Hello!! I was just wondering if you have some outfit references for Viktor throughout the story?
I absolutely adore your writing and it inspired me to draw some more vik đ
Canât wait for the next chapterđ¤
Hey there! When I tell you Iâm beyond stoked that AASB sparked some art inspo đđ ahhhHH thatâs incredible!
I donât have any images really, and as far as colors for a lot of viktorâs outfits I leave it a little open so the reader can picture him as they want as far as color scheme :) personally while heâs still home in the undercity I hc him with warm or neutral colors (browns/rust/grays) but I could see him in some dark greens too based on what he was wearing when he was just a lil guy.
As far as the types of outfits Iâve written him in so far, itâs late fall/early winter so cold weather outfits have been the main vein there.
When the reader meets him near that alleyway in the beginning heâs got a slim-fit jacket on with a striped button down and some slightly worn trousers for his presentation.
The date night wardrobe is a little more zaunite/worn down attire since theyâre going down by the runoff/will get dirtyâhereâs the section I wrote for that (with a typo, super cute of me đ)
Viktorâs jacket is patched at one elbow and completely frayed at the cuffs. The worn-in striped shirt beneath tugs nicely across his chest and is messily tucked in on one side of his trousers that parachute at the knees but tapper at his boots.
And then heâs got the readerâs baggy gray sweatpants and a black tee on one night when they get drunk, and the current chapter heâs got a loose-fitted tee/crewneck and some lounge pants he got from the night market so heâs in some comfies too haha
I hope this helps, but if it doesnt just let me know what kind of details youâre looking for and Iâll do my best!
Next chapter is in the works! Iâm really liking the style/flow of it so far, Iâm still trying to figure out whoâs going where lol I had a reader show interest in us topping so tinkering with that as we speak. Iâll add a little teaser to the intro under the cut though (itâs rough and will probably change a little) but hereâs the start of it as of right now if youâre interested :)
Thank you again for the ask, hope youâre doing well out there! đ§Ą
An exception.
That was one thing to call this.
âYou promise not to slip up and call me Linda?â
An exceptionâfor youâwas settling for well whiskey when your preferred bottle is tapped out at the bar.
âEhhâŚâ Viktor teases. Covers your cheek down your neck in small kisses. Smiles against your skin as he does. âProbablyâŚâ
An exception was working 12 hours when you realistically had the energy for 8.
âProbably?â
An exception was notâŚ
âI donât like to talk with my mouth full.â
âŚJanna fucking Christ.

Between the Shadow and the Soul
Chapter 11
5/26/22- turns out I accidentally deleted it lol
Cw: racism, slutshaming, mentions of death
Gif by @nofckingfightinging
"You turned cloak so many times in that war, I wonder if your husband knows how cheap your loyalty is.â he says as if heâs caught her, but even if he spent his life trying to find Tommy's weakness, he wouldnât find it with her.Â
Eva knew he would follow her there. A park bench while she reads a book about poetry. People used to give her looks, some good some bad, but it was those types of looks that reminded you where the Americans got their racism. But that changed when Tommy noticed her, everyone feared him and it was in their best interest that Eva Shelby, nee Smith, was treated as if her skin was as pale as her husbandâs.Â
Irene O'Donnell eyed her with intrigue while Donnal Henry eyed her like she was dog shit on his boot. Campbell looks at her like she was put on this earth to make his life miserable.Â
âI was a spy for the rebels, sir, a much better one than Grace seeing I fooled everyone into thinking that. Do you know how easy it was for me to expose her?â Eva loathes Grace, not only because somehow the insipid little cunt managed to creep in like the snake she is, but also because she was just so fucking awful at her job. Had she been a spy in Mexico she wouldnât have lasted ten minutes. "Two conversations with her and your god-awful idea to meet in the cemetery where everyone can see you, and by the next day I had told Polly and Thomas what Iâd seen.âÂ
Eva hates ineptitude just as much as she hates the idea of sharing her husband.Â
âShe served her purpose well enough.â He said angry that a foreign witch was the one who helped Thomas Shelby evade justice.Â
âDid you know I was given a gray filly just like the one my husband bought recently for my services by Pancho Villa?â Eva is not one to brag about her time in Villaâs army ---after its inglorious end who can really--- but Campbell is an exception. Its burns him that a twenty-six-year-old housewife has done more for her country than he has for his. Although an Irishman on the side of his peopleâs oppressors must have no pride. âYou see I sounded so American by the time I finished boarding school, no one could tell I was from Mexico. Except for my coloring, obviously.âÂ
âAnd then killed when you refused to give up your chastity to the general you served, an admirable thing, you were a girl of twenty all alone.â he says as if the majority of Mexico wasnât composed of Catholics.Â
âShame Grace couldnât keep her legs closed, not a very good Protestant girl, was she? Should have seen how eager she was to jump in his bed, all of Small Heath knew she was whore by then, flirting with both Arthur and Thomas.â Although who could blame Grace, Tommy was great in bed ---if a little tame. Linda seemed to be really enjoying Arthurâs bed, going by her blushes, even if she has to step into the Sodom and Gomorrah that is the Eden Club.Â
âThis isnât about Mrs. Macmillian, Mrs. Shelby.â Normally Eva is above calling women sluts and whores for having sex, but it hurts Campbell to have Grace be slandered so.Â
âYou know Iâve seen your death in the cards, let's just say if you thought being shot by a woman was embarrassing, imagine being killed by one.â Eva never plans on letting him get to the point, she could talk the ears off a person if she set her mind to it.Â
âAre you threatening me, Mrs. Shelby?â he says tensing and Eva simply shrugs.Â
âNo, I donât need to threaten people, I simply tell them what the Universe has said to me, you see, Major, I am a witch cursed to see the future.â her voice is barely above a whisper, low and sweet like poison made with honey. âThink of me as Cassandra of Troy, cursed with prophecies that will never be believed.âÂ
----
âYou can hardly tell youâre pregnant, you know. I was like that with Danny.â Esme says when Eva comes in through the betting shop, it was much faster than using the other door. Daniel Owen Shelby was Esmeâs boy, named after Danny Whizz-Bang. He was Johnâs fifth child, but Esmeâs first and only child. âI hope I can have a pregnancy as good as yours was. Iâm sacred of dying like my sister or the baby dying, but it's stupid because the universe has shown me this little one will have three younger sisters.â Eva touches her stomach as if to assure herself that she wonât die like Felicidad did. Â
âIf Tommy is anything like John, those girls of yours will be spoiled rotten. He already bought Katie earrings because he didnât want her to feel left out when he got Daisy some for her birthday.â Esme says with a laugh. If youâd look at her with Katie, Johnny, Daisy and Robbie youâd think sheâd birthed them with how much they loved her and she loved them. Even Daisy who was thinking herself grown at ten and would be unbearable in her teenage years.Â
âI just know he will.â Eva gets the sudden feeling of someone walking up to the betting shop, a woman sheâs heard about, but has never met. âIâll get the door; I think we are about to have an unexpected guest.âÂ
May Carleton was beautiful, in that English heiress type of way. Stunning woman really and ironically both Eva and Tommyâs type. If Eva wasnât married, sheâd definitely try and see if she could get anywhere with her. âI have an appointment with Mr. Thomas Shelby.âÂ
No hello, no may I come in, nothing is even politely asked and she enters in a way Eva can only describe as Hernan Cortes entering Tenochtitlan already planning how heâs going to oust Moctezuma.Â
âMay Carleton,â May extends her hand to Eva, but Eva eyes it with suspicion. Tommy had told her about her flirting with him ---unfortunately he played dumb when she asked about Graceâs letters, so thatâs going to end badly--- and the way she came in here like a colonizer feels a little insulting.Â
âHe usually takes appointments at his proper office.â Eva says wondering how to politely kick her out. She can bet Moctezuma had similar thoughts on how to shake off the Spanish.Â
âThis was the address he gave me.â May drops her hand, feeling the sting. Eva was being rude, but why the hell May Carleton think anyone would be nice to her here. Â
âHe gave you this address?â Esme asks standing by Eva in what can only be seen as solidarity.Â
âHe said this was a gambling den. I told him I wanted to see one since Iâm always reading about them in the papers.â now it made sense. Bored rich girl, Eva hated those. Always tried to make her their pet project, always stealing someone elseâs boyfriend for shits and giggles and always treating the working class like this circus oddity they can pay to see. âQuite the big scandal in the Telegraph lately. Anyway, he said, I could, uhm, take a look.âÂ
Esme looks at May with incredulity and Eva has that try me bitch look she perfected when she was sixteen and Oneida Villareal Diaz tried to make her life a living hell. Probably likes tonic water too.Â
Eva already hates her and it's not even about May setting her sights on her charming criminal of a husband.Â
âAnd now I feel like a bit of an idiot, because Iâm early and heâs late and I have no idea how to behave.â she says almost nervously.Â
âIn a Gambling Den?â Esme doesnât take kindly to being a spectacle for a rich white woman to enjoy.Â
âI'll go wait in the car.â May has the decency to appear apologetic, not that it would save her. The Lees are famous for their resentment.Â
âOh, you donât have to. Heâll be here in maybe five minutes; he is very punctual. I am Eva Shelby.â this time Eva offers her hand. The Mexican Spanish accent feels more pronounced and Eva isnât sure if she should have done that on purpose. With Oneida and her posse of rich mean girls, it was the opposite. The more Irish she sounded the better. Remind them, she was the foreign European one. Didnât help she was darker than them, which was why they always thought her beneath them. All that culminated with Eva âaccidentallyâ pushing Oneida down a few steps so sheâd hurt her ankle and Eva would be playing both Odette and Odile in their schoolâs rendition of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. She hates Swan Lake, but boy does she love revenge.Â
âSo, what brings you here, Miss Carleton?" Eva asks in that sweet polite manner of hers that she uses on strangers.Â
âI am going to train his racehorse, for Epsom.â she says still taking everything in, reminding Eva about how Oneida looked at the offices by the port and how surprised she was to see how well off the Smith Rileys lived. After all they did benefit from the Porfiriato up until the Americans destroyed their ships.Â
âYou know horses?â Esme asks as if she didnât believe posh Miss Carelton was a horse trainer.Â
âYes, you?â May asks and now Eva wonders if she judged May wrong.Â
âBorn riding. Slept in a manger when I was a baby.â Esme answers, a softness about her face when she recalls her childhood.Â
John comes in, complaining about Mayâs car. And Tommy comes in just as John assumes Eva is feeling threatened by the beautiful heiress.Â
âSorry Iâm late,â he clears his throat and John backs down. âThere was a business matter.â he doesnât kiss Evaâs cheek like he always does and that just annoys her more. He orders for Esme and John to keep the place locked for a while and Eva wonders if she is supposed to cockblock them to prevent May Carleton from getting the idea Tommy is unattached, or leave in a huff before she does something immature like trip her. She trusts her husband, but she doesnât trust Carelton to keep Carelton to keep her lily-white hands off her man.Â
âYou hate her, donât you?â he asks knowing the answer to his question. Lucky for Eva they have the house for themselves since Finn likes spending the night at Pollyâs because he misses her and Arthur has gotten a place in London above the Eden Club.Â
âI donât know her enough to hate her, but the impression she has given me leaves her in the same spot as the girls who made my life hell in boarding school. Walked into the betting shop like a fucking colonizer.â Eva groaned and he laughs at her choice of words. She may be more Irish than Nahua, but she was raised to know colonialism is evil and how it looks. Every foreign country owned and enslaved mexicans with their factories in Mexico. âDid she drink Tonic Water? The bitchy rich girls always drank that.âÂ
âYou drink it too, love.â he points out and once again Eva finds herself forgetting sheâs a little angry at him. Here acting like everything is fine while cleaning up after dinner. Him being playful with her and reminding her how horny pregnancy has made her.Â
âDonât do that.â she says reminding herself it's now or never.Â
âDo what, Evie?â he asks bracing himself for the inevitable fight they are hurdling to.Â
âThat thing you do where you make me forget that I am actually pretty fucking mad at you, Tommy.â she says angrily. âI know about those letters Grace has written to you and to top it all off, you didnât even bother correcting Carleton when she assumed you were unmarried today.â Â
If Tommy thought her pretty when she was mad, sheâd look fucking gorgeous tonight.Â

Notes:
happy new years, i was bored in my room and wrote this all in one sitting, yay!
First things first, only Katie, who I assume is the younger daughter since she is still peeing the bed in season 1, is named. I gave them names here. In order they are: Daisy, Robert (robbie), John Jr (Johnny) and Katie. the baby Esme had between seasons is named Daniel Owen after Danny Whizz Bang who gets killed by Billy Kimber in season 1.
May Carleton gave me bitchy rich girl vibes at first, didn't dislike her as much as i dislike Grace ---who I just think sucks as a charcter, spy , but excels as a ghost--- or Tatiana ---who is just an awful person and kinda annoying.
The Porfiriato is the title given to the thirty-one years (seven presidential terms)President Porfirio Diaz was in power in Mexico. guy started out sort of good, but became a tyrant who favored foreign investments, industrailism without care about people's rights and literally killed his oppnents. his regime lead to the Second Revolution that kinda ended up almost exactly the same. The US originally backed the rebels until the Rebels started raiding them because they were still pissed about the US orchestrating the Mexican-American War to steal half of what is now the continetnial US. the 2nd revolution would make a fantasitic m-rated period drama, has a lot of violence, back stabbing, politics and at one point 41 queer men were exsposed at a dance (there's a movie called El Baile de los 41/the Dance of the 41) one of them being Diaz's son-in-law.

College Headcanons: Modern!Peaky Blinders Edition
Part 1 | Part 2
A/N: This came to me in a dream. Enjoy.Â
Thomas Shelby:
Double Major: Political Science and Business Management (bc he likes to work himself to death) Minor: Military Sciences/ROTC
Likes debating and trying to outsmart the professor.
Often seen on campus with bloody knuckles from rocking someoneâs jaw.
Would 100% punch a motherfucker for being mean to someone he cares about.
Doesnât need to be in a fraternity to be known around campus, just donât mess with him and youâll be fine.
All the girls whisper as he walks by but he donât give a fuck cuz he has to go to his lectures.
Heâs on time for every class and pulls out his pocket watch if the professor is more than 5 minutes late. If the professor canât bother showing up then he dips out.
Almost got suspended for one too many fist fights.
Has a âthingâ for the barista at the campus Starbucks. He learned after frequent visits, that her name was Grace and that she liked black coffee just like him.
Mysterious and moody af. No one knows if theyâve ever seen him smile, except when chatting up Grace.
Tries his best to study, but ends up getting dragged into his siblings shenanigans or into his head about the family business.
Keeps to himself for the most part, except for having a few close friends.
Hates technology so he uses a typewriter and prefers receiving letters/mail over emails.
Canât figure out how to use Grace the baristas phone when typing in his number and tells her to write it down instead.
Often tells her to meet him after her shift. đ
Professors hate him because of his reliance on paper. Totes not eco-friendly but he doesnât care. Tommy always gets his way.
Grace always gives him a cookie for free cuz she knows he forgets to eat.
Always seen smoking or sneaking drinks of whiskey in a flask, even at 7am lectures.
Binge drinks on weekends with his bros, and drunk calls barista Grace when he has maybe 3 working brain cells left for the night. On other weekends when heâs coherent, he meets with Polly and tries to discuss business plans since their dad dipped out like a bitch.
To make matters worse, after dating for a while, Grace just leaves him. He thinks his aunt Polly may have been too hard on her, but he didnât know until later that she lied when she said she didnât know about the business. But barista bitch knew everything, and was gonna expose them to her higher-ups in the criminal justice department before long.
Arthur Shelby:
Major: Agriculture Minor: Military Science/ROTC
Graduated just barely.
Ended up in some trouble with his peeps in the military science department, probs for cussing someone out.
Angry, loud, and emotional af.
Loved drinking with John and his frat boy friends.
No one messed with him if they valued their life.
Started one too many fights and got suspended for reals. Almost beat a man to death but we donât talk about that.
He gets stressed really easily so in his free time he draws horses.
When he gets real mad he takes it to the campus boxing ring and punches to his hearts content.
On his way back to his dorm one night he saw a girl who was in his agriculture class. She was cute and also in a âChristianâ ministry group on campus. He decided to chat her up when she was preaching, just to see what it was about.
They later dated but then she cheated around with a fellow churchy man and just went off the rails. When he found out it wasnât pretty.
Her friends and pastor most likely shamed her cuz she be â¨sinningâ¨. Therefore not helping her mental state.
Her name was Linda. Never trust a Linda.
Everyone tried to console Arthur but only boxing and drinking at Johns frat house did the trick.
Tommy often had to run to his dorm in the middle of the night to talk him out his mental breakdowns. College is hard.
In the end, he was glad he did agriculture even if his crazy ex would constantly stare at him during lectures, probably plotting his demise.
Some days heâd take out his frustrations by chopping wood and helping out on the farm where he worked and studied most days.
But you bet your ass fuckinâ Linda showed up to his dorm one time though with a gun and tried to shoot him, but she didnât know his brothers and aunt were there too. Polly may have shot her in the arm tho. But when the campus PD showed up shit really went down.
We donât know where Linda is now, but thatâs probs for the best.
John Shelby:
Major: Music (idk I felt like heâs a musical boi) Minor: Military Science/ROTC
Heâs a frat boy through and through. He drops it low on the dance floor and is known to dive onto beer pong tables.
Constantly going to parties and hooking up with sorority girls, that is until he meets a girl named Esme whoâd been dragged to the party by her friends.
Suddenly he ainât no hoe no more, heâs head over boots in love with her and she loves him too.
They be sneaking around in various buildings, often having to make a run for it to escape security.
Heâd play her songs after hard training days with his military buds cuz it helps him calm down.
Heâs not as violent as his older brothers, but heâll fuck a person up if needed.
His fraternity is the second most important thing to him besides his girl. He loves the energy of the fraternity, the partying, and acting a whole fool with his friends, but Esme has him whipped.
His studies are struggling though cuz he loves to get turnt. He hates the studying aspect of college.
Always getting his brothers into trouble.
Snorts coke off Esmeâs tits on occasion at the frat parties. Itâs a wild time.
Has the mouth of a sailor but a heart of gold.
Talks of kids with Esme after dating for a year. Canât afford a ring yet tho, but their bud Jeremiah marries them anyway on a whim.
After Arthur and the Grace fiasco ensues, he drops out of college because Esme falls pregnant. In the end, she ends up getting the chickens and wild cottage!core house sheâd always wanted. They both decide to raise their kids there, living their best lives until Tommy drags them into more family matters later on.
Ada Shelby:
Major: English Minor: Gender & Womenâs Studies
Always seen in the most stylish clothes.
Sheâs quiet most times but can be very knowledgeable on various subjects.
Sheâs constantly going off on her older brothers and trying to smack some sense into them.
Feels like something is off with the barista Tommyâs been seeing, but itâs not her problem.
Can 100% find her chilling in the back of Starbucks reading old novels or writing literature reviews.
When sheâs not there, sheâs holed up in the library where she works part time, studying and practicing for debates.
10/10 would fuck in the library cuz she knows all the best secret places to go to. đ
Organizes meetings with different campus associations and demands equality for students.
Spends her free time surfing the net for clothes or keeping an eye out for a potential new bae.
Is probably the best at studying. She earns the best grades letâs be honest.
Will not hesitate to call a bitch out. She may not throw hands but sheâll throw words that can cut you like a knife.
Works for the campus paper, spilling all the tea on campus life. Her brothers often reluctantly agree to be her mock interview subjects for a range of assignments.
She breaks necks when walking around campus, everyone moves out of their way for her.
Sheâs a bad bitch.
Finn Shelby:
Major: Photography Minor: English
He hates how violent his brothers are but would 10/10 back them up if needed.
Often asks Ada for advice on studying and girls.
Doesnât like the frat boy scene like John, but goes to the parties anyways with his best friends Isiah and Bonnie.
Heâs a freshman and you can tell. He still has a glimmer of life in his eyes and a pep in his step as he walks around campus.
When heâs not taking pictures for class, heâs taking pictures of his girlfriend.
Sheâs his muse even when doing the simplest of things like sitting in a chair or reading one of his English books.
Each week heâd surprise her with a picture he took when she wasnât looking, telling her how beautiful she is.
He may not look strong, but after many nights at the boxing ring with Arthur, he knew how to throw a punch.
He almost flunked his studies a couple times, getting too caught up in partying or being with his girl, but Ada and his Aunt Polly set him straight.
Voted by his family as most likely to not get arrested or suspended from college.
Heâd have deep conversations with his friends, often confusing them because it was just that deep.
In his spare time heâd go boxing with Arthur or would try to help Tommy with his essays, but Tommy would get frustrated and tell him to fuck off within the first 10 minutes.
Polly Gray:
Profession: Business Management Professor Side Job: Managing the blinder business with Tommy
When sheâs not teaching class, sheâs managing the blinder business that was left to her and Tommy to tackle. This also means covering up any suspicions that arise on campus. She has her hands full.
Sheâs Tommyâs only shred of common sense some days when he gets too stressed out from his 10,000 majors and minors, or wants to plan to overthrow the university.
Will not hesitate to slap someone, preferably her unruly nephews.
Anyone can lie to her but the truth always falls through the cracks, and when she finds out, youâd pray you faced the devil instead.
In her spare time she reads tea leaves and prays for the corrupt souls of her son and his cousins. She really just begs to god that they can come together for once to get the business in line, but even that may be asking too much.
Knows a snake when she sees one. *cough* *cough* Grace the barista.
Sheâs the first one to tell someone I told ya so, especially her students when they flunk her tests because they decided to get drunk the night before.
When sheâs not yelling at her nephews or grading papers, she can be seen at the local bar chatting up coworkers and old flames, hoping to find âthe oneâ eventually. She ends up having a âthingâ for the quirky Philosophy professor though. Heâs kind of shady cuz she finds out heâs in a similar business on the side, but it only makes her like him more. She craves the danger.
They later end up in a whirlwind romance similar to John and Esme, and everyone loves that for them.
She can also be seen with her head in her hands when trying to persuade Tommy to use technology.
âWhat is copy and paste Pol? Canât I just write it down? Whatâs up with all these gadgets aye?â
âIf you want your hand to fall off and to make me lose my mind, then yes, write it down. Grading is bloody hard enough as it is, let alone grading your papers. Youâre just like your father ya know, always doing things the hard way.â
Tells Gina off when she gets the chance just like she did Grace. She didnât shoot her like Linda though, she just hurt some feelings.
May have aided in Graceâs âsuddenâ departureâŚmaybeâŚjust a little bit.
Secretly ships Tommy with a woman named Lizzie who had been her assistant at her office. She knew she could trust her more, at least.
Despite her harshness, sheâs just trying to keep her family from completely fucking up their lives.
Michael Gray:
Major: Accounting Minor: Business Management
Like Tommy, he doesnât get the hype of fraternities so he just hangs out with his cousins or his small circle of friends, they arenât saints though.
His mom, Polly is his business management professor. She always calls on him and gives him a hard time when he spaces out in class.
Is often seen around campus with a few friends or his girlfriend Gina who he met in business class. Theyâre sickening and it was like a whirlwind romance tbh.
He usually finds himself cleaning up his cousinâs messes when it comes to fighting, but if he has to throw some punches he will.
Heâs not as impulsive when it comes to matters of business, but where matters of the heart are concerned thatâs another story.
When the blinders and Polly were all at her house for dinner one night he announced he was going to marry Gina. Arthur and John laughed and Tommy smirked slightly, still butt-hurt after his Grace left him for little-to-no reason. Ada grinned and bared the news whilst Polly nearly smacked him on the head.
People didnât dare mess with him, and that went for all his cousins as well.
He spent a majority of his days in class crunching numbers, and most his nights out with the boys getting drunk or fuckinâ with Gina.
Because his mom held him accountable, his grades rivaled Adaâs causing them to get into some friendly competition at times.
Heâs cunning like Tommy though. He got into many a screaming match with the older blinder after trying to take over his position in the family business. It ended in some black eyes and Polly smacking both of them with her newspaper. He knew better than to mess with the devil himself.
Despite the tensions between the cousins at times, heâs always the one they go to when they canât figure out their math homework, and heâd always have to meet one of them in the library at 3 am to smuggle in some cocaine and a drink to keep them studying.

