry least affected by the pandemic (obviously live music is largely off the table,) so it makes sense that music delivered so much more than films, video games, or anything that needs shipping or a computer chip.

Some of the absolute best records I heard all year (Tyler, The Creator; Wet; Arooj Aftab) didn’t make the list simply because I felt I hadn’t taken the proper time to get to know them as fully as I’d like to yet. Other records, like Halsey, Kacey Musgraves, and both K.Flay’s, I adored half of and the other songs didn’t connect with me very much.

It’s not lost on me that two of my favorite records of the year are EPs instead of LPs (and two more were in my top fifteen.) I know that I valued brevity this year, especially spending less time in the car or on my own. Records that were able to deliver a lot in little time really worked for me. Here are my favorites:

I played much less Nintendo Switch this year than I did in 2020 (and much less than I wanted to.) A lot of what I did play were local multi-player games, which I love but don’t tend to rank here. The two games I played the most were Hades and FUSER, both excellent 2020 releases that I just caught up on this year. Of the five 2021 video games where I did roll credits (I loved the first half of Metroid Dread but it was too difficult for me to beat - yet,) here are my favorites:

do they have a type? : Strong take-charge, people who are themselves. Honestly, if you are sassing him off there’s a good chance he’s just thinking wow...i’m screwed.

average relationship length:  .....ha ha ha. Okay, this is where it gets deep. Remy grew up as a street orphan who was USED && manipulated. Worse still he grew up in a religious community while being shunned && named  Le Diable Blanc (The white DEVIL.) He was abandoned by his parent's at the hospital because of his visible mutation && then stolen by his later adopted father && LEFT with a street gang. He was only adopted for real at 10, but his adoption was primarily because he proved to be a talented thief, the first time he was shown acceptance && love, given a home was based on his usefulness.

Remy at his core believes himself to be bad, the bad things he’s done just add to these beliefs, && for the longest time I don’t think he felt worthy of love. Man he wants it, he wants to be good, he wants to be loved (That’s why he can’t help but play at being the white knight to EVERY vulnerable girl who crosses his path, even if he knows they will screw him over.) Remy for the longest time believed himself unworthy of love or security, you see him, whenever he’s in a SAFE or stable place get this itch to screw it up, he gets this itch to do something dumb && he normally does it, it’s also why he always just accepted it when people put him down.

commitment level: It depends on the relationship, he’s screwed up in the past but right now I think if he were to enter a real loving relationship he’d be very committed.

opinion of public affection: Does he ever stop? Remy likes affection, like I said earlier, he’s hungry for affection.

past relationships?: A LOT of one nightstand && minor flings.  But the main committed relationships were Bella Donna, his ex-wife && childhood sweetheart. && Rogue, someone he’s always going to care deeply about (Verse dependent, but atm in the comics she’s also his wife && he’s always a little in love with her which is a pain when he tries to move on.)

favorite canon ship :  I quite like Gambit && Rogue, yes they are messy, but....he loves her :/ there are times when I’ve wanted him to move on, but she’s probably one of the closest people in his life, && Remy just loves her. They share a lot of experience && I think they often understand each other best. In the past what ruined them was their own personal insecurities, but right now they are in such a healthy place that it waters all my crops && it’s nice to see them both just happy && supportive of one another. (Also Remy will always be in Rogues corner && side, even if they aren’t dating, he will always care.)

favorite non-canon ship : haven’t done much with him for a while, but I’ve enjoyed the plotting && threads I’ve done with @galaeus​ these two could definitely work if they don’t screw themselves over first.

PIRATE VERSE - GENERAL SPECS !

In which Remy is the runaway child of a minor French noble family, and very pleased about it. Location varies, of course, and he has changed ships a few times; he typically seeks employment as a cabin boy / cook, because the lower he is on the pecking order, the less attention people pay him and the more stupid shit he gets to do on his own time. This is a little unusual, but most people don’t really say no to a voluntary underling. It also means that the social profile he’s keeping isn’t high enough for his family to find him.

In case you wanted to know how the runaway story went, he may or may not have stabbed his fiancé during a fencing match and promptly made out with said fiancé’s younger sister, who he liked much more, because he wasn’t terribly fond of the marriage his family had arranged. After that, he snuck out, and was sheltered in a harbor town by a local thief who taught him the trade for about a year before Remy decided he wanted to explore the world; he later would assume his surrogate father’s surname and continually visit him between his travels.

This is a thousand percent a period-based verse, which means his accent isn’t what we’re used to. Based on starting location and time, he speaks British English with a French accent, which is also pretty much the prettiest thing ever. The golden age of piracy spans roughly 1650 - 1730, while the British Conquest of French Acadia happened in 1710, and so everything takes place quite a bit before what would normally be noted as Remy’s typical background culture was really established.

