Peter Gerhardsson has selected the squad for the last international match of the year. It is a practice international match against Australia, in Australia which awaits on November 12.
The national team captain has taken out 23 players but chooses to leave the big star Fridolina Rolfö at home.
- If you want to look at other players, you sometimes have to leave someone out and the choice this time fell on Fridolina. I know her as a player that I know where I am. She has been in all three international matches we have had this autumn and I have spoken to her about my decision, he says.
What did she say when you talked to her?
- There is something between her and me, but we have a good dialogue about it all, but it is my decision.
The union captain raises several names that may be relevant for Rolfö's position.
- In that particular left position, we are looking at many players. Johanna Rytting Kaneryd has played on the left at Chelsea, Olivia Schough does it, Lina Hurtig does it, says Peter Gerhardsson.
- I feel quite confident in what I have Fridolina right now. Next year, she will compete again.
Just like during the last collection, goalkeeper Jennifer Falk chooses to stay at home as she and her partner are expecting the couple's first child in a few days.
- We have had a dialogue with Jennifer and it is completely acceptable.
It is notable that Emma Holmgren, who was critical of the national team management during the last gathering , is also missing from the goalkeeper side.
- Both Leffe and I have spoken to her and explained the situation. I want players who want to join and who want to play all the time so it's a normal process in the whole thing.
The explanation for Holmgren being left out is that Peter Gerhardsson and goalkeeper coach Leif Troedsson want to see Linköping's Cajsa Andersson instead.
- Cajsa is a player we wanted to have with us during this autumn and we thought it was a good time now. Linköping has performed very well, says the union captain.
The star in the November squad is Atletico Madrid's Hanna Lundkvist.
- She is a very interesting player. She is useful in many positions. Last U23 international where I think she was very skilled and one of the absolute best in Sweden then she played central midfield. It's a player we talk about before every gathering.
Australia is one of the host nations for next summer's World Cup, but Sweden, who were drawn in Group G , will play their group stage matches in New Zealand.
The match is played in Melbourne at 14.45 local time, which means 4.45 Swedish time.

Kamp om anfallsplatsen efter draget med Hurtig: "Peter valde att spela så"
6d
Flera målfarliga anfallare i truppen.

THE NEW KIDS OF SWEDEN
In an earlier post, we got to know the veterans of the Sweden squad, but now it’s time to turn our eye to the other end of the spectrum - the newbies, the girls who have not been to any major tournaments before.
#12 JENNIFER FALK | CAPS: 0 | CLUB: Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC
It is uncommon to make the World Cup with zero appearances, but then goalkeeper is a strange position. For a few years now, Falk has been regarded as one of the future stars, but concussions have hindered her progress.
#7 MADELEN JANOGY | CAPS: 4 | CLUB: Piteå IF | GOALS: 1
After her winning season in 2018 with Piteå, Janogy was one of the players who caught the interest of many, among them head coach Peter Gerhardsson. Her first national team goal was scored right before going to France, in the dress rehearsal against South Korea, her strike making it 1-0.
#16 JULIA ZIGIOTTI OLME | CAPS: 7 | CLUB: Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC | GOALS: 0
The midfielder was first called up in September of 2018, something that reportedly came as a shock to her. The 21-year old is looking to make 2019 a memorable year, having already won the Cup with her Göteborg, she is hoping for even more successes to come.
#14 JULIA RODDAR | CAPS: 6 | CLUB: Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC | GOALS: 0
Another midfielder named Julia, Roddar made her first appearance in Blågult in October 2017, subbing in against Hungary. Roddar spent her youth studying and playing in the US, first for University of Wisconsin–Madison, and then for Florida Gulf Coast University, before graduating in 2015 and returning to Sweden.
#8 LINA HURTIG | CAPS: 18 | CLUB: Linköpings FC | GOALS: 3
To say that Lina Hurtig is under pressure to perform is an understatement. Not only does she wear the number 8, the number of the recently retired Swedish legend Lotta Schelin, she has been talked about as the next big thing for several years. However, she has been unlucky, injuries have stopped her at every turn, and despite her international debut as early as 2014, this will be Hurtig’s first major tournament.
#21 ZECIRA MUSOVIC | CAPS: 2 | CLUB: FC Rosengård
It is not easy to compete with one of the best in the world, that’s something Musovic can tell you. The goalkeeper has some experience with this, in Rosengård she for a time had to compete over playing time with the Canadian Erin Mcleod, and on the national team against Hedvig Lindahl. Despite this, Musovic is ambitous, and she enters the World Cup hoping for the chance to play.
#15 NATHALIE BJÖRN | CAPS: 9 | CLUB: FC Rosengård | GOALS: 2
A versatile player, Björn can play at both Center back and Right back, as well as Central midfield. Björn herself claims she never scores, but twice she has struck true for Blågult. She captained the Swedish U19 to gold in the 2015 Euros.
#19 ANNA ANVEGÅRD | CAPS: 9 | CLUB: Växjö DFF | GOALS: 1
After scoring 33 goals for her Växjö in the Swedish second division league Elitettan, Anvegård saw to their promotion to Damallsvenskan ahead of the 2018 season, a season in which they did historically well for a newcomer, ending in 7th place. Anvegård doubtlessly played a big part in this, as she scored 14 goals, coming second in the competition for top scorer. This also saw Anvegård being named breakthrough of the year at the 2018 Swedish Football Awards.

