As recently as a year ago, chronic offender Francis Joseph Boivin promised to try and straighten himself out and put his life of crime behind him.
A judge told him that although he was 50 years old and had a lengthy criminal record, there was still room for improvement and he could rehabilitate himself.
“I’ll do my duty, your honour,” Boivin said at the January 2022 sentencing hearing in a Vancouver courtroom. Since moving to B.C. from Quebec in 1998, Boivin has accumulated more than 115 criminal convictions, most of them property-related offences to support his drug addiction. Earlier this month, Vancouver police announced brand-new charges against Boivin, accusing him of stealing more than $40,000 in art from a Vancouver art gallery.
He is just one of many chronic offenders who cycle through the criminal justice system. The issue of chronic offenders has become the focus of lawmakers in recent months. Premier David Eby announced changes that he said would make B.C. communities safer, including a change in policy on bail that is intended to keep repeat offenders behind bars.
Longtime criminal defence lawyer Mark Gervin, who has numerous clients who are chronic offenders, said that while Eby might be the right person to solve the issue, it’s not going to be fixed any time soon. “If there was an easy solution, we would have done it. There is no easy solution, and it will likely involve more money.”
Gervin believes there needs to be more funding put into better housing, drug treatment and mental health support if any progress is to be made with chronic offenders. Boivin had stable parents growing up in Quebec — his father was a police chief and his mother a drug counsellor.
He was the youngest of two children, and in his early days in Montreal started using drugs at the age of 13, according to submissions made at the sentencing hearing last year.
Boivin had difficulty living under the rules of his father and mother. They tried to assist him with his drug addiction but eventually had him leave the family home. His past employment included positions as a carpenter working for a flooring company in Montreal before he moved to B.C. in 1998.
One of his first criminal offences in B.C. came that year as he was convicted of trafficking in a controlled substance in Vancouver and received a 60-day conditional sentence to be served in the community. From 2012 to 2020 he was living homeless on the streets of Vancouver, but in 2020, with assistance, he managed to find housing in a single-room occupancy hotel in the city’s Downtown Eastside.
At the January 2022 sentencing hearing, he pleaded guilty to two counts of theft and two counts of breach of a conditional sentence order.
Earlier that month, he had stolen $250 worth of vodka from a B.C. government liquor store on East Broadway. In December 2021, an unknown person smashed the glass front door of a store on Granville Street, stole money from the cash till and fled. Boivin pleaded guilty to entering the store about an hour after the initial break-in, looting some electronics and towels, and leaving the premises before being arrested.
At the time of the offences, he was serving a six-month conditional sentence order after pleading guilty in August 2021 to two counts of breaking. His lawyer told the judge that Boivin was under the care of a physician and had been prescribed medication.
While he was living at the Flint Hotel on Powell Street, there had been a decrease in Boivin’s use of illicit substances and less involvement with the police. He had had time to think about the future, said the lawyer.
Boivin applied for admission to the Visual College of Art and Design on West Pender Street. He was hoping to be accepted into a program that might lead to employment in that field. He told the judge that he thought his life was coming together.
“It’s time for me to have something different in my life. … I’m willing to put in the necessary work.” The judge said the fact that he had found housing after being homeless for eight years was a “huge turnaround” for him.
She ordered that Boivin serve the remaining 27 days of his conditional sentence order in jail. But despite signs his future was looking up, Boivin relapsed and was arrested on March 6, 2022. He was charged with possession of stolen property at the Source Enterprise antique store on Main Street.
After an unknown male smashed a front window, police arrested Boivin a short while later in possession of several items from the store. At the May 5, 2022, sentencing hearing, Boivin apologized for his actions. He told the lawyers and the judge that he knew they were trying to help him, and he wanted to take advantage of that help.
The judge sentenced him to a day in jail after giving him enhanced credit for being in pre-sentence custody for 40 days. Boivin was also given 12 months probation and ordered to report to Forensic Psychiatric Services. Asked if he understood the conditions, Boivin said: “Yes, your honour. I’ll be on my finest behaviour.”
Lorraine Shorrock, a director and manager of the Source Enterprise antique store, said crime has gotten steadily more severe in the neighbourhood.
“We experience nothing but crime now and it was not like that (before). We used to have a few drunks, yes, we’ve always had them, a few fights where they break a window. But I’ve never had six broken windows in a year.” In a statement, the Vancouver police, which put out a news release about Boivin after the art gallery theft, noted there was a national conversation occurring about violent crime, chronic offenders, and the justice system’s role in holding criminals accountable.
“We hear every day from the citizens we serve, and many tell us they’re frustrated. Small business owners see the same shoplifters day after day and week after week. Their staff are increasingly facing violence and being assaulted when they try to stop thieves.”

My 2020 thus far..... in terms of girls.
November 15th, 2020
I’d like to start of by summarizing the amount of girls that have been a part of my life this year and have decided to up and leave for one reason or another.
Robyn C - I was casually seeing her from work. It wasn’t anything serious, but it was fun for the time being. I assumed we were going to continue seeing each other until she had to move to Vancouver for school; that was one of the appealing parts of the “relationship” because it would have an inevitable end not because of either of us but because of physical distance being placed....that ended early because she slowly stopped talking to me and started seeing someone else without letting me know. Dope. Found that one out through my roommate who knew for weeks. Stung a bit.
