With millions of blog articles published daily, getting through the clutter demands exceptional material. Shortened attention spans have also led users to fast, snappy formats such as TikTok and Instagram, making traditional long-form writing appear outdated for some (Essam 2024). Furthermore, the rise of visually engaging content—such as videos, infographics, and podcasts—provides more immersive experiences, and challenging text-heavy blogs (Essam 2024). However, with innovation and quality, blogs may still shine! Even with the popularity of short-form videos, blogging is still very much in use today (Schaefer 2023). With 70 million new articles written on WordPress each month and over 600 million blogs comprising one-third of the internet, it is evident that there is a need for text-based content (Schaefer 2023). Written newsletters are on the rise thanks to sites like Medium, Substack, and LinkedIn, and reading is still a popular learning method for many people. Gen Z is spearheading this trend: 35% say they read more now than they did two years ago, and 55% read once a week, primarily on their phones (Schaefer 2023). If reading remains a primary means of content engagement, blogging will continue to flourish.
Blogging has evolved significantly from its inception in 1994 when Justin Hall launched links.net to share his work (Pandey 2024). In 1997, John Barger developed the term "weblog" to describe a diary of interesting sites on the internet, which was quickly shortened to "blog." During the late 1990s and early 2000s, blogging became a popular creative outlet, particularly among teenagers and young adults who utilized platforms such as WordPress to share personal thoughts, poetry, and feelings (Pandey 2024). Here are some examples I have found.  Henry Jenkins and Pop Junctions have grown from Confessions of an Aca-Fan to a thriving forum with varied voices from academia, media, and activism (Sowa et al. 2024). Its editorial board includes experts such as Benjamin Burroughs, who investigates streaming technologies; Christopher Cayari, who investigates music and social media; Samantha Close, who focuses on fan studies and labor in creative industries; and many others, including scholars of pop culture, technology, and fandom from institutions such as the University of Amsterdam, USC, and Michigan. They contribute to a lively discussion about popular culture, media literacy, activism, and other topics. Secondly, the proliferation of internet portrayals of motherhood has influenced the cultural references and archetypes used to create and consume contemporary parenthood (Orton-Johnson 2017). Mummy blogs, a type of life writing, have developed in the blogosphere as a significant cultural phenomenon, providing a prism through which we can reflect on current conceptions of motherhood (Orton-Johnson 2017). Blogs have created forums for people to represent, negotiate, and oppose their mothering experiences. By challenging and reinterpreting traditional portrayals of motherhood, giving voice to the private world of motherhood, and focusing on the maternal voice, mommy blogs allow for more nuanced articulations of maternal identities (Orton-Johnson 2017). As a result, mummy blogs have been positioned as tools of empowerment with the ability to democratize mainstream media discourse. There are even blogs that are dedicated to fandoms of anime, manga, and webtoons, I am sure there are many more examples you readers can come up with.
In the age of TikTok and Instagram, blogging is relevant because it provides a thorough exploration of complicated topics that short-form content cannot. While short, visually appealing formats remain popular, blogs continue to thrive as outlets for niche interests, in-depth analysis, and personal expression. From scholarly conversations to personal tales such as mummy blogs, the written word enables deeper involvement and community development. With millions of new pieces written each month and emerging platforms such as Medium and Substack, blogging remains a valuable part of the digital ecosystem, coexisting with modern, fast-paced content trends.