Since it is such an early time, and Remy was raised in a closed background as he was, he isn’t really aware of the fact that he is transgender per se - he is well aware that he is much happier using a man’s name and being perceived as a man, but he simply isn’t in a time and position to realize that there is a deeper reasoning for that or that he even can properly identify as a man. He just knows what makes him happy, and that’s enough. He dressed as a man to leave, it worked for him, and then he kept it up since most sailors would certainly chuck a woman overboard and he liked it better.

He does experience difficulty breathing, chest pain, and the other typical complications that come with over-binding with non-flexible material. It’s not fun, but the alternative is worse.

Given his noble background and how stubborn he’s always been at doing exactly everything he shouldn’t, he has a high proficiency for swordsmanship and is quite adept with a rapier. It doesn’t exactly come up much, but when he has to defend himself it’s rather effective. He’s also very, very good with knives and lockpicks now - thanks, Jean-Luc. A precise shot, but has no real liking for guns.

Given how early girls tended to be married off in ye olde days, he’s still young enough to pass as a man very easily, or at least one young enough that he hasn’t grown much facial hair yet. I.e. he was in his mid-teens when he ran off, and by the time he starts sailing around, he’s in his early twenties and on. It also helps that he has somewhat of a baby face.

Tends to be rather acerbic, because the closer people get the closer they are to knowing his secrets, but is still in general reasonably friendly and tries to get along with most people.

Has very little tolerance for hard liquor and usually winds up in embarrassing situations after imbibing.

A little obsessive over his hygiene, which can get him picked on somewhat. 

Has bought into most sailing superstitions, other than the obviously ridiculous, and is superstitious in general.

Depending on progression and interaction, often mutinies and vies for the position of captain after about a decade’s worth of sailing and/or slowly working up the ranks.

Very prickly and easily aggravated by Val in particular; the two nearly murdered each other before managing their mutiny. Their interaction tends to be very volatile in the eyes of onlookers.

Who is your hardest muse to write? What makes it difficult? And who's easiest?

Kyle. Without hesitation, Kyle Reese is the hardest to write. Not because he’s difficult or hard to understand, but because he is a ball of angst and pain due to the way his canon is set up and the way his past was written, and very few people want to write with a muse like that. Kyle is a soldier in a war that has no end, who volunteered for what he knew was a one-way trip and probably a suicide mission without a shred of hesitation or concern for himself. His PTSD is worse than Bucky’s, and if you’ve taken even five minutes to consider the ramifications of what’s been done to Bucky Barnes you’ll know that’s saying something. Kyle is pain and angst and hurt and fear and terror and the cold willingness to do whatever is necessary to ensure survival, and that makes him difficult to write because very few people are willing to push through all of that to get to the happy fluff, and I can’t write the happy fluff without figuring out how he gets to that point first.I would love to write that out and play through it with someone. I have both a mundane!modern and a Marvel!modern AU for him to allow for that to happen, but it’s not something most people enjoy because it really is *a lot* of angst.

After him come Arthur/Aquaman and Erik/Magneto, mostly due to my not feeling as solid in their headspaces as I am with other muses on this blog. Erik is the worst in that regard, especially because his being Jewish is a huge part of his character and who he is as a person, and I am very much not Jewish myself. Trying to do him justice and not ignore that aspect of him makes it difficult for me to write him more often than not. Arthur has a similar issue, especially now that DCCU has given him a solid Maori heritage[thank you, Jason Momoa] that I refuse to take away from him even if I decide to do a straight New 52 verse on here. First of all I like it too much, and secondly I have some strong feelings about representation. 

Easiest to write honestly varies by the day, but on this blog it cycles through Remy, Caspian, Corwin [who I never get to write T^T], Conrad, and - surprisingly enough to me - Barney Barton.Remy is a muse who has always just flowed for me. I knew next to nothing about him when I first picked him up; literally all I had was ‘Gentleman-thief from New Orleans’ and I ran with that. Somewhere in there I found out half my headcanons were actually canon and well here we are. I adore him.Caspian is my little angel sunshine dweeb. Angst is possible with him but it’s difficult, which makes him a beautiful breath of fresh air next to literally all the rest of my muses XD He’s a joy and a love and just the reactions of people to him is a beautiful thing to watch.Corwin is the ultimate crossover muse, and I can’t even take credit for that. His canon is built for that. I can put him literally anywhere and be canonically justified in doing so. He’s a sassy, sarcastic smartass who really deserves far more screentime than I’m actually able to give him.Conrad is my self-insert. I’m not even going to lie. He was based loosely on me and shares most of my interests and desires, though his backstory is very different from my own. But he is a muse very near and dear to my heart and his headspace is very easy for me to find because...well. He’s me, mostly.Barney...was a surprise. Barney, again, is a muse I picked up on the fly. Like Remy, I really only knew one thing about him. That he was Clint Barton’s brother, and a bit of an asshole. I wasn’t even sure I was confident enough to bring him onto this blog, but I did it anyway and then I met @thedeafavenger, and then I met @hitsharder and now he’s just this solid presence in my head that speaks up just as much as Bucky or Loki do.

