Bittersweet
Slowly he turned and cupped her cheek with his left hand he looked as if he were going to speak but thought better of it and instead pressed his forehead to hers and closed his eyes. In that moment it spoke more to her than any words could have. It was over before she was ready. He put his hand down to his side, pulling away from her. Her heart skipped not yet it called to her, keep him it begged but she knew she could not. Without her permission her hand shot out seeking his and pulled him back to her if this was to be their last private moments she would not waste them. He put up no resistance as their bodies melded together her arms wrapping around his waist. She laid her head on his chest if only to hear his strong heartbeat assuring her he was here before her and alive in this moment. She raised her face up to him connecting their lips in a dance they both knew, the familiar comfort that always came was absent for her. In its wake a desperation to make sure he understood all the love she felt for him. As their tongues met each an extension of their strong wills she hoped it conveyed all that she could not voice. Once they ran out of air she finally pulled away looking at him again and her heart skipped for a different reason as he smiled at her. His smile never failed even after all this time to move her. “I hope this will be my greeting upon my return” his arms tightened around her.
“As soon as you cross into the city, in front of all your troops ” she promised softly and he chuckled. “Please” it slipped out before she could stop it and she fought down the tears.
Even with one word he knew what she needed,
“Your love is like a shield, I wear it as surely as i wear my cape. I did not accept this task lightly but know I will always find my way back to you.” He told her.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath whispering “I have loved you for centuries, Haldir. I plan to love you for many more be it in this life or the next there is no where you could venture that I will not follow”
He kissed her forehead then like he had so many times before, his way of saying I love you. “I must go my love” he said softly and he turned then to head to meet his troops it would be a long march to Helms deep. She of course followed one step behind as she always did. She would go to see him off and she mourned his loss before he stepped foot outside their talon. Because here in their home he did not have to be a Commander here he was just Haldir. Here he was just a brother and a spouse. Here he did not carry the weight of Lothlorien on his shoulders but once he stepped outside he would assume that responsibility like a second skin.
The air was warm, the breeze gentle as they made it to the center of their city. She knew the protocol and she came beside him her left hand grasp his right and his thumb caressed her hand for just a moment. She squeezed gently and moved to take her place next to those who were also being left behind.
She found Elera and Lindell both standing together offering silent support and she joined them. She took one of each of their hands in hers. As much as she hated when Haldir hid himself behind his persona she also wore one in these moments. She was the commanders wife, he duty to those that are here in this circle with her, especially her sister in laws. She had no encouragement to give as the troops moved into formation and even surprised herself by tuning out the Lord and Lady’s speech. Her eyes went once more to his strong back, red cape and gold armor underneath. As he turned to command his army his eyes met hers for a moment, she mouthed “I love you” and the slight tilt of his head seemed to echo the sentiment. She stood her back straight her hands clasp with her sister in laws as she watched her heart march toward the battle of Helms deep.

In next chapter, El arrives to Lindell's estate at night and...
I press myself against the wall, closing my eyes, listening. The only sound is the faint murmur of voices probably coming from the dining room according to the hour. Halden and Liam. The low rumble of Liam’s laugh echoes through the silence, followed by Halden’s sharper tone. Liam’s laughing. With Halden. I must be fucking delirious.
..
Liam’s face breaks into a sloppy, half-asleep grin. « You’re here…, » he murmurs, as if trying to make sense of it, still half-dazed. He probably wasn’t expecting me for days. I lean in, looking down at him. « And you're drunk. » He reeks of whiskey. Liam grins, a lazy, satisfied smile spreading across his face. « Had to share the duke's private stash with your prince. His idea. Would’ve been rude not to. »
oh well... that explains it.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
March 6, 2023
Heather Cox Richardson
The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) met in Washington, D.C., over the weekend, sparking speculation over the 2024 Republican presidential field. Hard-right figures like Donald Trump and his loyalists Mike Lindell, the MyPillow entrepreneur, and Kari Lake, who lost the 2022 race for Arizona governor, attended, along with House Judiciary Committee chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) and right-wing media figure Steve Bannon, but many of those testing the 2024 presidential waters gave it a miss. CPAC started in 1974, and since then it has been a telltale for the direction the Republican Party is going. This year was no exception. CPAC was smaller this year than in the past, and it showcased the Republican extremism that is far outside the mainstream of normal American politics. “Feels like MAGA country!” Donald Trump, Jr., told the crowd. The headliner was former president Trump, twice impeached, deeply involved in an attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election, and embroiled in a range of criminal investigations. In his speech, Trump embraced his leadership of those hardening around a violent mentality based in grievance that echoes that of fascist movements. “In 2016, I declared: I am your voice,” he said. “Today, I add: I am your warrior. I am your justice. And for those who have been wronged and betrayed: I am your retribution.” He claimed that he and his followers are “engaged in an epic struggle to rescue our country from the people who hate it and want to absolutely destroy it…. We are going to finish what we started. We started