And where the frozen membrane breaks— where the sky and the ice exchange likeness in a winter reflection— he can see the truth. The boreal wind exhales through him and the dusted shards of the ether swirl like they too might be translating a vision over the lake.

The crystallised sky cracks as Évariste's heart beats again. Countless frozen roses shatter, their thorns and coiling snares drawing at his clothing in one last bid to keep him here, in the space between worlds, but the sky tilts and the churn of the axis begins once again.

The evergreen's reflections yawn into spider-finger italics and the clouds exhale into a rush of dark, glacial water— the hand of his pocket watch twitch before they begin again and, when he is brought back to the frigid earth, he breathes a shivered cloud of frosted white.

Voices whisper through the closing seam. He's halfway delirious as his grandfather leans over him, panting after the labour it takes to restart a human heart— but Évariste knows nothing of clarity. He only knows that was is above is reflected so below; he sees it now, the nightmare reflected back in his one violet iris, as he fixes on the place that Merowald's left eye used to be.

"You—" he breathes, his face contorting with horror's rigor, "It was you."