It was chaos.  It was like coming undone, fingers digging into his head and pulling at the fraying edges, tearing him apart and splitting him open, spilling him into the void – into the blackness that swallowed him whole, and he was drowning in it, in fear and rage and despair, in grief and loss and anguish and ANGER —  his breath rattled in his chest, a gasping, desperate sound as he lurched sideways, jerked upwards, hands flung out to his sides, and up, as if to shield himself from the dark – from the light, from the impending blow – his heart surged, and raced in his chest, pounding, his throat thick and dry and tight, icy tendrils of fear coiled in his chest, fire blossoming in his head, in his thoughts.  Rage, and rage –

   Memories crashed, compounded, contracting, pulsing in his head, vying for purchase and priority.   Chains, and cuffs, at his wrist and his ankles, shuffled through the prison halls, as so many of those that he had put away –  pain, a flare of it, at his neck, when he’d struggled, when he’d raged, panicked, at the last moment, as they had tried to press him onto the slab – a slab, where they would pull him, drag his consciousness, kicking and screaming from his flesh –  Not the dark.   Not the prison ward –  Too white, too silvery, too PASSIVE –  His gaze spun, taking in the room, the contents, simple, practically bare.  No windows.  No doors.  CONSTRUCT.  

  His gaze shifted, eyes still wide, chest heaving with struggled breaths, finally latching on to the other occupant of the room.   It took a moment, to register, to find words and names to go with the face, the unmistakable, distinctive crimson eyes.   “—   the fuck –”   His words were rough, and coarse, fingers dragging through his hair, scraping down his thigh, struggling to find some focus, some center, fighting the burn of tears in his eyes as he stared at the Meth.   “Is happening?”  

           Oh, gee, HM. He’s really glad he’s leaning against the wall, ’cause WOWIE, Elias is thrashing a bunch. Maybe unsurprising, given what Remy had learned of the CIRCUMSTANCES of his imprisonment - though he didn’t exactly have the personal details, whatever had been happening before his detective friend had been put on ice wasn’t likely to have been pretty.

“EVENING, ELIAS.” He offers the other a smile, not bothering to peel himself off the wall - the more distance he gives him, the better, he thinks. “WHAT’S HAPPENING - UH, LET’S SEE. YOU GOT INTO A REAL PICKLE, DIDN’T YA?”

A hand goes up, his fingers curling back down to his palm with every item. “YOU’VE JUST BEEN FRAMED FOR MURDER. YOUR GIRLIE PISSED OFF BANCROFT - NICE, BY THE WAY, HE DESERVES A FEW KICKS BUT YOU SHOULDN’T BE GETTIN’ THE SHORT END OF THE STICK. YOU WERE PUT ON ICE. I STOLE YOU PERSONALLY - YOU’RE WELCOME - AND REPLACED YOU WITH AN ACTUAL MURDERER’S STACK WITH A FALSE IDENTITY ON IT, ’CAUSE LET’S BE HONEST,SOMEBODY IS MAKIN’ DAMN SURE YOUR TRIAL DOESN’T HAPPEN FOR AN ETERNITY AND THEY AIN’T GONNA KNOW. BY THE WAY, MY REAL BUSINESS IS STEALIN’ SHIT, AND I’M TELLIN’ YOU THIS BECAUSE I DON’T THINK YOU BLAB EASY, SODON’T TRY AND SELL ME.”

Folding his arms over his chest, he grins at Elias, easy and open. “I SPUN YOU UP T’SEE IF YOU WANNA BE AWAKE OR NOT TO FIGURE OUT YOUR MESS. IF YES, I ALSONABBED A DNA SAMPLE AND I CAN CLONE YOU, BUT YOU’RE GONNA HAVE TO GO SYNTH FOR NOW. IF NO, I’LL ICE YOU AGAIN AND STORE YOU SAFELY UNTIL I CAN RETURN YOU TO WAIT FOR YOUR TRIAL. AND NO, BEFORE YOU ASK, THIS AIN’T T’GET A COP IN MY POCKET AND I DON’T EXPECT PAYBACK. I DON’T LIKE SEEIN’ GOOD PEOPLE GO DOWN, ESPECIALLY NOT IN THE NAME OF PANSY POLITICS. OTHER QUESTIONS, GO RIGHT AHEAD.”