Sydney P - Aaaah yes this one. I simped for this girl really hard. Definitely not worth it though. This is the girlfriend that cheated on me the previous year. We didn’t talk for 6 months after that happened. Until I was an idiot and wanted to catch up and see how she was doing . Gave her a call and chatted for a while. We started texting again. I made it clear though that I didn’t want to hangout, because when we broke up I made it public that I caught her cheating, so it would also look bad on me if we were seen together again...because it was. Eventually I caved and we hungout in person...also one unfortunate night downtown at the clubs before lockdown, a very drunk me, her, and her friend ended up at her place and did some regrettable (But mostly awesome) things. Definitely shouldn’t have, but that night is burned into my memory now. Anyways, we were friendly for some time after that, even open about other people that we potentially wanted to start seeing or dating, and it was fine temporarily. Until she started seeing this guy that sounded awful, from her perspective not just mine. I sucked it up until she was drinking with him one night near my house and sent me DIRECTLY multiple snaps of them together kissing and what not, the day after I told her that I needed to take a step back from our friendship because I still had feelings for her. Huuuuuge mistake on my part for trying to keep her around and give her another chance. I clearly thought I saw something in her that wasn’t there, and she wanted me around as a friend. Which honestly I understand, I am a GREAT friend. Most of my good friends are female because of how open I am with them and how comfortable I am talking about my feelings. She felt that too, and wanted me to stay that way. But It would have been disingenuous to myself to ignore the feelings that I still had that she clearly didn’t. And after telling her that we CAN’T be friends anymore for those reasons, she disagreed and said I was “running away from the issue”. Which I’m going to chalk up to her wishful thinking, as she would assume me swallowing those feelings would have been better? I don’t know. All I know is that she is still with this dude and I shouldn’t have anything to do with her anymore. She wasn’t THE reason, but she was definitely a solid variable for me to leave Kelowna as I felt the need to physically distance myself from that kind of one sided toxic friendship.
Katie B - Didn’t actually date her or anything this year, but she was my friend. And in my world where I was miserable and felt the need to move back home to save money during my last year of school because of the Corona Virus Pandemic, I thought it would be comforting to have a friend that I still messaged regularly to be waiting for me when I got home. But surprise surprise, we hangout one time and it felt...off. She was seeing some guy that hit one her when we were seeing each other, but to my knowledge it still wasn’t anything serious. BUT, she eventually told me that she was intentionally distancing herself from me to respect her now BOYFRIEND...when wee months before she was still sending me pictures of her ass while they were “dating”. To some point I can respect her decision but holy fuck does that timing suck for me. Thinking that I will have a friend in this tough time of isolation where there are few people I actually want to see in my home town. Jokes on me though, #BadLuckBrian
Abby M - for clarification, I never dated this girl. Not one time. Thank God for that though. We simply just messaged each other for years, talking fairly regularly. Because we never lived in the same city for the majority of our friendship we seemed to overshare a lot and be a lot more open with each other, since it was seemingly risk free. So EVENTUALLY, since I had to move back home we got to hangout...like one time. And previously we both said we had a bit of a crush on the other. We would not hangout again for weeks, maybe months, though I have had a lot of free time, same as her seeing as she lost her job and was making mediocre money from her mediocre only fans...Not the best romantic candidate haha, whoops. Anyways, I kept asking to hangout and eventually she said “no can do, I have a boyfriend”, which would be fine...if she didn’t lead me on for months. She said things like “Well I kept calling you my best friend, I put you in the friend zone”, buuuut simultaneously would send me nudes on the regular. Strange girl, strange thing. I called her out for leading me on and how that’s not okay and she simply just said I was simping for her haha. Sorry girl, I would NOT pay for your OF. Strange “Friendship” indeed. Truthfully I do miss some of the talks that we had when I wasn’t in the same city as her. When there was no real reason for us to be anything more than pen pals to each other. I think I learned something from this one.
Makayla M - This one is the freshest. Scene, I’m still living in Kelowna. I match with her on Tinder, she seems like a cool girl. She wants to meet up for a drink. I tell her yes but I don’t want to waste her time and that I’m moving back home for approximately 5 months. She says that is unfortunate but still wants to meet because she thinks I'm a cool guy as well, at least over text/snap. We have a drink and hangout, its great, she’s great, we really get along. Nothing happens though, no kisses or anything, we both just go home. A few days later we hangout again, this time doing the “Netflix and Chill” thing. We have sex, its great, its fun, I don’t regret it. I leave in a couple days, on the night before I leave I’m having drinks with my roommates, end up going to her house instead of finding my way home, we have sex again. Still great. She's great. I leave the next morning. We ended up talking everyday for the next 4 months. I thought to myself “damn, she might actually still be into me by the time I get back!”. Which maybe was naïve of me. A few days after I told her that I found a new place and roommate in Kelowna and can actually come back she goes...quiet...We were talking pretty much everyday before this, so it was weird that she was being a lot more quiet than usual. It was like that for about a week. I was worried, maybe something had actually happened to her? I was about to straight up ask her roommate if something had happened to her of if I was just being ghosted. After about a week of that I messaged her asking if she was okay, suggesting maybe that she started seeing someone? She didn’t respond for another 2 days, but when she did she said “Hi! Sorry, I’ve been super busy with work. And yeah I’ve kind of started seeing someone”. Which for one, she works at a liquor store, not sure how busy she could be but oh well, and second ouch my heart. She definitely didn’t owe me anything, since we only really hungout 3 times, but I absolutely developed feelings for this girl over the 4 months of us talking everyday. We would send each other lude snaps, and cute messages about how we wish the other person was within reach so we could cuddle and give each other smooches & do cute things for the other. I was in it man, I really wanted this to be a possibility when I inevitably moved back. And then, once I am only 1 month from moving back she starts seeing someone else. I am immensely disappointed. Again, we didn’t owe anything to each other, but God I was into giving her more than she deserved. All I said to her when she sent that was “oh yeah I kind of figured, well good luck with that”. That was the last thing I said to her after months of sending cute nothings to one another. Disappointing is how I would describe that potential relationship. Right now I really want to message her, and let her know how much this upsets me that I can’t message her everyday like before anymore, and I know she will say “we can still talk and be friends!” but dammit I don’t want to be her friend. I want more than that. And I will not do what a younger version of me would do; say “Yeah I’d like that” and suffer silently when said person would get the benefit of having me as a great friend while I would be struggling to keep my composure around them. I’m still not sure if I should keep her on socials. I think it is still too fresh to think clearly about it.

