I think this is my favorite song off this album, and while there are MANY notable things about this song musically (or lyrically; god damn, Phantom Blue had the best fucking lyrics in ALL OF '80S HEAVY METAL, or maybe even of all classic heavy metal?), can I just say: THOSE DRUMS, THOUGH...especially in the outro. Linda McDonald KILLED IT on this, omgggggggggg.
And thank FUCKING GOD there is live footage of this song, because, OH MY GOD...it's orgasmic. And I absolutely never say that, but it's necessary here. Everything about the band's performance (ignoring the probably drunk concertgoers who get up on stage, lol) is fucking perfect. And the combination of Michelle Meldrum and Nicole Couch...holy fucking shit, does ANY band (but I suppose I would, especially in heavy metal?) have a combination of such skilled guitarists [who can alternate covering lead, and, might I add, PRETTY AMAZINGLY, TOO, IN BOTH REGARDS]?!
youtube
Go ahead, watch this. And then pick your jaw and panties up off the floor, among other things...

A Birthday Tribute to Stephen Sondheim
We interrupt your regularly scheduled Diva posts and polls with a 24-hour Stephen Sondheim lockdown to recognize an honorary Broadway Diva and certified musical theatre god.
Tumblr media
Stephen Joshua Sondheim (1930) was a legendary composer and lyricist who essentially reinvented the American musical with his soaring scores and fiendishly clever lyrics. With Oscar Hammerstein as his mentor, he began his Broadway career writing lyrics for West Side Story (1957) and Gypsy (1959). Throughout his life, he won eight Tony Awards, including a Special Tony, more than any other composer. His dedicating to writing fascinating, flawed, fantastic roles for women (particularly women of a certain age) means his work is some of the most sought-after of our Divas.
Sondheim Theatre and Concert Credits:
I have done the research and pulled together a list of every single role our Divas have played, and every Sondheim concert they have participated in. Here are just a few takeaways.
All together, 64 Divas have had a whopping 245 roles/concerts and counting.
Eleven Divas have never (to my knowledge) performed in a Sondheim or at a Sondheim-specific concert. Seven of those are non-singing actresses, leaving just four musically-inclined Divas bereft. (Brenda Braxton, Lillias White, Linda Eder, Ute Lemper). However, all four Divas have performed Sondheim's songs in their personal concert repertoires
Eighteen Divas have done just one Sondheim, some in particularly obscure contexts.
The most common roles are The Witch (Into the Woods - 9), Mrs. Lovett (Sweeney Todd - 8), Mama Rose (Gypsy - 8), Desiree Armfeldt (A Little Night Music - 8), Phyllis Rogers Stone (Follies - 6). More on that later.
Most Frequent Sondheim Performers:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bernadette Peters: 21 Highlights include: Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, Follies, Gypsy.
Patti LuPone: 20 Highlights include: Company, Sweeney Todd, Gypsy, Anyone Can Whistle.
Marin Mazzie: 13 Highlights include: Passion, Merrily We Roll Along, Into the Woods, Anyone Can Whistle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Audra McDonald: 11 Highlights include: Sweeney Todd, Passion, Six by Sondheim, A Little Night Music.
Donna Murphy: 11 Highlights include: Passion, Into the Woods, Anyone Can Whistle, Follies.
Christine Baranski: 11 Highlights include: Company, Sunday in the Park with George, Sweeney Todd, Follies.
Tony Awards and Nominations:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leading Actress in a Musical: 14 Nominations (exc. wins) | 5 Divas 9 Wins | 4 Divas
Mama Rose in Gypsy is the most-decorated role in musical theatre canon, and arguably the best role for women period. In five productions, every actress has either been nominated (Ethel Merman, Bernadette Peters), or won (Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Patti LuPone).
Both Desiree Armfeldt actresses have won their respective years (Glynis Johns, Catherine Zeta-Jones). Additional winning roles have been Phyllis Rogers Stone (Alexis Smith), Mrs. Lovett (Angela Lansbury), The Baker's Wife (Joanna Gleason), and Fosca (Donna Murphy).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Featured Actress in a Musical: 17 Nominations (exc. wins) | 4 Divas 4 Wins | 1 Diva
Some of the most common roles to be nominated for in a Sondheim show are Amy and Joanne from Company (in the original production, Elaine Stritch competed in Leading Actress), and Louise in Gypsy. No featured role has netted more than one award.
Winners: Patricia Elliott (Charlotte, ALNM), Laura Benanti (Louise, Gypsy), Karen Olivo (Anita, West Side Story), and Patti LuPone (Joanne, Company).