   The LOOK that was cast in the Meth’s direction at his first few words might’ve been deadly, if looks could actually kill, a half snarl framing ivory teeth and canines still a little too long, a little too sharp for the consumers the human species had become.  “That much I figured out on my own BEFORE they shoved my ass in a hole,” he seethed, to the first of the marks that Remy’s fingers ticked down, but falling silent for the most part as his – apparently – THIEF – went down the list of ways in which Elias Ryker was extraordinarily FUCKED.   Honestly, what Remy LeBeau did to make his fortune was so far down on Ryker’s immediate list of priorities that he barely even registered the comments, filing bits and pieces of data away for future relevancy.  

    Stole –  him. His stack —  a momentary twist of an expression, almost disbelief, but then he was the living (as much as ever he guessed) proof right?  Stealing a stack, snatching a D.H.F. from prisoner storage was … in theory… as close to impossible as anything got.  But then.  Somehow, he wasn’t entirely surprised at much of anything right this exact minute.   “Not a cop –”  It was short, and terse, an ache in his chest and a sour taste in his throat at the words, his lips pressed tight, jaws clenched briefly.  “Not anymore, anyways.”  His tongue dragged over his teeth, moistened his lips, his breath steadying, slowly, his heartbeat forced slower, less sporadic as he fought his way to a center point.   “Bancroft – Ortega, what – what happened?  Is she –”  A twist in his chest again, a flood of memories, dancing in his mind’s eye, the memory that had played over and over in the days between his arrest and his being pulled.  

         ‘if you didn’t do this –’  If.   His eyes stung, violently, suddenly.  “Is she okay? What – what the fuck did Bancroft do?” God.  What did she do to Bancroft?  With her temper, barely controlled on the best of days, even with him there to be her counterweight –   “What politics.”

           “Calm down. I ain’t here t’fuck you over any more than you already been screwed.” This time he does step forward, comes to crouch in front of Elias, red eyes raking over him, slow and assessing. “Hey. Shh. Your girlfriend’s fine, promise - bit upset and such, but she’s fine.”

He offers the other a hand, a little awkward but entirely nonthreatening. “She ain’t been hurt. Bancroft came up with a shitty little guilt trip for ’er, but it ain’t gonna get her injured or nothin’. She ballsy, fussin’ at Miriam like a real spitfire. Let’s get you back in the real, huh? You’ll feel better in somethin’ like your own skin.”

Your skin, which is currently occupied by a complete wild card even by my standards.

“Politics, ’cause someone’s definitely playin’ Bancroft too. He’s comin’ up with shit that would never happen if he wasn’t being spoonfed. I dunno who yet. You comin’ out with me or nah, cher? We got a lot to talk about, but I ain’t givin’ you more to stress over unless you wanna stay out. If you wanna stay on ice, my schedule for the night’s gonna be tighter. Window t’sneak you back’s only so long.”

He barely held back a scoff at the Meth’s first comments, a half sneer pulling at the edges of his lip, his teeth bared briefly in a grimace.  It wasn’t so much that he doubted the truth of Remy’s words – he might have been the only Meth Elias had ever met whose word he might trust, but if the events of the last months had reminded him of anything, it was that nobody did anything for nothing and that everybody was out for themselves, one way or another.  He swallowed a breath, his hazel gaze coming to settle on Remy’s scarlet one for a long moment, forcing himself to concentrate on the words that were being offered, struggling to swallow the rage and impotence that caught and warred in his chest and in his head.   Kristin.   Kristin.  The look on her face --  His gaze cut away, his head ducking down as he struggled against the tears, a hand settling into Remy’s to pull himself upright, a heaving breath taken in and held for a long moment. 

Picking a fight with the oldest, richest, most powerful man in the known worlds.   Too little too late --  Guilt trip --  The words echoed, swallowed, held.  Too many questions.  Not enough time.  Or too much time.  Time.  “How long – how long have I been on ice?”  In the dark.  Drifting, thoughtless, weightless, drowning in the dark, in the emptiness.  His spine rippled with a shudder that he didn’t bother to try and repress.  “I’m not going back.”  Short. Blunt.  He was already out.  They’d already stripped him of his authority, his badge, tarnished what little reputation he hadn’t already ruined himself.   Somebody playing Bancroft?  That took guts, and balls, and power and influence – the kind of influence it took to tamper with Neo-C coding?  Maybe. “Not til this is settled, one way or the other.”