The first in the 21st century, the coronavirus (cause of COVID-19) represents the first pandemic in multiple generations. In its wake, generations of families have been separated, friends asked to keep their distance, and a collective philosophy of staying at home has replaced the traditional night out.  But under the supervision of Federal and Provincial Governments, businesses such as those who provide food and drink may continue working. One of those businesses, in Vancouver, is Strange Fellows and they’re ready to deliver your favorite SF beers.

Socializing in the age of social distancing
On the first Friday night of spring, downtown Vancouver patios, streets and bars are usually teeming with people.
This year, the city is nearly locked down as residents are asked to practice social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Still, they’re finding new ways to connect.

VanCity
Travelling is definitely one of my passions and I have thoroughly enjoyed my experiences thus far. Unfortunately, I haven’t explored as much of our beautiful country as I would have liked. One of my goals is to do a small, more local trip each year. I decided to head to the West Coast (aka best coast if you ask anyone who’s been there) to visit my good friend Shera. Shera and I met while we both lived and worked in Toronto several years ago. While we don’t get to see each other that often, she is such a strong, positive and inspiring person that I am so lucky to have in my life. I was really excited that she had some time in May for me to come visit. Many of my friends and family have been to and loved BC, so I was super excited about this trip. I decided to use some of my hard earned Aeroplan points to book my flights and was heading to BC for an extra long weekend.
Thursday, May 9th, 2019          I decided to take the bus from the Hamilton GO station to the airport. It takes just over an hour and drops you off at Terminal 1 (perfect for my AC flight). It is also super cost effective at about $12 each way and really easy if you packed light (which shockingly, I did). My flight was easy and I landed mid morning in Vancouver. Shera is currently teaching at BCIT, which has several campuses in the city. She works out of the Burnaby Campus, in the east part of the city. She picked me up and brought me towards here work where I could catch the Expo line into the city. Since I had so much that I wanted to do, I mapped out a bit of downtown to check out, starting with Downtown and Gastown. I wandered around downtown and hit up the Gas Town Steam Clock and a few things around that area. I love libraries, so I made sure to visit the Central Library, which had great views and a cool promenade at its base. I meandered along the majority of “downtown Vancouver” and the business district.                                                                                                                             I made my way down towards Stanley Park and rented a bike for about $30. I biked all the way around Stanley Park, which was way better than I had anticipated. Stanley Park borders Burrard Inlet and English Bay and is over 1000 acres in size. It was one of the first places to be discovered in the city and offers so much!  The park was amazing! I did enjoy many of its beautiful sights while biking along the 1000-year-old seawall.  I managed to get myself a bit lost while trying to find the famous “hollow tree. Let me tell you, the 27 km of hiking paths in Stanley Park are no fun with a bike (not that I explored even ¼ of that). After getting sufficiently lost and seeing the majority of the park including the Lions Gate bridge, Iron Workers Memorial Bridge and totem poles, I wandered around English bay for a bit. Seeing as it was getting quite late and Shera was expecting me at the ferry, I grabbed a snack (ice cream of course), dropped my bike off and hopped on the bus to the Horseshoebay Ferry terminal which took about 30 mins on the bus.                                                                                              Once I arrived at the ferry terminal, I met back up with Shera and grabbed my stuff out of the car so we could take the ferry home. We had some time to kill before the ferry arrived so we grabbed dinner and drinks at Trolls (I think) and caught up a bit. It had been 5 months since we had last seen each other and had a lot to catch up on!                                                                                          The ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Gibsons leaves at random intervals thorough the day (the schedule is confusing and doesn’t seem to be super consistent) and takes about 40 minutes to get to Gibsons (Langdale Ferry Terminal). Gibsons is technically part of the mainland but is really only accessible via ferry. Tons of people commute into the city each day from Gibsons and beyond- and here I complain sometimes about my 20 min commute.                                                                                                                       Once arriving at the terminal, we hopped into Shera’s baby (her new but older Ford Escape} and made the 10 or so minute drive over to her place. She has a lovely place in “Lower Gibsons” with beautiful views of the town and water. I was exhausted so went straight to bed after a long and enjoyable day.