something that was a miracle. We’re going to complete the mission, we’re going to see this battle through to ultimate victory. We’re going to make America great again.” After listing all the “villains and scoundrels” he and his followers would “demolish,” “drive out,” “cast out,” “throw off,” “beat,” “rout,” and “evict,” he continued: “We have no choice. This is the final battle.” Other Republican hopefuls are waiting in the wings. Trump has, in fact, never won the popular vote, and his leadership has brought historic losses for the party, but his control over his voting base makes him the front-runner for the Republican nomination. Other candidates seem to be hoping that criminal indictments will knock Trump out of the race and open space for them without making them take a stand against Trump and thus alienate his followers. It seems likely that if such an indictment were forthcoming, they would blame Democrats for Trump’s downfall and hope to ride to office with his voting bloc behind them, without having to embrace that voting blocs’ ideology. That hope seems delusional, considering the increasing emphasis of the Trump Republicans and their imitators on violence. The Republicans are hitting on a constant refrain that crime is on the upswing in the U.S. Since crime does not, in fact, seem to be rising, it seems worth noting that an emphasis on crime justifies the use of state power to combat that crime and normalizes the idea of violence against “criminals,” a category the Republican Party is defining more and more broadly. This will be an extremely difficult genie to stuff back into a bottle, especially as leading Republican figures are increasingly talking in martial terms and referring to the U.S. Civil War. That emphasis on violence corresponds with something else on display at this year’s CPAC: how completely the Republican Party now depends on a false narrative constructed out of lies. CPAC fact checkers had their work cut out for them. Linda Qiu of the New York Times found Trump repeated a number of things previously identified as incorrect as well as adding some new ones. Politifact fact checked other speakers and found they, too, continued to develop the idea of a country run by those who hate it and are eager to undermine it. Various speakers said the Department of Justice is calling parents worried about their kids’ educations “terrorists” (false), fentanyl will kill you if any of it touches your skin, thus putting us all at deadly risk (false), cartels have “operational control” of the U.S.-Mexico border (false), and Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky has said he wants America’s “sons and daughters to go die in Ukraine” (again, false). Right-wing media amplifies this narrative. Depositions in the Dominion Voting Systems defamation lawsuit against the Fox News Corporation made it very clear that both Fox News executives and hosts work closely with Republican operatives to spread a Republican narrative, even when it is based on lies—in that case, in the lie that Trump won the election, which they privately agreed was ridiculous. So, when House speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) gave to FNC personality Tucker Carlson exclusive access to 44,000 hours of video from the footage from the Capitol on January 6, 2021, he indicated the Republicans will continue to try to garner support with a false narrative. Carlson’s coverage of the videos started tonight, with him depicting the rioters as “sightseers” and claiming that other media outlets have lied about the violence on January 6. In reality, Carlson simply didn’t show the many hours of violent footage: more than 1,000 people have been arrested on charges relating to their actions surrounding January 6, more than half have pleaded guilty, and around one third of those charged were charged with assaulting, resisting, or impeding police officers. McCarthy’s desperation to maintain the party’s narrative shows in his unilateral decision to give Carlson exclusive access to that video. A wide range of media outlets are clamoring for equal access to the footage while congressional Democrats are demanding to know on what authority McCarthy gave Carlson that access. The House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol had arranged to transfer the films to the National Archives, but when the Republicans rewrote the rules in January, they instead transferred the video to the House Administration Committee. McCarthy did not consult the committee when he gave access to the films to Carlson. Nor did he consult House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), who has noted that releasing the films without consultation with the Capitol Police is a security risk. Instead, McCarthy apparently coordinated with Representative Barry Loudermilk (R-GA), chair of the Subcommittee on Oversight. Loudermilk led a tour of the Capitol complex on January 5, 2021. Representative Norma J. Torres (D-CA), ranking member of the Oversight Subcommittee, told Justin Papp of Roll Call that McCarthy “totally went around, not just the subcommittee, but the entire committee…. I hope Ethics will have something to say about this. I think it needs to be investigated on all different levels.” In contrast, House Administration Committee chair Bryan Steil (R-WI) appeared unconcerned with the end run around the responsible committee, saying that “the key is that we’re balancing the transparency that’s needed for the American people with the security interests of the House.” Republicans are planning to take this disinformation campaign across the nation. Despite their insistence that they want to slash government spending, Republican leaders are in fact urging their colleagues to engage in “field hearings” that will take their “message” straight to voters at a time when they are not managing to accomplish much of anything at all in Washington. Jordan’s Judiciary Committee has requested a travel budget of $262,000, more than 30 times what it spent on travel last year and 3 times what it spent before the pandemic, and it is not just the Judiciary Committee that is hitting the road. As Annie Karni and Catie Edmondson of the New York Times noted today, this also means that they speak at the plants of Republican donors, thus giving them free advertising. Congressional Democrats say they received almost no notice of these trips.

MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, an ally of former President Trump, accused Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Thursday of being a “Trojan horse,” calling into question the governor’s conservative credentials.
“The media is covering up for Ron DeSantis,” Lindell asserted while speaking on the floor of the convention centre at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in a video shared online. “He is a Trojan Horse; he is the Trojan Horse. Do not believe anything you’re reading in the media about Ron DeSantis.”
Lindell pointed to DeSantis’s battle with Disney, which ignited after the company pushed back on the state’s Parental Rights in Education law. The law, which became known to critics as the “Don’t Say Gay” law, limited instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in elementary schools.
“Now I’ll tell you what: Ron DeSantis — and he’s got money behind him — did he do anything for Disney? Remember that was the big thing; you’re going after Disney,” Lindell said. “He did nothing; they got everything they wanted, everything.”
DeSantis has long battled Disney and on Monday signed a bill ending Walt Disney World’s self-governing status and establishing a new state-controlled district, giving the governor more power over the area. The company has maintained control over the Reedy Creek Improvement District since the late 1960s.
Lindell’s criticisms of DeSantis echo those voiced by Trump, who has previously labelled the Florida governor a “RINO,” or Republican in Name Only. The former president has also attacked DeSantis’s COVID-19 response, taking aim at his support for vaccines.
The My Pillow executive has been a staunch supporter of Trump and has repeatedly pushed false claims about widespread fraud in the 2020 election.
DeSantis has not yet announced a decision on whether he’ll run for president in 2024, but he is viewed as Trump’s biggest competition for the Republican nomination.
The Florida governor is notably absent from this weekend’s CPAC, instead opting for a jam-packed travel schedule to promote his new book and attend several GOP dinners. He is also set to make an appearance at the Club for Growth’s annual donor retreat.
Trump is slated to speak at CPAC on Saturday night, while former South Carolina governor and 2024 presidential candidate Nikki Haley (R) will speak on Friday. Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is also mulling a 2024 bid, will also speak at the event.

The clown wars.
Tumblr media
December 15, 2022
With the predicted "red wave" failing to materialize, civil war has broken out amongst Republicans, pitting GOPer against GOPer and MAGA against MAGA. Even now, some Republicans are openly blaming disgraced former president Donald Trump for the Party's humiliating losses in the midterms, as well as for his brazen hobnobbing with antisemites. “I don't think anybody should be spending any time with [leading Jew hater] Nick Fuentes,” harrumphed House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
Former UN ambassador Nikki Haley (who apparently can't decide whether to support him or not) criticized Trump last year for stoking the US Capitol riot. Declared Haley to Politico, “I think he’s going to find himself further and further isolated.” And "he’s lost any sort of political viability he was going to have.” Trump, naturally, lashed back at Haley, but has reserved his worst insults for Florida's wannabe emperor Ron DeSantis ever since polls started showing him overtaking Trump as the preferred 2024 GOP presidential candidate.
Sniping has also broken out in the US Senate. The Wall Street Journal recently detailed the poisonous relationship between Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and senatorial campaign chief Rick Scott, each blaming the other for the GOP not regaining control of the upper body. Scott has been joined by the likes of Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley and Marco Rubio in calling for a change in the Party's Senate leadership.
Meanwhile, over in the House, the zanies of the MAGA-crazed Freedom Caucus are clamoring for McCarthy's head on a pike and vowing to deny him the Speakership. It will require 218 votes for him to be elected, but a spokesman for Freedom Caucus chairman Andy Biggs told Faux News, "McCarthy doesn't have 218 and there will be an alternative challenger."
Yet, even that appalling collection of fruitcakes is divided, with the odious Marjorie Taylor Greene breaking ranks and (having apparently been offered a juicy committee assignment) supporting McCarthy. MAGA hero Roger Stone thereupon announced himself "very disappointed" with Greene. And Noel Fritsch, publisher of the right-wing National File echoed, “I’m obviously off the Marjorie train.”
Hostilities have even reached into the Republican National Committee itself. Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel — who dropped her maiden name Romney to show her fealty to Trump — is running for reelection. But she's also being criticized for the Party's lackluster showing in November and faces challenges for the committee chair position from a conservative California committeewoman and deranged pillow pusher Mike Lindell.
So stand back, stand by and grab your popcorn. The GOP’s buffoonish free-for-all is under way. And just think how entertaining the infighting will be if Trump is denied the Republican presidential nomination in 2024.