ALTERNATE UNIVERSE: MARAUDERS ( verse tag )

NAME: Remy Etienne LeBeau ALIAS(ES): Gambit  AGE: 37  AFFILIATION(S): Mr. Sinister’s Marauders ABILITIES: all canon abilities, with the additional capability of charging organic material via skin contact POINT OF DIVERGENCE: Remy rejoins the Marauders after the Morlock Massacre rather than abandoning Sinister OTHER: Remy’s default outfit in this verse is very much akin to his uniform as it appears in X-Treme X-Men, as shown in the banner above.

Following canon, after Remy was banished from New Orleans from killing his brother-in-law in combat at age 18 (although it was his brother-in-law that challenged Remy in the first place), he wandered for some time. Along the way, his powers began to develop, causing all matter to explode uncontrollably. Desperate for a solution, he sought out Dr. Nathaniel Essex (AKA Mr. Sinister), who had previously commissioned Remy and the Thieves’ Guild when he was a member. Sinister agreed to performing a surgery to dampen Remy’s powers, but in exchange, Remy would have to perform a series of tasks for Sinister. Remy agreed. 

Mr. Sinister removed part of Remy’s brain stem, which limited his powers to only charging through skin contact, and only with inorganic matter. The list of favors for Sinister is long, but perhaps the most significant is Remy’s contribution to gathering the first iteration of the Marauders. Remy went to each member individually to recruit them: Philippa Strong (AKA Arclight), Michael Baer (AKA Blockbuster), Kodiak Noatak (AKA Harpoon), Malice, Robbie (AKA Prism), Janos Questad (AKA Riptide), Victor Creed (AKA Sabretooth), John Greycrow (AKA Scalphunter), Kim Il-Sung (AKA Scrambler), and Vertigo. Remy stated adamantly that this would be the last task he would perform for Sinister. 

At the time, he had no idea why Sinister was gathering these people. However, Remy quickly realized the task they had been given upon guiding them to the Morlock community: slaughtering their entire group.  

In canon, Remy attempted to stop the Marauders (AKA yes, he literally tried to 1 vs. 10 a group of highly skilled killers) but only succeeded in getting the Morlock Sarah (AKA Marrow) out. 

In this alternate universe, while Remy did not participate in the Massacre (he was not, after all, commissioned to do it), he returned to Sinister instead of leaving. He cited his reasons as he recognizes when someone is gathering heavy hitters for something big. Remy is a self-proclaimed survivalist. He decided to throw in his lot with Sinister and the Marauders, even though their actions were far from his style. 

Still, he acclimated quickly--if not with some moralistic resistance. He usually stuck to thievery, but now that he was an official member of the Marauders, Remy was often tasked with doing Sinister’s dirty work along with the rest of them, which included forcibly harvesting mutant DNA through any means necessary. He quickly accrued his own body count. 

While killing was never Remy’s M.O., he becomes more and more used to the act as time goes on. Eventually, he began using his powers without much care of who would get caught in the crossfire, and regularly became a dependable member of Sinister’s Marauders. 

Eventually, upon Remy’s request, and after years of good work, Sinister agreed to return some of Remy’s abilities via surgery. Part of Remy’s brain stem was restored so he could now charge organic matter as well as inorganic matter, although skin contact is still required. 

Today, he is a well known and notorious criminal, thief, murderer, and villain. Remy never has had any association with the X-Men except for situations where the Marauders and the X-Men clashed. Heroism has effectively been stamped out from his person. 

It must also be noted that Remy still retains his flirtatious, conceited, arrogant, and impish nature in this universe. Further, he is far more problematic, is not afraid to be overtly offensive, and more or less doesn’t give a shit about someone else’s feelings as long as the situation suits him. Other lives mean little to him. He is very much a loyal henchman to Mr. Sinister.

In my ‘verse where Remy and Maria are intermittent lovers. He shows up on her doorstep every now and then, usually right when she’s least expecting him.

There was a light on inside her apartment. Maria spotted it as soon as she opened the front door, a glow permeating through from the bedroom to the foyer. Before she panicked, she fished her phone from her purse. Checked her text messages, and send another one.

Is that you or do I have a problem?

“It’s me, chère,” a deep voice called, and she let her shoulders relax, stuffed the phone back into her purse.

“Since when did you have a key?” She toed her shoes off, kicked them under the table.

“Since I am a thief, chère, the last thing I need is a key.” His voice was closer and she looked up to see Remy standing in the doorway to her bedroom, leaning on the doorframe with his arms folded and a smirk on his handsome face.

It had been many months since he last showed up and she was suddenly very glad to see him. She’d missed him and his particular brand of stress relief, especially since she’d started working for Stark and had to wrangle his gigantic ego on a regular basis. Dropping her purse on the table, she headed over to Remy and reached up to grab his face in her hands, pulling him down for a fierce kiss and then pushing at him, backing him into the bedroom, fully intending to shove him down on the bed and have her way with him.