making the most of it
Author: @realtruesuccessor For: @yagami-raito-kun Pairings/Characters: Near | Nate River/Yagami Light, background Linda/Matsuda, Near | Nate River, Yagami Light, Linda (Death Note), Matsuda Touta, Watari Rating/Warnings: Teen and Up Audiences, No Archive Warnings Apply, just typical superhero/action movie stuff Prompt:Â Near is a superhero, Light is a supervillain, they get set up on a blind double date and have to roll with it to protect their secret identities Authorâs notes: This was super fun to write! Thank you for the amazing prompt! I hope this is what you were looking for, and that you enjoy it!
--------------
Nate River had never given much thought to the idea of romance. He had experienced fleeting crushes in the past, but never any serious feelings, and he had never even been kissed at the ripe old age of eighteen. There were much more pressing issues in his life besides the lack of social milestones, so Nate wasnât too concerned about his deficits in romantic experience.Â
Unfortunately, his roommate Linda did not have the same opinion.Â
âYouâre going to die alone if you keep this up.â
Nate looked up from the small toy robot that had been occupying his attention before Linda opened her mouth. âYouâll have to be more specific.â
Linda sighed, crossing her arms over her chest. âIâve never seen you go on a date,â she said, as if that clarified anything.Â
 âSo?â
âSo, youâll end up alone and unhappy unless you find yourself a nice man.â
Nate raised an eyebrow, and he lifted his hand to curl a finger around a strand of wavy white hair. âYouâre making an awful lot of bold assumptions.â
 âAm I wrong?â
Nate paused, took a moment to consider the brief crushes he had in the past, and then admitted a small concession. âNot about my preference for men, but about my impending lonely fate? That remains to be seen.â
Linda approached Nateâs spot on the floor, where he was surrounded by tiny action figures. She sat down next to him, and picked up a small gray object from the circle of toys around him. âIâm worried about you, Nate,â she explained. âYouâre always holed up in your room, messing around with these toys, but I think you should get out more and I have the perfect idea to help with that.â
Eyeing the object in her hand, Nate uncurled his finger from his hair. He reached over and plucked the tiny gray circle from her grasp, then stuffed the item into his pocket. âYour concern is noted,â he said, perhaps a bit too sharp. âUnfortunately for you, I disagree.â
âCan you hear me out, at least?âÂ
âYouâve given me no compelling reason to do that, so the answer is no. Please leave me alone.â
Silence rang throughout the apartment, echoing with the sting of Lindaâs hurt feelings. Nate didnât feel sorry in the least; in fact, he felt entirely justified. After all, Linda had barged into his room and insulted his lifestyle. He was in the right to be short and snappy with her.
Nate watched impassively as Lindaâs face fell. His roommateâs usually bright smile turned into a sullen frown, and her blue eyes became downcast. If Nate had been a different sort of person, he might have been moved by this display, but as it was, Lindaâs wounded emotions did nothing to stir his heart or change his mind.Â
âWell, thatâs disappointing,â Linda muttered, her voice small and hurt.
âI have no idea why youâre suddenly so invested in my romantic life, but whatever your reasons, you brought this on yourself by disparaging my hobbies.â
âOkay, okay, I guess youâre right. I should have gone about this in a different way.â
âYes, you should have, but thereâs no changing the past and no use lingering on this topic anymore. Werenât you leaving?â
With a heavy sigh, Linda got up and left Nate to his own devices.
 ~
The city was dark at night, lit only by the occasional street lamp.
âWhere is the tracker now, Watari?â
Near made his way through the gloomy city streets, dodging the warm circles of light cast by the lampposts. He stuck to dark, shadowy corners like glue, crouching behind parked cars and navigating narrow alleyways.Â
A voice crackled over the communication device in Nearâs ear. âOne block away, Near,â Watari said. âThe location is pinging from that abandoned grocery store on the corner.â
As Near approached the store, he tugged his dark cowl down over his hair and eyes, shielding them from view. The streets were mostly empty, but he didnât want to risk being identified, even by the vagrants who frequented this part of the city in the dead of night. After all, his white hair and gray eyes were rather distinctive. If Near ever let his guard down, it wouldnât take a genius to eventually trace the actions of the vigilante Near back to the identity of one Nate River.
âAlright, Iâm standing in front of the store now.â
âYes, thank you. The tracker you placed on that nasty fellow is still pinging from inside that building.â
âHmm, I really do hope this doesnât end in physical violence. You know how much I hate fighting.â
âIâm aware of that, and I also know that youâve had a very long night already, but at least Lidner will be pleased to hear that you were finally able to put some of her training to good use.â
Near made a face. His mouth twisted into a displeased frown. âThatâs not funny.â
âI wasnât trying to be funny, Iâm being completely serious. Sheâll love to hear that you fought off a villain with a stick.â
âFirst of all, this isnât exactly a stick. Itâs a bĹ,â Near corrected. âSecond of all, perhaps youâre correct. She seems to puff up with pride whenever I acknowledge her skills.â
âYes, people tend to do that when you pay them a compliment.â
Ignoring Watariâs snark, Near began the task of sneaking into the dark building. He crept forward, towards the front of the store, keeping low to the ground. There wasnât any light coming from the windows or the door, but Near had learned from experience that one could never be too careful when dealing with villains. The building seemed lifeless and empty from the outside, but there could be traps set inside - or even the villain himself, tracker and all. So, Near was sure to be stealthy as he peeked into the store from a low, dirty window.
The interior of the old shop seemed to be exactly what Near had expected. Mostly empty, save for a few shelves, and thick layers of dust covering every visible surface. Clearly, the store hadnât been active in many years. It was the perfect place for squatters to take refuge - or for mysterious villains to set up a hideout.Â
âBest entrance route?â Near asked, eyeing the door in the corner of the shop, which appeared to lead somewhere deeper into the building. If Near had to guess, he would say that the door probably led to some sort of old office or employee break room. The door was dark and heavy-looking, with a shiny silver knob that could have easily been rigged with a villainous trap.Â
âYou mean, besides walking right through the front door?â Watari teased.
 âWatari, please, this is serious.â
âAlright, alright, I understand, Iâm searching for an aerial view now.â
As Near waited for Watariâs next message, he took another look around the interior of the store. None of the dust seemed to be disturbed; the floor and the shelves all appeared to be completely untouched by human feet or hands, at least for the past few months.Â
Still, Near considered, the room could be monitored with hidden cameras and microphones. Best that I donât use the main entrance unless thereâs no other option.
âAccording to the aerial view, thereâs a skylight towards the back of the building,â Watari announced.Â
Near frowned, and reached up to rub a strand of his own white hair between two fingers. âI donât see a skylight from my current location, so the skylight must lead into the back room of the store. I can skip the main shop area entirely.â
 âWell, that works out nicely.â
About fifteen minutes later, Near found himself on top of the roof, breathing heavily from exertion. âIâm never doing that again,â he managed in between gulps of air.Â
 âNever say never, Near.â
After catching his breath, Near approached the skylight and peered through it. The bright moon illuminated the room beneath the glass, casting everything in a soft white glow. Through the skylight, Near could see the back room of the shop, which appeared mostly empty, save for a wooden desk.Â
âIâm entering the building now,â Near said, reaching to unlatch the skylight.
âWait, Near!â Watari cried out, at the exact same time an unfamiliar voice whispered: âI wouldnât do that if I were you.â
Near whipped around, bringing up his bŠstaff in a fluid motion.
A masked man stood before Near, with his gloved hands raised in mock surrender.Â
âWho are you?â Near asked, his tone dark and serious.Â
The man smirked, then nodded to one of his hands. A familiar, small gray object rested between the fingers of his red leather-covered hand.Â
 The tracker.
âShit,â Near muttered under his breath.
âLooking for this?â The man asked, sounding carefree and quite pleased with himself. His voice was slightly deeper than Near had imagined, but it suited him just the same.
On impulse, Near jabbed at the mysterious villain with his staff.
As though he moved through the shadows, the man expertly evaded Nearâs attack. He dodged, twisted, and kicked out. His dark boot landed in the center of Nearâs chest, pushing the hero back.Â
Near stumbled back, tripping over his own feet. His ankle hit something behind him, probably a ledge of some kind, and suddenly, he was falling. He felt a sinking feeling in his stomach as the world warped around him.Â
Like something out of a movie, Near found himself falling in slow motion - legs bending, glass cracking from somewhere behind him, his body descending further and further into darkness.Â
Before Near could even process what was happening, the villain turned away. His silhouette was illuminated by the bright backdrop of the moon. He glanced over his shoulder as Near fell through the skylight. His brown eyes sparkled with the dual flickers of triumph and pride.
The villainâs smug grin was the last thing Near saw before darkness enveloped him completely.Â
 ~
âI canât believe you finally roped me into this nonsense,â Nate River said.Â
Linda and Nate sat on a bench together, as the sky darkened and the air became thin and cold. She wore a coat and a light scarf over her dress, while he was dressed in only a collared button-up shirt and comfortable pants. The bright yellow bulbs from the nearby carnival casted the two roommates in a soft glow. Despite the warm light, Nate shivered, and Linda looked around frantically; her foot was tapping incessantly against the hard concrete of the sidewalk.Â
âYes, well, this nonsense is going to do wonders for your social life, if those silly boys ever show up,â Linda said, glancing down at her phone with a frown.Â
Nate rolled his eyes. âFirst of all, my social life is perfectly satisfying as it is, thank you very much. Second of all, Iâm sure theyâll be here any minute now.â
âI guess youâre right about that second thing,â Linda conceded, pointing towards a pair of young Japanese men who were quickly approaching their bench. âAnd weâve already been over the first thing.â
The two men arrived at their bench, and Nate got a good look at both of them for the first time. One of the men, whom Linda greeted as âMatsudaâ, had dark hair and big brown eyes that suited his handsome face and gentle expression. The other man was introduced as Light Yagami, a close friend of Matsudaâs and a fellow Japanese exchange student. Lightâs hair was significantly lighter than Matsudaâs, and although his eyes were a similar shade of brown, his gaze spoke of a sharp intelligence that far exceeded his bumbling friend.
 Nate knew those eyes.
That attractive pair of brown eyes had smirked at him, only a few nights ago, on a moon-drenched rooftop.
âLight Yagami, was it?â Nate clarified, his eyes traveling over every inch of Lightâs pretty face. âItâs a pleasure to meet you.â
After a beat, Light smiled at Nate. His smile was polite, but had an air of deceptive falseness about it. There was something lurking underneath the surface of that mask - some dark and dangerous secret that only Nate could truly see.Â
âItâs a pleasure to see you too, Nate,â Light said. His voice was familiar to Nate, just as deep and attractive as Nate remembered.
Unlike Matsuda, Light spoke English with a near-perfect American accent.Â
As Linda pulled Matsuda towards the carnival, Nate fell into step beside Light. The pair of them walked in silence for a bit, each of them calmly observing their surroundings. Nate noticed that the lights from the carnival complimented Lightâs warm brown hair very well; his pretty locks seemed almost golden under the electric buzz of the soft outdoor string lights. Not even Lindaâs incessant babbling could distract Nate from his careful observation of Light Yagamiâs lustrous hair.
Suddenly, Light tore his gaze away from a crowd of people near the food vendors. As the group he had been watching moved on, Light turned his head to face Nate and looked at him - truly looked at him - for the first time.Â
âAre you cold, Nate?â Light asked, glancing down at Nateâs chest.Â
Nate could see that Lightâs preppy jacket protected him from the slight chill of the night air. After all, Light wasnât shivering at all, whereas Nate couldnât help but tremble at the brush of a breeze against his pale skin. He really, really couldnât help it - he had always been sensitive to temperature changes, ever since he was a young child. It wasnât a particularly debilitating condition, but it could sometimes be annoying.Â
 Such as, right now.
Nateâs brain was suddenly filled with images of Light offering him his jacket, like a scene straight out of a cheesy romance movie from the 1980s.Â
âNo,â Nate said, like a liar. âIâm not cold.â
âIf you insist. In that case, perhaps youâre simply eager for this double date to be over with, so you can go home?â
Nate raised an eyebrow, suddenly very thankful that Linda and Matsuda had moved out of earshot. âThatâs awfully observant of you.â
Light shook his head, and a small smile crept onto his face. âNo, Iâm just projecting a bit, I think.â
âAh, I see. So, you donât want to be here either.â
âThatâs correct. Matsuda wanted me to come along though, and I had no good reason to say no. If I had alternate plans, trust me, I wouldnât be anywhere near this place.â
âYou couldnât have said that you were studying, or something like that?â
Once again, Light shook his head. He glared at a flimsy-looking carnival ride. âMatsuda is my roommate, and one of my oldest friends from back home in Japan. We also share many classes together, and he knows my schedule almost as well as he knows his own. He knows I donât have any exams or major assignments coming up anytime soon.â
âHmm, I see, that must be difficult.â
 Light nodded.Â
A moment of awkward silence stretched between them, before Light broke the silence with a question.
âAnd what about you, Nate? Why are you really here, if youâre not actually interested in dating?â
âSimilarly to yourself, I was compelled by my roommate to attend this little meeting. She made it clear that Mr. Matsuda wanted to go on a date with her, but he insisted on a double date, and so she needed me to step in and serve that role.â
âThat makes sense,â Light said, a smirk tugging at his lips. âMatsuda has always been anxious about romance and relationships with women, so he thought more company might take the edge off of his nervousness.â
Nate glanced over at Linda and Matsuda, who were standing a few booths away, at one of the carnival games. Through the crowd of happy fairgoers, Nate could clearly see the wide smile on Lindaâs face. Matsuda said something to her, and she threw her head back and laughed with abandon. Nate recalled Lindaâs pleading face from earlier, when she had practically begged Nate to go on the date with her, and her appearance now was certainly a stark contrast to that face.
Unable to stop the small smile from creeping onto his face, Nate turned away from Light. âWell, they seem to be having fun, so I suppose this night isnât a complete waste of time.â
Light nodded, eyeing one of the nearby game booths. âPerhaps we can have some fun as well?â He asked, gesturing to the booth.
âYou canât be serious. I thought you didnât want to be here.â
âTrue, Iâd love to just go home right now, but I canât without letting my roommate down, so I might as well make the most of this night, right?â
âI suppose you have a point.â
With that, Nate and Light approached the game booth.
Ten minutes later, Nate was holding a giant fluffy white bunny - a stuffed animal that Light had won at the silly dart game.Â
Nate frowned, staring down at the offending rabbit. âYouâre better than me at darts,â he grumbled.
Light chuckled. âNo, I think I just got lucky,â he said, looking at Nate with a curious expression on his face. âRegardless, I hope you like it. Are you going to give it a name?â
âYes, as a matter of fact, I am,â Nate said. He stared at Lightâs face, observing the other man with a careful attention to detail. âHis name is Kira.â
There was a beat of silence.
âOh? You figured that out rather quickly, didnât you?âÂ
Nate nodded, then glanced away. Lightâs expression and words told him everything that he needed to know.
âAnd? What are you going to do with Kira, now that you have him?â Light asked, his voice laced with double meaning.
Scoffing, Nate hugged the bunny closer to his chest, and continued to avoid Lightâs gaze. âIâll turn him over to the proper authorities, of course.â
It was Lightâs turn to scoff. âYou wonât do that.â
 âWhy not?â
âBecause Kira is helping society, and also, youâre wildly attracted to me.â
Nate almost dropped the stuffed rabbit. He turned towards Light, and a soft pink blush spread across his cheeks. His eyes went wide.
âKira kills people,â Nate managed, cursing himself.
âOnly rotten people,â Light corrected. âThis world is rotten, but Kira is making it better, so good people can live happy and peaceful lives.â
Nate shook his head. âMurdering a few corrupt politicians and businessmen isnât going to magically make the system just or right. All it does is make Kira a murderer.â
âHmm, well, if Kira is simply a murderer and a villain in your eyes, what about that vigilante? Near, wasnât it?â
 âNear doesnât kill people.â
âYet, the police are still hunting him with the same energy that they use to hunt Kira. Isnât that interesting? I imagine theyâd be grateful to receive any hint of Nearâs true identity, no matter the source of the information.â
 Well, that was a threat.
At that exact moment, Linda rushed up to them, holding a plate full of funnel cake. âCome on, guys, Matsu bought me this cake and I canât eat it all on my own! Share it with me!âÂ
Nate looked from the cake, to Light, and then back to the cake. After a moment of hesitation, he reached up and grabbed a small piece of fried dough from the plate. He held the piece up towards Lightâs lips.Â
âHere,â Nate prompted. âHave you ever tried funnel cake before?â
Lightâs eyes widened, and he stared at Nate in disbelief. âNo, I havenât,â he admitted, shocked and quiet.Â
Nate held the cake up a little closer to Lightâs face, and Light leaned forward slightly, meeting him halfway. When Light took the cake into his mouth, his lips brushed lightly over Nateâs fingers. The lips were warm, and felt almost electric against Nateâs skin. Nate resisted the urge to shiver. Something deep and primal was stirring inside of him, something that he couldnât really place, but certainly didnât feel familiar.Â
Something that made him want to be closer to Light Yagami, despite the knowledge of his dateâs true identity.Â
From that point onwards, the date proceeded normally for the most part. Nate and Light attempted to act naturally around Linda and Matsuda, saving all double-life talk for later. After all, neither of them wanted to duke it out in front of their roommates, or the dozens of other citizens strolling around nearby. So, they made more polite conversation as Linda and Matsuda dragged them around to different booths and rides.
Finally, the night seemed to be reaching an end. Linda and Matsuda had snuck off somewhere, presumably to say goodbye to each other properly before parting ways. Nate and Light were left alone, near an empty patch of grass.Â
An awkward silence hung between them, not for the first time that night. Nate wasnât exactly sure what to say, or if he should say anything at all. He couldnât exactly leave the carnival and go turn Light over to the police - for one, he didnât have any physical or concrete evidence that Light was the villain known as Kira, and perhaps even more concerning, Light had vaguely threatened to out him to the cops if he was ever caught. All of which put Nate in a very uncertain position: he knew the identity of the villain Kira, but wasnât in any position to do anything about it.
Light cleared his throat, which drew Nateâs attention. When Nate glanced over, he saw that Light was staring at him with another odd expression on his face, a look that Nate couldnât really identify.Â
âWhat?â Nate asked, shifting uncomfortably, and clutching the stuffed bunny tighter against his chest.
 âI--â
Whatever Light had begun to say was cut off with a sharp BANG!Â
Nate nearly jumped out of his own skin. His upper body grew very tense, very quickly, and he shuffled closer to Light.Â
On what must have been some kind of protective instinct, Light reached out and put his arm around Nateâs shoulders. âItâs okay,â Light said, suddenly calm and soothing. âItâs just the fireworks.â
âFireworks? Linda didnât say there would be fireworks.â
âMaybe she didnât know? I take it youâre not a fan of loud, sudden noises, huh?â
Nate shook his head. âIâm not a fan of them in the best of times, and these happen to be the worst of times, so you can only imagine how I feel in this moment.â
Light winced, and pulled his arm away. Nate found, quite strangely, that he missed the subtle warmth and pressure of Lightâs hand on his body, even though it had only been there for a short while.
âI want to apologize,â Light said softly, barely audible over the continued explosions from the fireworks.Â
âFor what?â Nate asked, genuinely confused.
âFor your tumble through the skylight. I know you seem to be fine now, but Iâm sure falling through a window and landing on a hard floor hurts like hell at first.â
Nate blinked. âYes, it does. And no, I donât accept your apology, because I donât believe youâre actually sorry for what youâve done, or for what you continue to do.â
Light didnât respond to that, only gazing at Nate in an impressed silence.
Suddenly, Linda and Matsuda reappeared, both of them pink-cheeked and out of breath. Before Nate and Light could say much more to each other, theyâre both pulled away by their respective roommates, pulled apart, and brought home.
 ~
At home, in the quiet and darkness of his room, Nate felt a strange mixture of relief and disappointment.Â
A sudden buzz lit up his phone, and he glanced down without thinking - only to see a text from an unknown number splashed across his screen. He read the message silently, and then smiled softly to himself.Â
Nate knew that he would eventually be the one to bring Light Yagami to justice, regardless of the cost to himself. But he still had to gather evidence to prove his case, and in the meantime, well...why not have some fun and make the most of it?

