Regret: Jeffery from Blood in Moderation

Jeffery supposed, looking back on things, that he had more regrets than he ought to. There was a part of him that enjoyed being this way, a disgusting part, really. But he had to admit, in his rare moments of silence- it felt good.

The strength, the power, the immortality- he liked biting and tearing and how much better meat tasted.

And he liked killing.

After getting over the initial horror of being changed, the way his body had transformed and twisted under the mutation. It moved different, felt different, looked different; a face almost just like his, but not, with slitted eyes staring back at him in the mirror. It had taken a century for him not to care anymore.

No wonder Rom, or Boris now, had lost so much of his mind- that he fought off flinching at the mere mention of his birth name. And it was his fault, wasn’t it?

He’d been so reckless; young and stupid and human. The magic’s singing in his ear; so self-assured, convinced of his own prowess and birthright. The possibility of losing so utterly unthinkable.

The war had been his to win. At least he’d thought.

He’d underestimated his uncle, after everything. Stupid. He regretted that the most; being such a fool. And it had gotten them all killed, those people that relied on him, trusted him. He wished, even now after everything, he could have been better.

Worse still, it was his fault he and his men had been turned. Mutated and transformed by forbidden alchemy- dark blood magics’ that should have been left forgotten- and he had the audacity to find enjoyment in it.

Perverted. Disgusting mockery.

Being beheaded had been a surprising relief. He’d gotten to be nothing for so long- and he liked being nothing. Even as he healed; flesh and sinew growing anew over gnarled and warped bones, his mind had been that of an animal- nothing but hunger and the chase- simple.

As awareness had clawed its way back into Jeffery’s mind, he decided the only plausible explanation for his continued existence was due to the unfinished business with his uncle.

And he owed it to the others, didn’t he?

It made things poetic if he thought of it that way. Gave the world a certain romantic quality. As if there had to be some higher meaning behind it all. If the world was a story then it was his duty to give this narrative a proper end.

He’d let them all be turned, then abandoned them; killing his uncle was the least he could do, really.

That’s all that mattered.

And once he was finished, maybe he could be nothing again.