Friday May 10th, 2019         Shera had to work quite early in the am so we took the first ferry over (about 5/6 am). The ferry is actually a lot more fun than I had expected. We met up with one of her friends on the ferry and enjoyed coffee and toast. The ferry is such a great place to get work done and hang out. If I had to commute, I would much prefer to do it on a boat where I could work, eat or sleep. Once we got off the ferry, I hopped in Kate’s car as she worked closer to the main part of the city than Shera. Kate dropped me off near the Vancouver General and I moseyed around for an hour or so before things opened. I grabbed a coffee and enjoyed the sights and sounds of the South Granville/East? part of the city. I walked down towards Granville Island and enjoyed the shops and the market. I had a second breakfast there and enjoyed some quiet time people watching. Granville market had some super cute spots but the entrance and Kids Market looked like the most fun part. Sadly, it wasn’t open, or I would have totally gone in.         After Granville Island, I hopped on the bus and headed out to the UBC campus where my partner Mike went to school and suggested. After a few glitches (aka my getting lost MULTIPLE times in the huge campus) I managed to find the treetop walk and the botanical gardens I had been looking for. The treetop walk was pretty neat although definitely not as exciting as I had thought. I was there with a big school group and managed to avoid them at all costs. I headed over to Nitobe gardens, which is considered to be on the most authentic Japanese gardens in the world with its cherry blossoms, irises, Japanese pruned trees and a koi pond. I think I hit 20,000 steps before 2 pm, which might be a record for me! I hopped back on the bus and got off just before Kitsilano. I was a bit hungry so grabbed some snacks at Whole Foods before enjoying some R&R on the beach. Shera came down from work and met me at Local Kitsilano, where we grabbed beers before heading to the ferry back home.         Shera was having some girls over the next day as a belated birthday celebration so we scooted over to the grocery and liquor stores before going home to get ready for dinner. Sadly, the oyster restaurant was still closed for the season so we settled for the delicious Mexican fare at Lonitas. We enjoyed some chips and guac along with delicious tacos. Shera took me on a little walking tour of Gibsons, despite being super full and tired. The town is so cute and quaint! Being so close to Van but with the perks of a small town are so amazing- I get why she loves it there so much. After our stroll and tour, we headed home for a good nights sleep before another jam-packed day.
Saturday May 11th, 2019        While I may be a Crossfit enthusiast, I am all for any and all forms of exercise and will try anything at least once! Shera has recently become involved in kickboxing and was excited to take me with her. While my spatial sense and hand eye coordination could use some work, I really enjoyed the class. My favourite part was the “elevator” at the end that included jabs and burpees. After a great sweat sesh, we grabbed some much needed coffees and showers in preparation for our afternoon.       Shera was having an intuitive come to the house to “read” us if you will. Now, I wouldn’t call myself a full on skeptic but I did have my reservations. I am happy to say, Joanne the intuitive was amazing. She was very personable, relatable and kind. We each had about 30 minutes with her, in which she took time reading our energies, answering questions and guiding us through what she was feeling. I really enjoyed my time with her and took a number of things away from the experience. She was pretty spot on with many of her thoughts and readings, despite my “skepticism”. I would definitely see someone like her again and highly recommend it for anyone who is interested.        After Joanne left, we continued to enjoy our snacks and sangria before making our way to down to the dock to meet Scotty. Scotty owns “Scotty’s scooters” and is a friend of Sheras. He kindly brought us on his boat to a spot near them off of Keats Island. This is where locals dock their boats, cook, drink and enjoy the outdoors. The weather was just perfect and I love a good boat ride! We met a few other people and enjoyed drinks, homemade sausages and freshly caught prawns. The prawns were the best I had ever tasted- they were so fresh and didn’t even need the melted butter that accompanied them. After enjoying our drinks and dinner, we hopped back on the boat home. The night was still young so we headed over to Kate’s house to hang out for a bit. They have one of the most beautiful designed homes I have ever seen. It was farmhouse meets industrial chic, all wrapped into one! I hung out with their adorable and precocious munchkins for a bit before we all enjoyed some more bevvys by the fire.
Sunday May 12, 2019         Yay for a bit of a sleep in! We didn’t have a strict itinerary today so we enjoyed a bit of a sleep in before brunch at the Gum boot. The Gum boot is a delicious and popular restaurant in Roberts Creek. Shera and I waited a bit to get seated but my meal did not disappoint. Since it was mother’s day, we enjoyed MUMosas overlooking the nice grass area. Shera had a game of baseball to get to so I hung out and enjoyed that. Her teammates were all super friendly and were pretty decent players. After the game, we hiked around Smugglers Cove and enjoyed the lush greenery, arbutus trees and the views of the Georgia Strait. Since the Raptors were playing (this was the infamous Kawai shot night), we headed over to the lighthouse in Sechelt for dinner and beers to enjoy during the game. Shera’s baseball team had another game so we went and cheered them on for that before heading home to watch an amazing sunset on the beach amongst the driftwood. Sunset is my favourite time of the day and the BC sunset did not disappoint!