There is only one for me
You have made that a possibility
We could take that step to see, mm
If this is really gonna be
All you got to do is say yes
On the following Thursday, Iris finds herself rushing down Main St., her glittery gold pumps making a rhythmic clack-clack-clack on the sidewalk. She barely had time to change from what sheâd worn to work, into a long black maxi dress printed with gold feathers all over it. The dress has long sleeves and a modest neckline, though the right side split that rises near to her waist changes what might otherwise just be a pretty casual dress. Sheâs late, which is why sheâs risking a broken neck by running down the street in these shoes, not wanting to hear Wally bitch about being late to his 21st birthday dinner.
She finally gets to the front of Goldenâs, where her dad has rented out space for the dinner and later, some music and dancing. Barry is standing outside of the restaurant, in a pair of well-fitting black pants and camel colored desert boots, tugging at the neck of the white sweater that does only good things for those broad shoulders. He looks up from his phone when he hears her heels, and the smile he gives her pulls her up short.
âHi, beautifulâ he greets as he steps out from where heâd been leaning on the wall. âYou look nice."
Iris waves a hand, still trying to catch her breath. âI look like Iâve been working all day.â
She touches self-consciously at her hair, knowing that the curls from her bantu knots have likely begun to fall. But when she looks up again, the word nice isnât actually what she sees as heâs looking at her. Itâs a misnomer, the word nice, because his gaze follows the curves of her body, the way the dressâs matching tie shows the deep curve of her waist, and how every time she moves, Barry sees one long, brown leg ending in the double straps around her ankle. Iris shifts under his gaze, at his blown irises, the color of them graying by the moment.
âCome here,â he says, reaching out for her.
âWhat? Barry, weâre late,â she attempts to argue, even as sheâs letting him pull her into his arms. She tumbles into them, letting him wrap both his arms around her as she circles hers around his waist. She can feel the warmth of his palms through the thin material of her dress.
âBreathe,â he commands softly, and she inhales deeply before letting it go. Barry loosens his hold, but only enough that he can look into her eyes.
âLetâs try that again,â he teases. âHi, Iris, you look beautiful.â
Her stomach flutters at the comment and she bites down on her bottom lip. âThank you, Barry.â
âHowâs your day been? We havenât talked.â
âBarry, weâreâŚâ
âLate. Yes, I know. And maybe Iâm stalling because Iâm nervous to meet your entire family at your brotherâs party, but I also just wanna check in.â He lifts her chin with a forefinger. âSo howâs your day been?â
She thinks that she fucking melts, just like that.
âItâs been good. Really good,â she replies softly, trying to hold his tender gaze. âI didnât have to curse any undergrads. And I, uh, well,â she hesitates for only a moment, but she wants to tell him this, even if itâs news sheâs been hoarding for the moment. âWell, my blog is going to be featured on Good Morning, Central City.â
His eyes light up. âWhat, Iris? Thatâs amazing!â He wraps his arms around her again and squeezes, even pulling her off of her feet. The sound of her laughter fills the air as she tightens her hold on his neck.
Heâs the first person sheâs told. Sheâd gotten the email after lunch this afternoon, about the morning talk show featuring some of Central Cityâs rising internet stars. Sheâs never considered herself an internet star, especially because her blog focuses primarily on others, with the exception of the occasional personal story, the occasional picture with an update about her life. But theyâre taping the segment in a monthâs time and sheâll have a ten minute spot talking to the hosts and answering questions about What a Life Youâve Lived.
âBaby, Iâm so damn proud of you.â
And he is, which isnât so much startling as it is noteworthy. Because heâs new here, but already heâs been so supportive of her and her work, reading and asking questions all the time. Itâs a rush, really, and she has to hold on to him to steady herself.
âThank you so much, Barry. Itâs exciting and scary and, humbling, in a way.â
âSee,â he says, cupping her cheek in his palm. âGood.â
She sticks her tongue out at him and he takes it as an invitation to kiss her. Itâs a quick kiss, compared to the way he usually kisses her, but he still leaves her light-headed from the taste and the feel of him. She hums when he pulls away, closing her eyes briefly.
âYou ready?â she asks when heâs in her sight again.
âI think I am,â he replies, but she notes that he seems a little dazed too.
âDonât be nervous,â she grins. âYou already know Dad. Youâve met Linda. Youâve likely met Cecile too.â
âYes, but itâs one thing to talk to Captain West and DA Horton for work. Itâs completely different to hang out with them as the man their daughter has been seeing.â
She takes his hand to squeeze once and lets go to run her hand across his chest, picking at invisible lent on his sweater.
âItâll be fine. Just be your weirdly charming self.â
âWeirdly charming?â His eyes widen and he stands up straighter. âHow am I weirdly charming?â
Ignoring his question, she grabs his hand again. âCome on. Weâre really late now.â
âBut IrisâŚ?â
Iris isnât quite sure how she got Barry invited to this dinner. Sheâd gone over to her dadâs for dinner on Sunday, and theyâd been talking about Wallyâs party, securing some last-minute details. Out of the blue, Wally had blurted about Irisâs ânew boyfriend,â though Iris figures it was a calculated move on her brotherâs part. But now theyâre here, walking into Goldenâs hand in hand.
The place has been decorated for the party: white, black, and gold streamers everywhere, a matching balloon arch, a tall matching photo booth set up on one side. The space has been cleared so that there is one long table for the group to sit together (to include their family, Linda and Daniel, Theo and Xuan, and several of Wallyâs friends from college). On the other side of the table is a wide-open space where, in about an hour, a DJ will come set up in the corner and the remaining space will act as a makeshift dance floor.
Wally is sitting in the middle of the table, a black leather crown on his head, matching his black t-shirt and blazer paired with black trousers, a gold chain circling his throat. The color theme for his birthday party is black, white, and gold, and as Iris looks around the room, she sees her family and Wallyâs friends all adhering to the dress code.
âIris,â he shouts when he spots her. âFucking finally.â He immediately glances back at their dad with a low âsorry dad,â before standing to greet her. Iris pulls him in for a hug, wrapping her arms tight around him.
âIâm sorry Iâm late,â she tells him. âHappy birthday, baby.â
âThanks, big sis.â He gives her another big squeeze and then pulls back to kiss her cheek.
Joe West, tall and imposing-looking with deep brown skin and kind eyes, shakes his head at his youngest son and stands to give Iris a hug too.
âGood to see you, pumpkin.â
He looks at Barry, whoâs standing behind her, looking a little bit pink in the face, his eyes wide. She shakes her head in amusement, thinking about how heâs always so damn confident when heâs with her, but heâs looking like he wants to turn and run at the moment.
âCSI Allen,â her dad says, expression unreadable.
Barry swallows. âCaptain West. Itâs, uh, good to see you.â
Thereâs a tense silence for just a moment as her dad seems to size Barry up. But before Barry decides to actually run away, Iris rolls her eyes and lightly taps her fatherâs shoulder.
âDaddy, stop.â
Her dad blinks once and then his face erupts in a wide grin. âIâm just kidding. Good to see you, Allen.â He reaches out to shake Barryâs hand, clapping his shoulder.
âYou too, sir,â Barry nods once, and then again. âAnd please just call me Barry.â
The rounds are made. Barry greets DA Horton, a pretty woman with ochre colored skin and big brown eyes, who tells him to call her Cecile when they arenât at work. Wally is next, who gives him a long look, not unlike their father, before reaching out to hug him, whispering something in his ear that makes Barry smile faintly as he looks briefly at Iris before turning back to Wally and nodding firmly. Xuan and Theo greet him with wide smiles, and then Linda gives him a kiss on the cheek before introducing him to Daniel, a tall, sun-kissed man with near black eyes, unruly dark hair, and an easy smile.
The table is divided with family on one end and Wallyâs friends on the other, with Wally sitting in the middle on one side and Iris across from him. There are a couple of waiters, Allegra is here as the bartender, and just as Barry and Iris are sitting down, the waiters bring out several plates of appetizers featured on the menu: egg rolls, steamed buns, fried pork dumplings, ginger salads, edamame, baked sticky wings. There are several plates of each, enough for everyone to have some of everything and they all dig in, taking sips of Wallyâs birthday cocktail, something thatâs mostly champagne, in between.
Iris watches in fascination as Barry effortlessly makes conversation with people around him. Itâs not that sheâs necessarily surprised; Barry is an affable sort, her dad is an extremely good judge of character, and Wally and Cecile are generally easy-going people. But seeing it in action does something so funny to her that she canât describe it. When her dad asks how they met, he shoots her a wink and replies, âI saw her out dancing one night and I knew I had to get to know her.â Only she hears Lindaâs snort, but the answer does make her shake her head (and flush a little) in remembrance.
Then Cecile wants to know, inexplicably, about their first date.
âShe invited me over for dinner,â Barry explains.
âNo, IâŚâ She turns sharply to her side, narrowing her eyes at the unmitigated glee in his. He knows that if she explains how heâd just shown up (because sheâd invited him over for a one-night stand anyway), theyâd both be thrown under the bus.
Iris looks back at the table, at her dad whoâs got an eyebrow raised, and at Wally whoâs obviously trying not to laugh.
âI donât really count that as the first date,â she responds through clenched teeth. Barry leans into her, arm draped over her shoulder, fingers playing absently with her dressâs collar.
âSo do you count hanging out at Fall Fest?â
She isnât fooled by the casual tone of his question. âYou were there with your friends. You ditching them had nothing to do with me.â
He reaches out and fingers the simple gold open circle studs sheâs wearing. The action makes her look at him again and thereâs something behind the playfulness in his gaze, something that sings like there is only one for me; you have made that a possibility, like we could take that step to see, mm; if this is really gonna be, like all sheâs gotta do is say yes to whatever statement his eyes are making, to whatever question his fingers are stitching into her skin.
âMe leaving them had everything to do with you.â
And sheâs, for a second (or for a minute, or for some infinite period of time) lost in it, lost in him, forgetting that this is not a private moment, that people are watching, that the goosebumps that are gliding up her arms and the heavy rise and fall of her chest are for everyone to see.
Linda lets out a cough, a way too obvious attempt to break the tension.
âBut if weâre talking about our first official date,â Barry says, holding her gaze for a second longer before turning back to her family, âwe went on a picnic.â
She canât look at them, not yet, and she saves face by turning to Linda whose own eyes are filled with mirth.
âOh, a picnic,â Cecile squeals. âHow sweet.â
âYeah,â he replies, smiling. âIt was sweet: the company and the dessert.â
She thinks of the dessert, the way heâd licked at her like she was the sweetest thing heâd ever had in his mouth; Iris has to avert her eyes from them again, lest they see her suddenly widened eyes and her speeding pulse, her legs crossing and uncrossing again.
Wally, bless his soul, takes up the conversation from there, turning it to something heâd figured out in one of his classes. Iris leans into Barry.
âYou do too much,â she tells him quietly.
He nods in concedence. âYouâre probably right.â Then one corner of his mouth lifts again. âBut you canât tell me you donât like it.â
She pinches him at that and he yelps, rubbing at his arm.
âIâm gonna hurt you later,â she threatens, stretching up to whisper it in his ear.
He licks his lips, eyes blazing. âYou promise?â
She punches him lightly on the arm and he responds with a kiss to her cheek.
They fall into individual conversations after that. Plates disappear and more food appears; champagne glasses are taken away or refilled. Iris eats on most of whateverâs put in front of her, but she drinks slowly since it is still a school night. Sheâs half-listening to Linda and Dan tell her parents about some trip that theyâre interested in taking to Vietnam, where all of Danâs grandparents still live. Her dad and Cecile are flirting a little bit, she thinks, which, weird. Still, sheâs got an ear to the conversations that Barry is having. He starts off talking to Jessie, one of Wallyâs friends that have been around since Wally started at CCU, about nanotechnology, something Iris has zero interest in, and they geek out about it for long enough that Iris gets bored of it. But that leads them to a conversation about which professors are still at CCU, where Barry also went for undergrad and grad, finishing both eight years ago. That tells her that Barry is about five years older than her, which Iris guesses she can see in his mannerisms, in how comfortable he is in his career and in his thoughts and even in the way he carries his body.
Wally takes Barryâs attention away from Jessie after a while. Barry moves away from Iris enough that he can focus on whatever Wallyâs saying. It takes his arm from her chair but he maintains contact by planting his hand on her bare thigh, thumb rubbing against her lightly. She can only hear snippets of their conversation, words their deeper voices, though whispered, canât hide. She hears, at one point, âI think your sister is the loveliest woman Iâve ever known, in temperament and beauty, and Iâm here for as long as sheâll have me.â
She doesnât think she was supposed to hear that,
(although, sheâll wonder later that night if, purposefully, Barry had said it loud enough for her to do so).
Still, she does, whether he meant for her to or not. And she grapples with it for a moment. Because heâs said something similar before. Heâs told her that heâs whipped and that he likes her and that he wants. The reality is: sheâs wondered if it were true. She knows better than anyone the power of words, how theyâre used to not only tell stories, but to tell lies, to manipulate, to coerce. And of course she doesnât think that Barry would do any of those things, but sheâd thought that his words had been just...words, pretty things to make her feel good.
(Okay, so maybe that itâs really true, either. But itâs been easier to take him at face value, to pen this story based on her own feelings, not always realizing that Barryâs just as much of a character here, that his dialogue matches the action, the imagery, foreshadowing whatever it is thatâs really happening here.)
So saying this to her brother, however, privately and in the seriousness she knows is accompanied by his furrowed eyebrows and pursed mouth...well, that crystalizes it for her. Her reaction, though unsurprising in its intensity (because everything about this with him has been intense), is abrupt. Her entire body seizes up with, god, feeling, with emotions sheâs been, apparently, cultivating since the moment he asked her to dance. She goes hot at the same time that she physically shivers, with her own words unspoken, with feelings suddenly realized, with raw passion, with all you gotta do is say yes; don't deny what you feel, let me undress you, baby; open up your mind and just rest; i'm about to let you know, you make me so...
She silently downs the rest of her drink, looking around the room to see if anyone has noticed her eyes darting to and fro, literally on the edge of a breakdown. She takes a big breath and wonders what she should do about this inconvenient revelation.
Barry turns to her, that same soft smile on his face. But, noticing what he perceives as her solemnity, he pulls from his conversation and slides his hand up her thigh and over her hip to settle on her waist. Her skin tingles at his touch.
âYou alright? Youâre not talking much.â
âYeah,â she nods, lips turning up, hoping he canât see the slight bit of panic sheâs feeling. âYeah. You? Surviving the interrogation?â
âThey havenât thrown me out yet, so I think so.â
She gives him a quiet laugh. But then he goes a little thoughtful too, licking his lips and staring at her. He reaches out to push a lock of hair behind her ear, and then he keeps his hand on her, running along the side of her face, down until heâs holding her by the back of her neck, his thumb still rubbing along the apples of her cheeks. He doesnât look away, blinking as if to steady her features.
âWhat?â she questions, a bit nervously, wondering if he can see what sheâs just realized in her features. He always looks at her as if he can, as if he can read her. He doesnât speak for a moment, then,
âYouâre really pretty.â
Iris scrunches her nose a little. âAre you drunk?â
âNo,â he shakes his head. âI donât know, I just⌠you seem kind of far in your head right now and I know that compliments always make you blink back into the moment.â He gives a small grin. âOr make you blush.â
âIâm Black,â she counters. âI donât blush.â
âHmm,â he hums, grin widening. âMaybe you donât get red like me, but you blush.â He runs his thumb across her bottom lip, tracing the plump curve. âYour eyes look sort of blown and you bite this lip and,â he leans closer, speaking close to her ear, âI can practically see your breathing get deeper.â
Iris decides that itâs only because of his thumb on her mouth that she doesnât complete each of these steps heâs outlined. Instead, she circles her hand around his wrist and gives him a frown against his thumb.
âI feel like Iâm at a disadvantage here,â she reveals. âYou do make me blush, just like you said, but I feel like youâre always so, soâŚâ
She lets the sentiment taper off, not wanting to truly acknowledge that she feels like sheâs the one stepping out of her comfort zone, the one hanging off the ledge. But he chuckles, the sound connoting more incredulity than humor.
âYouâre kidding, right?â
Her brows furrow, briefly confused. âBearâŚâ
âDo you think Iâm composed, Iris?â
She snaps back, not liking his tone. âWell youâre always so goddamn smug andâŚâ
His kiss cuts her off. Somehow, heâs still mindful of the mixed company, she assumes, because itâs a kiss like earlier: with some tongue, but still quick and nothing particularly distasteful. Even still, she tries to chase after him, to deepen the kiss, because she really just canât help it where heâs concerned. When he pulls back, he resumes running his thumb along her mouth, and she knows that her lipstick is officially fucked.
âIâm not composed, Iris,â he tells her, eyes darting across her face. He, at least, lowers his voice so that they arenât making a scene. âIâm, literally, a fucking mess around you. I donât know, I'm just trying to make you think Iâm confident, so you donât think Iâm too boring or, or before you realize that thereâs someone better out there for you.â
He holds her gaze, blue-green eyes keeping her captive. Itâs all she can do to keep from falling into him, from blurting out her newfound revelation. Itâs all she can do to not weep at the fact that heâs apparently in this too, that she isnât the only one losing her shit right now.
âIris, you asked me what I was doing to you. And I told you itâs nothing that you arenât doing to me. And thatâs the truth. Whatever you got, I'm probably so far past that already.â
The words get stuck, then, the song thatâs been playing in her head since she saw him this evening, since sheâs thought of what it would be like to be desired by someone like this, since she was a little girl dreaming, the sound like loving you has taken time, take time; but I always knew you could be mine, the melody one that skips in tune with her heart every time Barry makes these grand declarations like heâs just done.
He gives her another peck on the mouth, likely figuring that sheâs lost all mental function. He isnât wrong, and when Wally calls for his attention again, he gives her one more caress before turning back to him.
Still dazed, Iris turns and locks eyes with Linda whoâs gazing at her in concern.
âYou okay, Iris?â She eyes Barry over her shoulder. âThat seemed pretty intense.â
âCan we talk?â Because Linda and Dan had been like this, enamored with each other. And Iris just wants to get it right. âNot right now, but later in the week?â
Linda nods. âYeah, okay. Of course we can.â She takes a hold of both of Irisâs hands and gives a good squeeze. âBut I see you retreating right now. Donât. Weâll talk later, but donât space out here. Stay in this moment; stay in this feeling.â
She looks up at her best friend. Iris can admit that she thought she knew love. Sheâs seen it in others, sheâs written about it. But feeling it, at least what she thinks might be the beginning of it, is overwhelming. So she attempts to do as her friend asks and stay in the moment.
The parents leave around 10, with strict instructions to not tear apart the restaurant. The Parks have offered the place âtil about 1, likely even later. With the tables pushed back, white strobe lights turned on, and the DJ from CCU already set up, the place could almost be mistaken for a club. More of Wallyâs friends, or at least, more people he knows from school, those who werenât invited to the more intimate dinner part of the night, start to file in and an off-duty cop that their dad has hired is manning the door. Irisâs 21st birthday had consisted of her own dinner at Goldenâs and a night out at some bar downtown, but she thinks that Wally has got the right idea, making it more exclusive like this.
In an effort to âstay in the momentâ (and not freak out about the fact that sheâs officially acknowledged that sheâs fallen into some sort of infatuation with Barry Allen), Iris orders her second of the birthday cocktail and sits down at the bar alongside Dan and Linda to watch the younger adults dance to the music. A tall woman in a pretty gold dress has a camera looped around her neck and is taking pictures of her classmates, all in their white, gold, or black party outfits. Sheâd gotten a few family portraits earlier, some of Linda and Iris, and one of Barry and Iris that had been meant to be pretty simple, them standing next to each other with Iris leaned in close, Barry holding on to her waist. But heâs standing just slightly behind her, with his big hand spread over her hip, and heâs looking down at her as she smiles softly for the camera. The photographer had shown them the photo after and it was the first time she had seen them together, the first time she can maybe see what he means when he tells her that heâs so far past wherever she is right now. But, and Iris can see it now, is feeling it now: he may not be as far past her as he thinks.
Now, Linda and Iris are the de facto chaperones for the night, a task that Linda is taking seriously as she hops up every few minutes to make sure no one is tearing up her parentsâ place. Barry, whoâd been talking to her dad before he left, strolls over to her, expression calm. He walks right into her, positioning himself between her legs, planting his hands right on her hips.
âIâm sorry,â he says.
Iris, in the process of looping her arm around his neck, pulls back until only her hand is circling his throat. âWhat are you sorry for?â
âI told you that I would,â he waves a hand as he tries to find his words, âthat I would give you the time that you need. And I told myself that I would take it easy, that I wouldnât pressure you. But I think earlier, I, I wasâŚâ
âWait, no.â She shakes her head, stopping him. She has to lean in closer, because the DJ has just started up and the music is loud in the relatively small space, in addition to her currently drunk brother and his friends singing along loudly to the song. âYou didnât do anything wrong. Iâm just trying to figure out what it all means. This is, this is new to me, and Iâm just...â
He nods slowly when she trails off, flicking his pink tongue out to swipe across his mouth. Iris follows the action, eyes darting up when his lips start to curve up.
âIâm here until you figure it out.â He steps closer, closing the distance between them. Her legs wrap around his waist automatically, hands sliding up until theyâre holding onto her hips. âAnd in the meantime, we can get a little tipsy and make out like weâre 21 again.â
âOh, so you did a lot of drunk making out at 21?â
His eyes go big. âOf course not. Just maybe once or twice, you know.â He taps her hip. âAnd with no one as pretty as you.â
Iris barks out a laugh. âNice save.â
He grins wide. âYeah. I thought so too.â
He orders another drink too, and Allegra smirks at the both of them, her version of a smile, as she sets their drinks down.
Iris grabs her drink and raises the glass. âLetâs toast.â
âOkay,â Barry agrees. âWhat are we toasting to?â
âNew relationships?â she tries.
âSure,â he nods. âAnd to figuring it out.â
They clink glasses.
She doesnât know how long it takes Barry to get her alone in a dark corner, grinding on one another to the music. They sit at the bar for a little while longer, until they finish their cocktails. They order another, though Iris asks for more of whatever mixers are being used than champagne. They donât try to talk much since they canât really hear one another without shouting at the other. Instead, they watch the younger crowd dance for a while. Iris turns her chair all the way around so that she can keep an eye, and Barry sits down beside her. Heâs turned to the side so that he can crowd her, legs wide, both of his hands touching her.
At one point, Linda stands up and walks through the crowd in her tall black strappy heels and leather pants. She straightens the sheer white blouse sheâs got tucked into her pants and grabs the microphone from the DJ.
âAlright,â she starts amidst groans from the crowd when the music is cut. âOh hush it.â She searches out the crowd until she finds Wally and then she smiles at him. âSo Iris and I really want to thank you all for coming out tonight; sheâs not up here because speaking in front of crowds isnât really her thing, but I know I speak for us both when I say that weâre so happy to celebrate my honorary baby brother. Get drunk, but donât forget to tip the bartender. Have fun, but not enough that you tear my parentsâ shit up. And as weâre drinking and dancing, letâs remember the beautiful man that weâre here to love on. Iâm so incredibly lucky that you let me into your life when I made my way into Irisâs. Happy birthday and I love you, Wally.â
Wally blows a kiss at Linda and then turns to catch Irisâs eyes. She sees the sheen of unshed tears in Wallyâs and he mouths an âI love youâ at her that she immediately mouths back. Up front, Linda starts to move away from the mic and then comes back. âAnd one round of shots on me!â
The music starts back up and the partiers get back into the groove. Iris and Barry sit for moments longer, until the music changes to something lower, sultrier, the lyrics seductive, i-i recognize the butterflies inside me, ah; sense is gonna be made tonight, tonight; all you gotta do is say yes, the beat one that she can feel in every part of her. Barry must feel it too.
âDance with me,â he requests, standing, and she nods, taking his hand and following him out. He finds them a spot off to the opposite end of the DJ, further away from where the crowd of dancers have also begun to pair off, to fall victim to the beat of this song. Barry stands with his back against the wall, near where a curtain hangs shadowed from the others, and he turns Iris until her ass is pressed firmly against his front.
She begins to rock, winding her hips in easy circles, letting her body learn the rhythm of the song, all you gotta do is say yes, letting her body get lost in the music, lost in the crooned commands as the artists sing, donât deny what you feel, let me undress you, baby. He matches her, swaying with her, touching on her as he does. He holds onto her, one hand pressed just beneath her breasts, the other right above her pelvis. She lets her head fall back onto his shoulder, wrapping her arm behind her around his neck. Barry leans down and presses a kiss to her cheek, her ear, tugging at the lobe with his teeth, with his tongue, sucking on her.
âHmmm,â she purrs, grinding back against him, humming along, open up your mind and just rest; iâm about to let you know that you make me so, so...
âIâve been watching you,â Barry tells her, whispering it into her ear over the music. âIn this dress all fucking night. Do you know what itâs been doing to me?â
She shakes her head in response to his question.
âItâs been driving me crazy,â he responds. âWallyâs little friends have been watching you, probably wanting to touch you like Iâve been wanting to do all night.â
She doesnât stop dancing, hips moving slow to one side, slower to the other, Barry moving with her. He grinds behind her, holding her tight against him. She can feel him start to swell against her ass and she closes her eyes at the feeling, at the sound of his voice, rough and arousal-soaked, speaking in her ear.
âYou walked up to me on the street with this leg out.â He rubs down as much of her thigh as he can reach and then back up. âYour skin glowing and that sexy mouth of yours smiling at me.â
He tips his fingers back up her thigh and he reaches under her dress and across her pelvis. Her legs spread as she bends her knees, still in time to the music, but it gives him more access. The panties sheâs got on are black and high cut, and Barry caresses her bare bikini line. Her grip tightens on his neck, bringing them even closer, making it easier to slide his fingers even further into her panties.
âBarry,â she whispers, and she knows he canât hear her. But he doesnât need to because he taps her on her pelvis, his longest finger catching on her clit.
âDonât worry,â he says, âIâm not gonna finger fuck you out here.â
Iris realizes, as he says it, that maybe she wouldnât hate it; because the singers are saying, you make me so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, and he does, make her so so so...and sheâs feeling it, feeling him, wondering what people might see if they looked over, wondering why the thought of it makes her stomach clench, a little in embarrassment, a little more in something that makes the clench move lower, her sex clamping around where she wants his fingers, where she wants his dick.
She turns, wraps her arms around his neck, and kisses him. It gets deep fast, with Iris licking into Barryâs mouth and Barry returning her kiss with fervor. She grips at the hair at the nape of his neck, and he reaches down, gripping a firm handful of her ass to bring her closer. She moans into his mouth, catching his answering groan.
She pulls back. âCome with me.â
She takes his hand and leads him through the crowd. No one is paying much attention to them; Wally is still in the middle of the floor, dancing against a tall good looking dark-skinned man. Linda is out there too, Dan dancing his normal one-two step move as Linda leans close to him, her arms looped around his neck. Iris takes Barry to the back, down the hall that leads past the kitchen. The bathrooms are there, and Iris checks to make sure no one is coming before she pushes through the door and leads him inside. She takes him to the last and the largest of the three stalls, past the three gold circular mirrors above clean white sinks; her shoes are loud on the black marble floors.
âYou know,â Barry says as she locks the stall door behind her. He grabs for her, clutching her hand. âYou claimed it was me who got you to do stuff like this, but you brought me back here.â
She lifts her eyebrow at him, even as she moves past him to lean against the wall. âYou saying you donât want me in here?â
She positions herself so that her leg is peeking out from the long slit in her dress. She doesnât know whatâs gotten into her.
Except maybe she does.
The weight of her earlier revelation sits heavy on her, and the song thatâs been playing, the you make me so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, sits just as heavy, pushing on her thighs, and on her heart too; and Iris needs to do something with it, needs to let go of some of this feeling, to get out the parts that might start to be too much, that are already beginning to flood her, so that she can make sense of whatâs really there.
So she looks Barry in the eye, runs her manicured nails over her throat, down through her cleavage, over her belly until she can touch at the top of her thigh. She opens the skirt, showing him the panties heâd been playing with earlier, the lace around her waist, the thin fabric that shows exactly what itâs supposed to be covering.
âBear?â
Heâs over to her in two long strides. He plants both of his hands on the wall behind her, crowding her.
âI want you wherever you want me,â he tells her. âOn your couch, on a blanket in the woods, in as many places in this restaurant as youâll let me fuck you in.â
He licks his lips, but he doesnât move to touch her. Instead, he thrusts his hips against her so that she can feel him, hard and solid against her pelvis.
âThis is what you do to me, baby. I think about you and Iâm like this.â He pushes against her one more time and then tells her to âturn around.â
She does. And the next few moments are like something out of a film, how rushed they are, how passionate. He presses her against the wall and touches her as he rubs his dick on her ass, slipping his hand into the top of her dress to play with her breasts. Her bra is made of the same thin material as her panties and he alternates between squeezing the whole of her breast and then pinching at the nipples, and then moving to the other to do more of the same. He kisses her wherever his mouth catches her: in her hair, on her cheek, on her shoulders when her dress starts to slide. Theyâre both breathing heavily; Iris is grinding back onto Barry where heâs so goddamn hard behind her, his sex swollen and his chest covering her. Her hands are clenching and unclenching into fists as she bangs lightly on the wall, moaning deep in her throat, humming her pleasure, you make me so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so...
Iris hears the clank of his belt unbuckling. And her pussy is ready for him, slick and throbbing as she looks behind her to see him shoving his pants past his knees, gripping and then tearing open a condom heâs gotten from somewhere, caressing his own thick dick as he rolls it on. He leans over and kisses her, wet and sloppy, holding her in this position until heâs done devouring her mouth. Then he turns her back to the wall and lifts her dress, draping it above her waist. The cool air hits her heated flesh, and that contact, and Barryâs fingers spreading her thighs, and Barry pushing her panties to the side, rubbing along her slit to make sure sheâs ready for him, it makes her moan loud and long.
Barry pushing into her cuts her off.
Her heels put her at the perfect height to arch her back into him, to take him in.
âShit, Iris,â he murmurs. He pulls out, pushes back in, pulls out to the tip, pushes back in, and Iris knocks her forehead against the wall. âAll the time,â he tells her, âI, I think about being in this pussy all the time.â
Her pussy opens for him, when he says that, letting him in deeper. Barry finds a rhythm, short strokes first, shallow and brief; and then longer strokes that bury him in, that smacks his pelvis against her ass. She loves the feel of him behind her, even if she misses being able to touch him, but the feel of his kissing on her and touching on her and fucking so hard into her more than makes up for it.
And then the door opens. Iris hears the music grow louder for several seconds and the unsteady clack of multiple pairs of heels and the drunken laughter of the women walking.
Iris whimpers, the sound turning into a moan because Barry doesnât stop, just keeps riding her, gripping her waist tight. She holds in the moan she wants to let out, holds in how much she wants to slap her hand against the wall since she canât. Barry angles himself closer to her.
âI think you like it, Iris,â he murmurs into her ear. âAs soon as that door opened, you got wetter, baby.â
âAhhh,â she breathes heavily as he pumps into her.
âYou like it when you could get caught, huh? When someone might hear you?â
Iris shuts her eyes tight, shakes her head, and then bites down on her lip to keep from yelling out. But he feels so good, so thick and hard, and the feelingâs curling thick in her belly, thicker in her walls quivering around him. And he might not necessarily be wrong, that she likes it, the possibility of being caught, the fact that she could be heard. The loud laughter sheâd heard when the door opened has quieted to softer giggles now; maybe they think sheâs so into this that she doesnât notice that the door never opened again, but theyâre still there, amused by whatâs happening. And from the way she keeps tightening on Barryâs dick, the way sheâs pushing back against him, harder and harder, sheâs more than into this.
âNo? You donât like this?â Barry questions and he shifts her dress even higher up her waist, pressing her harder into the wall.
âFuck,â she grunts at the contact.
He gives a short, breathy chuckle. âDonât worry. I like it too.â He reaches up and pulls her lip from between her teeth. âDonât hold back. Let them hear you. Louder, baby.â He keeps rocking into her, as he moves that same hand down her chin, down the line of her neck, until he wraps a hand around the base of her throat. âMoan for me louder. Let them know whoâs fucking you in here, baby.â
âOohhh, yes,â she moans, only a touch louder.
He rubs a hand over her exposed ass cheek, softly, reverently. And then he pulls her hand back and smacks her hard.
âBarryyyyy!â She yells. Her rhythm falters and her head falls back against his shoulder. The arch in her back deepens and it pushes him even deeper.
âJust like that,â Barry groans.
âDamn,â she hears one of the girls in the bathroom breathe.
âMaybe we should get out of here,â another says.
After Iâm done texting Chris to see if I can come over after this.â
There is another round of laughs and Barry laughs again against her throat. âThey like what Iâm doing to you too.â
Thereâs a light thin layer of sweat on her skin, the sheen on her face and her chest, down her thighs. Sheâs wet, (god, she always gets so wet with him), and sheâs dripping out around his dick. Her dress is probably going to be ruined.
But none of that matters. All that does is the sensations sheâs feeling. Sex with Barry always takes up every one of her senses, and this is no different: she can taste the champagne still on her tongue, the mint from his when heâd kissed her; she can smell the citrus of the lemongrass on his skin, the rose water on her own, the heady scent of their arousal filling her nostrils; she canât physically see much, with her eyes constantly shut tight, but she can picture it, picture them, his pants down at his ankles, legs as wide as they can go, her dress hiked up over her hips, the long length of him sliding in and out of her soaked pussy from behind; the feel of her breasts pressed into the cool wall, his fingers pressed into her throat, her hand clutching onto that same wrist; the soft sound of their breathing, the girls speaking softly, the music still playing, matching her cries, singing ah, ah, yea-yeah, yeah, yea-yeah; oh right there, right there, right there; right there, right there; right there, oh, oh, mm, mmm.
âTell me what you want, Iris,â Barry groans. âTell me, tell them, fuck, babyâŚâ
âHarder,â she says, wanting to come, needing him to get her there. âHarder, Bear, fuck meâŚâ
He does. He shifts again so that he can push all the way into her, riding her ass, and he long strokes into her, knocking against something that makes her quiver, harder and harder, a little bit faster, but always good, so good, so good, so, so, soâŚ
âBarry.â Her orgasm hits her just as hard as heâs been doing. She doesnât even realize itâs coming, not until her entire body seizes up, even her toes curl in her shoes, and she pushes back on Barry, squeezing him tight. It triggers his own and he grips her waist as he spills into her, the feel of his throbbing dick prolonging her climax, making her fall back into him until sheâs completely spent.
âDid you, uh, do a lot of this when you were 21 and tipsy making out?â
Iris stands against the wall of the stall, looking down at her dress for stains, holding her underwear in her hands because she couldnât stand the wet feel of them on her. The bathroom is quiet now, save for the faint music still coming from the front. She knows that they should hurry before someone else comes in, but she canât really move yet.
Barry laughs as he shoves himself back into his pants and buckles back up. Heâs already tied the condom up and flushed it down the toilet.
âGod, no. The most I could get was a little over the shirt boob action.â
Iris shakes her head, a little fondly. âPlease never say boob action again.â
âNo?â He rubs his hand down the front of his sweater. âThatâs not sexy?â
Iris shakes her head again as he walks back over to her. âNot even a little bit. Thatâs probably why you werenât getting any.â
âYouâre probably right. But Iâve upped my game now.â
Iris laughs. âYouâve upped your game?â
He nods, a goofy little grin on his face. He stops in front of her and takes one of her hands in his.
âYeah. We did a little dancing, a little touching.â He wiggles his eyebrows and grabs at the panties in her hand, holding them up. âAnd I got you to fuck me in a bathroom.â
âOh?â Iris watches as he puts the panties into his pockets. âYou got me to fuck you?â She looks down at herself, and then sticks her leg out further. The slit of this dress, the shoes, the way the dress drapes her frame is undoubtedly a tongue-tier. Barry nods, swallows, and meets her gaze again, those eyes doing that graying thing sheâs found she loves.
âY-yeah. We can, uh, we can share the credit.â
Iris laughs out loud at that. âCome on,â she squeezes his hand and presses a kiss to his cheek. âLetâs get out of here. Weâre already gonna have to sneak out. What if those girls tell Wally? I canât believe you had me doing all that.â
They leave the bathroom stall, heading for the door.
âItâs my game,â Barry replies, and Iris hides her laughter as they slip back into the party.
She looks for Wally to tell him that sheâs leaving. Luckily, heâs at the bar, laughing with Allegra and the man he was dancing with earlier.
âIris!â he shouts when he sees her. âBarry!â
Iris laughs as she steps into his open arms. âAre you having a good time, baby?â
âIâm having the best time.â He squeezes her. âI bet you are too.â
He looks over her shoulder at Barry and when she turns too, she sees a bit of color in his cheeks.
âWhat are you talking about?â she deflects.
Wallyâs shrug is not at all sly. âI heard that someone was in the ladiesâ room screaming out âBarry.ââ He winks at Barry who goes even redder. âYou should probably be glad Xuan and Theo think of you as a daughter.â
She rolls her eyes, even as she turns her head to hide her embarrassment. âWe just came to tell you that weâre leaving. Iâve got class in the morning.â
âOf course,â Wally says, nodding. âAnd youâre both probably tired.â
âOkay, bye,â Iris starts to move out of his arms.
Wally laughs and tightens his arms around her. âIâm only kidding, big sis.â Then his smile turns softer and he casts another glance at Barry, before reaching down and cupping her cheek.
âThis man is gone over you, Iris,â he says softly. âAnd Iâm so happy for you. Nobody I know deserves a love like this more than you do.â
Iris gives him a smile and then another quick hug. âI love you.â
âI love you, too.â He pulls Barry in for a hug. âSo good to officially meet you.â
âYou too, man.â
And with that, Barry takes her hand and leads him out, and Iris follows beside him, overcome with what sheâs feeling for him. Sheâd thought the sex might give her some space to think, but itâs only really just heightened it. They are still in the rising action of this story, gliding higher and higher on a diagram, climbing towards a climax sheâs becoming excited to experience.
Sheâs only scared of what might happen when they come down from it.
All you gotta do is say yes
(Don't deny what you feel, let me)

