Alpha-olefin sulfonates (AOS) alkyl sulfates (AS) are also instances of commercial anionic surfactants. They are nonvolatile compounds produced by sulfonation.
LAS are complex mixtures of homologues of different alkyl chain lengths (C10 to C13 or C14) and phenyl positional isomers of 2 to 5-phenyl in proportions dictated by the starting materials. The properties of LAS differ in physically and chemically as per the alkyl chain length, resulting in formulations for various applications. The starting material LAB (linear alkyl benzene) is manufactured by the alkylation of benzene with n-paraffins in the presence of aluminum chloride (AlCl3) or hydrogen fluoride (HF) as a catalyst. Other sulfonation alternative reagents include sulfuric acid, chlorosulfonic acid, diluted sulfur trioxide, and sulfamic acid on falling film reactors. LAS are then neutralized to the required salt (sodium, ammonium, calcium, potassium, and triethanolamine salts) in the linear alkyl benzene market.
Linear alkyl benzene sulfonic acid is mainly used for producing household detergents inclusive of dishwashing liquids laundry powders, laundry liquids, and the other household cleaners as well as in several industrial applications such as a coupling agent and as an emulsifier for agricultural herbicides and in emulsion polymerization.