Monday May 13th, 2019         Since I love my sleep, Shera went into the city before I did on my second last morning in BC. I lounged around Gibsons and enjoyed coffee at the Beachcomber. I took the bus over to the ferry and met Shera at the ferry Terminal. Today we were going to be proper tourists and check out the Capilano Suspension Bridge and Grouse Mountain (which we were supposed to do on Friday but thank goodness we didn’t as my legs wouldn’t have made it). The Capilano Suspension bridge is one of Vancouver’s most popular tourist attractions. At over 130 years old from its inception the “Kia’palano” (meaning beautiful river) bridge was named after a great Squamish Chief who lived in the area in the early 1800s. While the bridge has had many improvements and enlargements over the years, the 70 meter high and 140 meter long suspension bridge has magical views over the Capilano River. The park also has a learning centre, treetop walk and a cliffwalk, all surrounded by lush, beautiful forest. While it was very cool and beautiful, it was super touristy and a bit pricey ($54 a person) for what it all is. I would still highly recommend it (or the cheaper/free suspension bridge called Lynn Canyon.          Next stop- Grouse Mountain! Grouse Mountain is just a short drive from the Bridge. We made sure to check our bags and waterbottles before our hike so we would be prepared. Grouse Mountain is considered the Peak of Vancouver at 1200 meters high.  It is a popular ski destination for those in the area during the winter but is probably even more popular in the summer. Nicknamed “Mother Nature’s Stairmaster” the over 2800 steps leading the way up over 800 meters  (about 2.9 km) to the top are no easy feat. Every year, there are thousands who come do the “Grouse Grind”. There is even a contest to see who can climb it the most in 24 hours. I am not the most avid hiker (fake it till you make it) but am probably more experienced than the average person (cough Kilimanjaro, cough). Despite my previous experience, I suffered supremely on this “hike”. I would call this more of steep steps. Being 5”2, I am very disadvantaged when it comes to high steps and had a hard time keeping up with Sheras long, gazelle-like legs. I think it ended up taking us almost an hour and a half to do the whole thing, which was longer than I had anticipated. I mean, I wasn’t in the best shape of my life but didn’t think it would be so hard! For reference, the top time of the day was around 25 minutes… I definitely suggest doing the Grouse Grind but make sure you are prepared both physically and mentally- and have lots of water and snacks!          Once atop the 2830, steps, we ate our snacks and grabbed a coffee before paying the $15 to take the gondola back down. You can’t actually climb back down-which is probably for the best. The gondola is beautiful and well worth the climb. The sights of the city and area are amazing. After our hike, we headed to the ferry Terminal and back to Gibsons. We were the only patrons at Drift Restaurant in town and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It’s too bad the weather wasn’t cooperating because their patio was awesome and had great views of the water. After full tummies, we headed home for a good nights sleep.
Tuesday May 14th 2019          Sadly, it was my last day in BC. Shera and I hopped on the 0830 ferry and picked up Shera’s car that was being looked at in North Van. She dropped me off in downtown after saying our sad but so happy and grateful goodbyes. She had a busy day at work as the new school semester had just started. Since I had my suitcase, I found a post office that stored bags for the day and paid to have my suitcase and large backpack stored. It is an ingenious idea and worth every penny, especially since it was raining and I did not want to be carting my stuff all around town.       After dropping my stuff off, I made my way back over towards Stanley Park and walked in a different way to the Aquarium. Since it was pouring rain, I figured the aquarium was a great place to visit. I was the only adult above the age of 21 there without a child but still had a great time. I learned a lot about sealions during their live show and checked out the many different eco systems they have set up at the Aquarium.        Once I had seen all of the sea creatures, it dawned on me that I hadn’t had much seafood yet this trip, which is sacrilegious when visiting any coastal city. I wandered around downtown and settled on Fanny’s Oysters, which ended up being a fabulous choice! I had several different types of oysters and some that was almost as good as the oysters. Anyone that knows me, knows I can eat my weight in Oysters but I limited myself to a dozen and kept on my downtown stroll. I stopped into Steamworks for a beer in Gastown before grabbing my stuff at the post office and jumping on the train to the airport. The train ride was about 30 mins and seamless. The airport seems so much smaller in comparison to Pearson so getting around it made more sense. I had a lounge pass and was super excited to use it! I enjoyed dinner, drinks and a nice hot shower before getting ready for my redeye back home. I managed to sleep well on my flight home and took a morning bus back into Hamilton.         While there are many places I would still like to see in BC, I really think I did a good job of hitting a bunch of important spots on the trip. Most importantly, I got to spend some quality time with my girl Shera and get a glimpse into the amazing life she has built for herself on the west coast. I see many more visits to come and cannot wait for them!

Prized Urban Neighbourhood - Coal Harbour Condos
Despite the fact that Coal Harbour is right downtown, it’s a surprisingly calm little neighbourhood, right on the water’s edge. It’s even more surprising given its industrial history as a former shipyard sitting right next to the railway terminus. The area starts at Canada Place and stretches west to Stanley Park, and is bordered by Burrard Inlet to the north, West Georgia Street to the south. Coal Harbour is a charming mix of business and residential, being home to both the Vancouver Convention Centre as well as condo towers. Around this area you’ll find locals and visitors mingling on the sea wall, neighbourhood cafes and restaurants, a popular marina, and the odd harbour seal bobbing around and greeting passersby.
BENCHMARK PRICE DROP
The MLS® Home Price Index composite benchmark price for all residential properties in Metro Vancouver is currently $1,042,100. This represents a 1.4 per cent decrease over November 2017 and a 1.9 per cent decrease compared to October 2018.
