First thing I thought of

Although we do have a few opportunities to hear and see manifestations of Rimmer's thoughts later on in the series, it's just occurred to me that he's probably never had to face them so head on until Me². His arguments with the other version of himself is basically just his internal monologue on loud speaker; the fact that his mother and father hated him directly on display to Lister for the first time. He can't push them down or hide these fears under his dogged pride. He's embarrassed. It's no wonder he's basically in tears

He does dream of kissing his roommate of several years who he has a long-standing love-hate relationship with, though it's played as a joke and he's all shocked about it (methinks you've got some internalized homo-/biphobia to work through, buddy!) Even without that, he just gives off such strong bi vibes.

Captain Hollister quite literally said if it's (a job) not worth doing, give it to Rimmer. Yet still gave him the responsibility of repairing the drive plate even though it's a very important thing to have to do. The Captain's a smeghead if you ask me..
