The Scottish Boy by Alex de Campi - 5/5 stars

This book managed to rip my heart out at least 3 times. I loved it. Medieval enemies-to-lovers slow burn; very romantic. Kinda read like fanfiction at times but in a good way. 10/10 would read a follow-up love story about Arundel and Captain Wekena. If you like Captive Prince, give this one a try.

Reforged by Seth Haddon - 4/5 stars

Pretty good bodyguard romantasy. Ironically CS Pacat blurbed this one (another am-I-in-the-matrix moment). The world was interesting and I enjoyed the politics, though they're definitely not as complicated as other SFF politics I've gone feral over (see: Captive Prince, Winter's Orbit, A Memory Called Empire). I ordered the sequel after I finished this.

A Power Unbound by Freya Marske - 5/5 stars

Where do I start? I love, love, LOVE A Marvellous Light. It's one of my favorite books ever. None of the rest of the books in the trilogy could live up to it, really, because it's so good. You'll notice I rated this one 5 stars though, because quite honestly I fell prey to a bit of The Academy Paying The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Its Due syndrome. I did love this book and thought it was better than A Restless Truth (which I still loved!) but part of that is, quite frankly, just due to the fact that I prefer m/m romance to f/f romance.

Anyway. This was such a good finale to the trilogy. I loved that the romance was a giant middle finger to purity cultists. I loved that one of the mains was Italian. I loved finally getting the story of what happened to the Alston twins. One thing I thought was really cool was how, viewed from the outside, you totally get why Edwin is such a loner. I really admire from a writing perspective how Marske pulled that off.

I feel like there's a lot to be said about what Marske was trying to SAY with this book, but I definitely need to reread it first before I can articulate any of it. The purity culture stuff is obvious, but the magic system too. I feel like Jack when he's almost able to connect everything in his mind into a bigger idea, but he can't quite get there.

I've got a special edition from Illumicrate coming, so I'll be rereading it when I have that.

The Guncle by Steven Rowley - 5/5 stars

I saw this in bookstores for years before I finally gave in and bought it. The blurb makes it sound insufferable and twee. Ignore the blurb. This was such a good book about grief and learning how to live again after terrible loss.

I Like Me Better by Robby Weber - 4/5 stars

At last I can stop getting the Lauv song stuck in my head whenever I set eyes on this book (it's stuck in my head as I type this). Pretty standard-issue YA, but it was cute and had a good message.

The Stagsblood King by Gideon E Wood - 4/5 stars

Another book about moving on from grief! This is the second book in a trilogy. When I was trying to determine if I wanted to read on beyond book 1, I scoured the internet for information about what happens in books 2 and 3. Eventually I decided, hell, I enjoyed book 1 well enough, even if what I want to happen in the rest of the trilogy doesn't happen, they're worth reading. SO, to that end, I will tell anyone looking for info that Tel gets romantically involved with a new man in this one, which, eh. I still want him to somehow end up with Vared. It was still quite good though.

In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune - DNF at pg 82

So funnily, we were at the bookstore the day I was about to start reading this, and my wife pointed out Ravensong (also by Klune) to me and said, "Do you have this one?" I made a face and said, "That's an older one of his books and I'm wary of his early work after that horrible Verania series. I don't think I've ever read an author as hit or miss as TJ Klune."

I wrote the above when I was 60 pages in and now I have officially DNFed this. Listen. You know how in Thor: Love and Thunder, Taika Waititi was clearly given free rein to do whatever he wanted, so all of his worst impulses made it to the final cut unchecked? Yeah. That's what this book is like.

Here's my Storygraph review: I see Klune is officially Too Big To Edit now. This book has exactly the same problem that his awful Verania series had—a joke that's funny at first but quickly grows tiresome when it's repeated five times per page. The emphasis on Victor's asexuality was also weird and read like Klune was just super proud of himself for writing an ace character.