Until a small voice said “Is this your friend?”

Maria froze, lips still plastered to Remy’s, her eyes popping open. Remy lifted his head and smiled apologetically down at her.

“Why,” Maria asked, “is there a little girl in my bed?”

She reckoned the girl was about ten, though she could be off by two or three years either way, she supposed. She didn’t have enough contact with children to be any kind of accurate judge. Dark eyes stared at her from beneath a tangled mess of dark hair.

“Because you do not have a spare bedroom,” Remy said reasonably. “Maria, this is Laura. Laura, this is Maria.”

They stared at each other in silence for a minute. “Yours?” Maria asked at last.

“No, she is the daughter of a friend. I am - looking after her for a while.”

“My dad is sick,” Laura said, her tone conversational. “Remy’s looking after me. He said we’d be safe here for a while.”

“Right,” Maria said after a pause. “Remy, could I see you in the kitchen, please?”

“Laura has super-hearing,” Remy said, not moving. “She’ll hear everything you say anyway. And she’s had far too much of people making decisions for her.”

“... okay then. What the… bleep?”

“I know the word fuck, too,” Laura said helpfully.

“Ah… thank you. How old are you?”

“Eleven.”

“Then you shouldn’t use words like that. Don’t, or I’ll wash your mouth out with soap.” Maria wagged her finger in Laura’s direction. Laura’s eyes widened and then she grinned.

“I like your girlfriend, Remy.”

“I’m not… you know what, that’s getting off topic. Remy.” Maria turned a penetrating glare on the man who was definitely not her boyfriend. Definitely not. “Explain.”

“Bad people have been experimenting with producing a new generation of mutants,” Remy said succinctly. “From gene samples collected over the years. As far as I know, none of mine was ever collected, but the same isn’t true for all of my friends. The lab doing the experiments is no longer in business, but the children - those who escaped - well, there are those who would pay a great deal of money for a child with the powers some of them possess.”

Maria looked at the slight, brown-haired girl curled up in her bed, and then back up at the tall mutant who was definitely not her boyfriend.

“You did quite right to bring her here, Remy. Do you like ice cream, Laura?”

Dark brown eyes lit up.

“Excellent. I’ve got some Phish Food in the freezer. Go and get it, and some spoons, while I get into my jammies, Remy. Then you can go sleep on the couch. Laura and I are going to have a girls’ night in.”

Smiling, Remy went to do her bidding. When he returned, the two were sitting in the bed together and Maria was using a comb and detangling spray to gently release the knots in Laura’s hair.

“Do I get to stay and share the ice cream?” He gave Maria a hopeful look, and she smiled at him.

“Until Laura says you have to go.”

“I’ll take it.” Settling into bed on Laura’s other side, Remy leaned in to kiss the top of her head, handing her the first spoon. “I’ve never yet met the girl who would kick me out of bed.”

Laura’s giggles surprised Maria, as did the dig in the ribs she delivered. “Maybe I should go sleep on the couch so you two can have the bed!”

“No chance,” Maria said firmly, setting the comb aside and grabbing the ice cream. “He snores,” she mock-whispered to Laura, who dissolved into giggles and snuggled down trustingly against her.

Remy didn’t bother denying the blatant untruth. Just smiled fondly at the two ladies in his life who mattered the most as they dived into the ice cream.

This month has just been hitting us over the head with "WTF?" moments on a daily basis, but in between I managed to put the show together - as you can tell, the finishing touches only made it in close to the end-of-month buzzer! While this is an all-Hip-Hop episode, I feel fairly confident that there won't be many people who know every track, so there'll be at least one new gem here for everyone. Fat Joe ft. The Terror Squad : The Hidden Hand

It's bleak, but it's life. The whole Terror Squad weigh in on this cinematic cut (produced by Spunk Bigga) from the "Don Cartagena" album. Packed with cautionary tales, observations on the state of society, and ending with a touch of advice, this very much has the air of the person that's been through a lot trying to stop someone else going down the same road. In my opinion, this is a very much underrated deep album cut.

Oddisee : No Rules For Kings (Inst)

From the "The Beauty In All" album we get this lovely instrumental, heavy on the cymbals and drum fills.