1650 London
With a final agonized scream, the raven haired woman collapsed against the pillows piled at the head of the bed as the cries of a newborn filled the room. Granny smiled down at the scrunched up face she held in her hands. The rest of the childâs body followed. âItâs a girl, Mary Margaret.â
The young woman laughed weakly as Granny held her daughter up for her to see. âYou were right, Granny,â she breathed.
âWell of course, I was right,â she replied, indignant. With quick, efficient movements Granny cleaned the baby up and wrapped her in a soft blanket that she had just finished crocheting a few days before. âThat charm has been handed down in my family for generations and itâs never been wrong.â
The strong blonde man who had been waiting outside came running into the room just as the old midwife handed a small bundle wrapped in the white blanket to the exhausted but smiling woman reclined against the pillows. Making his way over to the bed, he placed a tender kiss on her temple. He reached around her shoulders to draw her into his side and looked down into the cloudy gray eyes that stared back at him. âItâs a girl, David,â his wife whispered, smiling up at him.
Grannyâs normally no nonsense exterior melted at the sight of the young family as she took in the tender moment. Mary Margaret sat reclined on the bed with her husbandâs arm around her as he stroked the crown of the nursing baby.
âOh look,â whispered David in surprise, âLook at the birthmark. On her neck.â
âIt looks like a swan in flight,â Granny said, nodding. âCanât say Iâve ever seen a birthmark with as clear a shape as that.â
Mary Margaret raised herself slightly from the pillow to look down at her daughter before flopping back again, her eyes glazing over with weariness. âWow,â she said on a breathy exhale as she lost her battle with fatigue.
âCertainly appropriate, with our name.â David chuckled then leaned in and again kissed his wifeâs temple. âThank you for everything Granny. I donât know what we would have done without you.â
Granny scoffed, waving aside his sentiment. âYou would have been fine, David,â she asserted, âYouâve got yourself a fine, strong woman there and a good, level head on your shoulders. You would have figured out something.â She came closer and watched fondly as the baby continued to suckle, oblivious to her worn out mother. âNow, the room is yours for as long as you need it.â She waved away his objection just as he was opening his mouth. âDavid, I have work for you that will more than adequately compensate me for your room and board. Mary Margaret needs to rest. Itâs no easy feat to bring a child into this world.â She turned her attention to the dozing woman. âSee?â she questioned him. âSheâll need to stay right there taking care of this little one for several days, at least. Once sheâs up and around, I can use her too. Iâm getting too old for this, and Ruby isnât old enough to take over for me.â
David closed his mouth, stunned, as he realized exactly what Granny was offering him and his family. âAre you saying that we can stay here? Permanently?â he asked, incredulous.
âOf course, I am,â the matronly woman acknowledged with a smile. âHarold, God rest his soul, would never forgive me if I put your family out on the streets. Especially this little one.â She bent down and pressed a kiss to the babyâs forehead.
Davidâs shoulders slumped in relief and acceptance. âThank you, Granny,â his voice caught with emotion, âI canât tell you how much that means.â
âYou just take care of your family,â the old woman gruffed, âThat is payment enough.â
Granny looked fondly at the sleeping mother and baby before slipping out of the room.
~*~*~
Pirate captain Killian Jones entered his cabin, weariness hanging about him like a cloak. It was the first time in three days that he had seen the inside of his quarters. Ever since a storm the likes of which he had never seen came upon the ship that he had called home ever since Rumplestiltskin had murdered his brother and turned him into the cursed creature he was now. He had little doubt that the monster was behind the storm. The suddenness with which it blew up and the ferocity he and his men had battled for days all spoke to the magical, dark magical, attributes of the storm. Ever since Rumplestiltskin left him alone on the floor of this very cabin over 60 years before, he had delighted in returning every so often, taunting and tormenting him. The only reason Killian could come up with is that the monster just wanted to remind him of their connection and that, so far, he had failed in his vow to destroy him.
They had now, finally, left the storm behind them. Killian stripped down to just his leather pants, hanging his coat, waistcoat, and shirt on various furnishings in the cabin to dry. Sitting down at his desk, he pulled off his boots and socks. Once he sufficiently dried himself, he pulled down his logbook to record the battle with the storm. As he flipped to the next empty page, his eyes and thoughts skimmed over previous entries covering many years.
The attempt, at first, to hide his new nature from his crew, until the overwhelming bloodlust took over and he attacked and killed one of his men.
The mutiny that was spawned because of his lack of control. When faced with the anger, and yes, fear, of his once loyal crew, Killianâs rage at his helplessness against his fate and their perceived audacity completely filled him until he attacked them, leaving the entire crew dead at his feet.
Killian sneered as the next entry and memory paraded itself across his mindâs eye. Watching from afar as his parents frantically searched for not only their beloved sons, but also the Blue Fairy. He would assume, given her magic, that she was aware of what had happened to him and his brother. She apparently couldnât reveal to the king and queen just how utterly and completely she had failed in her duty to protect the family from Rumpelstiltskin. So when she left their presence and saw what had happened to Liam and Killian, she disappeared as well.
Finally gaining enough control over the bloodlust that he was able to take on a new crew.
The ensuing decades that were his darkest, both as a pirate and as a vampire. He refused to feed on his crew, that could get expensive quickly, but his own self-loathing and impotence in the face of his nature were enough to unleash the, literally, bloodthirsty pirate that was always just under the surface, the bloodlust licking at his veins. When they captured merchant ships, Killian led his crew in wholesale slaughter, gorging himself on the still warm blood of their adversaries, as his men transferred the loot to the Jolly. Once he was sated, he used his powers of compulsion and persuasion to make his crew believe that when they were dumping the drained corpses overboard, they were simply disposing of rotted food.
Watching as his parents grew old with no heir until they passed and the throne went to the son of Brennanâs younger brother.
Finally turning to the last entry, his eyes drifted over lines that he knew he didnât write.
The Darkâs minionâs downfall is foretold
When True Loveâs Kiss doth unfold
Between soulmates unbound by time
The blue eyed prince and his golden haired Swan
Their True Love will break the hold
And Dark magic will be no more.
Killianâs brows furrowed as he read the lines again. Darkâs minion? Dark magic no more? Is it talking about Rumplestiltskin? The blue eyed prince and his golden haired Swan? Soulmates? What does all this mean? The confusion he felt as he pored over the words yet again continued to grow. Who wrote this? How did it get here? Would one of my crew dare to enter my cabin without my knowledge and permission, much less write in my logbook?
His last entry was from three days before. So someone had made this entry at some point during the storm. But no matter how many times he read the words or tried to figure out answers to his questions, he couldnât make any sense of the entry in his journal. Shaking his head, he determined to put it out of his mind and concentrate on the recording of the storm.
Many hours later, while Captain Killian Jones slept, the Blue Fairy materialized in the cabin and waved her wand over the sleeping man. With the white magic that settled on him, she knew that when he woke, he would have no memory of the prophecy recorded in his journal. Not until the proper time. Not until the blue eyed prince met his golden haired Swan.
~*~*~
Killian Jones entered the inn and stamped his nearly frozen feet on the threshold as he shivered under his traveling cloak. Anger licked his veins as he made his way over to the blazing fire in the hearth to warm himself after his trek from the London Pool where his ship was docked. He was chasing down a lead that was supposed to give him information on a possible way to destroy Rumplestiltskin. Whispers and rumors had reached him about an instrument that might be capable of killing the monster and freeing him from the Darkness that coursed through him. Unfortunately, that lead had proved fruitless.
A young woman with sunshine in her hair hurried over to him at the hearth with a pint of ale. âMay I take your cloak, sir,â she asked.
âAye, lass,â he replied. âThank you.â Too distracted to take real notice of the young woman, he handed her his cloak and sat down at a nearby table. She returned moments later with a bowl of hot stew that smelled divine. The months at a time being out to sea made fresh, hot food all the more welcome when making port.
He looked up into the girlâs face and was captivated by the green eyes that skittered away from his once he caught them. As she turned away from him and headed back towards the kitchen, something came over him. Something that he hadnât experienced in decades. The bloodlust that he had under control for over 70 years completely took him by surprise. He felt his fangs snap into place and a red haze descended over his sight, telling him that his pupils were red as blood. He bowed his head toward his meal until he had himself under control again, eyes blue as the summer sky and fangs retracted.
He looked up again and scanned the room he found himself in. Just like every other tavern heâd ever frequented, he found a large and cheerful hearth keeping the frigid cold of the freak London snowstorm at bay. Over to his left, he saw stairs leading up to the rooms for rent for weary travelers. The door opened again with more pushing their way through, seeking the warmth the inn offered. To the right of the door, the counter with the kitchen behind was bustling with the girl going back and forth between the counter and the blonde man behind it and the tables that the newcomers settled at.
Unfortunately, they had settled only a single table away from him and every time the girl came to attend to them, the bloodlust washed over him again. He concentrated even harder on the meal set before him, wrestling himself back under control when she approached him again.
âIs everything alright, sir,â she asked, âWould you like some fresh bread to go with the stew? Granny is just taking some out of the ovenâŚâ she trailed away as his eyes met hers again. He was gratified to see that there was nothing but curiosity and openness in her gaze. He had obviously been successful in keeping his true nature hidden from her.
âAye, lass,â he answered her, âthat would be lovely.â She turned away from him and as she did, he noticed the swan birthmark on her neck. A swan in flight.
The blue eyed prince and his golden haired Swan
A completely forgotten line from a completely forgotten journal entry he had found many years ago. Could this girl be the golden haired Swan? And he could only conclude that he must be the blue eyed prince. He sat, completely gobsmacked as he watched the girl approach his table again with several hunks of freshly baked bread on the tray she carried. She stopped at the other occupied tables, lightening her load every time, before she carried on toward him. Arriving, he couldnât help but take a deep inhale, noting the aroma of the bread as well as the scent of her, just to make sure that the bloodlust was firmly back under his control.
âThank you again, lass,â he drawled. âPlease conduct my sincere compliments to the cook of this delicious meal. Whom should I speak to about procuring lodging for the night? Iâm not inclined to go back out into that until it clears up a bit.â
Her eyes shot toward the door as it swung open yet again, letting in the largest crowd yet, along with the blustery wind and snow. âThat is very true, sir,â she acknowledged. âThe weather is fit for neither man nor beast. My father is behind the counter. Heâs the one you should speak to.â
âThank you. I shall do that as soon as I finish my meal,â he declared, tucking into the food before him yet again.
He used the last bite of bread to soak up the last of the broth from the stew before rising from his table and making his way toward the counter with the blonde man behind it. âGood evening, sir,â Killian called as he approached.
âGood evening,â the man replied. âI hope you enjoyed my wifeâs stew and Grannyâs bread.â
âUndoubtedly, sir,â he rejoined, âItâs been many a month since Iâve partaken of a meal as satisfying as the one I just enjoyed.â He leaned across the counter with his hand extended toward the man. âCaptain Killian Jones.â
âAh,â the man exclaimed, taking Killianâs outstretched hand. âI wondered if perhaps you were a seafaring man. David Swan. How else may I help you?â
It was all he could do to keep his face from showing his complete and utter surprise at the confirmation of his earlier thoughts. âA pleasure to meet you, David,â he answered, pointing back toward the door of the inn. âIâd rather prefer to not have to leave until the weather clears up. Might you have a room available until it does?â
âWe do indeed,â he affirmed. âEmma?â
âYes, Papa,â the girl answered, approaching the counter again.
âWould you please see that room 2 is ready for Captain Jones here,â he asked his daughter.
Killian reached out toward Emma, palm up, in a gesture of invitation. She lay her own hand in his own before he lifted it to place a small kiss to her knuckles. âThank you for the excellent service and meal tonight, Miss Emma. Itâs a pleasure to make your acquaintance.â
âYours as well, Captain,â she replied, with a slight curtsey, âIâll just go see to your room. Iâll return shortly.â
Killian watched her walk away, his thoughts in complete turmoil. Shaking his head and returning his attention to her father, he scratched behind his ear as he took in Davidâs broad smile. âSheâs nearly sixteen and would make a fine wife for a sea captain before too much longer.â David answered his unasked question.
Scratching furiously in nervousness, Killian repeated, âSo, sheâs 15, hmm?â He swallowed around the sizable lump in his throat as a petite black haired woman whose temples were just dusted with frost joined them at the counter.
She turned her eyes upon David with a slight reprimand in them before turning her gaze upon Killian. Green, just like Emmaâs. Must be her mother. Killian extended his hand toward the woman, just as he had moments before with the young woman. Brushing his lips across her knuckles, he introduced himself again. âCaptain Killian Jones, milady, at your service.â
âMy wife, and Emmaâs mother, Mary Margaret Swan,â David introduced them.
âItâs my honor,â Killian murmured, sincerely. âIf Iâm not mistaken, I have you to thank for the stew I partook of this evening?â
Mary Margaretâs cheeks tinged a light pink. âOh, it was nothing, Captain,â she deflected, âIâm so pleased you enjoyed it.â
âI truly did,â he affirmed. âI was just telling your husband that after many months at sea, a hot, fresh meal is greatly appreciated.â
Emma approached the counter again. âYour room is ready, Captain Jones. If youâll follow me please.â
With a slight bow to David and Mary Margaret and wishes from both sides for a pleasant evening, Killian followed Emma to his room.
~*~*~
It was nearly a fortnight later before the snow had melted enough for Killian to leave the inn. During the time he had spent with them, he had become quite good friends with the Swan family. He was careful to keep the rapidity with which he was losing his head over Emma hidden as he became her constant companion in her leisure time. Which admittedly, wasnât much. David and Mary Margaret didnât have any objection to his obvious affinity for their daughter, and he had even managed to win over the matriarch of the family, Granny. Being in such close quarters with Emma was an exercise in self control such that he had never had to endure before. But, in the end, he had been successful in keeping his true nature from the happy family. The puzzling questions concerning the journal entry still plagued him, but he thought that perhaps, with his new certainty of who Emma was, he might be able to figure out what the rest of it meant.
Entering his cabin, Killian immediately pulled down his logbook and flipped to the page containing the riddle. He hadnât thought of it since the evening after the storm, fifteen years before. Right about the time Emma would have been born, he thought. But upon seeing her birthmark and introducing himself to David, it had never been far from his mind. Unfortunately, he wasnât able to recall most of the words, so as soon as the snow was melted sufficiently, he rushed to the Jolly to look at the journal again.
The Darkâs minionâs downfall is foretold
When True Loveâs Kiss doth unfold
Between soulmates unbound by time
The blue eyed prince and his golden haired Swan
Their True Love will break the hold
And Dark magic will be no more.
Killian stared at the words before him, wrestling with them in his mind, trying to make sense out of them.
The Darkâs minionâs downfall is foretold
Foretold, that means prophecy. The Dark. The Darkness? The Darkness that makes him, makes me, what I am? The Darkâs minion? If the Darkness is what makes us, then Rumplestiltskin must be its minion. Downfall is foretold. He will fall when True Loveâs Kiss occurs between soulmates, the blue eyed prince and his golden haired Swan. Me and Emma. Unbound by time. What does that mean? Killian shook his head. He hadnât a clue. Their True Love will break the hold and Dark magic will be no more. That sounds like True Loveâs Kiss between me and Emma will destroy the Darkness. Then Rumplestiltskin can be destroyed. A sinister smile broke across his face. At last our tales will again intertwine. Revenge will be mine.
He could feel the anger and hatred rising within him, nearly triggering a blood frenzy within him. There was no way he could return to the inn with the bloodlust this close to the surface. He closed his eyes and willed himself back under control. He needed to get word to his crew and get as far away from here as he could. If Emma was his True Love, and the two of them were needed to destroy the Darkness and Rumplestiltskin, he had to get as far away from Emma as possible if he wanted to keep her and her family safe. If Rumplestiltskin were to find out about her, find out about her family, he wouldnât hesitate to destroy them. He had to keep her safe. Safe from him. And safe from him. Heâd come back for brief visits in the future, until she was a little bit older and ready for him to court and marry her. Â A sudden certainty came over him that if he wanted to court her, if he wanted to be worthy of her, his days of slaughter on the high seas and persuasion and compulsion on his crew were at an end. He couldnât continue to take their free will from them as his sire had taken his. Satisfied with his plans, he pulled out a sheet of parchment and began penning a missive to Emma and her family.
~*~*~
Six months later
Killian made his way through the streets of London with an arm raised to his face, trying to block the putrid smell that came from the devastating effects of the Black Death that was ravaging the continent and had made its way to Englandâs shores. He could only hope and pray that Emma and her family had not suffered any loss due to the epidemic. The heat mingled with the stench of death made for a rancid bouquet that was causing his last meal to roll within him, wanting to revolt. He finally reached the inn and made his way inside. Getting out of the blazing heat of the sun overhead and the stink from the rampant disease was such a relief, that he wanted to weep. But before he could collapse, his eyes caught the gaze of his friend behind the counter. A gaze that held unspeakable despair and immense pain. Killianâs greeting and smile died on his lips before he could utter a word.
He knew his Swanâs family had not been spared.
Emmaâs birthday had come and gone while heâd been at sea, and he now felt that the time was right to formally court her and make her his bride.
That hope for the future was shattered, however when Davidâs head slowly shook from side to side. He knew who Killian would be most anxious to see upon his arrival, but it was plain to see that he couldnât bring himself to utter the words. David came around the counter to embrace his friend. A wail of misery that came from the depths of his being threatened to consume him, but he clenched his jaw against it.
âWhen?â he gritted out.
âNine days.â Davidâs voice broke on a whisper. Drawing away from him, Killian tried to curl himself into a ball as the wail continued to try and break free.
David reached around his shoulders and drew him upright again as he led him toward the back of the inn. Pushing through the door back into the heat, dizziness overtook him as he looked at the three graves just a few feet from the door.
âGranny went first. She died in April,â David choked out. âWe thought that weâd been spared, since no one else came down with it right away.â Killian could feel the blood tears gathering at the corners of his eyes. He kept his focus on the ground before him as David continued to speak. âMary Margaret became ill seventeen days ago, and almost the same hour that I lost her, Emma was stricken. I couldnât bear to leave my beautiful Mary Margaret to decay, so I dug her grave next to Granny. Granny was the only mother my Mary Margaret ever knew.â
Killian chanced a brief glance at the grieving man beside him. The anguish painted there, left his skin with a grey pallor.
âDid I ever tell you our story?â David pressed on, without waiting for his answer. âI came from a family of shepherds. My mother passed when my youngest sister was born. I was seven. Mary Margaret lived in the nearby village and had always been kind to me when I came into town. But the man she called Father, was the most despicable of men. He was a slave to drink. Never satisfied with the work she did to maintain their household, constantly harassing her, beating her for no reason. She had finally worked up the courage to leave his house when he collapsed with wracking coughs. He was dead within days. She was sixteen. For some reason, she came to me. I could never understand why. She said it was because I made her feel safe. That when he would beat her, sheâd picture my face and sheâd be able to endure it.â He paused, shaking his head. âBut, why me? Wouldnât anyone else have helped her? I didnât do anything anybody else wouldnât have doneâŚâ He shook himself from his rambling memories and continued their story. âAfter knowing each other most of our lives, it didnât take us long to fall in love. When we couldnât hide Mary Margaretâs pregnancy anymore, my father kicked us out. We came to London to try to find a better life and Granny took us in. Only three weeks before Emma was born. Granny delivered her. It seemed only fitting that they should all be together in death.â
David fell silent. Killian could no longer hold back his tears. He collapsed to the ground, desperate to hide his face and the blood pouring down his cheeks from his friend, gasping sobs breaking free. David stood beside him, silent tears coursing down his own cheeks, letting Killianâs grief find a safe outlet that wouldnât be contained or interrupted. When the barking sobs subsided to quiet weeping, David patted his friend on the shoulder.
âIâll go prepare your room. Stay out here as long as you need.â He turned toward the door and disappeared inside.
Finally alone, Killian raised his blood streaked face to look at the graves before him. His golden haired Swan was gone. The woman he loved, his soulmate, was gone. What am I going to do now?