Tumblr media
Coal Harbour’s big attraction is the view and the laidback atmosphere. If you’re looking for something more than just a photo to take home, browse the small stores along the Seawall, most of which are locally-owned. Or after having a drink at a local waterfront pub, head to the liquor store to buy a bottle of your favourite B.C. tipple to enjoy from your back yard.

Daily life #276
So I applied for a job just now so day 1 of 8. Anyways I decided that I am going to do something productive with my time tomorrow. I am going to finally get my serving it right so I can either work at a liquor store or be a server. It only costs $35 so it wont hurt my wallet. That and I plan on going on a small walking tour where I will get to learn some exclusive history which will be exciting. I am going to learn so much tomorrow I am excited to be bettering myself and my situation. My situation isn't great but it isnt terrible either and knowing I can at least try to better it is empowering. I am in the beginning stages of a god knows when fund and it is going well. I just got a gift card to home sense so that is definitely going to help. It is really important that I use this time to better myself and learn. I am super excited for all the opportunities that I have to learn and better myself and my understanding of the world specifically my local area. Speaking of which I need to see what is open and when in terms of the museum of Vancouver and the museum of anthropology. I feel bad about taking my brother downtown to pender. What I should do is message him the website link and have him decide if he wants to do it. So yeah. Anyways I gotta go to bed so be back tomorrow hopefully. Day 11 of 20.

Stuck
Things have gone sideways a lot. Covid virus, not that I have it but it,s changed the social landscape to my disadvantage. After beautiful Bantayan island I ferried to the main island of Cebu, and was herded onto the wrong bus. It did have AC, but it was the local, picking up and dropping off along a different inland route. This meant I got
to see the another part of Cebu, and I still liked it.
Here’s another list of sights glimpsed as the bus rolled through grasslands, up into hills, down jungle choked valleys and after a dozen tiny  towns, back to the coast.   Yolanda construction (Yolanda was the super typhoon that decimated the Philippines in 2013, I was on Boracay island in 320 kph winds). Santas Sleighs with lights and reindeer. Pryce Gas.National Food  Authority(closed).Bogo Arts and Science Academy, Lady of Child Maternity center, trees with black green leaves shaped like arbutus, dense, long stemmed branches, the leaves had drip tips longer than the main leaf.”Alpine Subdivision”, (flat scrub).Welders making a steel framed roof on a sea can, steel stairs zigzagging up to a 50 foot statue of Mary standing on a  20 foot wide mooring ball.pleasant low rolling hills with crops of corn , cane , beans, bananas. tracked cranes loading burnt sugar cane into dumptrucks where blackened cane cutters chopped it into shorter lengths.fluffy graceful bamboo, bouganvillea, more cane, roadside gardens of greens and cucumbers. Fences made of 1 litre pop bottles stacked on poles. Everybody has a phone, even the loafers in the shade are screening their data.brilliant white fresh limestone in lift bags used to make a roadside barrier(limestone turns black). From razor wired palaces to shacks walled with feed sacks. Yellow wisteria on an arbour, rampant, beside fluffy white roses. pink chestnut like flowers on a multi trunked, wide crowned  tree. A few old wood walled houses with filagree walltop vents and louvered window shutters, all bleached white by the sun .Palms with tin guards against Rats or coconut squirrels. Seasonal streams with massive concrete walls to divert floods.2 decker trucks loaded with40 new motorcycles. One tree topped with solid pink frangipani. Concrete power poles with inset slots for climbing. Big steel power poles tapered to concertina for shipment and extend up 3 sections for installation.Lots of places selling landscaping plants. The ABC Animal Bite Control center.Stretches of mean shacks, rubble, discarded wood and trash. A 20 foot tree, flat limbed with each outthrust branch having just one fine white blossom. Huge piles of pineapples for sale.Rockers, chairs and benches made of a fine grained yellow wood with tan coloured sap wood.Stacks of 1 meter long bundles of firewood, split fine.A Pension house: 6 foot wide cells, no windows, painted a virulent Chinese green. Purple pink azeleas covered in blooms. The “Painless Funeral Home” An egg store with thousands of eggs graded and priced by size. A steel fence made of flattened oil barrels.Everywhere houses wrecked by the December typhoon, roofless, often with concrete walls snapped off. A brand of motorcycle called “Smash” And everywhere the whole jam packed gas powered mess.We made dozens of stops, including one where the bus driver hopped off, ran into a yard, gave his wife a package and a kiss, hugged his 3 year old daughter, petted the puppy, and jumped back on the idling bus. Nice.