Women’s World Cup: Netherlands to face USA in final after Groenen extra-time winner
An extra-time strike by Jackie Groenen saw the Netherlands edge out Sweden 1-0 in a gruelling women’s World Cup semi-final in Lyon on Wednesday, taking the European champions through to this weekend’s final against the United States. After a goalless 90 minutes, midfielder Groenen — a former judo European Championship bronze medallist as a youth who recently agreed a move to Manchester United — broke the deadlock in the 99th minute of a tense contest in Lyon, breaking Swedish hearts in the process. When Danielle van de Donk’s pass was touched into her path by Swedish defender Linda Sembrant, Groenen sent a low shot from 20 yards beyond the reach of goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl and into the far corner. Having knocked out former winners Japan and then Italy in the previous two rounds, the Dutch are now just one game away from adding a first World Cup to the title they won at Euro 2017, a tournament they hosted. Getting this far is a remarkable achievement for the ‘Oranje’, who are appearing at just their second World Cup, but they will surely need to improve drastically if they are to stand any chance of defeating the holders. The USA are through to their third successive World Cup final after edging out England 2-1 on Tuesday. That was a game which had it all, and it was always going to be difficult for this second semi-final to reach the same heights. After the euphoria of ending a long hoodoo against old rivals Germany in the last round, 2016 Olympic finalists Sweden were the better team in the first half here. Their coach Peter Gerhardsson was forced into a late change to his starting line-up, with midfielder Elin Rubensson initially dropped and then retained in the team after all as Nathalie Bjorn missed out with illness.
– Goalkeeping heroics –
When Rubensson had a shot blocked in the area in the 37th minute, the ball fell to Lina Hurtig and her effort was well saved by Sari van Veenendaal. That was about it for goalmouth action in the first half, and the Dutch goalkeeper and captain denied them again in the 56th minute as she got down low to tip Nilla Fischer’s shot onto the post. On this evidence, it is remarkable that Van Veenendaal was released by Arsenal prior to the tournament. Then again, that was not the best save in the second half, with Sweden’s Lindahl displaying stunning athleticism to tip a Vivianne Miedema header onto the bar soon after. Extra time approached with increasing inevitability, although substitute Shanice van de Sanden — a favourite with the locals as she plays for Lyon — might have won it in stoppage time had her powerful strike not been tipped over by Lindahl. The Dutch had seen Lieke Martens go off at half-time having been an injury doubt ahead of the game. They had lacked attacking inspiration for long spells but they finally got the breakthrough in the first period of extra time thanks to Groenen. It was a fine goal by the 24-year-old, but it was agonising for Sweden, and the 2003 World Cup runners-up could not find an equaliser. Instead they will face England in the third-place play-off in Nice on Saturday. Read the full article

Netherlands beat Sweden to reach FIFA Women’s World Cup final
After a goalless 90 minutes, midfielder Groenen — a former judo European Championship bronze medallist as a youth who recently agreed a move to Manchester United — broke the deadlock in the 99th minute of a tense contest, breaking Swedish hearts in the process. When Danielle van de Donk’s pass was touched into her path, Groenen sent a low shot from 20 yards beyond the reach of goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl and into the far corner. Having knocked out Italy and former winners Japan in the previous two rounds, the Dutch are now just one game away from adding a first World Cup to the title they won at Euro 2017 as hosts. “We never knew this would be possible. It’s one more match and we might possibly be world champions,” said a beaming Groenen. Getting this far is a remarkable achievement for the “Oranje”, appearing at just their second World Cup, but they will need to improve drastically if they are to stand any chance of defeating the holders. The Netherlands have long been a force in the men’s game, but they had never even been to a major women’s tournament until a decade ago. “I think the potential has been in the Netherlands for a longer period of time but the facilities were not there,” said Dutch coach Sarina Wiegman, pointing to the start of the Dutch league in 2007 as the catalyst. “It’s the whole development in the Netherlands and also the individuals that made bigger steps. Now they have been in a couple of tournaments so they are very experienced now too and they believe they can perform really well.” The USA made it through to their third successive World Cup final after beating England 2-1 on Tuesday. That was a game which had it all, and it was always going to be difficult for this second semi-final to reach the same heights. After ending a long hoodoo against old rivals Germany in the last round, 2016 Olympic finalists Sweden were the better team in the first half here. Goalkeeping heroics A Sari van Veenendaal save from Lina Hurtig in the 37th minute was the only chance of note in the first half, but the Dutch goalkeeper and captain denied Sweden again in the 56th minute as she tipped Nilla Fischer’s low shot onto the post. On this evidence, it is remarkable that Van Veenendaal was released by Arsenal prior to the tournament. That was not the best save in the second half, though, with Sweden’s Lindahl displaying stunning athleticism to tip a Vivianne Miedema header onto the bar. The Dutch had seen Lieke Martens go off at half-time having been an injury doubt ahead of the game. She is a concern for the final, which her side reached thanks to Groenen finally getting the breakthrough in the first period of extra time. It was a fine goal by the 24-year-old, but it was agonising for Sweden, and the 2003 World Cup runners-up also saw midfielder Kosovare Asllani go off on a stretcher at the end after being hit in the face by the ball. They will face England in the third-place play-off in Nice on Saturday. “Now it’s about the medal,” said coach Peter Gerhardsson. “Ending up third of course feels a lot better than ending up fourth. We’ll do everything in our power to try to do that.” Read the full article