Lion's Legacy by LC Rosen - 4.25/5 stars

Queer, YA Indiana Jones, but less #problematic. This book had some eerie similarities to my own archaeology adventure novel(s), which made me wonder half-seriously if I somehow know Lev Rosen? Anyway, I feared this would be very heavy-handed and not nuanced on archaeology's ethical dilemmas, since it's YA and also the current culture is to view said dilemmas as completely black and white with no nuance, but I was pleasantly surprised. It manages to examine that, queerness, and daddy issues, plus has time to be a genuinely fun and exciting adventure story. Highly recommend.

Too White to be Coloured, Too Coloured to be Black by Ismail Lagardien - 4/5 stars

I picked up this memoir in a bookstore at OR Tambo airport in Johannesburg as research for Six Places to Fall in Love, since Percy is coloured. A pretty brutal read, but good, and definitely good research. The author was a photographer and journalist through the most violent years of apartheid.

The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson - 5/5 stars

Two nonfiction books in a row?? This is the second book by Erik Larson I've read, the first being the excellent The Devil in the White City. I'm not, in general, all that interested in WWII when it comes to military history, but this book is about the day to day lives of Churchill and the people surrounding him (with brief stops to visit FDR and high-ranking Nazis sprinkled throughout). This is a very, very good book, and I recommend reading it if only as a reminder of the resilience and bravery of ordinary people under terrifying circumstances.

Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh - 5/5 stars

Holy shit. Holy shit is this book good. Imagine the love child of Lost, Person of Interest, and Battlestar Galactica, but queer and with multiverse shenanigans thrown in.

I need everyone to read this book. Now. Yesterday. Get to it.

Rukiya Reference Sheet

Rukiya is the second born of Scar and Zira’s only litter, and was originally named Renhah. She had always been a feisty cub, but not in the same way as her youngest sisters and Nuka as she was more openly defiant. Rukiya was the cub who saw Scar’s distaste for them the clearest, while also seeing their mother’s growing resentment and neglect. By the time she was a cub she had already begun to resent her parents in return. At the same time Zira was pushing her litter to become strong fighters and hunters when they were young cubs. Refusing to relent, no matter how many times they pleaded for a break from training.

When Simba returned to Priderock Zira fled, grabbing her cubs and running from the fires. In the mass hysteria of it all, Rukiya was left behind. Once Zira had realized she was missing a cub, she was already almost out if Priderock, and didn't care enough for her daughter to risk returning to the raging fire to retrieve her.

After it all, she was found by Sarabi who presented her to Simba and explained who she was and that she wasn't like her mother at all. Simba allowed her to stay and welcomed her with open arms, even giving her a special role in the pride. She was to be the personal body guard for the future royal cubs and protect them with her life. She insisted that she must change her name to separate herself from her parents, thus Sarabi giving her the new name Rukiya.

I have the biggest desire to see Disney's Mufasa movie.

I also have the biggest fear about it, because out of every single Disney movie-- Lion King is the that is imprinted on my very soul in a way that no other is.

So I'm like...

Super excited and super nervous and anxious and so many things.

But at the same time--

I seriously don't like going to watch movies in theaters because --

No captions (and I have gotten SO used to watching with captions I don't know how people don't) and I also just... really don't hear well anyway.

Movies are pricey as fuck

You have to watch the entire freaking thing in ONE sitting, versus at home, when you can pause. Get up. Get a drink. Not miss anything if you need a break. Etc.

And that's just a few of the more obvious reasons off the top of my head.

But like... this movie... I've watched the trailer(s) so many times. And I just don't know how I want to go into it. What to expect.

The live-action version of the Lion King Disney did felt like a copy-paste job of the animated to me, so I wasn't super thrilled with it. And I think they seriously just marketed to that particular nostalgia age group for reasons and--like I said--copy-pasted a script together. It felt that way and just... didn't flow.