Most of the video is the August 10th recording but occasionally some promotional footage and the February 9th video are edited in to provide other views. The recording starts off with a lot of wandering, shakiness, and washout but gets better somewhat better as it goes on. This is somewhat more obstructed than other shows because the person in front was leaning forward and moving a lot, so there's a head in some of the scenes. "I Think That's It!"
Thursday 14th January 2021
Hello again everyone! Hope your week is going well so far, I'm really looking forward to reviewing today's episode! I feel there's a lot of emotion and drama going on in the soap right now, still so many secrets and lies to be exposed! I do believe that a new EastEnders trailer has gone out, I have say it looks absolutely brilliant, very exciting with confrontations between Frankie and Mick and then Ash and Suki!! Ooooo it's all going to kick off!! I'm really looking forward to seeing what's due to happen within the next couple of episodes! But back to this episode, I won't waste anymore of your time and jump straight into it!
Okay, so there's a few things I want to talk about. The first thing I'll mention first is Iqra! I do get the feeling that her relationship with Ash is kind of on the rocks, they seem to be disagreeing on things a lot. Plus Ash seems to have a big interest in Peter all of a sudden! During the scene where Iqra and Ash are sat alone in the Cafe, Peter enters and no surprise, Suki follows after a while. However as Iqra and Ash make themselves scares after Suki makes a comment on them staying up too late the night before, did anyone notice that she implied that she and Peter had slept together?! Peter orders himself a drink, to which to interrupts and offers to pay for it, telling him to enjoy his drink - to which she made a disgusting comment that she "Enjoyed" her time with him the previous night! Firstly - Ewwwww! - I don't know what your opinion is on Peter and Suki, but personally, I really don't like it! But I do have a feeling that Iqra is going to have another love interest soon! - The new girl at the Prince Albert - Mila! If she is going to become a regular character and we're going to see more of her, I think it would be nice to give her a storyline. We've already seen her beat Kim to win a job at the Albert, also seen her chatting up Frankie, and now she's been introduced to Iqra. What's not to say that Iqra and Mila begin get grow a close bond and eventually fall for one another? It would be nice to see Iqra in a happy relationship, as I feel right now, she's not happy with Ash. What do you guys think? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this possible theory?!
The second thing I want to talk about is the Carter's. Shirley is determined to find her little sister, much to Gray's frustration and panic. Before Mick arrives to accompany her to the police station regarding her attack on Katy, Shirley makes a call, which is later to be revealed as one of Tina's friends, as she desperately tries to search for her sister. As she does so, Gray is looking even more worried, for his own sake. He tries to convince her not to make any calls to Tina as it will makes things look bad on Tina as well as Shirley herself! Later when Shirley and Mick arrive back from the police station, they both inform Linda that Katy isn't going to press charges on Shirley for her attack. (Deep down I'm thinking it's because she doesn't want her own crimes being revealed!) But it's during this moment, when Mick and Linda begin to fret that Tina still hasn't been in touch with any of them, Shirley reveals to them that she actually received a text from Tina, informing them that she actually had attacked Ian. Instantly, things don't make sense to the Carter family, they believe that what the message is saying isn't true. But Mick makes the valid point that even if they don't believe it, they have no proof to show that she actually is innocent. It's then that Linda takes a huge gamble and requests to speak to Max. Since Linda ended their fling, Max has been down in the dumps and moping ever since. So when he gets a message from Linda asking that they talk, he goes round to her apartment when no one else is around. She informs Max that she's sorry for the way she treated him, but regardless of sticking by her husband, she does still care for him and treasures his friendship. But she then turns the subject onto more important matters and informs him that she's worried about Tina, even though that Tina has sent them a message almost admitting to attacking Ian, the only way to prove that it wasn't her was to give the police the weapon. Now we all know that the weapon used to attack Ian was the blue Lucy Beale Award, which Max ended up stealing and burying in an attempt to save Linda. The big thing here is, is that Linda is basically asking him to give up the weapon to put Tina out of the frame, but I don't think she realises that it could make Max look guilty of attacking Ian instead, and Max makes a very valid point here, even though he cares deeply for Linda, he refuses to go back to prison for anyone! Why should he also help her family after what's happened between him and Linda? I get Linda is just trying to help her family, but honestly - I think she needs to find another way, approaching Max is the wrong way to go about it. Â
Thirdly, let's talk about Martin and Ruby, shall we?! When we first see them, Martin appears to have gotten off the phone to, I'm assuming, Sonia or Bex, and he happily informs his wife that he's going to be going away to see his daughter. Ruby has a face like thunder, she is clearly unhappy and as soon as Martin tells her his plans, she has the audacity lie once again to him to reminding him that she's pregnant. I hate to say it but I loved the way Martin responded with "I didn't think I'd have to ask your permission to see my daughter!". Ruby states that since she's told her husband about her pregnancy, he hasn't shown her the slightest bit of interest, however Martin puts on a front saying that he's happy that she's carrying his child, but as he leaves the room, we can see that he still doesn't feel right about it. However, later on Martin bumps into Sharon with little Albie in the park. As they begin talking, Martin reveals to her that Ruby is pregnant, even though it wasn't planned. As she congratulates him, he questions how show manages to cope, knowing that her son Albie was born on the same day she lost her other son, and also happens to mention that he never thought he'd see the day when she and Ian would be married. It's at this point when Sharon has to put on a front and basically lies to Martin, informing that even though it wasn't the future or family that she had planned, somehow it works for her. Her words must play on Martin's mind though, as later, returning to Ruby, she's alone in the house and reaches for a bottle of wine from the shelf, only to be interrupted by the front door opening, she quickly puts it back. Martin enters and comes with a peace offering, he reveals he has bought some baby items such as a baby grow, little boots and a teddy and informs his wife that she'll make an incredible Mum. Ruby seems completely overwhelmed by his surprise baby gifts, but the realisation sinks in when she realises she has to pregnant fast, before Martin becomes suspicious! What on Earth will she do? Could she convince Martin to sleep with her? Or would she have to take extreme measures and get pregnant by somebody else?!
The next thing I want to talk about is Sheree and Patrick. Trying to avoid the situation which is happening with her husband, Sheree is keeping herself busy at the salon. Cleaning things making everything look absolutely spotless, regardless of the fact that her first client isn't due for a long while. Suddenly Stacey and Jean enter, announcing that it's Jean's birthday and she's eager to get rid of the dark eyebrows that Mo has applied for her. Sheree takes it upon herself to help Jean out and stating that she has all the time in the world to help her. During Jean's time in the salon, Kim steps in and confronts Sheree about not visiting Patrick in the hospital after his stroke, she states that if she doesn't step up she'll be disowned by family. Jean witnesses this confrontation and sees the devastating look in Sheree's eyes, she takes it upon herself to console the poor woman and informs her that families can be hard to talk to if they don't understand the upset and hurt you're feeling. It's then that Jean begins to tell Sheree all about Daniel and his aspect of life, regardless of knowing he was dying from cancer, he lived every day to the full and didn't let it get him down, he was strong and was right up until the very end. I believe it's these words which really hit home for Sheree, after Jean's wise words, she rushes to the hospital to be at her husbands bedside. Meanwhile poor Patrick has been asking Isaac for his wife, even questioning why he's there when she should be at school - however what Isaac says really moves me, "I have to be here for my Dad!" - Is this the first time he ever called Patrick "Dad"? Even so, it was so moving, the look in both of their eyes was so warm. Eventually Sheree arrives at the hospital, Patrick is happy to see her but also informs her that he doesn't want her to be his carer, as that was not what she signed up for when they got married - however, Sheree informs her husband that she won't be going anywhere, she's going to remain at his side during this knock back in his health, but informs him that he will be taking all the medication he needs and following the doctors instructions.
Now, I've mentioned her already but I need to talk about Jean, we need to talk about Jean. I've said it before and I've said it again, what an absolutely inspirational woman! Regardless of coming to terms with her own personal situation, she's still wanting to help out everyone around her, previously it was Dotty and Iqra, today it was Sheree. I have to be honest, I absolutely LOVED the fact that she talked about Daniel again, even though he was such a small part of the soap, his role was very very important and he plays such a huge part in Jean's life, we need to make sure he's not forgotten, and Jean continuing to talk about him is just perfect, even if it is quite sad. After getting her eyebrows fixed and getting dressed up in another gorgeous dress (She's been wearing some stunning dresses recently!) she begins to record a video of herself. At first, I know it sounds silly, but I genuinely thought she was doing a video for Daniel, even though he wouldn't be able to see it, I just thought it would've been a way for her to still kind of talk to him, if you get what I mean? But as she continued the video and talking to the camera, I think it became clear that the video she was recording is actually intended for Stacey and the rest of the family. In the video, she announces that devastatingly that she feels in herself that the cancer has returned, even though she hasn't had it confirmed, she can feel it. Not only does she announce this but she also states that she's taken the drastic decision not to have treatment this time around, she wants to live the rest of her life to the full and be just like Daniel. She doesn't want the family to worry and to accept her decision. I did find this very emotional to watch, I mentioned this in my previous post but I can't applaud Gillian Wright enough for her performance as Jean, she is absolutely incredible actress. The only thing that plays on my mind though however is that, I would be incredibly devastated if they were to kill her off. Jean has been such a breath of fresh air in EastEnders, even during her absolute lowest moments, everyone loves her and wants her to fight through the toughest times. I truly believe that the Slater family will be lost without her, the whole Square would be lost without Jean - Oh I love her so much!
I know there are plenty of storylines happening at the moment, and with the recent trailer which has been released, I can't wait to see it all unfold. But Jean's storyline is the one that really going to keep me guessing the most I think, I hope to God that her cancer hasn't returned, or maybe it's something completely different and not cancer - (I don't know?) - But either way, I just hope Jean will be okay and EastEnders don't kill her off! What do you guys think? How do you feel about Jean's current story? Are there any storylines that are keeping you gripped at this moment in time, how do you feel about them all and what are your thoughts and theories?! I'd love to hear what you have to say, please feel free to leave me a message or a comment, I'll always respond! Thanks again folks! Enjoy the rest of your weekend and I'll be back very soon! Love you all xXx