Women’s World Cup 2019: Sweden defeat Thailand 5-1 to reach the last 16
Sweden booked their passage to the Women’s World Cup knockout stages by thrashing a vastly-improved Thailand 5-1.
Having suffered a record 13-0 loss in their opening Group F game against the United States, Thailand were far more competitive and were cheered on by a boisterous section of the 9,354 crowd, the lowest of the tournament so far.
But they could not live with Sweden’s superior technique, fitness and height as a team ranked 25 places above them opened the scoring after six minutes via Linda Sembrant’s close-range header.
Kosovare Asllani tucked in after neat footwork for the 2016 Olympic Games finalists before Fridolina Rolfo’s rocket from the edge of the box made it 3-0 at the break.
After Thailand battled courageously in the second half, there was a further goal for the Swedes when Lina Hurtig headed in.
But Thailand got their deserved reward when captain Kanjana Sung-Ngoen scored their first goal of the tournament after breaking clear to fire in and send their small section of fans wild.
There was still time for Sweden to reply after Elin Rubensson smashed home a penalty, which was awarded by the video assistant referee following Natthakarn Chinwong’s handball.
‘The goal meant so much’ – a moment of redemption for Thailand after 13-0 thrashing
What to look out for on day 11 of the Women’s World Cup

Although there were a few errors for the goals, Thai goalkeeper Waraporn Boonsing, one of four changes after the humiliation against the US, made several smart saves. One from substitute Madelen Janogy’s fiercely-struck shot left Boonsing with a bloody nose.
It was symptomatic of a resilient and energetic display from the Thai side, largely drawn from their homeland and which did not have a domestic league for the whole of 2018.
Appearing at their second World Cup, they could still achieve their aim of reaching the second round should they beat Chile in their final group game on Thursday and potentially claim a spot for one of the best third-placed teams.

Touchline tears as Thailand score first World Cup goal
‘It meant so much’ – what they said
Thailand coach Nuengrutai Srathongvian:“This goal meant a lot to us. It’s a difficult goal and playing a great team like Sweden, it meant so much.
“It meant that all of our preparation paid off. This one goal made us laugh, made us smile and makes us happy.
“Our defeat in the last game was massive. Yes, we were disappointed. But even if we score one today, we made some success. Chile will be difficult next but getting a point at this World Cup is what we want to do.”
Sweden coach Peter Gerhardsson:“I’ve never won a match before playing it and I never will. You prepare for a number of potential scenarios and then you have to play it. Sometimes you have to wait to get a result like Chile, but today was a little easier, we got a set-piece goal.
“The USA match will be different, but it will be an important match for us naturally.”
Earliest and latest goals – the stats
Sweden have progressed beyond the group stages in seven of their eight appearances at the Women’s World Cup.
No team has conceded more goals in a single Women’s World Cup tournament than Thailand’s tally of 18 so far this year. Argentina conceded the same amount in 2007.
This was only the second time Sweden have scored five or more goals in a Women’s World Cup match.
Thailand have faced 75 shots, and 32 on target, in their two World Cup games this year. They have had seven in response.
Linda Sembrant’s opener for Sweden was the earliest goal scored at this year’s Women’s World Cup so far, at five minutes 24 seconds.
Elin Rubensson’s penalty was the latest scored at the tournament so far, at 95 minutes 10 seconds.
What’s next?
In the final round of Group F fixtures, Sweden face the USA – in what could be top-spot decider – while Thailand take on Chile.
Both matches take place at 20:00 BST on Thursday, 20 June.