The fact that this is more of an "original" story gives me a bit more hope, I guess? Because like, there's nothing to copy-paste from? But at the same time, if they retcon anything from my childhood, I don't know what I'll do!

an updated disney princess legacy challenge

hello!

i have been playing my own version of disney princess legacy challenge since a year and a half now, and i’m about to finish it soon. i have immensely enjoyed playing this legacy, and would like to thank its original creator, MissPlaying. in my game, i created my own version of the challenge by combining rules from three sources and adding my own spice on the mix. i think the result has become a much more story-oriented and aesthetic heavy version that is more challenging than the original but prioritizes the narrative over task solving. i have a lot of respect for the previous versions, and mine is just one take among the others, but if you’d like to give it a try, go ahead!

some notes: i didn’t want to follow the original order or go chronologically because then all the classical early disney princesses come one after the other, making it a bit boring in my view. shuffling older and more recent princesses makes it interesting with very different types of characters following each other, and this particular order worked well for the transitions within my storyline. second, i focused this around the disney princesses whose films i actually watched, so pocahontas and some of the newer princesses are lacking, but feel free to add them if you want. lastly, when i started playing this, i had very few packs. so my rules kind of reflect the way i gradually acquired more of the packs. feel free to tailor it according to the packs you have! for each gen, i determined a city to live and an aesthethic. if you follow those, please tag me in your photos, i’d love to see!

hi! i just finished distraction in the hunters universe and just started arcove’s bright side - i’m super enjoying them so far! i did have a bit of a question when it comes to the worldbuilding if that’s all right to ask? do the creasia have a taboo against incest, or does it not matter after a certain point of relation? i’m curious if only because carmine and wisteria are both related through arcove (arcove being his son and wisteria his granddaughter) and attention is drawn to that in the narrative, in terms of how much they both look like and take after arcove. is this sort of thing generally accepted in creasia society, or is it given a pass since they’re both higher-ranking? i’m not asking to be a weird freak or anything, it just kind of hit me as a “oh right that’s a little odd” when i realized fully, haha. genuinely just curious - but also feel 100% free to delete this if that’s not something you’d want to discuss on your tumblr blog, i get that it’s kind of A Bummer by nature. again, super genuinely enjoying the books, i really love your prose and how the world feels so deeply lived in and real and how textured every character is, even the minor ones. wisteria is also an absolute icon with her two boyfriends, god bless her lmao

I'll answer your question, but I've done so in even more detail here - https://shop.abigailhilton.com/b/1HLeF (it's a free download) These are essays I wrote while researching lions for Distraction and Bright Side. I examine the potential for inbreeding depression, not just in creasia, but also in ferryshaft and other species on Lidian. I talk about the (highly bisexual) biology of real lions, the ways in which I modeled creasia on them, and the ways in which I made creasia different. In answer to your question, real lions have no inbreeding taboo. Ruling males don't usually hold a pride long enough to mate with their adult daughters. Teenaged males have a strong instinct to roam once they hit puberty. They travel far from their natal prides and seek to take over a distant pride. Females stay with their natal pride. That's how real lions avoid inbreeding. If young males are prevented from roaming (by habitat fragmentation), they may end up taking over a pride with relatives and will mate with them. I have given my creasia some degree of incest taboo, partially because I think it's too difficult for humans to relate to them otherwise and partially because I think it's a useful trait to have evolved, what with their limited range and food supply. They have an incest taboo that applies to siblings and parents, possibly great-grand parents. Those would be the most generically dangerous pairings. However, their are many other types of relatedness that humans recognize that creasia do not. In addition, creasia generations run into each other in ways that could not happen in human beings. Human women enter menopause right about the time that their daughters hit puberty. In creasia, mothers and daughters will have babies at the same time, perhaps for decades. Creasia are teenagers capable of reproduction at 4, young adults at 6, and fully adult by 8-10. Historically, most alpha males have died in fights by their 20's or 30's, while females and unambitious clutter males have sometimes lived into their 60's. This allows plenty of time for generations to run into each other. Now they're living even longer because they're becoming less violent. In this milieu, you would see generational pairings that would seem strange and impossible to human beings. Carmine is Wisteria's half uncle on her father's side and her great-half uncle on his mother's side. It really is a pretty twisty family tree. FYI, Wisteria has 2 kings in her ancestry. Ketch was Caraca's father. Creasia would not regard this as a close familial relationship or any form of incest. Indeed, it's unlikely to cause their cubs any problems. Arcove has been a very successful male creasia, which means his genes are going to be dominant in the population for quite a while. Halvery even more so (lol). In real lions, nearly all the females will contribute genetically to the population, but not so the males. A tiny percentage of the most successful males will sire all the cubs. Sebastian & Garreth have the day off & go visit Ominis, but the boys are in for a surprise of their own.