Into Cebu city to  the North bus station and a taxi to my Hostel, which I had picked because it had a swimming pool. First thing i saw was a notice stating that Manila was in lockdown due to Covid. No entry by land  sea or air. So that blew my flight there to catch my flight out of the country. I checked Cebu Pacific and they had cancelled all flights. Emailed my travel agent for advice, cooled in the pool, and moved the next day to Bohol island where I planned to motorcycle through the chocolate hills. Next morning in my Hostel a Brit told me that Cebu was closing all ports that day, Yikes! I repacked and bolted  for the next ferry.I went straight to the airport, looking for some flight out of  the country. Both Cebu Pacific and Philippines Air had 3 hour waits to get into the offices, and then? I dumped my bags at a cheapo hostel and taxied to the PAL downtown office where I got  a 2 stop ticket to Taiwan in 4 days. Pricey but hey!  Next day the stopover island locked down, which chopped that flight. Back downtown to Pal, 4 hour wait, but when I wandered into a lunch hour closed travel agency, the manager popped out and explained the situation to me. She was very good, and got me an alternate flight with Air Asia in 2 weeks. The only option, I took it. Next day the local government closed the airport for a month. Another ticket zapped. All this time my excellent travel agent in Parksville had been rescheduling my Taiwan Vancouver return, changing it everytime flights failed. My internet skills went up, and my wallet down.  Finally Nina the very competent manager at First United Travel booked me a ticket on the first available flight..April 15!. Rearranged the  Taiwan Vancouver flight for a fourth time, with drama as credit card failed, and Sherry found a safe way to email my other card. Man I,ve been on the net at least 2 hours every day, trying to figure this out. So... if the locals open the airport April 15 I can go home, where I must self isolate for 2 weeks. Nothing I’d like better! However, the virus is just showing up here and if other countrys experience is an indicator, the odds are that this place will remain quarantined, and me stuck here. Best move I made was to bus across the island to Moalboal, a resort town where I lucked out getting a hostel with an AC dorm (just me), and a kitchen. Recent decrees have closed all restaurants, so I am home cooking with food I motorcycled from the supermarket in town. Now a new law requires all people under 18 and all seniors to stay at home indoors, Good thing I stocked up a weeks food, and better that the hostel owner closed his doors but let me stay on. These laws are being enforced by teams from the local councils, and federal cops on motorcycles. They even banned liquor sales, but relented to allowing 2 bottles per customer.  So, I have a good place to stay, food, and a nice room. I am taming the wildcats here(chicken scraps, friends for life) and laying low. I did sneak down a back road to the beach where the fisherman haul out their boats, and found a tree shaded spot behind a boat under construction where I can loaf, read, and get the sea breeze.  3 weeks to wait. and I check the Cebu city news twice daily to be sure they don’t lock down the city, keeping me from the airport. Will my flight happen? Will civil unrest break out despite distribution of free rice to the poor? Already half the population is unemployed due to closures, and these people have no margin. I may scout out a bolt hole!  Stressed? I was, but as I have no control over events, I am  now cool, just monitor the process, and hope for the best. Well that’s a lot for one blog. Stay tuned, where ever you are locked down!

One month after legalization, illicit cannabis shops doing brisk business
TORONTO — The three surveillance cameras and the steady flow of people in and out of the small, nondescript grey building are the only hint of the brisk business this downtown Toronto cannabis dispensary does behind closed doors.
Once inside, two men behind a white desk under a vintage chandelier ask patrons to provide government identification and fill out a membership form. Then, customers are allowed to enter another room through a steel door, where an array of pot products are on display in a glass case.
When asked what has changed since Canada legalized on Oct. 17, one staffer said: “We’re just busier.”
Among the many shoppers on Thursday, a fourth-year university student said he preferred to buy from this dispensary to avoid the delivery problems that bedevil the provincial cannabis store. Also, he didn’t want the transaction to appear in his banking records.
“It’s just too much of a hassle… it’s all about convenience for me,” he said.
It’s been nearly a month since recreational pot was legalized across Canada, and despite raids by local police departments and government warnings to illegal pot shop operators to shutter their doors or face consequences, the black market continues on.
Product shortages, delivery delays and other problems plaguing the roll-out have not helped, said Martin Landry, an analyst with GMP Securities.
“It hasn’t been perfect… And probably as a result the shift away from the black market has not happened as fast as most expected. But I think that’s short term.”
Canada legalized cannabis for recreational use on Oct. 17 with the elimination of the black market as one of the Liberal government’s main goals.
There was little expectation that it would disappear quickly, as the illicit market has survived in U.S. states like Colorado and Oregon years after legalizing recreational pot.
Statistics Canada estimates that during the fourth-quarter of this year there will be 5.4 million people wanting to purchase legal cannabis and 1.7 million continuing to buy illicit pot across Canada. Spending on pot during that period may range from $816 million to $1.1 billion while purchases of illegal cannabis may range from $254 million to $317 million, the agency estimates.
But getting users to switch from illegal sources hinges, in part, on whether the legal offering is a competitive one.
Meanwhile, in addition to limited amounts of legal pot products, cannabis-infused edibles are prohibited from sale until 2019.
In Ontario, where privately run brick-and-mortar cannabis stores won’t be ready until next April, and British Columbia, which has just one government-run pot store, illicit shops continue to draw in clientele.
The Weeds Glass and Gifts stores in Vancouver are “hyper busy right now,” said its owner Don Briere.
His chain of stores in Vancouver are benefiting from the closures of other illicit dispensaries but also because B.C.’s lone legal store is located more than 350 kilometres away in Kamloops, B.C.
“How are you going to service five million people in British Columbia with one store that is nowhere near the population centre?” Briere said in an interview.
Briere shut down nine of his shops across the country but is servicing clients online and keeping his four Vancouver shops open while awaiting the outcome of ongoing litigation Other dispensaries have also decided to keep their doors open while waiting for their license applications to be processed.
Still, the stiffer penalties under the Cannabis act As of Oct. 17, which include a first offence fine of up to $250,000 and imprisonment of as much as six months, coupled with the potential to be blacklisted from pursuing legal retail options have prompted several to shut down.