gay little boy writes fan fiction part two.
Ruth Fleming has a hard time at a family reunion. 872 words, aggressive headcannons added :3 enjoy
Ruth never liked her family all that much. They were.. a lot, to say the least. Unaccepting, bitchy, loud, the list goes on. Ruth has eight siblings– too many, if you ask her. All of them piss her off in some different way. And don’t get her started on her parents. They’re not.. horrible, but— Overall, she tried to stay out of the house as much as she could.
So, easy to say family reunions were not fun. Big families, for some fucking reason, were common for their family tree. Really common.
A fight had broken out. As often happens, with the sheer amount of people. Ruth had migrated into the kitchen. All she could hear now was vague yelling with her headphones on. Fuck. She wasn’t crying, was she? she looked up from the corner she was sitting in to grab a napkin or something, startled to find someone else. A taller, blonde woman. She was just sorta looking at Ruth uncomfortably.
“You look like shit. Are you ok..?”
She hesitated, a grimace on her face. Ruth nodded awkwardly, stood up and tried to act like she was doing anything other than pathetically crying in the kitchen of her dead grandma or whatever.
“Uh- yeah! Yeah. Yeah, totally fine. I’m— I was,” Ruth sniffled, glancing at the casserole on the counter. “Getting more food! Casserole. Yeah.”
The woman nodded awkwardly and Ruth was forced, by her own lie, to take a plate and a piece of casserole. She didn’t eat any yet. Both of them just stood there, trying not to look at each other.
“Youuuu.. want some?”
Ruth tried and held up another place and spatula hopefully. Anything to break the dreadful silence. Well, not quite silence. There was still the yelling. Maybe even awkward silence was better than having to listen to that.
“S..sure. Sure, kid.”
Ruth nodded and handed the other a serving after hearing her reply. She leaned against the counter and ate a spoonful of food. She stifled a cough.Too much salt, and somehow, not enough flavor? The older woman grimaced.
“This casserole tastes like shit.”
The blonde spoke, causing Ruth to laugh out loud. Ruth had basically never talked to this woman before, she knows that she’s technically related to her? She’s seen her around other family events and photos sometimes, but she wouldn’t know her name or how to act around her. And one of the first things she’s ever said to Ruth was insulting someone’s shitty casserole.
“Yeah! It fucken does! It’s too salty but it also doesn’t taste like shit!”
“God, never letting Cathrine into MY house with food again. Walmart cookies are better than this.”
Ruth smiled and giggled again, feeling safe enough to take off the headphones. She regretted this quickly, hearing the fight escalate. They were yelling so loud and calling names — Ruth couldn’t even hear what they were saying anymore, it was just loud. Ruth put the headphones back on immediately and tried to ignore it, taking a few deep breaths.
“I’m— I’m Linda, technically, your aunt. Feel like that’s important.”
Linda noticed Ruth’s demeanor shifting. She also came into the kitchen to catch a break from the fighting, after all. Ruth sniffled and nodded.
“Ruth. Sorry, I— I’m fine.”
She pressed her hands to her ears. Linda dug around in her purse for a second and fished out some jangly keys.
“You wanna go.. get ice cream? Or something? Whatever you kids like. Starrrrbuckss…? I’m getting pretty tired of the damn volume in here. I’ll buy.”
Ruth pondered for a second. Why was she offering to buy ice cream for her niece she JUST met? Should she really get into a car alone with a random woman? I mean, they ARE related.. Ah, whatever..
“Really? I mean- that’d— that’d be really nice of you, if you’re willing, I just— It’s so loud and—“
“Let’s go, kid. McDonald’s sound alright?”
Ruth nodded and followed Linda outside — through the back door, into her SUV. They pulled into a drive through after Linda reapplied lipstick and turned on whatever trashy music was on the radio. One bad cover of TikTok by Kesha Ruth had to sit through later, Ruth had a large ice cream she probably shouldn’t have and Linda an iced tea. By now it was late enough for the McDonald’s employees to be annoyed that they were there, and Ruth to be yawning on the drive back.
“Thank you again aunt Linda.”
Ruth mumbled, rubbing her eyes.
“Of course. I’m not too fond of the annual reunions. Let me know if you want a .. break from the next one, you’re one of the least irritating people I’m related to.”
Linda snickered, and though her words weren’t terribly ‘nice’ she spoke with a warmth that Ruth felt she could get used to. She yawned again and leaned towards the side of the car. She was juuust gonna rest her eyes.. Blink. Blink. Blink……..
When Ruth woke up, in her bed, at home, it almost felt like a dream, the only thing she to remember it by was a sticky note stuck to her forehead with a phone number and ‘Your favorite aunt.’ written in pink gel pen.

─ When I'm out of faith, she's my idol. I just killed a man, she's my alibi.
─ Amor, vamos pegar as coisas pro piquenique!