Garreth & Sebastian couldn't turn away at who happened to be leading the team in the place with the bosses out of town. "Bloody hell! I didn't think Gaunt was going to be left in charge today, not with as packed out as the place is." Sebastian was the first one in the door that morning, had seen the place fill to capacity within an hour & it hadn't stopped. "It was just the two of us at opening time & he told me it was his turn to run the place since his boss & the assistants are out in London for a corporate meeting. He has more seniority than the rest of the staff save for those three uppermost managers. I don't know how he does it since most usually want nothing to do with him. Maybe it's because he's on the clock & everyone knows he can't act up while working that they've all filled the place." The brunette turned towards the redhead in front of him, trying to hold back a laugh at the thought.

"Ha! Ominis may have a sharp tongue, but he keeps the place up no matter who he's with. Plus.... I've noticed a few of the ladies in here stealing looks at him." Garreth hadn't been there as long as Sebastian had been, seeing as how he came closer to lunch time than at breakfast. Sebastian wasn't scheduled to work that day & neither was Garreth, but since both of them had the day off, they decided to work on their projects at the little coffee shop that Ominis worked at.

Sebastian ran a branch of BACA in Hogsmeade which kept him busy with countless children needing assistance in the courts against their abusers & none came more fierce than he did. Although his main job was still Head Auror of the Ministry, his work between the department & the club earned him clearance to the muggle world to help the kids of both worlds. In having such a rare day off, he had to come visit his best friend. "It's a bit of a shame that my best friend doesn't have the day off, but I know he's getting overtime for it today."

Garreth let out a little giggle at the thought of the trouble the three of them would cause if Ominis got the day off. "Come on Sebastian, you know the three of us would be causing mischief with the kids you work with if Ominis had the day off! You KNOW we'd get nothing done & goof off." Sebastian stuck his tongue out with a sly smirk on his face. "Nothing wrong with that! When was the last time WE got to go have that level of fun anyway?" Garreth put his head down as he broke into a face-hurting round of laughter. Garreth, being the inventive Weasley that he was, not only ran the potion shop in Hogsmeade with Mr. Pippin, but also helped his aunt at Hogwarts as substitute professor for Professor Sharp when he had to be out. His aunt & Pippin himself agreed to give Garreth the day off with Sebastian since the minister had popped in at Hogwarts to check on the staff for his annual audit.

Ominis, having heard the two of them in the corner, shook his head as he finished brewing the drinks his two friends were enjoying. He was blind, but his hearing was second to none & so were his senses of smell & taste. It wasn't like he could ignore his friends either since they came in on their day off, so he walked all the way to the back of the shop to where Sallow & Weasley sat. "You don't think I didn't hear that? I heard every bit of it. I had today planned off, but those in power just HAD to have their weekend meeting. You'll have to forgive me this time as it wasn't my fault this came about." Clearly, the blond wasn't too happy in having to work & miss a day out with his friends. He was heartbroken, but determined to make it up to them. "I already told Lera, Mika & Sirus that if I worked today I wanted Valentine's Day off with no setbacks & no excuses. My day off request was negated today, so hopefully they make it a point to allow me off for the holiday. The last thing I need is to be flirted with on that love-sickening day by females"

Natty, having chosen to stay in Scotland & try her hand to learn more on the delicious drinks, made her way to the boys just as he finished talking. "Ominis, you've ran the place since six this morning & we have friends here. Go on, take an hour or two off to go be with them. I'll take your place as your second in command. Besides... it has been a bit since since I've seen the three of you enjoy yourselves like you used to." She hugged all three of the boys before returning to the bar, happily waving at them. She had come in at ten that morning, ready to take on the lunch crowd & took the reigns from the heir. "Come on everybody! Let's get to it! I'm giving Ominis a break since he came in early to get our morning rush taken care of."