Between the Shadow and the Soul
Chapter 11
âYou turned cloak so many times in that war, I wonder if your husband knows how cheap your loyalty is.â he says as if heâs caught her, but even if he spent his life trying to find Tommy's weakness, he wouldnât find it with her.
Eva knew he would follow her there. A park bench while she reads a book about poetry. People used to give her looks, some good some bad, but it was those types of looks that reminded you where the Americans got their racism, like meeting the asshole parent of an asshole child. But that changed when Tommy noticed her, everyone feared him and it was in their best interest that Eva Shelby, nee Smith, was treated as if her skin was as pale as her husbandâs.
Irene O'Donnell eyed her with intrigue while Donnal Henry eyed her like she was dog shit on his boot. Campbell looks at her like she was put on this earth to make his life miserable.
Eva hates ineptitude just as much as she hates the idea of sharing her husband.
âI was a spy for the rebels, sir, a much better one than Grace seeing I fooled everyone into thinking that. Do you know how easy it was for me to expose her?â Eva loathes Grace, not only because somehow the insipid little cunt managed to creep in like the snake she is, but also because she was just so fucking awful at her job. Had she been a spy in Mexico she wouldnât have lasted ten minutes. "Two conversations with her and your god-awful idea to meet in the cemetery where everyone can see you, and by the next day I had told Polly and Thomas what Iâd seen.â
âShe served her purpose well enough.â He said angry that a foreign witch was the one who helped Thomas Shelby evade justice.
âAnd then killed when you refused to give up your chastity to the general you served, an admirable thing, you were a girl of twenty all alone.â he says as if the majority of Mexico wasnât composed of Catholics.
âDid you know I was given a gray filly just like the one my husband bought recently for my services by Pancho Villa?â Eva is not one to brag about her time in Villaâs army ---after its inglorious end who can really--- but Campbell is an exception. Its burns him that a twenty-six-year-old housewife has done more for her country than he has for his. Although an Irishman on the side of his peopleâs oppressors must have no pride. âYou see I sounded so American by the time I finished boarding school, no one could tell I was from Mexico. Except for my coloring, obviously.â
âShame Grace couldnât keep her legs closed, not a very good Protestant girl, was she? Should have seen how eager she was to jump in his bed, all of Small Heath knew she was whore by then, flirting with both Arthur and Thomas.â Although who could blame Grace, Tommy was great in bed ---if a little tame. Linda seemed to be really enjoying Arthurâs bed, going by her blushes, even if she has to step into the Sodom and Gomorrah that is the Eden Club.
âThis isnât about Mrs. Macmillian, Mrs. Shelby.â Normally Eva is above calling women sluts and whores for having sex, but it hurts Campbell to have Grace be slandered so.
âYou know Iâve seen your death in the cards, let's just say if you thought being shot by a woman was embarrassing, imagine being killed by one.â Eva never plans on letting him get to the point, she could talk the ears off a person if she set her mind to it.
âAre you threatening me, Mrs. Shelby?â he says tensing and Eva simply shrugs.
âNo, I donât need to threaten people, I simply tell them what the Universe has said to me, you see, Major, I am a witch cursed to see the future.â her voice is barely above a whisper, low and sweet like poison made with honey. âThink of me as Cassandra of Troy, cursed with prophecies that will never be believed.â
--
âYou can hardly tell youâre pregnant, you know.
Iâm scared of dying like my sister or the baby dying, but it's stupid because the universe has shown me this little one will have three younger sisters.â Eva touches her stomach as if to assure herself that she wonât die like Felicidad did.
âIf Tommy is anything like John, those girls of yours will be spoiled rotten. He already bought Katie earrings because he didnât want her to feel left out when he got Daisy some for her birthday.â Esme says with a laugh. If youâd look at her with Katie, Johnny, Daisy and Robbie youâd think sheâd birthed them with how much they loved her and she loved them. Even Daisy who was thinking herself grown at ten and would be unbearable in her teenage years.
âI just know he will.â Eva gets the sudden feeling of someone walking up to the betting shop, a woman sheâs heard about, but has never met. âIâll get the door; I think we are about to have an unexpected guest.â
May Carleton was beautiful, in that English heiress type of way. Stunning woman really and ironically both Eva and Tommyâs type. If Eva wasnât married, sheâd definitely try and see if she could get anywhere with her. âI have an appointment with Mr. Thomas Shelby.â
No hello, no may I come in, nothing is even politely asked and she enters in a way Eva can only describe as Hernan Cortes entering Tenochtitlan already planning how heâs going to oust Moctezuma.
âMay Carleton,â May extends her hand to Eva, but Eva eyes it with suspicion. Tommy had told her about her flirting with him ---unfortunately he played dumb when she asked about Graceâs letters, so thatâs going to end badly--- and the way she came in here like a colonizer feels a little insulting.
âHe usually takes appointments at his proper office.â Eva says wondering how to politely kick her out. She can bet Moctezuma had similar thoughts on how to shake off the Spanish.
âThis was the address he gave me.â May drops her hand, feeling the sting. Eva was being rude, but why the hell May Carleton think anyone would be nice to her here.
âHe gave you this address?â Esme asks standing by Eva in what can only be seen as solidarity.
âHe said this was a gambling den. Anyway, he said, I could, uhm, take a look.â
Esme looks at May with incredulity and Eva has that try me bitch look she perfected when she was sixteen and Oneida Villareal Diaz tried to make her life a living hell. Probably likes tonic water too.
Eva already hates her and it's not even about May setting her sights on her charming criminal of a husband.
âAnd now I feel like a bit of an idiot, because Iâm early and heâs late and I have no idea how to behave.â she says almost nervously.
âIn a Gambling Den?â Esme doesnât take kindly to being a spectacle for a rich white woman to enjoy.
âI'll go wait in the car.â May has the decency to appear apologetic, not that it would save her. The Lees are famous for their resentment.
âOh, you donât have to. She hates Swan Lake, but boy does she love revenge.
âSo, what brings you here, Miss Carleton?" Eva asks in that sweet polite manner of hers that she uses on strangers.
âI am going to train his racehorse, for Epsom.â she says still taking everything in, reminding Eva about how Oneida looked at the offices by the port and how surprised she was to see how well off the Smith Rileys lived. After all they did benefit from the Porfiriato up until the Americans destroyed their ships.
âYou know horses?â Esme asks as if she didnât believe posh Miss Carelton was a horse trainer.
âYes, you?â May asks and now Eva wonders if she judged May wrong.
âBorn riding. Slept in a manger when I was a baby.â Esme answers, a softness about her face when she recalls her childhood.
John comes in, complaining about Mayâs car. And Tommy comes in just as John assumes Eva is feeling threatened by the beautiful heiress.
âSorry Iâm late,â he clears his throat and John backs down. âThere was a business matter.â he doesnât kiss Evaâs cheek like he always does and that just annoys her more. He orders for Esme and John to keep the place locked for a while and Eva wonders if she is supposed to cockblock them to prevent May Carleton from getting the idea Tommy is unattached, or leave in a huff before she does something immature like trip her. She trusts her husband, but she doesnât trust Carelton to keep Carelton to keep her lily-white hands off her man.
---
âYou hate her, donât you?â he asks knowing the answer to his question. Lucky for Eva they have the house for themselves since Finn likes spending the night at Pollyâs because he misses her and Arthur has gotten a place in London above the Eden Club.
âI donât know her enough to hate her, but the impression she has given me leaves her in the same spot as the girls who made my life hell in boarding school. Walked into the betting shop like a fucking colonizer.â Eva groaned and he laughs at her choice of words. She may be more Irish than Nahua, but she was raised to know colonialism is evil and how it looks. Every foreign country owned and enslaved mexicans with their factories in Mexico these days. âDid she drink Tonic Water? The bitchy rich girls always drank that.â
âYou drink it too, love.â he points out and once again Eva finds herself forgetting sheâs a little angry at him. Here acting like everything is fine while cleaning up after dinner. Him being playful with her and reminding her how horny pregnancy has made her.
âDonât do that.â she says reminding herself it's now or never.
âDo what, Evie?â he asks bracing himself for the inevitable fight they are hurdling to.
âThat thing you do where you make me forget that I am actually pretty fucking mad at you, Tommy.â she says angrily. âI know about those letters Grace has written to you and to top it all off, you didnât even bother correcting Carleton when she assumed you were unmarried today.â
If Tommy thought her pretty when she was mad, sheâd look fucking gorgeous tonight.

