The Enigmatic Grimalkin: Unveiling the Esoteric Significance of a Feline Figurine
Have you ever heard of the word "grimalkin"? This word, which is not commonly used today, has a long and fascinating history in the English language. In this blog post, we will explore the origins of grimalkin, its usage in literature, its etymology, and its figurative and literal definitions.
History and Usage:
Grimalkin is an old-fashioned term for a female cat, especially an old or ill-tempered one. The word is not often used in modern English, but it has a long history of use in literature, particularly in poetry and folklore.
For example, in Shakespeare's "Macbeth," one of the witches refers to her familiar, a cat named Graymalkin. Similarly, in the English nursery rhyme "Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat," the titular feline is sometimes called a "grimalkin." Other notable uses of the term include Edgar Allan Poe's "The Black Cat" and Beatrix Potter's "The Tale of Ginger and Pickles."
Etymology:
The etymology of grimalkin is somewhat unclear, but it is believed to come from two words in Middle English: "grim," meaning fierce or cruel, and "malkin," a diminutive form of the name "Mary." The latter is thought to have been a common name for female cats in the Middle Ages, possibly due to the association of cats with the Virgin Mary.
Figurative and Literal Definitions:
In addition to its literal definition as an old or ill-tempered female cat, grimalkin has taken on several figurative meanings over the years. It can be used to describe a woman who is old, ugly, or unpleasant, particularly in appearance or demeanor. For example, "Mrs. Norris was a grimalkin of a woman, with a sour expression and a sharp tongue."
Grimalkin can also be used to describe a person who is cunning, sly, or sneaky, particularly in a negative sense. This usage is often associated with the idea of a witch's familiar, a supernatural being in the form of a cat that helps a witch carry out her magic.
In conclusion, the word grimalkin is a fascinating example of how language can evolve over time. While it is not commonly used today, it has a rich history in literature and folklore, and its figurative meanings continue to resonate with modern audiences. Whether referring to a cantankerous old cat or a shrewd and crafty person, grimalkin remains a powerful and evocative term in the English language.

In it I offer a concise checklist of gothic elements to look for in literature; a gothic bingo, if you will. I did post about it on Wednesday, along with an old photo of the ever glorious Tintern Abbey. Today I'm offering another flashback - a close up of an unexpected cathedral discovered* in Bourges, France, and a reminder to those of you who missed it that you can find The Seven Gothic Signs on the blog; 🔗: link in bio. I would love to know if you find it useful, and if it has led to the reclassification of any recent or favourite reads. 🕷 *Okay, fine, I did not actually discover this cathedral... I'm pretty sure everyone else knew it was there. . #gothicnovel #gothicfiction #gothicdefinition #literaryterms #englishliterature #bookish #bookstagram #books #cathedral #church #gothiccathedral #bookworm #classicliterature #literarycriticism #generallygothic #literarytheory #readalong #gothic #spookynerd #gothicnovel #darkacademia #studygram #academic #bookblogger #tinternabbey #gothicarchitecture #clivebloom #bourges #france #bourgescathedral https://www.instagram.com/p/CDmQ9o2g11j/?igshid=emqoefdk5d2h

Follow me if you think #witches who like writing and literature and make cool photo edits with literary terms on them are neat. 🧙🏾♀️📖✒️🖤 . . . I’m looking for my #literature nerds. Those of you who like to find cool literature techniques, old and new, that our ancestors coined to make writing into an art. April - Fantasy
Does anyone else feel as if we’re living in an alternate universe/dream right now?
Well, we are well into the month of March and it is past time to take suggestions for our April book of the month! We will be reading Fantasy - my favorite!
According to LiteraryTerms, fantasy is:
Fantasy, from the Greek ϕαντασία meaning ‘making visible,’ is a genre of fiction that concentrates on imaginary elements (the fantastic). This can mean magic, the supernatural, alternate worlds, superheroes, monsters, fairies, magical creatures, mythological heroes—essentially, anything that an author can imagine outside of reality. With fantasy, the magical or supernatural elements serve as the foundation of the plot, setting, characterization, or storyline in general.
As usual, please send in any and all suggestions for the month, starting with mine - The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. We will be accepting suggestions through Wednesday, 18th March, 11:59pm PST. Stay safe, stay healthy, and happy reading!

"[𝕬𝖓] 𝖎𝖉𝖊𝖓𝖙𝖎𝖋𝖎𝖆𝖇𝖑𝖊 𝖐𝖎𝖓𝖉 𝖔𝖋 𝖑𝖎𝖙𝖊𝖗𝖆𝖗𝖞 𝖒𝖊𝖙𝖍𝖔𝖉, 𝖒𝖔𝖔𝖉, 𝖔𝖗 𝖒𝖆𝖓𝖓𝖊𝖗." - Chris Baldick 🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷 For those of you joining in with either of this month's readalongs, for those of you abstaining in unfamiliarity with the gothic, for those of you curious but not quite sure... It has been high time I took a direct stab at answering the most commonly asked generally gothic question for longer than I care to admit. Today, I've done it last; I have attempted to concisely explain what the gothic is. Whilst in essence the Generally Gothic project is an on-going attempt at defining the gothic, you may be pleased to know that there are some reoccurring elements present in many (particularly the early classic) gothic novels. There are 7 to be precise, and they should help you in identifying and better understanding the gothic. So take a look at The Seven Gothic Signs and, with your new found expertise, share your favourite gothic read, an unexpected place you found the gothic, or a text you're still sure is gothic even though it doesn't 'fit'. 🔗: Link in bio. . #gothicnovel #gothicfiction #gothicdefinition #literaryterms #englishliterature #horror #classichorror #bookish #bookstagram #books #jekyllandhyde #frankenstein #maryshelley #stevenson #bookworm #classicliterature #generallygothicbookclub #generallygothic #bookclub #readalong #gothic #spookynerd #gothicnovel #darkacademia #studygram #academic #bookblogger #tinternabbey #gothicarchitecture https://www.instagram.com/p/CDg5hOOAo31/?igshid=1knd2gnxolhvz