3rd Bass : Gladiator

I've just realised that I've only played 3rd Bass once before on the podcast, so there are some great tracks in their small catalogue still for me to share with you. Here's one I think you probably won't know - their contribution to the soundtrack of the 1992 boxing-themed film "Gladiator". DJ Daddy Rich makes the beat boom, and whoever it is on the hook is battling me in the low voice stakes :)

J-Live : Worlds Apart

"The white man's burden still the brown man's backache"? That's just fire. The amount of clever, insightful quotes on this track is just unbelievable. It's well worth sitting and listening carefully to this one a few times - nothing but facts right here from J-Live on this Oddisee-produced piece from his "Around The Sun" album. 

Melanin 9 ft. Roc Marciano : White Russian

Melanin 9 is a UK MC who had somehow escaped my notice up to now but I stumbled upon this track with Long Island's street rhyme specialist Roc Marciano and knew I had to include it! The production by Anatomy channels the feel of the SP1200/S950 90s golden age; I love it, apart from the awkward 5-bar intro ;) Melanin and Roc go stream-of-consciousness in fine style on this one, taken from the "Magna Carta" LP.

Apollo Brown & Skyzoo ft. Joell Ortiz : A Couple Dollars

"The Easy Truth" was one of the picks of 2016 and the combination of Skyzoo, a real lyric fan's choice, and Apollo Brown's soulful production is a match made in Hip-Hop heaven. Adding Joell Ortiz to this story of the lure of money when you start off broke just takes the track over the top. The album is definitely worth checking!

Kappah : Supafly

Kappah from the Beatfonics crew flips some Curtis Mayfield inside out right here and adds some solid bass underneath for a highlight from the "Beatxploitation" beat tape. Heavy business as usual coming out of Italy.

Nas : Thief's Theme

A dark favourite, and an appropriate one as we see the dawn of a new kleptocracy! This was a great single from the "Street's Disciple" album - there might have been a radio mix, but you couldn't call this a radio record. Salaam Remi harnesses the "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" sample (as played by the Incredible Bongo Band) while Nas goes full crime rhyme for three verses - and on the hook, re-using some of his own famous lines from "The World Is Yours". The video for this one is well worth a watch too!

Camp Lo : A Piece Of The Action

The recently released "On The Way Uptown" is the demo album Camp Lo recorded that got them their record deal and paved the way for the classic "Uptown Saturday Night". Well worth picking up if you're a fan, as you can hear early versions of some tracks that made the official album as well as others that were borrowed from or reworked. There's also a scattering of "lost tracks", and what later became B-sides. This tune, I believe, has been out on white label but is a tough one to get so I was very happy to find it included. Geechi and Sonny Cheeba showcase their back-and-forth skills on a great foreshadowing of killer records to come, while Ski gives us some boom-bap drums over a cleverly-chopped, sneaky sampling of a jazz classic. Heavyweight.

Talib Kweli : Gutter Rainbows

I think the world "lush" would fit this one when it comes to the production! M-Phazes brings a dramatic 70s flair to the title track to Talib's 2011 album, and Talib sounds thoroughly amped to be on it. You've all seen a gutter rainbow in the literal sense - the colours formed when oil spills onto the street, and while Kweli does point to that in the lyrics he also gives a more poetic alternative definition.

Pete Rock ft. Little Brother and Joe Scudda : Bring Y'all Back

"...catch a fist and a elbow"...Richard Spencer, come on down! Three very dope verses from LB and Joe Scudda over a Pete Rock beat; I think Phonte's is my favourite, but you can't go wrong with any of the three. Check this one on Pete Rock's third producer-driven compilation, "NY's Finest".

[Context] Maylay Sparks : Legacy (Inst)

One of those random independent 12"s that makes a DJs vinyl collection individual, rather than just an "essential hits" compilation! Context of the Danish crew "Nobody Beats The Beats" provides a quintessentially early-2000s instrumental.

WC & The MAAD Circle : Ghetto Serenade

RIP DJ Crazy Toones. This is a beat I've always loved since I heard it on MTV back in the day, and as Toones had his hands in the production (alongside Sir Jinx and Chilly Chill), I thought this was a good time to play the track. This is played from the 12" single which is itself taken from the 1991 "Ain't A Damn Thang Changed" album. You may not find the story as told by WC to your taste, but you can't deny that funk!

Taking it back to '89, we have one of the first recordings from the Main Source crew. This is the B-side of the "Think" single and for me, a perfect case of "B Side Wins Again"! The mixing and engineering was done by the legendary Paul C, who sadly would be killed before Main Source released their debut "Breaking Atoms" album; his influence lived on, and not just in the name of Large Professor's publishing company. 

Mega Ran & Storyville ft. Wise Intelligent : I Know Who I Am

It's been great over the last couple of years to see Mega Ran's profile climbing. He's an extremely talented artist and on the "Soul Veggies" album he reunited with long-time friend Storyville, who both took the mic and produced on the project. For this knowledge-packed track, it was only right that both of them connected with Wise Intelligent of the Poor Righteous Teachers; in fact, it was actually him who got on the DJ Seedless track first and then brought them in! The production is funky, jazzy, African...the whole pot, a perfect home for some excellent rhymes.