Notes:
First things first, only Katie, who I assume is the younger daughter since she is still peeing the bed in season 1, is named. I gave them names here. In order they are: Daisy, Robert (robbie), John Jr (Johnny) and Katie. the baby Esme had between seasons is named Daniel Owen after Danny Whizz Bang who gets killed by Billy Kimber in season 1.
May Carleton in her first appearance gave me white rich girl vibes, didn't dislike her as much as i dislike Grace ---who I just think sucks as a charcter, spy , but excels as a ghost--- or Tatiana ---who is just an awful person and kinda annoying.

Starshine Ch.50 Jimmy Page Fan Fiction
The four hikers, Jill, Jim, Percy and Linda, set out for the trail they heard about earlier in the evening. Autumn leaves are particularly magnificent when viewed around sundown. The sideways approaching sunlight turns the colors more intense and brilliant. So, the four began the trail, and the views were incredible. Glimpses of the sparkling lakes could be seen from the higher points in the hills of the grounds.
Jimmy was still a little out of sorts following his dangerous fall into the deep water earlier. Jill was also still a bit shook over it. But, the cool crisp air and the

outdoorsy walking adventure did well to take their minds off it. After only a quarter mile, they had to cross a long bridge over a stream. It was rickety, but no holes nor worn through areas. After they spanned it, they traveled through many interesting little paths and wooden staircases through the forest. Watching carefully for the reflectors nailed to the trees, indicating their path. Jimmy had his arm around Jillâs waist. Holding her near to him, as an unconscious attempt to keep her safe.
They were talking, laughing and so involved in the gorgeous foliage and sights, no one was keeping track of the time nor how much daylight remained for them to get back to the castle. The darkness approached them rather suddenly, it seemed. A couple of them had flashlights, and those came to some good use now. So immediately, then turned around and headed back. The

sky was clear, plenty of clarity for the stars. Also the full moon was a big help. However, a lot of mist and fogginess occupied the forest and the entire low ground. It occurred especially this time of evening, after sundown. The air was getting colder and damp and uncomfortable. Jim was beginning to regret allowing Percy to persuade them onto the scenic hike. They knew that a long bridge was located near the end of this trail. Once they crossed it, they knew only about another quarter mile remained to the doors of the castle. The visibility was not so great anymore. Soon, the entrance for the bridge began to come into focus. And, strangely, a lantern light was seen ahead also, just at the head of the bridge. The closer they got, the more they could see that there was a person there as well. He was holding the lit lantern. Upon standing right in front of him, they observed an older man, approximately 80 yrs old. Wearing a grey heavy raincoat and boots, similar to garb a seaman might wear. Heavy gray beard and mustache he wore. He greeted them, rather unemotionally, but kindly nonetheless. âIâm Zach Griffins. Outdoor groundskeeper for the castle. Here to escort you with a light across the bridge this fine evening. Help ya ta see a bit better with this light. Where are you all from ?â
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/74802e357f52d5fc90a020a6171e01ab/cca07e7e37df69cd-dc/s540x810/2778b77a67beae21e8dc56b381617aeb933e13a9.jpg)
Percy of course spoke up, âWeâre here from London, just enjoying the great outdoors and seeking some R and R. Ya know. And thanks, weâd love an escort, for the long trail across the bridge. â
Zach spoke, and walked slowly, in regard to his age, most probably. He hobbled a little as he moved. Holding his lantern high. âIâm an old sailor ya know. Sailed upon many ships during the nineteen twenties. Long long ago. Lived in this castle for a while during my thirties and it was grand then. Had a family, they be all gone now. Iâm the last of my line. Itâs sad.â
Jill spoke, âHow do you feel about the renovations in the castle ? The modern stuff, I mean ?â
Zach, âAh, the new stuff. Well, I didnât particularly see the need for it. Things were fine, a little broken down, but still usable before the newer fangled stuff was brought in. But, Iâm not one who likes change, ya see.âÂ
Jill, â Understandable. But it sure has plenty of old world flavor and charm in it still. Weâre really enjoying our stay here.â
Zach said, in his scratchy voice and old Irish brogue, âWell then, good for you all then. By the way, for your enjoyment. Iâll give ya a great tip. Thereâs a special kind of treat the chef used to make. It was blueberry scone. The best Iâd ever tried. Tell your chef or your waiter I guess, that you must have a blueberry scone, people. Itâll be the highlight of your stay, I promise ya. Tell him old Zach recommended them. Theyâll remember. T'was my favorite.âÂ
As they all stepped off the end of the bridge, Jimmy and Percy each shook the old sailorâs hand and thanked him genuinely for his assistance and they all wished each other a wonderful night. The group walked a few yards, and Jill turned to give old Zach one last wave and a smile. But⌠she stopped dead cold in her tracks. Speaking loudly, she cried out, âWhere is he ? Where did he go ? â The rest of them turned around as well, and sure as dust, he was gone. No sign of him. Nor the lantern. They called out for him, but no response, nor the lantern light came about. All 4 looked intensely at each other, wide eyed. Then began to run toward the castle, a quarter mile away.Â
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/beac4aea0ff58013caa16fc7de0008b6/cca07e7e37df69cd-70/s540x810/a4852b9d22cc7a01327cf554befc8872810815ff.jpg)
Once they arrived through the front doors, they immediately sought out Gary, their original tour guide. Percy saw him through a bunch of guests, and began.Â
Percy : Gary ! We need you ! Some bizarre incidents took place.
Gary : Ah yes, Mr. Plant, Mr. Page. How may I be of help ?
Percy : Well, just returned from a hike through the trail path you recommended.Â
Gary : Oh ? Rather late for a hike, since itâs dark out now. But, go on.
Percy : Something odd took place. Out by the long bridge.
Gary :Â Like what ?
Percy : We met an old sailor out there, who works here as groundskeeper. He was leaning against the edge of the railing, holding a lantern and offered to light our way as we crossed over. Old Zach he called himself. He came to us at the start of that bridge nearby and walked us across to light our way. But when we turned to wave to him, there was no one there. No one !! He gave a last name as well, anyone remember it ?
Jim : yeah, Griffins.
Gary : Oh my goodness. You just gave me a chill through my body !!
Percy : Why ?
Gary : Youâll see why. Just follow me. To the wall of legacy photos. Youâll see.Â

The Druid Problem
The mists surrounded the nightmares as the party rode through the Border Ethereal. The world of Barovia appeared as only ghostly echoes of itself... the trees were frosty pale, the land was a drowned blue... the night sky was black and starless...Â
At Rukiâs command, the nightmares returned to Barovia proper and landed at the outskirts of a great vineyard.Â
A light drizzle began to fall. Unpainted fences blindly followed a northward trail, which skirted the edge of the sprawling vineyard. In the middle of it all was a stately building, fog swirling around its eastern side. Scattered about were rope-handled half-barrels used for hauling grapes.
At the edge of the property, there was a man wearing a dark cloak and cowl, hunched over at the treeline.Â
Linda felt unease. She looked to the fog beyond and swore that she saw ghostly images there. She collected herself and dismounted the nightmare. Everyone followed her lead and approached the cloaked man.
They walked through the mud toward the man. Strahd shifted his tiny bat form and scurried into Rukiâs pack to hide himself.Â
The man was not alone. Others appeared to be hiding in the woods near him. Three men, a woman... four children...
What has happened here? thought Aric.
The cloaked man became aware of their approach and drew back his cowl to look upon them. His face was weathered with age and tiredness, and his hair was gray and wiry. His beard was trimmed close to his face.Â
He spoke in a gruff voice, "Sorry kids. Winery's closed. Semi-permanently."
Linda blinked in confusion, âIâm not a child.â
The old man squinted at her and huffed, "Heh? Yer not? Well it don't matter. If yer lookin' for free samples or for any deliveries- gotta break it to ya- We're closed. Unless you can help us with our lil'... ahem-â he coughed, â... druid problem."
"Druid problem?" Linda echoed questioningly.
Jeeves and Aric exchanged glances. Ruki raised a brow.
The old man nodded, "Yes'm. Druids. Damn hillbillies came in and made a wreck of the place!â
He gestured angrily, âNow, I can't pick my grapes, can't run my mill, can't make my bottles, can't make my labels... and can't tend my wines. Bastards don't seem to be leavin' any time soon either."Â
He huffed, "We've just been campin' in the meanwhile. I ain't gon' to Vallaki. And I ain't gon' to Krezk."
Linda looked to the rest of her teammates and looked back to the curmudgeon, "I guess we can help with that. Urwin sent us to see what was happening since he hadn't heard from you."
The man stamped his cane into the ground, "Urwin?! Urwin?! My good for nothin', lazy, shirkin' son Urwin? Who got his father into this mess to begin with? HAH! That's a laugh right there!"
He cackled and stamped his cane in the ground, twisting it. One of the children began to cry.
The old man steadied himself and faced them, sternly, "Alright. You help us with the damn hillbillies. And I'll let ya know... to let Urwin know... how his family he abandoned is."
Linda looked to Aric, unsure of how to handle the old man.
Aric simply bowed his head in a polite manner, "That sounds reasonable, any idea how many druids there are?"
"Four," he replied, but held up a pointer finger, "But just 'cause there ain't a lot, don't mean nothin'. Those druids are crafty. Got their nature magics."Â
The man wiggled his fingers to accentuate the fact.
Linda turned to the vineyard, shaking her head, "Let's get to it then."
Linda stepped forth cautiously, trudging down the muddy path toward the stately building. Her party followed behind her in the same manner.
Rain began to pour more heavily, beating down on the ground and splashing mud on their boots... but the mist did not dissipate. It was ever present, no matter what, it seemed.
They came closer to the building... It was old, and made of stone, with several piles of vines laying about the house...
There was a noise in the fog. Aric turned to face it, ready for attack, but was stunned to see a Calishite man of middle age, well-groomed, wearing the red royal trappings, the marks of a general...
Father?Â
There was no doubting that it was Prince Zasheir. He stared at Aric, disapprovingly, speaking in a harsh, but detached voice, "You had so much potential... you cannot recover from this disgrace. As you know, my favor, once lost... is lost forever..."
Aric blinked. When he opened his eyes, the image was gone. A hallucination? Or an illusion? He looked to Jeeves, but Jeeves didnât seem to react.
Linda heard the noise as well, and drew her revolver to prep. She leveled it at the fog, but when the mists parted, she nearly dropped her weapon... That rugged man, in full leather battle array... that crossbow, that hat... No mistake...
It was John, smirking at her the way he used to. He spoke tiredly, "What's taken you so long partner? I've been dyin' to finally rest..."
"I...â Linda began, but stopped. Mists took the image away. She shook her head. The mists were messing with her.Â
Ruki paused and turned to look in the fog as everyone else had done. She narrowed her eyes at the image it showed her: A Vistani woman, roughly her age... her height... her build... wearing her armor...
No, it was her. Another version, it seemed. She gripped her staff as the image spoke with Rukiâs own voice:
"I wonder how life could have been... if mother hadn't died... and if we hadn't been cursed by devil magic so..."
There is no way to know that. Do not dwell on this now... She told herself as the image faded.
The vines twisted and crackled around them. Slithering together to form small, humanoid shapes. Hissing and crackling sounds emanated from the figures, and their needle-y appendages lashed out toward them.
Ruki gripped her staff and stepped forward, in front of Jeeves. Channeling her psychic energy, she blasted them.
Weak foes... All in front of her collapsed into vines. But there were more coming... An entire horde.
Strahd crawled out of Rukiâs pack, alerted to the danger. He blinked as he saw the vine-y constructs and flew into the air...Â
He circled about the manor and observed. There were groups of the things coming from inside and from around the back of the house. He reached out to Ruki:Â
âPrepare, there are more coming. Iâll call aid...â
Strahd extended his senses deep into the land around him, and smiled inwardly. Yes, that should do it...
Come to me, little ones...
Ruki acknowledged Strahd and warned her companions, âMore incoming!â
Aric snapped out of his uncertainty, and gripped on the Sunsword. The blade of light sprung forth, illuminating the slithering vine creatures. Aric rushed forward and cut down one of the creatures.
Linda readied her gun, trigger happy from the illusion she saw. Bam! Bam! Bam!
Three of the monsters fell. She reloaded as more emerged from the mists... and even more started barreling out of the front door.
Linda stepped back, Iâm gonna need more bullets...
Four of the little creatures slithered close to Aric, raising their clawed appendages and swiping. Aric moved defensively, but bit back tears as he felt stinging in his skin from where one of them managed to pierce his leg.
Linda backed up from the creatures swarming her, but they leaped on to her and batted at her arms and legs, tearing into her skin...
Thwack! Ruki batted away a few with her staff, but one of the vine creatures flanked behind her and swiped at calf, throwing her off guard...
Thumping in the air disturbed the field of battle. The vine creatures paused, and Linda looked up... several dark, small shapes blotted out the moonlight peering through the rain and fell on the creatures-
Hundreds of tiny bats began to swarm and pick at the vine creatures.
Jeeves took advantage of the new distraction and quickly cut down two of the vine creatures as the bats began to rip the vines to shreds.Â
Ruki wheeled around and pounded her staff on the nearest construct, smashing it to smithereens.Â
Strahd flew up and joined one of the swarms of bats, and allowed himself to be taken by the frenzy. The swarms moved and fell down upon the needle blights, and tore vines from the forms.
A hot rage tore through Aric at the constant attacks in this country. He felt the rage burn within him and channeled the energy of his fire-genasi soul. He outstretched his hands as a spark ignited into a cone of flame that extended from him.
Enough of this!
He watched as the blights stopped their advance to him, and reeled back as his flames turned the vines into charcoal. They held their position, frozen for a brief moment, before the rain caused their small forms to collapse, coal dust scattering in the mud.
Linda fired twice at the little buggers, picking off a few as she maneuvered herself... but they just kept coming. She watched as a few more swarmed out of the winery towards her...
Damn annoying.
She and Aric braced themselves and protected their faces as the little creatures launched at them.
Jeeves readied his crossbow and fired at the blights.
Rukiâs eyes flashed and she balled her hand into a fist- channeling her power to crush the vine blights... She watched in satisfaction when all but one before her shriveled into a pile of vines and leaves. She raised her staff and smashed the last one standing for good measure.
Once more, the bats swarmed, and tore through the remaining blights... Aric swung the Sunsword, burning the little blights, and Linda took aim at the last one rushing them-
BANG!
It fell. More movement from within-
She aimed at the doorway-
And paused. Now, there were more of the little creatures, but accompanied by people wearing animal pelts, and wearing headdresses of various animal skulls. The blights seemed on edge, as did these people...
They must be druids... thought Linda.
âWhat is the meaning of this?â cried a woman with a black fur cloak, and a ceremonial headdress of a stag skull.
Linda gestured with her revolver, âYour needle things attacked us."
The druids, four in total, spoke to each other in a language that the party didnât quite understand. One of the druids fiddled with a staff and tapped it against his hand confusedly.Â
The woman who called out to them initially stepped forth, âThese bats...â she lowered her voice, âIs Lord Strahd among us?â
The bats all landed around them. Perching in the trees, on the fences, in the house... Their eyes glowed red in the night and a low rumble permeated the air.
âWho wishes to know, and why?â Strahdâs voice emanated from the tiny creatures... and it seemed like the land itself.
A chill cut through everyone. The druids appeared startled as they looked around.
Once more, the woman spoke, her voice wavering, "Apologies, Lord of Land.We are the druids of Clan Kavan-Terran. The Archdruid wished us to pay back the wereravens here for their trespass, and for their attack on our grove. But since we have the Lord's attention...â
She paused, âThe Archdruid would like for you to come to Yester Hill. There is something... you need there."
Linda blinked, What would Strahd need from Yester Hill?
The bats swarmed together and departed the winery, fluttering as a large, black cloud in the night.
Strahd himself appeared before the druids, seemingly out of nowhere. The druids took knee, humbly, with their vine creatures mimicking the gesture.
"Indeed?â Strahd questioned, âYou say the Martikovs attacked your grove? Whatever for? And what is this... something... you speak of?"
The woman spoke, "The Martikovs hoarded a gem of life, we discovered it here, and sought to use the power to restore the grove- to find some way to heal the Land...â She let bitterness into her voice, âThe Martikovs assaulted our grove as we were trying to restore life to our Guardian. This was payback. As for the something...â
She briefly looked to the vampire, but turned away, âThe Archdruid was very... quiet about its nature."
Linda folded her arms, and asked, "What were you doing inside?"
The druids were hesitant speaking, but finally one of the men spoke up:
"They tried to poison our efforts for restoring the lifeblood of our grove... so we poisoned the lifeblood of this building... well, only one of them..."
Strahd pinched the bridge of his nose, patience wearing thin. âYou poisoned... the wine?â All traces of amusement vanished from his voice.
The druids shifted uncomfortably.
Strahd folded his hands behind his back, and faced the druids, "Well... that is another thing that has to be handled, then. I can't have my people being poisoned and dropping dead...â
He tilted his head, adding a warning tone to his voice, âThe only reason you are still alive is because no one has been injured by it, and I am curious. But that is a rather thin line to be on..."
"Today, I am merciful,â he gestured to the woods, eyes flashing red, âBegone before I change my mind."
They didnât need to be told twice. The druids shifted into a motley assortment of animals... a stag, a bear, a badger, and a hawk before retreating into the forests, their blights following them.
Strahd took a moment to calm himself before walking over to Jeeves. He spoke to the manservant, "If I recall, you had an affinity for poison..."
Jeeves looked to Aric, uncertainly, before answering, âMaybe so...â
Strahd steepled his fingers, leveling his gaze with Jeeves, âDo you mind figuring out for me... which one of these... is the poisoned one?â
âIâll have to consult Lord Aric first,â Jeeves answered, âMy service is to him, and him alone.â
Strahd tiredly and dismissively made a gesture before turning to the door of the winery. âVery well. Letâs go inside in the meantime. The rain is wretched...â
Everyone nodded their heads in agreement, and shuffled through the vines, mud and ash to retreat indoors.