For example, the Green Room Society Dispensary on Spadina Avenue in Toronto has white paper covering up the glass windows and door. In the window, written on the paper in black marker it says: “Come say high on April 1st.”
The Ontario government warned in the days before legalization that black market operators must shut down or risk being barred from ever obtaining a legal retail license under the province’s private system.
Landlords in Ontario also face hefty fines for allowing illicit dispensaries to operate on their properties, putting further pressure on owners to close up shop, said Matt Maurer, a partner at Torkin Manes and vice-chair of the firm’s cannabis law group.
Others across the country have been forcibly compelled by law enforcement to shut their operations down.
In Port Alberni, B.C., the Royal Canadian Mounted Police raided two pot shops on legalization day for not having provincial licenses. A day later, police and inspectors from Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corp. raided a dispensary in St. John’s.
There were 92 illegal cannabis storefronts in Toronto on Oct. 16, prior to legalization, according to Bruce Hawkins, a spokesman for the city’s municipal licensing and standards department. That number has been whittled down to 21, as of Nov. 6, due to shutdowns of their own accord or by the city and police, he added.
Maurer has been approached in the year leading up to legalization and afterwards by dispensary owners seeking a license to operate a legitimate cannabis business, as the risk of being an illicit operator is heightened, he said.
Post-legalization, the provincial and territorial governments have a vested interest in shutting illegal pot shops down, he said.
“Every sale at an illegal dispensary is another dollar not going to the provincial government,” Maurer said. “So why would they tolerate that any further?”

30 days in Vancouver
Tumblr media
Crossing through the Rockies for the first time made it feel like I was passing into an entirely different English-speaking country. I still feel that way; the water tastes different (I haven’t seen a Britta filter since I left Ontario), climate, a widespread love for pitbulls, landscape, non-government liquor stores and marijuana industry is different, commercial retail saturation is different (London Drugs anyone?).....
I’ve visited a number of cities and have a streak of urban planning geekery, so holy shit THIS CITY!? The views all around are remarkable, whether walking around, on the skytrain, or moving across bridges or viaducts. There’s a light show all over downtown, perhaps a remedy to all the darkness and rain. At night, whether there’s fog of not, it feels like walking in Blade Runner; this feeling is augmented by the high population of people living on the street. Street life as ecosystem and economic force here is a feature of the urban phenomenon.
So much light lives alongside so much dark.
So much nature alongside urbanity.
So much individuality to assert alongside the province, and the federation. I’m lucky to have travelled east and west across Canada; in my life I want to be a proponent of regions and provinces obtaining more autonomy through increased negotiating authority. Or at least be an active part of the debate :)
I’m pretty much in awe over here. Duality is in my face, large, every day; the nature and the hyper-urban, materialist wealth and transcience, light and dark. Both at all times. I’m feeling THIS. Also feeling a first impression that Toronto has significantly more urban green space (tho fewer green roofs?...tba.....).
I connected with a long-time friend who had home space to share until I found a place....the house of 4 roommates on the edge of Chinatown (shades of Spadina xo) was a true blessing.I had a job interview a couple days after I landed, and the job offer landed in my email 2 days after that. That week I also met, through my house-host’s friend circle, my current housemate. I look forward to dressing my room’s bare beige walls, but in the meantime, 20 minutes of walking gets me to Commercial Drive (shades of College St. in T.O.) in one direction, and Main street in the other. Blessed.
So I have a full-time gig with a charity, communitybuilders.com. Social housing guys....7 years I’ve been wanting this! 550 tenants in 7 buildings in downtown Vancouver. I’ve been working along Granville St. primarily, where old hotels that were shiny mid-century gems have since been converted to rooming houses, or Single Resident Occupancy buildings. This type of dwelling houses marginalized addiction-mental health-disabiity populations (that today includes seniors). Coming from Kensington Market, this is bread and butter stuff. And it hasn’t been since then that I have had the opportunity to focus my energy in one direction for an undetermined amount of time. I’m in training phase right now, bouncing between 3 different SRO buildings (45-100 tenants in each), and a temporary shelter we opened not 3 weeks ago. So I am excited, and putting energy into tenants and shelter guests, staff and neigbourhood players ie. ACT teams that make up community on a strip of Granville.
My co-workers and managers are predominantly female; at least 75%....this includes staff that sits at the office desk of a high-needs SRO of 90 tenants with dealers and non-tenant users and who-knows-who-else coming in and out at 2am on-her-own type stuff. Seriously. Females with smaller body types, nurses and support workers. We’re on health watch (including CPR and narcan, which I haven’t had to make use of yet), maintain security, build relationships with tenants and work on property maintenance. My first days there were surreal;  I’m in a hoodie and flat-brim ball cap (generally), and I meet 2 other female staff wearing the same stuff. Visibly queer, however you interpret that combo of words.
Otherwise, the female staff are from other countries (3 so far I know of), and have significant accents. I think I’m stunned that I’ve landed in an agency that shares and executes principles that I share. The staff relations are the best of any organization or company I’ve worked for. I am so impressed by these humans, and I’m one of them.
Processing all this change is really taking some time. The disorientation is still present, which makes sense; I’m sure I have no idea how excited I really am. It’s like living in a dream these days. Though there is no question that I’ve been headed here for quite some time. And there is no doubt that I am exactly where I should be. xo
