Unusual Model Train Sets

A long time ago in 2020, I did a thread on Twitter of unusual model train sets. Mainly to showcase some that don't seem real, but are/were. Here's a selection of such trains.

I pity the fool who doesn't have this set.

It's more than meats the eye.

I don't see a correlation between Rambo and trains to warrant this set.

Of course. When I think of a hit comedy show about medical personnel during the Korean War, I think a train set would make sense given the context. (Friend of mine said the following:

Though my point still stands just from the episodes I've seen.)

This has the best '80s aesthetic I've seen for a train set.

As someone who launched Hot Wheel cars in front or over trains, I legit think this concept is fun.

Speaking of Hot Wheels...

As someone who still has this set, I can tell you that while it's fun, it's not compatible with HO tracks. A real bummer if you ask me.

I have a soft spot for train sets based on tractor brands (I have relatives who live in Eastern Washington who collect old tractors). The only unusual thing I could find is when they are a passenger set.

Which makes no sense considering what the IP is.

I don't see the connection between auto parts and trains, but the Photoshopped image on the box is cool.

Again, don't see much of a connection, in this case of NASCAR sets. However, if your train is taking a left hand turn every time it goes around the track then it makes sense (I guess). And that is the list of unusual train sets I could find for this post. This is not meant to say they're dumb. I actually find sets like these quite entertaining and fascinating, particularly the TYCO sets of Rambo, GI Joe, A-Team, and Transformers just for how niché they were. And these came out around the time Shining Time Station premiered.

STORYTIME

So there’s this mall in my area that used to have this lottery store that my mother used to go to allll the time.

In the display window there were a few loops of model track to advertise some of the toys [mostly bootlegs] that would be inside.

Since I was little I always *always* wanted the Christmas Lionel Thomas set from there. It’s the one with Annie and Clarabel, not the goods one you often see on the market.

However, all the time the guy would say it’s not for sale…. Until they decided to close the store!

So, because we were there often, I snagged up the whole [complete] set plus some extra HO/OO rolling stock for $50.

Thomas has the faces and everything I’m like so surprised about that, well worth it. :3

Workin on some old trains

20 Years ago, a movie based off a book was made, despite mixed reviews, it has become one of the most favorite Christmas movies of all time, today, it still holds up, and despite its dated graphics and uncanny nature, it has become a Christmas classic among railfans and people who grew up with it.

Hetch Hetchy Railroad in Black & White On30 Layout Tour with Steve Redeker

This guy is justifiably proud of his man cave. Historic b&w photos of Hetch Hetchy -- as beautiful scenery as Yosemite -- and he's built the model railroad in black and white with just a little "color pop" for contrast. It looks good! And he's quite an interesting explainer.

The real railroad ran from the Gold Country between Jamestown and Oakdale up along the Tuolumne River and up and over Poopenaut Pass to the Hetch Hetchy damsite, since it was that dam railroad. So perfect combining historical pictures with the b&w models -- this might be one of the the nicest On30 model railroads!

Today was eventful, I went to a program I go to every Saturday. I was home alone from 2:30 pm to around 5:30 pm, my family was out somewhere. It gave me time to complete decorating and set up the Lionel trains! (The Polar Express). At the end of the day, I got a pepper pizza with fries and a cherry Coke.