Wild Woodyâs Campground and Amazing Antique Stores (Laurel Springs, NC)
Situated on Highway 18 just off the Blue Ridge Parkway exists a blast from the past in the form of an eclectic campground and antique store located in the remote community of Laurel Springs, NC. Surrounded by lush evergreens and rolling hills, Wild Woodys transports its visitors back to a time of simplicity and carefree splendor--to a place undisturbed by smart phones, cable TV, and other man-made interruptions.Â
As I pull into the driveway my eyes are met by brightly-colored handmade signs advertising Vintage Campers for rent, all unique with themes ranging from Coca-cola to Hanna Barbera cartoon dogs. 500 yards to my East, rows upon rows of shiny motorcycles sit proudly outside the entrance to Freeborneâs (the neighboring motel that dates back to the early 1950â˛s). An old jeep outfitted with longhorn steer antlers and a giant American flag pulls up and blares its âI wish I was in Dixieâs landâ horn. Its driver, a red-faced man with a long gray ponytail sticks his head out the window and yells, âYah-ooooooo!âÂ
I enter the first antique store, previously a Phillips 66 gas station that was later sold to Gulf Oil. Having grown up with a mother who made me traipse through nearly every antique store located along the greater Carolinian coast, I had never before observed anything quite like this--endless arrays of nostalgia ranging from Old Hollywood movie posters, vinyl records and cassette tapes from every decade and every genre imaginable, vintage clothing varying from 1920's era wedding gowns to 1970's macrame vests, leather cowboy boots, and faded Leviâs. Collectible figurines including porcelain dolls and G.I. Joes, framed tintypes depicting early 20th century gypsies, props from famous movie sets, decked-out mannequin heads and dummies posed in situational circumstances, furniture ranging from Victorian loveseats to Civil War era pianos--all arranged with care and tucked in amongst themed rooms, decorated walls, and souvenir-lined ceilings. As I navigate the never-ending maze of mingled relics, it becomes increasingly apparent to me that Wild Woodys is more a journey than it is a destination.
I begin to wonder who the mastermind is behind all of this and am then introduced to âBlondie,â the owner of forty-eight years. Blondie (real name Linda Woody) is a friendly and well-seasoned woman with long-flowing platinum-blonde hair, hazel eyes trimmed in black eyeliner and false eyelashes, dressed in a short-sleeved button down cotton shirt and cut-off denim shorts. She is part of twelve generations dating back to 1738 that âcame over the pondâ from Scotland, Ireland, and England where they settled in Ashe County on land they purchased for 3 and 1/2 cents an acre. Originally owned by her cousin Rand Osbourne from 1946 to 1969, Wild Woodys began its life as a diner, general store, and the aforementioned gas station. Lindaâs brother Ken Woody bought it from Rand in 1969 and after two years sold it to Linda in 1971.
In talking with Linda she reveals to me one of her best historical events--becoming a great-grandmother. The gentle laugh lines and crows feet carved gingerly in her face cause my forehead to furrow. âYou donât look near old enough to be a great grandmother,â I tell her.
She lifts her hand to her heart and tilts her head, âWell thank you. Sheâs thirteen! Iâm hoping to see if she will take an interest to the store. So far sheâs only interested in two things here--the ice-cream and the doll figurines.â
As I turn my focus back towards the expanse of relics, it is all I can do but speculate how much insurance Blondie must have on this extraordinary museum and tribute to Americana. AÂ heaven for âPickersâ and a nightmare for the Bourgie, it is said that people, upon entrance, either remain for hours or immediately run for the door.Â
Before I myself begin to head out the door (about an hour and a half past my arrival time) I ask Linda the one question I had been wanting to ask all along. âWhere on earth do you find all these things?!?â
Her hazel eyes narrow as a smile begins to spread across her rose-colored cheeks. âWell,â the back of her right index finger pressed to her bottom lip, âWhy here of course!âÂ

Whumptober Day 27
Prompt:Â âI canât walkâ Fandom: Young Justice Characters: Bart Allen, Wally West Words: 2407 Warnings: graphic injury, more than canon typical violence
The strange, geometrically structured hallways of the Reachâs central Earth base tended to twist in on themselves and loop around until you were right back where you started when you first entered the building if you werenât paying very close attention to your surroundings.
Bart had been paying very close attention for the past thirty minutes, but it was pretty clear to him that if he hadnât had Helenaâs voice calmly chattering in his ear, he would have been lost five minutes into his trek.
âI think I finally found the elevator that should have been on the east side,â he whispered quietly into his comm, cautiously using one hand to phase through and break the activation panel beside the only door in the hallway that didnât line up perfectly with a corresponding one on the opposite wall. Sure enough, as it slid open, he could very clearly see an open, empty shaft that went far off into darkness both above and below him. The abyss yawned below him, the occasional flicker of light from a wall circuit doing nothing to stop the unease pooling in his gut.
Heâd found it, but it had taken an extra twenty minutes the Outlaws didnât technically have. Things would have been a lot simpler if the Reach could design their bases less like giant hives and more like actual buildings.
But there would be time for complaining about mazes later.
âGood work. Doctor Light and Nightwing are in position along with Red Hood and Red Arrow,â Helena told him, sounding far calmer than Bart himself felt. His pseudo-sisterâs training as Robin still served her well, nearly a decade after sheâd been forced to leave the name behind. Bart heard her type a few keys on a holographic keyboard, and the display in his goggles zoomed in on the not-very-accurate minimap heâd been following since heâd arrived. The small, flickering signal heâd been searching for briefly lit a point on the map green instead of red. âFlashâs signal seems to be coming from about thirteen floors below you. Youâll have to be extremely careful; if that was the floor where theyâve been holding him, then itâs likely they have traps specifically designed for speedsters down there. Go slow, and keep an eye out for anything.â
Bart grimaced at the thought of going even slower than he already was, but didnât try to protest. Heâd seen what the Reach was capable of when they wanted to restrain a metahuman, and he wasnât exactly eager to experience that himself. âSure thing, boss. Anything else?â
He readied the small grappling hook stashed in one of his hidden cupboards as Helena sighed quietly. âYouâll be going pretty deep underground, so itâs very likely our comms wonât reach each other until you come back up. If you do need help, hit your emergency signal and get as high up as you can. Donât worry; Iâll be heading to the main cellblock with Arsenal, so it shouldnât take me long to get there.â
Bart couldnât quite help a smile, even as he prepared to descend directly into the belly of the beast. âI know youâve always got my back, so why would I be worried?â
The surprised chuckle he heard just made his smile grow wider. âJust try not to die before I get there, okay?â Helenaâs voice took on a softer tone. âGood luck, Bart.â
âIâll certainly try to find some,â Bart said with false cheer. Some good luck would be really nice right about now; he hadnât had nearly enough of it, lately. âYou be careful too.â
With that final farewell, Bart deployed the grapple and jumped into the void, rappelling down into the darkness of the Reach base.
-
This is not the first time heâs ever seen the deeper parts of an alien hive.
Many of the human labor force captured and used by the Reach to collect scrap and haphazardly throw together some semblance of working technology that could be useful to the Empire had been forced to carry their meager offerings from the camps all the way into the nearest mining colony, sometimes miles away from where they lived and often so quickly they collapsed on emaciated legs before they could even get there and back to where they were relatively safe.
Bart has been in and out of colonies and camps since he was nine years old, but the sheer size and complexity of this base is almost overwhelming. Heâs never been on one of the science floors before, never seen the terrifying instruments of torture and dissection heâs catching glimpses of through broken doors and cracked windows, and the shapes of them in the gloom are making the hair on his neck stand on end.
His comm signal had fizzled out like Helena said it might, but his gogglesâ HUD is still working, pinging helpfully off of disabled cameras and giving the already darker, dimly lit corridors some nice, eerie lighting to go along with the shattered security droids and debris littered throughout.
Not a cozy place, by any stretch of the imagination.
It looked as if some sort of hurricane had swept through.
It looked, Bart noted grimly, like a rather angry speedster had ripped through here. Heâs never met Wally or his children before, but Bart knows Jai is capable of super-strength when he diverts his speedforce connection into growing the muscles in his arms rather than distributing it throughout his entire body. Bart doesnât know if Wally or Irey are capable of the same thing, but as he watches the remains of one drone spark and fizzle spastically, he starts to think that might just be the case.
âAw, geez. Helenaâs family is scary. Maybe thatâs where she gets it from?â He canât quite keep from running his mouth, even down here in a potentially life-threatening situation. Damian would probably scold him for that if he could hear him.
The sharp crash of glass hitting the ground makes Bart zoom to one side of the hall, ducking into an empty doorframe. Itâs incredibly thin, not proper cover at all, but itâs all he has at the moment.
He peeks around it, tense like spring, ready for anything to appear out of the darkness, but nothing comes charging out into the open, no new security bots start flooding the corridor.
The sound of glass sliding across metal, and a weak, muffled voice; cursing in English, not the strange, inhuman clicking of the Reach.
Wally, or Jai or Irey? Another Reach prisoner, also used for experimentation? Or a trap?
The haunted atmosphere of this lab is already making Bart paranoid, but his training with Damian is giving him even more of an edge than normal. His stomach churns in protest, but he heads forward anyway. Waiting around in enemy territory never tended to end well, in Bartâs experience.
He tiptoes carefully up toward the door the voice seems to be echoing out of and freezes at the corner, staring into the room.
His eyes slowly trail their way across the ruined walls and filthy ground before he spins around and promptly empties his stomach onto the ground.
Itâs a damn massacre.
Remains of Reach droids and scientists alike are scattered across the metal floor in a macabre amalgamation of bluish gore and gears, bits of heads and legs suggesting that something had blown straight through their torsos too fast for them to react. The bizarre alien blood was making several of the droids spark weakly in the low light, casting odd shadows across the horrific display.
Several tables, filled with what once had likely been human bodies, now held nothing more than what could only be described as actual organs, some of them pulsating grotesquely where they were attached to some huge, otherworldly medical instruments.
And a single remaining intact humanoid body, slumped next to a table, breathing heavily and covered in a lot of blood.
Bart heaves once, twice, then clamps his mouth shut and swallows the bile down, tears pricking his eyes and body shaking.
He has a job to do, and heâs running out of time to do it.
God, he hates this. He wants to go home.
He shoves the childish thought aside and straightens back up again.
Bart enters the room quickly, forces himself to walk carefully over broken remains of alien bones and metal casings, tries not to think of what could be squishing underneath his feet, definitely does not let himself look at the lazily pulsing sacks on the tables as he approached the figure that isnât as familiar as it should be.
Wally West is even paler than he was in all of Lindaâs pictures, hair cropped much shorter and shot through with more gray than red. Worry lines have been etched into his face, scars just barely visible beneath the Reach clothing heâd apparently found trailing all the way down his throat and across the left half of his face, burns and incision marks that made him nearly unrecognizable and his left eye cloudy white rather than green. Shoulders that had once been broad were now bent inward by some invisible weight, a body that had once been lithe and agile now thin and emaciated far beyond healthy for a speedster with an accelerated metabolism.
He's slumped half over on his side, shoulders heaving with breath and one arm pressed hard to his waist, where Bart can see a deep red stain spreading lazily across the jumpsuit heâs wearing, slowly overtaking the blue blood of the Reach scientists, and Bart swallows hard.
This is a man about five minutes after an incredibly violent episode, injured and seemingly unaware of his presence to boot. Heâs only seen a small handful of people brought back from the Reachâs science division, and none of them had been anything close to this level of powerful and dangerous.
He couldnât afford to fuck this up.
Deep breath in, out. Once more, and again, the way Helena taught him.
Bart spots a sizable piece of glass on the floor and takes a heavy, deliberate step onto it.
The crunch that announced his arrival made Wally snap to attention, head coming up to glare straight at Bart from his hunched position, and Bart froze completely, hands open at his sides, trying not to let his terror show.
Itâs been a while since Wally was back home with the rest of the Outlaws, and the light in the room is flickering and near useless; will the man even recognize the modified Kid Flash uniform in the gloom?
But he apparently didnât need to worry; Wally blinks his eyes hard several times, scanning Bart from head to toe, evidently recognizing him as a nonthreat and slumping a little more to the side with a long, pained sigh.
âWassup, Kid?â Wally asks, daring a bloody little grin, and Bart is so surprised he canât answer for a second. He wasnât quite sure if the man would lucid or coherent in the state heâs in, but apparently the older speedsterâs accelerated healing is doing at least something to help his addled brain.
Bart still approached slowly, watching for any sudden movements, but he neednât have bothered. Wallyâs arm stays fixed firmly around his bleeding middle, and he doesnât move to sit up until Bart is already beside him, hissing quietly in pain as his wound moves with him.
âNice to meet you, too,â Bart says in as steady a voice as he can manage, and he means it, because as strung out and crazy as this man is right now, heâs been an inspiration to Bart since he was little and he doesnât know what else he can say to a guy who singlehandedly ripped through an entire Reach lab. âWhy werenât you in the main cellblock? Thatâs where we were supposed to meet, right?â
Wally shakes his head too fast, listing a bit awkwardly to the side again when he apparently gave up on sitting straight. âThought I could find Jai,â he slurred slowly, shakes his head again.
Bart feels something cold sink into his stomach. He doesnât dare take a glance at the human remains displayed on the table above Wallyâs head, and his hands donât start shaking again when he reaches helplessly to press against the wound in his abdomen.
âHere.â A hand, slick with red red red, rises slowly so Bart can see what itâs holding in trembling fingers. A data card, like one of the fancy ones Roy had been looking for recently, some sort of super-secret Reach project that was going to change the tide of the war or something.
Bart barely spares it a glance, too focused on trying to stem the flow of blood because hell, what else can he do, but Wally practically shoves it under his nose with an impatient sound. âYou gotta take this and go, Kid. Someoneâs⌠probably noticed the cameras by now,â Wallyâs voice is thready and breathless, but still holds as much authority as Damianâs does when giving Bart a direct order.
And thatâs stupid, what the hell?
âIâm not leaving you here, dude! Helena would kick my ass if I let her grandpa kick the bucket in a place like this!â He tries to sound as convincing as he can, but he can tell by the old manâs face itâs not working. âCome on, we can still make it to the rendezvous point if we hurry-!â
âI canâtâŚâŚ canât walk, Kid,â Wally interrupts, and Bartâs limbs feel numb when the data card is clumsily slipped into one hand. He clutches onto it reflexively and looks down at the blood coating it, ears buzzing. âYou gotta go.â
He should argue. He should tell him to hell with that, tell him Linda and Helena were waiting for him, tell him Damian had the schematics for the Reach warship hovering over Earth, tell him they finally had a chance in this war, tell him thereâs finally something to fight for again.
Thereâs a lot of things he should say, but Wallyâs eyes blink shut a little too long before the right one opens again, glazed over and unseeing, and he shakes his head one more time. âRun, kid,â Wally murmurs, before leaning back against the table holding whatâs left of his son.
Bart turns and flees, because what the hell else can he do?

What is better than a single Speed Freak Tyreek Hill Carton shirt . Kim Kardashian West outfit picture? Well, an image with her equally stylish best friend, La La Anthony. Today, Kim uploaded her look, consisting of an earthy gray clingy long skirt and a sleeveless faded purple turtleneck that revealed her toned midriff. Her footwear, meanwhile, was a salute to her husband Kanye West, coming in the form of a pair of sandy-hued Yeezy slides. And for a dash of the noughties, she sported a black arm cuff around her bicep. As for Anthony? She twinned with KKW in a white body-hugging skirt with a super cropped tank top, adding in two classic Chanel pouches for a touch of elevation.Speed Freak Tyreek Hill Carton shirt, hoodie, sweater, longsleeve and ladies t-shirt

Classic Men's To anchor her outfit, she kept her footwear casual and chose a pair of white sneakers Speed Freak Tyreek Hill Carton shirt .The two have been friends for a number of years now and have coordinated in the past: in their early days, the duo would head to Nobu in matching bandage dresses. Now, Anthony and KKW seem to have come into their own, preferring to more subtly riff off of each otherâs outfits, whether that's a navel-baring shirt or suede knee-high boots. After all, nothing says an Instagram moment like two friends in double tap get-ups.When I think of my mother in the â90s, back when her hair was still platinum and sheâd announce herself by the clinking of her silver bangles, sheâs wearing a transparent tank top with dĂŠvorĂŠ buds climbing up its clingy navy body. âItâs Voyage,â (pronounced voy-ahz) she told me. âAnd one day it will be yours.â Lo and behold, that day cameâand with it, a fully fledged obsession with the now-defunct London-based label, famous as much for its singular, free-spirited silhouettes as its story.Founded by the Mazillis, dubbed âthe Addams Family of fashion,â Voyage opened on Fulham Road in 1991 and quickly gained notoriety for its three- and four-digit priced wares and a door policy that rivaled that of Studio 54. (Lacking membership cards, Madonna and Naomi Campbell were both reportedly turned away.) Those who made it inâKate Moss, Amber Valletta, and Linda Evangelista, who once declared, âI canât survive without your clothesââthough, discovered a treasure trove of one-off velvet-trimmed camisoles, sheer slinky skirts dripping with beads, and chiffon gowns accented with rows of teeny-tiny pearls (pieces that, coincidentally, would feel right at home in Spring 2019âs perfectly imperfect handmade collections).