DJ Quik ft. Mausberg and James DeBarge : Change Da Game

The "Balance & Options" album from the legendary Compton DJ/MC is a must-own for me, with some absolute killers on it - this one being the opening, a statement of intent from Quik and the late Mausberg. The timing and dynamics on the rhythm part of the track gives it a certain bounce that is harder to duplicate than your average beatmaker might think, and as always with Quik, the musicianship is right there for you to appreciate.

[DJ Premier] Gang Starr : Skills (Instrumental)

You could do a mix of just DJ Premier instrumentals and it'd be a satisfying hour! This is from the 12", one of the four singles from "The Ownerz", the final Gang Starr album. Check the full version if you don't already know it - personally, I'm really missing that trademark Guru monotone style.

Heltah Skeltah ft. Starang Wondah & Doc Holiday : I Ain't Havin' That

I decided to finish the episode on a seriously energetic note, with this banging track getting a well-deserved outing. The Boot Camp crew rip the beat from A Tribe Called Quest's "Hot Sex" and you can almost hear them falling all over each other to get their rhymes in - the session in D&D Studios must have been insane! Topping it off with the Redman sample from "Pick It Up" just seals the deal. This is a 12" well worth having but you can also find the track on the "Magnum Force" album.

The purpose of putting the podcast out and providing the full tracklist is to try and give some light, so do use the songs on each episode as a starting point to search out more material. If you have Spotify in your country it's a great way to explore, but otherwise there's always Youtube and the like. hey thanks for sending something in anon! this is great because I’ve been meaning to make an entire post about this verse for a long time but never got around to it, and it’s nice to know someone is interested! i’m putting it under a read more because it’s rather long. 

so today’s canon with Remy focused a lot on his overall guilt and despair after learning he gathered the marauders only to usher a massacre of the Morlock society at the hands of Mr. Sinister. in canon, Remy feels disgusted and distraught over these events, thus leaving Sinister and the Marauders to go back to solo work and wandering until he encounters Storm. 

in my marauders verse, Remy does not leave the marauders after the events of the Morlock massacre. he is still shocked at the massacre, but instead of fleeing Sinister at the outset, still returns to Sinister’s side at the end of it all. He is not initially comfortable or approving of Sinister’s methods, but he continues to work for him because Sinister offers a variety of rewards and reasons to stay with him. the most immediate trade I can see happening is Sinister modifying Remy’s powers as he wants and needs to make them more powerful in manageable increments, but Sinister is a well connected guy, so he could also have multiple jobs, contractors, and contacts that Remy can get in touch with to have a steady string of thievery jobs and such. 

over time, Remy’s sense of guilt and regret fades with every morally dubious job or action he does (a slippery slope, if you will). his father, Jean-Luc, always did say to him that chivalry and sympathy have little relevance in a thief’s conscience, and this seems as good a time as any to take that to heart. and, indeed, burying his guilt and regret seems as good a way as any to cope with his contributions to the Morlock Massacre. with every disturbing undertaking, every unsavory task, Remy seems to grow more and more comfortable with the idea of murder, crime, and that of the truly heinous that Sinister often works in. 

fast forward to the current timeline for this AU, and Remy is known as one of the most merciless and dogged thieves out there. to date, there have been no hits or marks or jobs he has taken that have failed, and he is known to kill, maim, and destroy what he needs in order to get what he needs or wants. in some cases (I’m still debating on whether or not I want this), Sinister has restored some of Remy’s powers and helped him control charging and exploding organic matter as well as inorganic matter (as is his current canon). he is a known and dangerous member of Sinister’s Marauders, and has regularly run alongside other criminals such as Sabretooth, Mystique, Arclight, Vertigo, Riptide, and The Vanisher–to name a few. 

while he’s done a few independent gigs by himself, he’s always retained some connection to Sinister, even during times where Sinister did not immediately need him. Remy costs a high price on the market because of both his skill and how he is willing to do some of the most dangerous and dubious jobs available. 

he is without a doubt, however, a cocky, flirtatious, conceited motherfucker, and regularly goes out of his way to put on a show, be over dramatic, and make a statement. you might even argue that it's worse in this canon, because he also has no qualms about being blatantly insensitive, problematic, or offensive. whether or not he still has a conscience is hard to say–maybe he does, deep down, but effectively, he’s stamped it out from his day to day life, and currently speaking, he’s more or less comfortable with who he’s chosen to get into bed with, so to speak.
